The novel material class of high entropy oxides with their unique and unexpected physicochemical properties is a candidate for energy applications. Herein, it is reported for the first time about the physico‐ and (photo‐) electrochemical properties of ordered mesoporous (CoNiCuZnMg)Fe2O4 thin films synthesized by a soft‐templating and dip‐coating approach. The A‐site high entropy ferrites (HEF) are composed of periodically ordered mesopores building a highly accessible inorganic nanoarchitecture with large specific surface areas. The mesoporous spinel HEF thin films are found to be phase‐pure and crack‐free on the meso‐ and macroscale. The formation of the spinel structure hosting six distinct cations is verified by X‐ray‐based characterization techniques. Photoelectron spectroscopy gives insight into the chemical state of the implemented transition metals supporting the structural characterization data. Applied as photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, the HEFs are photostable over several hours but show only low photoconductivity owing to fast surface recombination, as evidenced by intensity‐modulated photocurrent spectroscopy. When applied as oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst, the HEF thin films possess overpotentials of 420 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 m KOH. The results imply that the increase of the compositional disorder enhances the electronic transport properties, which are beneficial for both energy applications.

To make photoelectrochemical water splitting with metal oxide absorbers an economically viable technology for the production of green hydrogen, further improvements of solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency as well as photoelectrode stability have to be accomplished. One step towards optimized photoelectrodes is nanostructuring of the metal oxide absorbers addressing the generally short minority charge carrier diffusion lengths. In this work, mesoporous CuFe2O4 (CFO) thin film photoanodes were prepared by a sol-gel chemistry-based dip-coating and soft-templating strategy. The mesoporous CFOs were fabricated with distinct pore morphologies in order to study the impact of pore ordering and surface structure on the photoelectrochemical properties. The degree of pore ordering and geometry was varied by using different structure-directing copolymer surfactants, which were poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic F-127), polyisobutylene-block-poly(ethyleneoxide) (PIB-PEO), and poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (Kraton liquid-PEO, KLE). The distinctly mesostructured CFO materials were characterised by means of scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron microscopies (TEM), grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The structural and electronic properties were correlated with the photoelectrochemical water and sulfite oxidation scans. The non-ordered, Pluronic F-127 templated CFO showed the highest photocurrent density of 0.2 mA/cm2 at 1.3 V vs. RHE for sulfite oxidation, but the least photocurrent density (1.5 µA/cm2) for water oxidation. This can be understood on the basis of the high surface area which promotes hole transfer to sulfite (a fast hole acceptor), but retards oxidation of water (a slow hole acceptor) due to electron-hole recombination at the defective surface. These results are confirmed by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS). These yield the lowest surface recombination rate for the ordered KLE-based mesoporous CFO thin films, which retain spherical pore shapes at the surface resulting in fewer surface defects and thus in the highest water oxidation activity. Vibrating Kelvin probe surface photovoltage spectroscopy (VKP-SPS) on CFO films in contact with aqueous NaIO4 solution confirms these results and further reveals the presence of a detrimental Schottky junction at the FTO-CFO interface. Lastly, the electronic band diagram of the CFO photoanodes was investigated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy providing electronic structure arguments about the photoelectrochemical reactions the material is capable of driving. Post-use XPS data suggest that the concentration of hydroxyl groups, oxygen vacancies and adsorbed water/oxygen has indeed changed during photoelectrochemical operation, however the chemical state of the surface metal cations remained unaffected.

For driving the (photo-) electrocatalytic water splitting reaction both efficient and photostable absorber materials and electrocatalysts are needed in order to make the technology economically competitive. The formation of the spinel structure hosting six distinct cations was verified by means of gracing incidence X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy accompanied with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Photoelectron spectroscopy gave insight into chemical state of the implemented transition metals supporting the structural characterization data. Analyzed as photoanode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, the HEFs showed only low photoconductivity owing to fast surface recombination as suggested by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy. When applied as oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst, the HEF thin films possess overpotentials of 420 mV vs. RHE at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH. The results imply that the increase of the configurational disorder within the spinel structure enhances the electronic transport properties. The evaluation of the energy band alignment by Mott-Schottky analysis allows for an estimation which redox reactions can be driven, showing that the materials are theoretically capable of promoting overall water splitting.

A series of polystyrene- and poly(methyl methacrylate)-dithioesters was subjected to aminolysis under ambient atmospheric conditions, i.e., in the presence of oxygen. Polymer disulfide coupling by oxidation occurred within tens of minutes and the yield of disulfide-coupled polymer increased with decreasing polymer molar mass. Oxidation of thiolates is usually an unwanted side reaction, here it is employed to obtain exclusively polymeric mixed disulfides through in situ aminolysis/functionalization in the presence of a thiol. The in situ aminolysis/functionalization in the presence of a disulfide, Ellman's reagent or polymer disulfide, resulted in the exclusive formation of polymer-dithionitrobenzoic acid, which can be further reacted with a thiol to exchange the terminal functionality, or block copolymer with dynamic disulfide linker, respectively.

The unsaturated bicyclic acetal levoglucosenyl methyl ether was readily obtained from sustainable feedstock (cellulose) and polymerized by cationic ring‐opening polymerization to produce a semicrystalline thermoplastic unsaturated polyacetal with relatively high apparent molar mass (up to ca. 36 kg mol−1) and decent dispersity (ca. 1.4). The double bonds along the chain can undergo hydrogenation and thiol–ene reactions as well as crosslinking, thus making this polyacetal potentially interesting as a reactive functional material., From crops to CROP: Cationic ring‐opening polymerization (CROP) of biomass‐derived levoglucosenyl methyl ether yields a semicrystalline thermoplastic unsaturated polyacetal. The double bonds can undergo hydrogenation and thiol–ene reactions as well as crosslinking, thus making this polyacetal potentially interesting as a reactive functional material.

Post‐polymerization modification provides an elegant way to introduce chemical functionalities onto macromolecules to produce tailor‐made materials with superior properties. This concept was adapted to well‐defined block copolymers of the poly(2‐oxazoline) family and demonstrated the large potential of these macromolecules as universal toolkit for numerous applications. Triblock copolymers with separated water‐soluble, alkyne‐ and alkene‐containing segments were synthesized and orthogonally modified with various low‐molecular weight functional molecules by copper(I)‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and thiol‐ene (TE) click reactions, respectively. Representative toolkit polymers were used for the synthesis of gold, iron oxide and silica nanoparticles., Polyoxazoline block copolymers offer a wide range of possibilities for application depending on their molecular structure and properties. This study introduces the huge potential of this polyoxazoline toolkit and demonstrates how tailor‐made toolkit polymers can be applied in representative systems.

This opinion article describes recent approaches to use the “biorefinery” concept to lower the carbon footprint of typical mass polymers, by replacing parts of the fossil monomers with similar or even the same monomer made from regrowing dendritic biomass. Herein, the new and green catalytic synthetic routes are for lactic acid (LA), isosorbide (IS), 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and p-xylene (pXL). Furthermore, the synthesis of two unconventional lignocellulosic biomass derivable monomers, i.e., α-methylene-γ-valerolactone (MeGVL) and levoglucosenol (LG), are presented. All those have the potential to enter in a cost-effective way, also the mass market and thereby recover lost areas for polymer materials. The differences of catalytic unit operations of the biorefinery are also discussed and the challenges that must be addressed along the synthesis path of each monomers.

The mechanism of the primary ammonium/tertiary amine-mediated ring-opening polymerization of γ-benzyl- l -glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (B l G-NCA) was investigated. Kinetic analyses revealed that the normal amine mechanism (NAM) together with a dormant-active chain end equilibrium were responsible for the controlled nature of this polymerization pathway, but that the polymerization also proceeded via the activated monomer mechanism (AMM). Mixtures of primary amines (1 equiv) and tertiary amines (0–1.5 equiv) were therefore tested to confirm the co-existence of the NAM and AMM and determine the limits for a controlled polymerization. For tertiary amine molar fractions smaller than 0.8 equiv, the reaction times were greatly reduced (compared to primary amine-initiated polymerization) without compromising the control of the reaction. Hence, the polymerization of NCA can proceed in a controlled manner even when the AMM contributes to the overall chain growth mechanism.

Near-ambient pressure XPS (NAP-XPS) is a less traditional form of XPS that allows samples to be analyzed at relatively high pressures, i.e., at 2500 Pa or greater. With NAP-XPS, one can analyze moderately volatile liquids, biological samples, porous materials, and/or polymeric materials that outgas significantly. In this submission, the authors show C 1s, O 1s, and survey NAP-XPS spectra from 1,4-polymyrcene. The C 1s and O 1s envelopes are fit with Gaussian–Lorentzian product, asymmetric Lorentzian, and Gaussian–Lorentzian sum functions. Water vapor and argon are used to control sample charging, and the corresponding signals from the gases are present in the survey spectra. The effect of background gas pressure on photoelectron attenuation is illustrated with a sample of polytetrafluoroethylene.

Macrocycles based on L-cystine were synthesized by ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and subsequently polymerized by entropy-driven ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ED-ROMP). Monomer conversion reached similar to 80% in equilibrium and the produced poly (ester-amine-disulfide-alkene)s exhibited apparent molar masses (M-w(app)) of up to 80 kDa and dispersities (D) of similar to 2. The polymers can be further functionalized with acid anhydrides and degraded by reductive cleavage of the main-chain disulfide.

This report describes the aggregation behavior of an ABC-type ampholytic block copolypeptide, poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(l-lysine)-block-poly(l-glutamate), in aqueous media in dependence of pH. Polypeptide secondary structures and self-assemblies are investigated by circular dichroism (CD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and NMR spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC), dynamic/static light scattering (DLS/SLS), and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The polymer chains tend to form vesicles when the hydrophobic polypeptide helix is located at the chain end (acidic pH) and are existing as single chains when it is located in the center and flanked by the two hydrophilic segments (basic pH). Precipitation occurs in the intermediate pH range due to polyion complexation of the charged polypeptide segments.

Silk protein–based materials show promise for application as biomaterials for tissue engineering. The simple and rapid photochemical modification of silk protein–based materials composed of either Bombyx mori silkworm silk or engineered spider silk proteins (eADF4(C16)) is reported. Radicals formed on the silk‐based materials initiate the polymerization of monomers (acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or allylamine) which functionalize the surface of the silk materials with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA), or poly(allylamine) (PAAm). To demonstrate potential applications of this type of modification, the polymer‐modified silks are mineralized. The PAA‐ and PMAA‐functionalized silks are mineralized with calcium carbonate, whereas the PAAm‐functionalized silks are mineralized with silica, both of which provide a coating on the materials that may be useful for bone tissue engineering, which will be the subject of future investigations. published

Block copolypeptoids comprising a thermosensitive, crystallizable poly(N-(n-propyl)glycine) block and a water-soluble poly(N-methylglycine) block, P70My (y = 23, 42, 76, 153, and 290), were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of the corresponding N-alkylglycine N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) and examined according to their thermo-induced aggregation and crystallization in water by turbidimetry, micro-differential scanning calorimetry (micro-DSC), cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC), and static light scattering (SLS). At a temperature above the cloud point temperature, the initially formed micellar aggregates started to crystallize and grow into larger complex assemblies of about 100–500 nm, exhibiting flower-like (P70M23), ellipsoidal (P70M42 and P70M72), or irregular shapes (P70M153 and P70M290).

Item does not contain fulltext The protein corona, which forms on the nanoparticle's surface in most biological media, determines the nanoparticle's physicochemical characteristics. The formation of the protein corona has a significant impact on the biodistribution and clearance of nanoparticles in vivo. Therefore, the ability to influence the formation of the protein corona is essential to most biomedical applications, including drug delivery and imaging. In this study, we investigate the protein adsorption on nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic radius of 30 nm and a coating of thermoresponsive poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) in serum. Using multiangle dynamic light scattering (DLS) we demonstrate that heating of the nanoparticles above their phase separation temperature induces the formation of agglomerates, with a hydrodynamic radius of 1 mum. In serum, noticeably stronger agglomeration occurs at lower temperatures compared to serum-free conditions. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) revealed a high packing density of agglomerates when serum was not present. In contrast, in the presence of serum, agglomerated nanoparticles were loosely packed, indicating that proteins are intercalated between them. Moreover, an increase in protein content is observed upon heating, confirming that protein adsorption is induced by the alteration of the surface during phase separation. After cooling and switching the surface back, most of the agglomerates were dissolved and the main fraction returned to the original size of approximately 30 nm as shown by asymmetrical flow-field flow fractionation (AF-FFF) and DLS. Furthermore, the amounts of adsorbed proteins are similar before and after heating the nanoparticles to above their phase-separation temperature. Overall, our results demonstrate that the thermoresponsivity of the polymer coating enables turning the corona formation on nanoparticles on and off in situ. As the local heating of body areas can be easily done in vivo, the thermoresponsive coating could potentially be used to induce the agglomeration of nanoparticles and proteins and the accumulation of nanoparticles in a targeted body region.

Bio-inspired V2O5–polymer hybrid films were prepared following a one-step self-organization procedure based on liquid crystal formation of organic and inorganic components. These materials were previously reported to exhibit advantageous mechanical properties, comparable to biomaterials, such as human bone and dentin. Here, we show that these hybrid films prepared via a fast and simple synthesis procedure have an additional function as an electrochromic material, exhibiting a long-term cycle stability under alternating potentials. The structures were found to remain intact without visible changes after more than hundred switching cycles and storing the devices for several weeks. Consequently, this multifunctional V2O5–polymer hybrid system shows great promise for various technical applications.

This review covers the recent advances in the emerging field of thermoresponsive polyamides or polymeric amides, i.e., poly(2-oxazoline)s, polypeptoids, and polypeptides, with a specific focus on structure–thermoresponsive property relationships, self-assembly, and applications.

Materials based on biodegradable polyesters, such as poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) or poly(butylene terephthalate-co-poly(alkylene glycol) terephthalate) (PBTAT), have potential application as pro-regenerative scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. Herein, the preparation of films composed of PBT or PBTAT and an engineered spider silk protein, (eADF4(C16)), that displays multiple carboxylic acid moieties capable of binding calcium ions and facilitating their biomineralization with calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate is reported. Human mesenchymal stem cells cultured on films mineralized with calcium phosphate show enhanced levels of alkaline phosphatase activity suggesting that such composites have potential use for bone tissue Engineering. published

In this contribution, we demonstrate the controlled synthesis of double hydrophilic block copolymers comprising a hydrophilic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) segment via the RAFT/MADIX process. The non-ionic segment is made up from either poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) or poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA), due to their favorable controllable solubility in water at room temperature. They were employed as macro-chain transfer agents (macro-CTAs) for the RAFT polymerization of four different 1-vinylimidazolium ionic liquid monomers possessing different alkyl substitutes and anions. The block copolymers of PNIPAAm-b-PIL are dual stimuli-responsive copolymers that can respond to the changes in temperature and ionic strength in aqueous solution. This special property facilitated a facile anion exchange of the PIL segment. In addition, one copolymer could successfully be employed as carbon precursor for the preparation of mesoporous graphitic nanostructures in the presence of metal salts.

A series of defined nanogels of 20–120 nm in diameter were synthesized by acid-catalyzed epoxid-opening polymerization based on glycerol in miniemulsion. Multifunctional alcohols were used as monomers and di- and triepoxides as crosslinking agents. The properties of these nanogels, i.e., size, degree of branching, viscosity, and swelling behavior, can be controlled by varying the functionalities of the monomers and crosslinkers. Inverse gated 13 C NMR indicated that the addition of monomer occurred at both ends of the opened epoxide ring of the crosslinkers. This feature led to higher degree of branching and consequently to a lower viscosity of the resulting nanogels. The formation of some cycles as a possible side reaction was evidenced by different particle sizes in dry (TEM) and swollen states (DLS in water).

In dilute aqueous solutions certain amphiphilic block copolymers self-assemble into vesicles that enclose a small pool of water with a membrane. Such polymersomes have promising applications ranging from targeted drug-delivery devices, to biosensors, and nanoreactors. Interactions between block copolymer membranes and their surroundings are important factors that determine their potential biomedical applications. Such interactions are influenced predominantly by the membrane surface. We review methods to functionalize block copolymer vesicle surfaces by chemical means with ligands such as antibodies, adhesion moieties, enzymes, carbohydrates and fluorophores. Furthermore, surface-functionalization can be achieved by self-assembly of polymers that carry ligands at their chain ends or in their hydrophilic blocks. While this review focuses on the strategies to functionalize vesicle surfaces, the applications realized by, and envisioned for, such functional polymersomes are also highlighted.

Contemporary polymer science requires, more than ever, simple and efficient chemical reactions for constructing complex macromolecular or supramolecular structures. The present feature article highlights our recent efforts to develop modular synthetic platforms in macromolecular synthesis. As examples, the macromolecular engineering possibilities of two “click” reactions (i) the copper-catalyzed cycloaddition of azides and terminal alkynes and (ii) the radical addition of mercaptans onto vinyl double bonds are discussed in detail herein.

Bio-inspired Laponite (clay)-liquid crystal (LC) polymer composite materials with high clay fractions (>80%) and a high level of orientation of the clay platelets, i.e. with structural features similar to the ones found in natural nacre, have been shown to exhibit a promising behavior in the context of reduced oxygen transmission. Key characteristics of these bio-inspired composite materials are their high inorganic content, high level of exfoliation and orientation of the clay platelets, and the use of a LC polymer forming the organic matrix in between the Laponite particles. Each single feature may be beneficial to increase the materials gas barrier property rendering this composite a promising system with advantageous barrier capacities. In this detailed study, Laponite/LC polymer composite coatings with different clay loadings were investigated regarding their oxygen transmission rate. The obtained gas barrier performance was linked to the quality, respective Laponite content and the underlying composite micro- and nanostructure of the coatings. Most efficient oxygen barrier properties were observed for composite coatings with 83% Laponite loading that exhibit a structure similar to sheet-like nacre. Further on, advantageous mechanical properties of these Laponite/LC polymer composites reported previously give rise to a multifunctional composite system. published

Polysarcosine (M-n = 3650-20 000 g mol(-1), D similar to 1.1) was synthesized from the air and moisture stable N-phenoxycarbonyl-N-methylglycine. Polymerization was achieved by in situ transformation of the urethane precursor into the corresponding N-methylglycine-N-carboxyanhydride, when in the presence of a non-nucleophilic tertiary amine base and a primary amine initiator.

Self-assembly of macromolecules is fundamental to life itself, and historically, these systems have been primitively mimicked by the development of amphiphilic systems, driven by the hydrophobic effect. Herein, we demonstrate that self-assembly of purely hydrophilic systems can be readily achieved with similar ease and success. We have synthesized double hydrophilic block copolymers from polysaccharides and poly(ethylene oxide) or poly(sarcosine) to yield high molar mass diblock copolymers through oxime chemistry. These hydrophilic materials can easily assemble into nanosized (5 μm) polymeric vesicles depending on concentration and diblock composition. Because of the solely hydrophilic nature of these materials, we expect them to be extraordinarily water permeable systems that would be well suited for use as cellular mimics.

Langmuir polymers films (LPFs) frequently form non-equilibrium states which are manifested in a decay of the surface pressure with time when the system is allowed to relax. Monitoring and manipulating the temporal evolution of these relaxations experimentally helps to shed light on the associated molecular reorganization processes. We present a systematic study based on different compression protocols and show how these reorganization processes impact the morphology of LPFs of poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG); visualized by means of atomic force microscopy. Upon continuous compression, a fibrillar morphology was formed with a surface decorated by squeezed-out islands. By contrast, stepwise compression promoted the formation of a fibrillar network with a bimodal distribution of fibril diameters, caused by merging of fibrils. Finally, isobaric compression induced in-plane compaction of the monolayer. We correlate these morphological observations with the kinetics of the corresponding relaxations, described best by a sum of two exponential functions with different time scales representing two molecular processes. We discuss the observed kinetics and the resulting morphologies in the context of nucleation and growth, characteristic for first-order phase transitions. Our results demonstrate that the preparation conditions of LPFs have tremendous impact on ordering of the molecules and hence various macroscopic properties of such films.

We describe the derivatization of uncross-linked and cross-linked layer-by-layer (LbL) assemblies of polyelectrolytes (polyallylamine hydrochloride and polyacrylic acid) with sulfydryl groups via Traut's reagent (2-iminothiolane). This thiolation was optimized with regards to temperature, concentration, and pH. The stability of the resulting -SH groups in the air was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This air oxidation has obvious implications for the use of thiol-ene reactions in materials chemistry, and there appears to be little on this topic in the literature. Three main S 2s signals were observed by XPS: at 231.5 eV (oxidized sulfur), 227.6 eV (thiol groups), and 225.4 eV (thiolate groups). Due to their rapid oxidation, we recommend that thiolated surfaces be used immediately after they are prepared. As driven by 254 nm UV light, thiol groups on polyelectrolyte multilayers react with 1,2-polybutadiene (PBd), and residual carbon-carbon double bonds on adsorbed PBd similarly react with another thiol. In the case of a fluorinated thiol, surfaces with high water contact angles (ca. 120°) are obtained. Modest exposures to light result in derivatization, while longer exposures damage the assemblies. Polyelectrolyte-thiol-PBd-thiol assemblies delaminate from their substrates when immersed for long periods of time in water. Surface silanization with an amino silane prevents this delamination and leads to stable assemblies. These assemblies withstand various stability tests. Techniques used to analyze the materials in this study include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle goniometry.

Polypeptides having secondary structures often undergo self-assembly which can extend over multiple length scales. Poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG), for example, folds into a-helices and forms physical organogels, whereas poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA at acidic pH) or poly(L-glutamate) (PLG at neutral/basic pH) do not form hydrogels. We explored the gelation of modified PBLG and investigated the deprotection of the carboxylic acid moieties in such gels to yield unique hydrogels. This article highlights the very recent advances in glycopolypeptide synthesis via NCA polymerization and first studies on stimuli-responsive solution behavior and self-assembling structures. Yet glycopolypeptides are almost exclusively considered as smart biofunctional materials for use in biomedical applications, for instance in targeted drug delivery, but also have high potential for usage as structural materials to fabricate bioinspired hierarchical structures.

Thiol-X chemistry has proven to be a valuable toolbox for modification of peptides, proteins, monomers, and polymers. Recently, this has become especially true for the modification of polypeptides (monomers or polymers), which has resulted in a plethora of novel polymers and materials. The polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of aluminium alkyls in toluene deviates from conventional kinetics. This results predominantly from the formation and precipitation of a co-ordinative polymer gel or network. Due to the lower reactivity and accessibility of the living chains in the gel, they are regarded as ’dormant’ and thus the concentration of active species decreases during polymerization. The network formation occurs via co-ordination of the living aluminate chain end group with in-chain ester carbonyl groups. Part of the chains are deactivated by a termination process but they are free of cyclic β-ketoesters which would result from the common ’back-biting’ reaction.

Helmut Schlaad Poly(2-oxazoline)s and related pseudopolypeptides (mostly N -substituted polypeptides, so-called polypeptoids) are emerging as advanced synthetic biomaterials because they are quite readily available, their chemical structures and physical properties can be precisely controlled and adjusted, and they have excellent biocompatibility. These materials were shown to have great potential for usage especially in biomedical and life science applications. In fact, hydrophilic poly(2-oxazoline)s are emerging to substitute poly(ethylene glycol), the “gold” standard in biomedical applications. Yet, however, only poly(2-ethyl2-oxazoline) has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – just as a food contact agent; currently the main limitation for wide-spread industrial research on poly(2-oxazoline) based biomaterials and therapeutics. The self-assembly of double-hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymers in water has been studied. Isothermal titration calorimetry, small-angle X-ray scattering, and analytical ultracentrifugation suggest that only single polymer chains are present in solution. In contrast, light scattering and transmission electron microscopy detect aggregates with radii of ca. 100 nm. Pulsed field gradient NMR spectroscopy confirms the presence of aggregates, although only 2% of the polymer chains undergo aggregation. Water uptake experiments indicate differences in the hydrophilicity of the two blocks, which is believed to be the origin of the unexpected aggregation behavior (in accordance with an earlier study by Ke et al. [Macromolecules 2009, 42, 5339-5344]). The data therefore suggest that even in double-hydrophilic block copolymers, differences in hydrophilicity are sufficient to drive polymer aggregation, a phenomenon that has largely been overlooked or ignored so far.

Association of tannic acid (TA) with structurally isomeric poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOX) has been examined at surfaces to understand the effect of different molecular arrangements in a polymer repeating unit of structural isomers on the construction and pH-stability of hydrogen-bonded multilayers. Films were fabricated using layer-by-layer (LbL) technique through hydrogen-bonding interactions primarily between carbonyl groups of neutral polymers and hydroxyl groups of TA molecules at pH 2. PIPOX and TA formed thinner and more stable films in the pH scale with a critical dissolution pH of 9 when compared to films of PNIPAM and TA with a critical pH of 8. The differences in the thickness and pH-stability were due to different conformational behavior of PNIPAM and PIPOX in water which affects the accessibility of carbonyl groups for participation in the hydrogen bonding and the number of binding sites between the polymer pairs. Addition of electrostatic interactions by introducing amino groups only at the PIPOX chain end shifted the critical dissolution pH to higher values and resulted in gradual dissolution of the films in a wide pH range of 9–12. Such films hold promise for use in biomedical field due to biocompatibility and lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior at near physiological temperature of PNIPAM and PIPOX together with the pH-response of the hydrogen-bonded films.

Poly(2-oxazoline)s are regarded as pseudopeptides, thus bioinspired polymers, due to their structural relationship to polypeptides. Materials and solution properties can be tuned by varying the side-chain (hydrophilic-hydrophobic, chiral, bioorganic, etc.), opening the way to advanced stimulus-responsive materials and complex colloidal structures. The bioinspired ―smart‖ solution and aggregation behavior of poly(2-oxazoline)s in aqueous environments are discussed in this review.

Direct dissolution of glycosylated polybutadiene-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers can lead to the spontaneous formation of vesicles or membranes, which on the outside are coated with glucose and on the inside with poly(ethylene oxide).

The presence of lymph node metastases relevantly and significantly impairs disease-specific survival in patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract. In a VX2 animal tumor model, we present an interstitial translymphatic therapeutic approach using cis-diaminedichloro-platinum(II) (CDDP) conjugated to a poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(lysine) (PEO-b-PLys) block copolymer tracking systems for the successful treatment of lymph node metastases. Most effective was the application of a high cargo-load CDDP tracking system (48 wt. % CDDP) curing 90% of the animals and causing only minor local side-effects. Systems containing 1 or 10 wt. % of CDDP were less effective but still cured 50% of the animals. Moreover, the administration of 1 or 10 wt. % of CDDP consistently limited tumor growth to the draining lymph nodes (50%) and prevented systemic distribution of the metastasis even'with 1 wt. % CDDP load. The systems contained 0.25-0.003 mg/kg per body weight CDDP compared to 1 ml/kg per body weight as usually used for intravenous administration. This approach encourages further and more detailed research of a CDDP-based interstitial translymphatic administration of chemotherapy for lymphogenic metastasizing carcinomas in different body regions.

The aggregation behaviour of biomimetic polypeptide hybrid copolymers and copolypeptides is here reviewed with a particular eye on the occurrence of secondary structure effects. Structure elements like α-helix or β-sheet can induce a deviation from the "classical" phase behaviour and promote the formation of vesicles or hierarchical superstructures with ordering in the length-scale of microns. Polypeptide copolymers are therefore considered as models to study self-assembly processes in biological systems. In addition, they offer a great potential for a production of novel advanced materials and colloids.

A new type of gemini poly(ionic liquid), poly[(1,8-octanediyl-bis(tri-n-butylphosphonium) 4-styrene sulfonate], was synthesized via the free radical polymerization of a dicationic ionic liquid monomer in DMF. This poly(ionic liquid) presented a lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type phase transition in aqueous solution. Unusually this phase transition can be observed even at a concentration as low as 0.1 wt%. Additionally, the type and concentration of external salt can influence the cloud point. Copolymerisation of this gemini dicationic ionic liquid monomer with divinylbenzene crosslinker in water led to the formation of a hydrogel, which exhibited a temperature-triggered volume change in water.
