5. The doctrine of revelation in the theology of Thomas F. Torrance

Abstract

This thesis is an exposition and close reading of Torrance's doctrine of revelation and of the theological epistemology that emerges from it. In Torrance's account personal knowledge of God is available only in his self revelation in Christ. However, it is shown that his understanding of the place of the Bible and nature in theology points to them both as places of divine self-revelation. There is a gracing of all knowledge of God whether in Christ, Scripture or nature which means that God is always sovereign of his self-revelation. In his engagement with the writings of Einstein on scientific method Torrance finds a similar gracing of scientific knowledge. Chapter one demonstrates the foundational place of revelation in Christ in Torrance's theology. From this self revelation Torrance arrives at his definition of scientific method, namely the precedence of ontology over epistemology. The epistemological significance of the doctrine of justification by grace is applied to the place of the Bible in revelation (chapter two). Barth's reasons for rejecting natural theology are explored (chapter three). Chapters four and five demonstrate that the gracious aspect of knowledge of reality applies not only to theology but also to the natural sciences. The natural sciences are brought under a larger theological account of reality in which their inexplicable ability to uncover the reality of the universe is founded on the creative Word of God. Torrance is shown to have turned the natural sciences into natural theology but in a way that compromises neither the independence of the sciences from theology in their operation nor the sovereign and gracious aspect of all knowledge of God. From Torrance's doctrine of revelation there emerges a critically realist epistemology which takes account of the subjective element in all human knowing, is non-dualist, correlates with the epistemology which characterises contemporary scientific practice and unifies a wide range of disciplines including the natural sciences, the social sciences and humanities including theology.

Abstract

Although the peoples of Ice Age Europe undoubtedly considered the drawings, engravings and other imagery created during that long period of prehistory to be deeply meaningful, it is difficult for people today to discern with any degree of accuracy or reliability what those meanings may have been. Grand theories of meaning have been proposed, criticized, and in some cases rejected. The development over the last few decades of modern cognitive science presents us with another angle of approach to this difficult problem. In this dissertation I review two related cognitive science theories, Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory (Blending Theory), and ask whether they provide a basis for informed interpretations of that imagery. This inquiry presents serious epistemological obstacles. I argue that some of the underpinnings of metaphor theory, specifically the notions of primary metaphors and image schemas, utilized together with a theory of meaning based upon embodied cognition, have applicability universal enough to warrant their use in connection with this period of "deep time." They provide a means to understand some aspects of the construction of meaning in Ice Age Europe, and they offer a more sound scientific basis for interpretations of the physical experience of apprehending the imagery. I also contend that blending theory can provide a template for assessing some claims about the meanings of specific pieces of Ice Age imagery. Finally, drawing further on blending theory as well as modern work on the anthropology of culture contact situations, I apply cognitive science to claims regarding the presumed interactions between, and relative cognitive capabilities of, anatomically modern humans and Neandertals in Europe at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic.

31. Options for UK plutonium in SFR fuel cycles: Overview of current work

Abstract

The current study examines potential long-term options for stockpiled plutonium use in a UK fast reactor (FR) programme and the situations where FRs could become more advantageous than current options proposed by the NDA. This paper consists of a review of initial considerations and outlines the approach to be taken for further work. The UK has more than 90 tons of separated plutonium stockpiled due to its 1960s commitment to reprocessing. Originally intended for use in FRs, which never became economically viable, it is now labelled as a "zero value asset". Present NDA options aim to reduce the stockpile through irradiation of MOX in thermal reactors; direct disposal; or disposal following a period of storage. Recently, the UK's consideration of GE-Hitachi’s PRISM reactor for plutonium burning suggests that different uses of FRs could, in the future, become advantageous with changing political and economic circumstances. These include: reducing dependence on resources; minimising long-term radio-toxicity of waste; proliferation concerns, or a combination of these factors, which will be reviewed.

Abstract

ObjectiveTo investigate nutrition literacy among adult grocery buyers regarding energy-related labelling terms on food packaging.DesignQualitative interviews and quantitative surveys to determine shoppers’ understanding of energy terms (‘energy’, ‘calories’ and ‘kilojoules’) and how energy terms affect perceptions of healthiness and intentions to purchase breakfast cereals, muesli bars and frozen meals.SettingIndividual in-depth interviews and surveys in two metropolitan supermarkets, Sydney, Australia.SubjectsAustralian adults (interview n 40, survey n 405) aged 18–79 years.ResultsThe relationship between energy and perceived healthiness of food varied by product type: higher energy breakfast cereals were perceived to be healthier, while lower energy frozen meals were seen as healthier choices. Likewise, intentions to purchase the higher energy product varied according to product type. The primary reason stated for purchasing higher energy products was for sustained energy. Participants from households of lower socio-economic status were significantly more likely to perceive higher energy products as healthier. From the qualitative interviews, participants expressed uncertainty about their understanding of kilojoules, while only 40 % of participants in intercept surveys correctly answered that kilojoules and calories measured the same thing.ConclusionsAustralian consumers have a poor understanding of energy and kilojoules and tend to perceive higher energy products as healthier and providing sustained energy. This has implications regarding the usefulness of industry front-of-pack labelling initiatives and quick service restaurant menu labelling that provides information on energy content only. Abstract

A computer-controlled language training system was designed and constructed to enhance the objectivity and efficiency of inquiry into the language-relevant behaviors of apes. The system allows the S to gain control over the events of the 24-h day in direct correspondence with its competence in using a keyboard on which each key represents a word. Various incentives can be obtained through the selection and depression of appropriate keys in accordance with rules of sentence structure monitored by a computer. The system is flexible and allows for eventual conversation between man and ape, with the computer as the intermediary. A Teletype records all that transpires. 44. Factors associated with successful risk reduction after a community coronary risk factor screen

Abstract

Debate continues over the effectiveness of coronary risk factor screening as a strategy for the prevention of coronary heart disease in the community. We reviewed changes in risk factors one year after a community coronary risk factor screen and found highly significant reductions in the blood cholesterol (mean reduction of 0.6 mmol/1) and body mass index (mean reduction of 1.03 kg/m2) in those participants who at the initial screening were found to have elevated (> 6.5 mmol/1) blood cholesterol concentrations. Comparison of this group with a reference group not given health advice and a group of hypercholesterolaemic clinic attenders showed that the blood cholesterol reduction could not be accounted for solely by regression to the mean, and was as good as the blood cholesterol reduction achieved by regular clinic attendance. Although there were many factors that could account for these reductions, we found that participants who received risk factor measurement and counselling during the screening process and who sought medical follow‐up after the screen had a greater reduction in risk factors.
