Abstract Background N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10) is involved in several cellular processes. NAT10 expression is essential for the promotion of mRNA translation and stability. In some situations, deregulation of NAT10 has been attributed to the development of multiple types of cancer. NAT10 is significantly upregulated in various gastrointestinal tumors, including esophageal, colorectal, pancreatic, and liver cancers, and is correlated with poor prognosis. Additionally, NAT10 expression contributes to chemotherapy resistance in both esophageal and colorectal cancers. Nevertheless, the role of NAT10 in gastric cancer (GC), a type of gastrointestinal tumor, is not fully understood. Methods Throughout this investigation, our team evaluated NAT10 expression levels in GC patient samples and databases available to the general public. Based on the knockdown and overexpression of NAT10, in vitro experiments were conducted to examine the effects of NAT10 on GC progression and resistance to chemotherapy. Results Our study demonstrated that GC tissues exhibit increased levels of NAT10. Downregulation of NAT10 decreased GC cell proliferation, migration, and invasiveness. Conversely, upregulation of NAT10 resulted in the opposite effect. Furthermore, NAT10 fosters the progression of GC cells by activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. NAT10 also promotes resistance to cisplatin chemotherapy. Conclusions Our findings indicated that expression of NAT10 promoted GC progression through activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. We investigated the effect of NAT10 on the viability of GC cells treated with different doses of cisplatin. The results showed that NAT10 expression could impact the effectiveness of chemotherapy resistance in GC. This implies that using NAT10 as a target may be a potential therapeutic strategy for treating GC.

Abstract Extensive studies on the morphological characteristics of the coccyx, using CT or MRI techniques, have been conducted in some European and Asian countries. However, research on coccyx morphology in China remains scarce. A total of 300 subjects, who underwent sacrococcygeal digital radiological scans at the third affiliated hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University between January 2022 and December 2023, were analyzed in this retrospective study. Modified coccyx morphology classification was applied. Imaging focused on the type of coccyx and the number of coccygeal segments. Abstract To determine whether relative anterior spinal overgrowth (RASO) occurs regardless of scoliosis segments and severity, and to explore the pattern of vertebral body height changes in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). A total of 125 AIS and 179 non-scoliotic adolescents were enrolled. The anterior vertebral body height (VBHa) and posterior vertebral body height (VBHp) were measured on lateral spine radiographs, and the VBHa/VBHp ratio was calculated. The ratios were compared between the two groups and across scoliosis segments in the AIS group. Abstract Background Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive hematological neoplasm. Little improvement in survival rates has been achieved over the past few decades. Necroptosis has relationship with certain types of malignancies outcomes. Here, we evaluated the diagnostic ability, prognostic capacity of necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) and the effect of their copy number variations (CNVs) in AML. Methods Necroptosis-related differentially expressed genes (NRDEGs) were identified after intersecting differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from the Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO) database with NRGs from GeneCards, the Molecular Signatures Database (MSigDB) and literatures. Machine learning was applied to obtain hub-NRDEGs. The expression levels of the hub-NRDEGs were validated in vitro. The mRNA-miRNA and mRNA-TF interaction networks with the hub-NRDEGs were screened using Cytoscape@. Single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) was utilized to calculate correlations between the hub-NRDEGs and immune cells. CNV analysis of the hub-NRDEGs was carried out on the TCGA-LAML datasets from the TCGA database. Kaplan–Meier (K-M) survival analyses were utilized to evaluate the prognostic values along with Cox model. Results Six hub-NRDEGs (SLC25A5, PARP1, CTSS, ZNF217, NFKB1, and PYGL) were obtained and their expression changes derived from CNVs in AML were visualized. In total, 65 mRNA-miRNA and 80 mRNA-TF interaction networks with hub-NRDEGs were screened. The ssGSEA result showed the expression of RAPR1 was inversely related to CD56dim natural killer cells and the expression of CTSS was positive related to Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in AML. The K-M results demonstrated that ZNF217 had significant difference in the duration of survival in AML patients. Cox regression models revealed that the hub-NRDEGs had better predictive power at year-1 and year-5. Conclusion These screened NRDEGs can be exploited as clinical prognostic predictions in AML patients, as well as potential biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic targeting.

Abstract Background Neuropathic pain resulting from spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with persistent hyperactivity of primary nociceptors. Anandamide (AEA) has been reported to modulate neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission through activation of cannabinoid type-1 receptors (CB1Rs) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). However, the role of AEA and these receptors in the hyperactivity of nociceptors after SCI remains unclear. Results In this study, we investigated the effects of AEA and its receptors on the hyperexcitability of mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons after SCI. Using a whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we found that the timing of SCI-induced hyperexcitability in nociceptors paralleled an increase in the endocannabinoid AEA content. The expression of TRPV1 and CB1R was also upregulated at different time points after SCI. High-dose extracellular administration of AEA increased the excitability of naive DRG neurons, leading to the transition from a rapidly accommodating (RA) hypoexcitable state to a highly excitable non-accommodating (NA) state. These AEA-induced transitions were facilitated by increased TRPV1 transcription. Pharmacological and Ca2+ imaging experiments revealed that AEA induced hyperexcitability in nociceptors after SCI via the AEA-TRPV1-Ca2+ pathway, whereas activation of CB1Rs reduced SCI-induced hyperexcitability and maintained cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyto) at low levels in the early stages of SCI. As the AEA and TRPV1 levels increased after SCI, adaptive neuroprotection transitioned to a maladaptive hyperactive state, leading to sustained pain. Conclusions Taken together, this study provides new insights into how endocannabinoids regulate nociceptor activity after SCI, offering potential targets for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Abstract The correlation between the Cobb angle and the sagittal spinal curvature (SSC) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has been reported in some previous studies, but few studies have reported on the relation of coronal wedge deformity (CWD) with sagittal curvature. This study aims to investigate the correlation between CWD and SSC in AIS patients. A retrospective analysis was conducted in 122 AIS patients treated at our hospital from January 2018 to November 2023. Correlation analysis was performed on the Cobb angle, total wedge angle(TW), apical vertebral wedge angle (APW), upper end-vertebral wedge angle (UW), lower end-vertebral wedge angle (LW), total affected structures, average wedge angle(AW), total vertebral wedge angle (TVW), average vertebral wedge angle (AVW), Vertebral Wedge Angle ratio (VWR), total disc wedge angle (TDW), average disc wedge angle (ADW), and disc wedge angle ratio (DWR). Furthermore, out of all cases which underwent lateral spinal radiographs, a correlation analysis between thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL) and CWD was carried out on 102 patients. The Cobb angle exhibited a significant positive correlation with multiple CWD parameters (P 0.05). In mild and moderate AIS patients, CWD parameters were positively correlated with the Cobb angle and negatively correlated with thoracic SSC. This may indicate that it’s necessary to correct sagittal thoracic curvature when rectifying scoliosis in clinic. This research would not only provide new insights for clinical practice but also offer important evidence for early diagnosis and intervention.

Nitrogen deficiency is a key constraint on crop yield. Cassava, the world’s sixth-largest food crop and a crucial source of feed and industrial materials, can thrive in marginal soils, yet its yield is still significantly affected by limited nitrogen availability. Investigating cassava’s response mechanisms to nitrogen scarcity is therefore essential for advancing molecular breeding and identifying nitrogen-efficient varieties. This research undertook a comprehensive analysis of cassava seedlings’ physiological, gene expression, and metabolite responses under low nitrogen stress. Findings revealed that nitrogen deficiency drastically suppressed seedling growth, significantly reduced nitrate and ammonium transport to aerial parts, and led to a marked increase in carbohydrate, reactive oxygen species, and ammonium ion levels in the leaves. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses further demonstrated notable alterations in genes and metabolites linked to carbon and nitrogen metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, and the purine metabolic pathway. Additionally, several transcription factors associated with cassava flavonoid biosynthesis under nitrogen-deficient conditions were identified. Overall, this study offers fresh insights and valuable genetic resources for unraveling cassava’s adaptive mechanisms to nitrogen deprivation.

BackgroundPrevious research has indicated that long working hours are connected to a variety of health conditions, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, this association which has been observed in more population is limited. Our research is designed to evaluate the association between working hours, working type, and NAFLD.MethodsThe study comprised adults with complete details on working hours, working type, and NAFLD from the NHANES 1999-2014. We employed the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) to evaluate NAFLD and examined the relationship between working hours or working type and hepatic steatosis using weighted multiple-variable regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis. In addition, further subgroup analysis was performed based on sex, age, ratio of family income to poverty (PIR), education, and diabetes.ResultsLong working hours were significantly linked to an elevated risk of NAFLD (OR: 1.57, 95%CI: 1.21-2.05), even after controlling for confounding factors. RCS analysis suggested that there was no nonlinear relationship between them. When weekly working hours > 50, the likelihood of NAFLD among the population heightened to 57% and this risk increased to 99% in the female population. As for working type, increasing physical intensity of work was associated with higher NAFLD risk, but only heavy manual labor continued to show significance after adjustment (OR:1.39, 95%CI: 1.06-1.81). We observed that the relationship between heavy manual labor and NAFLD was more significant in the older and male populations.ConclusionOur results indicate that long working hours and engaging in heavy physical labor are independent risk factors for NAFLD. As working hours increase and individuals engage in heavy physical labor for extended periods, the risk of developing NAFLD significantly rises.

Multi-task learning (MTL) methods are widely applied in breast imaging for lesion area perception and classification to assist in breast cancer diagnosis and personalized treatment. A typical paradigm of MTL is the shared-backbone network architecture, which can lead to information sharing conflicts and result in the decline or even failure of the main task’s performance. Therefore, extracting richer lesion features and alleviating information-sharing conflicts has become a significant challenge for breast cancer classification. This study proposes a novel Multi-Feature Fusion Multi-Task (MFFMT) model to effectively address this issue. Firstly, in order to better capture the local and global feature relationships of lesion areas, a Contextual Lesion Enhancement Perception (CLEP) module is designed, which integrates channel attention mechanisms with detailed spatial positional information to extract more comprehensive lesion feature information. Secondly, a novel Multi-Feature Fusion (MFF) module is presented. The MFF module effectively extracts differential features that distinguish between lesion-specific characteristics and the semantic features used for tumor classification, and enhances the common feature information of them as well. Experimental results on two public breast ultrasound imaging datasets validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Additionally, a comprehensive study on the impact of various factors on the model’s performance is conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the working mechanism of the proposed framework.

As diversity becomes more widespread within teams, it is crucial to examine the dynamics of person-team fit and its effect on team creativity. By exploring the interplay between complementary fit and supplementary fit, this study aims to shed light on how these two dimensions of person-team fit contribute to the creative processes within teams based on the optimal distinctiveness theory (ODT). A two-wave field survey was conducted among 363 frontline employees within 113 teams in hotels. The regression results indicated a positive association between complementary fit and team creativity. Furthermore, the mediating role of information elaboration in this relationship was observed. Supplementary fit played a positive moderating effect between complementary fit and team creativity whereby teams with higher levels of complementary fit demonstrated higher levels of team creativity, particularly when supplementary fit was also high. Our findings thus provide significant implications for organizations seeking to enhance team creativity, that is, ensuring an inclusive climate that promotes the emergence of shared perceptions regarding both complementary and supplementary fit.

Zeolites have been widely used as catalysts, ion-exchangers, and adsorbents in chemical industries, detergent industry, steel industry, glass industry, ceramic industry, medical and health field, and environmental field, and recently applied in energy storage. Seed-assisted synthesis is a very effective approach in promoting the crystallization of zeolites. In some cases, the target zeolite cannot be formed in the absence of seed zeolite. In homologous seed-assisted synthesis, the structure of the seed zeolite is the same to that of the target zeolite, while the structure of the seed zeolite is different to that of the target zeolite in the heterologous seed-assisted synthesis. In this review, we briefly summarized the heterologous seed-assisted syntheses of zeolites and analyzed the structure-directing effect of heterologous seeds and surveyed the “common composite building units (CBUs) hypothesis” and the “common secondary building units (SBUs) hypothesis”. However, both hypotheses cannot explain all observations on the heterologous seed-assisted syntheses. Finally, we proposed that the formation of the target zeolite does need nuclei with the structure of target zeolite and the formation of the nuclei of the target zeolite can be promoted by either the undissolved seed crystals with the same CBUs or SBUs to the target zeolite or by the facilitated appropriate distribution of the specific building units due to the presence of the heterologous seed that does not have any common CBUs and SBUs with the target zeolite.

BackgroundResistance training is often a part of the routine training regimen for competitive swimmers. However, due to the variety of resistance training methodology, the results can be inconsistent and sometimes unsatisfactory. Clear recommendations are still lacking at present.Aims1) Quantify the impact of resistance training on swimmers’ upper limb maximum strength, front crawl performance and key technical parameters; 2) Find out the key technical parameters for improving front crawl performance—stroke rate or length; 3) Through subgroup analysis determine the best methodology of resistance training to enhance the front crawl.MethodsSystematic search in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Meta-analyses using the inverse-variance are performed to compare swimmers’ upper limb maximum strength, front crawl performance and key technical parameters in resistance training and habitual aquatic training. A subgroup analysis was performed to examine whether the results were affected by the methodology of resistance training.ResultsThirteen studies (267 competitive swimmers) met the inclusion criteria. The results of meta-analysis showed that resistance training significantly improved upper limbs maximum muscle strength, and 25, 50, 100, and 200 m front crawl performance in competitive swimmers. And improvements in swimming performance may simply resulted from resistance training increasing stroke rate rather than stroke length. In addition, the results of subgroup analysis showed that only concurrent resistance training (CRT) and power training (PT) ultimately improved swimming performance by increasing the maximum muscle strength of the upper limbs.ConclusionResistance training significantly enhances competitive swimmers’ upper limb strength and front crawl performance across various distances. The improvement in performance is likely attributed to an increased stroke rate rather than stroke length. Abstract Cardio-metabolic traits have been reported to be associated with the development of sepsis. It is, however, unclear whether these co-morbidities reflect causal associations, shared genetic heritability, or are confounded by environmental factors. We performed three analyses to explore the relationships between cardio-metabolic traits and sepsis. Mendelian randomization (MR) study to evaluate the causal effects of multiple cardio-metabolic traits on sepsis. Global genetic correlation analysis to explore the correlations between cardio-metabolic traits and sepsis. Local genetic correlation (GC) analysis to explore shared genetic heritability between cardio-metabolic traits and sepsis. Some loci were further examined for related genes responsible for the causal relationships. Abstract Previous study showed that higher expression of prolactin (PRL) was found in CRPC samples compared with hormone-naive prostate cancer (HNPC) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) samples. We further investigate the function of PRL in prostate cancer (PCa) and explored its downstream effects. We found heterogeneous expression of the PRLR in clinical prostate samples. The VCaP and 22Rv1 cells exhibited PRLR expression. Among the downstream proteins, STAT5B was the dominant subtype in clinical samples and cell lines. Human recombinant PRL stimulation of PCa cells with PRLR expression resulted in increased phosphorylation of STAT5B(pSTAT5B) and progression of PCa in vitro and in vivo, and STAT5B knockdown can suppress the malignant behavior of PCa. To understand the mechanism further, we performed Bioinformatic analysis, ChIP qPCR, and luciferase reporter gene assay. The results revealed that ARRB2 was the transcription target gene of STAT5B, and higher expression of ARRB2 was related to higher aggression and poorer prognosis of PCa. Additionally, Gene set enrichment analysis indicated that higher expression of ARRB2 was significantly enriched in the MAPK signaling pathway. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) demonstrated elevated pSTAT5B, ARRB2, and pERK1/2 expression levels in CRPC tissues compared to HNPC and BPH. Mechanically, ARRB2 enhanced the activation of the MAPK pathway by binding to ERK1/2, thereby promoting the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 (pERK1/2). In conclusion, our study demonstrated that PRL stimulation can promote the progression of PCa through STAT5B/ARRB2 pathway and activation of MAPK signaling, which can be suppressed by intervention targeting STAT5B. Blockade of the STAT5B can be a potential therapeutic target for PCa.

Abstract The correlation between scoliosis and sagittal curvature of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine have already been reported in previous studies. However, as a part of the spine, the change in coccygeal morphology in AIS patients has not yet been studied. In this study, a retrospective analysis was performed on 400 patients who were divided into a non-scoliotic group (206 patients) and an AIS group (194 patients). The Postacchini coccygeal radiological classification that was modified by Nathan was used to observe and compare the sagittal coccygeal morphology between the two groups. The results showed that the non-scoliotic group had the highest percentage (52.4%) of patients with type I and the lowest (3.4%) proportion of patients with type V; moreover, the AIS group had the highest percentage (69.1%) of patients with type I and the lowest (1.5%) proportion of patients with type V. The coccygeal morphology was significantly different between the non-scoliotic group and the AIS group (P = 0.001). No significant differences in coccygeal morphology were found between the males and females in the two groups (mild and moderate scoliosis and different segmental scoliosis). In addition, a significant correlation between coccygeal morphology and scoliosis (P = 0.035) was found. In conclusion, coccygeal morphology significantly differs between AIS patients and non-scoliotic adolescents. There was a smaller proportion of patients with a type I coccyx and a larger proportion of patients with a type II or type III coccyx in the AIS group than in the non-scoliotic group. In other words, the presence of a more pronounced coccygeal curve in AIS patients may be caused by an incorrect sitting position and an imbalance in the contraction of the pelvic muscles. It should be further studied whether correcting the sitting position and muscular imbalances could change coccygeal morphology and subsequently affect the development of AIS.

Background: Vascular intestinal disease is a major health concern that often requires emergency surgery in patients with intestinal obstruction, perforation, or bowel necrosis. We aimed to provide data on the incidence, prevalence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of vascular intestinal diseases from 1990 to 2021, thereby contributing to the development of health policies. Methods: Using standardized methods from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease study, we analyzed the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALYs of vascular intestinal disease from the perspectives of the sociodemographic index (SDI), regional, and country, along with the corresponding estimated annual percentage changes. Additionally, we used join-point regression to identify the key time points for disease burden changes. Results: In 2021, a total of 169,432 cases [95% uncertainty interval (UI): 155,127–185,189] of vascular intestinal disease were identified worldwide. The age-standardized incidence rate decreased from 18.81 (95% UI: 16.07–21.73) in 1990 to 15.98 (95% UI: 13.99–19.10) in 2021. In 2021, the age-standardized mortality rate was 1.12/100,000 people (95% UI: 1.00–1.21). Over the 32-year period, the global DALYs rate declined by 1.44 (95% Confidence Interval: −1.55 to −1.34). Within the five SDI regions, the high-middle SDI areas recorded the peak standardized mortality rates in 2021. Regionally, the greatest increase in incidence occurred in North Africa and the Middle East. Canada recorded the greatest national incidence rate [58.35 (95% UI: 50.05–67.37)] in 2021 among 204 countries, while Russia exhibited the highest related mortality [5.64/100,000 people (95% UI: 5.19–6.11)] and DALYs rate [101.48/100,000 people (95% UI: 93.83–109.66)]. Conclusions: Despite a global decline in the burden of vascular intestinal disease from 1990 to 2021, significant regional and national disparities persist and the disease burden among the elderly has increased.

Abstract Background Faced with the lack of physical activity caused by mandatory home isolation during special periods and patients' inconvenience in carrying out professionally supervised exercise, many home-based exercise programs have been developed. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effects of home-based exercise on measures of motor symptoms, quality of life and functional performance in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Methods We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, and searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane library, and Web of Science from their inception date to April 1, 2023. The quality of the literature was assessed using PEDro's quality scale. The data was pooled using R software. Results are presented as pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results A total of 20 studies involving 1885 PD patients were included. ObjectiveTo examine the dose–response relationship between specific types of exercise for alleviating Timed up and Go (TUG) in Parkinson’s disease PD.DesignSystematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.Data sourcesPubMed, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched from inception until February 5th, 2024.Study analysisData analysis was conducted using R software with the MBNMA package. However, no effective doses are found for Aerobic Exercise (AE), Balance Gait Training (BGT), Dance, and Treadmill Training (TT). Mind–body exercise (MBE) shows promise with an effective range of 130 to 750 METs-min/week and an optimal dose of 750 METs-min/week (MD: −2.822, 95% CI: −4.604 to −0.996). According to the GRADE system, the included studies’ overall quality of the evidence was identified moderate level.ConclusionThis study identifies specific exercise modalities and dosages that significantly enhance TUG performance in PD patients. AQE emerges as the most effective modality, with an optimal dosage of 1,500 METs-min/week. MBE shows significant benefits at lower dosages, catering to patients with varying exercise capacities. RT exhibits a nuanced “U-shaped” dose–response relationship, suggesting an optimal range balancing efficacy and the risk of overtraining. These findings advocate for tailored exercise programs in PD management, emphasizing personalized prescriptions to maximize outcomes.Systematic Review Registration: International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42024506968).

Abstract Objective To compare, rank and evaluate the 24 exercise types that improve postural instability in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods We searched the data in PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Cochrane library, and Web of Science from their inception date to January 23, 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that aimed at determining the effectiveness of physical activity interventions on postural instability in adults with PD. This review focused on different balance outcome categories: (a) balance test batteries (BBS); (b) static steady-state balance (sSSB); (c) dynamic steady-state balance (dSSB); (d) proactive balance (PB); (e) reactive balance (RB). Results Among 10,474 records, 199 studies (patients = 9523) were eligible for qualitative synthesis. The random-effects NMA model revealed that the following exercise training modalities had the highest p score of being best when compared with control group: body-weight support treadmill training (BWS_TT) for BBS (p score = 0.97; pooled standardised mean difference (95% CI): 1.56 (0.72 to 2.39)) and dSSB (1.00; 1.53 (1.07 to 2.00)), aquatic exercise (AQE) for sSSB (0.85; 0.94 (0.33 to 1.54)), Pilates for PB (0.95; 1.42 (0.59 to 2.26)). Balance and gait training with the external cue or attention (BGT_ECA) and robotic assisted gait balance (RA_GT) had similar superior effects in improving RB. The confidence in evidence was often low according to Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis. Conclusions There is low quality evidence that BWS_TT, AQE, Pilates, BGT_ECA and RA_GT are possibly the most effective treatments, pending outcome of interest, for adults with PD.

In the ocean, bubbles rarely appear alone and are often not evenly distributed, which makes it complicated to predict the effect of ocean bubbles on sound propagation. To solve this problem, researchers have tried to use approximations such as equivalent and multiple scattering models, but these approximations are accompanied by large errors. Therefore, we propose a semi-numerical and semi-analytical calculation method for underwater sound fields containing non-homogeneous bubbles in this paper. Based on the attenuation cross section and scattering cross section of a single bubble, the non-homogeneous medium is divided into multiple layers of uniform medium. Each layer of the bubble group is regarded as a whole, which can fully reflect the influence of bubble group vibration and scattering on sound wave propagation and is conducive to faster calculation of the sound field of non-homogeneous bubbly liquids. Compared with the classic coupling model, the calculation process of this method is simpler and faster, which solves the problem of fast calculation of sound fields in bubbly liquids and simulation of distributed bubble groups containing non-homogeneous distributed bubbles.

Studying the variability of the accretion disks of black holes and jets is important to identify their internal physical processes. In this Letter, we obtain the characteristic damping timescale of 34 blazars and 7 microquasars from the Fermi-Large Area Telescope and the XMM-Newton X-ray telescope, respectively. We found that the mass-scaled characteristic timescales, ranging from the microquasars of stellar-mass black holes to the blazars of supermassive black holes, exhibited a linear relationship with a slope of ∼0.57. Given the fact the damping timescales of the γ -ray in the blazars are associated with the jet, we propose that the timescales of the X-ray in these microquasars are also related to the jet. The mass-scaled damping timescale that we found was consistent with the radiation of the optical accretion disk. This can be attributed to the viscous timescale at the ultraviolet-emitting radii of the disk, which can affect the jet. Our study provides a new perspective on the origin of the region of radiation and the possible disk–jet connection based on time-domain analysis.

Abstract Feline calicivirus (FCV) and feline herpesvirus type I (FHV-1) are the most common viral pathogens responsible for cat respiratory diseases, and coinfection with these two pathogens is often found. In veterinary clinics, the main diagnostic methods for FCV and FHV-1 are test strips and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). However, the sensitivity of test strips are not sufficient, and PCR is time-consuming. Therefore, developing a rapid and high-performance clinical diagnostic test is imperative for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. Enzymatic recombinase amplification (ERA) is an automated isothermal nucleic acid amplification technique that maintains a constant temperature, and is both rapid and highly accurate. In this study, a dual ERA method was developed using the Exo probe for a differential detection of FCV and FHV-1. This dual ERA method demonstrated high performance with the detection limit of 101 copies for both viruses, and no cross-reactions with feline parvovirus virus and F81 cells. To test the utility of the method for clinical applications, 50 nasopharyngeal swabs from cats with respiratory symptoms were collected and tested. The positive rates of FCV and FHV-1 were 40% (20/50, 95% confidence interval [CI], 26.4 to 54.8%) and 14% (7/50, 95% CI, 5.8 to 26.7%), respectively. The rate of coinfection with FCV and FHV-1 was 10% (5/50, 95% CI, 3.3 to 21.8%). These results were in agreement with those found using quantitative real-time PCR. Therefore, this dual ERA method is a novel and efficient clinical diagnostic tool for FCV and FHV-1 detection.

Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), as a common endocrine disrupting chemicals, can induce toxicity to reproductive system. However, the mechanism remains to be explored. In our study, DEHP exposure induced testicular injury in rats. The high throughput transcriptional sequencing was performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the treatment and control groups. KEGG analysis revealed that DEGs were enriched in apoptosis, PPARα, and ER stress pathway. DEHP up-regulated the expression of PPARα, Bax, Bim, caspase-4. GRP78, PERK, p-PERK, eIF2α, p-eIF2α, ATF4 and CHOP. This view has also been confirmed in TM3 and TM4 cells. In vitro, after pre-treatment with GW6471 (an inhibitor of PPARα) or GSK (an inhibitor of PERK), the apoptosis was inhibited and mitochondrial dysfunction was improved. Moreover, the improvement of mitochondrial dysfunction decreased the expression of PERK pathway by using SS-31(a protective agent for mitochondrial function). Interestingly, ER stress promoted the accumulation of ROS by ERO1L (the downstream of CHOP during ER stress), and the ROS further aggravated the ER stress, thus forming a feedback loop during the apoptosis. In this process, a vicious cycle consisting of PERK, eIF2α, ATF4, CHOP, ERO1L, ROS was involved. Taken together, our results suggested that mitochondrial dysfunction and ER stress-ROS feedback loop caused by PPARα activation played a crucial role in DEHP-induced apoptosis. This work provides insight into the mechanism of DEHP-induced reproductive toxicity.

Background: The relationship between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and urological cancers has been identified in epidemiological and observational studies, while the causality remains uncertain. We examined whether IBD is causally associated with urological cancers in a Mendelian randomization (MR) study.Methods: The causal relationship between IBD, its main subtypes, and urological cancers was investigated using genome-wide association study data. To obtain more reliable conclusions, all outcomes were divided into training and validation sets. Eligible single-nucleotide polymorphisms were selected as instrumental variables based on MR analysis assumptions. The inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was employed as the main method along with four other complementary methods.Results: In this two-sample MR study, no genetic evidence for the causal effect of IBD on urological cancers was found in either the training or validation sets using the IVW method. Similarly, we did not observe any significant association between Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis and urological cancers. The results of the other methods are in accordance with those obtained using the IVW method.Conclusion: In this study, we confirmed that IBD is not a causal genetic risk factor for urological cancer in a European population.

We report a case of an exophytic benign prostatic hyperplasia presenting as a polycystic pelvic mass. A 69-year-old man presented with an incidental finding of a pelvic mass of over 18 years. Digital rectal examination revealed a mass on the right anterior rectal wall 8 cm from the anal opening. His current prostate-specific antigen was 3.187 ng/mL. Enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an occupancy in the right pelvis. A laparoscopic resection of the pelvic tumor was performed and pathologists identified it as an exophytic benign prostatic hyperplasia nodule. No significant recurrence was found at the 6-month follow-up.

Observational studies consistently disclose brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) as critical markers for early diagnosis of both brain disorders and cardiovascular diseases. However, it remains unclear about the shared genetic landscape between brain IDPs and the risk of brain disorders and cardiovascular diseases, restricting the applications of potential diagnostic techniques through brain IDPs. Here, we reported genetic correlations and putative causal relationships between 921 brain IDPs, 20 brain disorders and six cardiovascular diseases by leveraging their large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. Applications of Mendelian randomization (MR) identified significant putative causal effects of multiple region-specific brain IDPs in relation to the increased risks for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), major depressive disorder (MDD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). We also found brain IDPs specifically from temporal lobe as a putatively causal consequence of hypertension. The genome-wide colocalization analysis identified three genomic regions in which MDD, ASD and SCZ colocalized with the brain IDPs, and two novel SNPs to be associated with ASD, SCZ, and multiple brain IDPs. Furthermore, we identified a list of candidate genes involved in the shared genetics underlying pairs of brain IDPs and MDD, ASD, SCZ, ALS and hypertension. Our results provide novel insights into the genetic relationships between brain disorders and cardiovascular diseases and brain IDP, which may server as clues for using brain IDPs to predict risks of diseases.

The long-standing, unrestrained utilization of energy resources by China’s manufacturing sector has created irreversible obstacles to regional sustainable development. Consequently, the Chinese government has implemented a water resource tax policy in certain regions, with the aim of compelling manufacturing enterprises to adopt green and energy-saving innovations. This study used panel data from Chinese manufacturing companies listed on the A-share market from 2009 to 2020 and employed a double machine learning model to explore whether the water resource fee-to-tax reform can compel enterprises to enhance their tripartite green energy-saving innovation drive. These innovations consist of vision-driven and mission-driven green energy-saving technological innovations and green management energy-saving innovations. Following a quasi-natural experiment, our findings revealed the following: (1) The water resource fee-to-tax policy promoted the internal coupling coordination of the triple-driven system. (2) The policy compelled progress in mission-driven green energy-saving technological innovations and green energy-saving management innovations but hindered vision-driven green energy-saving technological innovations. (3) Within the internal systems of manufacturing enterprises, green energy-saving management innovations play a positive mediating role between the water resource fee-to-tax policy and the mission-driven green energy-saving technology innovation subsystem, but they lack a similar positive mediating mechanism for the vision-driven green energy-saving technology innovation subsystem. (4) The counterfactual framework verified that the mechanistic pathway “water resource fee-to-tax → green energy-saving management innovation → mission-driven/vision-driven green energy-saving technological innovation” could be further extended to other manufacturing enterprises not currently under policy compulsion. (5) In the interaction system between manufacturing enterprises and external markets, the development of marketization and financial technology positively regulated the promoting effect of the water resource fee-to-tax policy on mission-driven green energy-saving technological innovations and green energy-saving management innovations, but it did not have a similar effect on vision-driven green energy-saving technological innovations.

Numerous studies have reported a correlation between gut microbiota and influenza A virus (IAV) infection and disease severity. However, the causal relationship between these factors remains inadequately explored. This investigation aimed to assess the influence of gut microbiota on susceptibility to human infection with H7N9 avian IAV and the severity of influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 infection. A two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis was conducted, integrating our in-house genome-wide association study (GWAS) on H7N9 susceptibility and H1N1pdm09 severity with a metagenomics GWAS dataset from a Chinese population. Twelve and fifteen gut microbiotas were causally associated with H7N9 susceptibility or H1N1pdm09 severity, separately. Notably, Clostridium hylemonae and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii were negative associated with H7N9 susceptibility and H1N1pdm09 severity, respectively. Moreover, Streptococcus peroris and Streptococcus sanguinis were associated with H7N9 susceptibility, while Streptococcus parasanguini and Streptococcus suis were correlated with H1N1pdm09 severity. These results provide novel insights into the interplay between gut microbiota and IAV pathogenesis as well as new clues for mechanism research regarding therapeutic interventions or IAV infections. Future studies should concentrate on clarifying the regulatory mechanisms of gut microbiota and developing efficacious approaches to reduce the incidence of IAV infections, which could improve strategy for preventing and treating IAV infection worldwide.

In real-world applications, feature selection is crucial for enhancing the performance of data science and machine learning models. Typically, feature selection is a complex combinatorial optimization problem and a multi-objective optimization problem. Its primary goals are to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and enhance the performance of machine learning algorithms. The selection of features in high-dimensional datasets is challenging due to the intricate relationships between features, which pose significant challenges to the performance and computational efficiency of algorithms. This paper introduces a Knowledge-Guided Competitive Co-Evolutionary Algorithm (KCCEA) for feature selection, especially for high-dimensional features. In the proposed algorithm, we make improvements to the foundational dominance-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm in two aspects. First, the use of feature correlation as knowledge to guide evolution enhances the search speed and quality of traditional multi-objective evolutionary algorithm solutions. Second, a dynamically allocated competitive–cooperative evolutionary mechanism is proposed, integrating the improved knowledge-guided evolution with traditional evolutionary algorithms, further enhancing the search efficiency and diversity of solutions. Through rigorous empirical testing on various datasets, the KCCEA demonstrates superior performance compared to basic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, providing effective solutions to multi-objective feature selection problems while enhancing the interpretability and effectiveness of prediction models.

With the rapid development of the emerging intelligent, flexible, transparent, and wearable electronic devices, such as quantum-dot-based micro light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs), thin-film transistors (TFTs), and flexible sensors, numerous pixel-level printing technologies have emerged. Among them, inkjet printing has proven to be a useful and effective tool for consistently printing micron-level ink droplets, for instance, smaller than 50 µm, onto wearable electronic devices. However, quickly and accurately determining the printing quality, which is significant for the electronic device performance, is challenging due to the large quantity and micron size of ink droplets. Therefore, leveraging existing image processing algorithms, we have developed an effective method and software for quickly detecting the morphology of printed inks served in inkjet printing. This method is based on the edge detection technology. We believe this method can greatly meet the increasing demands for quick evaluation of print quality in inkjet printing.

Abstract Background Observational studies have revealed that type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with an increased risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, whether the two diseases share a genetic basis and whether the relationship is causal remain unclear. It is also unclear as to whether these relationships differ between ethnic groups. Methods By leveraging large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics of T2D (European-based: N case = 21,926, N control = 342,747; East Asian-based: N case = 36,614, N control = 155,150) and PAD (European-based: N case = 5673, N control = 359,551; East Asian-based: N case = 3593, N control = 208,860), we explored the genetic correlation and putative causal relationship between T2D and PAD in both Europeans and East Asians using linkage disequilibrium score regression and seven Mendelian randomization (MR) models. We also performed multi-trait analysis of GWAS and two gene-based analyses to reveal candidate variants and risk genes involved in the shared genetic basis between T2D and PAD. Results We observed a strong genetic correlation (r g ) between T2D and PAD in both Europeans (r g = 0.51; p-value = 9.34 × 10−15) and East Asians (r g = 0.46; p-value = 1.67 × 10−12). The MR analyses provided consistent evidence for a causal effect of T2D on PAD in both ethnicities (odds ratio [OR] = 1.05 to 1.28 for Europeans and 1.15 to 1.27 for East Asians) but not PAD on T2D. This putative causal effect was not influenced by total cholesterol, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, or smoking initiation according to multivariable MR analysis, and the genetic overlap between T2D and PAD was further explored employing an independent European sample through polygenic risk score regression. Multi-trait analysis of GWAS revealed two novel European-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (rs927742 and rs1734409) associated with the shared genetic basis of T2D and PAD. Gene-based analyses consistently identified one gene ANKFY1 and gene-gene interactions (e.g., STARD10 [European-specific] to AP3S2 [East Asian-specific]; KCNJ11 [European-specific] to KCNQ1 [East Asian-specific]) associated with the trans-ethnic genetic overlap between T2D and PAD, reflecting a common genetic basis for the co-occurrence of T2D and PAD in both Europeans and East Asians. Conclusions Our study provides the first evidence for a genetically causal effect of T2D on PAD in both Europeans and East Asians. Several candidate variants and risk genes were identified as being associated with this genetic overlap. Our findings emphasize the importance of monitoring PAD status in T2D patients and suggest new genetic biomarkers for screening PAD risk among patients with T2D.

A total of five ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)-strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) columns and one RC column were built and subjected to eccentric compression testing to examine the force performance of UHPC-strengthened eccentrically compressed plain RC columns. This experimental study examined the crack progression, the damage morphology, the deformation ability, the maximum load-carrying capacity, and the ductile properties of the eccentrically compressed columns. It also investigated the impacts of eccentricity, the reinforcement thickness, and the addition of steel fibers on the effectiveness of reinforcement. The cracking load, peak load, and ductility coefficient of the UHPC-reinforced specimens were increased by 100.28%, 172.30%, and 56.30%, respectively, compared with the RC column at an initial eccentricity of 50 mm. As the eccentricity distance increased, the bearing capacity of the UHPC eccentrically compressed specimens decreased, and the deformation capacity increased. Increasing the steel fiber dosage within the appropriate range decreased the crack width of the specimen. The addition of 2% steel fiber resulted in a 24.8% increase in cracking load, an 8.96% increase in peak load, and a 2.60% increase in ductility coefficient compared to the addition of 1% steel fiber. However, the reinforcing effect of UHPC was weakened under high eccentric pressures. Based on the theory of concrete structure and mechanical principles, the formula for calculating the compressive bearing capacity of RC columns strengthened with high-performance concrete was proposed. The results of calculating the positive section bearing capacity of eccentrically compressed RC columns reinforced with high-performance concrete are in good agreement with the test values. The results of this paper provide an experimental basis and theoretical foundation for the cross-sectional design of UHPC eccentrically compressed columns.

Clonorchis sinensis is a zoonotic parasite associated with liver fibrosis and cholangiocarcinoma development. The role of toll-like receptors (TLRs) in C. sinensis infection has not yet been fully elucidated. Here, the TLR3 signaling pathway, cytokine expression and liver fibrosis were examined in C. sinensis-infected wildtype (WT) and TLR3-/- mice. Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (Poly (I:C)) was used to treat C. sinensis infections. The results showed that TLR3 deficiency caused severe clonorchiasis with increased parasite burden, exacerbated proinflammatory cytokine expression and liver lesions, promoted the TGF-β1/Smad2/3 pathway and myofibroblast activation, exacerbated liver fibrosis (compared to WT mice). Poly (I:C) intervention increased the body weight, decreased mouse mortality and parasite burden, reduced liver inflammation, and alleviated C. sinensis-induced liver fibrosis. Furthermore, C. sinensis extracellular vesicles (CsEVs) promote the production of IL-6, TNF in WT biliary epithelial cells (BECs) via p38/ERK pathway, compared with control group, while TLR3 deletion induced much higher levels of IL-6 and TNF in TLR3-/- BECs than that in WT BECs. Taken together, TLR3 inhibit IL-6 and TNF production via p38/ERK signaling pathway, a phenomenon that resulted in the alleviation of C. sinensis-induced liver fibrosis. Poly (I:C) is a potential treatment for clonorchiasis.

The Internet contains a wealth of public opinion on food safety, including views on food adulteration, food-borne diseases, agricultural pollution, irregular food distribution, and food production issues. To systematically collect and analyze public opinion on food safety in Greater China, we developed IFoodCloud, which automatically collects data from more than 3,100 public sources. Meanwhile, we constructed sentiment classification models using multiple lexicon-based and machine learning-based algorithms integrated with IFoodCloud that provide an unprecedented rapid means of understanding the public sentiment toward specific food safety incidents. Our best model’s F1 score achieved 0.9737, demonstrating its great predictive ability and robustness. Using IFoodCloud, we analyzed public sentiment on food safety in Greater China and the changing trend of public opinion at the early stage of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease pandemic, demonstrating the potential of big data and machine learning for promoting risk communication and decision-making.

Aiming at the engineering limitations of traditional ship vibration online monitoring and noise prediction methods, this paper proposes a method for online monitoring and underwater radiation noise prediction of cabin structures’ vibration and noise under hybrid excitation of sound and force. The method first constructs the condition test model; based on OTPA technology, the “acoustic-vibration” transfer function between sound and vibration monitoring points in the cabin and the “acoustic/vibration-acoustic” transmission network inside and outside the cabin structure are obtained. Secondly, based on the “acoustic-vibration” transfer function, the online vibration and sound monitoring data are decoupled and processed to obtain the modified vibration and sound monitoring data. Finally, the near-field radiation noise on the conformal hologram surface outside the cabin is predicted based on the “acoustic/vibration-acoustic” transmission network, and the far-field radiation noise of the cabin structure is predicted by the wave superposition method. In this paper, the contribution law of external radiation noise and the coupling characteristics of the monitoring information under the hybrid excitation of sound and force are analyzed theoretically, and the decoupling method of coupling information is also studied. This method makes up for the problem of missing underwater radiation noise caused by sound excitation in traditional vibration monitoring, and it can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of underwater radiation noise. The effectiveness of the method is further verified by the tank model experiments.

Abstract Objective To parallelly compare the applicability of the radius, exophytic/endophytic, nearness, anterior/posterior, location nephrometry score (R.E.N.A.L.), the Preoperative Aspects and Dimensions Used for an Anatomical (PADUA), and the centrality index (C‐index) scoring systems in predicting clinical outcomes after partial nephrectomy (PN). Methods We searched EMBASE, PubMed, Ovid, and Web of Science to perform a meta‐analysis examining the correlation coefficients between three nephrometry scores (NSs) and warm ischemia time (WIT), estimated blood loss (EBL), operation time (OT), length of stay (LOS), and absolute change in eGFR (ACE) up to 25 January 2021. Results In total, 13 studies including 1496 patients met the criteria for further analysis. Overall, all scoring systems had statistically significant correlations with the WIT, EBL, OT, ACE and LOS and ACE, except for the correlation between PADUA and LOS (r = 0.16 [−0.00, 0.31], p > 0.05). Abstract Carfilzomib, a second-generation proteasome inhibitor, has significantly improved the survival rate of multiple myeloma (MM) patients, but its clinical application is still restricted by drug resistance and cardiotoxicity. Here, we identified a novel proteasome inhibitor, D395, and assessed its efficacy in treating MM as well as its cardiotoxicity at the preclinical level. The activities of purified and intracellular proteasomes were measured to determine the effect of D395 on the proteasome. CCK-8 and flow cytometry experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of D395 on cell growth and apoptosis. The effects of D395 and carfilzomib on serum enzyme activity, echocardiography features, cardiomyocyte morphology, and hERG channels were also compared. In our study, D395 was highly cytotoxic to MM cell lines and primary MM cells but not normal cells, and it was well tolerated in vivo. Similar to carfilzomib, D395 inhibited osteoclast differentiation in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, D395 exhibited lower cardiotoxicity than carfilzomib in all experiments. In conclusion, D395 is a novel irreversible proteasome inhibitor that has remarkable anti-MM activity and mild cardiotoxicity in vitro and in vivo.

The basidiomycete fungus Sporisorium scitamineum is the causative agent of sugarcane smut disease. Mating between two strains of the opposite mating type is essential for filamentous growth and infection in sugarcane plants. However, the mechanisms underlying mating and pathogenicity are still not well understood. In this work we used gene disruption to investigate the role of Ssubc2, the gene encoding a kinase regulator in S. scitamineum. Deletion of Ssubc2 did not alter the haploid cell morphology or growth rate in vitro or tolerance to stress, but mutants with both alleles deleted lost mating ability and infectivity. Deletion of one Ssubc2 allele in a pair with a wild-type strain resulted in impaired mating and reduced virulence. Transcriptome profiling revealed that about a third of genes underwent reprogramming in the wild types during mating. Although gene expression reprogramming occurred in the pairing of Ssubc2-null mutants, their transcriptomic profile differed significantly from that of the wild types, in which 625 genes differed from those present in the wild types that seemed to be among the required genes for a successful mating. These genes include those known to regulate mating and pathogenicity, such as components of the MAPK pathway and hgl1. Additionally, a total of 908 genes were differentially expressed in an out-of-control manner in the mutants. We conclude that SsUbc2 functions as a key factor to coordinate the reprogramming of gene expression at the global level and is essential for the transition from monokaryotic basidial growth to dikaryotic hyphal growth through mating.

The use of dielectric slab superstrate (DSS) is proposed for gain enhancement of dual-polarized patch antenna and the corresponding arrays. The DSS for a single antenna is investigated firstly to lay a solid foundation for the design of DSS for large arrays. The DSS is placed in front of the dual-polarized aperture-coupled patch antenna and is proved to be available for gain enhancement for both polarizations. The measured results show that the DSS has little effect on the impedance bandwidth but can increase the gain by 10.7 and 11.2 dB for the two ports, respectively. Different from the existing research work, the DSS used to enhance the gain for large arrays is discussed. A piecewise homogeneous DSS with slots is proposed and fabricated for $2 \times 2$ array with a measured peak gain of 18.3 and 18.4 dBi for two polarizations. The piecewise homogeneous DSS and source antenna array hold the advantages of high gain, large aperture efficiency and easy processability. The piecewise homogeneous DSSs for $4\times 4$ and $8\times 8$ array are also designed and the simulated results show that the DSS can be effective for larger arrays.

The study of wearable systems based on surface electromyography (sEMG) signals has attracted widespread attention and plays an important role in human–computer interaction, physiological state monitoring, and other fields. Traditional sEMG signal acquisition systems are primarily targeted at body parts that are not in line with daily wearing habits, such as the arms, legs, and face. In addition, some systems rely on wired connections, which impacts their flexibility and user-friendliness. This paper presents a novel wrist-worn system with four sEMG acquisition channels and a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) greater than 120 dB. The circuit has an overall gain of 2492 V/V and a bandwidth of 15~500 Hz. It is fabricated using flexible circuit technologies and is encapsulated in a soft skin-friendly silicone gel. The system acquires sEMG signals at a sampling rate of over 2000 Hz with a 16-bit resolution and transmits data to a smart device via low-power Bluetooth. Muscle fatigue detection and four-class gesture recognition experiments (accuracy greater than 95%) were conducted to validate its practicality. The system has potential applications in natural and intuitive human–computer interaction and physiological state monitoring.

To explore the feasibility of replacing natural hydraulic lime (NHL) with lime-metakaolin (L-MK) in the restoration of soil sites, the samples of L-MK-modified silty sand (hereinafter L-MK-modified soil) underwent 0, 5, 10, and 15 dry-wet cycles and were then tested for mass loss, unconfined compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength. Some samples were tested using XRD, TG and SEM microscopic tests to study the strength mechanism for L-MK- and NHL-modified soil. The results showed that the mass loss ratios of the L-MK- and NHL-modified soils after 15 dry-wet cycles were within 2%. The compressive and tensile strengths of the L-MK-modified soil decreased with more dry-wet cycles, but the tensile strength decreased sharply initially and then to be stable after five dry-wet cycles. The attenuation characteristics were different obviously for the failure mode of compressive and tensile strength and the unevenness of the specimen caused by dry-wet cycles. The compressive and tensile strengths of L-MK-modified soil were significantly higher than those of NHL-modified soil after the same dry-wet cycle, and the decreased range of compressive and tensile strength was smaller than that of NHL-modified soil. The strength formation and attenuation characteristics of L-MK-modified soil are closely related to the influence of dry-wet cycles on the hydration products (e.g., CSH and C4AH13) generated by hydration reaction. The mix proportion of 6% L + 4% MK can effectively replace 8% and 10% NHL to protect soil sites.

Recent advances in hand gesture recognition have produced more natural and intuitive methods of controlling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). However, in unknown and cluttered environments, UAV motion planning requires the assistance of hand gesture interaction in complex flight tasks, which remains a significant challenge. In this paper, a novel framework based on hand gesture interaction is proposed, to support efficient and robust UAV flight. A cascading structure, which includes Gaussian Native Bayes (GNB) and Random Forest (RF), was designed, to classify hand gestures based on the Six Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) inertial measurement units (IMUs) of the data glove. The hand gestures were mapped onto UAV’s flight commands, which corresponded to the direction of the UAV flight.The experimental results, which tested the 10 evaluated hand gestures, revealed the high accuracy of online hand gesture recognition under asynchronous detection (92%), and relatively low latency for interaction (average recognition time of 7.5 ms; average total time of 3 s).The average time of the UAV’s complex flight task was about 8 s shorter than that of the synchronous hand gesture detection and recognition. The proposed framework was validated as efficient and robust, with extensive benchmark comparisons in various complex real-world environments.

The quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) found in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a very interesting observational phenomenon implying an unknown physical mechanism around supermassive black holes. Several AGNs have been found to have QPO phenomena in the X-ray energy band. Long-duration X-ray observations were collected and reduced for six AGNs with a suspected QPO. The Gaussian process model celerite was used to fit the light curves and to search for the quasiperiodicity behavior. The power spectral density and parameter posterior distributions of each light curve were calculated with the optimal model. Of the six AGNs, only RE J1034+396 was found to have a QPO of about 3600 s. The other five sources do not show QPO modulation behavior. We propose that a hot spot on the accretion disk is a possible physical mechanism resulting in this quasiperiodic behavior of AGNs.

During the end-of-life (EOL) product recovery process, there are a series of combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) that should be efficiently solved. These COPs generally result from reverse logistics (RL) and remanufacturing, such as facility location and vehicle routing in RL, and scheduling, planning, and line balancing in remanufacturing. Each of the COPs in RL and remanufacturing has been reviewed; however, no review comprehensively discusses and summarizes the COPs in both. To fill the gap, a comprehensive review of the COPs in both RL and remanufacturing is given in this paper, in which typical COPs arising at the end of the product life cycle are discussed and analyzed for the first time. To better summarize these COPs, 160 papers published since 1992 are selected and categorized into three modules: facility location and vehicle routing in RL, scheduling in remanufacturing, and disassembly in remanufacturing. Finally, the existing research gaps are identified and some possible directions are described.
