Contains fulltext : 291574.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

The theory of systemic and dynamic localization of higher mental functions by Lev Vygotsky and Alexander Luria was based on the data obtained via an original method, syndrome analysis of deficits of higher mental functions in patients with local brain injury. When this theory was being constructed, technical methods for brain investigation were only in their early stages. Although in later years Luria and his disciples pointed out that such methods were prominent for further development of Soviet/Russian neuropsychology, they are still rarely used by the followers of these scientists. In this article, we focus on neuroimaging and neurostimulation methods that are both noninvasive and the most accessible in Russia: structural, diffusion-weighted, and functional magnetic resonance imaging, as well as transcranial magnetic stimulation. We discuss their scope and perspectives for addressing research questions in neuropsychology and describe possible designs for neu­ropsychological studies in patients with local brain injury and healthy individuals.

Special Issue: The ENIGMA Consortium: the first 10 years., Delineating the association of age and cortical thickness in healthy individuals is critical given the association of cortical thickness with cognition and behavior. Previous research has shown that robust estimates of the association between age and brain morphometry require large-scale studies. In response, we used cross-sectional data from 17,075 individuals aged 3–90 years from the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium to infer age-related changes in cortical thickness. We used fractional polynomial (FP) regression to quantify the association between age and cortical thickness, and we computed normalized growth centiles using the parametric Lambda, Mu, and Sigma method. Interindividual variability was estimated using meta-analysis and one-way analysis of variance. For most regions, their highest cortical thickness value was observed in childhood. Age and cortical thickness showed a negative association; the slope was steeper up to the third decade of life and more gradual thereafter; notable exceptions to this general pattern were entorhinal, temporopolar, and anterior cingulate cortices. Interindividual variability was largest in temporal and frontal regions across the lifespan. Age and its FP combinations explained up to 59% variance in cortical thickness. Recent studies at the interface between psychiatry and neuroscience demonstrate a trend towards the investigation of single significant clinical characteristics of mental disorders in contrast to the analysis of a mental disorder as a homogeneous nosological unit. Thus, a large body of studies is focused on auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia, which are one of the core positive symptoms of the disorder and an important diagnostic criterion. Nevertheless, the neuropsychological and neurophysiological mechanisms of AVH in patients with schizophrenia remain debatable. In this paper, we will review the main neurocognitive models of AVH in schizophrenia, including models of intrusive cognitions and poor inhibitory control, a model of attentional shift to inner auditory stimuli and an inability to reallocate its resources, a model of expectation maximization, a model of working memory deficit, a model of poor source-monitoring, models of AVH within cultural-historical approach, and a model of impaired verbal self-monitoring in inner speech. The results of several neuroimaging and neurophysiological studies relevant to the models are also highlighted. We conclude that schizophrenia patients with AVH demonstrate deficits in executive functions and language, or rather a poor cross-functional interaction between them.

The subject of research in the article is the degeneration of the first form with a monoharmonic change in the form factor and provided that the pulsation frequency of the "forms" of oscillations reaches the second partial frequency. The goal is to assess the possibility of degeneration of the i-th form of oscillations under various laws of change in the exciting effect and to analyze this phenomenon. The objectives of the study are to build principles for assessing the impact of high-frequency pulsations of system parameters on the free oscillations of the latter. Applied methods: description of dynamic models by differential equations; frequency analysis; formation of amplitude-frequency characteristics. The obtained results: for a dynamic model with certain indicators of the leading and driven links, it was determined that with a harmonious change in the motion function with a pulsation frequency that exceeds one, when the ratio of the damping coefficients is greater than one, the effect of degeneration of the first mode of vibration is observed, as a result of which the oscillation frequency of the driven link practically corresponds to the second form. The practical significance of the work lies in the construction of a model for the formation of frequency characteristics of a dynamic model with a high-frequency pulsation of the parameters of the latter. To identify these effects, one has to abandon the traditional ideas about the smallness of inertial components caused by the nonstationarity of vibration modes.

Examines the opportunities that are provided through the using of interactive technologies in the teaching of disciplines of the mathematical cycle. These disciplines are basic in the training of future economists and managers. Examples of the positive impact of using the “flipped” classroom technology on the perception of new material in the context of online learning are given. And also praxis of using elements of gamification for the formation of students’ competencies related to the use of the mathematical apparatus in their future professional activities are demonstrated.

The analysis of heterogeneity in cognition and brain functioning in patients with schizophrenia seems promising for a deeper understanding of the disorder as well as treatment individualization. As language production and its executive control are disturbed in schizophrenia but may be heterogeneous in severity across patients and related to outcome, we aimed to compare the neuropsychological and neuroimaging measures related to these processes in patients with long-term schizophrenia spectrum disorders (mean illness duration of 20.3 ± 6.0 years) characterized by diverse clinical and functional statuses. Forty-four male patients and 18 age-comparable healthy males participated in the study. The participants performed four verbal fluency tasks (VF) and underwent resting-state fMRI. K-means clustering based on PANSS subscales and the PSP total score allocated patients to subgroups with better (S1; n = 15) and worse (S2; n = 29) outcomes. Between-group differences in VF performance and the whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) of the two seeds (the inferior frontal gyrus and the supplementary motor cortex) in the left hemisphere were analyzed. S1 demonstrated better performance in the letter and non-structured VF conditions compared to S2, and S1 did not differ from the healthy controls. Furthermore, S1 had higher FC between the left inferior frontal gyrus and a region in the left postcentral/precentral gyri and superior parietal lobule compared to S2 and the healthy controls. The latter finding merits attention in the context of resilience mechanisms in schizophrenia patients with more benign outcome

Narrative discourse is investigated in clinical and healthy populations. This study explored the discourse strategies used to tell stories, comparing the patterns of people with left- and right-hemisphere brain damage, as well as healthy speakers. We analyzed picture-elicited discourses by four people with aphasia, two people with right hemisphere damage, and four healthy speakers. We examined their microlinguistic properties, as well as macrolinguistic features, such as the discourse production type of utterances and patterns of story component usage. We identified two storytelling strategies used by the speakers: a narrative strategy marked by a prevalence of narrative discourse production type utterances and scarce use of evaluation clauses, and a quasi-narrative strategy with the opposite pattern. These strategies were used by both healthy speakers and participants with brain damage.

[Background]: Morphology of the human cerebral cortex differs across psychiatric disorders, with neurobiology and developmental origins mostly undetermined. Deviations in the tangential growth of the cerebral cortex during pre/perinatal periods may be reflected in individual variations in cortical surface area later in life., [Methods]: Interregional profiles of group differences in surface area between cases and controls were generated using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging from 27,359 individuals including those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, and high general psychopathology (through the Child Behavior Checklist). Similarity of interregional profiles of group differences in surface area and prenatal cell-specific gene expression was assessed., [Results]: Across the 11 cortical regions, group differences in cortical area for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, schizophrenia, and Child Behavior Checklist were dominant in multimodal association cortices. The same interregional profiles were also associated with interregional profiles of (prenatal) gene expression specific to proliferative cells, namely radial glia and intermediate progenitor cells (greater expression, larger difference), as well as differentiated cells, namely excitatory neurons and endothelial and mural cells (greater expression, smaller difference). Finally, these cell types were implicated in known pre/perinatal risk factors for psychosis. Genes coexpressed with radial glia were enriched with genes implicated in congenital abnormalities, birth weight, hypoxia, and starvation. The purpose of the article is to analyze the impact of concept mapping on the level and quality of assimilation of learning material in higher mathematics in the process of independent study. Methodology. Based on a review of the main provisions of modern theory of learning and generalization of research results presented in scientific papers on the scope of application of concept maps in the learning process, such a training experiment was conducted. For students of the two experimental groups on a certain topic of the discipline “Higher Mathematics” were offered to build conceptual maps in addition to the common teaching methods. It considered as an independent creative task. In the other two groups, which were under control, students had to study the same topic of the discipline, using traditional methods. Results. It was determined that the results of the colloquium composed of students of experimental groups were significantly higher than those of students of control groups who did not use mapping as a method of learning during independent work. The average score obtained by students of experimental groups for the colloquium was almost 80 points, while for students of control groups it was only 72 points. Using Student’s test, the significance of the difference between the values of the sample averages of these indicators proved. If we compare the average scores for different types of tasks, the most significant was the difference in the performance of heuristic tasks, which reflect the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to solve practical problems of economic content. Conclusions. The positive influence of the use of concept mapping in independent work of students established, which proves the thesis about the feasibility of using concept mapping as a learning tool. Further introduction of concept maps in the educational process should be based on the development of complex theoretical and practical, as well as competency-oriented tasks.

BackgroundPositive symptoms are a useful predictor of aggression in schizophrenia. Although a similar pattern of abnormal brain structures related to both positive symptoms and aggression has been reported, this observation has not yet been confirmed in a single sample.MethodTo study the association between positive symptoms and aggression in schizophrenia on a neurobiological level, a prospective meta-analytic approach was employed to analyze harmonized structural neuroimaging data from 10 research centers worldwide. We analyzed brain MRI scans from 902 individuals with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia and 952 healthy controls.ResultsThe result identified a widespread cortical thickness reduction in schizophrenia compared to their controls. Two separate meta-regression analyses revealed that a common pattern of reduced cortical gray matter thickness within the left lateral temporal lobe and right midcingulate cortex was significantly associated with both positive symptoms and aggression.ConclusionThese findings suggested that positive symptoms such as formal thought disorder and auditory misperception, combined with cognitive impairments reflecting difficulties in deploying an adaptive control toward perceived threats, could escalate the likelihood of aggression in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with an increased risk of life-long cognitive impairments, age-related chronic disease, and premature mortality. We investigated evidence for advanced brain ageing in adult SZ patients, and whether this was associated with clinical characteristics in a prospective meta-analytic study conducted by the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. The study included data from 26 cohorts worldwide, with a total of 2803 SZ patients (mean age 34.2 years; range 18-72 years; 67% male) and 2598 healthy controls (mean age 33.8 years, range 18-73 years, 55% male). Brain-predicted age was individually estimated using a model trained on independent data based on 68 measures of cortical thickness and surface area, 7 subcortical volumes, lateral ventricular volumes and total intracranial volume, all derived from T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Deviations from a healthy brain ageing trajectory were assessed by the difference between brain-predicted age and chronological age (brain-predicted age difference [brain-PAD]). On average, SZ patients showed a higher brain-PAD of +3.64 years (95% CI: 3.01, 4.26; I2 = 55.28%) compared to controls, after adjusting for age and sex (Cohen’s d = 0.50). Among SZ patients, brain-PAD was not associated with specific clinical characteristics (age of onset, duration of illness, symptom severity, or antipsychotic use and dose). This large-scale collaborative study suggests advanced structural brain ageing in SZ. Longitudinal studies of SZ and a range of mental and somatic health outcomes will help to further evaluate the clinical implications of increased brain-PAD and its ability to be influenced by interventions.

Neuroanatomical abnormalities have been reported along a continuum from at-risk stages, including high schizotypy, to early and chronic psychosis. However, a comprehensive neuroanatomical mapping of schizotypy remains to be established. The authors conducted the first large-scale meta-analyses of cortical and subcortical morphometric patterns of schizotypy in healthy individuals, and compared these patterns with neuroanatomical abnormalities observed in major psychiatric disorders. The sample comprised 3004 unmedicated healthy individuals (12–68 years, 46.5% male) from 29 cohorts of the worldwide ENIGMA Schizotypy working group. Cortical and subcortical effect size maps with schizotypy scores were generated using standardized methods. Pattern similarities were assessed between the schizotypy-related cortical and subcortical maps and effect size maps from comparisons of schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression (MDD) patients with controls. Thicker right medial orbitofrontal/ventromedial prefrontal cortex (mOFC/vmPFC) was associated with higher schizotypy scores (r = 0.067, pFDR = 0.02). The cortical thickness profile in schizotypy was positively correlated with cortical abnormalities in SZ (r = 0.285, pspin = 0.024), but not BD (r = 0.166, pspin = 0.205) or MDD (r = −0.274, pspin = 0.073). The schizotypy-related subcortical volume pattern was negatively correlated with subcortical abnormalities in SZ (rho = −0.690, pspin = 0.006), BD (rho = −0.672, pspin = 0.009), and MDD (rho = −0.692, pspin = 0.004). Comprehensive mapping of schizotypy-related brain morphometry in the general population revealed a significant relationship between higher schizotypy and thicker mOFC/vmPFC, in the absence of confounding effects due to antipsychotic medication or disease chronicity. The cortical pattern similarity between schizotypy and schizophrenia yields new insights into a dimensional neurobiological continuity across the extended psychosis phenotype.

Special Issue: The ENIGMA Consortium: the first 10 years.-- Karolinska Schizophrenia Project (KaSP)., Age has a major effect on brain volume. However, the normative studies available are constrained by small sample sizes, restricted age coverage and significant methodological variability. These limitations introduce inconsistencies and may obscure or distort the lifespan trajectories of brain morphometry. In response, we capitalized on the resources of the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium to examine age-related trajectories inferred from cross-sectional measures of the ventricles, the basal ganglia (caudate, putamen, pallidum, and nucleus accumbens), the thalamus, hippocampus and amygdala using magnetic resonance imaging data obtained from 18,605 individuals aged 3–90 years. All subcortical structure volumes were at their maximum value early in life. The volume of the basal ganglia showed a monotonic negative association with age thereafter; there was no significant association between age and the volumes of the thalamus, amygdala and the hippocampus (with some degree of decline in thalamus) until the sixth decade of life after which they also showed a steep negative association with age. The lateral ventricles showed continuous enlargement throughout the lifespan. Age was positively associated with inter-individual variability in the hippocampus and amygdala and the lateral ventricles. ImportanceThe ENIGMA clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) initiative, the largest pooled CHR-neuroimaging sample to date, aims to discover robust neurobiological markers of psychosis risk in a sample with known heterogeneous outcomes.ObjectiveWe investigated baseline structural neuroimaging differences between CHR subjects and healthy controls (HC), and between CHR participants who later developed a psychotic disorder (CHR-PS+) and those who did not (CHR-PS-). We assessed associations with age by group and conversion status, and similarities between the patterns of effect size maps for psychosis conversion and those found in other large-scale psychosis studies.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsBaseline T1-weighted MRI data were pooled from 31 international sites participating in the ENIGMA CHR Working Group. MRI scans were processed using harmonized protocols and analyzed within a mega- and meta-analysis framework from January-October 2020.Main Outcome(s) and Measure(s)Measures of regional cortical thickness (CT), surface area (SA), and subcortical volumes were extracted from T1-weighted MRI scans. Independent variables were group (CHR, HC) and conversion status (CHR-PS+, CHR-PS-, HC).ResultsThe final dataset consisted of 3,169 participants (CHR=1,792, HC=1,377, age range: 9.5 to 39.8 years, 45% female). Using longitudinal clinical information, we identified CHR-PS+ (N=253) and CHR-PS- (N=1,234). CHR exhibited widespread thinner cortex compared to HC (average d=-0.125, range: -0.09 to -0.17), but not SA or subcortical volume. Thinner cortex in the fusiform, superior temporal, and paracentral regions was associated with psychosis conversion (average d=-0.22). Age showed a stronger negative association with left fusiform and left paracentral CT in HC, compared to CHR-PS+. Regional CT psychosis conversion effect sizes resembled patterns of CT alterations observed in other ENIGMA studies of psychosis.Conclusions and RelevanceWe provide evidence for widespread subtle CT reductions in CHR. The pattern of regions displaying greater CT alterations in CHR-PS+ were similar to those reported in other large-scale investigations of psychosis. Additionally, a subset of these regions displayed abnormal age associations. Widespread CT disruptions coupled with abnormal age associations in CHR may point to disruptions in postnatal brain developmental processes.Key PointsQuestionHow do baseline brain morphometric features relate to later psychosis conversion in individuals at clinical high risk (CHR)?FindingsIn the largest coordinated international analysis to date, reduced baseline cortical thickness, but not cortical surface area or subcortical volume, was more pronounced in CHR, in a manner highly consistent with thinner cortex in established psychosis. IntroductionMachine learning has increasingly been applied to classification of psychosis spectrum in neuroimaging research. However, a number of multimodal studies using MRI and electroencephalography (EEG) is quite limited.ObjectivesTo assess the power of multimodal structural MRI (sMRI) and EEG data to provide pairwise discrimination between first-episode schizophrenia (FES) patients, individuals at ultra-high-risk of psychosis (UHR), and healthy controls (HC) using machine learning algorithms.Methods46 FES male patients, 39 UHR individuals, and 54 matched HC underwent sMRI (3T Philips scanner) and electroencephalography. T1-weighted images were processed via FreeSurfer to obtain cortical and subcortical measures. L2 regularized logistic regression was used to evaluate the efficacy of diagnostic prediction.ResultsThe accuracies of pairwise discriminations were: 87% for FES vs HC (specificity 83%, sensitivity 91%); 77% for FES vs UHR (specificity 76%, sensitivity 79%); 75% for UHR vs HC (specificity 77%, sensitivity 73%).ConclusionsCurrent findings suggest that the patterns of anatomical and functional variability have potential as biomarkers for discrimination between schizophrenia, UHR, and healthy subjects. Furthermore, results show that the selection and multimodality of feature types are important. Specifically, adding EEG data to morphometric measures improved accuracy rates in FES vs HC and FES vs UHR contrasts, whereas standalone EEG data provided higher accuracy compared with morphometric or multimodal data in UHR vs HC discrimination. Expectedly, predictive power for the UHR was smaller than for the FES due to its intermediate anatomical features, located between those observed in healthy controls and those found in patients. Background Negative symptoms can be seen to represent a continuum from subclinical manifestations in the general population to severe symptoms in schizophrenia. Neuroanatomical studies show evidence of fronto-striatal structural abnormalities linked to negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia (Walton et al. 2018). However, it remains an open question whether these structural associations are also observed in ostensibly healthy individuals reporting subclinical negative symptoms. The present study used structural T1-weighted brain imaging data from the ENIGMA Schizotypy Working Group to investigate the relationship between subclinical negative symptoms and fronto-striatal structural measures. Methods We included 2,235 healthy unmedicated individuals with varying levels of schizotypy from 17 centers around the world. The complete sample had a weighted mean (range) age of 29.2 (15.9–39.6) and 59.4% (51–100) were male. Subclinical negative symptoms were assessed at each site separately using factor scores from self-report schizotypy questionnaires (i.e., the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences, the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences, or the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire). Based on prior studies in schizophrenia, we obtained cortical thickness from 22 frontal regions-of-interest (ROIs) and subcortical volumes from 6 striatal ROIs using FreeSurfer. We performed meta-analyses of effect sizes (standardized regression coefficients) from a model predicting mean cortical thickness by subclinical negative symptom scores, adjusting for age, sex, and site. The same analysis was repeated for subcortical volumes including intracranial volume as additional covariate. Results Meta-analyses revealed significant positive associations between subclinical negative symptoms and cortical thickness of the left frontal pole (βstd=0.091; pFDR=0.009), right medial orbitofrontal cortex (βstd=0.083; pFDR=0.009) and right anterior cingulate cortex (βstd=0.07; pFDR=0.011). Discussion Using a large sample of healthy unmedicated individuals with varying levels of schizotypal personality traits, this ENIGMA meta-analysis showed that subclinical negative symptoms are associated with thicker prefrontal cortex. The present data are contrary to previous findings in schizophrenia, which demonstrates a relationship between negative symptoms and lower prefrontal cortical thickness (Walton et al. 2018). These divergent neural correlates suggest that thicker cortex could be a potential compensatory mechanism preventing individuals with schizotypy from the clinical manifestation of severe negative symptoms. Alternatively, greater prefrontal cortical thickness could also be associated with pathological processes along the negative symptom continuum prior to clinical manifestation.

The paper addresses the issue of Russian English as a world variety used within such multicultural domain as Instagram which is an on-line social networking service. Building on an earlier idea, the paper puts forward a hypothesis regarding the existence of Instagram Russian English (IRE) which in general follows the pattern of Russian English in terms of its distinctive lexical, grammatical and pragmatic characteristics, the three-lectal continuum and the verbalization of the Russian mindset of its speakers. Therefore, IRE does reflect the Russian culture and mentality via both linguistic and pragmatic means.

To determine neuroanatomical peculiarities of grey matter in some regions of the prefrontal cortex and several subcortical structures in patients with juvenile shift like schizophrenia (F20 ICD-10).Forty-three young male patients and 54 mentally healthy men without family history of mental diseases underwent structural MRI with T1 high resolution images.As compared to mentally healthy subjects, there was a decrease of grey matter thickness in all tested regions of the prefrontal cortex in patients. No between-group differences in subcortical structures volumes were found. No correlations between structural changes and psychopathological symptoms were observed.Structural abnormalities of the frontal lobes in juvenile shift like schizophrenia are not associated with severity of psychopathological symptoms.Цель исследования. Материал и методы. Обследованы 43 больных и 54 психически здоровых мужчин, средний возраст которых был 22 года. Основными методами были психопатологическое исследование и магнитно-резонансная томография (МРТ) головного мозга с получением Т1-взвешенных изображений высокого разрешения. Результаты. В группе больных шизофренией по сравнению с группой здоровых выявлено снижение толщины серого вещества коры во всех исследуемых сегментах префронтальной области, но межгрупповых различий по показателям объемов подкорковых образований не было. Статистически значимых корреляций между выявленными структурными изменениями и показателями выраженности психопатологических расстройств также установлено не было. Заключение. Полученные данные показывают, что структурные аномалии лобных отделов головного мозга при юношеской приступообразной шизофрении не сопряжены с выраженностью психопатологических явлений.

Conclusions: Comprehensive mapping of schizotypy-related brain morphometry in the general population revealed a significant relationship between higher schizotypy and thicker mOFC/vmPFC, in the absence of confounding effects due to antipsychotic medication or disease chronicity. The cortical pattern similarity between schizotypy and schizophrenia yields new insights into a dimensional neurobiological continuity across the extended psychosis phenotype. Recent advances in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence have brought the opportunity to automate facial attractiveness evaluation. A range of studies have been addressed to the task and have achieved reasonable prediction accuracy. However, most of these methods work well only on photos with restrictions on expression, posture, illumination, but not on real-world face photos. This work is aimed to improve the attractiveness assessment state-of-the-art in both cases. To this end, an approach that employs transfer learning methodology as well as shallow machine learning was proposed for highly accurate facial attractiveness prediction. Specifically, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Facenet, originally designed and pre-trained for the face recognition task is utilized. High-level facial features were extracted by using the network and then fed into Support Vector Regression in order to predict facial attractiveness. Extensive experiments conducted on widely used facial beauty datasets Gray and SCUT-FBP5500 demonstrated that the proposed method outperformed other attractiveness prediction approaches. The experimental results also confirmed the effectiveness of the method in both constrained and unconstrained environment.

Background Cortical neuroanatomical abnormalities have been reported along a continuum between individuals with chronic schizophrenia, first-episode psychosis, clinical high risk for psychosis, and healthy individuals self-reporting subclinical psychotic-like experiences (or schizotypy). Recently, the Schizophrenia Working Group within the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) consortium provided meta-analytic evidence for robust cortical thickness abnormalities in schizophrenia, while also indicating that these abnormalities are influenced by illness severity and treatment with antipsychotic medications. In this context, schizotypy research allows the investigation of cortical neuroanatomy associated with the expression of subclinical psychotic-like symptoms without the potential influence of a psychotic illness, its severity, or the use of antipsychotics. This study presents the first large-scale imaging meta-analysis of cortical thickness in schizotypy using standardized methods from 23 datasets worldwide. Methods Cortical thickness and surface area were assessed in MRI scans of 2,695 healthy individuals (mean [range] age of 29.1 [17–55.8], 46.3% male) who had also completed validated self-report schizotypy questionnaires. Each site processed their local T1-weighted MRI scans using FreeSurfer and, following the protocol outlined in the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group study, extracted cortical thickness for 70 Desikan-Killiany (DK) atlas regions (34 regions per hemisphere + left and right hemisphere mean thickness). At each site, partial correlation analyses were performed between regional cortical thickness by ROI and total schizotypy scores in R, predicting the left, right and mean cortical thickness, adjusting for sex, age and site. Random-effects meta-analyses of partial correlation effect sizes for each of the DK atlas regions were performed using R’s metafor package. False discovery rate (pFDR < .05) was used to control for multiple comparisons. Results We found significant positive associations between subclinical psychotic-like experiences and mean cortical thickness of the medial orbitofrontal cortex (r = .077; pFDR = .006) and the frontal pole (r = .073; pFDR = .006). When assessed separately by hemisphere, meta-analysis revealed a significant positive association between subclinical psychotic-like experiences and cortical thickness of the left medial orbitofrontal cortex (r = .066; pFDR = .044), and at trend-level with the right medial orbitofrontal cortex (r = .062; pFDR = .053) and the left frontal pole (r = .062; pFDR = .053). No significant associations were observed for surface area. Discussion Worldwide cooperative analyses of large-scale brain imaging data support a profile of cortical thickness abnormalities involving prefrontal cortical regions positively related to schizotypy in healthy individuals. These findings are not secondary to potential influences of disease chronicity or antipsychotic medication on the neuroanatomical correlates of psychotic-like experiences. The directionality of the observed meta-analytical effects in schizotypy is opposite to those previously reported in patients with schizophrenia (i.e., thinner cortex). The present findings of increased thickness may indicate early microstructural deficits (e.g. in myelination) that contribute to vulnerability for psychosis. Alternatively, these may reflect mechanisms of resilience associated with the expression of subclinical manifestations of psychotic symptoms in otherwise healthy individuals.

To determine neurophysiological characteristics of patients with long-term follow up (20 years) and to find correlations between neurophysiological parameters and clinical features of schizophrenia.The patients were divided into three groups: with predomination of personality changes (group 1,In group 3, the statistically significant higher frequencies of theta-rhythm and lower of alpha-rhythm were found. Also, theta frequency correlated with PANSS positive scores. The significant intergroup differences by auditory oddball P300 were lacked. Основными методами исследования были психопатологический и нейрофизиологический с изучением вызванных потенциалов.Установлена статистически значимо большая частота тета-ритма и меньшая частота альфа-ритма в 3-й группе, при этом величина доминирующей частоты тета-ритма коррелировала (с положительным знаком) с суммарной оценкой выраженности позитивных расстройств по шкале PANSS. Статистически значимых межгрупповых различий по параметрам волны Р300 слуховых вызванных потенциалов, регистрируемых в парадигме oddball, выявлено не было. The profile of cortical neuroanatomical abnormalities in schizophrenia is not fully understood, despite hundreds of published structural brain imaging studies. This study presents the first meta-analysis of cortical thickness and surface area abnormalities in schizophrenia conducted by the ENIGMA (Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Schizophrenia Working Group.The study included data from 4474 individuals with schizophrenia (mean age, 32.3 years; range, 11-78 years; 66% male) and 5098 healthy volunteers (mean age, 32.8 years; range, 10-87 years; 53% male) assessed with standardized methods at 39 centers worldwide.Compared with healthy volunteers, individuals with schizophrenia have widespread thinner cortex (left/right hemisphere: Cohen's d = -0.530/-0.516) and smaller surface area (left/right hemisphere: Cohen's d = -0.251/-0.254), with the largest effect sizes for both in frontal and temporal lobe regions. Regional group differences in cortical thickness remained significant when statistically controlling for global cortical thickness, suggesting regional specificity. In contrast, effects for cortical surface area appear global. Case-control, negative, cortical thickness effect sizes were two to three times larger in individuals receiving antipsychotic medication relative to unmedicated individuals. Negative correlations between age and bilateral temporal pole thickness were stronger in individuals with schizophrenia than in healthy volunteers. Regional cortical thickness showed significant negative correlations with normalized medication dose, symptom severity, and duration of illness and positive correlations with age at onset.The findings indicate that the ENIGMA meta-analysis approach can achieve robust findings in clinical neuroscience studies; also, medication effects should be taken into account in future genetic association studies of cortical thickness in schizophrenia.

The article discusses the problem of heteroskedasticity, which can arise in the process of calculating econometric models of large dimension and ways to overcome it. Heteroskedasticity distorts the value of the true standard deviation of the prediction errors. This can be accompanied by both an increase and a decrease in the confidence interval. We gave the principles of implementing the most common tests that are used to detect heteroskedasticity in constructing linear regression models, and compared their sensitivity. The advantage of this paper is that real empirical data are used to test for heteroskedasticity. For implementing the testing there is developed the special software with using of the algorithmic programming language MATLAB. The purpose of the article is to describe the functions implemented in the form of m-files (MATLAB environment files) to check for heteroskedasticity in multifactor regression models. To do this, modified algorithms for the tests on heteroskedasticity were used. Experimental studies of the work of the program were carried out for various linear regression models both the models of the Department of Higher Mathematics and Mathematical Methods in Economy of Simon Kuznets Kharkiv National University of Economics, and econometric models which were published recently by leading journals.

BACKGROUND: Neuroanatomical studies have provided some evidence for a neurobiological continuity between psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia and subclinical psychotic-like experiences as identified via self-report questionnaires (or schizotypy) in otherwise healthy individuals. Despite a number of structural brain imaging studies published in subjects with schizotypy, these have often been limited by relatively small sample sizes. This study represents the first meta-analysis of structural MRI scans in schizotypy assessed with standardized methods at 17 centres worldwide. METHODS: The total sample included in the case-control meta-analysis involved 496 subjects with high schizotypy and 588 comparison subjects with low schizotypy as identified with validated self-report schizotypy questionnaires (i.e., the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences, the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences, or the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire). Left and right lateral ventricle, thalamus, caudate, putamen, pallidum, accumbens, hippocampus and amygdala volumes, as well as intracranial volumes (ICV), were obtained with FreeSurfer from high-resolution T1-weighted structural brain scans locally by each site. Analyses of individual subject data were also performed by the site that contributed the sample, using code created within the ENIGMA collaboration. Group differences for each ROI within each sample were examined using univariate linear regression analysis in R predicting the left, right and mean subcortical volumes with group (low or high schizotypy) controlling for age, sex, site and ICV. For each sample, Cohen’s d effect sizes for each ROI were computed based on the group contrast t-statistics. Random-effects meta-analyses of Cohen’s d effect sizes for each ROI were performed using R’s metafor package. RESULTS: For the case-control meta-analysis, mean (range) age across samples was 29.2 (19.2–44.9) years for subjects with high schizotypy and 28.5 (19.4–42.5) years for subjects with low schizotypy. High and low schizotypy samples were on average 48.6% (25–100) and 49.0% (8–100) male. Compared to low schizotypy, people with high schizotypy had smaller left nucleus accumbens volumes (Cohen’s d = -0.13, p = 0.04). No other significant meta-analytical effects were identified. DISCUSSION: Worldwide cooperative analyses of brain imaging data support a profile of subcortical abnormalities involving the ventral striatum in healthy individuals with subclinical psychotic-like experiences. Though the effect size is small, the result is consistent with findings in schizophrenia patients and suggesting that these effects are not secondary to potential influences of disease chronicity or antipsychotic medication. The lack of significant effects in other reported regions in schizophrenia research may indicate that further subcortical abnormalities may not be present or detectable in schizotypy samples and could reflect mechanisms of resilience in this population.

IntroductionThe aim of the study was to analyze the microstructural and metabolic features of the corpus callosum in recently onset schizophrenia.Objectives13 young (17–28 years old) male patients with recently onset schizophrenia (F20, ICD-10) and 15 sex and age matched mentally healthy subjects were examined.Methods3 T Philips Achieva scanner with 8-channel SENSE coil was used. DTI was conducted with EPI SENSE (TR = 9431 ms; TE = 70 ms). The values of diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy (FA), radial (RD) and parallel (PD) diffusivity were calculated using workstation Philips EBWS 2.6.3.4. Spectroscopic voxel (2 × 1 × 1 cm) was placed consequently in the corpus callosum genu and splenium. PRESS (TR/TE = 1500/40) was used.ResultsIn patients, increased ADC (P = 0.02) and RD (P = 0.008), decreased FA (P = 0.008) and NAA (P = 0.03) were found in the corpus callosum genu, No intergroup differences by PD, Cho, Cr, Glx were found in this area. Also, no statistically significant intergroup differences were observed for the DTI and MRS characteristics of the corpus callosum splenium.ConclusionsIt has been shown that RD increase is associated with demyelination process. So, an increase of RD in the present study could reflect demyelination in CC genu. Cells membranes abnormalities should lead to an increase of Cho which was not found. NAA reduction could be caused by reduction of axonal integrity. The latter process is considered to precede demyelination and not to be accompanied by PD rise. Thus, the present study revealed axonal integrity reduction and low demyelination in the genu of the corpus callosum in the early stages of schizophrenia.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

IntroductionThe aim of this study was the analysis of dynamics of motor cortex metabolite in the norm and in early stage of schizophrenia in period of BOLD response to event related single stimulus.ObjectivesThe patients group consisted of 9 mails of 16–28 years old in initial stage of schizophrenia and in remission. The group of 9 age matched healthy mails was used as a control.MethodsPhillips Achieva 3.0 T scanner was used for the study. Volume of interest in motor cortex was localized on the base of fMRI. 1Н МR spectra were run using synchronization of FID signals acquisition (PRESS, TE = 30 ms TR = 3000 ms) with dynamics of BOLD response at the same paradigm.ResultsThe BOLD signal in both groups demonstrated maximum at the 6th s after target stimulus, however its value was reliably lover in schizophrenia in comparison with the control. The only [NAA] in normal motor cortex was changed after stimulation. The stable values of [NAA], [Cr] and [Cho] were observed in dynamic of resting state as well. [NAA] in normal cortex statistically significantly decreased at the 12th s after stimulus presentation and returned to initial value at the 15th s.ConclusionDifferent behavior of [NAA] in the norm and schizophrenia might be related with a difference in location (or activity) of aspartoacylaze (ASPA). We use 31P MRS in presence of visual stimulation that allows neuronal energy-consuming processes studying.ObjectiveRevealing of stimulation effects on high-energy phosphates (PCr, ATP) in early-stage schizophrenia.AimDiscovery of energy processes contribution in schizophrenia pathogenesis.MethodsTwelve right-handed 18–26 years old male patients with early-staged schizophrenia (F20, ICD-10) and 20 age-matched healthy right-handed controls. Spectra were acquired on Philips Achieva 3.0 T using Rapid Biomed 31P/1H birdcage coil and 2D ISIS pulse sequence. fMRI was used for accurate 2D slice positioning, spectroscopy voxels containing primary visual cortex (V1) were averaged (see Fig. 1). Two 31P spectra of V1 were obtained: firstly in resting state and then during 6 minutes of continuous stimulation by 6 Hz flashing checkerboard. Spectra were processed in jMRUI.ResultsExcitation reduced PCr in the norm and had no effect on schizophrenia (see Fig. 2). No excitation-induced ATP changes in both groups were revealed.ConclusionAlteration in PCr behavior in this study witnesses for deviations in energy-consuming processes in schizophrenia. L’article retrace l’histoire du catalogage des collections d’ouvrages imprimés et manuscrits, cartes, plans, dessins et gravures ayant appartenu à Pierre le Grand et conservées aujourd’hui pour la plupart à la bibliothèque de l’Académie des sciences (BAN) à Saint-Pétersbourg. Transmise à la bibliothèque en 1725-1728, la collection d’ouvrages fut cataloguée une première fois par Bogdanov en 1742-1744. Depuis le milieu du xxe siècle, une recherche conduite par M. N. Murzanova, E. I. Bobrova et V. A. Petrov permit de retrouver les inventaires de 1725-1728. Parallèlement, ils entreprirent de rechercher systématiquement les ouvrages portant des marques de Pierre le Grand. Ce travail aboutit, entre autres, à un premier catalogue de la « bibliothèque de Pierre le Grand » en 1978. Les recherches actuelles visent à affiner et à préciser cette première approche en procédant à des recherches, dans les archives, sur l’histoire de chaque ouvrage. Une équipe de la BAN conduite par Irina Lebedeva, a procédé ainsi à une description systématique, publiée en 2003, des livres manuscrits ayant appartenu au tsar. L’étape ultérieure sera une description des ouvrages imprimés. The history of Peter the Great’s library and its catalogs. – The article traces the history of the cataloging process of the collection of books, manuscripts, maps, plans, drawings, and engravings that belonged to Peter the Great and are for the most part housed in the Russian Academy of Sciences Library (BAN) in St. Petersburg. The collection was transferred to the library in 1725-1728 and was first cataloged by Bogdanov in 1724-1744. In the mid twentieth century, M. N. Murzanova, E. I. Bobrova, and V. A. Petrov initiated a research that led to the retrieval of the 1725-1728 inventories. They simultaneously launched a systematic search of volumes with marks indicating Peter the Great’s ownership which led to the creation of a first catalog of “Peter the Great’s library” in 1978. A finer investigation is presently going on consisting in archival research on the history of each volume. Thus, under the leadership of Irina Lebedeva, a BAN research team completed and published in 2003 a systematic description of the manuscripts that belonged to the tsar. Their next step is a description of his printed books.

Functional and structural brain abnormalities in people at high risk for psychosis is a subject of intensive studies in biological psychiatry over the last decades. We studied correlations between neurophysiological and neuroimaging parameters in ultra-high risk patients.Fifty-six patients, aged 17-25 years, with nonpsychotic mental disorders were examined. The control group included 30 age- and sex-matched healthy people. Neurophysiological study measured sensory gating. Proton MR-spectroscopy was used to study metabolic processes in the brain (index for glutamate/glutamine, N-acetylaspartate and choline containing compounds in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and thalamus of both hemispheres as well as in the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum).We found the abnormality of sensory gating in patients at ultra-high risk for endogenous psychosis that was not correlated with the metabolic parameters. The latter were normal or were normalized during treatment.Цель исследования. В последние десятилетия в биологической психиатрии большое внимание уделяется особенностям функциональных и структурных аномалий головного мозга в группах высокого риска по развитию эндогенных психозов. Изучали сопряженность нейрофизиологических и нейровизуализационных показателей в случаях наличия ультравысокого риска по развитию эндогенных психозов. Настоящее сообщение представляет некоторые результаты начального этапа подобного исследования. Материал и методы. Обследовали 56 больных 17-25 лет с непсихотическими психическими расстройствами. Контрольная группа состояла из 30 подобранных по возрасту и полу психически здоровых. Нейрофизиологические исследования были направлены на получение показателей, характеризующих способность головного мозга 'регулировать' объем поступающей информации (sensory gating). Одновременно методом локализационной протонной МР-спектроскопии определялись некоторые характеристики обменных процессов в головном мозге (величины индекса глутамат/глутамин, N-ацетиласпартата и холинсодержащих веществ в дорсолатеральной префронтальной коре и таламусе левого и правого полушария, а также колене и валике мозолистого тела). Результаты и заключение. Получены данные, позволяющие предположить нарушение 'сенсорного фильтра' у больных из группы ультравысокого риска по развитию эндогенных психозов, которые не коррелируют с изучавшимися метаболическими показателями. Последние были в норме или нормализовались в процессе лечения.
