Abstract

Coulomb excitation of the exotic neutron-rich nucleus Ne26 on a Pb208 target was measured at 58 MeV/u in order to search for low-lying E1 strength above the neutron emission threshold. This radioactive beam experiment was carried out at the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. Using the invariant mass method in the Ne25+n channel, we observe a sizable amount of E1 strength between 6 and 10 MeV excitation energy. By performing a multipole decomposition of the differential cross section, a reduced dipole transition probability of B(E1)=0.49+-0.16e2fm2 is deduced, corresponding to 4.9+-1.6% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule. For the first time, the decay pattern of low-lying strength in a neutron-rich nucleus is measured. The extracted decay pattern is not consistent with several mean-field theory descriptions of the pygmy states., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0705.1753

Abstract

First experimental evidence of the population of the first 2- state in 16C above the neutron threshold is obtained by neutron knockout from 17C on a hydrogen target. The invariant mass method combined with in-beam gamma-ray detection is used to locate the state at 5.45(1) MeV. Comparison of its populating cross section and parallel momentum distribution with a Glauber model calculation utilizing the shell-model spectroscopic factor confirms the core-neutron removal nature of this state. Additionally, a previously known unbound state at 6.11 MeV and a new state at 6.28(2) MeV are observed. The position of the first 2- state, which belongs to a member of the lowest-lying p-sd cross shell transition, is reasonably well described by the shell-model calculation using the WBT interaction., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

A Gamow-Teller (GT) transition from the drip-line nucleus 14Be to 14B was studied via the (p,n) reaction in inverse kinematics using a secondary 14Be beam at 69 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method is employed to reconstruct the energy spectrum. A peak is observed at an excitation energy of 1.27(2) MeV in 14B, together with bumps at 2.08 and 4.06(5) MeV. The observed forward peaking of the state at 1.27 MeV and a good description for the differential cross section, obtained with a DWBA calculation provide support for the 1+ assignment to this state. By extrapolating the cross section to zero momentum transfer the GT-transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare well with that reported in a beta-delayed neutron emission study., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The neturon rich nucleus 13B was studied via the proton transfer reaction 4He(12Be,13B \gamma) at 50AMeV. The known 4.83-MeV excited state was strongly populated and its spin and parity were assigned to 1/2+ by comparing the angular differential cross section data with DWBA calculations. This low-lying 1/2+ state is interpreted as a proton intruder state and indicates a deformation of the nucleus., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The neutron-rich carbon isotopes 19,17C have been investigated via proton inelastic scattering on a liquid hydrogen target at 70 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics was employed to reconstruct the energy spectrum, in which fast neutrons and charged fragments were detected in coincidence using a neutron hodoscope and a dipole magnet system. A peak has been observed with an excitation energy of 1.46(10) MeV in 19C, while three peaks with energies of 2.20(3), 3.05(3), and 6.13(9) MeV have been observed in 17C. Deduced cross sections are compared with microscopic DWBA calculations based on p-sd shell model wave functions and modern nucleon-nucleus optical potentials. Abstract

Coulomb excitation of the exotic neutron-rich nucleus $^{26}$Ne on a $^{nat}$Pb target was measured at 58 A.MeV in order to search for low-lying E1 strength above the neutron emission threshold. Data were also taken on an $^{nat}$Al target to estimate the nuclear contribution. The radioactive beam was produced by fragmentation of a 95 A.MeV $^{40}$Ar beam delivered by the RIKEN Research Facility. The set-up included a NaI gamma-ray array, a charged fragment hodoscope and a neutron wall. Using the invariant mass method in the $^{25}$Ne+n channel, we observe a sizable amount of E1 strength between 6 and 10 MeV. The reconstructed $^{26}$Ne angular distribution confirms its E1 nature. A reduced dipole transition probability of B(E1)=0.49$\pm$0.16 $e^2fm^2$ is deduced. For the first time, the decay pattern of low-lying strength in a neutron-rich nucleus is obtained. The results are discussed in terms of a pygmy resonance centered around 9 MeV.

Abstract

The electric quadrupole transition from the first 2+ state to the ground 0+ state in 16C is studied through measurement of the lifetime by a recoil shadow method applied to inelastically scattered radioactive 16C nuclei. The measured lifetime is 75 +- 23 ps, corresponding to a B(E2;2_1+ -> 0^+) value of 0.63 +- 0.19 e2fm4, or 0.26 +- 0.08 Weisskopf units. 19. Characteristics of landslides in unwelded pyroclastic flow deposits, southern Kyushu, Japan

Abstract

We investigated 184 landslides that occurred in unwelded pyroclastic flow deposits (Shirasu) on southern Kyushu Island, Japan, that included detailed data on the rainfall characteristics and the timing of slope failure. Localized rainfall intensity, antecedent precipitation index (API), and topography affected the hydrologic processes that triggered landslides. API (adjusted for evapotranspiration losses) for large (>200 mm) storms that triggered landslides was much lower than for smaller (≤200 mm) storms. Mean storm intensity and 7-day API (API7) thresholds of >5mmh-1 and ≤30mm (or API30 ≤60 mm), respectively, were useful to identify landslides triggered by rapid pore water pressure response, especially for shorter (< 20 h) duration events. During smaller storms with lower intensity, landslides are likely affected by a combined increase in soil weight and loss of suction when API30 ≥ 150 mm; simulations indicated that these weight and suction changes due to rainfall accumulation decreased the factor of safety in steep Shirasu slopes, but did not necessarily trigger the landslides. Most of the landslides that were plotted below a general rainfall intensity-duration threshold for landslide initiation occurred during smaller storms with API30 values > 200 mm, indicating that they were highly influenced by the combined effects of the accumulated weight of rainfall and loss of suction. Our findings show that both event rainfall characteristics and API affect the hydrogeomorphic processes that trigger different types of landslides in Shirasu. This knowledge and the thresholds we have identified are useful for predicting the occurrence of different types of landslides in unwelded Shirasu deposits and improving sediment disaster prevention practices, including real-time warning systems.

28. Structures Linking Physical and Biological Processes in Headwater Streams of the Maybeso Watershed, Southeast Alaska

Abstract

We focus on headwater streams originating in the mountainous terrain of northern temperate rain forests. These streams rapidly descend from gradients greater than 20% to less than 5% in U-shaped glacial valleys. We use a set of studies on headwater streams in southeast Alaska to define headwater stream catchments, link physical and biological processes, and describe their significance within watersheds. We separate headwater stream systems into four units that have distinct hydrologic and geomorphic processes that link terrestrial processes to aquatic systems. Headwater streams collect, process, and transport material downstream. Physical and biological processes in headwater streams are complex and closely tied to terrestrial processes. Steps and step pools formed by large wood are keystone structures that link physical processes to biological processes and increase channel complexity. Large and coarse wood debris dams form in-channel step structures and act as valves that regulate the downstream flow of material. A large amount of inorganic and organic sediment is stored in step structures, which may be biological hotspots in headwater streams. Step pools formed by large woody debris are critical habitat for Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), steelhead (0. mykiss), and cutthroat trout (0. clarkii) in reaches with gradients from less than 4% to those greater than 10%. Landslides and debris flows are the dominant channel-altering processes in headwater streams and remove the step profile. Management activities that increase the number and frequency of channel disturbance events in headwater streams can have important and long-term consequences throughout a watershed

30. Headwater Streams in Southeast Alaska: Why Do We Care?

Abstract

Headwater streams may comprise more than 70% of the area of a watershed and until recently, they have been largely over-looked by managers and ecologists in Southeast Alaska and elsewhere. However, their importance in shaping downstream processes is becoming more widely recognized. Recently, a series of studies were completed in Southeast Alaska that examined the physical and biological features of headwater streams. We review and synthesize these studies to define headwater stream characteristics in Southeast Alaska, describe some processes that occur in these streams, and discuss their importance to watersheds. Alterations in large wood abundance and distribution have predictable effects on sediment storage and transport in headwater streams. Legacy wood remaining in streams more than 25 yrs after logging was an important structural component. Invertebrate populations captured in drift samples are diverse, and more than 60 % of the taxa were aquatic. Downstream transport of invertebrate drift from reaches without fish may be an important to juvenile fish residing in the lower reaches. Drift density is inversely related to stream discharge, so small streams may provide better foraging and growth potential. Resident and anadromous fish live and spawn in headwater reaches with gradients > 10 % and occupied small step pools formed by large woody debris. Dolly Varden were the dominant species in higher gradient reaches, but juvenile coho were also present. Steelhead were seasonal residents. Headwater streams link hill slope processes to watersheds and can have important consequences for salmonid populations throughout a watershed

Abstract

Rationale and Objectives: To compare the effectiveness of chest dual-energy subtraction digital tomosynthesis (DES-DT) imaging with that of DES radiography for detecting simulated pulmonary nodules with and without calcifications. Materials and Methods: A DES-DT and DES radiography system (SonialVision Safire II, Shimadzu Co, Kyoto, Japan) with pulsed x-rays and rapid kV switching was used to detect simulated pulmonary nodules (5 and 7 mmφ, ground-glass opacity). Low-voltage (60 kVp), high-voltage (120 kVp), and soft-tissue or bone-subtracted tomograms of the desired layer thicknesses were reconstructed from the image data acquired during a single tomographic scan using a three-dimensional filtered back-projection algorithm, bone- and soft tissue‑subtracted images, and a scan angle of 40°. In the analysis, we considered the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) computed for various sizes and degree of calcification of the simulated pulmonary nodules. We examined 30 samples with and 30 samples without different degrees of simulated pulmonary nodules by both DES radiography and DES-DT imaging. Based on the evaluations of five thoracic radiologists, receiver operating characteristic curves were compared to assess the detection accuracy of the two methods. Results: SNR and quality of images obtained by DES-DT imaging were significantly superior to those obtained by DES radiography. Based on the results of the ROC analysis, the detection accuracy of DES-DT was significantly greater than that of DES radiography (7 mmφ without calcification P < .03; with calcification P < .003). Conclusion: DES-DT imaging exhibited greater sensitivity than DES radiography for detecting simulated nodules, especially large nodules, with and without calcifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. An experimental comparison of flat-panel detector performance for direct and indirect systems (initial experiences and physical evaluation)

Abstract

The purpose of this work was to compare direct and indirect detectors in terms of their system linearity, presampled modulation transfer function (MTF), Wiener spectrum (WS), noise equivalent quanta (NEQ), and power spectrum. Measurements were made on two flat-panel detectors, GE Revolution XR/d (indirect) and Shimadzu Safire (direct) radiographic techniques. The system linearity of the systems was measured using a time-scale method. The MTF of the systems was measured using an edge method. The WS of the systems was determined for a variable range of exposure levels by two-dimensional Fourier analysis. The NEQ was assessed from the measured MTF, WS, and estimated ideal signal-to-noise ratios. Power spectrum analyzed the chest phantom within artificial lesions. System linearity was excellent for the direct systems. For the direct system, the MTF was found to be significantly higher than that for the indirect systems. For the direct system, the WS was relatively uniform across all frequencies. In comparison, the indirect system exhibited a drop in the WS at high frequencies. At lower frequencies, the NEQ for the indirect system was noticeably higher than for the direct system. Power spectrum for the direct system was relatively flat and similar to that for white noise. The indirect system exhibited significant reduction at high spatial frequencies. In general, the direct systems exhibit improved image quality over indirect systems at comparable exposure dose. Abstract

Liver cirrhosis, which is associated with decreased plasma and hepatic glutathione (GSH), has been reported to cause the suppression of NK activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Since low GSH levels in lymphocytes are known to alter lymphocyte function, we examined the correlation between intracellular GSH levels and the cytotoxic activity of liver-associated mononuclear cells (liver MNC). We show here that rat liver contains a highly active population of NK cells (CD3- NKR-P1+ cells) that kill Yac-1 in vitro and that the cytotoxic activity of this NK population is directly proportional to liver MNC GSH. This proportionality is independent of the methods used to alter GSH level. Thus, in vitro treatment of liver MNC with buthionine sulfoximine to lower GSH levels lowers the cytotoxic activity. MNC from cirrhotic liver, in which implanted tumor cells grow faster, have both low GSH levels and low cytotoxicity, and supplementation of cirrhotic liver MNC with N-acetylcysteine raises GSH levels and increases cytotoxicity. These findings suggest a physiologic mechanism, i.e. decreased GSH, may be causally associated with the increased incidence of hepatoma in cirrhotic individuals and the increased growth of hepatoma cells in cirrhotic animals. 50. Enzymatic properties of dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV produced by the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis and its participation in virulence.

Abstract

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a major pathogen associated with adult periodontitis. We cloned and sequenced the gene (dpp) coding for dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV (DPPIV) from P. gingivalis W83, based on the amino acid sequences of peptide fragments derived from purified DPPIV. An Escherichia coli strain overproducing P. gingivalis DPPIV was constructed. The enzymatic properties of recombinant DPPIV purified from the overproducer were similar to those of DPPIV isolated from P. gingivalis. The three amino acid residues Ser, Asp, and His, which are thought to form a catalytic triad in the C-terminal catalytic domain of eukaryotic DPPIV, are conserved in P. gingivalis DPPIV. When each of the corresponding residues of the enzyme was substituted with Ala by site-directed mutagenesis, DPPIV activity significantly decreased, suggesting that these three residues of P. gingivalis DPPIV are involved in the catalytic reaction. DPPIV-deficient mutants of P. gingivalis were constructed and subjected to animal experiments. Mice injected with the wild-type strain developed abscesses to a greater extent and died more frequently than those challenged with mutant strains. Mice injected with the mutants exhibited faster recovery from the infection, as assessed by weight gain and the rate of lesion healing. This decreased virulence of mutants compared with the parent strain suggests that DPPIV is a potential virulence factor of P. gingivalis and may play important roles in the pathogenesis of adult periodontitis induced by the organism.
