Abstract

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Comment: 373 pages, many figures, to be published by J. Abstract

In this paper, we propose a real-time free-running time scale based on four remote hydrogen masers. The clocks in the ensemble were scattered around Beijing, connected by urban fiber links using a novel frequency synchronization system. The remote clock ensemble prevents the time scale from potential problems caused by correlation among co-located clocks. Insofar as it is real-time, it fulfills the requirements for applications such as navigation, telecommunications and so on. The free-running time scale is updated every 1200 s, and a disturbance-resistant algorithm makes it robust to fiber link disturbances and clock malfunctions. The results of a continuous experiment over 224 days are reported. The stability of the time scale outperformed any clock in the ensemble for averaging times of more than approximately 10000 s.

Abstract

The correlation of co-located hydrogen masers (H-masers) is difficult to measure because their common-mode noise induced by the environment will be cancelled out during the comparison measurement. With the development of fibre-based high-precision time and frequency transfer technique, the correlation of co-located hydrogen masers can be directly measured with the help of remote H-masers. Recently, a fiber-based frequency synchronization network was constructed in the Beijing region by connecting 5 H-masers from 4 institutions. The correlation coefficient of atomic clocks is defined and the correlation between two co-located H-masers is measured using both experimental and simulative methods. The results show that the correlation is not prominent until the averaging time is larger than $\sim10^3$s; then, the coefficient grows rapidly for averaging times ranging from $\sim10^3$s to $\sim10^5$s and decreases beyond $\sim10^5$s up to 5 days.

5. Highly accurate fiber transfer delay measurement with large dynamic range

Abstract

A novel and efficient method for fiber transfer delay measurement is demonstrated. Fiber transfer delay measurement in time domain is converted into the frequency measurement of the modulation signal in frequency domain, accompany with a coarse and easy ambiguity resolving process. This method achieves a sub-picosecond resolution, with an accuracy of 1 picosecond, and a large dynamic range up to 50 km as well as no measurement dead zone.

Abstract

Well-sampled optical and radio light curves of BL Lacertae in B, V, R, I bands and 4.8, 8.0, 14.5 GHz from 1968 to 2014 were presented in this paper. A possible $1.26 \pm 0.05$ yr period in optical bands and a $7.50 \pm 0.15$ yr period in radio bands were detected based on discrete correlation function, structure function as well as Jurkevich method. Correlations among different bands were also analyzed and no reliable time delay was found between optical bands. Very weak correlations were detected between V band and radio bands. However, in radio bands the variation at low frequency lagged that at high frequency obviously. The spectrum of BL Lacertae turned mildly bluer when the object turned brighter, and stronger bluer-when-brighter trends were found for short flares. 7. Reconstructing the cosmic density field with the distribution of dark matter halos

Abstract

We develop a new method to reconstruct the cosmic density field from the distribution of dark matter haloes above a certain mass threshold. Our motivation is that well-defined samples of galaxy groups/clusters, which can be used to represent the dark halo population, can now be selected from large redshift surveys of galaxies, and our ultimate goal is to use such data to reconstruct the cosmic density field in the local universe. Our reconstruction method starts with a sample of dark matter haloes above a given mass threshold. Each volume element in space is assigned to the domain of the nearest halo according to a distance measure that is scaled by the virial radius of the halo. The distribution of the mass in and around dark matter haloes of a given mass is modelled using the cross-correlation function between dark matter haloes and the mass distribution within their domains. We use N-body cosmological simulations to show that the density profiles required in our reconstruction scheme can be determined reliably from large cosmological simulations, and that our method can reconstruct the density field accurately using haloes with masses down to $\sim 10^{12}\msun$ (above which samples of galaxy groups can be constructed from current large redshift surveys of galaxies). Working in redshift space, we demonstrate that the redshift distortions due to the peculiar velocities of haloes can be corrected in an iterative way. The Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC's conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. Abstract

Functional characterization of disease-causing variants at risk loci has been a significant challenge. Here we report a high-throughput single-nucleotide polymorphisms sequencing (SNPs-seq) technology to simultaneously screen hundreds to thousands of SNPs for their allele-dependent protein-binding differences. This technology takes advantage of higher retention rate of protein-bound DNA oligos in protein purification column to quantitatively sequence these SNP-containing oligos. We apply this technology to test prostate cancer-risk loci and observe differential allelic protein binding in a significant number of selected SNPs. We also test a unique application of self-transcribing active regulatory region sequencing (STARR-seq) in characterizing allele-dependent transcriptional regulation and provide detailed functional analysis at two risk loci (RGS17 and ASCL2). Together, we introduce a powerful high-throughput pipeline for large-scale screening of functional SNPs at disease risk loci.

The article focuses on the high gain and efficiency Doherty amplifier for wireless local area network (WLAN) mobile base stations. It involves three advanced methods which include Doherty amplifier is developed with uneven power drive, a special inverted Doherty topology is proposed in order to optimize the average efficiency of the Doherty amplifier, and a three-stage structure is adopted to increase the total gain. It states that the Freescale MFR6S21050L device was used to satisfy linearity and efficiency of Doherty power amplifier.

Abstract

Ru-catalyzed olefin metathesis has been successfully applied to the synthesis of biscardanol derivatives and cardanol-based porphyrins. Using Hoveyda–Grubbs catalyst ( C627 ), the reactions were performed with various cardanol derivatives ( 2 , 5 , 7 , and 9 ) to make novel biscardanol derivatives. With the use of the second-generation Grubbs catalyst ( C848 ) and Ti(O i Pr) 4 , the ring-closing metathesis of cardanol-based porphyrin 11 was carried out to afford cyclic cardanol-based porphyrin derivative 12 .

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of nasogastric tube (NGT) and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube feeding on the susceptibility of pulmonary infection in long-term coma patients with stroke or traumatic brain injury. Methods: A total of 295 candidates who were in long-term coma after stroke or traumatic brain injury but without pulmonary infection and eligible for PEG catheterization were screened prospectively between January 2014 and February 2018. The patients were divided into PEG group (86 patients) and NGT group (209 patients) according to the choice of next-of-kin. Data related to the susceptibility of pulmonary infection were collected and analyzed in the two groups one month after the catheterization. Results: After follow-up for one month, compared with NGT group, patients in PEG group had a lower incidence of pulmonary infection (23.3% vs 37.8%, P =0.023), a later occurrence of pulmonary infection (average time: 21 days vs 13 days, P =0.034), and a less severe pulmonary infection (7.0% vs 12.9%, P =0.029). The following characteristics made patients more susceptible to pulmonary infection: age ≥ 70 years ( HR =1.619, 95% CI 1.054-2.172), Charlson comorbidity index ≥ 2 points ( HR =1.647, 95% CI 1.043-2.485), using of proton pump inhibitor ≥ 7 days ( HR =1.725, 95% CI 1.214-2.738), and number of pressure ulcers ≥ 3 ( HR =2.109, 95% CI 1.128-3.844). However, serum albumin concentration ≥35 g/L ( HR =0.670, 95% CI 0.375-0.963) was a protective factor for pulmonary infections. The number of consistent pathogens cultivated from saliva, gastric juice and sputum simultaneously in NGT and PEG group was 35 strains (27.8%) and 8 strains (13.3%), respectively ( P =0.029). The mortality of pulmonary infection was similar in the two groups (3.5% vs 4.3%, P =1.000), but the death due to pulmonary infection in the PEG group occur later (median time: 20 days vs 11 days, P =0.012). Conclusions: PEG feeding was a preferred nutrition way which could reduce the risk of pulmonary infection more effectively than NGT feeding which might favored a retrograde gastro-pulmonary route by which pathogens colonized in stomach migrated to respiratory tract. Patients with characteristics mentioned above had the susceptibility of pulmonary infection, thus risk assessment of pulmonary infection should be conducted before selecting the catheterization method.

Abstract

Transition metal (TM) doped II-VI semiconductors have attracted great attention due to their luminescence and diluted magnetism. In this study, the Fe 3+ -doped ZnSe nanobelts (NBs) were grown by a facile CVD method. The surface morphology observed via SEM is smooth and clean and the elemental composition measured via EDS confirms that the Fe 3+ ions were incorporated into ZnSe NBs successfully. The micro-Raman scattering spectra demonstrate that the as-prepared NBs have the zinc blende structure. Furthermore, the Raman spectra of the Fe 3+ -doped NBs were compared with those of pure and Fe 2+ -doped reference samples. The former with a higher signal-to-noise ratio, an enhanced 2LO mode, a stronger LO mode redshift and a larger intensity ratio of LO/TO mode as well as the lower acoustic phonon modes confirms the better crystallization and the stronger electron-phonon coupling on Fe 3+ -incorporation. The emission of single Fe 3+ ion, assigned to the 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 transition, was observed at about 570 nm. Moreover, increasing the doping concentration of Fe 3+ ions caused the formation of different Fe-Fe coupled pairs in the lattice, which emitted light at about 530-555 nm for an antiferromagnetic-coupled pair, possibly due to the stacking faults and at about 620-670 nm for a ferromagnetic-coupled pair., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Abstract

Aimed to address the defects of the large mean square error (MSE), and the slow convergence speed in equalizing the multi-modulus signals of the constant modulus algorithm (CMA), a multi-modulus algorithm (MMA) based on global artificial fish swarm (GAFS) intelligent optimization of DNA encoding sequences (GAFS-DNA-MMA) was proposed. To improve the convergence rate and reduce the MSE, this proposed algorithm adopted an encoding method based on DNA nucleotide chains to provide a possible solution to the problem. Furthermore, the GAFS algorithm, with its fast convergence and global search ability, was used to find the best sequence. The real and imaginary parts of the initial optimal weight vector of MMA were obtained through DNA coding of the best sequence. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence speed and smaller MSE in comparison with the CMA, the MMA, and the AFS-DNA-MMA.

Abstract

This study proposes use of the DNA genetic artificial fish swarm constant modulus blind equalization algorithm (DNA-G-AFS-CMBEA) to overcome the local convergence of the CMBEA. In this proposed algorithm, after the fusion of the fast convergence of the AFS algorithm and the global search capability of the DNA-G algorithm to drastically optimize the position vector of the artificial fish, the global optimal position vector is obtained and used as the initial optimal weight vector of the CMBEA. The result of application of this improved method in medical image processing demonstrates that the proposed algorithm outperforms the CMBEA and the AFS-CMBEA in removing the noise in a medical image and improving the peak signal to noise ratio.

34. Lateralizing value of early head turning and ictal dystonia in temporal lobe seizures: a video-EEG study.

Abstract

To investigate early head turning, we retrospectively studied videotapes of 262 seizures from 82 patients who were seizure free after temporal lobectomy. Early head movements were arbitrarily classified into non-tonic turning, tonic turning, and absence of turning. Among the 222 seizures which showed early head turning, 168 (75.7%) had non-tonic turning and 54 (24.3%) had tonic turning. The direction of the first head turning was ipsilateral to the epileptogenic foci in 132 (78.6%) seizures with non-tonic turning and in 35 (64.8%) seizures showing tonic head turning. The proportion of seizures with turning towards the ipsilateral side in the presence of tonic and non-tonic head turning were significantly different (P= 0.04). Seventy-four seizures (28.2%) evolved to secondary generalization, more frequently found in seizures with early head turning (P= 0.0015) and especially those showing tonic turning (P< 0.0001). The direction of head turning immediately preceding secondary generalization was contralateral to the lesion side in 53 seizures (82.8%). Dystonic upper limb posturing occurred in 86 seizures (32.8%), exclusively contralateral to the seizure focus, whereas 65 (75.6%) were associated with initial head turning ipsilateral to the focus. In summary, temporal lobe seizures with tonic head turning tends to secondarily generalize and the direction of head turning before secondarily generalized was contralateral to the seizure foci. Earlier in the seizures the direction of non-tonic head turning tends to be towards the epileptogenic hemisphere. In addition, dystonic posturing of the extremities is a significant lateralizing sign to the contralateral hemisphere in temporal lobe seizures., (Copyright 2001 BEA Trading Ltd.)

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate antiepileptic drug (AED) withdrawal during video-EEG monitoring in adult patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE)., Methods: Between 1995 and 1997, 102 consecutive patients with refractory TLE were admitted to the epilepsy monitoring unit for presurgical evaluation. Patients were monitored with ongoing AEDs being rapidly decreased and discontinued in 4-6 days. The monitoring was continued until sufficient numbers of seizures were recorded. Serum AED levels were checked at admission and after the first complex partial seizure (CPS)., Results: In all, 89 patients had 429 CPSs (mean, 4.8 per patient), including 156 (36.4%) secondarily generalized. A mean of 153.8 h (16-451 h) was required for completing the monitoring in each patient. Forty-three (48.3%) patients experienced seizure clusters, and eight (9.0%) had generalized seizures that had never occurred or had been absent for years. However, none evolved to status epilepticus. Carbamazepine was the most commonly used AED in 71.9% of patients, followed by valproate and phenytoin. When the first CPS occurred, mean 77.2 h since the beginning of the monitoring, serum levels of these three AEDs were mostly subtherapeutic rather than minimal., Conclusions: Acute AED withdrawal effectively provoked seizures in TLE patients undergoing presurgical video-EEG monitoring. However, nearly 50% of patients had seizure clusters or secondarily generalized seizures. Serum AED levels were mostly subtherapeutic when the first CPS occurred.

Abstract

Purpose: The efficacy and safety of topiramate (TPM) as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of adult Chinese patients with refractory partial epilepsy were investigated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study., Methods: A total of 46 patients who had four or more complex partial seizures with or without secondary generalization within an 8-week baseline phase were enrolled. Patients were assigned randomly to receive TPM (n = 23) or placebo (n = 23). TPM or placebo was titrated to target doses of 300 mg/d for 6 weeks and maintained at stabilized levels for another 8 weeks. Concomitant antiepileptic drugs remained at constant previous levels during the trial., Results: In all, 41 patients completed the trial (TPM group, n = 20; placebo group, n = 21). The proportion of patients with a > or =50% reduction from baseline in complex partial seizures was 11 of 23 (47.8%) in the TPM group and 3 of 23 (13.0%) in the placebo group (p = 0.01). In addition, patients treated with TPM had significantly better investigator (p = 0.014) and patient (p = 0.0005) global assessment scores than patients in the placebo group. Adverse events were mostly mild and transient, with no significant differences between treatment groups. Two patients with TPM therapy complained of weight loss. Routine blood cell counts and other laboratory results showed no significant changes from baseline in either treatment group., Conclusions: TPM 300 mg/d is effective and well tolerated as treatment for refractory partial epilepsy in adults.
