The diffusion of novel information through social networks is essential for dismantling echo chambers and promoting innovation. Our study examines how two major types of viral channels, specifically Direct Messaging (DM) and Broadcasting (BC), impact the well-known "strength of weak ties" in disseminating novel information across social networks. We conducted a large-scale empirical analysis, examining the sharing behavior of 500,000 users over a two-month period on a major social media platform. Our results suggest a greater capacity for DM to transmit novel information compared to BC, although DM typically involves stronger ties. Furthermore, the "strength of weak ties" is only evident in BC, not in DM where weaker ties do not transmit significantly more novel information. Our mechanism analysis indicates that the content selection by both senders and recipients, contingent on tie strength, contributes to the observed differences between these two channels. These findings expand both our understanding of contemporary weak tie theory and our knowledge of how to disseminate novel information in social networks.

As a cross-modal task, visual storytelling aims to generate a story for an ordered image sequence automatically. Different from the image captioning task, visual storytelling requires not only modeling the relationships between objects in the image but also mining the connections between adjacent images. Recent approaches primarily utilize either end-to-end frameworks or multi-stage frameworks to generate relevant stories, but they usually overlook latent topic information. In this paper, in order to generate a more coherent and relevant story, we propose a novel method, Topic Aware Reinforcement Network for VIsual StoryTelling (TARN-VIST). In particular, we pre-extracted the topic information of stories from both visual and linguistic perspectives. Then we apply two topic-consistent reinforcement learning rewards to identify the discrepancy between the generated story and the human-labeled story so as to refine the whole generation process. Extensive experimental results on the VIST dataset and human evaluation demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms most of the competitive models across multiple evaluation metrics.

Software testing is essential for the reliable development of complex software systems. A key step in software testing is fault localization, which uses test data to pinpoint failure-inducing combinations for further diagnosis. Existing fault localization methods, however, are largely deterministic, and thus do not provide a principled approach for assessing probabilistic risk of potential root causes, or for integrating domain and/or structural knowledge from test engineers. To address this, we propose a novel Bayesian fault localization framework called BayesFLo, which leverages a flexible Bayesian model on potential root cause combinations. A key feature of BayesFLo is its integration of the principles of combination hierarchy and heredity, which capture the structured nature of failure-inducing combinations. A critical challenge, however, is the sheer number of potential root cause scenarios to consider, which renders the computation of posterior root cause probabilities infeasible even for small software systems. We thus develop new algorithms for efficient computation of such probabilities, leveraging recent tools from integer programming and graph representations. We then demonstrate the effectiveness of BayesFLo over state-of-the-art fault localization methods, in a suite of numerical experiments and in two motivating case studies on the JMP XGBoost interface.

Considerable information about the early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is encoded in the rapidity dependence of measurements. To leverage the large amount of experimental data, we perform a systematic analysis using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of multiple collision systems -- large and small, symmetric and asymmetric. Specifically, we perform fully 3D multi-stage hydrodynamic simulations initialized by a parameterized model for rapidity-dependent energy deposition, which we calibrate on the hadron multiplicity and anisotropic flow coefficients. We utilize Bayesian inference to constrain properties of the early- and late- time dynamics of the system, and highlight the impact of enforcing global energy conservation in our 3D model.

In this talk we review jet production in a large variety of collision systems using the JETSCAPE event generator and Hybrid Hadronization. Hybrid Hadronization combines quark recombination, applicable when distances between partons in phase space are small, and string fragmentation appropriate for dilute parton systems. It can therefore smoothly describe the transition from very dilute parton systems like $e^++e^-$ to full $A+A$ collisions. We test this picture by using JETSCAPE to generate jets in various systems. Comparison to experimental data in $e^++e^-$ and $p+p$ collisions allows for a precise tuning of vacuum baseline parameters in JETSCAPE and Hybrid Hadronization. Proceeding to systems with jets embedded in a medium, we study in-medium hadronization for jet showers. We quantify the effects of an ambient medium, focusing in particular on the dependence on the collective flow and size of the medium. Understanding the modification of jets and high-$p_T$ probes in small systems requires the integration of soft and hard physics. We present recent developments in extending the JETSCAPE framework to build an event generator, which includes correlations between soft and hard partons, to study jet observables in small systems. The multi-scale physics of the collision is separated into different stages. Hard scatterings are first sampled at binary collision positions provided by the Glauber geometry. They are then propagated backward in space-time following an initial-state shower to obtain the initiating partons' energies and momenta before the collision. These energies and momenta are then subtracted from the incoming colliding nucleons for soft-particle production, modeled by the 3D-Glauber + hydrodynamics + hadronic transport framework. This new hybrid approach (X-SCAPE) includes non-trivial correlations between jet and soft particle productions in small systems. We calibrate this framework with the final state hadrons' $p_T$-spectra from low to high $p_T$ in $p$-$p$, and and then compare with the spectra in $p$-$Pb$ collisions from the LHC. In an era where scientific experiments can be very costly, multi-fidelity emulators provide a useful tool for cost-efficient predictive scientific computing. For scientific applications, the experimenter is often limited by a tight computational budget, and thus wishes to (i) maximize predictive power of the multi-fidelity emulator via a careful design of experiments, and (ii) ensure this model achieves a desired error tolerance with some notion of confidence. Existing design methods, however, do not jointly tackle objectives (i) and (ii). We propose a novel stacking design approach that addresses both goals. A multi-level reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) interpolator is first introduced to build the emulator, under which our stacking design provides a sequential approach for designing multi-fidelity runs such that a desired prediction error of $\epsilon > 0$ is met under regularity assumptions. We then prove a novel cost complexity theorem that, under this multi-level interpolator, establishes a bound on the computation cost (for training data simulation) needed to achieve a prediction bound of $\epsilon$. This result provides novel insights on conditions under which the proposed multi-fidelity approach improves upon a conventional RKHS interpolator which relies on a single fidelity level. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of stacking designs in a suite of simulation experiments and an application to finite element analysis.

In an era where scientific experimentation is often costly, multi-fidelity emulation provides a powerful tool for predictive scientific computing. While there has been notable work on multi-fidelity modeling, existing models do not incorporate an important "conglomerate" property of multi-fidelity simulators, where the accuracies of different simulator components are controlled by different fidelity parameters. Such conglomerate simulators are widely encountered in complex nuclear physics and astrophysics applications. We thus propose a new CONglomerate multi-FIdelity Gaussian process (CONFIG) model, which embeds this conglomerate structure within a novel non-stationary covariance function. We show that the proposed CONFIG model can capture prior knowledge on the numerical convergence of conglomerate simulators, which allows for cost-efficient emulation of multi-fidelity systems. We demonstrate the improved predictive performance of CONFIG over state-of-the-art models in a suite of numerical experiments and two applications, the first for emulation of cantilever beam deflection and the second for emulating the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma, which was theorized to have filled the Universe shortly after the Big Bang.

Charge and spin order is intimately related to superconductivity in copper oxide superconductors. To elucidate the competing orders in various nickel oxide compounds are crucial given the fact that superconductivity has been discovered in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ films. Herein, we report structural, electronic transport, magnetic, and thermodynamic characterizations on single crystals of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$. La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ is metallic with mixed Ni$^{2+}$ and Ni$^{3+}$ valent states. Resistivity measurements yield two transition-like kinks at $\sim$110 and 153 K, respectively. The kink at 153 K is further revealed from magnetization and specific heat measurements, indicative of the formation of charge and spin order. La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ single crystals obtained from topochemical reduction of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ are insulating and show an anomaly at $\sim$176 K on magnetic susceptibility. The transition-like behaviors of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_6$ are analogous to the charge and spin order observed in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ and La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_8$, suggesting charge and spin order is a common feature in the ternary La-Ni-O system with mixed-valent states of nickel., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Interfacing topological insulators (TIs) with magnetic insulators (MIs) has been widely used to study the interaction between topological surface states and magnetism. Previous transport studies typically interpret the suppression of weak antilocalization or appearance of the anomalous Hall effect as signatures of magnetic proximity effect (MPE) imposed to TIs. Here, we report the observation of nonlinear planar Hall effect (NPHE) in Bi2Se3 films grown on MI thulium and yttrium iron garnet (TmIG and YIG) substrates, which is an order of magnitude larger than that in Bi2Se3 grown on nonmagnetic gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate. The nonlinear Hall resistance in TmIG/Bi2Se3 depends linearly on the external magnetic field, while that in YIG/Bi2Se3 exhibits an extra hysteresis loop around zero field. The magnitude of the NPHE is found to scale inversely with carrier density. We speculate the observed NPHE is related to the MPE-induced exchange gap opening and out-of-plane spin textures in the TI surface states, which may be used as an alternative transport signature of the MPE in MI/TI heterostructures.

In disordered transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor, both the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and disorder show remarkable effects on superconductivity. However, the features of SOC and disorder were rarely detected directly. Here we report the quantum transport behaviors arising from the interplay of SOC and disorder in the TMD superconductor 1T-NbSeTe. Before entering the superconducting state, the single crystal at low temperature shows a resistivity upturn, which is T1/2 dependent and insensitive to the applied magnetic fields. The magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures shows a H1/2 dependence at high magnetic fields. The characteristics are in good agreement with the electron-electron interaction (EEI) in a disordered conductor. In addition, the upturn changes and MR at low magnetic fields suggest the contribution of weak antilocalization (WAL) effect arising from the strong SOC in the material. Moreover, the quantitative analyses of the transport features in different samples imply anomalous disorder-enhanced superconductivity that needs to be further understood. The results reveal the disorder enhanced EEI and the strong SOC induced WAL effect in 1T-NbSeTe, which illustrate the resistivity minimum in the widely studied doped superconductors. The work also provides insights into the disorder effect on the superconductivity.

This study demonstrates the design and synthesis of Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2 system by partial substitution of Ir with Zr acting as a negative chemical pressure. With the doping of Zr, the cell parameters significantly expand, signifying an effective negative chemical pressure. The experimental results found evidence that the charge density wave (CDW)-like order is immediately quenched by subtle Zr substitution for Ir and a classical dome-shape Tc(x) that peaked at 2.80 K can be observed. The optimal Cu0.5Ir0.95Zr0.05Te2 compound is a BCS-type superconductor and exhibits type-II SC. However, high Zr concentration can provoke disorder, inducing the reappearance of CDW order. The present study shows that the Cu0.5Ir1-xZrxTe2 system may provide a new platform for further understanding of multiple electronic orders in transition metal dichalcogenides., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; The manuscript with the same title will be published by J. Measurements from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) can be used to study the properties of quark-gluon plasma. Systematic constraints on these properties must combine measurements from different collision systems and methodically account for experimental and theoretical uncertainties. Such studies require a vast number of costly numerical simulations. While computationally inexpensive surrogate models ("emulators") can be used to efficiently approximate the predictions of heavy ion simulations across a broad range of model parameters, training a reliable emulator remains a computationally expensive task. We use transfer learning to map the parameter dependencies of one model emulator onto another, leveraging similarities between different simulations of heavy ion collisions. By limiting the need for large numbers of simulations to only one of the emulators, this technique reduces the numerical cost of comprehensive uncertainty quantification when studying multiple collision systems and exploring different models., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, journal article

With advances in scientific computing and mathematical modeling, complex scientific phenomena such as galaxy formations and rocket propulsion can now be reliably simulated. Such simulations can however be very time-intensive, requiring millions of CPU hours to perform. One solution is multi-fidelity emulation, which uses data of different fidelities to train an efficient predictive model which emulates the expensive simulator. For complex scientific problems and with careful elicitation from scientists, such multi-fidelity data may often be linked by a directed acyclic graph (DAG) representing its scientific model dependencies. We thus propose a new Graphical Multi-fidelity Gaussian Process (GMGP) model, which embeds this DAG structure (capturing scientific dependencies) within a Gaussian process framework. We show that the GMGP has desirable modeling traits via two Markov properties, and admits a scalable algorithm for recursive computation of the posterior mean and variance along at each depth level of the DAG. We also present a novel experimental design methodology over the DAG given an experimental budget, and propose a nonlinear extension of the GMGP via deep Gaussian processes. The advantages of the GMGP are then demonstrated via a suite of numerical experiments and an application to emulation of heavy-ion collisions, which can be used to study the conditions of matter in the Universe shortly after the Big Bang. The proposed model has broader uses in data fusion applications with graphical structure, which we further discuss.
