Abstract

An intercomparison exercise is described that examines Monte Carlo modelling of anthropomorphic voxel phantoms in an idealized ground-contamination photon exposure scenario. Thirteen participants calculated and submitted organ and effective dose rates for comparison against a set of verified reference solutions. The effective dose rates are shown to agree with the reference value to within reasonable statistical uncertainties in five of the cases, though in only one of those was similar agreement also demonstrated in the evaluation of all requested organ dose rates. Orders-of-magnitude differences in doses are seen for some of the other participants, both internally within their own dataset and also relative to the reference solutions. Following limited feedback and suggestions from the organizer, up to two sets of revised solutions were resubmitted by some of the participants; these generally exhibited improved agreement, though not always. Abstract

Cosmic particle flux increases with latitude and altitude and is significantly higher on-board aircraft than at ground level. Furthermore, its intensity depends on solar activity and eruptions. Due to their professional activity, flight crews (FCs) may receive an annual dose of some millisieverts. Therefore, the European directive adopted in 1996 requires the aircraft operators to assess the dose. The effective dose is to be estimated using various experimental and calculation means. In France, it is carried out by the computerized system for flight assessment of exposure to cosmic radiation SIEVERTPN, which sends to SISERI, the national dose registry, the monthly effective dose of each crew member. The average annual effective dose of French FCs was 2.19 mSv in 2019, i.e.between the standard permissible limits set for the public and the limit set for occupationally exposed persons. The effective dose received by the most exposed French FCs increased during the period 2015–2019 and that could be due to the solar cycle effect, changes in the staff flight time or the aircraft model. It can also be noted that more technical flight crews (TFCs) received a dose greater than 5 mSv over the 2016 to 2019 period than commercial flight crew (CFCs). Our study indicates that the number of FCs having received a dose greater than 5 mSv also increased over the period 2016 to 2019. Some parameters, that may affect the assessment of the aircrew effective dose, are not considered in SIEVERTPN calculations, as for example the Forbush decreases and the location in the plane. Lastly, several factors lead us to expect a decrease in the doses received by French aircrew staff in the coming years, such as the peak activity of the 25theleven-year solar cycle expected in July 2025. However, some unexpected events, as for instance the war in Ukraine, can alter this prediction.

Abstract

Background High rates of food insecurity are documented among Inuit households in Canada; however, data on food insecurity prevalence and seasonality for Inuit households with children are lacking, especially in city centres. This project: (1) compared food consumption patterns for households with and without children, (2) compared the prevalence of food insecurity for households with and without children, (3) compared food consumption patterns and food insecurity prevalence between seasons, and (4) identified factors associated with food insecurity in households with children in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. Methods Randomly selected households were surveyed in Iqaluit in September 2012 and May 2013. Household food security status was determined using an adapted United States Department of Agriculture Household Food Security Survey Module. Univariable logistic regressions were used to examine unconditional associations between food security status and demographics, socioeconomics, frequency of food consumption, and method of food preparation in households with children by season. Results Households with children (n = 431) and without children (n = 468) participated in the survey. Food insecurity was identified in 32.9% (95% CI: 28.5–37.4%) of households with children; this was significantly higher than in households without children (23.2%, 95% CI: 19.4–27.1%). The prevalence of household food insecurity did not significantly differ by season. Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the person responsible for food preparation, including low formal education attainment (ORSept = 4.3, 95% CI: 2.3–8.0; ORMay = 3.2, 95% CI: 1.8–5.8), unemployment (ORSept = 1.1, 95% CI: 1.1–1.3; ORMay = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.1–1.5), and Inuit identity (ORSept = 8.9, 95% CI: 3.4–23.5; ORMay = 21.8, 95% CI: 6.6–72.4), were associated with increased odds of food insecurity in households with children. Fruit and vegetable consumption (ORSept = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2–0.8; ORMay = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.2–0.9), as well as eating cooked (ORSept = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3–1.0; ORMay = 0.5, 95% CI: 0.3–0.9) and raw (ORSept = 1.7, 95% CI: 0.9–3.0; ORMay = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.0–3.1) fish were associated with decreased odds of food insecurity among households with children, while eating frozen meat and/or fish (ORSept = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.4–5.0; ORMay = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.1–3.7) was associated with increased odds of food insecurity. Conclusions Food insecurity is high among households with children in Iqaluit. Despite the partial subsistence livelihoods of many Inuit in the city, we found no seasonal differences in food security and food consumption for households with children. Interventions aiming to decrease food insecurity in these households should consider food consumption habits, and the reported demographic and socioeconomic determinants of food insecurity. Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the optimal use of XR-RV3 GafChromic (R) films to assess patient skin dose in interventional radiology while addressing the means to reduce uncertainties in dose assessment. Methods: XR-Type R GafChromic films have been shown to represent the most efficient and suitable solution to determine patient skin dose in interventional procedures. As film dosimetry can be associated with high uncertainty, this paper presents the EURADOS WG 12 initiative to carry out a comprehensive study of film characteristics with a multisite approach. The considered sources of uncertainties include scanner, film, and fitting-related errors. The work focused on studying film behavior with clinical high-dose-rate pulsed beams (previously unavailable in the literature) together with reference standard laboratory beams. Results: First, the performance analysis of six different scanner models has shown that scan uniformity perpendicular to the lamp motion axis and that long term stability are the main sources of scanner-related uncertainties. These could induce errors of up to 7% on the film readings unless regularly checked and corrected. Typically, scan uniformity correction matrices and reading normalization to the scanner-specific and daily background reading should be done. In addition, the analysis on multiple film batches has shown that XR-RV3 films have generally good uniformity within one batch ( LT 1.5%), require 24 h to stabilize after the irradiation and their response is roughly independent of dose rate ( LT 5%). However, XR-RV3 films showed large variations (up to 15%) with radiation quality both in standard laboratory and in clinical conditions. As such, and prior to conducting patient skin dose measurements, it is mandatory to choose the appropriate calibration beam quality depending on the characteristics of the x-ray systems that will be used clinically. Abstract

Background: Human papillomaviruses are the most common sexually transmitted infections, and genital warts, caused by HPV-6 and 11, entail considerable morbidity and cost. The natural history of genital warts in relation to HIV-1 infection has not been described in African women. We examined risk factors for genital warts in a cohort of high-risk women in Burkina Faso, in order to further describe their epidemiology. Methods: A prospective study of 765 high-risk women who were followed at 4-monthly intervals for 27 months in Burkina Faso. Logistic and Cox regression were used to identify factors associated with prevalent, incident and persistent genital warts, including HIV-1 serostatus, CD4+ count, and concurrent sexually transmitted infections. In a subset of 306 women, cervical HPV DNA was tested at enrolment. Results: Genital wart prevalence at baseline was 1.6% (8/492) among HIV-uninfected and 7.0% (19/273) among HIV-1 seropositive women. Forty women (5.2%) experienced at least one incident GW episode. Incidence was 1.1 per 100 person-years among HIV-uninfected women, 7.4 per 100 person-years among HIV-1 seropositive women with a nadir CD4+ count >200 cells/mu L and 14.6 per 100 person-years among HIV-1 seropositive women with a nadir CD4+ count

Abstract

La propagation végétative du cocotier (#Cocos nucifera# L.) par embryogenèse somatique reste une entreprise difficile, due à l'extrême récalcitrance de cette plante à la culture #in vitro#. Parmi les difficultés majeures on peut citer le brunissement intense des tissus maintenus #in vitro#, la lenteur des processus, la difficulté d'obtention d'embryons somatiques capables de germer et la faible vigueur des vitroplants. Pour tenter de comprendre et de lever ces difficultés, six équipes (l'ORSTOM/CIRAD-CP, France ; l'IDEFOR/DPO, Côte d'Ivoire ; le Wye College, Royaume-Uni ; l'Université de Hanovre, Allemagne ; PCA, Philippines et CICY, Mexique) ont initié en 1995 une collaboration sous l'égide de la Communauté Européenne. Au travers de diverses approches, la recherche de l'amélioration du procédé de culture #in vitro#, l'utilisation de différents cultivars, la recherche de marqueurs précoces de l'embryogenèse, l'étude de la physiologie du vitroplant, mais aussi grâce à de nombreux échanges d'informations et de compétences, ce projet vise à accroître les connaissances de la physiologie des tissus de cocotier #in vitro# et à améliorer le protocole de régénération de cette espèce. Le présent article fait état de la stratégie de recherche adoptée en collaboration avec divers partenaires et illustre les principaux résultats obtenus dans le cadre de la réalisation de ce projet.

Abstract

The average lifetime ofB hadrons was measured using data collected with the DELPHI detector at the LEP collider during 1991 and 1992. The measurement was performed using two different anayses. The first method was an improvement on a previous technique, which used charged particle impact parameter distributions. This analysis measured an average lifetime forB hadrons of $$\tau _B = 1.542 \pm 0.021(stat.) \pm 0.045(syst.)ps.$$ (1) The second method was based on a new technique, which used inclusively reconstructed secondary vertices to measure $$\tau _B = 1.599 \pm 0.014(stat.) \pm 0.035(syst.)ps.$$ (2) Taking into account both the statistical and systematic corelations, the results of these two methods were combined to give an average lifetime forB hadrons of $$\tau _B = 1.582 \pm 0.012(stat.) \pm 0.032(syst.)ps.$$ (3)

Abstract

Une étape importante a été atteinte dans la maîtrise de la propagation végétative #in vitro$ du cocotier : obtention reproductible de plantules à partir de 5 clones appartenant à différents génotypes. Deux sortes de tissus prélevés sur des arbres adultes sélectinnés ont été utilisés : explants foliaires et explants inflorenscenciels. La méthode développée comprend les étapes suivantes : induction de la callogénèse sur explants primaires, induction de l'embryogénèse sur les cals obtenus, maturation des embryons et production de plantules. L'étape finale n'a pas été maîtrisée jusqu'à présent. Les embryons obtenus étaient incomplets et dépourvus de méristène caulinaire, obstacle majeur de la méthode au développement d'un procédé de clonage du cocotier. Une approche analytique a permis une meilleure compréhension des causes d'échecs de l'embryogénèse. Ces nouvelles données ont conduit à la production d'embryons complets de façon reproductible, décrits pour la première fois grâce à une étude histologique. Actuellement le travail s'oriente vers la recherche de milieux de culture qui favoriseraient la prolifération intense d'embryons pour une production en masse de plantules. (Résumé d'auteur)

Abstract

Evidence for the production of b-flavoured baryons in Z0 decays is reported from the analysis of 365 000 hadronic events collected by the DELPHI detector. Assuming that most of the weakly decaying b flavoured baryons produced by the Z0 are Λb, the observed signal of View the MathML source pairs, where l is a high transverse momentum lepton in the same jet as the Λ, leads to a production rate: f(b→Λb)×Br(Λb→ΛlνX) = (0.41±0.13±0.09)%. Using a sample of 18 reconstructed Λb decay vertices, the lifetime is determined to be τ(Λb) = (1.04+0.48−0.38±0.10) ps.

Abstract

Seven unambiguous events out of a sample of 270 000 Z0 decays, contain in tile same jet a D(s) meson and a muon at large transverse momentum relative to the et axis. These events are direct evidence for B(s)0 meson production in hadronic Z0 decays. The production rate of these events, relative to all hadronic Z0 decays is ( 18 +/- 8) x 10(-5) this number including the relevant branching fractions of the B(s)0 and D(s). The value of the B(s)0 meson lifetime relative to the average B meson lifetime is measured to be 0.8 +/- 0.4.

Abstract

An analysis of the fluctuations in the phase space distribution of hadrons produced in the decay of 78829 Z0 has been carried out, using the method of factorial moments. The high statistics collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP during 1990 allowed studies of the event sample both globally and in intervals of p(t) and multiplicity, and for different jet topologies and for single jets. A large contribution to the factorial moments of the one-dimensional data on rapidity with respect to the event axis comes from hard gluons. Details of factorial moments in two and three dimensions are presented. Influences of resonance decays have been studied by Monte Carlo simulation: one-dimensional factorial moments at low p(t), and two-, three-dimensional analyses are affected. Parton shower models describe the data reasonably well.

Une étape importante vient d'être franchie dans la maîtrise de la multiplication végétative du cocotier : l'obtention de façon reproductible de vitroplants sur 5 clones appartenants à des génotypes différents. Deux sources de tissus prélevés sur individus adultes sont utilisés : explants foliaires et explants inflorescenciels. Le procédé mis en oeuvre comprend les étapes suivantes : callogenèse sur explants primaires, induction de l'embryogenèse sur les cals, maturation des embryons, développement des pousses feuillées et des racines. La production régulière de cals embryogènes et d'embryons somatiques complets a permis leur description histologique

Abstract

An analysis of the fluctuations in the phase space distribution of hadrons produced in the decay of 78829 Z0 has been carried out, using the method of factorial moments. The high statistics collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP during 1990 allowed studies of the event sample both globally and in intervals of p(t) and multiplicity, and for different jet topologies and for single jets. A large contribution to the factorial moments of the one-dimensional data on rapidity with respect to the event axis comes from hard gluons. Details of factorial moments in two and three dimensions are presented. Influences of resonance decays have been studied by Monte Carlo simulation: one-dimensional factorial moments at low p(t), and two-, three-dimensional analyses are affected. Parton shower models describe the data reasonably well.

Abstract

A classifier based on a feed-forward neural network has been used for separating a sample of about 123 500 selected hadronic decays of the Z 0 , collected by DELPHI during 1991, into three classes according to the flavour of the original quark pair: u u +d d +s s (unresolved), c c and b b . The classification has been used to compute the partial widths of the Z 0 into b and c quark pairs. This gave Γ c c /Γ h = 0.151 ± 0.008 ( stat. ) ± 0.041 ( syst. ) , Γ b b /Γ h = 0.232±0.005 ( stat. )±0.017 ( syst. ) .

Abstract

A classifier based on a feed-forward neural network has been used for separating a sample of about 123 500 selected hadronic decays of the Z0, collected by DELPHI during 1991, into three classes according to the flavour of the original quark pair: uuBAR + ddBAR + ssBAR (unresolved), ccBAR and bbBAR. The classification has been used to compute the partial widths of the ZO into b and c quark pairs. This gave GAMMA(ccBAR)/GAMMA(h) = 0.151 +/- 0.008 (stat.) +/- 0.041 (syst.), GAMMA(bbBAR)/GAMMA(h) = 0.232 +/- 0.005 (stat.) +/- 0.017 (syst.).

36. Binding of ADAM12, a marker of skeletal muscle regeneration, to the muscle-specific actin-binding protein, alpha -actinin-2, is required for myoblast fusion

Abstract

ADAM12 belongs to the transmembrane metalloprotease ADAM ("a disintegrin and metalloprotease") family. ADAM12 has been implicated in muscle cell differentiation and fusion, but its precise function remains unknown. Here, we show that ADAM12 is dramatically up-regulated in regenerated, newly formed fibers in vivo. In C2C12 cells, ADAM12 is expressed at low levels in undifferentiated myoblasts and is transiently up-regulated at the onset of differentiation when myoblasts fuse into multinucleated myotubes, whereas other ADAMs, such as ADAMs 9, 10, 15, 17, and 19, are expressed at all stages of differentiation. Using the yeast two-hybrid screen, we found that the muscle-specific alpha-actinin-2 strongly binds to the cytoplasmic tail of ADAM12. In vitro binding assays with GST fusion proteins confirmed the specific interaction. The major binding site for alpha-actinin-2 was mapped to a short sequence in the membrane-proximal region of ADAM12 cytoplasmic tail; a second binding site was identified in the membrane-distal region. Co-immunoprecipitation experiments confirm the in vivo association of ADAM12 cytoplasmic domain with alpha-actinin-2. Overexpression of the entire cytosolic ADAM12 tail acted in a dominant negative fashion by inhibiting fusion of C2C12 cells, whereas expression of a cytosolic ADAM12 lacking the major alpha-actinin-2 binding site had no effect on cell fusion. Our results suggest that interaction of ADAM12 with alpha-actinin-2 is important for ADAM12 function.

Abstract

The actin-binding protein villin induces microvillus growth and reorganization of the cytoskeleton in cells that do not normally produce this protein. Transfection of mutagenized villin cDNAs into CV-1 cells was used to show that a conserved, COOH-terminally located cluster of charged amino acid residues (KKEK) is crucial for the morphogenic activity of villin in vivo. In vitro experiments with a 22 amino acid synthetic peptide corresponding to this region of villin provide evidence that this motif is part of an F-actin-binding site that induces G-actin to polymerize. Chemical cross-linking of actin to this peptide, the effects of amino acid substitutions in peptides, and the behavior of villin variants further corroborate the participation of the KKEK sequence in actin contacts.
