The shipping industry transports nearly 80% of the goods worldwide and requires large funding. The shipping industry shifted from debt to equity as the source of funding in the last decade. Because most shipping companies already had their initial public offering before 2013, these companies tend to engage in follow-on equity offerings (FPO). However, the challenge faced by the shipping companies is the lack of knowledge on successful FPO. The purpose of this study is to identify the most influential factors affecting shipping companies’ FPO from the investor perspective. This research applies a hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making model integrating the fuzzy-Delphi method and Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory, processing survey responses covering four dimensions and 16 criteria from 33 investment experts. The results show that financial indicator is the primary cause affecting offering condition, technical indicators. This paper investigated how hiring one of the Big 4 auditing firms helps initial public offering (IPO) owners attract venture capitalists' (VCs) backing when going public to address the gap in auditing and venture capital literature. For this, the paper examined a large dataset from 1995 to 2019 consisting of 33,536 IPO firms from 22 countries with diverse socioeconomic, political, and cultural contexts. The study found that hiring Big 4 auditors increases IPO owners' chances of recruiting VCs by up to 50%. The analysis also supports prior findings, which state that IPO owners strategically choose Big 4 audit firms to lower agency costs and send quality signals to improve openness and disclosure as well as boost VCs' confidence in the IPO market. This study examined the determinants of the long-term performance of 351 initial public offerings (IPOs) launched in Malaysia over the 2002-2010 period. This paper used a panel regression analysis framework based on the ordinary least squares (OLS) technique to examine the potential determinants of IPOs' long-term performance. The findings revealed that the volatility of aftermarket returns, the dummy ACE market and concentration ownership significantly influence the long-term performance of Malaysian IPOs. This paper offers important implications specifically for investors as the findings can help them understand more about public companies' long-term performance and how to better predict their performance. We study the relationship between ownership concentration and firm value using hand-collected data on the stakes of owner–managers before and after initial public offerings (IPOs). We instrument for the reduction in stake using market returns shortly before IPOs. Short-run market returns are plausible instruments because owners engage in market timing by selling more when prior returns are high, but high short-run returns are unlikely to directly affect firm value years after the IPO. As predicted by agency theory, a large reduction in ownership concentration at the IPO is negatively related to valuation. Future asset growth is low when owners have low stakes. This research paper shed light on how small cap companies acquire funds. It focuses on a new trend available for small companies and for private investors instead of an old option or traditional way of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) to raise money. The study focuses on changes happening. This study looked at the asymmetric (nonlinear) links between Pakistan's environmental pollution, trade balance, human development index, foreign direct investment, natural resource rent, and IPO variability. The research used an annual data set from 1992 to 2019 and applied a unique co-integrating method known as asymmetric ARDL co-integration approach. The macroeconomic variables of environmental pollution, trade balance, human development index, foreign direct investment, and natural resource rent were found to have significant influences on IPO variability in both long-run and short-run asymmetric impacts. These findings highlight the important roles of the used variables in increasing IPO variability. This research suggests that Pakistan's weak macroeconomic conditions reflect the country's inadequate capital market growth. The country's lower IPO variability indicates a lack of trust among potential issuers and investors as a result of Pakistan's weak macroeconomic indices. This paper addresses a void in the research on auditing and initial public offering (IPO) failure by investigating the impact of the Big 4 auditing firms on the likelihood of an IPO failure. This research is the first comprehensive analysis of more than 33,000 global IPOs that either failed or were successful between 1995 and 2019 across a wide range of nations with vastly different regulatory, cultural, and economic settings. A cross-sectional probit regression model is utilized to investigate the influence of hiring the Big 4 auditing firms on IPO failure, building upon prior studies on IPO failure. We found strong evidence that IPO failure rates were diminished by up to 67% when one of the Big 4 auditing firms was involved in auditing the IPO prospectus. For IPO founders, hiring Big 4 auditors before an IPO is a quality signaling strategy that minimizes the risk of a failed IPO by reducing information asymmetry among IPO participants. Our findings provide useful policy implications. Hiring one of the Big 4 auditing firms before an IPO is a reassuring signaling strategy for founders, since it decreases information asymmetry among IPO investors and so lowers the risk of the IPO failing. Primary market investors now have access to credible evidence indicating that backing IPOs from companies that use the Big 4 auditing firms increases the likelihood of such IPOs being listed on stock exchanges and yields positive returns. This is the first time, as far as the academicians are aware, that conclusive evidence has been found of a strong inverse association between the presence of Big 4 audits and failure risk for IPO firms. Our research could be helpful to primary market regulators since it shows how crucial it is to encourage Big 4 audits in IPO companies. Initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions represent important opportunities for investors to exit and harvest their entrepreneurial success. Some firms are acquired shortly after their initial public offerings. This exit strategy is known as a double exit. In addition, issuing firms may choose to reincorporate in Delaware during their IPOs. In this study, we use hand-collected data from 1993 to 2020 to investigate whether and to what extent Delaware reincorporation may affect the M&As in the post-IPO stage. We use a Cox proportional hazard model to test the relation between Delaware reincorporation and the likelihood of being acquired for our sample IPOs. Recognizing that Delaware reincorporation is not a random decision, we adopt a Heckman switching regression method to estimate the relation between Delaware reincorporation and takeover premiums and announcement returns. We report that IPO firms choosing to reincorporate in Delaware experience a higher likelihood of being acquired compared to those IPO firms choosing to remain incorporated in their home states. We further document that IPO firms choosing to reincorporate in Delaware receive lower premiums in acquisitions, and experience lower abnormal returns on announcements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study seeks to explore the intricate relationship among supply chain transparency, digitalization and idiosyncratic risk, with a specific focus on newly public firms. The objective is to determine whether supply chain transparency effectively mitigates idiosyncratic risk within this context and to understand the potential impact of digitalization on this dynamic interplay. Design/methodology/approach: The study utilizes data from Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) on China's Growth Enterprise Board (ChiNext) over the last five years, sourced from the CSMAR database and firms' annual reports. The research covers the period from 2009 to 2021, observing each firm for five years post-IPO. The final sample comprises 2,645 observations from 529 firms. The analysis employs the Hausman test, considering the panel-data structure of the sample and favoring fixed effects over random effects. Additionally, it applies the high-dimensional fixed effects (HDFE) estimator to address unobserved heterogeneity. Findings: The analysis initially uncovered an inverted U-shaped relationship between supply chain transparency and idiosyncratic risk, indicating a delicate equilibrium where detrimental effects diminish and beneficial effects accelerate with increased transparency. Moreover, this inverted U-shaped relationship was notably more pronounced in newly public firms with a heightened level of firm digitalization. This observation implies that firm digitalization amplifies the impact of transparency on a firm's idiosyncratic risk. Originality/value: This study distinguishes itself by providing distinctive insights into supply chain transparency and idiosyncratic risk. Initially, we introduce and substantiate an inverted U-shaped correlation between supply chain transparency and idiosyncratic risk, challenging the conventional linear perspective. Secondly, we pioneer the connection between supply chain transparency and idiosyncratic risk, especially for newly public firms, thereby enhancing comprehension of financial implications. Underwriters play a pivotal role in the IPO process. Information entropy, a tool for measuring the uncertainty and complexity of information, has been widely applied to various issues in complex networks. Information entropy can quantify the uncertainty and complexity of nodes in the network, providing a unique analytical perspective and methodological support for this study. This paper employs a bipartite network analysis method to construct the relationship network between underwriters and accounting firms, using the centrality of underwriters in the network as a measure of their influence to explore the impact of underwriters' influence on the distribution of interests and audit outcomes. The findings indicate that a more pronounced influence of underwriters significantly increases the ratio of underwriting fees to audit fees. Higher influence often accompanies an increase in abnormal underwriting fees. Further research reveals that companies underwritten by more influential underwriters experience a decline in audit quality. Finally, the study reveals that a well-structured audit committee governance and the rationalization of market sentiments can mitigate the negative impacts of underwriters' influence. The innovation of this paper is that it enriches the content related to underwriters by constructing the relationship network between underwriters and accounting firms for the first time using a bipartite network through the lens of information entropy. This conclusion provides new directions for thinking about the motives and possibilities behind financial institutions' cooperation, offering insights for market regulation and policy formulation. SUMMARY: We examine whether firms undertaking an initial public offering (IPO) exhibit less earnings management when individual investment bankers have prior experience in public accounting. Although auditors are primarily responsible for providing external monitoring of the financial reporting process, individual bankers also have strong incentives to improve accounting quality in firms going public. We predict a negative relation between public accounting experience and IPO firms' earnings management because working in public practice fosters individual bankers' accounting expertise and conservative personalities. In exploiting unique disclosures of investment bankers' identities and characteristics in China, our analysis indicates that bankers with early-career public accounting experience constrain IPO firms' accrual-based earnings management. Consistent with expectations, we find that this evidence is more pronounced if the accounting firm that employed the future investment banker is larger, is permitted to audit listed companies, and was previously subject to a regulatory sanction. We investigate the financing and performance of international entrepreneurship in an environment that was characterized by severe information problems and very weak investor protection. Despite these problems, new ventures could raise large amounts of equity and debt on the Belgian capital market between 1890 and 1914. Many of these firms were international new ventures (INVs) with their main operations abroad, often far away from Belgium. We find that INVs raised much more capital but were less likely to pay a dividend than domestic new ventures (DNVs). They were less likely to issue a bond and had a higher cost of debt when operating further away from Belgium. Performance after listing was generally bad for new ventures throughout the period, but it was much worse for INVs than for DNVs. The objective of this study is to investigate short-run performance and whether the IPOs are over-priced or under-priced in various window periods. This study applies one-sample t-tests, capital asset pricing models, and market-adjusted excess return to quantify the short-term pricing performance as well as the risk and return of initial public offerings and market indices. The study investigates the claim that post-listing initial public offerings (IPOs) guarantee short-term gains. The twelve months following the listing, in particular, have seen the biggest gains. According to reports, investors who buy shares in IPOs get strong returns in this period. The market-adjusted initial returns for the IPOs registered on the National Stock Exchange between January 2019 and December 2020 have been found to be roughly 44%, per this analysis. This paper examines mutual funds' dual role as both clients and shareholders of broker banks. Mutual funds are more likely to hold and significantly overweight stocks of their broker banks. In line with the portfolio decisions, fund voting is biased toward broker management in contentious proposals. Such voting bias is inconsistent with maximizing broker banks' shareholder value yet significantly affects voting outcomes and the presence of contentious proposals at the banks' shareholder meetings. Furthermore, we show that although client funds are rewarded with preferential initial public offering allocations from connected brokers for their voting support, fund managers' engagement in reciprocal practices is ultimately determined by the economic tradeoffs they face. Our study not only uncovers a new mechanism—being brokers' friendly shareholders—through which the two parties maintain their quid pro quo relationships but also raises a broader concern about governance of important financial institutions. This study investigates the dynamics within entrepreneurial ecosystems, focusing on the influence of venture capital (VC) financing clusters and industry clusters on startup success. VC financing clusters, geographic hubs with intense VC funding activities, and industry clusters, regions with concentrated sector-specific firms, are integral components. Expanding existing research that links proximity to these clusters with successful exits through mergers and acquisitions (M&A), our study includes initial public offerings (IPOs) as a vital exit strategy. Results show that affiliations with venture capitalists in prominent VC financing clusters enhance M&A and IPO success for startups. Intriguingly, startups in industry strongholds exhibit a greater likelihood of M&A success, but, this effect is not seen for IPO exits. Additionally, the absence of startup co-location with venture capitalists in VC financing hubs does not impact IPO exits but hinders M&A success. These nuanced insights highlight the complex relationships within entrepreneurial ecosystems and underscore the need for tailored perspectives considering diverse exit pathways. The paper examines whether the structure of the risk factor disclosure in an IPO prospectus helps explain the cross-section of first-day returns in a sample of Chinese initial public offerings. This paper analyzes the semantics and content of risk disclosure based on an unsupervised machine learning algorithm. From both long-term and short-term perspectives, this paper explores how the information effect and risk effect of risk disclosure play their respective roles. The results show that risk disclosure has a stronger risk effect at the semantic novelty level and a more substantial information effect at the risk content level. A novel aspect of the paper lies in the use of text analysis (semantic novelty and content richness) to characterize the structure of the risk factor disclosure. The study shows that initial IPO returns negatively correlate with semantic novelty and content richness. We show the interaction between risk effect and information effect on risk disclosure under the nature of the same stock plate. We investigate how in the context of Corporate Venture Capital (CVC), the investment decisions affect the likelihood of their subsequent exit strategies. We use OLS and probit regression as well as Weibull distribution of residual values, given its reliability and validity for studying lifetime analysis. Based on a sample of 8722 VC-backed ventures with the first investment dates between 1999 and 2018 in United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK), the results show that the presence of CVCs positively affects the funding amounts and the duration of the investment. CVC funds are more generous and more patient than Independent Venture Capital (IVC) funds regarding their investments in ventures. Moreover, the findings provide evidence that the exit strategies are directly influenced by the funding amounts and the duration of the investment which are influenced, in turn, by the fund type. Greater funding increases the likelihood of IPO exit which is reduced by longer investment duration. Our results are robust to alternative estimation methods, namely two-stage treatment-effects regressions. An 11-year-old boy with profound hearing loss from birth has had his hearing restored within 30 days of being treated with AK-OTOF, a gene therapy developed by Akouos. The therapy was well tolerated, and no serious adverse events were reported. AK-OTOF is designed to restore hearing in individuals with a genetic form of hearing loss caused by mutations in the otoferlin gene. We examine how disclosure and manager reputation influence capital raised when there is no commercial substance underlying the investment. Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs or "blank check" companies) do not have operations or substantive assets at the IPO but promise to use the funds raised to acquire a private firm, generally within two years. Given the lack of commercial substance and historically poor ex post performance, it is unclear what SPACs disclose at the IPO and why investors invest. Although disclosure is important in traditional IPOs, the underlying information available differs for SPACs. Nonetheless, our evidence suggests disclosures are useful to SPAC investors, although differently than for traditional IPO investors. We also examine manager reputation and find prior SPAC or CEO experience and celebrity status are associated with funds raised. Female entrepreneurs and CEOs generally face greater challenges in securing funding to exploit entrepreneurial opportunities, yet contextual factors under which such challenges are more likely to arise are less understood. We find that female-led initial public offerings (IPOs) incur greater IPO underpricing, but this effect is moderated by their ownership structure, reflecting different institutional logics in which these firms operate. Specifically, the positive relationship between female CEOs and IPO underpricing is attenuated by venture capitalist ownership, whereas such a relationship is exacerbated by state ownership. Some have criticized mandatory securities regulation based on the claim that market competition alone adequately constrains exploitation of public investors in securities offerings. Other scholars support a mandatory regime. To date, empirical studies have been unable to resolve whether the securities laws actually provide meaningful protection to investors. This Article identifies transactional innovation in public offering markets as a case study of how going-public transactions would work if issuers could choose to relax some of the investor protections provided under the securities laws. In recent years, private companies that wanted to go public had a meaningful choice between a traditional initial public offering and a merger with a special purpose acquisition corporation (SPAC). Most of the direct and indirect investor protections that ordinarily apply in the initial public offering context are relaxed in the SPAC context. The Article argues that outcomes in SPAC markets, where investors have systematically received a bad bargain, provide powerful market evidence consistent with the premises underlying the investor protection rationale of the federal securities laws: public investors cannot fend for themselves in new issues of equity securities and need mandatory protections to avoid systematically overpaying. The design of the SPAC transactional structure is explained as a rational market response to a market in which public investors are vulnerable to systematically overvaluing new issues in the absence of mandatory investor protections. Regulators should address SPAC regulatory arbitrage by applying the public offering rules in the securities laws to all combinations between listed shell companies and private entities. We examine the impact of oil price uncertainty on IPO volume in the oil and gas sector. By using the implied volatility of oil options, a forward-looking uncertainty measure, we identify the effect of uncertainty on the going-public decision. Oil price uncertainty exhibits a strong negative relation to IPO volume. A one standard deviation decrease in the implied volatility results in a 29% increase in the number of quarterly IPOs. The effect is concentrated among the price-sensitive upstream producers. We further report that uncertainty positively impacts the IPO withdrawal decision and increases the value of postponing the offering. The Amazon basin experienced a prolonged drought condition during the 2010s, leading to a large-scale forest degradation destructive to ecosystems and human society. Elusive are issues as to whether the decadal drought is driven by external forcing or internal variability, and whether the drought will continue or recover soon. Using large ensemble simulations from a state-of-the-art climate model, here we find a negative-to-positive phase transition of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) explains ~45% (~40–49%) of the observed decadal drought of Amazon rainfall since 2010, much greater than the role of external forcing (~12%). Constraining future IPO phase transition reduces the uncertainty by ~38% from a range of −0.73 to + 0.31 mm day−1 decade−1 to a range of −0.42 to + 0.23 mm day−1 decade−1, of the near-term Amazon rainfall projection before 2040 under a mid-intensity emission scenario. Stocks are a popular investment with high risk due to rapid price fluctuations that are difficult to predict. Many investors do not understand the analysis of buying and selling stocks, making them hesitant to invest. For this reason, an analytical technique is needed that can determine the movement of stock prices in order to carry out planning, risk management, and decision-making. Banking stocks are among the important and popular stock sectors. One of the go public banking stocks is Bank Rakyat Indonesia stock. This research applies Long Short-Term Memory and Gated Recurrent Unit to produce a model that can accurately predict the stock price of Bank Rakyat Indonesia. Based on the implementation, GRU is the best model with MSE value of 4958.9168, RMSE 70.4195, and MAPE 1.1699%. The GRU model predict that there will be a decrease in stock prices in the next month. In an initial public offering (IPO) the firm can set the offer price of its shares, based on the valuation of the firm, by changing the number of shares. This study uses stock ownership records and hand-collected IPO data to analyze the offer prices, the underpricing of IPO shares (measured as the initial return, IR) and the relationship with the post-IPO ownership structure. Specifically, the paper focuses on individual IPO investors. The results show that for the lowest priced IPOs the IR is significantly higher priced IPOs. Furthermore, for the low-priced IPOs, there is a negative relationship between offer price and breadth of ownership. This implies that stocks with a low price can attract more investors than stocks with higher offer prices. However, for high-priced IPOs the relationship is positive, suggesting that also the IPOs with highest price attract more investors. Community engagement is fundamental for tertiary education, as it allows universities to connect with external stakeholders, create social impact, and improve the development of strategies for public engagement. The current study aims to evaluate the level of community engagement in tertiary education, assess the level of sustainable practices, and identify areas for improvement. The research employed a survey method, using a standardized questionnaire to gather data from 44 respondents, representing 35 European universities from nine countries. The survey covered various aspects of community engagement, such as university commitment, documentation, public awareness, investments, incentives, training, and stakeholder engagement. Quantitative analysis was employed using ANOVA and AHP to analyze the data collected from 20 questions. The results revealed that universities have a clear commitment to public engagement and have well-documented policies in place. However, there were areas identified for improvement, such as increasing investments to encourage public engagement and offering more training activities to support it. Additionally, the universities were found to have a limited target group for their community engagement activities and insufficient communication of the results of impact assessments. This study aims to determine whether the involvement of prestigious attorneys in issuing companies affects withdrawals in the initial public offering (IPO) market. There is little evidence on how the involvement of famous lawyers affects IPO withdrawal. The study considers a large dataset consisting of 24,312 IPOs that were either successful or withdrawn from 22 distinct IPO marketplaces between January 1995 and December 2019. We find that IPO issuers may benefit from engaging with reputed attorneys by leveraging exceptional legal or negotiating abilities as quality certification signals to reduce IPO investors' ex-ante uncertainty. Here, the objective is to protect their IPOs from withdrawal of at least by 22%. Multiple robustness tests validate the reliability of the results of this study. Special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) took the financial world by storm from 2020 to 2022 as an alternative to initial public offerings (IPOs). SPACs' usage during this time period was novel. Wall Street leveraged this unique financial vehicle to enrich themselves at the expense of mom-and-pop investors on Main Street. Though recent years have seen the use of SPACs decline precipitously in the face of regulatory threats from Capitol Hill and adverse rulings from state courts, this saga is rich with lessons. Foremost among them is determining how a financial instrument that created record-breaking poor returns was able to reach public markets in the first place and how such an outcome can be avoided in the future. Securities regulators in China occasionally suspend their IPO market. We explore the impact of IPO market suspension on IPO pricing. We find that IPOs interrupted by market suspensions are eventually priced at a higher level. The positive impact of IPO suspension on IPO offer price is more pronounced for IPOs backed by venture capitalists (VCs) and/or those with higher VC ownership. Further, we find that IPOs affected by market suspensions show poorer post‐IPO performance, and higher post‐IPO earnings management. Suspension‐affected firms ask for lower offer prices on seasoned equity offerings (SEOs) if they price their IPO shares at a higher level. Combined, our findings suggest that IPO suspensions result in an unexpected wealth transfer from secondary market investors to pre‐IPO investors, and thus the higher offer price for suspension‐affected IPOs is a manifestation of the wealth transfer. This study investigates how real earnings management (REM) in the initial public offering (IPO) year affects long-run post-IPO market performance. The empirical results show that the effect of REM on a firm's stock returns varies with the forms of REM. Abnormal production costs are positively associated with long-run returns, whereas abnormal cuts in discretionary expenses are negatively associated with long-run returns. These results suggest that investors are not fully aware of the implications of REM and initially undervalue or overvalue the firm based on different REM activities. Further, this study examines the long-run role of the media in the capital market by examining the impact of media coverage on the consequences of IPO firms' REM practices. The results indicate that the associations between REM and stock returns become weaker if the IPO firm is more visible through the media. Additional analyses show that retail investors are more likely to initially misprice REM activities and be influenced by media information. Compared with media coverage, audit quality or analyst following has a relatively less pronounced effect on the consequences of REM activities. These findings imply that media coverage appears to mitigate the influence of REM on stock returns, facilitating market efficiency after a firm's IPO in the long run. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
