The balance between water supply and demand is essential for industrial growth, affecting economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Our research employs a Gaussian process regression for demand prediction. Additionally, it takes into account water limits and policy thresholds when determining the supply, thereby defining a range of uncertainty for both the industrial demand and the supply. A pattern recognition method matches this trade-off range, identifying three patterns to support water management. The study focuses on the analysis of industrial water supply and demand dynamics under uncertain conditions in nine cities (Baiyin, Dingxi, Gannan, Lanzhou, Linxia, Pingliang, Qingyang, Tianshui, and Wuwei) in Gansu Province of China's Yellow River Basin in 2030. The results of the study show that industrial water use in Baiyin, Linxia, Dingxi, and Tianshui cities falls into Pattern I, providing water resources to support industrial development. Industrial water use in Wuwei, Pingliang, Qingyang, and Gannan cities represents Pattern II, which maintains a balance between supply and demand while allowing flexibility in water demand. Finally, the industrial water use in Lanzhou city is characterized by Pattern III, which requires optimization through structural, technological, and management improvements to mitigate the negative impacts of water scarcity on the sustainable development of the economy and society. Groundwater is a critical freshwater resource in Italy's Po plain, which includes Milan (northern Italy), one of Europe's most industrialized and urbanized areas. This region relies heavily on groundwater for both industrial and public water supplies. However, the quantity and quality of this resource are vulnerable to both natural and human-induced factors, such as climate change, industrial activities, and changing water use practices. This study investigates and addresses the complex management challenges of groundwater resources of Milan in the framework of the EU directives. A steady-state groundwater flow model was developed as part of the broader project MODEL-MI to aid in the creation of a Water Safety Plan (WSP). This study highlights the importance of accurate stratigraphic data to constructing a reliable hydrogeological conceptual model. The model, calibrated using extensive data, successfully reproduces groundwater flow patterns and will be used both to support decision-making for sustainable groundwater management and to predict future impacts of climate change on water resources. Outdated, oversized variable speed pump drives (VSDPs) in industry lead to sub-optimal energy efficiency and considerable energy losses. This paper proposes methods to develop 2D efficiency maps for motors, converters, and pumps using polynomial surface fitting, which enables efficiency evaluation in a wide operating range. The method was applied to an oversized VSDP in an industrial chilled water supply system, comparing the original system with five alternative VSDP combinations with high-efficiency motors and pumps. The five VSDP variants demonstrated average energy savings of around 30%, with the synchronous reluctance motor (SRM) configurations outperforming the induction motor (IM) configurations by up to 7 percentage points, particularly at low loads. The high-efficiency SRM-based 252-IE5 variant delivered the best overall energy performance, highlighting the benefits of optimised system sizing and motor selection for energy savings. The proposed method can be used in both industrial and residential applications and offers great advantages in process systems that require variable flow and pressure of water or other fluids during operation, such as HVAC, water supply and wastewater treatment, district heating, etc. The development of a VSDP drive with efficient energy optimisation is an interdisciplinary problem of mechanical and electrical engineering, and without the interaction of engineers from both fields the result will not be optimal. We try to present our method so that it can be a reliable tool for mechanical, electrical, and other engineers or researchers to assist them in finding possible energy savings, performing energy audits, and selecting the most suitable components when modernising existing or developing new systems. Since ancient times, dams have been built to store water, control rivers, and irrigate agricultural land to meet human needs. By the end of the 19th century, hydroelectric power stations arose and extended the purposes of dams. Today, dams can be seen as part of the renewable energy supply infrastructure. The word dam comes from French and is defined in dictionaries using words like strange, dike, and obstacle. In other words, a dam is a structure that stores water and directs it to the desired location, with a dam being built in front of river valleys. Dams built on rivers serve various purposes such as the supply of drinking water, agricultural irrigation, flood control, the supply of industrial water, power generation, recreation, the movement control of solids, and fisheries. Dams can also be built in a catchment area to capture and store the rainwater in arid and semi-arid areas. Dams can be built from concrete or natural materials such as earth and rock. There are various types of dams: embankment dams (earth-fill dams, rock-fill dams, and rock-fill dams with concrete faces) and rigid dams (gravity dams, rolled compacted concrete dams, arch dams, and buttress dams). A gravity dam is a straight wall of stone masonry or earthen material that can withstand the full force of the water pressure. In other words, the pressure of the water transfers the vertical compressive forces and horizontal shear forces to the foundations beneath the dam. The strength of a gravity dam ultimately depends on its weight and the strength of its foundations. Most dams built in ancient times were constructed as gravity dams. An arch dam, on the other hand, has a convex curved surface that faces the water. The forces generated by the water pressure are transferred to the sides of the structure by horizontal lines. The horizontal, normal, and shear forces resist the weight at the edges. When viewed in a horizontal section, an arch dam has a curved shape. This type of dam can also resist water pressure due to its particular shape that allows the transfer of the forces generated by the stored water to the rock foundations. This article takes a detailed look at hydraulic engineering in dams over the millennia. Lessons should be learned from the successful and unsuccessful applications and operations of dams. Pump station engineering is a water conservancy project used for long-distance water transfer, irrigation and drainage, and urban living and industrial water supply. Centrifugal pumps are one of the main pump types commonly used in pumping stations, and their operation is of considerable importance for the safety, stability, and efficient operation of pumping stations. This paper takes a large pumping station with seven centrifugal pump units as the research object and combines experimental research and numerical simulation. The axial flow velocity uniformity, average cross-sectional deviation angle, and hydraulic loss of the pump inlet section are evaluated, and the internal flow characteristics of the pump under different startup combination conditions are analyzed based on entropy generation and vorticity. This study also explores the operational performance of the pump station under different startup combination conditions, revealing the mutual influence mechanism between different startup combinations of pump stations and the internal and external characteristics of centrifugal pumps and introducing the optimal startup combination scheme for the pump station system. Research results indicate that the difference in energy loss of centrifugal pumps under different startup combinations is mainly manifested in the impeller and guide vane flow channels. For the two existing inlet flow channel structures in the pump station, the unit effectively operates when the inlet flow channel is tilted to the left. Introduction: Water supply for industrial use and social consumption decreases due to droughts, overexploitation of groundwater and pollution from agricultural and industrial chemicals. Objective: To evaluate the quality of water for industrial use and social consumption from the supply source belonging to the Central Refinería Ecuador (Sugar Refinery Ecuador). Materials and Methods: The quality of water for industrial use and social consumption was evaluated through the application of testing techniques and methods, in the determination of physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. Results and Discussion: The water quality parameters for industrial use and social consumption evaluated were odor, taste and color of odorless, tasteless and colorless respectively. Total dissolved solids were 553 mg L-1, pH 7,33 pH units, calcium 75 mg L-1, magnesium 45 mg L-1, chloride 45 mg L-1, sulfate of 21 mg L-1, nitrite of 0,03 mg L-1, nitrates of 20,2 mg L-1, total coliforms of 1 222 most probable number per 100 mL and thermotolerant coliforms of 584 most probable number probable per 100 mL. Conclusions: These water quality values are suitable for industrial use, while for social consumption they are not suitable due to microbiological contamination and non-compliance with health protection requirements. Water, soil, and heat are strategic supporting elements for human survival and social development. The degree of matching between human-land-water-heat elements directly influences the sustainable development of a region. However, the current evaluation of the matching of human-land-water-heat elements overlooks the influence of elevation factors on the matching results, especially evident in mountainous areas. Taking the Yunnan Plateau with distinctive mountainous features as the research subject, divided into 11 elevation ranges, the Lorenz Gini coefficient, asymmetry coefficient, matching distance, and imbalance index are used to assess the spatial matching and balance of human-land-water-heat elements. A projection tracing model is employed to analyze its water resource carrying capacity. Analyses revealed that the Gini coefficient of monthly precipitation from the 1950s to 2022 on the Yunnan Plateau increases with increasing latitude, whereas the correlation with elevation is notably lower. The asymmetry coefficient increases gradually from west to east with change in longitude. The mismatch of the human–land–water–heat system in regions at different elevations is in the order 1800–2000 m > 2000–2200 m > 1400–1600 m > 800 m > other areas. The matching of the human–land–water–heat system in different wet–dry years and seasons also fluctuates with elevation, resulting in serious seasonal drought and water shortage problems in mountainous areas with elevations of 1200–1600, 1800–2000 m, and >2600 m. The spatial equilibrium of temperature and precipitation in regions of different elevations is best, followed by that of cultivated land, while that of the population is the worst. The Gini coefficients for different water cycle processes of precipitation, surface runoff, and regulating storage capacity for water supply continue to increase. Specifically, the Gini coefficient of industrial water supply is the highest, reaching 0.576, and that of agricultural irrigation is the lowest (0.424). Through artificial regulation of lake and reservoir water, seasonal changes in the demand for agricultural irrigation water are offset to achieve a demand–supply balance and matching of land and water resources. The water resource capacity of different elevation ranges is evenly underloaded. However, the potential of the water resource capacity varies obviously with elevation in the order 2000–2200 m < 1800–2000 m < 1600–8000 m < 1400–1600 m < other areas. Water is one of the most important resources found on Earth, essential for all forms of life. Both the quantity and quality of water resources are crucial for the health of the population and for economic sectors, making water a factor in determining a society's standard of living. Mine water serves as an appealing source of both drinking and technological water. Regardless of the exploitation method, it must be pumped to the surface and, usually, treated to meet environmental standards. In most cases, it is discharged to rivers. In this article, we present a model of the use of mine water from three pumping stations of decommissioned coal mines in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin—Jan Kanty, Saturn, and Boże Dary. Water from these pumping stations is characterized by good qualitative and quantitative parameters. The results of the physico-chemical composition analyses carried out in the years 2012–2022 did not reveal any excessive amounts of toxic components or treatment difficulties. Given the long operational lifespan of these pumping stations and their existing water extraction infrastructure, they emerge as promising sources of both potable and industrial water supply, demanding minimal treatment efforts. Reservoir engineering plays a critical role in achieving rational water resource allocation, providing ecological services, and promoting regional development. However, in the formulation of water allocation plans, there is often a tendency to prioritize meeting regional water demand while overlooking ecological benefits. This study develops a multi-objective water allocation model based on evaluating ecosystem services value supply and demand, integrating indicators such as ecosystem service fulfillment ability, water resources fulfillment ability, and equilibrium operation degree. Different development scenarios are also established using a forecasting model to formulate water allocation plans and apply a case study of the Datun Reservoir, a key hub on the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in China. This study demonstrates that (1) by optimizing the allocation of domestic and industrial water supply and reservoir storage, the overall ecosystem service value of the Datun Reservoir can be enhanced by 5.15% to 11.36% and (2) in scenarios of high economic growth, there is potential to achieve coordination between water supply and ecosystem service value. (3) However, lower-than-expected economic growth may lead to a trade-off between ecosystem services and water supply capacity in the reservoir, which could be maintained at a lower level. Xinjiang, located in the arid region of the northwest, is one of the areas most sensitive to global changes. The Kaidu River Basin, situated in the heart of Xinjiang, is one of the sources of China's largest inland river—the Tarim River. The Kaidu River not only bears the responsibility for supplying water for industrial use and agricultural production and people's daily life in the basin, but also plays a crucial role in ecological water supply to the Tarim River. Studying and analyzing the characteristics and trends of meteorological condition in the future under climate change can provide important references and a basis for a deeper understanding of changes in the hydrological process and water resources in the basin. Therefore, this paper selects seven precipitation bias correction methods and four temperature bias correction methods to adjust the precipitation and temperature output data of eight general circulation models of the Sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) within the Kaidu River Basin. The applicability of different bias correction methods in the study area is evaluated, and based on the corrected future meteorological data and calculated extreme meteorological index, the trends of meteorological data (precipitation, temperature) in the future period (2025–2050) under four SSP scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP5-8.5) in the Kaidu River Basin are analyzed. The results show that: (1) Different types of bias correction methods have different correction focus and effects; their reflections on evaluation indicators are also different. (2) In the future period (2025–2050), the annual precipitation and average temperature in the Kaidu River Basin are higher than those in the historical period (1975–2014). The average annual temperature shows an upward trend in the future, but the annual precipitation shows a downward trend in the future except for the SSP2-4.5 scenario. (3) Compared with the historical period, the extreme precipitation in the future period under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 scenarios is higher than that in the historical period, and the number of rainless days decreases. In the future, under the SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, the probability of meteorological drought events occurring due to high temperatures in the basin may further increase, while under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, the situation of high temperatures and heavy rain in the basin may continue to increase. Reservoir operation rule curves are crucial for managing water supply and power generation in reservoirs. As the number of objectives and management requirements increase, there is a growing demand for optimized operation rule curves. The objective of this study is to explore the most effective forms of reservoir operation rule curves, focusing on the case of the Nierji Reservoir and considering the dual objectives of water supply and power generation. The parameter–simulation–optimization framework, specifically employing the NSGA-II algorithm, was used to analyze and compare two basic forms of operation rule curves: the shared type and independent type. The impact of these curves on water supply potential and multi-objective optimization results with various water demand scenarios was assessed. The analysis revealed that the choice of operation rule curve form can influence the maximum water supply potential of the reservoir to some extent. The independent type operation rule curve was significantly more effective in enhancing the water supply potential for industrial and domestic users, resulting in a notable increase of 3.5 × 108 m3. Additionally, it also proved beneficial for environmental users, with an increase of 1 × 108 m3. Conversely, the shared type operation rule curve demonstrated similar functionality to the independent type curve with fewer decision variables, particularly when the water demand was relatively low. In scenarios with high water demand, the independent type curve outperformed the shared type curve by generating 6549 superior, non-dominated solutions for multi-objective optimization, specifically focused on maximizing reservoir operation benefits. In conclusion, selecting the appropriate form of reservoir operation rule curve is crucial to balance different reservoir functional objectives and achieve optimal results. Further research could focus on quantifying the specific benefits and trade-offs associated with each type of curve in order to provide more robust evidence for the advantages of a complex reservoir system. The municipal water supply, related mainly to the cities of Albania, began to develop in the second half of the 19th century and very intensively after 1945. Today, the reported mean water production for the cities, on average, is about 300 l/capita/d, including drinking and industrial water supplies. The territory of Albania has an uneven distribution of very heterogeneous aquifers conditioning often the difficulty of municipal water supply solutions. In this article, are analyzed and classified the hydrogeological aspects of the water supply sources of the settlements, which are summarized in five groups: (a) wells in alluvial intergranular aquifers; (b) karst springs; (c) wells in karst aquifers; (d) springs in fissured rocks; and (e) mixed water sources. For each group of the water supply sources, the main concerns regarding the quantity and quality problems are analyzed, facilitated by the description of a variety of representative examples of different situations. Based on the gained experience, important recommendations are given for the better understanding of hydrogeological aspects of water supply systems, related to the river water recharge areas, the seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers, and the high vulnerability of karst aquifers, as well as transboundary aquifers. However, the main problem of public water supply of Albania remains the poor management of water supply systems, which is reflected in the significant water losses, as well as the low public awareness of requests for sustainable use. The Xiaolangdi Dam is a key project for the control and development of the Yellow River. It bears the functions of flood control, controlling water and sediment in the lower reaches, ice prevention, industrial and agricultural water supply, power generation, and so on. Its safety is related to people's life and property safety and local economic and social development. It is of great significance to carry out comprehensive and regular deformation monitoring for dams since the deformation is an important evaluation index for dam safety. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology has been a rapidly evolving technology in the field of space geodesy in recent years. It offers advantages such as high monitoring precision, extensive coverage, and high monitoring point density, making it a powerful tool for monitoring deformations in hydraulic engineering projects. Based on Sentinel-1 data covering the Xiaolangdi Dam from September 2020 to November 2022, the PS-InSAR technique was used to obtain the surface deformation of the Xiaolangdi Dam, and reservoir water level data on image acquisition dates were obtained for joint analysis. The results show that there is a large deformation in the center of the dam crest of the Xiaolangdi Dam, while both sides of the slope and downstream dam foot are relatively stable. The time series deformation of the dam body is closely related to the reservoir water level change. When the water level increases, the dam body tends to deform downstream; when the water level decreases, the dam body tends to deform upstream. The deformation and water level of the Xiaolangdi Dam exhibit a clear negative correlation. There is no significant cumulative deformation on the dam slopes or at the base of the dam. However, cumulative deformation occurs over time in the central area of the dam's crest. The deformation process at the central area of the dam's crest follows a continuous and non-disruptive pattern, which is consistent with the typical deformation behavior of the Xiaolangdi earth–rock dam structure. Therefore, it is judged that the current deformation of the Xiaolangdi Dam does not impact the safe operation of the dam. InSAR technology enables the rapid acquisition of high-precision, high-density deformation information on the surfaces of reservoir dams. With an increasing number of radar satellites in various frequency bands, such as Sentinel-1 and TerraSAR-X, there is now an ample supply of available data sources for InSAR applications. Consequently, InSAR technology can be extended to routine monitoring applications for reservoir dam deformations, especially for small and medium-sized reservoirs that may not be equipped with ground measurement tools like GNSS. Radon (222Rn), an inert gas, is considered a silent killer due to its carcinogenic characteristics. Dhaka city is situated on the banks of the Buriganga River, which is regarded as the lifeline of Dhaka city because it serves as a significant source of the city's water supply for domestic and industrial purposes. Thirty water samples (10 tap water from Dhaka city and 20 surface samples from the Buriganga River) were collected and analyzed using a RAD H2O accessory for 222Rn concentration. The average 222Rn concentration in tap and river water was 1.54 ± 0.38 Bq/L and 0.68 ± 0.29 Bq/L, respectively. All the values were found below the maximum contamination limit (MCL) of 11.1 Bq/L set by the USEPA, the WHO-recommended safe limit of 100 Bq/L, and the UNSCEAR suggested range of 4–40 Bq/L. The mean values of the total annual effective doses due to inhalation and ingestion were calculated to be 9.77 μSv/y and 4.29 μSv/y for tap water and river water, respectively. Although all these values were well below the permissible limit of 100 μSv/y proposed by WHO, they cannot be neglected because of the hazardous nature of 222Rn, especially considering their entry to the human body via inhalation and ingestion pathways. A very low concentration of manganese (Mn) in water is a critical issue for municipal and industrial water supply systems. Mn removal technology is based on the use of manganese oxides (MnOx), especially manganese dioxide (MnO2) polymorphs, under different conditions of pH and ionic strength (water salinity). The statistical significance of the impact of polymorph type (akhtenskite ε-MnO2, birnessite δ-MnO2, cryptomelane α-MnO2 and pyrolusite β-MnO2), pH (2–9) and ionic strength (1–50 mmol/L) of solution on the adsorption level of Mn was investigated. The analysis of variance and the non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis H test were applied. Before and after Mn adsorption, the tested polymorphs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope techniques and gas porosimetry analysis. Here we demonstrated the significant differences in adsorption level between MnO2 polymorphs' type and pH; however, the statistical analysis proves that the type of MnO2 has a four times stronger influence. There was no statistical significance for the ionic strength parameter. We showed that the high adsorption of Mn on the poorly crystalline polymorphs leads to the blockage of micropores in akhtenskite and, contrary, causes the development of the surface structure of birnessite. At the same time, no changes in the surfaces of cryptomelane and pyrolusite, the highly crystalline polymorphs, were found due to the very small loading by the adsorbate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development and implementation of circulating water supply systems at industrial companies makes it possible to create the maximum closed cycle with a minimum amount of waste, which is appropriate from an economic and environmental point of view. Corrosion and scale inhibitors must be used to comprehensively address the problem of biofouling, deposits of insoluble compounds and corrosion products. The possibility of using gipan for water stabilization with different levels of mineralization at increased temperatures has been evaluated. Gipan provides effective stabilization water treatment. The good management and safe operation of the urban water supply network are of great significance to residents' lives and industrial production. In view of the difficulties in supervision and leakage location of the urban water supply network, based on the technology of Internet of things and artificial intelligence algorithm, a leakage detection method of the urban water supply network is proposed. First of all, low-power, low-cost terminal detection equipment and gateway monitoring equipment are developed for remote data transmission through WiFi or cellular data networks. The data organization, storage, release and control are realized by using the data center software platform. Second, the leakage location model of the water supply network is established by using remote pressure monitoring data, and the accurate location of pipe network leakage is realized. Based on ALO and PSO optimization algorithms, the water supply network in an industrial area of a city in China is solved. Finally, the performance of the two optimization algorithms is compared and analyzed. The results show that the designed intelligent monitoring system of the water supply network can monitor the pipe network well. In addition, on the problem of leakage detection, the ALO algorithm is superior to the PSO algorithm in terms of optimization ability and search efficiency. Pumping systems, especially those used in the water supply sector and in industrial and hydroelectric facilities, are commonly infested by the golden mussel. This causes an increase in maintenance operations (e.g., system shutdowns for cleaning) that can generate an increased energy cost. The geographical expansion of the golden mussel in Latin America presents an economic risk, not only to the ecosystem in general, but also to the energy sector. The imminence of its spread in the Amazon region, one of the main river basins in South America, is cause for concern with regard to the problems that bioinvasion of this species can cause. Given the absence of studies on the loss of energy efficiency in pumping systems impacted by the golden mussel, this study proposes a methodology to estimate the increase in energy consumption and costs of pumping under such bioinfestation. For the standardization of the methodology and development of mathematical calculations (both novel and improved equations), data from the literature (the growth of the golden mussel as a function of infestation time) and an analysis of the dimensions (length and height) of a sample of mussels available in the laboratory were considered. These data were used to calculate the roughness generated by the mussel infestation in the pumping suction and discharger pipe, which was necessary to determine the loss of energy efficiency (load loss, power consumption, and cost of pumping) resulting from the increase in energy consumption for pumping. This methodology was applied to a pumping station representative of the Brazilian Amazon as a case study. The results show an average increase in economic indicators (consumption and cost of pumping) after the system undergoes bioinfestation. This total increase corresponded to 19% and 44% in the first and second years, respectively, achieving a stabilization of the increase in the cost of pumping at 46%, in the 30 months of operation. Our results demonstrate the pioneering nature of the proposal, since these are the first quantitative data on the energy efficiency of pumping systems associated with bioinfestation by the golden mussel. In this paper, a stepwise synthesis method was used to synthesize a glycine acid Schiff base copper complex catalyst to catalyze carbonyl hydrazine removal of DO in feedwater. The effects of reaction temperature, pH, mass concentration of catalyst, and carbonyl hydrazine dosage on the catalytic deoxygenation performance were investigated and the optimum conditions were determined. When the reaction temperature is 45 ℃, the dosage of carbonyl hydrazine is 2 times the theoretical amount, the initial pH of the solution is 8, and mass concentration of catalyst is 0.01 g/L, the removal rate of DO reaches 94.8% after 5 minutes of reaction. At the same time, the structure of the catalyst was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and UV spectrometry. Cu and glycine Schiff base ligand are coordinated, and —C=N—, —COO—, Ar—O— participate in the coordination with Cu. The complex can react with DO quickly at low and room temperatures for removing DO in water.

This research aims to beneficiate the clay deposits abundant in the Al Baha district to produce ceramic filters for "point-of-use" household water treatment technology to remove dissolved solids from water that is no longer valid for drinking purposes to meet the needs of the community through a safe household and industrial water supply after further treatment purposes. In addition, it helps to reduce the expenses of citizens earmarked to buy drinking water. A sample of laterite, clay, and kaolin from Al Baha district was thermally treated at 800 °C, acid treated with HCl, analyzed by XRD, FTIR, and SEM, and tested for treatment of household water. The temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and total dissolved solids (TDS) were measured. In the application step for point-of-use water treatment of household water, the treated materials were introduced in calcined kaolin filters and commercial polypropylene filters. Based on the results of household water treatment with raw and treated clay materials, the raw clay materials, has poor adsorption capacity. The thermal treatment of clay samples dehydrates the clay minerals into sintered aluminosilicates and enhances the conversion of poorly crystallized iron oxide to α-Fe2O3 without improving the adsorption capacity of clay materials. However, the acid treatment of the clay samples removes iron-bearing minerals leaving behind amorphous aluminosilicate matter characterized with improved adsorption capacity. It was concluded that the acid treatment of clay material by concentrated HCl acid completely leaches iron oxide phases and broke down and disintegrated the clay minerals into the amorphous matter with enhanced the adsorption capacity. The combination of selected acid-treated laterite, clay, and charcoal for the household water treatment filter at the point of use in the calcined kaolin filter and the polypropylene filter reduced the TDS content by 40–42%. The parasitic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) is the leading cause of human eosinophilic meningitis worldwide. Most human infections occur through the accidental consumption of A. cantonensis hidden within produce as infectious third-stage larvae (L3), yet little research has been published addressing possible methods to mitigate this means of transmission. Here, we describe our tests of ozone gas—an oxidizing agent—and ultrasound, both used for disinfection of food and municipal water supplies and in industrial cleaning. We found that exposure to ozone, produced using two different commercially available ozone generators over varying durations of time and concentrations, was capable of achieving 100% larval mortality. In addition, we evaluated the impact of different sound frequencies on A. cantonensis L3 survival using two different commercially available ultrasonic cleaners, and found that 60 s of 40 kHz produced 46% mortality within 2 h. The combined use of ultrasound and ozone gas simultaneously resulted in a minimum of 89% normalized mean percent mortality within 2 h of treatment. Our study suggests that both ozone and ultrasound show high larvicidal efficacy, both independently and together, and thus show promise as methods for reducing the risk of rat lungworm infection via accidental consumption. Financial feasibility is usually a concern in water reclamation projects. Aside from internal benefits, water reclamation in industrial parks delivers health and environmental benefits not normally considered in cost–benefit analyses (CBA). This study investigated the influence of environmental benefits on the feasibility of water reclamation projects with flow rate scenarios in accordance with industrial parks in Chonburi, Thailand. CBAs of water reclamation plants for industrial water supply, consisting of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO), with flow rates of 5200, 10,000, 15,000, and 25,000 m3/day and discount rates of 3%, 5%, 7%, 9% and 11% were conducted. Considering only the direct costs and benefits, none of the projects were financially feasible. However, when the environmental benefits were included, the projects became profitable in all cases except those with a flow rate of 5200 m3/day and discount rates of 5%, 7%, 9%, and 11% and those with flow rates of 10,000 and 25,000 m3/day and an 11% discount rate. Further, CBAs of water reclamation projects in industrial parks for irrigation were conducted with post-treatment processes consisting of sand filtration and chlorine disinfection for flow rates of 240, 480, 2400, 3600, and 4800 m3/day. Karst water quality degradation has been a challenge for domestic and industrial water supplies worldwide. To reveal the possible factors response for karst water quality degradation, Baotu karst spring system is studied as an representative example. In this study, a hydrogeochemical investigation and mathematical, statistical, and geochemical modeling was conducted together to identify the major hydrochemical processes involved in the degradation process. It is found that the karst water is normally fresh, neutral-to-slightly alkaline, with calcium and magnesium as the predominant cations, and bicarbonate and sulfate as the predominant anions. The abnormally high chloride (95.05 mg/L) and nitrate concentrations (148.4 mg/L) give clues to the potential source of contamination in some karst water. The main hydrochemical facies of karst water are HCO3-Ca and HCO3 × SO4-Ca, accounting for 76% of water samples. The water hydrochemistry is controlled mainly by the dissolution of carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite), followed by the dissolution of silicate and gypsum. The dissolution of calcite and dolomite mostly happens in the recharge area. In the discharge area, the karst water is basically in equilibrium with calcite. The negative SI value of gypsum represents that the water–gypsum interaction is dominated by dissolution along the whole flow path. Cation exchange is observed in the karst water in the indirect recharge area. Along the flow path, the contents of chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and TDS (Total dissolved solids, abbreviated TDS, indicates how many milligrams of dissolved solids are dissolved in one liter of water) vary significantly, which is mostly affected by pollution from human industrial and agricultural activities. The concentrations of major ions were maintained at a low level (<20 mg/L) in the 1960s in karst water. The fast elevation of the parameter values has occurred in the past two decades. The temporal elevation of some pollutants in karst water suggest that global changes (acid rain) and human activity (such as overusing fertilizer) are main factors resulting in the degradation of karst water quality in the study area. This article is a continuation of the topic of artificial water bodies in Ukraine, which was started in our previous publication in 2020. It was devoted to accounting and monitoring of ponds at the local and national levels. Reservoirs play important role in water supply for various sectors of the economy. For this reason, much more attention is paid to reservoirs by the State Agency of Water Resources of Ukraine (Ukr. Derzhavne ahentstvo vodnykh resursiv Ukrainy), the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine (Ukr. Ministerstvo ekolohii ta pryrodnykh resursiv Ukrainy), scientists and specialists. The main tasks of the article are: to establish patterns of territorial distribution of reservoirs in administrative regions and river basins districts; to identify the role of large and small reservoirs in the balance of river runoff regulation. There are 1054 reservoirs in Ukraine, so it can be considered a country rich in reservoirs. The volume of the cascade of six reservoirs on the Dnieper River and the Dniester Reservoir is 85%, other reservoirs - 15% of the total number. At the same time, there are 1047 other reservoirs (middle, small and very small), which provide for regional needs and which have their own patterns of distribution throughout the country. The main trend in their creation was water supply of industrial regions, in particular Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and others. About 28% of reservoirs are leased. Electrodialysis is an efficient process for the cleaning of industrial water effluent streams from toxic ionic substances with the simultaneous recovery of valuable ions for reuse. Energy consumption and waste recovery are the two key goals of the process. A dynamic optimisation program aims to determine the optimal operating conditions in terms of applied voltage and effluent flow rate in a batch operating scheme. A model is developed that accounts for the ion transfer through the ion selective membranes and the dynamics of the system. A combination of three objective functions targeting the minimisation of the overall batch process time, the minimisation of the electrical energy consumption required for the ion transfer, and the maximisation of the overall degree of separation is investigated. The manipulated variables applied voltage and feed stream flow rate are considered as piecewise constant during each time interval, spanning the duration of the entire batch. The dynamic optimisation problem is solved through standard non-linear programming techniques which calculate the optimal batch duration and condition profiles for the system. A multi-objective analysis is presented for various combinations of weight values for the joint objective function through the development of the Pareto optimal front. The current approach has been implemented in the removal and recovery of sulfuric anions from an aqueous solution and resulted in the achievement of a high degree of separation in a shorter period at a much lower energy consumption. Many European countries rely on groundwater for public and industrial water supply. Due to a scarcity of near-real-time water table depth (wtd) observations, establishing a spatially consistent groundwater monitoring system at the continental scale is a challenge. Hence, it is necessary to develop alternative methods for estimating wtd anomalies (wtd a) using other hydrometeorological observations routinely available near real time. In this work, we explore the potential of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for producing monthly wtd a using monthly precipitation anomalies (pr a) as input. LSTM networks are a special category of artificial neural networks that are useful for detecting a long-term dependency within sequences, in our case time series, which is expected in the relationship between pr a and wtd a. In the proposed methodology, spatiotemporally continuous data were obtained from daily terrestrial simulations of the Terrestrial Systems Modeling Platform (TSMP) over Europe (hereafter termed the TSMP-G2A data set), with a spatial resolution of 0.11 ∘ , ranging from the years 1996 to 2016. The data were separated into a training set (1996–2012), a validation set (2013–2014), and a test set (2015–2016) to establish local networks at selected pixels across Europe. The modeled wtd a maps from LSTM networks agreed well with TSMP-G2A wtd a maps on spatially distributed dry and wet events, with 2003 and 2015 constituting drought years over Europe. Moreover, we categorized the test performances of the networks based on intervals of yearly averaged wtd, evapotranspiration (ET), soil moisture (θ), snow water equivalent (Sw), soil type (St), and dominant plant functional type (PFT). Superior test performance was found at the pixels with wtd < 3 m, ET > 200 mm, θ>0.15 m 3 m -3 , and Sw<10 mm, revealing a significant impact of the local factors on the ability of the networks to process information. Furthermore, results of the cross-wavelet transform (XWT) showed a change in the temporal pattern between TSMP-G2A pr a and wtd a at some selected pixels, which can be a reason for undesired network behavior. Our results demonstrate that LSTM networks are useful for producing high-quality wtd a based on other hydrometeorological data measured and predicted at large scales, such as pr a. Karst groundwater in the Niangziguan spring fields is the main source to supply domestic and industrial water demands in Yangquan City, China. However, the safety of water supply in this region has recently suffered from deteriorating quality levels. Therefore, identifying pollution sources and causes is crucial for maintaining a reliable water supply. In this study, a systematic sample collection for the karst groundwater in the Niangziguan spring fields was implemented to identify hydrochemical characteristics of the karst groundwater through comprehensive analyses of hydrochemistry (piper diagram, and ion ratios,) and stable isotopes (S and H-O). The results show that the karst groundwater in the Niangziguan spring fields was categorized as SO4·HCO3-Ca·Mg, HCO3·SO4-Ca·Mg, and SO4-Ca types. K+, Cl-, and Na+ are mainly sourced from urban sewage and coal mine drainage. In addition, SO42− was mainly supplied by the dissolution of gypsum and the oxidation of FeS2 in coal-bearing strata. It is noteworthy that, based on H-O and S isotopes, 75% of the karst groundwater was contaminated by acidic water in coal mines at different degrees. In the groundwater of the Niangziguan spring field, the proportions of SO42− derived from FeS2 oxidation were 60.6% (N50, Chengxi spring), 30.3% (N51, Wulong spring), and 26.0% (N52, Four springs mixed with water). Acid mine drainage directly recharges and pollutes karst groundwater through faults or abandoned boreholes, or discharges to rivers, and indirectly pollutes karst groundwater through river infiltration in carbonate exposed areas. Sustainable water management is one of the key measures to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Increasing water consumption prompts industrial plants to implement water-saving projects and improve the utilization efficiency of water resources. This paper develops an integrated graphical method for designing an implementation path of water conservation projects that considers both water-saving targets and investment costs with or without subsidies. First, the cost-benefit analysis of each project is carried out. The unit water savings cost diagram is used to rank the priority of the implementation of each project. Then, the project mix which meets the expected water saving goal is determined by pinch analysis. Finally, the water conservation potential and cost-benefit of the optimal project mix are shown by the marginal cost curve diagram. This work presents two scenarios (i.e., with and without government subsidies). A chlor-alkali/ polyvinyl chloride complex is used as an illustrative case study. The complex achieves annual water savings of 3,580.4 kt by implementing the selected water conservation projects under the budget and subsidy constraints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most of the previous industrial water network models use freshwater as a vital water supply source without defining the origin of freshwater. However, in practice, the freshwater can be obtained from many water resources (e.g., municipal water, groundwater, surface water, municipally treated water, and seawater), after necessary Pre-treatment. Also, the effluents from the desalted water station, power station, and cooling water station can be used in other water using processes by satisfying the contaminant limits. Nevertheless, the existing water system design model does not apply directly to the design of effective industrial water systems. In order to overcome the above limitation, this paper proposed an innovative property based mathematical superstructure model for the industrial water network, consisting of water pre-treatment, water utility, waterusing, and wastewater treatment systems. The proposed mathematical model provides appropriate water resource selection to acquire freshwater for the industrial water network and integrates all possible functional designs for water treatment, reuse, and recycling. The design model comprises the related equations, flow rate, and property constraints between the different water sources and sinks. The proposed model is framed as a nonlinear programming (NLP) algorithm and resolved using commercial software GAMS. The proposed model is validated by a case study of the simplified water system of the Chinese industrial chemical complex. With the increasing pressure from population growth and economic development, northern China (NC) faces a grand challenge of water scarcity, which can be further exacerbated by climatic and societal changes. The South‐to‐North Water Diversion (SNWD) project is designed to mitigate the water scarcity in NC. However, few studies have quantified the impact of the SNWD on water scarcity within the context of climatic and societal changes and its potential effects on economic and agricultural food in the region. We used water supply stress index (WaSSI) to quantify water scarcity within the context of environmental change in NC and developed a method to estimate the economic and agricultural impacts of the SNWD. Focuses were put on alleviating the water supply shortage and economic and agricultural benefits for the water‐receiving NC. We find that societal changes, especially economic growth, are the major contributors to water scarcity in NC during 2009–2099. To completely mitigate the water scarcity of NC, at least an additional water supply of 13 billion m3/year (comparable to the annual diversion water by SNWD Central Route) will be necessary. Although SNWD alone cannot provide the full solution to NC's water shortage in next few decades, it can significantly alleviate the water supply stress in NC (particularly Beijing), considerably increasing the agricultural production (more than 115 Tcal/year) and bringing economic benefits (more than 51 billion RMB/year) through supplying industrial and domestic water use. Additionally, the transfer project could have impacts on the ecological environment in the exporting regions. The Serra da Canastra region is known for the production of a characteristic Minas artisanal cheese, named Canastra cheese. The objective of this study was to characterize the microbiological and physicochemical aspects of the water and cheese collected from the Minas artisanal cheese producing properties, as well as to characterize the environmental aspects of cheese manufacturing. The analyzes were carried out by private laboratories and the government in 2016 and 2017 and the results provided were tabulated and analyzed in the present study. In the physical chemical analyses of the water, the highest non-conformity was for free residual chlorine (44.69%). In the microbiological analyses of the water, 17.02% of the samples showed non-conformity for E. coli and total coliform parameters. In the microbiological analyses of the cheese, non-conformities were found in 7.84% of the samples for total coliforms at 30°C and 9.8% for coagulase-positive Staphylococcus spp. The physicochemical analyses of the cheese were all in compliance. No statistical association was found between the quality of the cheese and the water. The water sources were protected, however discard of the waste from cow pens, sanitary sewage, and garbage is still not properly handled. The study indicates that producers need to improve the quality control of the water supply for their cheese factories, fulfill the requirements of chlorine in the water and periodically verify this requirement, ensuring that the produced cheese is safe for human consumption. Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been detected in drinking water supplies around the world and are the subject of intense regulatory debate. While they have been associated with several illnesses, their effects on reproductive outcomes remains uncertain.Methods: We analyzed birth outcomes in the east Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area from 2002 to 2011, where a portion of the population faced elevated exposure to PFASs due to long-term contamination of drinking water supplies from industrial waste disposal. Installation of a water filtration facility in the highly contaminated city of Oakdale, MN at the end of 2006 resulted in a sharp decrease in exposure to PFASs, creating a "natural experiment". Using a difference-in-differences approach, we compare the changes in birth outcomes before and after water filtration in Oakdale to the changes over the same period in neighboring communities where the treatment of municipal water remained constant.Results: Average birth weight and average gestational age were statistically significantly lower in the highly exposed population than in the control area prior to filtration of municipal water supply. The highly exposed population faced increased odds of low birth weight (adjusted odds ratio 1.36, 95% CI 1.25-1.48) and pre-term birth (adjusted odds ratio 1.14, 95% CI 1.09-1.19) relative to the control before filtration, and these differences moderated after filtration. The general fertility rate was also significantly lower in the exposed population (incidence rate ratio 0.73, 95% CI 0.69-0.77) prior to filtration and appeared to be rebounding post-2006.Conclusions: Our findings provide evidence of a causal relationship between filtration of drinking water containing high levels of exposure to PFASs and improved reproductive outcomes. Jazmurian playa was an ephemeral lake with a large catchment in southeast Iran, which dried up over the last 10 years as a result of prolonged drought. As the lake was recipient of incoming industrial water with trace metals deposited to the sediment, the dust is the cause of environmental concern of the region and requires evaluation and better management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the environmental and ecological pollution of Jazmurian playa. Hence, 24 collected surface sedimentary samples were analyzed with ICP-OES. The environmental pollution indices including degree of contamination (Cd), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI) and potential ecological risk (PER) were determined. The study revealed moderately to strongly pollution levels of Pb, Ni and Al, while Dy, Pb, Y, Yb, Sm, Te, U, Cu, Mn, Sc represented moderate pollution. The EF values indicated four sites were highly enriched with Dy, Pb and Ni. The PER results showed high risk for four sites and considerable risk for others. Cluster analysis illustrated interconnection between the contaminants and the sites with major pollution at six sites. The article presents a discussion of research on water resources in Israel. The author reflects on the need to understand, study and solve the water supply problem in Israel on a large and regional scale including air, sea, soil and subsurface formations. He suggests on the further development of underground aquifers to store water without wasting through evaporation and the recycling of water used in industries and domestically. He also points out that the political animosity in the Middle East have been the significant barrier in the study of water cycle and its useful exploitation.

The article discusses the water problem in Israel. The author reflects that because Israel is a very small country, it requires intensive agriculture which needs sufficient and steady water supply. The nation's water problem for agricultural, industrial and domestic needs arise from three factors which are the limited supply of water, its nonuniform space distribution and nonuniform time distribution. Solutions to these problems include the creation of additional water sources, transporting water from the north to south of the country, and the short and long-term storage of water. The author also discusses other options of creating water supply by cloud seeding and the process of desalinating sea water.

Abstract In this study, an inexact two-stage stochastic downside risk-aversion programming is developed for regional industrial water resources allocation under considering system return-risk and various environment control strategies. In the model, interval-parameter programming, two-stage stochastic programming, and downside risk measure are introduced into an integrated framework for reflecting the complexity and uncertainty of industrial system, and avoiding the expected revenue risk. The method could not only reflect industrial water resources allocation characteristic among multiple users and suppliers, but also provide an effective linkage between economic cost and the system stability. The model is applied to a real case of industrial water resources allocation management in Chongqing city, China, where regional industrial system has faced with lots of difficulties and complexities in water resources utilization and water environmental protection. The impact of pollutants emission reduction and risk-aversion attitude on water resources allocation for different industry sectors, system benefits, and pollutants emissions were analyzed. The results indicated that the total pollutants emission amount control and the expected revenue risk can be used as effective measures for regional industry structure adjustment from terminal environmental and macro-economic perspective. The model has a significant value for regional industrial water optimization allocation under uncertainty to achieve the maximum economic benefits and the effective utilization of multiple water resources. Agricultural irrigators and industrial water users are two kinds of subjects in the market of water rights trading. In this paper, evolutionary game method and multi-agent simulation were used to analyze the non-collaborating and coopetitive behavior of these two kinds of agents. The main conclusions of this study are increased benefits are brought by collaboration and the reward and punishment will promote the development of co-operation. The greater these values are, the more the collaboration can be promoted. When one party chooses to collaborate and other chooses to non-collaborate, non-collaborative benefit and collaborative loss will promote the non-collaboration. The bigger these values are, the harder they are to collaborate. The more the impartial new profit is distributed, the more the collaboration can be promoted. Collaborative tactics have a strong advantage when the benefits of collaboration far outweigh non-collaborative benefits. Finally, based on the conclusions, suggestions for promoting the collaboration between agricultural irrigators and industrial water users were put forward in a targeted manner. Raising the efficiency of industrial water has become a hot topic in economic development and environmental governance. Based on DAGF method - a combination of Delphi method, analytic hierarchy process, gray relational analysis, and Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation - this paper evaluated the industrial water efficiency of 22 samples selected from China. The main conclusions are as follows: the overall efficiency of industrial water use in China is good but unbalanced, and the gap between regions is relatively large. Compared with areas which have resource-based water shortage and of which the economy is relatively backward, industrialized areas are more prone to industry water inefficiencies. Finally, according to the evaluation results, the following suggestions were put forward to improve the efficiency of industrial water use: the government should strengthen its guidance through establishing incentive and restraint mechanisms and enterprises should improve industrial water efficiency by developing water-saving technologies and accelerating the transformation of production mode. Abstract: Traditional industrial water network only consists of water-using processes and water treatment processes. The practical water-using processes may use freshwater, desalted water, condensation water, steam, circulating cooling water etc. and those are typically water utilities. It is not considered in the up-to-date model of industrial water network. To overcome the limitation, this paper proposed a novel superstructure of property-based industrial water system and it consists of water utility, water-using and water treatment sub-systems. The developed mathematical model includes the relevant equations among different water utilities, flowrate and mass balance constraints and property constraints. The water system of a certain coal-based chemical complex in China is optimized to illustrate the proposed model. The results show that the total annualized cost of the water system is reduced from 1.825 × 10 8 CNY/y (preliminary design) to 1.494 × 10 8 CNY/y (optimum design) and the flowrate of water resource is decreased from 1369.855 t/h to 1030.498 t/h. Existence of reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate effluents often creates a problem of its handling and utilization. This limits industrial applications of this technique for drinking and industrial water supply. The article presents the results of development and field testing of new proposed technique that removes calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide from RO retentate streams using seeding techniques. This new concentrate utilization technique uses RO membrane unit operated in circulation mode. Seed crystals of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide are added to the circulating concentrate flow. Calcium and magnesium deposit on the seed crystals due to their concentrations increase in membrane channel. The test unit is tailored with membrane modules that have “open channels” and eliminate trapping of particles by a spacer and increase of flow resistance. Seed crystals are suspended in circulating concentrate stream. The seed crystallization procedure provides up to 90% removal of hardness and alkalinity from RO concentrate and decrease concentrate total dissolved solids due to calcium and magnesium salts precipitation. RO retentate thus becomes a softened water that can be blended with product water to produce technical water used for cooling or heating, as well as for drinking purposes. The developed process does not require softening reagents that are used in stoichiometric amounts to deposit calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide during chemical softening. Sodium hydroxide is used only to produce seed crystals and to maintain pH of feed water at value of 8.8–9.0. Consumption of caustic by new seed crystallization process constitutes 2%–4% of the stoichiometric amount. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
