BackgroundHemispatial neglect (HSN) was diagnosed using a virtual reality-based test (FOPR test) that explores the field of perception (FOP) and field of regard (FOR). Here, we developed virtual reality-visual exploration therapy (VR-VET) combining elements from the FOPR test and visual exploration therapy (VET) and examined its efficacy for HSN rehabilitation following stroke.MethodsEleven participants were randomly assigned to different groups, training with VR-VET first then waiting without VR-VET training (TW), or vice versa (WT). The TW group completed 20 sessions of a VR-VET program using a head-mounted display followed by 4 weeks of waiting, while the WT group completed the opposite regimen. Clinical HSN measurements [line bisection test (LBT), star cancellation test (SCT), Catherine Bergego Scale (CBS), CBS perceptual-attentional (CBS-PA), and CBS motor-explanatory (CBS-ME)] and FOPR tests [response time (RT), success rate (SR), and head movement (HM) for both FOP and FOR] were assessed by blinded face-to-face assessments.ResultsFive and six participants were allocated to the TW and WT groups, respectively, and no dropout occurred throughout the study. VR-VET considerably improved LBT scores, FOR variables (FOR-RT, FOR-SR), FOP-LEFT variables (FOP-LEFT-RT, FOP-LEFT-SR), and FOR-LEFT variables (FOR-LEFT-RT, FOR-LEFT-SR) compared to waiting without VR-VET. Additionally, VR-VET extensively improved FOP-SR, CBS, and CBS-PA, where waiting failed to make a significant change. The VR-VET made more improvements in the left hemispace than in the right hemispace in FOP-RT, FOP-SR, FOR-RT, and FOR-SR.ConclusionThe observed improvements in clinical assessments and FOPR tests represent the translatability of these improvements to real-world function and the multi-dimensional effects of VR-VET training.Clinical trial registrationhttps://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03463122, identifier NCT03463122.

Grain boundaries typically dominate the electrical properties of polycrystalline ceramics. To understand the effect of grain boundaries on the electrical conductivity of SiC ceramics sintered with 2000 ppm Y2O3, the electrical resistivity of individual grains and multi-grains across boundaries at the micron scale was measured using a nano-probing system equipped with nano-manipulators. The results revealed that grain resistivity was bimodal because of the existence of a core/rim structure in grains, and the electrical resistivity of multigrain samples slowly increased with an increase in the number of grain boundaries crossed. Specifically, the electrical resistivity of a grain without a core, a grain with a core, a bicrystal with a single boundary, a sample crossing three boundaries, and a bulk polycrystalline sample were 2.36 × 10-1, 5.05 × 10-1, 4.80 × 10-1, 5.04 × 10-1, and 5.84 × 10-1 Ω cm, respectively. The results suggest that the electrical resistivity of polycrystalline SiC ceramics is primarily influenced by the presence of a grain boundary or core and secondarily by the number of boundaries.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effect of self-esteem and spouse support on prenatal depression.Methods: The subjects were 131 pregnant women who visited two women clinics located in Changwon City. Data were collected from September 25 to November 20, 2019, and the self-report questionnaire included spouse support, self-esteem, and prenatal depression. Objective To translate the Stroke Rehabilitation Motivation Scale (SRMS), developed to evaluate the motivation level of stroke patients during rehabilitation, into the Korean language and to verify the reliability and validity of the Korean version of SRMS (K-SRMS).Methods The K-SRMS was developed following a structured process that included translation, verification, compromise assessment, reverse translation, feedback, and final correction. K-SRMS reliability was evaluated by performing internal consistency and test–retest analyses. The reliability test was conducted in 50 stroke patients. Its validity was assessed by comparing the K-SRMS with the scale and performing exploratory factor analysis. The validity test was conducted in 102 stroke patients.Results The test–retest analysis showed good reliability, and the internal consistency of the K-SRMS was similar to that of the original version for all, except 4, items. Thus, these 4 items were excluded, and then the validity test was conducted. Although Krüppel-associated box domain-containing zinc-finger proteins (K-ZNFs) may be associated with sophisticated gene regulation in higher organisms, the physiological functions of most K-ZNFs remain unknown. The Zfp212 protein was highly conserved in mammals and abundant in the brain; it was mainly expressed in the cerebellum (Cb). Zfp212 (mouse homolog of human ZNF212) knockout (Zfp212-KO) mice showed a reduction in survival rate compared to wild-type mice after 20 months of age. GABAergic Purkinje cell degeneration in the Cb and aberrant locomotion were observed in adult Zfp212-KO mice. To identify genes related to the ataxia-like phenotype of Zfp212-KO mice, 39 ataxia-associated genes in the Cb were monitored. Substantial alterations in the expression of ataxin 10, protein phosphatase 2 regulatory subunit beta, protein kinase C gamma, and phospholipase D3 (Pld3) were observed. Among them, Pld3 alone was tightly regulated by Flag-tagged ZNF212 overexpression or Zfp212 knockdown in the HT22 cell line. The Cyclic Amplification and Selection of Targets assay identified the TATTTC sequence as a recognition motif of ZNF212, and these motifs occurred in both human and mouse PLD3 gene promoters. Adeno-associated virus-mediated introduction of human ZNF212 into the Cb of 3-week-old Zfp212-KO mice prevented Purkinje cell death and motor behavioral deficits. We confirmed the reduction of Zfp212 and Pld3 in the Cb of an alcohol-induced cerebellar degeneration mouse model, suggesting that the ZNF212–PLD3 relationship is important for Purkinje cell survival.

Solid oxide cells (SOCs) are promising sustainable and efficient electrochemical energy conversion devices. The application of a bilayer electrolyte comprising wide electrolytic oxide and highly conductive oxide is essential to lower the operating temperatures while maintaining high performance. However, a structurally and chemically ideal bilayer has been unattainable through cost-effective conventional ceramic processes. Here, we describe a strategy of naturally diffused sintering aid allowing the fabrication of defect-free doped-zirconia/doped-ceria bilayer electrolyte with full density and reduced interdiffusion layer at lower sintering temperature owing to the supply of small but appropriate amount of sintering aid from doped zirconia to doped ceria that makes the thermal shrinkages of both layers perfectly congruent. The resulting SOCs exhibit a minimal ohmic loss of 0.09 ohm cm

Background: Mangosteen and propolis extracts (MAEC) have been potential therapeutic agents known to exhibit powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical and immunological efficacy of MAEC as well as safety and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) on gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. Methods: This study was performed on 104 patients diagnosed with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis. At baseline, the participants were randomly allocated to either the test group, with daily intake of a single capsule containing 194 mg of MAEC for eight weeks, or control group, with placebo. Clinical periodontal evaluation and immunological parameters from saliva and gingival sulcular fluid were assessed at baseline, four, and eight weeks. Individual PROMs were assessed by OHIP-14 questionnaires. Results: There was a significant difference of modified gingival index at four and eight weeks between the test and control groups. In the test group, crevicular interleukin (IL)-6 was reduced, and the salivary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 was increased after eight weeks. PROMs were improved up to four weeks compared to placebo. Conclusion: Oral administration of MAEC would have a potential to reduce gingival inflammation clinically and immunologically in the patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.

Modular snake robot has the ability to maneuver narrow, complex, and unstructured environments. In recent years, Snake robot with 3-D locomotion has been studied by researchers for inspection of pipes, and stairs climbing etc. One of the effective approaches to accomplishing such complex tasks is by designing gaits for modular snake robot. In this paper, A Spiral curve gait along with rolling motion is proposed to adapt to the changes in the pipe diameter while moving on the pipe, which cannot be overcome by a simple helical rolling motion. The joint angles are calculated using Bellow’s model, based on the curvature and torsion of the backbone curve. We validated the proposed gait by simulating thirty degrees of freedom modular snake robot in Open Dynamics Engine simulator.

We propose a new method for preparing atom probe tomography specimens from nanoparticles using a fusible bismuth–indium–tin alloy as an embedding medium. Iron nanoparticles synthesized by the sodium borohydride reduction method were chosen as a model system. The as-synthesized iron nanoparticles were embedded within the fusible alloy using focused ion beam milling and ion-milled to needle-shaped atom probe specimens under cryogenic conditions. An atom probe analysis revealed boron atoms in a detected iron nanoparticle, indicating that boron from the sodium borohydride reductant was incorporated into the nanoparticle during its synthesis.

α-Synuclein (α-syn) is a hallmark amyloidogenic protein component of Lewy bodies in dopaminergic neurons affected by Parkinson’s disease (PD). Despite the multi-faceted gene regulation of α-syn in the nucleus, the mechanism underlying α-syn crosstalk in chromatin remodeling in PD pathogenesis remains elusive. Here, we identified transcriptional adapter 2-alpha (TADA2a) as a novel binding partner of α-syn using the BioID system. TADA2a is a component of the p300/CBP-associated factor and is related to histone H3/H4 acetylation. We found that α-syn A53T was more preferentially localized in the nucleus than the α-syn wild-type (WT), leading to a stronger disturbance of TADA2a. Indeed, α-syn A53T significantly reduced the level of histone H3 acetylation in SH-SY5Y cells, its reduction was also evident in the striatum (STR) and substantia nigra (SN) of mice that were stereotaxically injected with α-syn preformed fibrils (PFFs). Interestingly, α-syn PFF injection resulted in a decrease in TADA2a in the STR and SN of α-syn PFF-injected mice. Furthermore, the levels of TADA2a and acetylated histone H3 were significantly decreased in the SN of patients with PD. Therefore, histone modification through α-syn A53T-TADA2a interaction may be associated with α-syn-mediated neurotoxicity in PD pathology.

Background We previously proposed a novel virtual reality-based method to assess human field of perception (FOP) and field of regard (FOR), termed the FOPR test. This study assessed the diagnostic validity of the FOPR test for hemispatial neglect (HSN). Methods We included 19 stroke patients with a lesion in the right hemisphere and with HSN (HSN+SS), 22 stroke patients with a lesion in the right hemisphere and without HSN (HSN−SS), and 22 healthy controls aged 19–65 years. The success rate (SR) and response time (RT) in the FOPR test for both FOP and FOR were assessed (FOP-SR, FOR-SR, FOP-RT, and FOR-RT, respectively). Using a Bland–Altman plot, agreements between the FOPR test and conventional tests were confirmed, and the FOPR test accuracy was verified using the support vector machine (SVM). Measured values were analysed using ANOVA and Kruskall–Wallis tests for group comparison. Results The Bland–Altman plot showed good agreement between FOPR test and conventional tests; individuals within 95% agreement limits were within the range of 94.8–100.0%. The SVM classification accuracy, using FOP and FOR variables from the left hemispace, ranged from 83.3 to 100.0% in a binary classification (HSN vs non-HSN). The FOPR test demonstrated differences in SR and RT for both FOP and FOR across the groups. Conclusion The FOPR test was valid for the HSN diagnosis and provided quantitative and intuitive information regarding visuospatial function. Furthermore, it might enhance our understanding of visuospatial function including HSN by applying the time relative component and concepts of perception and exploration, FOP and FOR. This paper proposes a hybrid singulation approach combining dynamic scattering and pushing techniques. Using the impulse-based dynamic model, a guideline is provided to decide whether scattering or pushing is conducted for object singulation. The Soma cube consisting of seven blocks is used as the test example. The target is to singulate all the blocks. The dynamic scattering technique was initially applied to separate blocks in the formation. However, scattering alone does not provide target singulation in all the cases. So we combine the quasi-static pushing technique to complete the singulation of all the blocks. In pushing, image segmentation based on principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm was employed to singulate multiple blocks in clutter and prehensile manipulation was used to remove isolated blocks. Several 2-D formations of the Soma cube are used as the test cases. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we have conducted comparative analysis which clearly shows that the hybrid singulation achieves singulation in much less time as compared to the pure pushing approach.

A 10-year-old, spayed female, Doberman Pinscher dog presented with right forelimb lameness. On physical examination, painful reaction and crepitation were present at the right shoulder. Radiographic evaluation of the shoulder revealed nothing remarkable. On the ultrasonography of the right shoulder joint, 2 small echogenic masses accompanied by reverberation artifacts were observed in the right biceps tendon near its origin at the supraglenoid tuberosity. Based on these findings, we suspected biceps calcifying tendinopathy. Clinical signs resolved intermittently after administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. This study described the ultrasonographic findings of calcifying biceps brachii tendinopathy which is an unusual finding in dogs.

Background Robotic rehabilitation of stroke survivors with upper extremity dysfunction may yield different outcomes depending on the robot type. Considering that excessive dependence on assistive force by robotic actuators may interfere with the patient’s active learning and participation, we hypothesised that the use of an active-assistive robot with robotic actuators does not lead to a more meaningful difference with respect to upper extremity rehabilitation than the use of a passive robot without robotic actuators. Accordingly, we aimed to evaluate the differences in the clinical and kinematic outcomes between active-assistive and passive robotic rehabilitation among stroke survivors. Methods In this single-blinded randomised controlled pilot trial, we assigned 20 stroke survivors with upper extremity dysfunction (Medical Research Council scale score, 3 or 4) to the active-assistive robotic intervention (ACT) and passive robotic intervention (PSV) groups in a 1:1 ratio and administered 20 sessions of 30-min robotic intervention (5 days/week, 4 weeks). The primary (Wolf Motor Function Test [WMFT]-score and -time: measures activity), and secondary (Fugl-Meyer Assessment [FMA] and Stroke Impact Scale [SIS] scores: measure impairment and participation, respectively; kinematic outcomes) outcome measures were determined at baseline, after 2 and 4 weeks of the intervention, and 4 weeks after the end of the intervention. Furthermore, we evaluated the usability of the robots through interviews with patients, therapists, and physiatrists. Results In both the groups, the WMFT-score and -time improved over the course of the intervention. Time had a significant effect on the WMFT-score and -time, FMA-UE, FMA-prox, and SIS-strength; group × time interaction had a significant effect on SIS-function and SIS-social participation (all, p Conclusions There were no differences between the two groups regarding the impairment and activity domains. However, the PSV robots were more beneficial than ACT robots regarding participation and smoothness. Considering the high cost and complexity of ACT robots, PSV robots might be more suitable for rehabilitation in stroke survivors capable of voluntary movement. This paper presents an integrated planner based on rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) for an assembly task with possible re-grasping. Given multiple grasp poses for the part to assemble, the planner chooses candidate grasp poses considering the environment (including the partially finished assembly) in addition to the initial and final poses of the part. Orientation graph search based re-grasping approach is proposed for part manipulation which is needed when there is no feasible grasp solution for a part between its initial and final poses. Orientation graph search helps finding a series of the intermediate poses of the part needed between its initial and final poses so that robot can grasp and assemble it without interfering the pre-assembled parts. Then while extending the tree, the algorithm tries to connect the tree to a robot configuration with a chosen candidate grasp pose. Also, since the task space undergoes changes at each step of the assembly task, a node or edge in the tree can become in collision during the assembly of later parts, making the node in collision and its descendant nodes disconnected from the whole tree. To handle this, Two stage extended RRT strategy is proposed. The disconnected parts of the main tree are put into forest, and attempts are made to re-connect the tree in the forest to main tree while extending the main tree, thus making it possible to use the disconnected part again. The algorithm is implemented in Linux based system using C++. The proposed algorithm is demonstrated experimentally using UR5e robot manipulator by assembling the soma puzzle pieces in different 3D formations.

Accelerated capacity fading of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM111) electrode by the chemical migration of lithium (Li) or transition metals (TMs), and surface reconstruction in the surface during electrochemical cycling were evaluated by correlative analysis of atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The cycled NCM111 showed a lack of Li at surface which provides the driving force for long-range Ni migration toward surface. A schematic model for phase transformation and the kinetics of TM migration within the layered structure by density functional theory (DFT) calculations was proposed. This study provides insights into capacity loss and voltage fade upon electrochemical charge-discharge process of NCM111 by measuring the variation of Li composition away from the surface.

This paper presents a hybrid singulation strategy for fast object singulation in a cluttered environment. Recent techniques related to object singulation in clutter have employed various kinds of pushing techniques and in some cases have also used hitting techniques. However, these techniques have not addressed the issue related to the direction of pushing and hitting which is vital for fast object singulation. Finding the appropriate direction of hitting and pushing helps in singulating objects quickly in a cluttered environment. This paper proposes the desired direction for pushing and hitting, combined with a hybrid strategy, that results in fast object singulation in a cluttered environment. The number of times of pushing and hitting in terms of time is chosen as the measure of performance. We employ multiple circular disks as the test example and carry out diverse experiments to corroborate the usefulness of the proposed object singulation algorithm. This approach is able to singulate objects quickly in complex formations. In this paper, we have combined both pushing and hitting and also proposed the direction of hitting and pushing in order to singulate objects in clutter quickly.

Pediococcus pentosaceus ID-7 was isolated from kimchi, a Korean fermented food, and it showed high activity for lactose hydrolysis. The β-galactosidase of P. pentosaceus ID-7 belongs to the GH2 group, which is composed of two distinct proteins. The heterodimeric LacLM type of β-galactosidase found in P. pentosaceus ID-7 consists of two genes partially overlapped, lacL and lacM encoding LacL (72.2 kDa) and LacM (35.4 kDa). In this study, Escherichia coli MM294 was used for the production of LacL, LacM, and LacLM. These three types of recombinant proteins were expressed, purified, and characterized. The specific activities of LacLM and LacL were 339 and 31 U/mg, respectively. However, activity was not detected with LacM alone. The optimal pH of LacLM and LacL was pH 7.5 and pH 7.0, and the optimal temperature of LacLM and LacL was 40°C and 50°C, respectively. The optimal temperature changes indicate that LacLM is able to achieve higher activity at a relatively lower temperature. LacLM was strongly activated by Mg2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+, which was not true for LacL. Consistent with this, EDTA strongly inactivated LacLM and LacL, but the presence of reducing agents did not dramatically alter the activity. Taken together, multiple alignment of amino acid sequences and phylogenetic analysis results of LacL and LacM of P. pentosaceus ID-7 suggest the evolution of LacL into LacLM and that the use of divalent metal ions results in higher activity.

Background Virtual reality (VR)-based rehabilitation is considered a beneficial therapeutic option for stroke rehabilitation. This pilot study assessed the clinical feasibility of a newly developed VR-based planar motion exercise apparatus (Rapael Smart Board™ [SB]; Neofect Inc., Yong-in, Korea) for the upper extremities as an intervention and assessment tool. Methods This single-blinded, randomized, controlled trial included 26 stroke survivors. Patients were randomized to the intervention group (SB group) or control (CON) group. During one session, patients in the SB group completed 30 min of intervention using the SB and an additional 30 min of standard occupational therapy; however, those in the CON group completed the same amount of conventional occupational therapy. The primary outcome was the change in the Fugl–Meyer assessment (FMA) score, and the secondary outcomes were changes in the Wolf motor function test (WMFT) score, active range of motion (AROM) of the proximal upper extremities, modified Barthel index (MBI), and Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) score. A within-group analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and a between-group analysis was performed using a repeated measures analysis of covariance. Additionally, correlations between SB assessment data and clinical scale scores were analyzed by repeated measures correlation. Assessments were performed three times (baseline, immediately after intervention, and 1 month after intervention). Results All functional outcome measures (FMA, WMFT, and MBI) showed significant improvements (p p = 0.038). Some parameters of the SB assessment, such as the explored area ratio, mean reaching distance, and smoothness, were significantly associated with clinical upper limb functional measurements with moderate correlation coefficients. Conclusions The SB was available for improving upper limb function and health-related quality of life and useful for assessing upper limb ability in stroke survivors. End-effector (EE) and exoskeleton (Exo) robots have not been directly compared previously. The present study aimed to directly compare EE and Exo robots in chronic stroke patients with moderate-to-severe upper limb impairment. This single-blinded, randomised controlled trial included 38 patients with stroke who were admitted to the rehabilitation hospital. The patients were equally divided into EE and Exo groups. Baseline characteristics, including sex, age, stroke type, brain lesion side (left/right), stroke duration, Fugl–Meyer Assessment (FMA)–Upper Extremity score, and Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) score, were assessed. Additionally, impairment level (FMA, motor status score), activity (WMFT), and participation (stroke impact scale [SIS]) were evaluated. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the groups. After the intervention, improvements were significantly better in the EE group with regard to activity and participation (WMFT–Functional ability rating scale, WMFT–Time, and SIS–Participation). There was no intervention-related adverse event. The EE robot intervention is better than the Exo robot intervention with regard to activity and participation among chronic stroke patients with moderate-to-severe upper limb impairment. Further research is needed to confirm this novel finding.

Accumulation of the parkin-interacting substrate (PARIS; ZNF746), due to inactivation of parkin, contributes to Parkinson's disease (PD) through repression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α; PPARGC1A) activity. Here, we identify farnesol as an inhibitor of PARIS. Farnesol promoted the farnesylation of PARIS, preventing its repression of PGC-1α via decreasing PARIS occupancy on the PPARGC1A promoter. Farnesol prevented dopaminergic neuronal loss and behavioral deficits via farnesylation of PARIS in PARIS transgenic mice, ventral midbrain transduction of AAV-PARIS, adult conditional parkin KO mice, and the α-synuclein preformed fibril model of sporadic PD. PARIS farnesylation is decreased in the substantia nigra of patients with PD, suggesting that reduced farnesylation of PARIS may play a role in PD. Thus, farnesol may be beneficial in the treatment of PD by enhancing the farnesylation of PARIS and restoring PGC-1α activity.

Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injections improve muscle tone and range of motion (ROM) among stroke patients with upper limb spasticity. However, the efficacy of BTX-A injections for improving active function is unclear. We aimed to determine whether BTX-A injections with electrical stimulation (ES) of hand muscles could improve active hand function (AHF) among chronic stroke patients. Our open-label, pilot study included 15 chronic stroke patients. Two weeks after BTX-A injections into the finger and/or wrist flexors, ES of finger extensors was performed while wearing a wrist brace for 4 weeks (5 days per week, 30-min sessions). Various outcomes were assessed at baseline, immediately before BTX-A injections, and 2 and 6 weeks after BTX-A injections. After the intervention, we noted significant improvements in Box and Block test results, Action Research Arm Test results, the number of repeated finger flexions/extensions, which reflect AHF, and flexor spasticity. Moreover, significant improvements in active ROM of wrist extension values were accompanied by marginally significant changes in Medical Research Council wrist extensor and active ROM of wrist flexion values. In conclusion, BTX-A injections into the finger and/or wrist flexors followed by ES of finger extensors improve AHF among chronic stroke patients.

This paper proposes an adaptive RRT (Rapidly-exploring Random Tree) for path planning of high DOF multibody robotic system. For an efficient path planning in high-dimensional configuration space, the proposed algorithm adaptively selects the robot bodies depending on the complexity of path planning. Then, the RRT grows only using the DOFs corresponding with the selected bodies. Since the RRT is extended in the configuration space with adaptive dimensionality, the RRT can grow in the lower dimensional configuration space. Thus the adaptive RRT method executes a faster path planning and smaller DOF for a robot. We implement our algorithm for path planning of 19 DOF robot, AMIRO. The results from our simulations show that the adaptive RRTbased path planner is more efficient than the basic RRT-based path planner.

Glass is widely used as finishing material to improve both building interiors and exteriors. As buildings are becoming larger, the materials used are also increasing in size to reduce the time required for construction. To manipulate a heavy duty panel glass intuitively, we proposed an installation methodology based on human–robot cooperation for a glazing robot. Here, we classified all types of glass installation robots, and then analyzed the installation methods compared to construction workers. We propose a human–robot cooperation method that is similar to installation method of construction worker and detail the requirements. In addition, a control system for using intuitive manipulation device is implemented. We confirmed that the glass installation work using intuitive manipulation device is more efficient than existing methods through a simple experimental setup. This method combines operator's control ability and robot's power. It is expected that glass installation work will not only be more efficient but also safer.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) causes porcine pleuropneumonia (PP).Serotypes and antimicrobial resistance patterns in APP isolates from pigs in Korea were examined.Sixty-five APP isolates were genetically serotyped using standard and multiplex PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Antimicrobial susceptibilities were tested using the standardized disk-agar method. PCR was used to detect β-lactam, gentamicin and tetracycline-resistance genes. The random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns were determined by PCR.Korean pigs predominantly carried APP serotypes 1 and 5. Among 65 isolates, one isolate was sensitive to all 12 antimicrobials tested in this study. Sixty-two isolates was resistant to tetracycline and 53 isolates carried one or five genes including tet(B), tet(A), tet(H), tet(M)/tet(O), tet(C), tet(G) and/or tet(L)-1 markers. Among 64 strains, 9% and 26.6% were resistance to 10 and three or more antimicrobials, respectively. Thirteen different antimicrobial resistance patterns were observed and RAPD analysis revealed a separation of the isolates into two clusters: cluster II (6 strains resistant to 10 antimicrobials) and cluster I (the other 59 strains).Results show that APP serotypes 1 and 5 are the most common in Korea, and multi-drug resistant strains are prevalent. RAPD analysis demonstrated that six isolates resistant to 10 antimicrobials belonged to the same cluster.
