Nonconventional feed ingredients for different aquatic species need to be tested to establish their nutritional value. Thus, this study assessed the use of canary seed (CS), Phalaris canariensis L., and giant kelp seaweed (KS), Macrocystis pyrifera, as ingredients for Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., feed. Two feeding trials were conducted: (1) Growth trial, where seven feeds were tested; a control diet (CD) and six CS/KS diets (100, 200, 300 g/kg). Fish fed CS/KS diets (100 and 200 g/kg) had similar weight gain to those fed CD, whereas CS/KS diets (300 g/kg) decreased growth performance (p < 0.05). The CS‐diet Economic Conversion Ratios and KS100 diet were similar to CD, while KS inclusion levels (200, 300 g/kg) decreased this parameter (p < 0.05). Dietary KS inclusion of 300 g/kg significantly decreased the profit index compared with CD and CS‐diets (p < 0.05, 2), digestibility trial, where nine feeds were evaluated: a reference diet (RD); six CS/KS diets (100, 200, 300 g/kg) to determine diet digestibility, and two CS/KS diets (300 g/kg) to determine ingredient digestibility. CS dry matter, protein, and lipid digestibility were higher than KS (p < 0.05). The results suggest that CS has higher nutritional value than KS for Nile tilapia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This review analyzes the most relevant information from 88 publications of which 41 are focused on the nutritional and functional quality of canaryseed, which is native to the Mediterranean region with a world production of approximately 257,600 tons in 2020. It contains a moderate contribution of protein, within which stands out some amino acid content rich in lysine, arginine and tryptophan, higher than other edible grains, it also has a high content of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats; in addition, it has been found to provide a high content of lipase type enzymes helping in the reduction of triglycerides in the blood when used as an ingredient in the diet of humans. More recent studies indicate that it is a very important source of sterols, which is why this seed has been used in popular culture to treat problems associated with increased cholesterol and some cardiovascular diseases, especially in people with obesity. However, in freshwater fish the use of this seed has not been potentiated to increase aspects such as added value and to propose new non-conventional ingredients for the aquaculture food industry, therefore, these aspects are the central part of this review., Esta revisión analiza la información más relevante de 88 publicaciones de las cuales 41 están enfocados sobre la calidad nutricional y funcional de la semilla de alpiste, la cual es originaria de la región mediterránea con una producción mundial de aproximadamente 257,600 ton en 2020. Contiene un aporte moderado de proteína, dentro del cual destaca un contenido aminoacídico rico en lisina, arginina y triptófano, mayor que otros granos comestibles, también posee un alto contenido de grasas monoinsaturadas y polinsaturadas; además, se ha encontrado que aporta un gran contenido de enzimas tipo lipasas ayudando estas en la reducción de triglicéridos de la sangre cuando se le utiliza como un ingrediente en la dieta de humanos. Estudios más recientes indican que es una muy importante fuente de esteroles, por lo cual se ha utilizado esta semilla en la cultura popular para tratar problemas asociados con el incremento del colesterol y algunas enfermedades cardiovasculares sobre todo en personas con obesidad. Sin embargo, en peces dulceacuícolas el uso de esta semilla no se ha potencializado para incrementar aspectos como valor agregado y proponer nuevos ingredientes no convencionales para la industria alimentaria acuícola, por lo tanto, estos aspectos son la parte central de esta revisión.

El uso de los aceites esenciales extraído del orégano son relevantes si tomamos en cuenta sus cantidades de timol, flavonoides, taninos, triterpenos y carvacrol contenido, las cuales le dan su capacidad antioxidante, para disminuir la formación de radicales libres. Además, tiene propiedades antibacteriales, antifúngicas, antiparasitarias, antimicrobianas, antivirales, antialérgicas, vasodilatadoras, estrogénicas, antiinflamatorias, espasmolíticas, antitumorales, entre otras. El objetivo de la revisión fue hacer un análisis preliminar del uso del aceite de orégano spp. en la salud y la producción animal. A manera de conclusión se puede decir que el uso de los aceites esenciales de orégano, principalmente de las subespecies vulgare y Lippia, han sido una alternativa como aditivos en la alimentación en la producción de especies de animales domésticos donde se ha podido mejorar la funcionalidad del sistema digestivo en pollos, se ha logrado reducir las emisiones de metano entérico en rumiantes y reduce malos olores en eses de los cerdos., The use of essential oil extracted from oregano is relevant if we take into account the high concentrations of thymol, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes and carvacrol, which are substances with antioxidant capacity, since they counteract the formation of free radicals, in addition to having antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, antiviral, antiallergic, vasodilator, and estrogenic, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, antitumor properties, among others. The objective of this review was to conduct a preliminary analysis of the use of oregano oil spp. in animal health and production. In conclusion, it can be said that the use of essential oils of oregano mainly of the subspecies vulgare and Lippia have been an alternative as feed additives in the production of domestic animal species. The digestive system in chickens has been improved its functionality due to this, also it has been possible to reduce enteric methane emissions in ruminants and reduce bad odors in pigs, O uso de óleos essenciais extraídos do orégano é relevante se levarmos em consideração as quantidades de timol, flavonóides, taninos, triterpenos e carvacrol, que lhe conferem capacidade antioxidante, para diminuir a formação de radicais livres. Além disso, tem propriedades antibacteriana, antifúngica, antiparasitária, antimicrobiana, antiviral, antialérgica, vasodilatadora, estrogênica, antiinflamatória, espasmolítica, antitumoral, entre outras. O objetivo da revisão foi fazer uma análise preliminar do uso do óleo de orégano spp. em saúde e produção animal. Em conclusão, pode-se dizer que o uso de óleos essenciais de orégano, principalmente das subespécies vulgare e Lippia, tem sido uma alternativa como aditivo na alimentação de animais na produção de espécies de animais domésticos, onde foi possível melhorar a funcionalidade do sistema digestivo em galinhas, foi possível reduzir as emissões entéricas de metano nos ruminantes e reduzir os maus odores nos porcos.

7. Aprovechamiento de desechos de pescado y cáscara de piña para producir ensilado biológico

Six treatments were formulated to make silages with fish wastes, corn stubble, molasses, pineapple peel (PP) [15, 30 and 45%] and inoculum Lactobacillus sp. or Lactobacillus B2. The silages of each treatment were made in triplicate and incubated at 30 °C for 0, 2, 4, 7 and 14 days in order to evaluate the acidification under a 3 x 2 x 5 factorial design. The chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were determined to the silages at end of fermentation. The highest acidification (p<0.05) was presented in the treatments with PP 15 and 30% and Lactobacillus B2 for 7 days. The highest dry matter content (39.3%) (p<0.05) was obtained with 15% of PP and the crude protein was from 26.5 to 31% without significant difference. The highest concentration of lipids (9.85%) was present in the treatments with PP 30 and 45% and Lactobacillus B2. Detergent fiber fractions decreased with increasing PP level and the highest IVDMD (82.9%) occurred in silages when using Lactobacillus B2, regardless of PP level. The silages obtained are an alternative in ruminant feeding, Se formularon seis tratamientos para elaborar ensilado biológico con desechos de pescado, rastrojo de maíz, melaza, cáscara de piña (CP) [15, 30 y 45%] e inóculo Lactobacillus sp. o Lactobacillus B2. Los ensilados de cada tratamiento se hicieron por triplicado y se incubaron a 30°C durante 0, 2, 4, 7 y 14 días con el propósito de evaluar la acidificación bajo un diseño factorial 3 x 2 x 5. A los ensilados se les determinó la composición química y la digestibilidad in vitro de la materia seca (DIVMS) al terminar la fermentación. La acidificación más alta (p<0.05) la presentaron los tratamientos con CP 15 y 30% y Lactobacillus B2 a los 7 días. Con 15% de CP se obtuvo el mayor contenido de materia seca (39.3%) (p<0.05) y la proteína cruda (26.5 a 31%, rango) fue igual (p>0.05). La concentración mayor de lípidos (9.85%) se presentó en los tratamientos con CP 30 y 45% y Lactobacillus B2. Las fracciones de fibra detergente disminuyeron al aumentar el nivel de CP y la DIVMS más alta (82.9%) se presentó en los ensilados al utilizar Lactobacillus B2, independientemente del nivel de CP (p<0.05). - Abstract
Seaweeds have been evaluated as feed ingredients or additives for aquatic organisms with positive results on growth performance and disease resistance. To evaluate the response of growth and feed utilization using a seaweed liquid extract (KelproidanMR), obtained from Macrocystis pyrifera as a feed additive 4% inclusion (K4%) in balanced feed (33.6% protein and 7.3% lipids) for juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei, a 45 days growth bioassay, under controlled conditions was conducted. Compared to the control treatment, the results indicate that the inclusion of KelproidanMR did not affect the zootechnical parameters of survival, growth, feed intake nor the feeding response of shrimp. In terms of feed utilization, K4% treatment significantly improved feed conversion rate, and protein efficiency (P<0.05). It was also revealed that KelproidanMR allowed two different responses in proximate composition of shrimp muscle, first increased protein content and otherwise decreased lipid content (P<0.05). In conclusion, KelproidanMR could be used as a feed additive for juvenile L. vannamei., Las algas marinas se han evaluado como aditivos alimentarios para organismos acuáticos con resultados positivos en las variables productivas y en la resistencia a enfermedades. En la presente investigación se evaluó un extracto líquido de Macrocystis pyrifera (KelproidanMR) al 4% de inclusión (K4%) en alimento balanceado (33.6% proteína y 7.3% lípidos) para juveniles de Litopenaeus vannamei. Se realizó un bioensayo de crecimiento durante 45 días en condiciones controladas. Comparado con el tratamiento testigo, los resultados indican que la inclusión de KelproidanMR no afectó la supervivencia, crecimiento, consumo de alimento y la respuesta alimentaria de los camarones, el tratamiento K4% mejoró la conversión alimenticia y la eficiencia proteica (P<0.05). Además, incrementó el contenido de proteína y disminuyó el contenido de lípidos del músculo en los camarones (P<0.05). Las conclusiones obtenidas en el experimento indican que el producto comercial KelproidanMR podría utilizarse como aditivo alimentario en alimentos para juveniles de camarón patiblanco del Pacífico.

It is estimated that in the coming years the consumption of tilapia in its different presentations increase more than 50%, which will be produced mainly through aquaculture, becoming one of the main sources of protein worldwide. Thus, Currently research is focused on the search for new ingredients not conventional for the food and nutrition of tilapia. In Mexico, an ingredient with potential to be used in feed for tilapia is the seed of birdseed, since it has an adequate protein content and essential amino acid profile, which are similar to other cereal grains that are conventionally used as ingredients for tilapia growth. In addition, birdseed has a low anti-nutritional profile and provides an important contribution of substances with functional properties such as those of phytosterols, which lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in humans and different animal species. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was the evaluation nutritional and functional of the canary seed by means of a growth bioassay with duration of 60 days in nilotic tilapia specimens of 40 g initial weight, where determined survival, growth rate, weight gain, feed conversion and protein efficiency every 15 days, through 4 isoproteic and isolipidic diets, one of they control it and three with different levels of birdseed (10%, 20% and 30%). The diets were analyzed to determine its hydrostability, proximal composition and profile of phytosterols. On the other hand, the concentration of total cholesterol, cholesterol bound to LDL lipoproteins, HDL lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in fillet, liver and blood at the end of the bioassay, in addition to sensory quality in terms of taste, color, odor and texture of tilapia fillet by a group of potential consumers using a unstructured hedonic climbing.
