5. Socioeconomic and environmental impacts of bridge construction: evidence from the Khan Jahan Ali Bridge, Khulna, Bangladesh

Abstract

PurposeKhan Jahan Ali (KJA) Bridge was constructed to promote industrial and commercial activity and improve economic and employment activity for local people. This study assessed the post-socioeconomic and environmental impacts of KJA Bridge on the inhabitants living adjacent to 2 Km from the bridge. As there is a slum adjacent to the bridge, the bridge has impacted much on the improvement of the social economic condition and lifestyle of the slum people.Design/methodology/approachThe study approached a questionnaire-based field survey data collection through interviewing the people in the surrounding areas. To assess the environmental impacts, land cover change (LCC), carbon emissions and land surface temperature (LST) data were derived from Landsat images and processed in geospatial environment.FindingsThe study suggests that after bridge construction, 84% people have new jobs and about 87% people's income level has been increased. As a tourist spot, the bridge served employment opportunities for the 12% of the inhabitants. About 83% house structures have been improved, where the percentages of pucca and semi-pucca houses increased by 11% and 23%, respectively. The frequency of school-going children and literacy rate also increased. Despite all the socioeconomic development, 7.48% agricultural, 9.75% vegetation, 1.74% waterbodies were declined. Net carbon emissions increased to 13,432.39 tons from 3,323.46 tons; average LST increased from 25.750 to 32.550°C after the bridge construction.Originality/valueThis study focused on descriptive statistical analysis and portrayed the impact of the bridge on social, economic and environment from a micro point of view.

Abstract

The reduction number of monomial ideals in the polynomial $K[x,y]$ is studied. We focus on ideals $I$ for which $J=(x^a,y^b)$ is a reduction ideal. The computation of the reduction number amounts to solve linear inequalities. In some special cases the reduction number can be explicitly computed.

Abstract

For each squarefree monomial ideal $I\subset S = k[x_{1},\ldots, x_{n}] $, we associate a simple graph $G_I$ by using the first linear syzygies of $I$. In cases, where $G_I$ is a cycle or a tree, we show the following are equivalent: (a) $ I $ has a linear resolution (b) $ I $ has linear quotients (c) $ I $ is a variable-decomposable ideal In addition, with the same assumption on $G_I$, we characterize all monomial ideals with a linear resolution. Using our results, we characterize all Cohen-Macaulay codimension $2$ monomial ideals with a linear resolution. As an other application of our results, we also characterize all Cohen-Macaulay simplicail complexes in cases that $G_{\Delta}\cong G_{I_{\Delta^{\vee}}}$ is a cycle or a tree.

Abstract

In this paper we introduce a family of monomial ideals with the persistence property. Given positive integers $n$ and $t$, we consider the monomial ideal $I=Ind_t(P_n)$ generated by all monomials $\textbf{x} ^F$, where $F$ is an independent set of vertices of the path graph $P_n$ of size $t$, which is indeed the facet ideal of the $t$-th skeleton of the independence complex of $P_n$. We describe the set of associated primes of all powers of $I$ explicitly. It turns out that any such ideal $I$ has the persistence property. Moreover the index of stability of $I$ and the stable set of associated prime ideals of $I$ are determined., Comment: 11 pages

Abstract

Let $\Delta$ be a pure simplicial complex and $I_\Delta$ its Stanley-Reisner ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. We show that $\Delta$ is a matroid (complete intersection) if and only if $S/I_\Delta^{(m)}$ ($S/I_\Delta^m$) is clean for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$. If $\dim(\Delta)=1$, we also prove that $S/I_\Delta^{(2)}$ ($S/I_\Delta^2$) is clean if and only if $S/I_\Delta^{(2)}$ ($S/I_\Delta^2$) is Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract

Due to the high demand for Internet of Things (IoT) and real-time data monitoring and control applications in recent years, the long-range (LoRa) communication protocols leverage technology to provide inter-cluster communications in an effective manner. A secure LoRa system is required to monitor and store IoT data in the cloud. This paper aims to report on the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of a low-cost LoRa transceiver interface unit (433 MHz band) for the real-time monitoring and storing of IoT sensor data in the cloud. We designed and analyzed a low-cost LoRa transceiver interface unit consisting of a LoRa communication module and Wi-Fi module in the laboratory. The system was built (prototype) using radially available hardware devices from the local electronics shops at about USD 150. The transmitter can securely exchange IoT sensor data to the receiver node at about 10 km using a LoRa Wi-Fi module. The receiver node accumulates the sensor data and stores it in the cloud for processing. The performance of the proposed LoRa transceiver was evaluated by field experiments in which two transmitter nodes were deployed on the rooftop of Auckland University of Technology’s Tower building on city campus (New Zealand), and the receiver node was deployed in Liston Park, which was located 10 km away from the University Tower building. The manual incident field tests examined the accuracy of the sensor data, and the system achieved a data accuracy of about 99%. The reaction time of the transmitter nodes was determined by the data accumulation of sensor nodes within 2–20 s. Results show that the system is robust and can be used to effectively link city and suburban park communities.

Abstract

Mustard is Bangladesh's leading oil crop, produced only during the winter (rabi) season. The sowing date is a key factor determining mustard's optimum growth and development. Because of global warming, gradual changes in season and weather parameters over time is creating a challenge in mustard cultivation. Thus, the present investigation assessed the role of different planting dates on several modern mustard varieties to disclose the optimum growth indicators necessary for elevated biological yield (BY) and harvest index (HI). Three planting times, viz. 31st October (D1), 10th November (D2), 20th November (D3) and six varieties viz. Binasarisha-4 (V1), Binasarisha-9 (V2), Binasarisha-10 (V3), BARI Sarisha-14 (V4), BARI Sarisha-16 (V5), BARI Sarisha-17 (V6) were put on a replicated factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) during rabi 2019 at BINA Sub-station farm, Magura. At the final harvest stage, outcomes depicted that highest and lowest total dry mass (g/plant) was produced by treatment D3× V5 (64.03) and D1× V1 (15.34), maximum and minimum absolute growth rate (mg/plant/day) by D1× V5 (2389.10) and D2× V1 (184.50), most and least relative growth rate (mg/g/day) in D1× V4 (53.34) and D2× V1 (3.55), maximum and least crop growth rate (g/m2/day) with D1× V3 (55.60) and D3× V4 (20.04). BY was the peak (8.13, 8.71, 8.77 t/ha) under all plantings (D1, D2, D3) with V5 variety, but HI (44.96%) was most in variety V4 with D2 sowing. Therefore, correlation studies showed a significant positive relationship between biological yield and harvest index. Overall, BARI Sarisha-16 performed well in all three sowing times, and remarkably, BY was rising with delayed planting in the case of Binasarisha-9, Binasarisha-10, and BARI Sarisha-14. This implies that delayed planting might not hamper yield but boost yield to some extent.

Abstract

Let $K$ be a field and $I$ a monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,..., x_n]$ generated by monomials $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$. We show that $S/I$ is pretty clean if either: 1) $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$ is a filter-regular sequence, 2) $u_1,u_2,..., u_t$ is a $d$-sequence; or 3) $I$ is almost complete intersection. In particular, in each of these cases, $S/I$ is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and both Stanley's and $h$-regularity conjectures, on Stanley decompositions, hold for $S/I$. Also, we prove that if $I$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a locally complete intersection simplicial complex on $[n]$, then Stanley's conjecture holds for $S/I$., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. 19. Skeletons of monomial ideals

Abstract

In analogy to the skeletons of a simplicial complex and their Stanley--Reisner ideals we introduce the skeletons of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I\subset S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$. This allows us to compute the depth of $S/I$ in terms of its skeleton ideals. We apply these techniques to show that Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decompositions of $S/I$ holds provided it holds whenever $S/I$ is Cohen--Macaulay. We also discuss a conjecture of Soleyman-Jahan and show that it suffices to prove his conjecture for monomial ideals with linear resolution.

21. Pretty clean monomial ideals and linear quotients

Abstract

We study basic properties of monomial ideals with linear quotients. It is shown that if the monomial ideal $I$ has linear quotients, then the squarefree part of $I$ and each component of $I$ as well as $\mm I$ have linear quotients, where $\mm$ is the graded maximal ideal of the polynomial ring. As an analogy to the Rearrangement Lemma of Bj\"orner and Wachs we also show that for a monomial ideal with linear quotients the admissible order of the generators can be chosen degree increasingly. As a generalization of the facet ideal of a forest, we define monomial ideals of forest type and show that they are pretty clean. This result recovers a recent result of Tuly and Villarreal about the shellability of a clutter with the free vertex property. As another consequence of this result we show that if $I$ is a monomial ideal of forest type, then Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decomposition holds for $S/I$. We also show that a clutter is totally balanced if and only if it has the free vertex property.

Abstract

We show that all monomial ideals in the polynomial ring in at most 3 variables are pretty clean and that an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ is pretty clean if and only if its polarization $I^p$ is clean. This yields a new characterization of pretty clean monomial ideals in terms of the arithmetic degree, and it also implies that a multicomplex is shellable if and only the simplicial complex corresponding to its polarization is (non-pure) shellable. We also discuss Stanley decompositions in relation to prime filtrations.

29. Combined Effect of Vermicompost and Inorganic Fertilizer on Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Tomato Plant

Abstract

To evaluate the combined effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer a field experiment was conducted on tomato for yield and yield contributing character of fruits using vermicompost and different types of inorganic fertilizers at the farms of Ishurdi Sub-station of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear agriculture (BINA) during Rabi season, 2020. One variety (Binatomato-11) and ten different treatments T1 = control (no fertilizer), T2 = 100% CF (Chemical Fertilizer), T3 = 70% CF, T4 = 70% CF + 1 t ha-1 VC (Vermicompost), T5 = 70% CF + 2 t ha-1 VC, T6 = 70% CF + 3 t ha-1 VC, T7 = 85% CF, T8 = 85% CF+ 1 t ha-1 VC, T9 = 85% CF+ 2 t ha-1 VC and T10 = 85% CF + 3 t ha-1 VC were used as experimental materials. The field trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results showed that plant height (120.67 cm), number of fruits/plant (53.33), single fruit weight (95 gm), fruit yield (63.33 t/ha), number of fruit picking (5 times) were higher in T5 (70% Chemical fertilizers + 2t ha-1 VC) than control and other treatments. No significant difference was observed in days to 1st flowering response to the treatments. The study revealed that combined effect of vermicompost and inorganic fertilizers affected tomato plant significantly.

30. Adjusting planting time of Binadhan-17 in boro season

Abstract

Boro rice (grown in winter under irrigated condition) contributes to the major portion of rice production (over 50%) in Bangladesh. Binadhan-17 is a green super rice developed by BINA which requires 30% less nitrogenous fertilizer and water which is grown in aman season (primely produced under rainfed). Due to it’s increasing popularity and adoption rice growers are keen to cultivate it in boro season also. Taking account of the above situation, two field trials were conducted at Magura during November 2019 to May 2020 to investigate the effect of variety, sowing dates and their interaction. Factorial RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) was applied for experimentation. Two rice varieties: Binadhan-17 (V1), BRRI dhan58 (V2) and three sowing times: 30th November (T1), 10th December (T2), 20th December (T3) were used as treatments. 35 days old seedlings were transplanted in main field. Relevant agronomic and morphological data were statistically analyzed through Statistix 10.0. Combined effect of the above factors at farm exposed that, T1×V1 required longest days (159.33 days) to mature. but, comparatively short life cycle (149.97 days) was observed by T3×V2. Maximum grain was yielded (7.70 t/ha) by T2×V1 and minimum (5.74 t/ha) by T1×V1 treatment combination. Outcomes of on station revealed that, T1×V1 needed more days (158.00 days) to mature; conversely, alike duration was noted with T2×V2 (147.20 days) and T3×V2 (145.43 days) which matured quite earlier. T2×V1 produced the highest grain yield (7.41 t/ha) and T1×V2 the lowest (5.94 t/ha). Our results indicate that, planting of Binadhan-17 on 10th December may give insect-disease free grains with optimum yield in context of Magura region. Abstract

Fast data search is an important element of big data in the modern era of internet of things, cloud computing, and social networks. Search using traditional binary-search algorithm can be accelerated by employing an interpolation search technique when the data is regularly distributed. In this work, the interpolation search is investigated in which the search results provided unexpected sluggish progress during a search in a large database due to the irregular distribution of data. Irregular distribution of data does not allow the interpolation to make a good prediction about the location of the search item. To overcome this issue, an interpolation–extrapolation search (IES) method is proposed where the interpolation method is integrated with an extrapolation method that balances the lower and upper bounds of the search interval. The proposed method provides faster convergence property than the binary search and the interpolation method. Hence, the proposed IES method provides a faster search for items in a big database.

37. Canonical and Noncanonical Sites Determine NPT2A Binding Selectivity to NHERF1 PDZ1.

Abstract

Na+/H+ Exchanger Regulatory Factor-1 (NHERF1) is a scaffolding protein containing 2 PDZ domains that coordinates the assembly and trafficking of transmembrane receptors and ion channels. Most target proteins harboring a C-terminus recognition motif bind more-or-less equivalently to the either PDZ domain, which contain identical core-binding motifs. However some substrates such as the type II sodium-dependent phosphate co-transporter (NPT2A), uniquely bind only one PDZ domain. We sought to define the structural determinants responsible for the specificity of interaction between NHERF1 PDZ domains and NPT2A. By performing all-atom/explicit-solvent molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in combination with biological mutagenesis, fluorescent polarization (FP) binding assays, and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), we found that in addition to canonical interactions of residues at 0 and -2 positions, Arg at the -1 position of NPT2A plays a critical role in association with Glu43 and His27 of PDZ1 that are absent in PDZ2. Experimentally introduced mutation in PDZ1 (Glu43Asp and His27Asn) decreased binding to NPT2A. Conversely, introduction of Asp183Glu and Asn167His mutations in PDZ2 promoted the formation of favorable interactions yielding micromolar KDs. The results describe novel determinants within both the PDZ domain and outside the canonical PDZ-recognition motif that are responsible for discrimination of NPT2A between two PDZ domains. The results challenge general paradigms for PDZ recognition and suggest new targets for drug development.

Abstract

Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP), along with physical limitations that affect the quality of life, is one of the most important problems in the health community. The pain causes a wide range of structural, functional, and neurological changes in the brain. However, these changes have not been well studied, as brain changes in other chronic pains. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of patients with nonspecific CLBP, and also to evaluate the effects of interferential current (IFC), as one of the common treatment methods in these patients, on the EEG. Methods: This randomized control trial was performed in the Physiotherapy Clinic of Rehabilitation Faculty of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences from July 2021 to February 2022. A total of 20 patients with nonspecific CLBP and 20 healthy individuals participated in this study. Healthy subjects were in the control group, and the patients were randomly divided into two groups: intervention and placebo. Participants' EEG and pain intensity were recorded before and after one session of IFC. Results: The results of statistical analyses to compare the EEG of patients and healthy individuals did not show a significant difference between the two groups. The results of statistical tests to evaluate the effects of IFC on participants' EEG showed a significant increase in alpha frequency in all three groups. In addition, a significant increase in theta frequency was recorded in the placebo group, and an increase in the beta frequency in the intervention group. Pain intensity showed a significant decrease only in the intervention group. Discussion: The results of this study suggest that changes in EEG in patients with low back pain may be related to the severity of pain and neurological involvement. Abstract

Aus, aman and boro are three rice cultivating seasons in Bangladesh. Among these aus is the least cultivated and grown in comparatively small scale due to prevailing drought and less availability of surface water for irrigation. Modern varieties of aus rice cover a significant area of the country conversely local cultivars cover a small area. Aus rice requires much fewer inputs than aman and boro. Due to continuous declination of groundwater level, nowadays more emphasis is given on the extension of aus cultivation throughout the country. The present field study tested yield and morphological attributes of six developed aus rice varieties viz. Binadhan-14, Binadhan-19, BRRI dhan43, BRRI dhan48, BRRI dhan55 and BRRI dhan65 to characterize yield, maturity and phenological properties. The field trial was set at Satvaiyapara of Khagrachari during 2018 following Randomized Complete Block design with dispersed plots. All data were collected at harvest and analysed statistically by Statistix 10. Findings revealed that statistically highest grain yield was produced from BRRI dhan55 (4.49 t/ha) and BRRI dhan48 (4.48 t/ha); the lowest by BRRI dhan65 (3.06 t/ ha). The yield of Binadhan-19 (4.37 t/ha) and Binadhan-14 (3.87 t/ha) was intermediate. In case of maturity, Binadhan-19 (99.33 days) had the shortest life duration and BRRI dhan48 (113.67 days), the longest. The greater portion of the farmers was keen to grow Binadhan-19 and Binadhan-14 instead of BRRI dhan43 and BRRI dhan48 mainly for its short duration, optimal yield, long and slender quality grain. Binadhan-19 might be a promising aus variety in the Khagrachari hill tracts for gaining favourable yield within a short time. Therefore, further studies are needed in jhum cultivation with local cultivars for more significant comparison and acceptability to the rice farming community.

Abstract

Background: Beta lactamase enzymes are the most important agents involved in promoting antimicrobial resistance patterns in bacteria. The aim of the present study was to investigate probable roles of enzyme activity divergence in production of different phenotypic resistance patterns among extended-spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) producing Salmonella clinical isolates. Methods: Detection of ESBLs-related phenotypes was performed by initial screening and specific tests among 174 Salmonella isolates through disk diffusion, and combined disk and minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) methods. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify blaTEM, blaCTX, and blaSHV on both chromosomal and plasmid DNA extracts. The enzymatic activity of each isolate was determined by iodometric, biological, and spectrophotometric assays on crude protein extracts in the presence of a specific substrate. Findings: The frequency of ESBL producing isolates was 4%. MIC values for isolates showed differences at higher cephalosporin concentrations. All isolates were negative for blaSHV, but were carriers of blaTEM and blaCTX genes on their plasmids. The enzyme activities on cephalosporins were diverse at constant concentration of protein extracts. Conclusion: Diverse expression levels of ESBLs among beta-lactamase producing isolates could explain their different hydrolytic activities. Probable diversity among beta- lactamase subfamily members, existence and expression of more than one gene, and involvement of other resistant mechanisms can explain resistant phenotype variations in these bacteria. Abstract

The concept of Internet of Things (IoT) can be utilised in vehicles, since the number of sensor nodes in vehicles is rising tremendously because of the uplifting demand of applications for security, safety and convenience. In order to establish the communication among these nodes inside a vehicle, a controller area network with wired architecture provides a prominent solution. However, this solution is not flexible because of the architectural complexity and the demand for a large number of sensors inside the vehicle; hence wired architectures are replaced by wireless ones. Moreover, scalability will be an important issue while introducing the IoT concept in Intra-Vehicular Wireless Sensor Networks (IVWSNs). In this paper, a comprehensive performance investigation on the IoT enabled IVWSNs (IoT-IVWSNs) to be carried out in order to address this issue. The overview of the IoT-IVWSNs with a comparative study of the existing technologies and the design challenges for such network are provided. The link design between an end-device and the control unit is analysed, and the performance of the network has been investigated and some open research issues are addressed. It reveals that the delay in packet transmission increases due to higher traffic loads and the number of end-devices. This result demonstrates that the existing MAC protocol works well for a small network (i.e., a network with a maximum number of 50 nodes) but is not suitable for a large network (i.e., a network with more than 50 nodes). The outcome of this research helps to design a smart car system.
