Deepfake technology is rapidly advancing, posing significant challenges to the detection of manipulated media content. Parallel to that, some adversarial attack techniques have been developed to fool the deepfake detectors and make deepfakes even more difficult to be detected. This paper explores the application of super resolution techniques as a possible adversarial attack in deepfake detection. Through our experiments, we demonstrate that minimal changes made by these methods in the visual appearance of images can have a profound impact on the performance of deepfake detection systems. We propose a novel attack using super resolution as a quick, black-box and effective method to camouflage fake images and/or generate false alarms on pristine images. Our results indicate that the usage of super resolution can significantly impair the accuracy of deepfake detectors, thereby highlighting the vulnerability of such systems to adversarial attacks. Deepfake detectors are typically trained on large sets of pristine and generated images, resulting in limited generalization capacity; they excel at identifying deepfakes created through methods encountered during training but struggle with those generated by unknown techniques. This paper introduces a learning approach aimed at significantly enhancing the generalization capabilities of deepfake detectors. Our method takes inspiration from the unique "fingerprints" that image generation processes consistently introduce into the frequency domain. These fingerprints manifest as structured and distinctly recognizable frequency patterns. We propose to train detectors using only pristine images injecting in part of them crafted frequency patterns, simulating the effects of various deepfake generation techniques without being specific to any. These synthetic patterns are based on generic shapes, grids, or auras. We evaluated our approach using diverse architectures across 25 different generation methods. The models trained with our approach were able to perform state-of-the-art deepfake detection, demonstrating also superior generalization capabilities in comparison with previous methods. Indeed, they are untied to any specific generation technique and can effectively identify deepfakes regardless of how they were made.

Recent advancements in large vision-language models enabled visual object detection in open-vocabulary scenarios, where object classes are defined in free-text formats during inference. In this paper, we aim to probe the state-of-the-art methods for open-vocabulary object detection to determine to what extent they understand fine-grained properties of objects and their parts. To this end, we introduce an evaluation protocol based on dynamic vocabulary generation to test whether models detect, discern, and assign the correct fine-grained description to objects in the presence of hard-negative classes. We contribute with a benchmark suite of increasing difficulty and probing different properties like color, pattern, and material. We further enhance our investigation by evaluating several state-of-the-art open-vocabulary object detectors using the proposed protocol and find that most existing solutions, which shine in standard open-vocabulary benchmarks, struggle to accurately capture and distinguish finer object details. We conclude the paper by highlighting the limitations of current methodologies and exploring promising research directions to overcome the discovered drawbacks. Recently emerged technologies based on Deep Learning (DL) achieved outstanding results on a variety of tasks in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, these encounter several challenges related to robustness to adversarial inputs, ecological impact, and the necessity of huge amounts of training data. In response, researchers are focusing more and more interest on biologically grounded mechanisms, which are appealing due to the impressive capabilities exhibited by biological brains. This survey explores a range of these biologically inspired models of synaptic plasticity, their application in DL scenarios, and the connections with models of plasticity in Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). Overall, Bio-Inspired Deep Learning (BIDL) represents an exciting research direction, aiming at advancing not only our current technologies but also our understanding of intelligence.

For a long time, biology and neuroscience fields have been a great source of inspiration for computer scientists, towards the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. This survey aims at providing a comprehensive review of recent biologically-inspired approaches for AI. After introducing the main principles of computation and synaptic plasticity in biological neurons, we provide a thorough presentation of Spiking Neural Network (SNN) models, and we highlight the main challenges related to SNN training, where traditional backprop-based optimization is not directly applicable. Therefore, we discuss recent bio-inspired training methods, which pose themselves as alternatives to backprop, both for traditional and spiking networks. Bio-Inspired Deep Learning (BIDL) approaches towards advancing the computational capabilities and biological plausibility of current models.

This paper explores the task of detecting images generated by text-to-image diffusion models. To evaluate this, we consider images generated from captions in the MSCOCO and Wikimedia datasets using two state-of-the-art models: Stable Diffusion and GLIDE. Our experiments show that it is possible to detect the generated images using simple Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs), starting from features extracted by CLIP, or traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). We also observe that models trained on images generated by Stable Diffusion can detect images generated by GLIDE relatively well, however, the reverse is not true. Lastly, we find that incorporating the associated textual information with the images rarely leads to significant improvement in detection results but that the type of subject depicted in the image can have a significant impact on performance. This work provides insights into the feasibility of detecting generated images, and has implications for security and privacy concerns in real-world applications. In this paper, we introduce MINTIME, a video deepfake detection approach that captures spatial and temporal anomalies and handles instances of multiple people in the same video and variations in face sizes. Previous approaches disregard such information either by using simple a-posteriori aggregation schemes, i.e., average or max operation, or using only one identity for the inference, i.e., the largest one. On the contrary, the proposed approach builds on a Spatio-Temporal TimeSformer combined with a Convolutional Neural Network backbone to capture spatio-temporal anomalies from the face sequences of multiple identities depicted in a video. This is achieved through an Identity-aware Attention mechanism that attends to each face sequence independently based on a masking operation and facilitates video-level aggregation. In addition, two novel embeddings are employed: (i) the Temporal Coherent Positional Embedding that encodes each face sequence's temporal information and (ii) the Size Embedding that encodes the size of the faces as a ratio to the video frame size. These extensions allow our system to adapt particularly well in the wild by learning how to aggregate information of multiple identities, which is usually disregarded by other methods in the literature. It achieves state-of-the-art results on the ForgeryNet dataset with an improvement of up to 14% AUC in videos containing multiple people and demonstrates ample generalization capabilities in cross-forgery and cross-dataset settings. Automatic people counting from images has recently drawn attention for urban monitoring in modern Smart Cities due to the ubiquity of surveillance camera networks. Current computer vision techniques rely on deep learning-based algorithms that estimate pedestrian densities in still, individual images. Only a bunch of works take advantage of temporal consistency in video sequences. In this work, we propose a spatio-temporal attentive neural network to estimate the number of pedestrians from surveillance videos. By taking advantage of the temporal correlation between consecutive frames, we lowered state-of-the-art count error by 5% and localization error by 7.5% on the widely-used FDST benchmark., Comment: Accepted at IEEE ISCC 2022

Learning algorithms for Deep Neural Networks are typically based on supervised end-to-end Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) training with error backpropagation (backprop). Backprop algorithms require a large number of labelled training samples to achieve high performance. However, in many realistic applications, even if there is plenty of image samples, very few of them are labelled, and semi-supervised sample-efficient training strategies have to be used. Hebbian learning represents a possible approach towards sample efficient training; however, in current solutions, it does not scale well to large datasets. In this paper, we present FastHebb, an efficient and scalable solution for Hebbian learning which achieves higher efficiency by 1) merging together update computation and aggregation over a batch of inputs, and 2) leveraging efficient matrix multiplication algorithms on GPU. We validate our approach on different computer vision benchmarks, in a semi-supervised learning scenario. FastHebb outperforms previous solutions by up to 50 times in terms of training speed, and notably, for the first time, we are able to bring Hebbian algorithms to ImageNet scale., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. Deepfake Generation Techniques are evolving at a rapid pace, making it possible to create realistic manipulated images and videos and endangering the serenity of modern society. The continual emergence of new and varied techniques brings with it a further problem to be faced, namely the ability of deepfake detection models to update themselves promptly in order to be able to identify manipulations carried out using even the most recent methods. This is an extremely complex problem to solve, as training a model requires large amounts of data, which are difficult to obtain if the deepfake generation method is too recent. Moreover, continuously retraining a network would be unfeasible. In this paper, we ask ourselves if, among the various deep learning techniques, there is one that is able to generalise the concept of deepfake to such an extent that it does not remain tied to one or more specific deepfake generation methods used in the training set. We compared a Vision Transformer with an EfficientNetV2 on a cross-forgery context based on the ForgeryNet dataset. From our experiments, It emerges that EfficientNetV2 has a greater tendency to specialize often obtaining better results on training methods while Vision Transformers exhibit a superior generalization ability that makes them more competent even on images generated with new methodologies.

Features extracted from Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have proven to be very effective in the context of Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). In recent work, biologically inspired \textit{Hebbian} learning algorithms have shown promises for DNN training. In this contribution, we study the performance of such algorithms in the development of feature extractors for CBIR tasks. Specifically, we consider a semi-supervised learning strategy in two steps: first, an unsupervised pre-training stage is performed using Hebbian learning on the image dataset; second, the network is fine-tuned using supervised Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) training. For the unsupervised pre-training stage, we explore the nonlinear Hebbian Principal Component Analysis (HPCA) learning rule. For the supervised fine-tuning stage, we assume sample efficiency scenarios, in which the amount of labeled samples is just a small fraction of the whole dataset. Reinforcement Learning (RL) has recently found wide applications in network traffic management and control because some of its variants do not require prior knowledge of network models. In this paper, we present a novel scheduler for real-time multimedia delivery in multipath systems based on an Actor-Critic (AC) RL algorithm. We focus on a challenging scenario of real-time video streaming from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) using multiple wireless paths. The scheduler acting as an RL agent learns in real-time the optimal policy for path selection, path rate allocation and redundancy estimation for flow protection. The scheduler, implemented as a module of the GStreamer framework, can be used in real or simulated settings. The simulation results show that our scheduler can target a very low loss rate at the receiver by dynamically adapting in real-time the scheduling policy to the path conditions without performing training or relying on prior knowledge of network channel models.

Modern Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) equipped with cameras can play an essential role in speeding up the identification and rescue of people who have fallen overboard, i.e., man overboard (MOB). To this end, Artificial Intelligence techniques can be leveraged for the automatic understanding of visual data acquired from drones. However, detecting people at sea in aerial imagery is challenging primarily due to the lack of specialized annotated datasets for training and testing detectors for this task. To fill this gap, we introduce and publicly release the MOBDrone benchmark, a collection of more than 125K drone-view images in a marine environment under several conditions, such as different altitudes, camera shooting angles, and illumination. We manually annotated more than 180K objects, of which about 113K man overboard, precisely localizing them with bounding boxes. Moreover, we conduct a thorough performance analysis of several state-of-the-art object detectors on the MOBDrone data, serving as baselines for further research., Comment: Accepted at ICIAP 2021

Although convolutional neural networks (CNNs) showed remarkable results in many vision tasks, they are still strained by simple yet challenging visual reasoning problems. Inspired by the recent success of the Transformer network in computer vision, in this paper, we introduce the Recurrent Vision Transformer (RViT) model. Thanks to the impact of recurrent connections and spatial attention in reasoning tasks, this network achieves competitive results on the same-different visual reasoning problems from the SVRT dataset. The weight-sharing both in spatial and depth dimensions regularizes the model, allowing it to learn using far fewer free parameters, using only 28k training samples. A comprehensive ablation study confirms the importance of a hybrid CNN + Transformer architecture and the role of the feedback connections, which iteratively refine the internal representation until a stable prediction is obtained. In the end, this study can lay the basis for a deeper understanding of the role of attention and recurrent connections for solving visual abstract reasoning tasks.

Space exploration has always been a source of inspiration for humankind, and thanks to modern telescopes, it is now possible to observe celestial bodies far away from us. With a growing number of real and imaginary images of space available on the web and exploiting modern deep Learning architectures such as Generative Adversarial Networks, it is now possible to generate new representations of space. In this research, using a Lightweight GAN, a dataset of images obtained from the web, and the Galaxy Zoo Dataset, we have generated thousands of new images of celestial bodies, galaxies, and finally, by combining them, a wide view of the universe. Deepfakes are the result of digital manipulation to forge realistic yet fake imagery. With the astonishing advances in deep generative models, fake images or videos are nowadays obtained using variational autoencoders (VAEs) or Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). These technologies are becoming more accessible and accurate, resulting in fake videos that are very difficult to be detected. Traditionally, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been used to perform video deepfake detection, with the best results obtained using methods based on EfficientNet B7. In this study, we focus on video deep fake detection on faces, given that most methods are becoming extremely accurate in the generation of realistic human faces. Specifically, we combine various types of Vision Transformers with a convolutional EfficientNet B0 used as a feature extractor, obtaining comparable results with some very recent methods that use Vision Transformers. Differently from the state-of-the-art approaches, we use neither distillation nor ensemble methods. Furthermore, we present a straightforward inference procedure based on a simple voting scheme for handling multiple faces in the same video shot. The best model achieved an AUC of 0.951 and an F1 score of 88.0%, very close to the state-of-the-art on the DeepFake Detection Challenge (DFDC).

This paper presents a communication framework built to simplify the construction of robotic ecologies, i.e., networks of heterogeneous computational nodes interfaced with sensors, actuators, and mobile robots. Building integrated ambient intelligence (AmI) solutions out of such a wide range of heterogeneous devices is a key requirement for a range of application domains, such as home automation, logistic, security and Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). This goal is challenging since these ecologies need to adapt to changing environments and especially when they include tiny embedded devices with limited computational resources. We discuss a number of requirements characterizing this type of systems and illustrate how they have been addressed in the design of the new communication framework. The most distinguishing aspect of our frameworks is the transparency with which the same communication features are offered across heterogeneous programming languages and operating systems under a consistent API. Finally, we illustrate how the framework has been used to bind together and to support the operations of all the components of adaptive robotic ecologies in two real-world test-beds.

This paper presents a novel solution to automatically count vehicles in a parking lot using images captured by smart cameras. Unlike most of the literature on this task, which focuses on the analysis of single images, this paper proposes the use of multiple visual sources to monitor a wider parking area from different perspectives. The proposed multi-camera system is capable of automatically estimate the number of cars present in the entire parking lot directly on board the edge devices. It comprises an on-device deep learning-based detector that locates and counts the vehicles from the captured images and a decentralized geometric-based approach that can analyze the inter-camera shared areas and merge the data acquired by all the devices. We conduct the experimental evaluation on an extended version of the CNRPark-EXT dataset, a collection of images taken from the parking lot on the campus of the National Research Council (CNR) in Pisa, Italy. We show that our system is robust and takes advantage of the redundant information deriving from the different cameras, improving the overall performance without requiring any extra geometrical information of the monitored scene., Comment: Submitted to Expert Systems With Applications

Cross-modal retrieval is an important functionality in modern search engines, as it increases the user experience by allowing queries and retrieved objects to pertain to different modalities. In this paper, we focus on the image-sentence retrieval task, where the objective is to efficiently find relevant images for a given sentence (image-retrieval) or the relevant sentences for a given image (sentence-retrieval). Computer vision literature reports the best results on the image-sentence matching task using deep neural networks equipped with attention and self-attention mechanisms. They evaluate the matching performance on the retrieval task by performing sequential scans of the whole dataset. This method does not scale well with an increasing amount of images or captions. In this work, we explore different preprocessing techniques to produce sparsified deep multi-modal features extracting them from state-of-the-art deep-learning architectures for image-text matching. Our main objective is to lay down the paths for efficient indexing of complex multi-modal descriptions. We use the recently introduced TERN architecture as an image-sentence features extractor. It is designed for producing fixed-size 1024-d vectors describing whole images and sentences, as well as variable-length sets of 1024-d vectors describing the various building components of the two modalities (image regions and sentence words respectively). All these vectors are enforced by the TERN design to lie into the same common space. Emotions play a central role in the social life of every human being, and their study, which represents a multidisciplinary subject, embraces a great variety of research fields. Especially concerning the latter, the analysis of facial expressions represents a very active research area due to its relevance to human-computer interaction applications. In such a context, Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is the task of recognizing expressions on human faces. Typically, face images are acquired by cameras that have, by nature, different characteristics, such as the output resolution. It has been already shown in the literature that Deep Learning models applied to face recognition experience a degradation in their performance when tested against multi-resolution scenarios. Since the FER task involves analyzing face images that can be acquired with heterogeneous sources, thus involving images with different quality, it is plausible to expect that resolution plays an important role in such a case too. Stemming from such a hypothesis, we prove the benefits of multi-resolution training for models tasked with recognizing facial expressions. Hence, we propose a two-step learning procedure, named MAFER, to train DCNNs to empower them to generate robust predictions across a wide range of resolutions. A relevant feature of MAFER is that it is task-agnostic, i.e., it can be used complementarily to other objective-related techniques. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we performed an extensive experimental campaign on publicly available datasets: \fer{}, \raf{}, and \oulu{}. For a multi-resolution context, we observe that with our approach, learning models improve upon the current SotA while reporting comparable results in fix-resolution contexts. Finally, we analyze the performance of our models and observe the higher discrimination power of deep features generated from them.

We propose to address the issue of sample efficiency, in Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN), with a semi-supervised training strategy that combines Hebbian learning with gradient descent: all internal layers (both convolutional and fully connected) are pre-trained using an unsupervised approach based on Hebbian learning, and the last fully connected layer (the classification layer) is trained using Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). In fact, as Hebbian learning is an unsupervised learning method, its potential lies in the possibility of training the internal layers of a DCNN without labels. Only the final fully connected layer has to be trained with labeled examples. We performed experiments on various object recognition datasets, in different regimes of sample efficiency, comparing our semi-supervised (Hebbian for internal layers + SGD for the final fully connected layer) approach with end-to-end supervised backprop training, and with semi-supervised learning based on Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE). Facial Expression Recognition(FER) is one of the most important topic in Human-Computer interactions(HCI). In this work we report details and experimental results about a facial expression recognition method based on state-of-the-art methods. We fine-tuned a SeNet deep learning architecture pre-trained on the well-known VGGFace2 dataset, on the AffWild2 facial expression recognition dataset. The main goal of this work is to define a baseline for a novel method we are going to propose in the near future. This paper is also required by the Affective Behavior Analysis in-the-wild (ABAW) competition in order to evaluate on the test set this approach. The results reported here are on the validation set and are related on the Expression Challenge part (seven basic emotion recognition) of the competition. We will update them as soon as the actual results on the test set will be published on the leaderboard.

Deep learning demonstrated major abilities in solving many kinds of different real-world problems in computer vision literature. However, they are still strained by simple reasoning tasks that humans consider easy to solve. In this work, we probe current state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks on a difficult set of tasks known as the same-different problems. All the problems require the same prerequisite to be solved correctly: understanding if two random shapes inside the same image are the same or not. With the experiments carried out in this work, we demonstrate that residual connections, and more generally the skip connections, seem to have only a marginal impact on the learning of the proposed problems. In particular, we experiment with DenseNets, and we examine the contribution of residual and recurrent connections in already tested architectures, ResNet-18, and CorNet-S respectively. Our experiments show that older feed-forward networks, AlexNet and VGG, are almost unable to learn the proposed problems, except in some specific scenarios. We show that recently introduced architectures can converge even in the cases where the important parts of their architecture are removed. We finally carry out some zero-shot generalization tests, and we discover that in these scenarios residual and recurrent connections can have a stronger impact on the overall test accuracy. Recent work has shown that biologically plausible Hebbian learning can be integrated with backpropagation learning (backprop), when training deep convolutional neural networks. In particular, it has been shown that Hebbian learning can be used for training the lower or the higher layers of a neural network. For instance, Hebbian learning is effective for re-training the higher layers of a pre-trained deep neural network, achieving comparable accuracy w.r.t. SGD, while requiring fewer training epochs, suggesting potential applications for transfer learning. In this paper we build on these results and we further improve Hebbian learning in these settings, by using a nonlinear Hebbian Principal Component Analysis (HPCA) learning rule, in place of the Hebbian Winner Takes All (HWTA) strategy used in previous work. We test this approach in the context of computer vision. In particular, the HPCA rule is used to train Convolutional Neural Networks in order to extract relevant features from the CIFAR-10 image dataset. Previous work has shown that it is possible to train neuronal cultures on Multi-Electrode Arrays (MEAs), to recognize very simple patterns. However, this work was mainly focused to demonstrate that it is possible to induce plasticity in cultures, rather than performing a rigorous assessment of their pattern recognition performance. In this paper, we address this gap by developing a methodology that allows us to assess the performance of neuronal cultures on a learning task. Specifically, we propose a digital model of the real cultured neuronal networks; we identify biologically plausible simulation parameters that allow us to reliably reproduce the behavior of real cultures; we use the simulated culture to perform handwritten digit recognition and rigorously evaluate its performance; we also show that it is possible to find improved simulation parameters for the specific task, which can guide the creation of real cultures., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. In this work, we propose CBiGAN -- a novel method for anomaly detection in images, where a consistency constraint is introduced as a regularization term in both the encoder and decoder of a BiGAN. Our model exhibits fairly good modeling power and reconstruction consistency capability. We evaluate the proposed method on MVTec AD -- a real-world benchmark for unsupervised anomaly detection on high-resolution images -- and compare against standard baselines and state-of-the-art approaches. Experiments show that the proposed method improves the performance of BiGAN formulations by a large margin and performs comparably to expensive state-of-the-art iterative methods while reducing the computational cost. We also observe that our model is particularly effective in texture-type anomaly detection, as it sets a new state of the art in this category. Despite the evolution of deep-learning-based visual-textual processing systems, precise multi-modal matching remains a challenging task. In this work, we tackle the task of cross-modal retrieval through image-sentence matching based on word-region alignments, using supervision only at the global image-sentence level. Specifically, we present a novel approach called Transformer Encoder Reasoning and Alignment Network (TERAN). TERAN enforces a fine-grained match between the underlying components of images and sentences, i.e., image regions and words, respectively, in order to preserve the informative richness of both modalities. TERAN obtains state-of-the-art results on the image retrieval task on both MS-COCO and Flickr30k datasets. Moreover, on MS-COCO, it also outperforms current approaches on the sentence retrieval task. Focusing on scalable cross-modal information retrieval, TERAN is designed to keep the visual and textual data pipelines well separated. Cross-attention links invalidate any chance to separately extract visual and textual features needed for the online search and the offline indexing steps in large-scale retrieval systems. In this respect, TERAN merges the information from the two domains only during the final alignment phase, immediately before the loss computation. We argue that the fine-grained alignments produced by TERAN pave the way towards the research for effective and efficient methods for large-scale cross-modal information retrieval. We compare the effectiveness of our approach against relevant state-of-the-art methods. On the MS-COCO 1K test set, we obtain an improvement of 5.7% and 3.5% respectively on the image and the sentence retrieval tasks on the Recall@1 metric. In this paper, we describe in details VISIONE, a video search system that allows users to search for videos using textual keywords, occurrence of objects and their spatial relationships, occurrence of colors and their spatial relationships, and image similarity. These modalities can be combined together to express complex queries and satisfy user needs. The peculiarity of our approach is that we encode all the information extracted from the keyframes, such as visual deep features, tags, color and object locations, using a convenient textual encoding indexed in a single text retrieval engine. This offers great flexibility when results corresponding to various parts of the query (visual, text and locations) have to be merged. In addition, we report an extensive analysis of the system retrieval performance, using the query logs generated during the Video Browser Showdown (VBS) 2019 competition. Monitoring vehicle flows in cities is crucial to improve the urban environment and quality of life of citizens. Images are the best sensing modality to perceive and assess the flow of vehicles in large areas. Current technologies for vehicle counting in images hinge on large quantities of annotated data, preventing their scalability to city-scale as new cameras are added to the system. This is a recurrent problem when dealing with physical systems and a key research area in Machine Learning and AI. Pedestrian detection through Computer Vision is a building block for a multitude of applications. Recently, there was an increasing interest in Convolutional Neural Network-based architectures for the execution of such a task. One of these supervised networks' critical goals is to generalize the knowledge learned during the training phase to new scenarios with different characteristics. A suitably labeled dataset is essential to achieve this purpose. The main problem is that manually annotating a dataset usually requires a lot of human effort, and it is costly. To this end, we introduce ViPeD (Virtual Pedestrian Dataset), a new synthetically generated set of images collected with the highly photo-realistic graphical engine of the video game GTA V - Grand Theft Auto V, where annotations are automatically acquired. However, when training solely on the synthetic dataset, the model experiences a Synthetic2Real Domain Shift leading to a performance drop when applied to real-world images. To mitigate this gap, we propose two different Domain Adaptation techniques suitable for the pedestrian detection task, but possibly applicable to general object detection. Experiments show that the network trained with ViPeD can generalize over unseen real-world scenarios better than the detector trained over real-world data, exploiting the variety of our synthetic dataset. Furthermore, we demonstrate that with our Domain Adaptation techniques, we can reduce the Synthetic2Real Domain Shift, making closer the two domains and obtaining a performance improvement when testing the network over the real-world images. Memory Based Collaborative Filtering is a widely used approach to provide recommendations. It exploits similarities between ratings across a population of users by forming a weighted vote to predict unobserved ratings. Bespoke solutions are frequently adopted to deal with the problem of high quality recommendations on large data sets. A disadvantage of this approach, however, is the loss of generality and flexibility of the general collaborative filtering systems. In this paper, we have developed a methodology that allows one to build a scalable and effective collaborative filtering system on top of a conventional full-text search engine such as Apache Lucene.

Surrogate Text Representation (STR) is a profitable solution to efficient similarity search on metric space using conventional text search engines, such as Apache Lucene. This technique is based on comparing the permutations of some reference objects in place of the original metric distance. However, the Achilles heel of STR approach is the need to reorder the result set of the search according to the metric distance. This forces to use a support database to store the original objects, which requires efficient random I/O on a fast secondary memory (such as flash-based storages). In this paper, we propose to extend the Surrogate Text Representation to specifically address a class of visual metric objects known as Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors (VLAD). This approach is based on representing the individual sub-vectors forming the VLAD vector with the STR, providing a finer representation of the vector and enabling us to get rid of the reordering phase. A new class of applications based on visual search engines are emerging, especially on smart-phones that have evolved into powerful tools for processing images and videos. The state-of-the-art algorithms for large visual content recognition and content based similarity search today use the "Bag of Features" (BoF) or "Bag of Words" (BoW) approach. The idea, borrowed from text retrieval, enables the use of inverted files. A very well known issue with this approach is that the query images, as well as the stored data, are described with thousands of words. This poses obvious efficiency problems when using inverted files to perform efficient image matching. In this paper, we propose and compare various techniques to reduce the number of words describing an image to improve efficiency and we study the effects of this reduction on effectiveness in landmark recognition and retrieval scenarios. We show that very relevant improvement in performance are achievable still preserving the advantages of the BoF base approach.

In this work, we propose an approach to index Deep Convolutional Neural Network Features to support efficient content-based retrieval on large image databases. To this aim, we have converted the these features into a textual form, to index them into an inverted index by means of Lucene. In this way, we were able to set up a robust retrieval system that combines full-text search with content-based image retrieval capabilities. We evaluated different strategies of textual representation in order to optimize the index occupation and the query response time.
