Zeitreihen von Monatsmittelwerten des Windes in der Mesosphäre/unteren Thermosphäre über Collm werden auf mögliche Korrelationen mit der Nordatlantischen Oszillation (NAO) und der Südlichen Oszillation (SO) hin untersucht. Während eine positive Korrelation bis in die 1990er Jahre existiert, schwächt sich diese in der Folge ab und kehrt sich teilweise um. Da NAO und SO gekoppelt sind, erfolgen diese Änderungen etwa zur selben Zeit. Die Änderung der Kopplung steht wahrscheinlich in Verbindung mit einer generellen Änderung der Dynamik der mittleren Atmosphäre.

Ensemble calculations for the period from 2000 to 2010 were carried out with the middle and upper atmosphere model (MUAM), and an analysis of the quarterdiurnal tide is performed. The global temporal and latitudinal distributions of the quarterdiurnal tide are modeled with MUAM, and their forcing mechanisms are examined. The quarterdiurnal tides show a similar distribution over the year in the northern and southern hemisphere, with maxima of the amplitude in late winter and spring as well as in autumn. In the latitude-height distribution is also shown that the largest amplitudes of the quarterdiurnal tide are seen at midlatitudes. Due to the decreasing density with height, there is a general increase of the tidal amplitudes with height. The results of the forcing analyses show that direct solar forcing is most important, but also that non-linear forcing and gravity wave interaction with other tides have a non-negligible influence on the quarterdiurnal tide in the middle and upper atmosphere. Mit dem Modell für die mittlere und obere Atmosphäre MUAM wurden Ensemble-Berechnungen für den Zeitraum 2000 bis 2010 durchgeführt und die vierteltägigen Gezeiten analysiert. Es wird auf die globale zeitliche und räumliche Verteilung der vierteltägigen Gezeiten eingegangen und deren Anregungsmechanismen untersucht. Die vierteltägigen Gezeiten zeigen einen ähnlichen Verlauf über das Jahr auf der Nord- und Südhalbkugel mit Maxima der Amplitude im späten Winter und Frühjahr sowie im Herbst. Ein ähnliches Bild zeigt sich auch für die Verteilung im Breiten-Höhen-Schnitt, wo die größten Amplituden der vierteltätigen Gezeiten in den mittleren Breiten zu finden sind. Aufgrund der abnehmenden Dichte mit der Höhe ist eine allgemeine Zunahme der Amplituden mit der Höhe zu beobachten. Es zeigte sich, dass der direkte solare Antrieb am stärksten ausgeprägt ist, aber auch, dass der nichtlinearer Antrieb und die Interaktion von Schwerewellen mit anderen Gezeiten einen nicht zu vernachlässigenden Einfluss auf die vierteltägigen Gezeiten in der mittleren und oberen Atmosphäre haben.

We analyse solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance observed by the Solar EUV Experiment (SEE) onboard the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite, and solar proxies (the F10.7 index, and Mg-II index), and compare their variability with the one of the global mean Total Electron Content (GTEC). Cross-wavelet analysis confirms the joint 27 days periodicity in GTEC and solar proxies. We focus on a comparison for solar minimum (2007-2009) and maximum (2013-2015) and find significant differences in the correlation during low and high solar activity years. GTEC is delayed by approximately 1-2 days in comparison to solar proxies during both low and high solar activity at the 27 days solar rotation period. To investigate the dynamics of the delay process, Coupled Thermosphere Ionosphere Plasmasphere electrodynamics model simulations have been performed for low and high solar activity conditions. Preliminary results using cross correlation analysis show an ionospheric delay of 1 day in GTEC with respect to the F10.7 index during low and high solar activity. Wir analysieren vom Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Experiment (SEE) an Bord des Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) Satelliten gemessene solare EUV-Irradianzen, solare Proxies (den F10.7-Index und denMg-II-Index), und vergleichen deren Variabilität mit derjenigen des global gemittelten Gesamtelektronengehalts (GTEC). Kreuzwaveletanalysen bestätigen eine gemeinsame Variabilität im Periodenbereich der solaren Rotation (27 Tage). Wir vergleichen insbesondere den Zusammenhang während des solaren Minimums (2007- 2009) und Maximums (2013-2015), wobei signifikante Unterschiede der Korrelation zwischen solaren und ionosphärischen Parametern auftreten. Es tritt eine Verzögerung der Maxima und Minima von GTEC gegenüber denjenigen der solaren Proxies von einem Tag sowohl im solaren Minimum als auch im solaren Maximum auf.

Simulations of the circulation in the middle atmosphere during northern winter performed with a nonlinear, mechanistic, global circulation model show that the upper mesospheric jet is greatly overestimated and also the position with respect to latitude and height does not correspond to observations. Apart from that also the winter wind reversal in the mesopause region, evoked by breaking gravity waves (GWs), is located too low around 80km, but is observed to be usually around 100 km. These discrepancies are planned to be eliminated by modifying the distribution of GW amplitudes driving the GW parameterization. This distribution is currently based on potential GW energy data derived from GPS radio occultation measurements and has to be replaced by a distribution based on momentum flux estimates applying midfrequency approximation. The results show a weaker mesospheric jet more realistically tilted towards lower latitudes with height. Also the meridional circulation extending from the summer to the winter pole decelerates and less GWs are propagating into the mesosphere. By additionally varying the GW amplitudes in magnitude and time, the wind reversal is shifted upwards and the mesospheric jet is slowed down. Simulationen der Zirkulation der mittleren Atmosphäre während des nordhemisphärischen Winters unter Verwendung eines nicht-linearen mechanistischen globalen Zirkulationsmodells ergaben beim Vergleich mit Messungen, dass der simulierte, mesosphärische Jet stark überschätzt wird und dessen Position von den Beobachtungen abweicht. Die in der Mesopausenregion einsetzende Windumkehr, hervorgerufen durch brechende Schwerewellen, befindet sich in etwa 80 km anstatt in 100 km. Diese Diskrepanzen sollen eliminiert werden. Hierfür wird die Verteilung der Schwerewellenamplituden, die die Schwerewellenparametrisierung innerhalb des Modells antreibt, am oberen Rand der Troposphäre modifiziert. Diese basiert derzeit auf global beobachteten, zonal gemittelten Daten der potentiellen Energie von Schwerewellen abgeleitet aus GPS Radiookkultationsmessungen und soll durch eine auf Impulsflüssen basierende Verteilung ersetzt werden. Das Modellexperiment zeigt, dass der mesosphärische Jet mit der Höhe in Richtung niedriger Breiten geneigt ist und abgebremst wird. Zudem schwächt die Meridionalzirkulation vom Sommer- zum Winterpol leicht ab und weniger Schwerewellen dringen bis in die Mesosphäre vor. Zusätzlich wird durch zeitliche und unterschiedlich starke Variation der Schwerewellenamplitude die Windumkehr verlagert und der mesosphärische Jet abgebremst.

The GPS radio occultation technique is used to study sporadic E (Es) layer plasma irregularities of the Earth’s ionosphere on a global scale using COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3 satellite constellation GPS signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) profiles. The maximum deviation from the mean SNR is attributed to the height of the Es layer. Es are produced by ion convergence due to vertical wind shear in the presence of a horizontal component of the Earth magnetic field, while the wind shear is provided mainly by solar tides. Indeed, close correlation between Es and wind shear phases have already been found for the semidiurnal and terdiurnal tidal components. Here, we present the global distribution of quarterdiurnal (QDT) signatures in Es occurrence rates. We find that, in accordance with upward energy flux, negative vertical phase gradients of QDT Es signatures are observed. The maximum signal of QDT Es is found at altitudes above 100 km. In the southern hemisphere, maximum QDT Es occurrence rates are found in winter and during equinoxes. In the northern hemisphere, however, at altitudes above 100 km strong QDT activity is also visible. Die GPS-Radiookkultationstechnik wird verwendet, um ionosphärische Plasmairregularitäten in Verbindung mit sporadischen E- (Es) Schichten auf globaler Skala zu untersuchen. Verwendet werden Signal-Rauschverhältnis- (SNR-) Profile. Die maximale Abweichung vom mittleren SNR wird der Höhe der Es-Schicht zugeordnet. Es werden durch Ionenkonvergenz aufgrund von vertikaler Windscherung in Anwesenheit einer horizontalen Komponente des Erdmagnetfeldes hervorgerufen, wobei die Scherung hauptsächlich durch solare Gezeiten verursacht wird. Tatsächlich wurden schon früher deutliche Übereinstimmungen zwischen dem Auftreten von Es und den Phasen der halb- und dritteltägigen Gezeiten gefunden. Hier stellen wir die globale Verteilung der vierteltägigen (QDT) Signaturen in Es- Auftretensraten vor. Es zeigt sich dass, in Übereinstimmung mit einem aufwärts gerichteten Energietransport, negative vertikale Phasengradienten der QDT in Es auftreten. Die maximale Auftretenswahrscheinlichkeit liegt bei Höhen oberhalb von 100 km. Auf der Südhemisphäre fällt das Maximum der QDT in Es-Auftretensraten in den Winter, während auf der Nordhemisphäre oberhalb von 100 km auch im Sommer starke QDT-Aktivität zu verzeichnen ist.

We use ERA-Interim reanalysis data of 2 meter temperature to perform a pattern analysis of the Arctic temperatures exploiting an artificial neural network called Self Organizing-Map (SOM). The SOM method is used as a cluster analysis tool where the number of clusters has to be specified by the user. The different sized SOMs are analyzed in terms of how the size changes the representation of specific features. The results confirm that the larger the SOM is chosen the larger will be the root mean square error (RMSE) for the given SOM, which is followed by the fact that a larger number of patterns can reproduce more specific features for the temperature. Wir benutzten das künstliche neuronale Netzwerk Self Organizing-Map (SOM), um eine Musteranalyse von ERA-Interim Reanalysedaten durchzuführen. Es wurden SOMs mit verschiedener Musteranzahl verglichen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass SOMs mit einer größeren Musteranzahl deutlich spezifischere Muster produzieren im Vergleich zu SOMs mit geringen Musteranzahlen. Dies zeigt sich unter anderem in der Betrachtung der mittleren quadratischen Abweichung (RMSE) der Muster zu den zugeordneten ERA Daten.

Long-period oscillations in the period range 2–30 days, interpreted as planetary wave (PW) signatures, have been analysed using daily mesosphere/lower thermosphere wind measurements near 90 km over Collm (52° N, 15° E) in the time interval 1980–2005. Interannual and interdecadal variability of PW are found. Since the 1990s, a tendency for larger zonal amplitudes compared to meridional ones has been observed, i.e. some long-term trends are visible, which are positive in the zonal component, but negative in the meridional component. There is a tendency of the trend to be non-linear for waves with periods lower than 7 days, so that a climatic transition appears around 1990, with smaller changes before and after that time. A solar cycle effect on PW is weak, but there is a tendency for a positive correlation between solar flux and wave activity, if a time lag of PW activity with respect to the solar flux of about 2 years is taken into consideration.

The 2009 solar minimum 23/24 has been characterized by an anomalous strong decrease in thermospheric density. We analyze anomalies of mesosphere/lower thermosphere parameters possibly connected with this effect. Nighttime mean low-frequency reflection heights measured at Collm, Germany, show a very strong decrease after 2005, indicating a density decrease. This decrease is also visible in mean meteor heights measured with a VHF meteor radar at Collm. It is accompanied by an increase/ decrease of gravity wave (GW) amplitudes in the upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere. On the decadal scale, GWs are negatively correlated with the background zonal wind, but this correlation is modulated in the course of the solar cycle, indicating the combined effect of GW filtering and density decrease.

A piecewise linear model is developed to detect climatic trends and possible structural changes in time series with a priori unknown number and positions of breakpoints. The initial noise is allowed to be interpreted by the first- and second-order autoregressive models. The goodness of fit of candidate models, if the residuals are accepted as normally distributed white noise, is evaluated using the Schwarz Bayesian Information Criterion. The uncertainties of all modeled trend parameters are estimated using the Monte-Carlo method. The model is applied to the mesosphere/lower thermosphere winds obtained at Collm (52°N, 15°E) during 1960-2007. A persistent increase after ~1980 is observed in the annual mean zonal wind based on the primary model while only a weak positive trend arises in the meridional component. Major trend breakpoints are identified around 1968-71 and 1976-79 in both the zonal and meridional winds.

Primary ionisation of major ionospheric constituents is calculated from satellite-borne solar EUV measurements. Number densities of the background atmosphere are taken from the NRLMSISE-00 climatology. From the calculated ionisation rates, an index termed EUV-TEC, which is based on the global total ionisation is calculated, and describes the ionospheric response to solar EUV and its variability. The index is compared against global mean ionospheric total electron content (TEC) derived from GPS data. Results show that the EUV-TEC index provides a better overall representation of global TEC than conventional solar indices like F10.7 do. The EUV-TEC index may be used for scientific research, and to describe the ionospheric effects on radio communication and navigation systems.

We present measurements of sporadic E (Es) layer occurrence frequency from FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC GPS radio occultation measurements at 50°-55°N and compare these with zonal wind shears measured by meteor radar at Collm. Both parameters are, on a diurnal time scale, dominated by a semidiurnal oscillation. According to theory, maximum Es occurrence is expected when the zonal wind shear is negative. This is confirmed by our measurements and analyses. Es werden Messungen sporadischer E-Schichten (Es) mit Hilfe von FORMOSAT- 3/COSMIC GPS-Radiookkultationsmessungen bei 50°-55°N vorgestellt und mit Analysen des zonalen Windes aus Meteorradarmessungen verglichen. Auf einer Zeitskala bis zu einem Tag ist eine halbtägige Komponente das dominierende Muster. Nach allgemein anerkannter Theorie sollten sporadische E-Schichten bevorzugt bei negativer Scherung des Zonalwindes auftreten. Die hier gezeigten Analysen bestätigen dies.

Schwerewellen transportieren Energie und Impuls aus den unteren in die oberen Atmosphärenschichten. Impulsflüsse und ihre Divergenz beschreiben dabei die Kopplung der Wellen mit der mittleren Zirkulation. Mit einer Methode von Hocking (2005) können Varianzen und Schwerewellenimpulsflüsse in der Mesosphäre / unteren Thermosphäre mit einem All-Sky Interferometric (SKiYMET) Meteorradar bestimmt werden. Diese Methode wurde auf die Datensätze des Meteorradars in Collm (51.3°N,13.0°E) angewandt. Erste Ergebnisse für die Varianzen und Impulsflüsse sowie speziell für die Höhenprofile des vertikalen Flusses zonalen Impulses im Jahresgang und die Untersuchung dessen auf periodische Schwankungen werden hier vorgestellt. Gravity waves transport energy and momentum from the lower to the upper atmosphere. Momentum fluxes and their divergence describe the coupling of the waves with the background circulation. By using a method presented by Hocking (2005), wind variances and gravity wave momentum fluxes in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere can be determined with an all-sky interferometric (SKiYMET) meteor radar. This method has been applied to the data sets of the meteor radar at Collm (51.3°N,13.0°E). First results for the variances and momentum fluxes as well as for the height profiles of the vertical flux of zonal momentum, its seasonal cycle and periodic variations are presented.

Results of mesosphere/lower thermosphere wind measurements over Collm in 2007, carried out with a meteor radar (MR) and the LF D1 method in 2007 are presented. The seasonal cycles of wind parameters are in qualitative agreement with other years, but strong southward winds are noted in the first half of the year. The tidal amplitudes are lower than on a long-term average. Trend analyses of the LF winds show an increase of the zonal prevailing wind throughout the year, a decrease of the meridional Brewer-Dobson-circulation, and a tendency of the semidiurnal tidal phases towards later times, possible in connection with middle atmosphere cooling. However, these trends seem to decrease in recent years. The LF winds are in good agreement with modern empirical models, partly owing to the fact that these models base on LF and similar wind measurements. MR winds are usually stronger, which is especially the case with the semidiurnal tide. Es werden die Ergebnisse von Meteorradar- und LF D1-Windmessungen im Mesopausenbereich über Collm im Jahre 2007 vorgestellt. Der Jahresgang der Windparameter ist in qualitativer Übereinstimmung mit denjenigen anderer Jahre, aber deutliche nach Süden gerichtete Winde werden in der ersten Hälfte des Jahres festgestellt. Trendanalysen der Windparameter zeigen eine Zunahme des Zonalwindes, eine Abnahme des Meridionalwindes, und eine Tendenz zur Verschiebung der halbtägigen Gezeiten zu späteren Zeitpunkten, was in Übereinstimmung mit einer Abkühlung der Atmosphäre ist. Diese Trends weisen in den letzten Jahren jedoch eine Tendenz zur Verringerung auf. Die mit der LF D1-Methode gemessenen Winde sind in guter Übereinstimmung mit empirischen Modellen, was jedoch zum Teil darauf zurück zu führen ist, dass diese Modelle auch auf Collmer Daten beruhen. Meteorradars messen im Allgemeinen stärkere Winde, dies zeigt sich vor allem bei den halbtägigen Gezeiten.

Die Methoden zur Beobachtung des atmosphärischenWindfeldes und der Temperatur im Mesopausenbereich mit Meteorradaren sind gut bekannt. Im Gegensatz dazu gibt es nur wenige Informationen über die Eigenschaften der Meteore (Größe, Dichte und Masse), die durch ein Meteorradar detektiert werden können. Im Folgenden sollen die physikalischen Prozesse, die beim Eintritt eines Meteoroiden in die Atmosphäre von Bedeutung sind, genauer betrachtet werden. In Baggaley (2002) und Stober et al. (2007) wurde eine theoretische Beschreibung des vom Radar empfangenen Signals gegeben. Die Modelle, die in Hunt et al. (2003) vorgestellt wurden, wurden im Hinblick auf die besondere Geometrie des am Collm (51.30N,130E) befindlichen Meteorradars untersucht und mit Messungen des Systems in Bezug gesetzt. Damit überhaupt ein Vergleich durchgef¨uhrt werden kann ist es notwendig das Radar zu kalibrieren, d.h. die an den Antennen empfangenen Signale müssen in eine vom Meteorschweif reflektierte Leistung umgewandelt werden. Dazu werden die Ergebnisse, die in Campistron (2001) vorgestellt wurden, auf das SKiYMET Radar am Collm angewendet. Aus den kalibrierten Daten und unter Verwendung einer empirischen Klimatologie ist es m¨oglich die Masse der Meteore abzuschätzen. The methods to observe the atmospheric wind field and the temperature in the mesopause region using meteor radars are well known. In contrast, there are only a some information about the properties of the meteors (size, density and mass), which can be detected by a meteor radar. In the following the physical processes, which are of importance for a meteoroid entering the earth’s atmosphere, are considered. In Baggaley (2001) and Stober et al. (2007) a theoretical description of the signal received by the radar was given. The models evaluated in Hunt et al. (2003), will be discussed considering the specular geometry of the Collm meteor radar (51.30N,130E) and compared to the measurements. This comparison is only possible with a calibrated radar, which means that the received arbitrary amplitudes are converted into the reflected power from the meteor trail. Therefore, the results shown in Campistron et al. (2001) will be applied for the Collm SKiYMET radar. With the calibrated data and the assignment of an empirical climatology it is possible to give an estimate of the meteor mass.

Mit Hilfe eines Zirkulationsmodells der mittleren Atmosphäre wird die Ausbreitung der Quasi-Zwei-Tage-Welle simuliert. Das Modell verfügt über eine aktuelle Schwerewellenparametrisierung und ermöglicht daher die detaillierte Beschreibung der Wechselwirkung planetarer Wellen mit Schwerewellen. Bei Anwesenheit der Quasi-Zwei-Tage-Welle wird der Schwerewellenfluss mit der Periode von zwei Tagen und der räumlichen Struktur der Quasi- Zwei-Tage-Welle moduliert. Modellergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die Quasi-Zwei-Tage-Welle nicht gut in die untere Thermosphäre ausbreitet. Phasenvergleiche zwischen Quasi-Zwei-Tage-Welle und Divergenz des Eliassen-Palm-Flusses der Schwerewellen zeigen, dass dies eine Folge sekundärer Anregung der Quasi-Zwei-Tage-Welle durch brechende Schwerewellen ist, die außer Phase mit der Originalwelle erfolgt.

Seit Juli 2004 wird an der Außenstelle Collm der Universität Leipzig kontinuierlich ein Meteorradar zur Messung des Windes und der Temperatur im Höhenbereich 80-100 km betrieben. Die Messungen dienen der Überwachung der Dynamik der Mesopausenregion, und ihrer Änderungen auf Zeitskalen von Tagen und Jahren. Erste Ergebnisse vom Herbst 2004 werden dargestellt, verglichen mit den ebenfalls am Collm durchgeführten Langewellenreflexionswindmessungen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die vertikale Struktur des Windsystems und die Variationen von Tag zu Tag qualitativ übereinstimmen. Die mit dem Meteorradar gemessenen Gezeitenamplituden sind jedoch systematisch größer als diejenigen, die mit dem Langewellenverfahren gemessen wurden.
