Over the past decades, a multitude of different brain source imaging algorithms have been developed to identify the neural generators underlying the surface electroencephalography measurements. While most of these techniques focus on determining the source positions, only a small number of recently developed algorithms provides an indication of the spatial extent of the distributed sources. In a recent comparison of brain source imaging approaches, the VB-SCCD algorithm has been shown to be one of the most promising algorithms among these methods. However, this technique suffers from several problems: it leads to amplitude-biased source estimates, it has difficulties in separating close sources, and it has a high computational complexity due to its implementation using second order cone programming. To overcome these problems, we propose to include an additional regularization term that imposes sparsity in the original source domain and to solve the resulting optimization problem using the alternating direction method of multipliers. Furthermore, we show that the algorithm yields more robust solutions by taking into account the temporal structure of the data. We also propose a new method to automatically threshold the estimated source distribution, which permits to delineate the active brain regions. The new algorithm, called Source Imaging based on Structured Sparsity (SISSY), is analyzed by means of realistic computer simulations and is validated on the clinical data of four patients.

Abstract Background Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) symptoms have broad impact, and may affect individuals regardless of COVID-19 severity, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or age. A prominent PASC symptom is cognitive dysfunction, colloquially referred to as “brain fog” and characterized by declines in short-term memory, attention, and concentration. Cognitive dysfunction can severely impair quality of life by impairing daily functional skills and preventing timely return to work. Methods RECOVER-NEURO is a prospective, multi-center, multi-arm, phase 2, randomized, active-comparator design investigating 3 interventions: (1) BrainHQ is an interactive, online cognitive training program; (2) PASC-Cognitive Recovery is a cognitive rehabilitation program specifically designed to target frequently reported challenges among individuals with brain fog; (3) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive form of mild electrical brain stimulation. The interventions will be combined to establish 5 arms: (1) BrainHQ; (2) BrainHQ + PASC-Cognitive Recovery; (3) BrainHQ + tDCS-active; (4) BrainHQ + tDCS-sham; and (5) Active Comparator. The interventions will occur for 10 weeks. Assessments will be completed at baseline and at the end of intervention and will include cognitive testing and patient-reported surveys. All study activities can be delivered in Spanish and English. Discussion This study is designed to test whether cognitive dysfunction symptoms can be alleviated by the use of pragmatic and established interventions with different mechanisms of action and with prior evidence of improving cognitive function in patients with neurocognitive disorder. If successful, results will provide beneficial treatments for PASC-related cognitive dysfunction. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05965739. Registered on July 25, 2023.

Abstract Background The fish embryo acute toxicity (FET) test with the zebrafish (Danio rerio) was developed to assess the acute fish toxicity of chemicals or environmental samples as a replacement for the Acute Fish Test (AFT) with juvenile fish. However, the FET is not yet established in the regulatory context. One reason is the (postulated) difference between the biotransformation capacities of embryos and juvenile fish. The present study was designed to develop a procedure for external metabolization of test substances prior to testing in the FET. The workflow allows simultaneous exposure of the embryos to the maternal substances and their potential metabolites throughout the entire exposure period. After a 2 h incubation of the samples at 37 °C with non-toxic concentrations of a rat liver S9 homogenate or an animal-free (ewoS9R) metabolization system, freshly fertilized zebrafish embryos are added and incubated up to 120 h post-fertilization at 26 °C. Five biotransformable model substances (allyl alcohol, benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), chlorpyrifos (CP), tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) and bisphenol A (BPA)) were evaluated for embryotoxicity with and without external metabolization. Results Only for allyl alcohol, external metabolization with both rat S9 and ewoS9R resulted in significantly higher embryotoxicity than under non-premetabolized conditions and, thus, in a better correlation of FET and AFT data. For B[a]P, CP, TDCPP and BPA, there was no relevant difference between data derived from the FET (with and without pre-metabolization) and literature AFT data; even though the FET results with and without pre-metabolization differed significantly for BPA (with rat S9 and ewoS9R) and TDCPP (rat S9 only). Conclusions External pre-metabolization appears a promising add-on to the FET protocol to improve the correlation with AFT data of certain biotransformable substances and might help to strengthen the FET as an alternative to the AFT and finally to reduce or replace sentient animals used for acute fish toxicity data in the regulatory context. Measurements of nutrient and suspended matter concentrations and loads entering and leaving the Castanhão reservoir during the rainy season were carried out to assess the influence of this large reservoir on land-sea fluvial transport in the ephemeral Jaguaribe river basin. Spatial variation indicated statistically significant attenuation of concentrations only for total phosphorous and suspended matter across the reservoir. Strong retention of nutrients and suspended matter loads by the reservoir was observed with average trapping efficiency of 89% for dissolved silicon, 98% of soluble reactive phosphorus, 71% for ammonium, 87% for total nitrogen, 98% for total phosphorus and 97% for suspended matter compared to the reservoir inflow. The dam operational procedure defined by the ephemeral conditions of the river reduced water releases compared to reservoir inflow and induced strong retention of nutrient and suspended matter loads within the reservoir when fluvial transfer occurs in this semiarid watershed.Medidas de concentrações e fluxos de nutrientes e material particulado em suspensão de entrada e saída do Açude Castanhão foram efetuadas para determinar a influência de um grande reservatório no transporte fluvial entre o continente e o oceano na bacia hidrográfica intermitente do Rio Jaguaribe. A variação espacial indicou uma atenuação estatisticamente significativa ao longo do reservatório somente para as concentrações de fósforo total e material particulado em suspensão. Os resultados indicam uma forte retenção de nutrientes e do material particulado em suspensão com eficiências de retenção de 89% para sílica dissolvida, 98% para fósforo solúvel reativo, 71% para amônia, 87% para nitrogênio total, 98% para fósforo total e 97% para o material particulado em suspensão em relação aos fluxos de entrada no reservatório. A rotina de operação da barragem definida pela condição intermitente do Rio Jaguaribe reduz a descarga de água comparada com a entrada no reservatório e induz forte retenção do fluxo fluvial de nutrientes e material particulado em suspensão pelo reservatório.

Schistosomiasis is a group of both acute and chronic parasitic trematode infections of the genus Schistosoma. Research into schistosomiasis has been minimal, leading to its classification as a neglected tropical disease, yet more than 140 million people are infected with schistosomes globally. There are no treatments available for early-stage infections, schistosomal dermatitis, or Katayama syndrome, other than symptomatic control with steroids and antihistamines, as the maturing organisms seem to be mostly resistant to typical antiparasitics. However, praziquantel (PZQ) has been the drug of choice for schistosomiasis for decades in the latter stages of the disease. Though it is effective against all three clinically relevant species, heavy reliance on PZQ has led to concerns of schistosome resistance, especially in areas that have implemented this drug in mass drug administration (MDA) programs. This article summarizes the available literature concerning the available evidence for and against a warranted concern for PZQ resistance, genomic studies in schistosomes, proposed mechanisms of resistance, and future research in alternative methods of schistosomiasis treatment.

7. Nutrition related knowledge and practices of hypertensive adults attending hypertensive clinics at day hospitals in the Cape Metropole

The aim of this study was to determine nutrition knowledge and dietary practices of hypertensive adults attending hypertensive clinics at Day Hospitals in the Cape Metropole. Ten Day Hospitals were randomly selected from a total of 31 Day Hospitals and the first participants attending the hypertension clinics per day were recruited. A total of 85 participants were evaluated. The weight, height, waist and hip circumference of each participant was measured, as well as their blood pressure. Knowledge of dietary intake was obtained by completing a questionnaire, during an interview with the patient. Knowledge regarding salt usage indicated that a large percentage (34.1 %) of participants believed that flavour enhancers like Aromat or Fondor could safely be used instead of table salt. Furthermore, 23.5% reported that tinned and smoked meat or fish have a low sodium (salt) content. Fruit and vegetables were perceived as having a positive effect on hypertension by 74.1 % of participants. However, only 15% of the group knew that the recommendation for their usage was five or more servings per day. Only 12.9% of participants in this study had a normal weight (body mass index (BMI) < 25), 25.9% were overweight (BMI 25 - 29.9) and 61.2% were obese (BMI ≥ 30); 84.7% recognized the association between obesity and hypertension. A large waist circumference (> 88cm in women; 102cm in men) was found in 61.2% of participants, however, only 18.2% of black men had such a measurement. Uncontrolled blood pressure readings (> 140/90mm Hg) were found in 61.2% of these patients at the hypertension clinics.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory instruments about 1 km3 of deep, glacial ice at the geographic South Pole. It uses 5160 photomultipliers to detect Cherenkov light emitted by charged relativistic particles. An unexpected light propagation effect observed by the experiment is an anisotropic attenuation, which is aligned with the local flow direction of the ice. We examine birefringent light propagation through the polycrystalline ice microstructure as a possible explanation for this effect. The predictions of a first-principles model developed for this purpose, in particular curved light trajectories resulting from asymmetric diffusion, provide a qualitatively good match to the main features of the data. This in turn allows us to deduce ice crystal properties. Since the wavelength of the detected light is short compared to the crystal size, these crystal properties include not only the crystal orientation fabric, but also the average crystal size and shape, as a function of depth. By adding small empirical corrections to this first-principles model, a quantitatively accurate description of the optical properties of the IceCube glacial ice is obtained. In this paper, we present the experimental signature of ice optical anisotropy observed in IceCube light-emitting diode (LED) calibration data, the theory and parameterization of the birefringence effect, the fitting procedures of these parameterizations to experimental data, and the inferred crystal properties.

11. Selective Intraportal Transplantation of DiI-marked Isolated Rat Hepatocytes

Transplantation of isolated hepatocytes is a promising alternative to orthotopic liver transplantation in experimental animal models with acute hepatic failure and hereditary enzyme defects. Conventional light microscopy identification of hepatocytes within recipient livers has been limited due to the inability to distinguish between donor and recipient liver cells. In this study, we labeled hepatocytes intracellularly with the fluorescent dye DiI-18 prior to selective intraportal or intrasplenic transplantation. Syngeneic LEW rat hepatocytes were isolated and 2 × 10 7 fluorescence-labeled cells were transplanted by intraportal infusion selectively into 2/3 of the recipient liver lobules to avoid lethal portal hypertension. Rats were sacrificed on postop days 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 40. Histological examination was performed using light and fluorescence microscopy counterstained by light green dye. The quantity of transplanted hepatocytes residing within the recipient liver was determined by FACS analysis after enzymatic digestion of the recipient liver lobules. Engrafted hepatocytes were identified in the periportal regions of transplanted liver lobules. The stained hepatocytes were retrieved up to 20 days postop using fluorescent microscopy. Using FACS analysis the number of labeled hepatocytes was found to diminish over time following transplantation from 2.1% on postop day 1 to 0.5% on day 10. Labeled hepatocytes transplanted into the spleen were retrieved in clusters up to 20 days postop (the last day of observation). Furthermore, the migration of labeled hepatocytes from spleen to liver parenchyma was observed following intrasplenic transplantation. However, after selective intraportal transplantation, only fluorescent debris was found in splenic and pulmonary tissue upon examination of various organs. This article describes the method of fluorescent labeling of rat hepatocytes and reports the feasibility and limitations of using DiI-18 as a marker.

12. Allogeneic Hepatocyte Transplantation Using FK 506

Hepatocyte transplantation is an intriguing alternative to orthotopic liver transplantation. While engraftment of syngeneic hepatocytes can be achieved with relative ease, engraftment of allogeneic hepatocytes has been far more complicated. We used FK 506 (Tacrolimus), a novel and highly efficient immunosuppressant, which has been reported to augment liver regeneration in rats. Recipients of isolated syngeneic (LEW) and allogeneic (Wistar F.) rat hepatocytes (major histocompatibility barrier) recieved different immunosuppressive regiments with FK 506 or Cyclosporine A (CsA). Mature syngeneic hepatocytes could be retrieved up to post op day 300 with the lowest number of hepatocytes on post op day 20. Following allogeneic transplantation, no mature hepatocytes could be identified after post op day 10, though ductular like structures within the spleen were found in FK 506 but not CsA-treated animals. The epithelial cells of ductular like structures exhibit cytological features of CK-19 positive cells. Our results suggest that under CsA or FK 506 immunosuppression long-term survival of mature allogeneic hepatocytes within the spleen cannot be achieved across a major histocompatibility barrier though FK 506 allows engraftment of allogeneic donor type ductular cells. 13. Transforming Experiential Learning in the Honors Interpersonal Communication Course: Interpersonal Enrichment Journeys During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

Drawing upon my own experience as an educator, I describe and reflect upon my experiential learning-pedagogical process of transforming my fall 2020 Zoom-based honors interpersonal communication course in which my students traversed through a series of experiential learning activities called Interpersonal Enrichment Journeys. Quantitative and written data revealed that students achieved desired learning outcomes and strengthened much-needed interpersonal connections despite the circumstances and stressors induced by the pandemic. Interpersonal Enrichment Journeys can be replicated to maximize the features of quality online courses identified by Kaufman and Vallade (2022), such as helping students develop personal connections in a positive learning climate and ensuring that “students are getting the information and interaction they need to be successful” (p. 153).

Le champignon Botrytis a toujours joué un rôle extrêmement néfaste en ce qui concerne la greffe de la vigne. Chaque année, dans tous les pays producteurs de vins, les pertes dues au Botrytis sont considérables ainsi que leurs conséquences sur la rentabilité de ces greffes. Les infections causées par ce champignon se font à partir du greffon et du porte-greffe. Toutes les parties aériennes des ceps (que ce soit dans les vignes à fruits ou bien dans les vignes-mères productrices de porte-greffes) sont exposées, en automne, à une attaque infectieuse de ce champignon. Peu après les vendanges, sous la mauvaise influence du Botrytis apparaît déjà dans la région de la greffe le rejet de certaines variétés de greffons. Cette influence se manifeste par un éclaircissement de la couleur de l'écorce ; dans de telles zones, qui prennent une couleur blanche, le Botrytis prolifère dans les tissus de l'écorce. Il apparaît, au milieu de ces zones claires, des formations de couleur sombre émergeant de l'écorce, d'une taille de 1 à 2 mm pouvant atteindre 1 cm et plus. Ce stade d'évolution du Botrytis porte le nom de sclérote. Mais, en l'absence de ces lésions visibles à l'oeil nu, il est à peu près certain que le bois destiné à la greffe est infecté par le Botrytis.

Measurements of nutrient and suspended matter concentrations and loads entering and leaving the Castanhão reservoir during the rainy season were carried out to assess the influence of this large reservoir on land-sea fluvial transport in the ephemeral Jaguaribe river basin. Spatial variation indicated statistically significant attenuation of concentrations only for total phosphorous and suspended matter across the reservoir. Strong retention of nutrients and suspended matter loads by the reservoir was observed with average trapping efficiency of 89% for dissolved silicon, 98% of soluble reactive phosphorus, 71% for ammonium, 87% for total nitrogen, 98% for total phosphorus and 97% for suspended matter compared to the reservoir inflow. The dam operational procedure defined by the ephemeral conditions of the river reduced water releases compared to reservoir inflow and induced strong retention of nutrient and suspended matter loads within the reservoir when fluvial transfer occurs in this semiarid watershed.

We present a catalog of likely astrophysical neutrino track-like events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. IceCube began reporting likely astrophysical neutrinos in 2016, and this system was updated in 2019. The catalog presented here includes events that were reported in real time since 2019, as well as events identified in archival data samples starting from 2011. We report 275 neutrino events from two selection channels as the first entries in the catalog, the IceCube Event Catalog of Alert Tracks, which will see ongoing extensions with additional alerts. The Gold and Bronze alert channels respectively provide neutrino candidates with a 50% and 30% probability of being astrophysical, on average assuming an astrophysical neutrino power-law energy spectral index of 2.19. For each neutrino alert, we provide the reconstructed energy, direction, false-alarm rate, probability of being astrophysical in origin, and likelihood contours describing the spatial uncertainty in the alert's reconstructed location. We also investigate a directional correlation of these neutrino events with gamma-ray and X-ray catalogs, including 4FGL, 3HWC, TeVCat, and Swift-BAT.

The LIGO/Virgo collaboration published the catalogs GWTC-1, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3 containing candidate gravitational-wave (GW) events detected during its runs O1, O2, and O3. These GW events can be possible sites of neutrino emission. In this paper, we present a search for neutrino counterparts of 90 GW candidates using IceCube DeepCore, the low-energy infill array of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The search is conducted using an unbinned maximum likelihood method, within a time window of 1000 s, and uses the spatial and timing information from the GW events. The neutrinos used for the search have energies ranging from a few GeV to several tens of TeV. We do not find any significant emission of neutrinos, and place upper limits on the flux and the isotropic-equivalent energy emitted in low-energy neutrinos. We also conduct a binomial test to search for source populations potentially contributing to neutrino emission. We report a nondetection of a significant neutrino-source population with this test.

Climate change affects timing of reproduction in many bird species, but few studies have investigated its influence on annual reproductive output. Here, we assess changes in the annual production of young by female breeders in 201 populations of 104 bird species (N = 745,962 clutches) covering all continents between 1970 and 2019. Overall, average offspring production has declined in recent decades, but considerable differences were found among species and populations. A total of 56.7% of populations showed a declining trend in offspring production (significant in 17.4%), whereas 43.3% exhibited an increase (significant in 10.4%). The results show that climatic changes affect offspring production through compounded effects on ecological and life history traits of species. Migratory and larger-bodied species experienced reduced offspring production with increasing temperatures during the chick-rearing period, whereas smaller-bodied, sedentary species tended to produce more offspring. Likewise, multi-brooded species showed increased breeding success with increasing temperatures, whereas rising temperatures were unrelated to reproductive success in single-brooded species. Although EGFR mutant–selective tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) are clinically effective, acquired resistance can occur by reactivating ERK. We show using in vitro models of acquired EGFR TKI resistance with a mesenchymal phenotype that CXCR7, an atypical G protein-coupled receptor, activates the MAPK–ERK pathway via β-arrestin. Depletion of CXCR7 inhibited the MAPK pathway, significantly attenuated EGFR TKI resistance, and resulted in mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition. CXCR7 overexpression was essential in reactivation of ERK1/2 for the generation of EGFR TKI–resistant persister cells. Many patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring an EGFR kinase domain mutation, who progressed on EGFR inhibitors, demonstrated increased CXCR7 expression. These data suggest that CXCR7 inhibition could considerably delay and prevent the emergence of acquired EGFR TKI resistance in EGFR-mutant NSCLC.Significance:Increased expression of the chemokine receptor CXCR7 constitutes a mechanism of resistance to EGFR TKI in patients with non–small cell lung cancer through reactivation of ERK signaling.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment (CI) is highly prevalent in elderly asthmatics and is associated with worse asthma self-management (SM) and outcomes. CI may also explain why older adults may under-perceive asthma symptoms. We hypothesized that CI would be associated with low medication adherence and asthma symptom under-perception (ASP). We also hypothesized that ASP would mediate the relationship between CI and medication adherence. METHODS: Participants of this longitudinal cohort study were asthmatics (N=334) ≥60 years (51% Hispanic, 25% Black). Cognitive measures assessed general cognition, attention, processing speed, executive functioning, memory, and language. Measures of SM were self-reported and electronically measured adherence to controller medications. ASP was assessed for 6 weeks by participants entering estimates of peak expiratory flow (PEF) into a programmable peak flow meter, followed by PEF blows. Participants were blinded to actual PEF values. Percentage of time that participants were in the over-perception zone was calculated as an average. RESULTS: In regression analyses, those with impairments in memory and general cognition had lower odds ratios (OR) for self-reported non-adherence (OR: 0.96, 95% CI 0.93–0.98 & OR: 0.90, 95% CI 0.83–0.96, respectively). CI was not associated with electronically measured non-adherence or ASP. In structural equation modeling, while CI was associated with adherence (β=0.04, SE = 0.021, p=0.04), ASP did not mediate this relationship. CONCLUSIONS: While results confirmed the importance of cognition in asthma SM, these findings were not linked to ASP. Future analyses are needed to understand the role of confounding factors.

Although political violence has been perpetrated on behalf of a wide range of political ideologies, it is unclear whether there are systematic differences between ideologies in the use of violence to pursue a political cause. Prior research on this topic is scarce and mostly restricted to self-reported measures or less extreme forms of political aggression. Moreover, it has generally focused on respondents in Western countries and has been limited to either comparisons of the supporters of left-wing and right-wing causes or examinations of only Islamist extremism. In this research we address these gaps by comparing the use of political violence by left-wing, right-wing, and Islamist extremists in the United States and worldwide using two unique datasets that cover real-world examples of politically motivated, violent behaviors. Across both datasets, we find that radical acts perpetrated by individuals associated with left-wing causes are less likely to be violent. In the United States, we find no difference between the level of violence perpetrated by right-wing and Islamist extremists. However, differences in violence emerge on the global level, with Islamist extremists being more likely than right-wing extremists to engage in more violent acts.

Nickel is a siderophile and near-refractory element, making its isotopes a potential tool for tracing planetary accretion and differentiation. However, the origin of the Ni stable isotope difference between bulk silicate Earth (BSE) and chondrites remains enigmatic. To address this problem, we report high precision Ni stable isotope data of enstatite chondrites and achondrites that possess similar mass independent O and Ni isotope compositions like the Earth-Moon system. Bulk enstatite chondrites have δ60/58Ni values of 0.24 ± 0.08 ‰ (2 s.d., n = 13). Enstatite achondrites, including main-group aubrites, Shallowater and Itqiy, show relatively large δ60/58Ni variations, ranging from 0.03 ± 0.02 ‰ to 0.57 ± 0.04 ‰. This could reflect fractionations between sulfide and metal phases, as is evidenced by correlation between their S/Ni ratios and δ60/58Ni values. In enstatite achondrites, Ni is mainly hosted in metal and to a lesser extent in sulfides, so δ60/58Ni values in enstatite achondrites may represent the Ni isotopic values of the cores of their parent bodies. The overlapping δ60/58Ni values between bulk enstatite achondrites and enstatite chondrites indicate limited Ni stable isotope fractionation during core formation processes on reduced, sulfur-rich parent bodies. The Ni stable isotope gap between chondrites and the BSE could be possibly explained by chondrule-rich accretion model.

We present a measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum above 100 PeV using the part of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory that has a spacing of 750 m. An inflection of the spectrum is observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. These measurements are critical for furthering our understanding of the highest energy cosmic rays.

Abstract In 2011, the U.S. National Science Foundation created the Innovation Corps (I-Corps) program in an effort to explore ways to translate the results of the academic research the agency has funded into new products, processes, devices, or services and move them to the marketplace. The agency established a 3-tier structure to support the implementation of the I-Corps concept. Selected I-Corps teams consisting of the principal investigator, an entrepreneurial lead, and an industry mentor participate in a 7-week accelerated version of the Lean Launchpad methodology that was first developed by Steve Blank at Stanford University. Participating teams engage in talking to potential customers, partners, and competitors and address the challenges and the uncertainty of creating successful ventures. I-Corps sites were set up to promote selected aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems at the grantee institutions. I-Corps Regional Nodes were charged with recruiting I-Corps teams in a larger geographical area as well as stimulating a new culture of academic entrepreneurship in the institutions in their area of influence. This Topical Review describes the experiences and the impact of the New York City Regional Innovation Node, which is led by the City University of New York, in partnership with New York University and Columbia University. However, easy-to-use remote monitoring tools have been lacking, thereby preventing widespread adoption.Objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of remote foot temperature monitoring (RFTM) (Sirenâs Neurofabric⢠Diabetic socks) in addition to standard of care (SoC) versus SoC alone for early detection of DFU with diabetic neuropathy and a moderate to high risk of DFU.Methods: A payer perspective decision-tree analysis was conducted to compare expected DFU occurrence and subsequent amputation rates and costs between treatment strategies over one year. Inputs in the model were sourced from publicly available literature and relevant health technology assessments. One-way sensitivity analyses were performed for each model variable.Results: In the base-case scenario, RFTM plus SoC was a dominant strategy compared to SoC alone. RFTM plus SoC was associated with cost savings of $38,593 per additional ulcer avoided versus SoC alone, and $8027 per patient per year on average compared to SoC alone. These results were highly robust to one-way sensitivity analysis; all scenarios remained dominant if compliance was ⥠13%.Conclusion: RFTM is a cost-effective addition to SoC in patients with diabetic neuropathy at a moderate-to-high risk of DFU and subsequent amputation. Further, reduction in DFU and associated complications may result in improvements in the patientâs quality of life and mental health. Remote interventions are increasingly utilized in transplant medicine but have rarely been rigorously evaluated. We investigated a remote intervention targeting immunosuppressant management in pediatric lung transplant recipients. Patients were recruited from a larger multisite trial if they had a Medication Level Variability Index (MLVI) ≥ 2.0, indicating worrisome tacrolimus level fluctuation. The manualized intervention included 3 weekly phone calls and regular follow-up calls. A comparison group included patients who met enrollment criteria after the sub-protocol ended. Outcomes were defined before the intent-to-treat analysis. Feasibility was defined as ≥ 50% of participants completing the weekly calls. MLVI was compared pre- and 180 days post-enrollment and between intervention and comparison groups. Of 18 eligible patients, 15 enrolled. Seven additional patients served as the comparison. Seventy-five percent of participants completed ≥ 3 weekly calls; average time on protocol was 257.7 days. Average intervention group MLVI was significantly lower (indicating improved blood level stability) at 180 days post-enrollment (2.9 ± 1.29) compared to pre-enrollment (4.6 ± 2.10), p=0.02. At 180 days, MLVI decreased by 1.6 points in the intervention group, but increased by 0.6 in the comparison group (p=0.054). Participants successfully engaged in a long-term remote intervention, and their medication blood levels stabilized. NCT02266888.

High angular resolution electron backscatter diffraction has been used to quantify the local elastic field at the tip of mechanically loaded intragranular slip bands observed in situ in the ferrite grains of an age-hardened duplex stainless steel (Zeron 100). The surface elastic strain field was integrated to calculate in-plane and out-of-plane surface displacements. This allowed the elastic fields to be parameterised in a finite element analysis, which used the displacement field as the boundary conditions, to obtain the potential strain energy release rate (J-integral) and three-dimensional stress intensity factors (𝐾𝐼,𝐼𝐼,𝐼𝐼𝐼). This new analysis method is demonstrated by examining the elastic fields around the tip of an incipient slip band, an array of slip bands and the loading of a slip band. Direct measurement of the stress tensor in the grain identified the active slip systems with the highest Schmid factor. The stress intensity factors ahead of the slip band, measured under load, were directly affected by the magnitude of loading and the inclination angle of the slip band to the observed surface.

Although long‐term ecological stability is often discussed as a community attribute, it is typically investigated at the species level (e.g. density, biomass), or as a univariate metric (e.g. species diversity). To provide a more comprehensive assessment of long‐term community stability, we used a multivariate similarity approach that included all species and their relative abundances.We used data from 74 sites sampled annually from 2006 to 2017 to examine broad temporal and spatial patterns of change within rocky intertidal communities along the west coast of North America. We explored relationships between community change (inverse of stability) and the following potential drivers of change/stability: (a) marine heatwave events; (b) three attributes of biodiversity: richness, diversity and evenness and (c) presence of the mussel, Mytilus californianus, a dominant space holder and foundation species in this system.At a broad scale, we found an inverse relationship between community stability and elevated water temperatures. In addition, we found substantial differences in stability among regions, with lower stability in the south, which may provide a glimpse into the patterns expected with a changing climate. At the site level, community stability was linked to high species richness and, perhaps counterintuitively, to low evenness, which could be a consequence of the dominance of mussels in this system. Synthesis. Assessments of long‐term stability at the whole‐community level are rarely done but are key to a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of climate change. In communities structured around a spatially dominant species, long‐term stability can be linked to the stability of this ‘foundation species’, as well as to traditional predictors, such as species richness., In this study, long‐term monitoring data fromrocky shore communities were used to examine patterns of community stabilityand identify potential drivers of community change along a geographic gradient.Marine heat wave events were associated with high levels of community change,particularly in southern regions. The findings agreed with prior work linkingspecies diversity and community stability, and also identified a lesswell‐studied component of stability, species dominance, as important. Thispattern is likely due to the stabilizing effect of a foundation species —themussel, Mytilus californianus.

There is a growing interest in developing personalized treatment strategies for each cancer patient, especially those with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) which annually accounts for the majority of cancer related deaths in the US. Yet identifying the optimal NSCLC treatment strategy for each cancer patient is critical due to a multitude of mutations, some of which develop following initial therapy and can result in drug resistance. A key difficulty in developing personalized therapies in NSCLC is the lack of clinically relevant assay systems that are suitable to evaluate drug sensitivity using a minuscule amount of patient-derived material available following biopsies. Herein we leverage 3D printing to demonstrate a platform based on miniature microwells in agarose to culture cancer cell spheroids. The agarose wells were shaped by 3D printing molds with 1000 microwells with a U-shaped bottom. Three NSCLC cell lines (HCC4006, H1975 and A549) were used to demonstrate size uniformity, spheroid viability, biomarker expressions and drug response in 3D agarose microwells. Results show that our approach yielded spheroids of uniform size (coefficient of variation 83% after 1 week-culture). Studies using epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKIs) drugs gefitinib and osimertinib showed clinically relevant responses. Based on the physical features, cell phenotypes, and responses to therapy of our spheroid models, we conclude that our platform is suitable for in vitro culture and drug evaluation, especially in cases when tumor sample is limited.

The effective practising of dentistry requires that dentists and dental technicians work hand in hand, having mutual respect for each other, while maintaining the highest standards in each of their respective disciplines. From a limited survey of dentists and dental technicians it seems that a small portion of our profession have misinterpreted the concept of “hand in hand” to be one of gross perverse incentives, corruption, collusion and dishonesty. This article may come as a shock to some and a revelation of what is known to be true to others. The issues discussed have generally been kept as “Dental family secrets”, however, the authors believe that these practices need to be uncovered if we want to put an end to this behaviour.

Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the A ntares and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origins could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational-wave and neutrino emission processes.
