Hypernuclei are bound states of nuclei with one or more hyperons. Precise measurements of hypernuclei properties and their production yields in heavy ion collisions are crucial for the understanding of their production mechanisms. The second phase of the Beam Energy Scan at RHIC (BES-II) offers us a great opportunity to investigate collision energy and system size dependence of hypernuclei production. In these proceedings, we present new measurements on transverse momentum ($p_{T}$), rapidity (y), and centrality dependence of $\rm {}^{3}_{\Lambda}H$ production yields in Au+Au collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 to 7.7 GeV. Heavy quarks, produced at early stages of heavy-ion collisions, are an excellent probe of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) also created in these collisions. Electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays (HFE) are good proxies for heavy quarks, and have been measured extensively in the last two decades to study QGP properties. These measurements are traditionally carried out by subtracting all known background sources from the inclusive electron sample. More recently, a significant enhancement of $e^+e^-$ pair production at very low transverse momenta was observed in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. The production characteristics is consistent with coherent photon-photon interactions, which should also constitute a background source to the HFE measurements. In this article, we provide theoretical predictions for the contribution of coherent electron production to HFE as a function of transverse momentum, centrality and collision energy in Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions.

High-energy backward ($u$-channel) reactions can involve very large momentum transfers to the target baryons, shifting them by many units of rapidity. These reactions are difficult to understand in conventional models in which baryon number is carried by the valence quarks. Backward Compton scattering is an especially attractive experimental target, because of its simple final state. There is currently limited data on this process, and that data is at low center-of-mass energies. In this paper, we examine the prospects for studying backward Compton scattering at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We model the cross-section and kinematics using the limited data on backward Compton scattering and backward meson production, and then simulate Compton scattering at EIC energies, in a simple model of the ePIC detector. Generally, the proton is scattered toward mid-rapidity, while the produced photon is in the far-forward region, visible in a Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC). We show that the background from backward $\pi^0$ production can be rejected using a high-resolution, well-segmented ZDC., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

At high luminosity areas, beam loss monitor with fast response and high radiation resistance is crucial for accelerator operation. In this article, we report the design and test results of a fast response and radiation-resistant scintillator detector as the beam loss monitor for high luminosity colliders, especially at low energy regions such as RFQ. The detector consists of a 2 cm*2 cm 0.5 cm LYSO crystal readout by a 6 mm*6 mm Silicon photomultiplier. Test results from various radioactive sources show that the detector has good sensitivity to photons from tens of keV to several MeV with good linearity and energy resolution (23% for 60 keV {\gamma}-ray). For the field test, two such detectors are installed outside of the vacuum chamber shell of an 800 MeV electron storage ring. The details of the test and results are introduced.

Study of the transverse structure of the proton is one of the major physics goals of the upcoming Electron Ion Collider (EIC). The gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) form an essential focus of this effort and are important towards understanding the angular momentum contribution to proton spin as well as QCD factorization. However, very limited experimental constraints on the gluon TMD exist currently. As the heavy quark production in lepton-nucleon DIS gets a dominant contribution from the photon-gluon-fusion process, heavy quark production makes an attractive tool to probe gluon distributions in nucleons. In this paper we present a study of heavy flavor hadron pair reconstruction at a future EIC detector with MAPS based inner tracking and vertexing subsystems to constrain gluon TMD. We utilize the excellent track pointing resolution provided by the detector to exclusively reconstruct heavy flavor hadron pairs via their hadronic decay channels and also to develop a heavy flavor hadron tagging algorithm. Statistical uncertainty projections on azimuthal asymmetries corresponding to gluon TMD at the EIC is evaluated. The heavy flavor tagging is found to substantially enhance the purity of heavy flavor hadron pair selection, and the statistical precision of the measurement compared to that from exclusive reconstruction. The correlation between the azimuthal angle of the transverse momentum of the gluon initiating the process and that of the corresponding heavy flavor hadron pair was also studied and found to be well correlated. In backward photoproduction of mesons, $\gamma p\rightarrow M p$, the target proton takes most of the photon momentum, while the produced meson recoils in the direction from which the photon came. Thus the Mandelstam $u$ is small, while the squared momentum transfer $t$ is typically large, near the kinematic limit. In a collider geometry, backward production transfers the struck baryon by many units of rapidity, in a striking similarity to baryon stopping. We explore this similarity, and point out the similarities between the Regge theories used to model baryon stopping with those that are used for backward production. We then explore how backward production can be explored at higher energies than are available at fixed target experiments, by studying production at an electron-ion collider. We calculate the expected $ep$ cross sections and rates, finding that the rate for backward $\omega$ production is about 1/300 that of forward $\omega$s. We report an underlying event tune for the PYTHIA 8 Monte Carlo event generator that is applicable for hadron collisions primarily at $\sqrt{s}$ ranges available at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). We compare our new PYTHIA 8 tuned predictions to mid-rapidity inclusive $\pi^{\pm}$ spectra, jet sub-structure, Drell-Yan production, and underlying event measurements from RHIC and the Tevatron, as well as underlying event data from the Large Hadron Collider. With respect to the default PYTHIA 8 Monash Tune, the new `Detroit' tune shows significant improvements in the description of the experimental data. Additionally, we explore the validity of PYTHIA 8 predictions for forward rapidity $\pi$ in $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV collisions, where neither tune is able to sufficiently describe the data. We advocate for the new tune to be used for PYTHIA 8 studies at current and future RHIC experiments, and discuss future tuning exercises at lower center-of-mass energies, where forward/backward kinematics are essential at the upcoming Electron-Ion collider.

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will be a precision Quantum Chromodynamics machine that will enable a vast physics program with electron+proton/ion collisions across a broad center-of-mass range. Measurements of hard probes such as heavy flavor in deep inelastic scatterings will be an essential component to the EIC physics program and are one of the detector R\&D driving aspects. In this paper we study the projected statistical precision of open charm hadron production through exclusive hadronic channel reconstruction with a silicon detector concept currently being developed using a PYTHIA-based simulation. We further study the impact of possible intrinsic charm in the proton on projected data, and estimate the constraint on the nuclear gluon parton distribution function (PDF) from the charm structure functions $F_{2}^{c\overline{c}}$ in $e$+Au collisions using a Bayesian PDF re-weighting technique. Our studies show the EIC will be capable delivering an unprecedented measurement of charm hadron production across a broad kinematic region and will provide strong constraints to both intrinsic charm and nuclear gluon PDFs.

The proposed electron-ion collider has a rich physics program to study the internal structure of protons and heavy nuclei. This program will impose strict requirements on detector design.
