We present simultaneous Chandra X-ray Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope observations of three certain (X5, X7, W37) and two likely (X4, W17) quiescent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries (qLMXBs) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc. We study these systems in the X-ray, optical and near-ultraviolet (NUV) using the simultaneous data and additional non-contemporaneous HST data. We have discovered a blue and variable NUV counterpart to W17. We have not securely identified the eclipsing qLMXB W37 in the optical or NUV. Deeper high-resolution imaging is needed to further investigate the faint NUV excess near the centre of the W37 error circle. We suggest that a previously identified optical astrometric match to X7 is likely the true counterpart. The Halpha emission and the location of the counterpart in the colour-magnitude diagram, indicate that the secondary is probably a non-degenerate, H-rich star. This is consistent with previous results from fitting X7's X-ray spectrum. In X4, the simultaneous X-ray and optical behaviour supports the earlier suggestion that the X-ray variability is driven by changes in accretion rate. The X-ray eclipses in X5 coincide with minima in the optical/NUV light curves. Comparison of the 47 Tuc qLMXBs with the cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the cluster confirms that overall the qLMXBs have larger X-ray-to-optical flux ratios. Based on their optical/NUV colors, we conclude that the accretion disks in the qLMXBs are less prominent than in CVs. This makes the ratio of X-ray flux to excess blue optical flux a powerful discriminator between CVs and qLMXBs., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

HEX-P is a probe-class mission concept that will combine high spatial resolution X-ray imaging ($<10"$ FWHM) and broad spectral coverage (0.2-80 keV) with an effective area far superior to current facilities' (including XMM-Newton and NuSTAR). These capabilities will enable revolutionary new insights into a variety of important astrophysical problems. We present scientific objectives and simulations of HEX-P observations of the Galactic Center (GC) and Bulge. We demonstrate the unique and powerful capabilities of the HEX-P observatory for studying both X-ray point sources and diffuse X-ray emission. HEX-P will be uniquely equipped to explore a variety of major topics in Galactic astrophysics, allowing us to (1) investigate broad-band properties of X-ray flares emitted from the supermassive black hole (BH) at Sgr A* and probe the associated particle acceleration and emission mechanisms; (2) identify hard X-ray sources detected by NuSTAR and determine X-ray point source populations in different regions and luminosity ranges; (3) determine the distribution of compact object binaries in the nuclear star cluster and the composition of the Galactic Ridge X-ray emission; (4) identify X-ray transients and measure fundamental parameters such as BH spin; (5) find hidden pulsars in the GC; (6) search for BH-OB binaries and hard X-ray flares from young stellar objects in young massive clusters; (7) measure white dwarf (WD) masses of magnetic CVs to deepen our understanding of CV evolution and the origin of WD magnetic fields; (8) explore primary particle accelerators in the GC in synergy with future TeV and neutrino observatories; (9) map out cosmic-ray distributions by observing non-thermal X-ray filaments; (10) explore past X-ray outbursts from Sgr A* through X-ray reflection components from giant molecular clouds.

Detector commanding, processing and readout of spaceborne instrumentation is often accomplished with Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). The ASIC designed for the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission (NuASIC) enables future tiled CdZnTe (CZT) detector array readout for x-ray detectors such as the High Resolution Energetic X-ray Imager (HREXI). Modified NuASIC gain settings have been implemented for HREXI's broader targeted imaging energy range (3-300 keV) compared to NuSTAR (2-79 keV), which may require updated NuASIC internal parameters for optimal energy resolution. To reach HREXI's targeted low energy threshold, we have also enabled the NuASIC's "Charge Pump Mode" (CPM), which introduces an additional tuning parameter. In this paper, we describe the mechanics of the NuASIC's adjustable parameters and use our recently developed ASIC Test Stand (ATS) to probe a "bare" NuASIC using its internal test pulser. We record the effects of parameter tuning on the device's electronics noise and low energy threshold and report the optimal set of parameters for HREXI's updated gain setting. We detail a semi-automated procedure to derive the optimal parameters for each of HREXI's large area, closely tiled NuASIC/CZT detectors to expedite instrument integration., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, published in JATIS

We report a broad-band analysis of a Galactic X-ray source, CXOGBS J174517.0-321356 (J1745), with a 614-second periodicity. Chandra discovered the source in the direction of the Galactic Bulge. Gong (2022) proposed J1745 was either an intermediate polar (IP) with a mass of ~1 $M_{\odot}$, or an ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB). By jointly fitting XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectra, we rule out a UCXB origin. We have developed a physically realistic model that considers finite magnetosphere radius, X-ray absorption from the pre-shock region, and reflection from the WD surface to determine the IP properties, especially its WD mass. To assess systematic errors on WD mass measurement, we consider a broad range of specific accretion rates ($\dot{m}$ = 0.6 - 44 g\cm$^2$\s) based on the uncertain source distance (d = 3-8 kpc) and fractional accretion area (f = 0.001-0.025). Our model properly implements the fitted accretion column height in the X-ray reflection model and accounts for the underestimated mass accretion rate due to the (unobserved) soft X-ray blackbody and cyclotron cooling emissions. We found that the lowest accretion rate of $\dot{m}$ = 0.6 g\cm$^2$\s, which corresponds to the nearest source distance and maximum f value, yield the WD mass of $(0.92\pm0.08) M_{\odot}$. However, if the accretion rate is $\dot{m}$ > ~3 g\cm$^2$\s, the WD mass is robustly measured to be $(0.81\pm0.06) M_{\odot}$, nearly independent of $\dot{m}$. The derived WD mass range is consistent with the mean WD mass of nearby IPs. Assuming spin equilibrium between the WD and accretion disk, we constrained the WD magnetic field to B > ~7 MG, indicating that it could be a highly magnetized IP. Stellar-mass black holes (BHs), with masses comparable to stars, are a major constituent of our Milky Way galaxy. This chapter describes the landscape of challenging, and long-sought efforts to identify these objects in the Galaxy. The first stellar-mass BHs were identified as persistent, but highly variable cosmic X-ray sources. Later, transient BH candidates were detected, and now far outnumber the persistent sources. Decades of effort have also yielded candidate BHs via gravitational microlensing and their orbital effect on binary companions. Populations of BH systems have begun to emerge from these detection strategies, offering insight into the astrophysical context in which BHs exist and driving questions about the formation, assembly, and ongoing evolution of these enigmatic objects., Comment: This chapter is the pre-print of the version currently in production. ProtoEXIST2 (P2) was a prototype imaging X-ray detector plane developed for wide-field Time Domain Astrophysics (TDA) in the 5 - 200 keV energy band. It was composed of an 8 $\times$ 8 array of 5 mm thick, 2cm $\times$ 2cm pixelated (32 $\times$ 32) CdZnTe (CZT) detectors with a 0.6 mm pitch that utilize the NuSTAR ASIC(NuASIC) for readout. During the initial detector development process leading up to post-flight examination of the entire detector plane, distortions in expected pixel positions and shapes were observed in a significant fraction of the detectors. The HREXI (High Resolution Energetic X-ray Imager) Calibration Facility (HCF) was designed and commissioned to improve upon these early experiments and to rapidly map out and characterize pixel non-uniformities and defects within CZT detector planes at resolutions down to 50 $\rm \mu$m. Using this facility, the sub-pixel level detector response of P2 was measured at 100 $\rm \mu$m resolution and analyzed to extract and evaluate the area and profile of individual pixels, their morphology across the entire P2 detector plane for comparison with previous measurements and to provide additional characterization. In this article, we evaluate the imaging performance of a coded-aperture telescope using the observed pixel morphology for P2 detectors. This investigation will serve as an initial guide for detector selection in the development of HREXI detector planes, for the future implementation of the 4pi X-Ray Imaging Observatory (4piXIO) mission which aims to provide simultaneous and continuous imaging of the full sky ($\rm 4\pi$ sr) in the 3-200 keV energy band with $\rm \simeq$ 2 arcmin angular resolution and $\simeq$ 10 arcsec source localization, as well as other, future coded-aperture instruments.

We report on optical observations and modeling of HD96670, a single-line spectroscopic binary in the Carina OB2 association. We collected 10 epochs of optical spectroscopy, and optical photometry on 17 non-consecutive nights on the source. We construct a radial velocity curve from the spectra, and update the orbital period of the binary to be $P = 5.28388 \pm 0.00046$ days. The spectra show oxygen and helium absorption, consistent with an O-type primary. We see no evidence for spectral lines from the secondary star in the binary. We model the optical light curve and radial velocity curve simultaneously using the Wilson-Devinney code and find a best fit mass of $M_1 = 22.7^{+5.2}_{-3.6} M_\odot$ for the primary, and $M_2 = 6.2^{+0.9}_{-0.7} M_\odot$ for the secondary. An object of this mass is consistent with either a B-type star, or a black hole. Given that we see no absorption lines from the secondary, in combination with an observed hard power-law X-ray spectrum with $\Gamma = 2.6$ detected past 10 keV, maybe produced by wind accretion onto the secondary, we conclude that the secondary is most likely a black hole. We see asymmetrical helium lines with a shape consistent with the presence of a third star. If the secondary is indeed a black hole, this system would add to the small sample of only four possible black hole high mass X-ray binaries in the galaxy., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figured, Accepted to ApJ May 2021

In this paper, we review some of the extant literature on the study of interstellar objects (ISOs). With the forthcoming Vera C. Rubin Telescope and Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), we find that $0.38 - 84$ `Oumuamua-like interstellar objects are expected to be detected in the next 10 years, with 95\% confidence. The feasibility of a rendezvous trajectory has been demonstrated in previous work. In this paper, we investigate the requirements for a rendezvous mission with the primary objective of producing a resolved image of an interstellar object. We outline the rendezvous distances necessary as a function of resolution elements and object size. We expand upon current population synthesis models to account for the size dependency on the detection rates for reachable interstellar objects. We assess the trade-off between object diameter and occurrence rate, and conclude that objects with the size range between a third of the size and the size of `Oumuamua will be optimal targets for an imaging rendezvous. In 2018, we reported our discovery of a dozen quiescent X-ray binaries in the central parsec (pc) of the Galaxy (Hailey et al. 2018). In a recent follow-up paper (Mori et al. 2021), we published an extended analysis of these sources and other X-ray binaries (XRBs) in the central pc and beyond, showing that most if not all of the 12 non-thermal sources are likely black hole low-mass X-ray binary (BH-LMXB) candidates. In response, Maccarone et al. 2022 (TM22 hereafter) argued, primarily on the claim that neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs) often do not have short outburst recurrence times (<~ 10 yr), that they cannot be excluded as a designation for the 12 quiescent X-ray binary sources. TM22 cites three main factors in their study: (1) X-ray outburst data of NS transients detected by RXTE and MAXI, (2) the Galactic population of NS-LMXBs, and (3) (persistently) quiescent NS-LMXBs in globular clusters. We address these arguments of TM22 and correct their misunderstandings of our work and the literature, even though most of these points have already been thoroughly addressed by Mori et al. 2021. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are used in space-borne instruments for signal processing and detector readout. The electrical interface of these ASICs to frontend printed circuit boards (PCBs) is commonly accomplished with wire bonds. Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology has been proposed as an alternative interconnect technique that will reduce assembly complexity of ASIC packaging by replacing wire bonding with flip-chip bonding. TSV technology is advantageous in large detector arrays where TSVs enable close detector tiling on all sides. Wafer-level probe card testing of TSV ASICs is frustrated by solder balls introduced onto the ASIC surface for flip-chip bonding that hamper alignment. Therefore, we developed the ASIC Test Stand (ATS) to enable rapid screening and characterization of individual ASIC die. We successfully demonstrated ATS operation on ASICs originally developed for CdZnTe detectors on the Nuclear Spectroscopic and Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission that were later modified with TSVs in a via-last process. We tested both back-side blind-TSVs and front-side through-TSVs, with results from internal test pulser measurements that demonstrate performance equal to or exceeding the probe card wafer-level testing data. The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 has opened the era of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. Rapid identification of the optical/infrared kilonova enabled a precise localization of the source, which paved the way to deep multi-wavelength follow-up and its myriad of related science results. Fully exploiting this new territory of exploration requires the acquisition of electromagnetic data from samples of neutron star mergers and other gravitational wave sources. After GW170817, the frontier is now to map the diversity of kilonova properties and provide more stringent constraints on the Hubble constant, and enable new tests of fundamental physics. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) can play a key role in this field in the 2020s, when an improved network of gravitational-wave detectors is expected to reach a sensitivity that will enable the discovery of a high rate of merger events involving neutron stars (about tens per year) out to distances of several hundred Mpc. The REgolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) instrument on board NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission to the asteroid Bennu is a Class-D student collaboration experiment designed to detect fluoresced X-rays from the asteroid's surface to measure elemental abundances. In July and November 2019 REXIS collected ~615 hours of integrated exposure time of Bennu's sun-illuminated surface from terminator orbits. As reported in Hoak et al. (2021), the REXIS data do not contain a clear signal of X-ray fluorescence from the asteroid, in part due to the low incident solar X-ray flux during periods of observation. To support the evaluation of the upper limits on the detectable X-ray signal that may provide insights for the properties of Bennu's regolith, we present an overview of the REXIS instrument, its operation, and details of its in-flight calibration on astrophysical X-ray sources. This calibration includes the serendipitous detection of the transient X-ray binary MAXI J0637-430 during Bennu observations, demonstrating the operational success of REXIS at the asteroid. We present an investigation of the quiescent and transient X-ray binaries (XRBs) of the Galactic Center (GC). We extended our Chandra analysis of the non-thermal X-ray sources, located in the central parsec, from Hailey et al. (2018), using an additional 4.6 Msec of ACIS-S data obtained in 2012-2018. The individual Chandra spectra of the 12 sources fit to an absorbed power-law model with a mean photon index $\Gamma$~2 and show no Fe emission lines. Long-term variability was detected from nine of them, confirming that a majority are quiescent XRBs. Frequent X-ray monitoring of the GC revealed that the 12 non-thermal X-ray sources, as well as four X-ray transients have shown at most a single outburst over the last two decades. They are distinct from the six known neutron star LMXBs in the GC, which have all undergone multiple outbursts with <~ 5 year recurrence time on average. Based on the outburst history data of the broader population of X-ray transients, we conclude that the 16 sources represent a population of ~240-630 tightly-bound BH-LMXBs with ~4-12 hour orbital periods, consistent with the stellar/binary dynamics modelling in the vicinity of Sgr A*. The distribution of the 16 BH-LMXB candidates is disk-like (at 87% CL) and aligned with the nuclear star cluster. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are commonly used to efficiently process the signals from sensors and detectors in space. Wire bonding is a space qualified technique of making interconnections between ASICs and their substrate packaging board for power, control and readout of the ASICs. Wire bonding is nearly ubiquitous in modern space programs, but their exposed wires can be prone to damage during assembly and subject to electric interference during operations. Additional space around the ASICs needed for wire bonding also impedes efficient packaging of large arrays of detectors. Here we introduce the Through Silicon Vias (TSV) technology that replaces wire bonds and eliminates their shortcomings. We have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of implementing TSVs to existing ASIC wafers (a.k.a. a via-last process) developed for processing the X-ray signals from the X-ray imaging CdZnTe detectors on the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) Small Explorer mission that was launched in 2012. While TSVs are common in the semiconductor industry, this is the first (to our knowledge) successful application for Astrophysics imaging instrumentation. The High Resolution Energetic X-Ray Imager (HREXI) CZT detector development program at Harvard is aimed at developing tiled arrays of finely pixelated CZT detectors for use in wide-field coded aperture 3-200 keV X-ray telescopes. A pixel size of $\simeq$ 600 $\mu m$ has already been achieved in the ProtoEXIST2 (P2) detector plane with CZT read out by the NuSTAR ASIC. This paves the way for even smaller 300 $\mu m$ pixels in the next generation HREXI detectors. This article describes a new HREXI calibration facility (HCF) which enables a high resolution sub-pixel level (100 $\mu m$) 2D scan of a 256 $cm^2$ tiled array of 2 $\times$ 2 cm CZT detectors illuminated by a bright X-ray AmpTek Mini-X tube source at timescales of around a day. HCF is a significant improvement from the previous apparatus used for scanning these detectors which took $\simeq$ 3 weeks to complete a 1D scan of a similar detector plane. Moreover, HCF has the capability to scan a large tiled array of CZT detectors ($32cm \times 32cm$) at 100 $\mu m$ resolution in the 10 - 50 keV energy range which was not possible previously. Astrophysics spans an enormous range of questions on scales from individual planets to the entire cosmos. To address the richness of 21st century astrophysics requires a corresponding richness of telescopes spanning all bands and all messengers. Much scientific benefit comes from having the multi-wavelength capability available at the same time. Most of these bands,or measurement sensitivities, require space-based missions. Historically, NASA has addressed this need for breadth with a small number of flagship-class missions and a larger number of Explorer missions. While the Explorer program continues to flourish, there is a large gap between Explorers and strategic missions. A fortunate combination of new astrophysics technologies with new, high capacity, low dollar-per-kg to orbit launchers, and new satellite buses allow for cheaper missions with capabilities approaching strategic mission levels. NASA has recognized these developments by calling for Probe-class mission ideas for mission studies, spanning most of the electromagnetic spectrum from GeV gamma-rays to the far infrared, and the new messengers of neutrinos and ultra-high energy cosmic rays. We report NuSTAR and Chandra observations of two X-ray transients, SWIFT J174540.7$-$290015 (T15) and SWIFT J174540.2$-$290037 (T37), which were discovered by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in 2016 within $r\sim1$ pc of Sgr A*. NuSTAR detected bright X-ray outbursts from T15 and T37, likely in the soft and hard states, with 3-79~keV luminosities of $8\times10^{36}$ and $3\times10^{37}$ erg/s, respectively. No X-ray outbursts have previously been detected from the two transients and our Chandra ACIS analysis puts an upper limit of $L_X \lesssim 2 \times10^{31}$ erg/s on their quiescent 2-8 keV luminosities. No pulsations, significant QPOs, or type I X-ray bursts were detected in the NuSTAR data. While T15 exhibited no significant red noise, the T37 power density spectra are well characterized by three Lorentzian components. The declining variability of T37 above $\nu \sim 10$ Hz is typical of black hole (BH) transients in the hard state. NuSTAR spectra of both transients exhibit a thermal disk blackbody, X-ray reflection with broadened Fe atomic features, and a continuum component well described by Comptonization models. Their X-ray reflection spectra are most consistent with high BH spin ($a_{*} \gtrsim 0.9$) and large disk density ($n_e\sim10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$). Based on the best-fit ionization parameters and disk densities, we found that X-ray reflection occurred near the inner disk radius, which was derived from the relativistic broadening and thermal disk component. These X-ray characteristics suggest the outbursting BH-LMXB scenario for both transients and yield the first BH spin measurements from X-ray transients in the central 100 pc region., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Characteristic variability timescales in blazar gamma-ray light curves can provide insight into the physical processes responsible for the gamma-ray variability. The power spectral density (PSD) is capable of revealing such timescales, which may appear as breaks or periodicities. Continuous-time autoregressive moving-average (CARMA) models can be used to accurately estimate a light curve's PSD. Through a lightcurve simulation study, we develop a methodology to identify PSD breaks using CARMA models. Using this methodology, we study the gamma-ray light curves of 13 bright blazars observed with the Fermi Large Area Telescope in the 0.1-300 GeV band over 9.5 years. We present the blazar gamma-ray PSDs, which provide evidence for low-frequency breaks on timescales ~1 year in four sources, and an additional high-frequency break on a timescale ~9 days in one source.

We revisit the K -band period-luminosity (P-L) relations of Galactic red supergiants using Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes and up to 70 yr of photometry from AAVSO and ASAS campaigns. In addition, we examine 206 LMC red supergiants using 50 yr of photometric data from the Digitised Harvard Astronomical Plate Collection. We identified periods by computing power spectra and calculated the period-luminosity relations of our samples and compared them with the literature. Newly available data tighten the P-L relations substantially. Identified periods form two groups: one with periods of 300-1000 days, corresponding to pulsations, and another with Long Secondary Periods between 1000 and 8000 days. Among the 48 Galactic objects we find shorter periods in 25 stars and long secondary periods in 23 stars. In the LMC sample we identify 85 and 94 red supergiants with shorter and long secondary periods, respectively. The P-L relation of the Galactic red supergiants is in agreement with the red supergiants in both, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Andromeda Galaxy. We and no clear continuity between the known red giant period-luminosity sequences, and the red supergiant sequences investigated here., Comment: Resubmitted with the supplementary material. AX J1949.8+2534 is a candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) observed in outburst by INTEGRAL (IGR J19498+2534). We report on the results of six Neil Gehrels Swift-XRT, one Chandra, and one NuSTAR observation of the source. We find evidence of rapid X-ray variability on a few ks timescales. Fortunately, Chandra observed the source in a relatively bright state, allowing us to confidently identify the optical/NIR counterpart of the source. We also obtained an optical spectrum of this counterpart, which shows an H$\alpha$ emission line and He I absorption features. The photometry and spectrum of the source allow us to constrain its distance, $\sim7-8$ kpc, and reddening, $A_V=8.5-9.5$. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous known electromagnetic radiation sources in the Universe for the 3 to 300 sec of their prompt flashes (isotropic X/ gamma-ray luminosities up to 10^53 ergs/sec). Their afterglows have first day rest-frame UV/optical absolute magnitudes AB = -30 to -23. This luminous continuum nUV-nIR back-light provides the ultimate probe of the SFR(z) back to the first Pop III to II.5 stars, expected to be massive and GRB progenitors. GRB afterglow spectra in the first 1 to 3 hours will directly measure their host galaxy ionization fraction x_i vs. z in the Epoch of Reionization (EOR), tracing the growth of structure. Only 28% of Swift GRBs have measured redshifts due to limited followup at R, J >21. Some ~25% of GRBs are optically dark due to dust absorption in their host galaxies, but those with low NH in their X-ray spectra are likely at z >7. Current 8-10m telescopes and coming ELTs cannot pursue optically dark GRBs promptly, nor can JWST or WFIRST slew within 0.5 to 1 days of a GRB. The Time-domain Spectroscopic Observatory (TSO) is a proposed Probe-class 1.3m telescope at L2, with imaging and spectroscopy (R = 200, 1800) in 4 bands (0.3 to 5um) and rapid slew capability to 90% of sky. Time-domain Astrophysics (TDA), a foundation of Astronomy, has become a major part of current and projected (2020s) astrophysics. While much has been derived from temporal measures of flux and color, the real physics comes from spectroscopy. With LSST coming on line in 2022, with TDA as one of its original drivers, the deluge of Transients and new types of variables will be truly astronomical. With multi-wavelength targeted EM surveys and multi-messenger (e.g. LIGO-international and advanced ICECUBE), and the possibility of full-sky and full-time X-ray imagers, the discovery of new Transients and Variables will flood telescopes on the ground and in space, and this just for multi-band imaging without spectroscopy. In this White Paper we briefly summarize several long-standing major science objectives that can be realized with TDA imaging and spectroscopy (near UV to mid IR) from space. With the epochal first detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star (NS) merger with the GW170817 event, and its direct confirmation that NS-NS mergers are significant sources of the of the r-process nucleosynthesis of heavy elements, an immense new arena for prompt EM (X-rays through IR and radio) studies of fundamental physics has been opened. Over the next decade, GW observatories will expand in scale and sensitivity so the need for facilities that can provide prompt, high sensitivity, broad-band EM followup becomes more urgent. NS-NS or NS-black hole (BH) mergers will be instantly recognized (and announced) by the LIGO-international collaboration. LSST will be a prime resource for rapid tiling of what will usually be large (~10-100 degree squared) error boxes. X-ray through IR Telescopes in space with (nearly) full-sky access that can rapidly image and tile are crucial for providing the earliest imaging and spectroscopic studies of the kilonova emission immediately following NS-NS mergers. The Time-domain Spectroscopic Observatory (TSO) is a proposed Probe-class 1.3 m telescope at L2, with imaging and spectroscopy (R = 200, 1800) in 4 bands (0.3 - 5 micron) and rapid slew capability to 90% of sky. Over the past decades and even centuries, the astronomical community has accumulated a signif-icant heritage of recorded observations of a great many astronomical objects. Those records con-tain irreplaceable information about long-term evolutionary and non-evolutionary changes in our Universe, and their preservation and digitization is vital. Unfortunately, most of those data risk becoming degraded and thence totally lost. We hereby call upon the astronomical community and US funding agencies to recognize the gravity of the situation, and to commit to an interna-tional preservation and digitization efforts through comprehensive long-term planning supported by adequate resources, prioritizing where the expected scientific gains, vulnerability of the origi-nals and availability of relevant infrastructure so dictates. The importance and urgency of this issue has been recognized recently by General Assembly XXX of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in its Resolution B3: "on preservation, digitization and scientific exploration of his-torical astronomical data". The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) provides an improvement in sensitivity at energies above 10 keV by two orders of magnitude over non-focusing satellites, making it possible to probe deeper into the Galaxy and Universe. Lansbury and collaborators recently completed a catalog of 497 sources serendipitously detected in the 3-24 keV band using 13 deg2 of NuSTAR coverage. Here, we report on an optical and X-ray study of 16 Galactic sources in the catalog. We identify eight of them as stars (but some or all could have binary companions), and use information from Gaia to report distances and X-ray luminosities for three of them. There are four CVs or CV candidates, and we argue that NuSTAR J233426-2343.9 is a relatively strong CV candidate based partly on an X-ray spectrum from XMM-Newton. NuSTAR J092418-3142.2, which is the brightest serendipitous source in the Lansbury catalog, and NuSTAR J073959-3147.8 are LMXB candidates, but it is also possible that these two sources are CVs. One of the sources is a known HMXB, and NuSTAR J105008-5958.8 is a new HMXB candidate, which has strong Balmer emission lines in its optical spectrum and a hard X-ray spectrum. We discuss the implications of finding these HMXBs for the surface density (logN-logS) and luminosity function of Galactic HMXBs. We conclude that, with the large fraction of unclassified sources in the Galactic plane detected by NuSTAR in the 8-24 keV band, there could be a significant population of low luminosity HMXBs., Comment: 16 pages, accepted by ApJ

Here we report the recovery of the binary underlying the classical nova of 11 March 1437 A.D. whose age is independently confirmed by proper motion-dating, and show that in the 20th century it exhibits dwarf nova eruptions. The four oldest recovered classical novae are now all dwarf novae. Taken together they strongly suggest that mass transfer rates decrease by an order of magnitude or more in the centuries after a classical nova event, greatly slowing the evolution, and lengthening the lifetimes of these explosive binary stars., Comment: 30 pages, 7 Figures

Wide-field (> 100 deg$^2$) hard X-ray coded-aperture telescopes with high angular resolution (< 2') will enable a wide range of time domain astrophysics. For instance, transient sources such as gamma-ray bursts can be precisely localized without assistance of secondary focusing X-ray telescopes to enable rapid followup studies. On the other hand, high angular resolution in coded-aperture imaging introduces a new challenge in handling the systematic uncertainty: average photon count per pixel is often too small to establish a proper background pattern or model the systematic uncertainty in a time scale where the model remains invariant. We introduce two new techniques to improve detection sensitivity, which are designed for, but not limited to high resolution coded-aperture system: a self-background modeling scheme which utilizes continuous scan or dithering operations, and a Poisson-statistics based probabilistic approach to evaluate the significance of source detection without subtraction in handling the background. We illustrate these new imaging analysis techniques in high resolution coded-aperture telescope using the data acquired by the wide-field hard X-ray telescope ProtoEXIST2 during the high-altitude balloon flight in Fall, 2012. We review the imaging sensitivity of ProtoEXIST2 during the flight, and demonstrate the performance of the new techniques using our balloon flight data in comparison with simulated ideal Poisson background., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication for AJ

Recently, unresolved hard (20-40 keV) X-ray emission has been discovered within the central 10 pc of the Galaxy, possibly indicating a large population of intermediate polars (IPs). Chandra and XMM-Newton measurements in the surrounding ~50 pc imply a much lighter population of IPs with $\langle M_{\rm WD} \rangle \approx 0.5 M_\odot$. Here we use broad-band NuSTAR observations of two IPs: TV Columbae, which has a fairly typical but widely varying reported mass of $M_{\rm WD} \approx 0.5-1.0 M_\odot$, and IGR J17303-0601, with a heavy reported mass of $M_{\rm WD} \approx 1.0-1.2 M_\odot$. We investigate how varying spectral models and observed energy ranges influence estimated white dwarf mass. Observations of the inner 10 pc can be accounted for by IPs with $\langle M_{\rm WD} \rangle \approx 0.9 M_\odot$, consistent with that of the CV population in general, and the X-ray observed field IPs in particular. The lower mass derived by Chandra and XMM-Newton appears to be an artifact of narrow energy band fitting. To explain the (unresolved) CHXE by IPs requires an X-ray (2-8 keV) luminosity function (XLF) extending down to at least $5\times10^{31}$ erg/s. The CHXE XLF, if extended to the surrounding ~50 pc observed by Chandra and XMM-Newton, requires at least ~20-40% of the $\sim$9000 point sources are IPs. If the XLF extends just a factor of a few lower in luminosity, then the vast majority of these sources are IPs. This is in contrast to recent observations of the Galactic ridge, where the bulk of the 2-8 keV emission is ascribed to dwarf novae., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

We present the first survey results of hard X-ray point sources in the Galactic Center (GC) region by NuSTAR. We have discovered 70 hard (3-79 keV) X-ray point sources in a 0.6 deg^2 region around Sgr A* with a total exposure of 1.7 Ms, and 7 sources in the Sgr B2 field with 300 ks. We identify clear Chandra counterparts for 58 NuSTAR sources and assign candidate counterparts for the remaining 19. The NuSTAR survey reaches X-ray luminosities of ~4 x and ~8 x 10^32 erg s^-1 at the GC (8 kpc) in the 3-10 and 10-40 keV bands, respectively. The source list includes three persistent luminous X-ray binaries and the likely run-away pulsar called the Cannonball. New source-detection significance maps reveal a cluster of hard (>10 keV) X-ray sources near the Sgr A diffuse complex with no clear soft X-ray counterparts. The severe extinction observed in the Chandra spectra indicates that all the NuSTAR sources are in the central bulge or are of extragalactic origin. Spectral analysis of relatively bright NuSTAR sources suggests that magnetic cataclysmic variables constitute a large fraction (>40-60%). Both spectral analysis and logN-logS distributions of the NuSTAR sources indicate that the X-ray spectra of the NuSTAR sources should have kT > 20 keV on average for a single temperature thermal plasma model or an average photon index of Gamma = 1.5 - 2 for a power-law model. These findings suggest that the GC X-ray source population may contain a larger fraction of X-ray binaries with high plasma temperatures than the field population., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

This paper investigates the recent stellar merger transient M31LRN 2015 in the Andromeda galaxy. We analyze published optical photometry and spectroscopy along with a Hubble Space Telescope detection of the color and magnitude of the pre-outburst source. The transient outburst is consistent with dynamically driven ejecta at the onset of a common envelope episode, which eventually leads to the complete merger of a binary system. The light curve appears to contain two components: first $\sim10^{-2} M_\odot$ of fast ejecta driven by shocks at the onset of common envelope, and later, $\sim0.3 M_\odot$ of further ejecta as the secondary becomes more deeply engulfed within the primary. Just prior to merger, we find that the primary star is a $3-5.5 M_\odot$ sub-giant branch primary star with radius of $30-40R_\odot$. Its position in the color-magnitude diagram shows that it is growing in radius, consistent with a picture where it engulfs its companion. By matching the properties of the primary star to the transient outburst, we show that the optical transient lasts less than ten orbits of the original binary, which had a pre-merger period of $\sim 10$ days. We consider the possible orbital dynamics leading up to the merger, and argue that if the system merged due to the Darwin tidal instability it implies a lower mass main sequence companion of $0.1-0.6M_\odot$. We present the first sub-arcminute images of the Galactic Center above 10 keV, obtained with NuSTAR. NuSTAR resolves the hard X-ray source IGR J17456-2901 into non-thermal X-ray filaments, molecular clouds, point sources and a previously unknown central component of hard X-ray emission (CHXE). NuSTAR detects four non-thermal X-ray filaments, extending the detection of their power-law spectra with $\Gamma\sim1.3$-$2.3$ up to ~50 keV. A morphological and spectral study of the filaments suggests that their origin may be heterogeneous, where previous studies suggested a common origin in young pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). NuSTAR detects non-thermal X-ray continuum emission spatially correlated with the 6.4 keV Fe K$\alpha$ fluorescence line emission associated with two Sgr A molecular clouds: MC1 and the Bridge. Broad-band X-ray spectral analysis with a Monte-Carlo based X-ray reflection model self-consistently determined their intrinsic column density ($\sim10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$), primary X-ray spectra (power-laws with $\Gamma\sim2$) and set a lower limit of the X-ray luminosity of Sgr A* flare illuminating the Sgr A clouds to $L_X \stackrel{>}{\sim} 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Above ~20 keV, hard X-ray emission in the central 10 pc region around Sgr A* consists of the candidate PWN G359.95-0.04 and the CHXE, possibly resulting from an unresolved population of massive CVs with white dwarf masses $M_{\rm WD} \sim 0.9 M_{\odot}$. Spectral energy distribution analysis suggests that G359.95-0.04 is likely the hard X-ray counterpart of the ultra-high gamma-ray source HESS J1745-290, strongly favoring a leptonic origin of the GC TeV emission., Comment: 27 pages. OSIRIS-REx is the third spacecraft in the NASA New Frontiers Program and is planned for launch in 2016. OSIRIS-REx will orbit the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, characterize it, and return a sample of the asteroid's regolith back to Earth. The Regolith X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) is an instrument on OSIRIS-REx designed and built by students at MIT and Harvard. The purpose of REXIS is to collect and image sun-induced fluorescent X-rays emitted by Bennu, thereby providing spectroscopic information related to the elemental makeup of the asteroid regolith and the distribution of features over its surface. Telescopic reflectance spectra suggest a CI or CM chondrite analog meteorite class for Bennu, where this primitive nature strongly motivates its study. A number of factors, however, will influence the generation, measurement, and interpretation of the X-ray spectra measured by REXIS. These include: the compositional nature and heterogeneity of Bennu, the time-variable Solar state, X-ray detector characteristics, and geometric parameters for the observations. In this paper, we will explore how these variables influence the precision to which REXIS can measure Bennu's surface composition. During hard X-ray observations of the Norma spiral arm region by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) in 2013 February, a new transient source, NuSTAR J163433-4738.7, was detected at a significance level of 8-sigma in the 3-10 keV bandpass. The source is consistent with having a constant NuSTAR count rate over a period of 40 ks and is also detected simultaneously by Swift at lower significance. The source is not significantly detected by NuSTAR, Swift, or Chandra in the days before or weeks after the discovery of the transient, indicating that the strong X-ray activity lasted for between ~0.5 and 1.5 days. Near-IR imaging observations were carried out before and after the X-ray activity, but we are not able to identify the counterpart. The combined NuSTAR and Swift energy spectrum is consistent with a power-law with a photon index of Gamma = 4.1(+1.5)(-1.0) (90% confidence errors), a blackbody with kT = 1.2+/-0.3 keV, or a bremsstrahlung model with kT = 3.0(+2.1)(-1.2) keV. The reduced-chi2 values for the three models are not significantly different, ranging from 1.23 to 1.44 for 8 degrees of freedom. The spectrum is strongly absorbed with NH = 2.8(+2.3)(-1.4)e23 cm-2, 9(+15)(-7)e22 cm-2, and 1.7(+1.7)(-0.9)e23 cm-2, for the power-law, blackbody, and bremsstrahlung models, respectively. Although the high column density could be due to material local to the source, it is consistent with absorption from interstellar material along the line of sight at a distance of 11 kpc, which would indicate an X-ray luminosity >1e34 erg/s. Although we do not reach a definitive determination of the nature of NuSTAR J163433-4738.7, we suggest that it may be an unusually bright active binary or a magnetar., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, published as ApJ, 785, 4. We have assembled a tiled array (220 cm2) of fine pixel (0.6 mm) imaging CZT detectors for a balloon borne wide-field hard X-ray telescope, ProtoEXIST2. ProtoEXIST2 is a prototype experiment for a next generation hard X-ray imager MIRAX-HXI on board Lattes, a spacecraft from the Agencia Espacial Brasilieira. MIRAX will survey the 5 to 200 keV sky of Galactic bulge, adjoining southern Galactic plane and the extragalactic sky with 6' angular resolution. This survey will open a vast discovery space in timing studies of accretion neutron stars and black holes. The ProtoEXIST2 CZT detector plane consists of 64 of 5 mm thick 2 cm x 2 cm CZT crystals tiled with a minimal gap. MIRAX will consist of 4 such detector planes, each of which will be imaged with its own coded-aperture mask. We present the packaging architecture and assembly procedure of the ProtoEXIST2 detector. On 2012, Oct 10, we conducted a successful high altitude balloon experiment of the ProtoEXIST1 and 2 telescopes, which demonstrates their technology readiness for space application. During the flight both telescopes performed as well as on the ground. The OSIRIS-REx Mission was selected under the NASA New Frontiers program and is scheduled for launch in September of 2016 for a rendezvous with, and collection of a sample from the surface of asteroid Bennu in 2019. 101955 Bennu (previously 1999 RQ36) is an Apollo (near-Earth) asteroid originally discovered by the LINEAR project in 1999 which has since been classified as a potentially hazardous near-Earth object. The REgolith X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS) was proposed jointly by MIT and Harvard and was subsequently accepted as a student led instrument for the determination of the elemental composition of the asteroid's surface as well as the surface distribution of select elements through solar induced X-ray fluorescence. REXIS consists of a detector plane that contains 4 X-ray CCDs integrated into a wide field coded aperture telescope with a focal length of 20 cm for the detection of regions with enhanced abundance in key elements at 50 m scales. Elemental surface distributions of approximately 50-200 m scales can be detected using the instrument as a simple collimator. The MIRAX X-ray observatory, the first Brazilian-led astrophysics space mission, is designed to perform an unprecedented wide-field, wide-band hard X-ray (5-200 keV) survey of Galactic X-ray transient sources. In the current configuration, MIRAX will carry a set of four coded-mask telescopes with high spatial resolution Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detector planes, each one consisting of an array of 64 closely tiled CZT pixelated detectors. Taken together, the four telescopes will have a total detection area of 959 cm^2, a large field of view (60x60 degrees FWHM), high angular resolution for this energy range (6 arcmin) and very good spectral resolution (~2 keV @ 60 keV). A stratospheric balloon-borne prototype of one of the MIRAX telescopes has been developed, tested and flown by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) as part of the ProtoEXIST program. In this paper we show results of validation and calibration tests with individual CZT detectors of the ProtoEXIST second generation experiment (P2). Each one of 64 detector units of the P2 detector plane consists of an ASIC, developed by Caltech for the NuSTAR telescope, hybridized to a CZT crystal with 0.6 mm pixel size. The performance of each detector was evaluated using radioactive sources in the laboratory. The calibration results show that the P2 detectors have average energy resolution of ~2.1 keV @ 60 keV and ~2.3 keV @ 122 keV. P2 was also successfully tested on near-space environment on a balloon flight, demonstrating the detector unit readiness for integration on a space mission telescope, as well as satisfying all MIRAX mission requirements., Comment: accepted for publication in Journal of Instrumentation

The Digital Access to a Sky Century@Harvard (DASCH) project is digitizing the ~500,000 glass plate images obtained (full sky) by the Harvard College Observatory from 1885-1992. Astrometry and photometry for each resolved object are derived with photometric rms values of ~0.15mag for the initial photometry analysis pipeline. Here we describe new developments for DASCH photometry, applied to the Kepler field, that has yielded further improvements, including better identification of image blends and plate defects by measuring image profiles and astrometric deviations. A local calibration procedure using nearby stars in a similar magnitude range as the program star (similar to what has been done for visual photometry from the plates) yields additional improvement for a net photometric rms ~0.1mag. We also describe statistical measures of light curves that are now used in the DASCH pipeline processing to autonomously identify new variables. The DASCH photometry methods described here are used in the pipeline processing for the Data Releases of DASCH data (Grindlay et al. 2012; http://dasch.rc.fas.harvard.edu), as well as for the long-term variables discovered by DASCH in the Kepler field (Tang et al, in preparation)., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, and 2 tables. We present 100 year light curves of Kepler planet-candidate host stars from the Digital Access to a Sky Century at Harvard (DASCH) project. 261 out of 997 host stars have at least 10 good measurements on DASCH scans of the Harvard plates. 109 of them have at least 100 good measurements, including 70% (73 out of 104) of all host stars with g<=13 mag, and 44% (100 out of 228) of all host stars with g<=14 mag. Our typical photometric uncertainty is ~0.1-0.15 mag. No variation is found at 3-sigma level for these host stars, including 21 confirmed or candidate hot Jupiter systems which might be expected to show enhanced flares from magnetic interactions between dwarf primaries and their close and relatively massive planet companions., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission, launched on 13 June 2012, is the first focusing high-energy X-ray telescope in orbit. NuSTAR operates in the band from 3 -- 79 keV, extending the sensitivity of focusing far beyond the ~10 keV high-energy cutoff achieved by all previous X-ray satellites. The inherently low-background associated with concentrating the X-ray light enables NuSTAR to probe the hard X-ray sky with a more than one-hundred-fold improvement in sensitivity over the collimated or coded-mask instruments that have operated in this bandpass. Using its unprecedented combination of sensitivity, spatial and spectral resolution, NuSTAR will pursue five primary scientific objectives, and will also undertake a broad program of targeted observations. The observatory consists of two co-aligned grazing-incidence X-ray telescopes pointed at celestial targets by a three-axis stabilized spacecraft. Deployed into a 600 km, near-circular, 6degree inclination orbit, the Observatory has now completed commissioning, and is performing consistent with pre-launch expectations. The large-scale surveys such as PTF, CRTS and Pan-STARRS-1 that have emerged within the past 5 years or so employ digital databases and modern analysis tools to accentuate research into Time Domain Astronomy (TDA). Preparations are underway for LSST which, in another 6 years, will usher in the second decade of modern TDA. By that time the Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard (DASCH) project will have made available to the community the full sky Historical TDA database and digitized images for a century (1890--1990) of coverage. We describe the current DASCH development and some initial results, and outline plans for the "production scanning" phase and data distribution which is to begin in 2012. That will open a 100-year window into temporal astrophysics, revealing rare transients and (especially) astrophysical phenomena that vary on time-scales of a decade. We report the results of a joint \chandra-\hst study of the X-ray binary population in the massive, high-density globular cluster NGC 6388. NGC 6388 has one of the highest predicted X-ray binary production rate of any Galactic cluster. We detected a large population of 61 \chandra sources within the half-mass radius with L$_X > 5 \times 10^{30}$ \ergs. From the X-ray colors, luminosities, (lack of) variability, and spectral fitting, we identify five as likely quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries. Due to the extremely crowded nature of the core of NGC 6388, finding optical identifications to \chandra sources is challenging. We have identified four blue, optically variable counterparts to spectrally hard X-ray sources, evidence that these are bright cataclysmic variables (CVs). One showed variability of 2 magnitudes in V, indicative of a dwarf nova eruption. One other likely CV is identified by its X-ray spectrum (partial covering with high $N_H$) and strong variability, making five likely CVs identified in this cluster. The relatively bright optical magnitudes of these sources put them in the same class as CV1 in M15 and the brightest CVs in 47 Tuc.

We present multi-wavelength observations of the radio magnetar PSR J1622-4950 and its environment. Observations of PSR J1622-4950 with Chandra (in 2007 and 2009) and XMM (in 2011) show that the X-ray flux of PSR J1622-4950 has decreased by a factor of ~50 over 3.7 years, decaying exponentially with a characteristic time of 360 +/- 11 days. This behavior identifies PSR J1622-4950 as a possible addition to the small class of transient magnetars. The X-ray decay likely indicates that PSR J1622-4950 is recovering from an X-ray outburst that occurred earlier in 2007, before the 2007 Chandra observations. Observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array show strong radio variability, including a possible radio flaring event at least one and a half years after the 2007 X-ray outburst that may be a direct result of this X-ray event. Radio observations with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope reveal that PSR J1622-4950 is 8' southeast of a diffuse radio arc, G333.9+0.0, which appears non-thermal in nature and which could possibly be a previously undiscovered supernova remnant. If G333.9+0.0 is a supernova remnant then the estimates of its size and age, combined with the close proximity and reasonable implied velocity of PSR J1622-4950, suggests that these two objects could be physically associated., Comment: 14 pages with 3 tables and 3 figures. The Chandra Multiwavelength Plane (ChaMPlane) Survey aims to constrain the Galactic population of mainly accretion-powered, but also coronal, low-luminosity X-ray sources (Lx <~ 1e33 erg/s). To investigate the X-ray source content in the plane at fluxes Fx >~ 3e-14 erg/s/cm^2, we study 21 of the brightest ChaMPlane sources, viz. those with >250 net counts (0.3-8 keV). By excluding the heavily obscured central part of the plane, our optical/near-infrared follow-up puts useful constraints on their nature. We have discovered two likely accreting white-dwarf binaries. CXOPS J154305.5-522709 (CBS 7) is a cataclysmic variable showing periodic X-ray flux modulations on 1.2 hr and 2.4 hr; given its hard spectrum the system is likely magnetic. We identify CXOPS J175900.8-334548 (CBS 17) with a late-type giant; if the X-rays are indeed accretion-powered, it belongs to the small but growing class of symbiotic binaries lacking strong optical nebular emission lines. CXOPS J171340.5-395213 (CBS 14) is an X-ray transient that brightened >~100 times. We tentatively classify it as a very late-type (>M7) dwarf, of which few have been detected in X-rays. The remaining sources are (candidate) active galaxies, normal stars and active binaries, and a plausible young T Tauri star. The derived cumulative number density versus flux (log N - log S) relation for the Galactic sources appears flatter than expected for an isotropic distribution, indicating that we are seeing a non-local sample of mostly coronal sources. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a peculiar variable (designated DASCH J075731.1+201735 or J0757) discovered from our DASCH project using the digitized Harvard College Observatory archival photographic plates. It brightened by about 1.5 magnitudes in B within a year starting in 1942, and then slowly faded back to its pre-outburst brightness from 1943 to the 1950s. The mean brightness level was stable before and after the outburst, and ellipsoidal variations with a period of $P=119.18\pm0.07$ days are seen, suggesting that the star is tidally distorted. Radial-velocity measurements indicate that the orbit is nearly circular ($e=0.02\pm0.01$) with a spectroscopic period that is the same as the photometric period. The binary consists of a $1.1\pm0.3 M_\odot$ M0III star, and a $0.6\pm0.2 M_\odot$ companion, very likely a white dwarf (WD). Unlike other symbiotic binaries, there is no sign of emission lines or a stellar wind in the spectra. With an outburst timescale of ~10 years and estimated B band peak luminosity M_B~0.7, J0757 is different from any other known classic or symbiotic novae. The most probable explanation of the outburst is Hydrogen shell-burning on the WD, although an accretion-powered flare cannot be ruled out., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have searched for optical identifications for 79 Chandra X-ray sources that lie within the half-mass radius of the nearby, core-collapsed globular cluster NGC 6397, using deep Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Channel imaging in H-alpha, R, and B. Photometry of these images allows us to classify candidate counterparts based on color-magnitude diagram location. In addition to recovering nine previously detected cataclysmic variables (CVs), we have identified six additional faint CV candidates, a total of 42 active binaries (ABs), two millisecond pulsars (MSPs), one candidate active galactic nucleus, and one candidate interacting galaxy pair. Of the 79 sources, 69 have a plausible optical counterpart. The 15 likely and possible CVs in NGC 6397 mostly fall into two groups: a brighter group of six for which the optical emission is dominated by contributions from the secondary and accretion disk, and a fainter group of seven for which the white dwarf dominates the optical emission. There are two possible transitional objects that lie between these groups. The faintest CVs likely lie near the minimum of the CV period distribution, where an accumulation is expected. The spatial distribution of the brighter CVs is much more centrally concentrated than those of the fainter CVs and the active binaries. This may represent the result of an evolutionary process in which CVs are produced by dynamical interactions, such as exchange reactions, near the cluster center and are scattered to larger orbital radii, over their lifetimes, as they age and become fainter., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

KU Cyg is an eclipsing binary consisting of a F-type star accreting through a large accretion disk from a K5III red giant. Here we present the discovery of a 5-yr dip around 1900 found from its 100 yr DASCH (Digital Access to a Sky Century at Harvard) light curve. It showed a ~0.5 mag slow fading from 1899 to 1903, and brightened back around 1904 on a relatively shorter timescale. The light curve shape of the 1899-1904 fading-brightening event differs from the dust production and dispersion process observed in R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars, which usually has a faster fading and slower recovery, and for KU Cyg is probably related to the accretion disk surrounding the F star. The slow fading in KU Cyg is probably caused by increases in dust extinction in the disk, and the subsequent quick brightening may be due to the evaporation of dust transported inwards through the disk. The extinction excess which caused the fading may arise from increased mass transfer rate in the system, or from dust clump ejections from the K giant., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

[Abridged] We have discovered 10 periodic X-ray sources from the 1 Ms Chandra ACIS observation of the Limiting Window (LW), a low extinction region (A_V~3.9) at 1.4 Deg south of the Galactic center. The observed periods (~1.3 to 3.4 hours) and the X-ray luminosities (10^{31.8-32.9} erg s^-1 at 8 kpc) of the 10 periodic sources, combined with the lack of bright optical counterparts and thus high X-ray-to-optical flux ratios, suggest that they are likely accreting binaries, in particular, magnetic cataclysmic variables (MCVs). All of the 10 sources exhibit a relatively hard X-ray spectrum (PLI<2 for a power law model) and X-ray spectra of at least five show an extinction larger than the field average expected from the interstellar medium in the region. The discovery of these periodic X-ray sources in the LW further supports the current view that MCVs constitute the majority of low luminosity hard X-ray sources (~10^{30-33} erg s^-1) in the Bulge. The period distribution of these sources resembles those of polars, whereas the relatively hard spectra suggest that they could be intermediate polars (IPs). These puzzling properties can be explained by unusual polars with buried magnetic fields or a rare sub-class of MCVs, nearly synchronous MCVs. These unusual MCVs may provide important clues in the evolutionary path of MCVs from IPs to polars. The completeness simulation indicates >~40% of the hard X-ray sources in the LW are periodic. Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard (DASCH) is a project to digitize the collection of approximately 525,000 astronomical plates held at the Harvard College Observatory. This paper presents an overview of the DASCH data processing pipeline, with special emphasis on the processing of multiple-exposure plates. Such plates extended the dynamic range of photograph emulsions and improved photometric accuracy by minimizing variations in plate development procedures. Two approaches are explored in this paper: The repetitive use of astrometry.net (Lang et al. 2010) and local correlation searches.
