Monitoring the driver's physical and mental state based on wearable EEG acquisition equipment, especially the detection and early warning of fatigue, is a key issue in the research of the brain–computer interface in human–machine intelligent fusion driving. Comparing and analyzing the waking (alert) state and fatigue state by simulating EEG data during simulated driving, this paper proposes a brain functional network construction method based on a phase locking value (PLV) and phase lag index (PLI), studies the relationship between brain regions, and quantitatively analyzes the network structure. The characteristic parameters of the brain functional network that have significant differences in fatigue status are screened out and constitute feature vectors, which are then combined with machine learning algorithms to complete classification and identification. The experimental results show that this method can effectively distinguish between alertness and fatigue states. The recognition accuracy rates of 52 subjects are all above 70%, with the highest recognition accuracy reaching 89.5%. Brain network topology analysis showed that the connectivity between brain regions was weakened under a fatigue state, especially under the PLV method, and the phase synchronization relationship between delta and theta frequency bands was significantly weakened. The research results provide a reference for understanding the interdependence of brain regions under fatigue conditions and the development of fatigue driving detection systems. Large-scale functional networks are spatially distributed in the human brain. Despite recent progress in differentiating their functional roles, how the brain navigates the spatial coordination among them and the biological relevance of this coordination is still not fully understood. Capitalizing on canonical individualized networks derived from functional MRI data, we proposed a new concept, that is, co-representation of functional brain networks, to delineate the spatial coordination among them. To further quantify the co-representation pattern, we defined two indexes, that is, the co-representation specificity (CoRS) and intensity (CoRI), for separately measuring the extent of specific and average expression of functional networks at each brain location by using the data from both sexes. We found that the identified pattern of co-representation was anchored by cortical regions with three types of cytoarchitectural classes along a sensory–fugal axis, including, at the first end, primary (idiotypic) regions showing high CoRS, at the second end, heteromodal regions showing low CoRS and high CoRI, at the third end, paralimbic regions showing low CoRI. Importantly, we demonstrated the critical role of myeloarchitecture in sculpting the spatial distribution of co-representation by assessing the association with the myelin-related neuroanatomical and transcriptomic profiles. Furthermore, the significance of manifesting the co-representation was revealed in its prediction of individual behavioral ability. Our findings indicated that the spatial coordination among functional networks was built upon an anatomically configured blueprint to facilitate neural information processing, while advancing our understanding of the topographical organization of the brain by emphasizing the assembly of functional networks. Previous neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormal brain networks in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in emotional processing. While any cognitive task consists of a series of stages, little is yet known about the topology of functional brain networks in MDD for these stages during emotional face recognition. To address this problem, electroencephalography (EEG)- based functional brain networks of MDD patients at different stages of facial information processing were investigated in this study. First, EEG signals were collected from 16 patients with MDD and 18 age-, gender-, and educationmatched normal subjects when performing an emotional face recognition task. Second, the global field power (GFP) method was employed to divide group-averaged event-related potentials into different stages. Third, using the phase transfer entropy (PTE) approach, the brain networks of MDD patients and normal individuals were constructed for each stage in negative and positive face processing, respectively. Finally, we compared the topological properties of brain networks of each stage between the two groups using graph theory approaches. The results showed that the analyzed three stages of emotional face processing corresponded to specific neurophysiological phases, namely, visual perception, face recognition, and emotional decision-making. It was also demonstrated that depressed patients showed abnormally decreased characteristic path length at the visual perception stage of negative face recognition and normalized characteristic path length in the stage of emotional decision-making during positive face processing compared to healthy subjects. Furthermore, while both the MDD and normal groups' brain networks were found to exhibit small-world network characteristics, the brain network of patients with depression tended to be randomized. Moreover, for patients with MDD, the centro-parietal region may lose its status as a hub in the process of facial expression identification. Together, our findings suggested that altered emotional function in MDD patients might be associated with disruptions in the topological organization of functional brain networks during emotional face recognition, which further deepened our understanding of the emotion processing dysfunction underlying MDD. The functional architecture undergoes alterations during the preclinical phase of Alzheimer’s disease. Consequently, the primary research focus has shifted towards identifying Alzheimer’s disease and its early stages by constructing a functional connectivity network based on resting-state fMRI data. Recent investigations show that as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) progresses, modular tissue and connections in the core brain areas of AD patients diminish. Sparse learning methods are powerful tools for understanding Functional Brain Networks (FBNs) with Regions of Interest (ROIs) and a connectivity matrix measuring functional coherence between them. However, these tools often focus exclusively on functional connectivity measures, neglecting the brain network’s modularity. Modularity orchestrates dynamic activities within the FBN to execute intricate cognitive tasks. To provide a comprehensive delineation of the FBN, we propose a local similarity-constrained low-rank sparse representation (LSLRSR) method that encodes modularity information under a manifold-regularized network learning framework and further formulate it as a low-rank sparse graph learning problem, which can be solved by an efficient optimization algorithm. Specifically, for each modularity structure, the Schatten p-norm regularizer reduces the reconstruction error and provides a better approximation of the low-rank constraint. Furthermore, we adopt a manifold-regularized local similarity prior to infer the intricate relationship between subnetwork similarity and modularity, guiding the modeling of FBN. Additionally, the proximal average method approximates the joint solution’s proximal map, and the resulting nonconvex optimization problems are solved using the alternating direction multiplier method (ADMM). Compared to state-of-the-art methods for constructing FBNs, our algorithm generates a more modular FBN. This lays the groundwork for further research into alterations in brain network modularity resulting from diseases.

Maintaining standing balance is essential for people to engage in productive activities in daily life. However, the process of interaction between the cortex and the muscles during balance regulation is understudied. Four balance paradigms of different difficulty were designed by closing eyes and laying sponge pad under feet. Ten healthy subjects were recruited to stand for ten 15 s trials in each paradigm. This study used simultaneously acquired electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) to investigate changes in the human cortico-muscular coupling relationship and functional brain network characteristics during balance control. The coherence and causality of EEG and EMG signals were calculated by magnitude-squared coherence (MSC) and transfer entropy (TE). It was found that changes in balance strategies may lead to a shift in cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) from the beta band to the gamma band when the difficulty of balance increased. As subjects performed the four standing balance paradigms, the causality of the beta band and the gamma band was stronger in the descending neural pathway than that in the ascending neural pathway. A multi-rhythmic functional brain network with 19 EEG channels was constructed and analyzed based on graph theory, showing that its topology also changed with changes in balance difficulty. These results show an active adjustment of the sensorimotor system under different balance paradigms and provide new insights into the endogenous physiological mechanisms underlying the control of standing balance. The aim of this study was to investigate the inner link between the small-world brain network and inhibitory control. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to construct a neurofeedback (NF) training system and regulate the frontal small-world brain network. The small-world network downregulation group (DOWN, n = 17) and the small-world network upregulation group (UP, n = 17) received five days of fNIRS-NF training and performed the color–word Stroop task before and after training. The behavioral and functional brain network topology results of both groups were analyzed by a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), which showed that the upregulation training helped to improve inhibitory control. The upregulated small-world brain network exhibits an increase in the brain network regularization, links widely dispersed brain resources, and reduces the lateralization of brain functional networks between hemispheres. This suggests an inherent correlation between small-world functional brain networks and inhibitory control; moreover, dynamic optimization under cost efficiency trade-offs provides a neural basis for inhibitory control. Background: Endovascular thrombectomy has been confirmed to be an effective therapy for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, how functional brain networks reorganize after restoration of blood supply in AIS patients, and whether the degree of reperfusion associates with functional network changes remains unclear. Methods: Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 43 AIS patients with anterior circulation occlusion after thrombectomy and 37 healthy controls (HCs). Both static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) within four advanced functional networks including dorsal attention network (DAN), ventral attention network (VAN), executive control network (ECN) and default mode network (DMN), were calculated and compared between post-thrombectomy patients and HCs, and between two subgroups of post-thrombectomy patients with different reperfusion conditions. Results: As compared to HCs, patients showed significant differences in static FC of four functional networks, and in dynamic FC of DAN, ECN and DMN. Furthermore, patients with better reperfusion conditions exhibited increased static FC with precuneus, and altered dynamic FC within precuneus. Moreover, these alterations were associated with clinical assessments of stroke severity and functional recovery in post-thrombectomy patients. Conclusions: Collectively, these findings may provide the potential imaging markers for assessment of thrombectomy efficacy and help establish the specific rehabilitation treatments for post-thrombectomy patients.

Background: Social anxiety (SA) is a negative emotional response that can lead to mental health issues, which some have experienced during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Little attention has been given to the neurobiological mechanisms underlying inter-individual differences in SA alterations related to COVID-19. This study aims to identify neurofunctional markers of COVID-specific SA development. Methods: 110 healthy participants underwent resting-state magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral tests before the pandemic (T1, October 2019 to January 2020) and completed follow-up behavioral measurements during the pandemic (T2, February to May 2020). We constructed individual functional networks and used graph theoretical analysis to estimate their global and nodal topological properties, then used Pearson correlation and partial least squares correlations examine their associations with COVID-specific SA alterations. Results: In terms of global network parameters, SA alterations (T2-T1) were negatively related to pre-pandemic brain small-worldness and normalized clustering coefficient. In terms of nodal network parameters, SA alterations were positively linked to a pronounced degree centrality pattern, encompassing both the high-level cognitive networks (dorsal attention network, cingulo-opercular task control network, default mode network, memory retrieval network, fronto-parietal task control network, and subcortical network) and low-level perceptual networks (sensory/somatomotor network, auditory network, and visual network). These findings were robust after controlling for pre-pandemic general anxiety, other stressful life events, and family socioeconomic status, as well as by treating SA alterations as categorical variables. Conclusions: The individual functional network associated with SA alterations showed a disrupted topological organization with a more random state, which may shed light on the neurobiological basis of COVID-related SA changes at the network level.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) experience changes in both the structure and function of their brain networks. In the past, cognitive impairment was often classified based on connectivity features, which only reflected the characteristics of the binary brain network or weighted brain network. It exhibited limited interpretability and stability. This study aims to quantitatively characterize the topological properties of brain functional networks (BFNs) using multi-threshold derivative (MTD), and to establish a new classification framework for end-stage renal disease with mild cognitive impairment (ESRDaMCI). The dynamic BFNs (DBFNs) were constructed and binarized with multiple thresholds, and then their topological properties were extracted from each binary brain network. These properties were then quantified by calculating their derivative curves and expressing them as multi-threshold derivative (MTD) features. The classification results of MTD features were compared with several commonly used DBFN features, and the effectiveness of MTD features in the classification of ESRDaMCI was evaluated based on the classification performance test. The results indicated that the linear fusion of MTD features improved classification performance and outperformed individual MTD features. Its accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 85.98 ± 2.92%, 86.10 ± 4.11%, and 81.54 ± 4.27%, respectively. Finally, the feature weights of MTD were analyzed, and MTD-cc had the highest weight percentage of 28.32% in the fused features. The MTD features effectively supplemented traditional feature quantification by addressing the issue of indistinct classification differentiation. In the food field, the sensory evaluation of food texture, aroma, and flavor still relies on artificial sensory evaluation and machine perception, but the results of artificial sensory evaluation by professionals are not universal, and machines cannot obtain psychological information. In this work, an electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis method based on the functional brain network was proposed, which effectively realized odor recognition and pleasantness recognition. Firstly, a self-developed odor generator was used to induce olfactory EEG, and the signals were collected and preprocessed. Secondly, the functional brain networks were constructed by mutual information (MI). Finally, the network properties were extracted and input to the support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Compared with the traditional EEG feature extraction methods, the degree of the functional brain network can effectively extract EEG features, the average accuracy and F1 score of odor recognition were 95.78% and 95.24%, respectively, and in the pleasantness recognition were 98.21% and 98.21%, respectively. Abstract Background Neural stem cells (NSCs) are believed to have the most therapeutic potential for neurological disorders because they can differentiate into various neurons and glial cells. This research evaluated the safety and efficacy of intranasal administration of NSCs in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The functional brain network (FBN) analysis based on electroencephalogram (EEG) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis based on T1-weighted images were performed to evaluate functional and structural changes in the brain. Methods A total of 25 CP patients aged 3–12 years were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n = 15), which received an intranasal infusion of NSCs loaded with nasal patches and rehabilitation therapy, or the control group (n = 10) received rehabilitation therapy only. The primary endpoints were the safety (assessed by the incidence of adverse events (AEs), laboratory and imaging examinations) and the changes in the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88), the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), and some adapted scales. The secondary endpoints were the FBN and VBM analysis. Results There were only four AEs happened during the 24-month follow-up period. There was no significant difference in the laboratory examinations before and after treatment, and the magnetic resonance imaging showed no abnormal nasal and intracranial masses. Compared to the control group, patients in the treatment group showed apparent improvements in GMFM-88 and ADL 24 months after treatment. Compared with the baseline, the scale scores of the Fine Motor Function, Sociability, Life Adaptability, Expressive Ability, GMFM-88, and ADL increased significantly in the treatment group 24 months after treatment, while the SDSC score decreased considerably. Compared with baseline, the FBN analysis showed a substantial decrease in brain network energy, and the VBM analysis showed a significant increase in gray matter volume in the treatment group after NSCs treatment. Conclusions Our results showed that intranasal administration of NSCs was well-tolerated and potentially beneficial in children with CP. Background: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a common neurosensory manifestation in long COVID. An effective and safe treatment against COVID-19-related OD is needed. Methods: This pilot trial recruited long COVID patients with persistent OD. Participants were randomly assigned to receive short-course (14 days) oral vitamin A (VitA; 25,000 IU per day) and aerosolised diffuser olfactory training (OT) thrice daily (combination), OT alone (standard care), or observation (control) for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was differences in olfactory function by butanol threshold tests (BTT) between baseline and end-of-treatment. Secondary outcomes included smell identification tests (SIT), structural MRI brain, and serial seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analyses in the olfactory cortical network by resting-state functional MRI (rs–fMRI). Results: A total of 24 participants were randomly assigned to receive either combination treatment (n = 10), standard care (n = 9), or control (n = 5). Median OD duration was 157 days (IQR 127–175). Mean baseline BTT score was 2.3 (SD 1.1). At end-of-treatment, mean BTT scores were significantly higher for the combination group than control (p < 0.001, MD = 4.4, 95% CI 1.7 to 7.2) and standard care (p = 0.009) groups. Interval SIT scores increased significantly (p = 0.009) in the combination group. rs–fMRI showed significantly higher FC in the combination group when compared to other groups. At end-of-treatment, positive correlations were found in the increased FC at left inferior frontal gyrus and clinically significant improvements in measured BTT (r = 0.858, p < 0.001) and SIT (r = 0.548, p = 0.042) scores for the combination group. Introduction: Measuring whole-brain networks of the 40 Hz auditory steady state response (ASSR) is a promising approach to describe the after-effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of tDCS on the brain network of 40 Hz ASSR in healthy adult males using graph theory. The second objective was to identify a population in which tDCS effectively modulates the brain network of 40 Hz ASSR. Methods: This study used a randomized, sham-controlled, double-blinded crossover approach. Twenty-five adult males (20-24 years old) completed two sessions at least 1 month apart. The participants underwent cathodal or sham tDCS of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, after which 40 Hz ASSR was measured using magnetoencephalography. After the signal sources were mapped onto the Desikan-Killiany brain atlas, the statistical relationships between localized activities were evaluated in terms of the debiased weighted phase lag index (dbWPLI). Weighted and undirected graphs were constructed for the tDCS and sham conditions based on the dbWPLI. Weighted characteristic path lengths and clustering coefficients were then measured and compared between the tDCS and sham conditions using mixed linear models.* Results: The characteristic path length was significantly lower post-tDCS simulation (p = 0.04) than after sham stimulation. This indicates that after tDCS simulation, the whole-brain networks of 40 Hz ASSR show a significant functional integration. Simple linear regression showed a higher characteristic path length at baseline, which was associated with a larger reduction in characteristic path length after tDCS. Hence, a pronounced effect of tDCS is expected for those who have a less functionally integrated network of 40 Hz ASSR. Discussion: Given that the healthy brain is functionally integrated, we conclude that tDCS could effectively normalize less functionally integrated brain networks rather than enhance functional integration. Introduction: Due to the lack of devices and the dfficulty of gathering patients, the small sample size is one of the most challenging problems in functional brain network (FBN) analysis. Previous studies have attempted to solve this problemof sample limitation through data augmentationmethods, such as sample transformation and noise addition. However, these methods ignore the unique spatial-temporal information of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, which is essential for FBN analysis. Methods: To address this issue, we propose a spatial-temporal data- augmentation-based classification (STDAC) scheme that can fuse the spatial- temporal information, increase the samples, while improving the classification performance. Firstly, we propose a spatial augmentation module utilizing the spatial prior knowledge, which was ignored by previous augmentation methods. Secondly, we design a temporal augmentation module by random discontinuous sampling period, which can generate more samples than former approaches. Finally, a tensor fusion method is used to combine the features from the above two modules, which can make efficient use of spatial-temporal information of fMRI simultaneously. Abstract Background Depression is a common symptom of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but the underlying neural mechanism is unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the topological properties of AD patients with depressive symptoms (D-AD) using graph theoretical analysis. Methods We obtained 3-Tesla rsfMRI data from 24 D-AD patients, 20 non-depressed AD patients (nD-AD), and 20 normal controls (NC). Resting state networks were identified using graph theory analysis. ANOVA with a two-sample t-test post hoc analysis in GRETNA was used to assess the topological measurements. Results Our results demonstrate that the three groups show characteristic properties of a small-world network. NCs showed significantly larger global and local efficiency than D-AD and nD-AD patients. Compared with nD-AD patients, D-AD patients showed decreased nodal centrality in the pallidum, putamen, and right superior temporal gyrus. They also showed increased nodal centrality in the right superior parietal gyrus, the medial orbital portion of the right superior frontal gyrus, and the orbital portion of the right superior frontal gyrus. Compared with nD-AD patients, NC showed decreased nodal betweenness in the right superior temporal gyrus, and increased nodal betweenness in medial orbital part of the right superior frontal gyrus. Conclusions These results indicate that D-AD is associated with alterations of topological structure. Our study provides new insights into the brain mechanisms underlying D-AD.

To investigate the differences in functional brain network structures between patients with a high level of generalized anxiety disorder (HGAD) and those with a low level of generalized anxiety disorder (LGAD), a resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded in 30 LGAD patients and 21 HGAD patients. Functional connectivity between all pairs of brain regions was determined by the Phase Lag Index (PLI) to construct a functional brain network. Then, the characteristic path length, clustering coefficient, and small world were calculated to estimate functional brain network structures. The results showed that the PLI values of HGAD were significantly increased in alpha2, and significantly decreased in the theta and alpha1 rhythms, and the small-world attributes for both HGAD patients and LGAD patients were less than one for all the rhythms. Moreover, the small-world values of HGAD were significantly lower than those of LGAD in the theta and alpha2 rhythms, which indicated that the brain functional network structure would deteriorate with the increase in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) severity. Our findings may play a role in the development and understanding of LGAD and HGAD to determine whether interventions that target these brain changes may be effective in treating GAD. Objectives: To preliminarily explore the functional activity and information integration of the brains under resting state based on graph theory in patients with first-episode, late-life depression (LLD) before and after antidepressant treatment. Methods: A total of 50 patients with first-episode LLD and 40 non-depressed controls (NCs) were recruited for the present research. Participants underwent the RBANS test, the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD-17) test, and resting-state functional MRI scans (rs-fMRI). The RBANS test consists of 12 sub-tests that contribute to a total score and index scores across the five domains: immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention, and delayed memory. Escitalopram or sertraline was adopted for treating depression, and the dosage of the drug was adjusted by the experienced psychiatrists. Of the 50 LLD patients, 27 cases who completed 6-month follow-ups and 27 NCs matched with age, sex, and education level were included for the final statistical analysis. Results: There were significant di􀀀erences in RBANS total score, immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention, and delayed memory between LLD baseline group and NCs group (P < 0.05). Considering the global attribute indicators, the clustering coeffcient of global indicators was lower in the LLD baseline group than in the NCs group, and the small-world attribute of functional brain networks existed in all three groups. The degree centrality and node effciency of some brains were lower in the LLD baseline group than in the NCs group. After 6 months of antidepressant therapy, the scores of HAMD-17, immediate memory, language, and delayed memory in the LLD follow-up group were higher than those in the LLD baseline group. Compared with the LLD baseline group, the degree centrality and node effciency of some brains in the cognitive control network were decreased in the LLD follow-up group. Conclusions: The ability to integrate and divide labor of functional brain networks declines in LLD patients and linked with the depression severity. After the relief of depressive symptoms, the small-world attribute of functional brain networks in LLD patients persists. The study of mental workload has attracted much interest in neuroergonomics, a frontier field of research. However, there appears no consensus on how to measure mental workload effectively because the mental workload is not only regulated by task difficulty but also affected by individual skill level reflected as mental schema. In this study, we investigated the alterations in the functional brain network induced by a 10-day simulated piloting task with different difficulty levels. Topological features quantifying global and local information communication and network organization were analyzed. It was found that during different tests, the global efficiency did not change, but the gravity center of the local efficiency of the network moved from the frontal to the posterior area; the small-worldness of the functional brain network became stronger. These results demonstrate the reconfiguration of the brain network during the development of mental schema. Furthermore, for the first two tests, the global and local efficiency did not have a consistent change trend under different difficulty levels, but after forming the developed mental schema, both of them decreased with the increase in task difficulty, showing sensitivity to the increase in mental workload. Our results demonstrate brain network reconfiguration during the motor learning process and reveal the importance of the developed mental schema for the accurate assessment of mental workload. Methods: A total of 25 CP patients aged 3–12 years were randomly assigned to the treatment group (n = 15), which received an intranasal infusion of NSCs loaded with nasal patches and rehabilitation therapy, or the control group (n = 10) received rehabilitation therapy only. The primary endpoints were the safety (assessed by the incidence of adverse events (AEs), laboratory and imaging examinations) and the changes in the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 (GMFM-88), the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) scale, the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), and some adapted scales. The secondary endpoints were the FBN and VBM analysis. Results: There were only four AEs happened during the 24-month follow-up period. There was no significant difference in the laboratory examinations before and after treatment, and the magnetic resonance imaging showed no abnormal nasal and intracranial masses. Compared to the control group, patients in the treatment group showed apparent improvements in GMFM-88 and ADL 24 months after treatment. Compared with the baseline, the scale scores of the Fine Motor Function, Sociability, Life Adaptability, Expressive Ability, GMFM-88, and ADL increased significantly in the treatment group 24 months after treatment, while the SDSC score decreased considerably. Compared with baseline, the FBN analysis showed a substantial decrease in brain network energy, and the VBM analysis showed a significant increase in gray matter volume in the treatment group after NSCs treatment. Conclusions: Our results showed that intranasal administration of NSCs was well-tolerated and potentially beneficial in children with CP. Background: Functional brain networks (FBNs) derived from resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) have shown great potential in identifying brain disorders, such as autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Therefore, many FBN estimation methods have been proposed in recent years. Most existing methods only model the functional connections between brain regions of interest (ROIs) from a single view (e.g., by estimating FBNs through a specific strategy), failing to capture the complex interactions among ROIs in the brain. Methods: To address this problem, we propose fusion of multiview FBNs through joint embedding, which can make full use of the common information of multiview FBNs estimated by different strategies. More specifically, we first stack the adjacency matrices of FBNs estimated by different methods into a tensor and use tensor factorization to learn the joint embedding (i.e., a common factor of all FBNs) for each ROI. Then, we use Pearson's correlation to calculate the connections between each embedded ROI in order to reconstruct a new FBN. Results: Experimental results obtained on the public ABIDE dataset with rs-fMRI data reveal that our method is superior to several state-of-the-art methods in automated ASD diagnosis. Moreover, by exploring FBN "features" that contributed most to ASD identification, we discovered potential biomarkers for ASD diagnosis. The proposed framework achieves an accuracy of 74.46 % , which is generally better than the compared individual FBN methods. In addition, our method achieves the best performance compared to other multinetwork methods, i.e., an accuracy improvement of at least 2.72 % . Conclusions: We present a multiview FBN fusion strategy through joint embedding for fMRI-based ASD identification. Delirium is a frequent complication after surgery in older adults and is associated with an increased risk of long-term cognitive impairment and dementia. Disturbances in functional brain networks were previously reported during delirium. We hypothesised that alterations in functional brain networks persist after remission of postoperative delirium and that functional brain network alterations are associated with long-term cognitive impairment. In this prospective, multicentre, observational cohort study, we included older patients who underwent clinical assessments (including the Trail Making Test B [TMT-B]) and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) before and 3 months after elective surgery. Delirium was assessed on the first seven postoperative days. Of the 554 enrolled patients, 246 remained after strict motion correction, of whom 38 (16%) developed postoperative delirium. The rs-fMRI functional connectivity strength increased 3 months after surgery in the total study population (β=0.006; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.001–0.011; P =0.013), but it decreased after postoperative delirium (β=–0.015; 95% CI: –0.028 to 0.002; P =0.023). No difference in TMT-B scores was found at follow-up between patients with and without postoperative delirium. Patients with decreased functional connectivity strength declined in TMT-B scores compared with those who did not (β=11.04; 95% CI: 0.85–21.2; P =0.034). Postoperative delirium was associated with decreased brain functional connectivity strength after 3 months, suggesting that delirium has a long-lasting impact on brain networks. Recent advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have helped elucidate previously inaccessible trajectories of early-life prenatal and neonatal brain development. To date, the interpretation of fetal–neonatal fMRI data has relied on linear analytic models, akin to adult neuroimaging data. However, unlike the adult brain, the fetal and newborn brain develops extraordinarily rapidly, far outpacing any other brain development period across the life span. Consequently, conventional linear computational models may not adequately capture these accelerated and complex neurodevelopmental trajectories during this critical period of brain development along the prenatal-neonatal continuum. To obtain a nuanced understanding of fetal–neonatal brain development, including nonlinear growth, for the first time, we developed quantitative, systems-wide representations of brain activity in a large sample (>500) of fetuses, preterm, and full-term neonates using an unsupervised deep generative model called variational autoencoder (VAE), a model previously shown to be superior to linear models in representing complex resting-state data in healthy adults. Here, we demonstrated that nonlinear brain features, that is, latent variables, derived with the VAE pretrained on rsfMRI of human adults, carried important individual neural signatures, leading to improved representation of prenatal-neonatal brain maturational patterns and more accurate and stable age prediction in the neonate cohort compared to linear models. Using the VAE decoder, we also revealed distinct functional brain networks spanning the sensory and default mode networks. Using the VAE, we are able to reliably capture and quantify complex, nonlinear fetal–neonatal functional neural connectivity. This will lay the critical foundation for detailed mapping of healthy and aberrant functional brain signatures that have their origins in fetal life.

Maintaining standing balance is essential for people to engage in productive activities in daily life. However, the process of interaction between the cortex and the muscles during balance regulation is understudied. Four balance paradigms of different difficulty were designed by closing eyes and laying sponge pad under feet. Ten healthy subjects were recruited to stand for ten 15 s trials in each paradigm. This study used simultaneously acquired electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) to investigate changes in the human cortico-muscular coupling relationship and functional brain network characteristics during balance control. The coherence and causality of EEG and EMG signals were calculated by magnitude-squared coherence (MSC) and transfer entropy (TE). It was found that changes in balance strategies may lead to a shift in cortico-muscular coherence (CMC) from the beta band to the gamma band when the difficulty of balance increased. As subjects performed the four standing balance paradigms, the causality of the beta band and the gamma band was stronger in the descending neural pathway than that in the ascending neural pathway. A multi-rhythmic functional brain network with 19 EEG channels was constructed and analyzed based on graph theory, showing that its topology also changed with changes in balance difficulty. These results show an active adjustment of the sensorimotor system under different balance paradigms and provide new insights into the endogenous physiological mechanisms underlying the control of standing balance.

IntroductionFunctional brain networks (FBNs) estimated from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data has become a potentially useful way for computer-aided diagnosis of neurological disorders, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Currently, Pearson's correlation (PC) is the most widely-used method for constructing FBNs. Despite its popularity and simplicity, the conventional PC-based method usually results in dense networks where regions-of-interest (ROIs) are densely connected. This is not accordance with the biological prior that ROIs may be sparsely connected in the brain. To address this issue, previous studies proposed to employ a threshold or l_1-regularizer to construct sparse FBNs. However, these methods usually ignore rich topology structures, such as modularity that has been proven to be an important property for improving the information processing ability of the brain.MethodsTo this end, in this paper, we propose an accurate module induced PC (AM-PC) model to estimate FBNs with a clear modular structure, by including sparse and low-rank constraints on the Laplacian matrix of the network. Based on the property that zero eigenvalues of graph Laplacian matrix indicate the connected components, the proposed method can reduce the rank of the Laplacian matrix to a pre-defined number and obtain FBNs with an accurate number of modules.ResultsTo validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we use the estimated FBNs to classify subjects with MCI from healthy controls. Experimental results on 143 subjects from Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) with resting-state functional MRIs show that the proposed method achieves better classification performance than previous methods.

IntroductionThe diagnosis of psychiatric disorders is mostly based on the clinical evaluation of the patient's signs and symptoms. Deep learning binary-based classification models have been developed to improve the diagnosis but have not yet reached clinical practice, in part due to the heterogeneity of such disorders. Here, we propose a normative model based on autoencoders.MethodsWe trained our autoencoder on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data from healthy controls. The model was then tested on schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients to estimate how each patient deviated from the norm and associate it with abnormal functional brain networks' (FBNs) connectivity. Rs-fMRI data processing was conducted within the FMRIB Software Library (FSL), which included independent component analysis and dual regression. Pearson's correlation coefficients between the extracted blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) time series of all FBNs were calculated, and a correlation matrix was generated for each subject.Results and discussionWe found that the functional connectivity related to the basal ganglia network seems to play an important role in the neuropathology of BD and SCZ, whereas in ADHD, its role is less evident. Moreover, the abnormal connectivity between the basal ganglia network and the language network is more specific to BD. The connectivity between the higher visual network and the right executive control and the connectivity between the anterior salience network and the precuneus networks are the most relevant in SCZ and ADHD, respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed model could identify functional connectivity patterns that characterize different psychiatric disorders, in agreement with the literature. The abnormal connectivity patterns from the two independent SCZ groups of patients were similar, demonstrating that the presented normative model was also generalizable. However, the group-level differences did not withstand individual-level analysis implying that psychiatric disorders are highly heterogeneous. These findings suggest that a precision-based medical approach, focusing on each patient's specific functional network changes may be more beneficial than the traditional group-based diagnostic classification.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one common psychiatric illness that manifests in neurological and developmental disorders, which can last throughout a person's life and cause challenges in social interaction, communication, and behavior. Since the standard ASD diagnosis is highly based on the symptoms of the disease, it is difficult to make an early diagnosis to take the best cure opportunity. Compared to the standard methods, functional brain network (FBN) could reveal the statistical dependence among neural architectures in brains and provide potential biomarkers for the early neuro-disease diagnosis and treatment of some neurological disorders. However, there are few FBN estimation methods that take into account the noise during the data acquiring process, resulting in poor quality of FBN and thus poor diagnosis results. To address such issues, we provide a brand-new approach for estimating FBNs under a noise modeling framework. In particular, we introduce a noise term to model the representation errors and impose a regularizer to incorporate noise prior into FBNs estimation. More importantly, the proposed method can be formulated as conducting traditional FBN estimation based on transformed fMRI data, which means the traditionalmethods can be elegantlymodified to support noisemodeling. That is, we provide a plug-and-play noise module capable of being embedded into different methods and adjusted according to different noise priors. In the end, we conduct abundant experiments to identify ASD fromnormal controls (NCs) based on the constructed FBNs to illustrate the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed method. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)-associated damage to hub regions can lead to disrupted modular structures of functional brain networks and may result in widespread cognitive and behavioral deficits. The spatial layout of brain connections and modules is essential for understanding the reorganization of brain networks to trauma. We investigated the roles of hubs in inter-subnetwork information coordination and integration using participation coefficients (PCs) in 74 patients with acute mTBI and 51 matched healthy controls. In some brain networks, such as default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN), mild TBI patients had decreased PC levels, while this measure was saliently increased in patients in other networks, such as the visual network. The hub disruption index was defined as the gradient of a straight line fitted to scatterplots of individual mTBI in participation coefficient versus mean participation coefficient of healthy groups. There was a trend of radical reorganization of some efficient "hub" nodes in patients (κ = -0.15), compared with controls (κ close to 0). The PC of brain hubs can also differentiate mTBI patients from controls with an 88% accuracy, and decreased PC levels in FPN can predict patient' s worse cognitive information processing speed (r = 0.36, p < 0.002) and working memory performance (r = 0.35, p < 0.002). Reduced PC within the DMN was associated with patients' complaints of post-concussion symptoms (r = -0.35, p < 0.002). Introduction: With the increasing demand for human-machine collaboration systems, more and more attention has been paid to the influence of human factors on the performance and security of the entire system. Especially in high-risk, high-precision, and difficult special tasks (such as space station maintenance tasks, anti-terrorist EOD tasks, surgical robot teleoperation tasks, etc.), there are higher requirements for the operator's perception and cognitive level. However, as the human brain is a complex and open giant system, the perception ability and cognitive level of the human are dynamically variable, so that it will seriously affect the performance and security of the whole system. Methods: The method proposed in this paper innovatively explained this phenomenon from two dimensions of brain space and time and attributed the dynamic changes of perception, cognitive level, and operational skills to the mental state diversity and the brain neuroplasticity. In terms of the mental state diversity, the mental states evoked paradigm and the functional brain network analysis method during work were proposed. In terms of neuroplasticity, the cognitive training intervention paradigm and the functional brain network analysis method were proposed. Twenty-six subjects participated in the mental state evoked experiment and the cognitive training intervention experiment. Results: The results showed that (1) the mental state of the subjects during work had the characteristics of dynamic change, and due to the influence of stimulus conditions and task patterns, the mental state showed diversity. There were significant differences between functional brain networks in different mental states, the information processing efficiency and the mechanism of brain area response had changed significantly. (2) The small-world attributes of the functional brain network of the subjects before and after the cognitive training experiment were significantly different. The brain had adjusted the distribution of information flow and resources, reducing costs and increasing efficiency as a whole. It was demonstrated that the global topology of the cortical connectivity network was reconfigured and neuroplasticity was altered through cognitive training intervention. Discussion: In summary, this paper revealed that mental state and neuroplasticity could change the information processing efficiency and the response mechanism of brain area, thus causing the change of perception, cognitive level and operational skills, which provided a theoretical basis for studying the relationship between neural information processing and behavior. We aimed to develop advanced machine learning models using electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye-tracking data to predict the mental workload associated with engaging in various surgical tasks.Traditional methods of evaluating mental workload often involve self-report scales, which are subject to individual biases. Due to the multidimensional nature of mental workload, there is a pressing need to identify factors that contribute to mental workload across different surgical tasks.EEG and eye-tracking data from 26 participants performing Matchboard and Ring Walk tasks from the da Vinci simulator and the pattern cut and suturing tasks from the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program were used to develop an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model for mental workload evaluation.The developed XGBoost models demonstrated strong predictive performance with R2 values of 0.82, 0.81, 0.82, and 0.83 for the Matchboard, Ring Walk, pattern cut, and suturing tasks, respectively. Key features for predicting mental workload included task average pupil diameter, complexity level, average functional connectivity strength at the temporal lobe, and the total trajectory length of the nondominant eye’s pupil. Integrating features from both EEG and eye-tracking data significantly enhanced the performance of mental workload evaluation models, as evidenced by repeated-measures t-tests yielding p-values less than 0.05. However, this enhancement was not observed in the Pattern Cut task (repeated-measures t-tests; p > 0.05).The findings underscore the potential for machine learning and multidimensional feature integration to predict mental workload and thereby improve task design and surgical training.The advanced mental workload prediction models could serve as instrumental tools to enhance our understanding of surgeons’ cognitive demands and significantly improve the effectiveness of surgical training programs. The aim of this study was to investigate the inner link between the small-world brain network and inhibitory control. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to construct a neurofeedback (NF) training system and regulate the frontal small-world brain network. The small-world network downregulation group (DOWN, n = 17) and the small-world network upregulation group (UP, n = 17) received five days of fNIRS-NF training and performed the color–word Stroop task before and after training. The behavioral and functional brain network topology results of both groups were analyzed by a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), which showed that the upregulation training helped to improve inhibitory control. The upregulated small-world brain network exhibits an increase in the brain network regularization, links widely dispersed brain resources, and reduces the lateralization of brain functional networks between hemispheres. This suggests an inherent correlation between small-world functional brain networks and inhibitory control; moreover, dynamic optimization under cost efficiency trade-offs provides a neural basis for inhibitory control. Inhibitory control is not a simple function of a single brain region or connectivity but rather an emergent property of a broader network.

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) experience changes in both the structure and function of their brain networks. In the past, cognitive impairment was often classified based on connectivity features, which only reflected the characteristics of the binary brain network or weighted brain network. It exhibited limited interpretability and stability. This study aims to quantitatively characterize the topological properties of brain functional networks (BFNs) using multi-threshold derivative (MTD), and to establish a new classification framework for end-stage renal disease with mild cognitive impairment (ESRDaMCI). The dynamic BFNs (DBFNs) were constructed and binarized with multiple thresholds, and then their topological properties were extracted from each binary brain network. These properties were then quantified by calculating their derivative curves and expressing them as multi-threshold derivative (MTD) features. The classification results of MTD features were compared with several commonly used DBFN features, and the effectiveness of MTD features in the classification of ESRDaMCI was evaluated based on the classification performance test. The results indicated that the linear fusion of MTD features improved classification performance and outperformed individual MTD features. Its accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 85.98 ± 2.92%, 86.10 ± 4.11%, and 81.54 ± 4.27%, respectively. Finally, the feature weights of MTD were analyzed, and MTD-cc had the highest weight percentage of 28.32% in the fused features. The MTD features effectively supplemented traditional feature quantification by addressing the issue of indistinct classification differentiation. It improved the quantification of topological properties and provided more detailed features for diagnosing cognitive disorders.

Studies have shown that attention bias can affect behavioral indicators in patients with depression, but it is still unclear how this bias affects the brain network topology of patients with mild depression (MD). Therefore, a novel functional brain network analysis and hierarchical clustering methods were used to explore the abnormal brain topology of MD patients based on EEG signals during the visual search paradigm. The behavior results showed that the reaction time of MD group was significantly higher than that of normal group. The results of functional brain network indicated significant differences in functional connections between the two groups, the amount of inter-hemispheric long-distance connections are much larger than intra-hemispheric short-distance connections. Patients with MD showed significantly lower local efficiency and clustering coefficient, destroyed community structure of frontal lobe and parietal-occipital lobe, frontal asymmetry, especially in beta band. In addition, the average value of long-distance connections between left frontal and right parietal-occipital lobes presented significant correlation with depressive symptoms. Our results suggested that MD patients achieved long-distance connections between the frontal and parietal-occipital regions by sacrificing the connections within the regions, which might provide new insights into the abnormal cognitive processing mechanism of depression.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with the impaired integrating and segregating of related information that is expanded within the large-scale brain network. The varying ASD symptom severities have been explored, relying on their behaviors and related brain activity, but how to effectively predict ASD symptom severity needs further exploration. In this study, we aim to investigate whether the ASD symptom severity could be predicted with electroencephalography (EEG) metrics. Based on a publicly available dataset, the EEG brain networks were constructed, and four types of EEG metrics were calculated. Then, we statistically compared the brain network differences among ASD children with varying severities, i.e., high/low autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) scores, as well as with the typically developing (TD) children. Thereafter, the EEG metrics were utilized to validate whether they could facilitate the prediction of the ASD symptom severity. The results demonstrated that both high- and low-scoring ASD children showed the decreased long-range frontal-occipital connectivity, increased anterior frontal connectivity and altered network properties. Furthermore, we found that the four types of EEG metrics are significantly correlated with the ADOS scores, and their combination can serve as the features to effectively predict the ASD symptom severity. The current findings will expand our knowledge of network dysfunction in ASD children and provide new EEG metrics for predicting the symptom severity.

The human brain controls various cognitive functions via the functional coordination of multiple brain regions in an efficient and robust way. However, the relationship between consciousness state and the control mode of brain networks is poorly explored. Using multi-channel EEG, the present study aimed to characterize the abnormal control architecture of functional brain networks in the patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). Resting state EEG data were collected from 40 DOC patients with different consciousness levels and 24 healthy subjects. Functional brain networks were constructed in five different EEG frequency bands and the broadband in the source level. Subsequently, a control architecture framework based on the minimum dominating set was applied to investigate the of control mode of functional brain networks for the subjects with different conscious states. Results showed that regardless of the consciousness levels, the functional networks of human brain operate in a distributed and overlapping control architecture different from that of random networks. Compared to the healthy controls, the patients have a higher control cost manifested by more minimum dominating nodes and increased degree of distributed control, especially in the alpha band. The ability to withstand network attack for the control architecture is positive correlated with the consciousness levels. The distributed of control increased correlation levels with Coma Recovery Scale-Revised score and improved separation between unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimal consciousness state. These findings may benefit our understanding of consciousness and provide potential biomarkers for the assessment of consciousness levels.

Adolescence is the peak period for the onset of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Brain networks of cognitive and affective control in adolescents are not well developed when their exposure to external stimuli suddenly increases. Reasonable parental monitoring is especially important during this period. To examine the role of parental monitoring in the development of functional brain networks of GAD, we conducted a cross-validation-based predictive study based on the functional brain networks of 192 participants. We found that a set of functional brain networks, especially the default mode network and its connectivity with the frontoparietal network, could predict the ages of adolescents, which was replicated in three independent samples. Importantly, the difference between predicted age and chronological age significantly mediated the relationship between parental monitoring and anxiety levels. These findings suggest that inadequate parental monitoring plays a crucial role in the delayed development of specific brain networks associated with GAD in adolescents. Our work highlights the important role of parental monitoring in adolescent development.

Automatic diagnosis of brain diseases based on brain connectivity network (BCN) classification is one of the hot research fields in medical image analysis. The functional brain network reflects the brain functional activities and structural brain network reflects the neural connections of the main brain regions. It is of great significance to explore and explain the inner mechanism of the brain and to understand and treat brain diseases. In this paper, based on the graph structure characteristics of brain network, the fusion model of functional brain network and structural brain network is designed to classify the diagnosis of brain mental diseases. Specifically, the main work of this paper is to use the Laplacian graph embed the information of diffusion tensor imaging, which contains the characteristics of structural brain networks, into the functional brain network with hyper-order functional connectivity information built based on functional magnetic resonance data using the sparse representation method, to obtain brain network with both functional and structural characteristics. Projection of the brain network and the two original modes data to the kernel space respectively and then classified by the multi-task learning method. Experiments on the epilepsy dataset show that our method has better performance than several state-of-the-art methods. Covering neuroimaging evidence has demonstrated that epileptic symptoms are associated with the disrupted topological architecture of the brain network. Infantile spasms (IS) as an age-specific epileptic encephalopathy also showed abnormal structural or functional connectivity in specific brain regions or specific networks. However, little is known about the topological alterations of whole-brain functional networks in patients with IS. To fill this gap, we used the graph theoretical analysis to investigate the topological properties (whole-brain small-world property and modular interaction) in 17 patients with IS and 34 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. The functional networks in both groups showed efficient small-world architecture over the sparsity range from 0.05 to 0.4. While patients with IS showed abnormal global properties characterized by significantly decreased normalized clustering coefficient, normalized path length, small-worldness, local efficiency, and significantly increased global efficiency, implying a shift toward a randomized network. Modular analysis revealed decreased intramodular connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network but increased inter-modular connectivity between the cingulo-opercular network and occipital network. Moreover, the decreased intra-modular connectivity in DMN was significantly negatively correlated with seizure frequency. The inter-modular connectivity between the cinguloopercular and occipital network also showed a significant correlation with epilepsy frequency. Together, the current study revealed the disrupted topological organization of the whole-brain functional network, which greatly advances our understanding of neuronal architecture in IS and may contribute to predict the prognosis of IS as disease biomarkers. Functional neural activities manifest geometric patterns, as evidenced by the evolving network topology of functional connectivities (FC) even in the resting state. In this work, we propose a novel manifold‐based geometric neural network for functional brain networks (called "Geo‐Net4Net" for short) to learn the intrinsic low‐dimensional feature representations of resting‐state brain networks on the Riemannian manifold. This tool allows us to answer the scientific question of how the spontaneous fluctuation of FC supports behavior and cognition. We deploy a set of positive maps and rectified linear unit (ReLU) layers to uncover the intrinsic low‐dimensional feature representations of functional brain networks on the Riemannian manifold taking advantage of the symmetric positive‐definite (SPD) form of the correlation matrices. Due to the lack of well‐defined ground truth in the resting state, existing learning‐based methods are limited to unsupervised methodologies. To go beyond this boundary, we propose to self‐supervise the feature representation learning of resting‐state functional networks by leveraging the task‐based counterparts occurring before and after the underlying resting state. With this extra heuristic, our Geo‐Net4Net allows us to establish a more reasonable understanding of resting‐state FCs by capturing the geometric patterns (aka. spectral/shape signature) associated with resting states on the Riemannian manifold. We have conducted extensive experiments on both simulated data and task‐based functional resonance magnetic imaging (fMRI) data from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) database, where our Geo‐Net4Net not only achieves more accurate change detection results than other state‐of‐the‐art counterpart methods but also yields ubiquitous geometric patterns that manifest putative insights into brain function. Grey matter volume reductions in the right superior temporal gyrus (rSTG) were observed in young adults who learned to ride a unicycle. As these decreases were correlated with the acquired ability in unicycling, the authors interpreted the change as a brain tissue reorganization to increase postural control's automated and efficient coordination. The current study aims to further corroborate this interpretation by looking at changes in the functional brain network in the very same sample of participants. For this reason, we applied graph theory, a mathematics field used to study network structure functionality. Four global and two local graph-theoretical parameters were calculated to measure whole brain and rSTG specific changes in functional network activity following the three-week-unicycle training. Findings revealed that the Local Efficiency of the rSTG was significantly elevated after the intervention indicating an increase in fault tolerance of the rSTG, possibly reflecting decentralisation of rSTG specific functions to neighbouring nodes. Structural and functional brain networks are generated from two scan sequences of magnetic resonance imaging data, which can provide different perspectives for describing pathological changes caused by brain diseases. Recent studies found that fusing these two types of brain networks improves performance in brain disease identification. However, traditional fusion models combine these brain networks at a single granularity, ignoring the natural multi-granularity structure of brain networks that can be divided into the edge, node, and graph levels. To this end, this paper proposes a Multi-modal Multi-granularity Fusion Neural Networks (MMF-NNs) framework for brain networks, which integrates the features of the multi-modal brain network from global (i.e., graph-level) and local (i.e., edge-level and node-level) granularities to take full advantage of the topological information. Specifically, we design an interactive feature learning module at the local granularity to learn feature maps of structural and functional brain networks at the edge-level and the node-level, respectively. In that way, these two types of brain networks are fused during the feature learning process. At the global granularity, a multi-modal decomposition bilinear pooling module is designed to learn the graph-level joint representation of these brain networks. Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a neurological-based learning disorder that affects 5-17.5% of children. Handwriting difficulty is a prevailing symptom of dyslexia, but its neural mechanisms remain elusive. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), this study examined functional brain networks associated with handwriting in a copying task in Chinese children with DD (n = 17) and age-matched children (n = 36). We found that dyslexics showed reduced network connectivity between the sensory-motor network (SMN) and the visual network (VN), and between the default mode network (DMN) and the ventral attention network (VAN) during handwriting, but not during drawing geometric figures. Moreover, the connectivity strength of the networks showing group differences was correlated with handwriting speed, reading and working memory, suggesting that the handwriting deficit in DD is linked with disruption of a largescale brain network supporting motoric, linguistic and executive control processes. Taken together, this study demonstrates the alternations of functional brain networks that underly the handwriting deficit in Chinese dyslexia, providing a new clue for the neural basis of DD. Machine learning algorithms have been widely applied in diagnostic tools for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), revealing an altered brain connectivity. However, little is known about whether an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based brain network is related to the severity of ASD symptoms in a large-scale cohort. We propose a graph convolution neural network-based framework that can generate sparse hierarchical graph representations for functional brain connectivity. Instead of assigning initial features for each node, we utilized a feature extractor to derive node features and the extracted representations can be fed to a hierarchical graph self-attention framework to effectively represent the entire graph. By incorporating connectivity embeddings in the feature extractor, we propose adjacency embedding networks to characterize the heterogeneous representations of the brain connectivity. Our proposed model variants outperform the benchmarking model with different configurations of adjacency embedding networks and types of functional connectivity matrices. Using this approach with the best configuration (SHEN atlas for node definition, Tikhonov correlation for connectivity estimation, and identity-adjacency embedding), we were able to predict individual ASD severity levels with a meaningful accuracy: the mean absolute error (MAE) and correlation between predicted and observed ASD severity scores resulted in 0.96, and r = 0.61 (P < 0.0001), respectively. To obtain a better understanding on how to generate better representations, we investigate the relationships between the extracted feature embeddings and the graph theory-based nodal measurements using canonical correlation analysis. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with the impaired integrating and segregating of related information that is expanded within the large-scale brain network. The varying ASD symptom severities have been explored, relying on their behaviors and related brain activity, but how to effectively predict ASD symptom severity needs further exploration. In this study, we aim to investigate whether the ASD symptom severity could be predicted with electroencephalography (EEG) metrics. Based on a publicly available dataset, the EEG brain networks were constructed, and four types of EEG metrics were calculated. Then, we statistically compared the brain network differences among ASD children with varying severities, i.e., high/low autism diagnostic observation schedule (ADOS) scores, as well as with the typically developing (TD) children. Thereafter, the EEG metrics were utilized to validate whether they could facilitate the prediction of the ASD symptom severity. The results demonstrated that both high- and low-scoring ASD children showed the decreased long-range frontal-occipital connectivity, increased anterior frontal connectivity and altered network properties. Furthermore, we found that the four types of EEG metrics are significantly correlated with the ADOS scores, and their combination can serve as the features to effectively predict the ASD symptom severity. Studies have shown that attention bias can affect behavioral indicators in patients with depression, but it is still unclear how this bias affects the brain network topology of patients with mild depression (MD). Therefore, a novel functional brain network analysis and hierarchical clustering methods were used to explore the abnormal brain topology of MD patients based on EEG signals during the visual search paradigm. The behavior results showed that the reaction time of MD group was significantly higher than that of normal group. The results of functional brain network indicated significant differences in functional connections between the two groups, the amount of inter-hemispheric long-distance connections are much larger than intra-hemispheric short-distance connections. Patients with MD showed significantly lower local efficiency and clustering coefficient, destroyed community structure of frontal lobe and parietal-occipital lobe, frontal asymmetry, especially in beta band. In addition, the average value of long-distance connections between left frontal and right parietal-occipital lobes presented significant correlation with depressive symptoms. Our results suggested that MD patients achieved long-distance connections between the frontal and parietal-occipital regions by sacrificing the connections within the regions, which might provide new insights into the abnormal cognitive processing mechanism of depression. To study whether Tai Chi (TC) practice can improve the brain connectivity of the prefrontal lobe of college students, the positive psychological capital questionnaires and resting EEG signals were acquired from 50 college students including 25 TC practitioners and 25 demographically matched TC healthy controls. The results showed that the score of the positive psychological capital questionnaire of the TC group was significantly higher than that of the control group, and the node degree of the frontal lobe and temporal lobe of both groups was positively correlated with the score of the positive psychological capital questionnaire. In addition, the response time of the TC group under auditory stimulation was significantly shorter than that of the control group, and there was a significant positive correlation between response time and its characteristic path length, and a significant negative correlation with global efficiency. Meanwhile, during the selected range of sparsity, the difference in global network parameters between two groups is significant in the alpha band. Under all single sparsity, the clustering coefficient, global efficiency, and local efficiency of the TC group have a higher trend, while the characteristic path length tended to be shorter. In the analysis of the local characteristics of the resting brain functional network, it was found that the node degree of the frontal lobe and temporal lobe of the TC group was higher, and the difference was significant in some nodes. Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by the development of multiple symptoms, with incidences rapidly increasing worldwide. An important step in the early diagnosis of ASD is to identify informative biomarkers. Currently, the use of functional brain network (FBN) is deemed important for extracting data on brain imaging biomarkers. Unfortunately, most existing studies have reported the utilization of the information from the connection to train the classifier; such an approach ignores the topological information and, in turn, limits its performance. Thus, effective utilization of the FBN provides insights for improving the diagnostic performance. Methods: We propose the combination of the information derived from both FBN and its corresponding graph theory measurements to identify and distinguish ASD from normal controls (NCs). Specifically, a multi-kernel support vector machine (MK-SVM) was used to combine multiple types of information. Results: The experimental results illustrate that the combination of information from multiple connectome features (i.e., functional connections and graph measurements) can provide a superior identification performance with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) of 0.9191 and an accuracy of 82.60%. Furthermore, the graph theoretical analysis illustrates that the significant nodal graph measurements and consensus connections exists mostly in the salience network (SN), default mode network (DMN), attention network, frontoparietal network, and social network. Conclusion: This work provides insights into potential neuroimaging biomarkers that may be used for the diagnosis of ASD and offers a new perspective for the exploration of the brain pathophysiology of ASD through machine learning. • A novel label-guided low-rank FBN learning framework is proposed, which explicitly integrates the label information of data samples by the regularization terms into the learning model. This integration ensures that brain network learning is not entirely isolated from subsequent classification tasks. Moreover, the presence of label information typically enhances the discriminative power of the learned network. Guided by the label information, the proposed method implicitly focuses on features relevant to brain disorders. As a result, the resulting network structure aligns with the specific cognitive or disease-related features of interest, leading to more accurate and biologically meaningful representations. • The proposed method concurrently considers FBNs across all the subjects, distinguishing itself from most existing methods that independently learn FBNs for each subject. Concretely, the method considers relationships among different individuals and utilizes their similar topological structures by the low-rank constraint. Moreover, such a constraint transfers the information learned during the optimization of brain networks guided by labels to the testing subject. • The presented method constitutes a versatile framework that can be effectively employed in the analysis of various brain pathologies. Our method addresses the interplay between label information and data characteristics by flexibly adjusting the weighting of regularization terms, thereby enhancing adaptability to diverse tasks and datasets. This flexibility allows for its potential application in studying other brain disorders and exploring the relationships between brain connectivity and various cognitive conditions. Functional brain network (FBN) has played a pivotal role in unraveling the inherent mechanism of cognition/behavior and investigating neuropsychological disorders. Particularly, growing evidence suggests that FBNs have shown great potential in classifying brain disorders such as subcortical vascular cognitive impairment (SVCI). However, learning a high-quality FBN is still challenging since there is no ground truth. Most traditional methods tend to focus on learning FBNs independently of the downstream task. This practice neglects the valuable label information crucial for accurate classification. Besides, the methodology of constructing brain networks in an isolated, individualistic manner sidesteps the common information among individuals. To address these issues, we developed a new FBN joint learning strategy named Label-Guided Low-rank Approximation (LGLA). LGLA integrates label information from training subjects and uses unlabeled testing subjects for auxiliary training, enhancing the discriminative power of FBN features tailored to testing subjects. By enforcing class-specific similarities and differences, and applying a low-rank constraint to capture shared information, LGLA presents an optimization framework that can be effectively solved. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed FBN learning method for identifying SVCI. The proposed method achieved an accuracy of 75.70% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.8233 in the task of identifying patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). For identifying patients with non-amnestic mild cognitive impairment (naMCI), it achieved an accuracy of 63.64% and an AUC of 0.7857, while the task of identifying patients with no cognitive impairment (NCI), it achieved an accuracy of 63.64% and an AUC of 0.7917. Additionally, we further explored the brain network features and discovered potential biomarkers for personalized diagnosis.
