Abstract

A data-driven method was applied to Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV made with the STAR detector at RHIC to isolate pseudorapidity distance Δη-dependent and Δη-independent correlations by using two- and four-particle azimuthal cumulant measurements. We identified a Δη-independent component of the correlation, which is dominated by anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations. It was also found to be independent of η within the measured range of pseudorapidity |η|0.7. Keywords: Heavy-ion, Flow, Nonflow

Abstract

We report measurements of Υ meson production in p + p, d + Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Υ yield to the measured cross section in p + p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d + Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p + p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon (1S + 2S + 3S) in the rapidity range |y| < 1 in d + Au collisions of RdAu = 0.79 ± 0.24(stat.) ± 0.03(syst.) ± 0.10(p + p syst.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au + Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R AA = 0.49 ±0.1(stat.) ±0.02(syst.) ±0.06(p + p syst.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au + Au collisions. Abstract

We report J / ψ spectra for transverse momenta p T > 5 GeV / c at mid-rapidity in p + p and Au + Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV . The inclusive J / ψ spectrum and the extracted B-hadron feed-down are compared to models incorporating different production mechanisms. We observe significant suppression of the J / ψ yields for p T > 5 GeV / c in 0–30% central Au + Au collisions relative to the p + p yield scaled by the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions in Au + Au collisions. In 30–60% mid-central collisions, no such suppression is observed. The level of suppression is consistently less than that of high- p T π ± and low- p T J / ψ at RHIC and high- p T J / ψ at the LHC.

Abstract

Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was applied to detect antifungal compounds both in Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica oleracea after elicited by various biotic and abiotic elicitors.From TLC bioassays the only strong zone of inhibition detected after challenged by Pseudomonas syringae pv.maculicola was from Arabidopsis tissue and later confirmed by spectrophotometry as camalexin but no corresponding phytoalexin was found in broccoli leaf.

Abstract

Forty adult patients (average age 40 years), with the clinical and radiological features of the Chiari malformations, were seen at the Toronto Western Hospital between 1967 and 1984. Surgical confirmation of the diagnosis was obtained in 32 cases; of these, 23 were classified as Chiari I malformation while 9 fulfilled the anatomic criteria of Chiari II. The patient population consisted of 22 males and 18 females. Common presenting symptoms included head and neck pain (60%), sensory complaints (60%), upper extremity weakness (42%), and gait disturbance (40%). Neurological findings included signs of central cord dysfunction (73%), long-tract motor and/or sensory findings (58%), brainstem signs (38%), cerebellar dysfunction (18%), and increased intracranial pressure (15%). The majority of patients underwent myelography with or without computed tomography of the cervical-medullary junction. Two recent patients had 0.15T MRI scans which helped demonstrate an intramedullary syrinx. Thirty-three patients underwent 47 operative procedures (discounting spinal fusion and CSF shunt revisions). Open surgical management was performed in 32 patients, with CSF shunting along in one patient. Five patients (15%) incurred surgical complications within a six week postoperative period. Follow-up to date, ranges from one month to 11 years. In the 33 surgically treated patients, 18 are improved (55%), 10 are neurologically stable (30%), and five have worsened clinically (15%), including one death. Based on this study it appears that the Chiari II malformation maybe more common in adults than previously recognized. Surgical intervention has a favourable outcome in the majority of patients but a significant proportion continue to deteriorate.

Abstract

This chapter discusses the use of radio frequency spectrum management. The uses of the radio frequency spectrum are many, varied, and dynamic. The most efficient sharing of the spectrum between users requires detailed rules, procedures, and practices. The formulation and implementation of these rules is referred to as spectrum management. The international telecommunication union (ITU), which carries out this function on the global level, allocates frequency bands for various categories of communications. Each nation, which participates in ITU meetings, is a party to fashioning the sharing rules and agrees to abide by them. Spectrum management is a problem in allocation and management and the situation is being complicated by the increasing number of different services requiring blocks of frequencies in the spectrum. The ITU has divided the world into three regions for the purpose of international spectrum allocation. Region 1 covers Europe, Africa, and the USSR; region 2 includes North and South America; and region 3 is the remainder of the world. The allocations are set out in the international table of frequency allocations; allocations in some instances differ from one region to another. Because the demand for spectrum exceeds the availability of the spectrum resource, more than one radio service might be allocated within a given portion of the spectrum in the same geographical region.

15. Multiplex Fluorescent RT-PCR to Quantify Leukemic Fusion Transcripts

Abstract

The detection of chimeric transcripts derived from aberrant chromosomal fusion events provides an exceptionally valuable tool for the diagnosis of leukemia. We have developed a simple, inexpensive, reproducible, and automated method to quantify RT-PCR products. Our approach utilizes fluorescent PCR for the co-amplification of the specific fusion transcript with an internal control (HPRT). We have also combined the advantages of real-time quantitative PCR, namely continuous fluorescent detection of PCR products with the low cost of an endpoint assay by examining in a novel manner the amount of fluorescent PCR product generated during the exponential phase of amplification. This has been achieved by using the automated loading and quantification capacity of a laser-induced fluorescence capillary electrophoresis system, the ABI Prism® 310A, so that we can effectively monitor amplification during the exponential phase cheaply, reproducibly, and in a sensitive manner. We have carefully verified our new technique using five leukemia cell lines, each expressing a different fusion transcript. Specificity and reproducibility (CV within 10%) have been examined and demonstrate the excellent precision of our technology. The high sensitivity levels of at least 10-4 to 10-60 btained for the serial dilutions of the five cell lines validate the choice of our fluorescent PCR as a comparable method to other more complicated and expensive methods. Our results have allowed us to quantify PCR products and the amount of chimeric mRNA originating from the translocation breakpoint. We demonstrate that our novel fluorescent method is useful to detect and quantify residual leukemic cells in patients undergoing therapy.
