Abstract

Health inequities exist largely among socially disadvantaged people who are denied the highest attainable standard of health available to many Americans. Access to culturally competent, high quality, first-contact primary care through school-based health centers is an effective way to reduce health inequities and, therefore, improve health outcomes for socially disadvantaged children and adolescents. School-based health centers (SBHCs) are an important, research-based strategy for creating access to health care and reducing health care disparities among low-income and minority children and adolescents. SBHCs should be an essential part of public health solutions that assure equal opportunities for all children to access needed health care services. (Contains 34 endnotes.)

3. Utility of Psychosocial Screening at a School-based Health Center.

Abstract

Evaluated the utility of the Pediatric Symptom Checklist for youth when completed by adolescents at a school-based health center (SBHC), noting how identification of psychosocial dysfunction and referral to mental health services improved academic functioning. Results support the utility of psychosocial screening and referral in SBHCs in facilitating recognition and treatment of mental health problems and improving academic functioning. (SM)

Abstract

The article reports that the American Nurses Association is in favor of the federal legislation for safe staffing in acute medical care settings. It further offers information on two bills filed in Massachusetts for the 2005-2006 session that offer divergent strategies for addressing patient safety and RN staffing. The U.S. House bill supported by the Massachusetts Nursing Association proposes that inadequate nurse staffing ratios result in inferior patient outcomes and increased "nurse burnout." The U.S. Senate bill supported by the Massachusetts Hospital Association reflects the belief that mandated minimum nurse staffing ratios in acute care hospitals represent inflexible policy.
