Abstract The challenges associated with liquid biopsy of colorectal cancer (CRC) are closely linked to the substantial variations observed in gene expression profiles among patients. This variability complicates the selection of an ideal biomarker for accurate diagnosis. In this report, we propose that employing a combination of miRNAs offers a better change for enhancing the accuracy of CRC diagnosis compared to solely relying on single miRNAs. As an illustrative example, we measured 9 miRNAs from 45 patient samples (comprising 31 CRC cases and 14 healthy controls) via RT-qPCR. We then utilized two methods: (1) LASSO regression for marker ranking and (2) linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to identify the optimal weighted combination of multiple markers. Our data indicates that combination of triple markers, selected based on their ranking, exhibited the highest diagnostic performance, including a sensitivity of 93.6% (95% confidence interval, CI 79.3–98.9%), specificity of 100% (CI 78.5–100.0%), positive predictive value (PPV) of 100%, negative predictive value (NPV) of 87.5%, and an overall accuracy of 95.6%. In contrast, the diagnostic performance of each individual miRNA used in the triple marker combination ranged from 53.3 to 80.0% in accuracy. While we acknowledge the need for further extensive studies involving larger patient cohorts and the consideration of additional miRNA candidates, our research undeniably highlights the potential of combining multiple markers as a robust methodology for identifying biomarkers among heterogeneous patient profiles.

Objective To advance the modernization of rail transit control systems and enhance their safety, reliability and operational efficiency, a cloud-based control system architecture for rail transit is designed. The aim is to effectively integrate and deploy both the safety-critical and non-safety-critical functions of rail transit system onto a cloud platform. Method A cross-regional distributed control is realized by connecting target controllers to cloud platform servers via optical fiber. Characteristics of the rail transit cloud control system are analyzed, safety requirements of the system are outlined across six aspects: time management, space management, shared resource management, operation mode management, degradation mode management and safety monitoring. Result & Conclusion The virtualization layers of the cloud platform must be designed to ensure spatial isolation, temporal isolation, fault isolation, as well as management, predictability, security, and confidentiality. The platform scheduling mechanism includes both time-triggered and event-driven approaches, each impacting the platform temporal constraints differently. The hierarchical scheduling of the cloud platform involves four resource-sharing protocols, which must be selected based on different tasks.

Abstract This study investigated the effect of early dental visit on subsequent dental treatments in preterm infants and whether there was a significant difference in dental treatment between children born preterm and full-term (FT). National data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service in Korea were analyzed. Prescription codes related to dental treatments were collected. This study included 3,354,662 patients under age 6 years, who were categorized by gestational age: extremely preterm (EPT), very preterm (VPT), and late preterm (LPT). In the preterm group, the percentage of children with no dental visits was 63.87% although the preterm group visited the dentist earlier than the FT group (EPT = 2.84, VPT = 2.78, LPT = 2.52, FT = 3.9 years old). Wildlife crime, especially in the notably hard-hit region of Sichuan and Chongqing, constitutes a pivotal research domain within green criminology research. Taking this region as the core research area, grounding our analysis in the theoretical framework of social-ecological systems theory, using spatial analysis, geo-detector and other methods, to explore the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and influencing factors of wildlife crime in the Sichuan-Chongqing region. Study findings include the following: (1) wildlife crimes in the Sichuan-Chongqing regions mainly involve illegal hunting and killing precious and endangered wildlife, the species involved are predominantly birds and beasts, with the number of pheasants of the pheasant family, owls, and various snakes of the reptile family being the most numerous. The main body of the offence is far more men than women, and young adult Han people are often involved. The overall cultural level is low, and the main job is farming. (2) A single wildlife crime often involves a number of offenses; the most common criminal process involves (seller) hunting/hunting-killing-transportation-selling-(buyer) acquisition. (3) The overall inter-annual variation of the crime shows strong volatility, which can be divided into a gradual growth phase, a sharp decline phase and a sharp growth phase, the monthly distribution is high in November. (4) The overall pattern of "high incidence in the east and west and low incidence in the center" is shown in the city scale; in the county scale, the Shuangliu District of Chengdu City and Wanzhou District of Chongqing City are the most common. In microplaces, there are differences in the main places where offences are committed and transacted under different offences. (5) The occurrence of crime is mainly affected by the average annual temperature, total water resources, the state of natural ecosystems and other natural factors, male and female gender ratio, level of education, transport network density, ease of access and other socio-economic and cultural factors; the level of consumption of the population, the rate of natural growth and the combination of other factors have a significant impact on wildlife crime. The integrated crime pattern theory and rational choice theory suggest that by rationally considering multiple factors such as the natural environment (e.g. abundant wildlife resources and hidden habitats), the social environment (e.g. weak regulation, strong market demand or weak public awareness of protection) and their own psychological characteristics (e.g. the relationship between costs and benefits), offenders are more likely to convert their criminal intent into actual action, which will in turn The criminal intent is more likely to be transformed into actual action, thus contributing to the eventual occurrence of the criminal behaviour.

Abstract This study aims to figure out the worldwide prevalence of anticancer therapy-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) and tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) and the relative risk of each cancer drug. We conducted an analysis of VigiBase, the World Health Organization pharmacovigilance database, 1967–2023 via disproportionate Bayesian reporting method. We further categorized the anticancer drugs into four groups: cytotoxic therapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. Reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) compares observed and expected values to investigate the associations of each category of anticancer drugs with AKI and TIN. We identified 32,722 and 2056 reports (male, n = 17,829 and 1,293) of anticancer therapy-associated AKI and TIN, respectively, among 4,592,036 reports of all-drug caused AKI and TIN. There has been a significant increase in reports since 2010, primarily due to increased reports of targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Immunotherapy exhibited a significant association with both AKI (ROR: 8.92; IC0.25: 3.06) and TIN (21.74; 4.24), followed by cytotoxic therapy (7.14; 2.68), targeted therapy (5.83; 2.40), and hormone therapy (2.59; 1.24) for AKI, and by cytotoxic therapy (2.60; 1.21) and targeted therapy (1.54; 0.61) for TIN. AKI and TIN were more prevalent among individuals under 45 years of age, with a female preponderance for AKI and males for TIN. These events were reported in close temporal relationship after initiation of the respective drug (16.53 days for AKI and 27.97 days for TIN), and exhibited a high fatality rate, with 23.6% for AKI and 16.3% for TIN. These findings underscore that kidney-related adverse drug reactions are of prognostic significance and strategies to mitigate such side effects are required to optimize anticancer therapy.

Objectives This study investigated the association between eating habits and the utilization of dietary supplements (DSs) according to food-related lifestyle (FRL) among Korean adults. Methods This study included a total of 300 participants (150 men and 150 women) in their 20s to 60s living in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. We identified two groups by factor and cluster analysis: an ‘active pursuit’ group and a ‘passive pursuit’ group. Differences in eating habits and DS utilization between the two groups were analyzed by chi-square test and t-test. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the effect of variables on DS consumption according to FRL. Results There were significant differences between the two groups in terms of age, alcohol drinking frequency, total dietary score, change in DS consumption after coronavirus disease 2019, and current DS consumption (P < 0.05). The proportion who perceived many health benefits of DSs was higher in the ‘active pursuit’ group than in the ‘passive pursuit’ group (P = 0.003). The most commonly consumed type of DSs was multivitamins & minerals for the ‘active pursuit’ group, and omega-3 fatty acids for the ‘passive pursuit’ group. The ‘an active pursuit’ group consumed DSs 2.93 times more (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.44–5.97) compared to the ‘passive pursuit’ group, after adjusting for confounders. In the ‘active pursuit’ group, the health pursuit (odds ratio [OR] = 6.54, 95% CI: 1.44–29.61) and rational consumption pursuit factors (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.08–0.83) were associated with DS consumption, whereas only the health pursuit factor had a significant association (OR = 5.37, 95% CI: 2.08–13.88) within the ‘passive pursuit’ group. However, total dietary score and DSs consumption did not show a relationship. Conclusions By understanding the consumption characteristics of DSs according to FRL, this can serve as basic data necessary for promoting health through the utilization of DSs and healthy behaviors.

Background Disease control in chronic diseases is an overarching concept that reflects the degree to which the goals of therapy are met. However, to date, there is no consensus on the definition of disease control in chronic cough. This study aimed to provide a conceptual exploration of patient-reported cough control in chronic cough. Methods This research is comprised of two subanalyses. First, patients with chronic cough receiving care at referral clinics were evaluated. Correlation analyses were performed between patient-reported cough control (a 5-point Likert scale), cough-specific patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and generic health PRO scores. Second, a survey was conducted among patients with refractory chronic cough and physicians to identify factors pertinent to cough control. Results The analysis of 341 patients (mean age: 55.5±15.1 years; female: 66.6%) revealed that cough control rating was moderately correlated with cough severity visual analogue scale and Leicester Cough Questionnaire scores, while demonstrating weaker correlations with cough-associated throat symptoms, cough-related complications or general health-related quality of life (QoL). In the survey of patients and physicians, both groups considered certain factors, such as cough frequency, severity and impact on QoL, to be relevant to the concept of cough control. However, patients rated “need for cough rescue drug” notably higher than physicians. Conclusion Patient-reported cough control was associated with cough severity or impact on QoL; however, cough control may not be fully captured by conventional cough PRO measurement tools. Further studies are warranted to define the consensus and tools to measure disease control in chronic cough.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of Boschniakia rossica polysaccharides （BRPS） on the activation of inflammasome and pyroptosis of J774A.1 macrophages induced by lipopolysaccharide （LPS） and adenosine triphosphate （ATP）. Methods: The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 （NLRP3） inflammasome model was established by stimulating J774A.1 macrophages with LPS and ATP. Cell viability was detected using the cell counting kit-8, the release of lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） was tested with the microplate method, the cellular level of NLRP3 and cell membrane damage were detected using the immunofluorescence staining method, and the secretion of interleukin-1β （IL-1β） was measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The protein expressions of NLRP3, caspase-1, apoptosis associated speck-like protein containing caspase recruitment domains （ASC）, IL-1β, gasdermin D （GSDMD）, as well as the nuclear factors-κB （NF-κB） and mitogen activated protein kinase （MAPK） was determined with the western blotting method. Results: BRPS could increase the cell viability, reduce the release of LDH in the culture medium, alleviate the membrane damage of macrophages, down-regulate the protein expression of NLRP3, up-regulate the level of caspase-1 precursor, and down-regulate the levels of IL-1β and GSDMD N-terminal active fragment in the model group. In addition, BRPS suppressed the nuclear translocation and phosphorylation of NF-κB, as well as the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase, c-Jun amino terminal kinase, and p38 MAPK. Conclusion: BRPS inhibit LPS/ATP-induced activation of macrophage inflammasome and pyroptosis in mouse J774A.1 cells through regulating the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways.

Abstract We analyzed the changes in various motor function scores over a four-year period in patients with non-ambulatory spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) during Nusinersen treatment. Patients underwent Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) or Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded (HFMSE) before treatment, and approximately every 4 months thereafter. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Infant Test of Neuromuscular Disorders (CHOP INTEND) or Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia – Adult Test of Neuromuscular Disorders (CHOP ATEND), Revised Upper Limb Module (RULM), and Motor Function Measure (MFM) were performed based on baseline functional status. Narrative interviews were conducted to explore post-treatment physical improvement regarding activities of daily living (ADLs) and fatigue after ADLs. Based on HFMSE results, 9 patients achieved minimum clinically important differences. Average rates of change (slopes) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals for all assessment tools were in a positive direction. CHOP-INTEND showed the most prominent improvement in children and adolescents followed by HFMSE. Improvements in CHOP-ATEND were most noticeable in adults. Improvements were accompanied by changes in ADLs as observed in the narrative interviews. It is necessary to consider various functional aspects to determine the effectiveness of Nusinersen therapy. The objective assessment of the therapeutic effect of Nusinersen in non-ambulatory SMA requires consideration of functional aspects and the related ADLs.

BackgroundWith a growing global population affected by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the traditional Chinese herbal formula Houpo Mahuang Decoction (HPMHD) has been used for centuries to address respiratory ailments. While studies have demonstrated the therapeutic benefits of HPMHD in COPD, the effective active ingredients, potential targets, and molecular mechanisms underlying its effectiveness remained unclear.MethodsThe mechanisms of action of certain HPMHD components, targets, and pathways for the treatment of COPD were predicted using a network pharmacology method. We induced a COPD mouse model using porcine pancreatic elastase and evaluated the pathological changes and healing processes through HE and Masson staining. Immunofluorescence was used to assess the levels of IL-6 and TNF-ɑ. RNA-Seq analysis was conducted to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the lungs of normal, control, and treated mice, revealing the biological pathways enriched by HPMHD in COPD treatment. Finally, the expression of DEGs was verified using Western blotting and RT-qPCR.ResultsHPMHD effectively alleviated pathological symptoms and improved COPD in mice by modulating the IL-17 signaling pathway. Treatment with HPMHD improved lung morphology and structure, reduced inflammatory cell infiltration, and inhibited IL-6 and TNF-ɑ levels. Network pharmacology and transcriptomics further revealed the mechanism, indicating that the IL-17 signaling pathway might been instrumental in the inhibitory effect of HPMHD on mouse model of COPD. Subsequent experiments, including protein blotting and RT-qPCR analysis, confirmed the activation of the IL-17 signaling pathway by HPMHD in the COPD mouse model, further supporting the initial findings.ConclusionHPMHD was shown to alleviate COPD and reduce lung inflammation in mice, potentially through the activation of the IL-17 signaling pathway. This study provides a novel direction for the development of COPD drugs.

Abstract Background Glaucoma is a leading cause of worldwide irreversible blindness. Considerable uncertainty remains regarding the association between a variety of phenotypes and the genetic risk of glaucoma, as well as the impact they exert on the glaucoma development. Methods We investigated the associations of genetic liability for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) with a wide range of potential risk factors and to assess its impact on the risk of incident glaucoma. The phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) approach was applied to determine the association of POAG polygenic risk score (PRS) with a wide range of phenotypes in 377, 852 participants from the UK Biobank study and 43,623 participants from the Penn Medicine Biobank study, all of European ancestry. Participants were stratified into four risk tiers: low, intermediate, high, and very high-risk. Cox proportional hazard models assessed the relationship of POAG PRS and ocular factors with new glaucoma events. Results In both discovery and replication set in the PheWAS, a higher genetic predisposition to POAG was specifically correlated with ocular disease phenotypes. The POAG PRS exhibited correlations with low corneal hysteresis, refractive error, and ocular hypertension, demonstrating a strong association with the onset of glaucoma. Individuals carrying a high genetic burden exhibited a 9.20-fold, 11.88-fold, and 28.85-fold increase in glaucoma incidence when associated with low corneal hysteresis, high myopia, and elevated intraocular pressure, respectively. Conclusion Genetic susceptibility to POAG primarily influences ocular conditions, with limited systemic associations. Notably, the baseline polygenic risk for POAG robustly associates with new glaucoma events, revealing a large combined effect of genetic and ocular risk factors on glaucoma incidents.

Abstract All-solid-state batteries using Si as the anode have shown promising performance without continual solid-electrolyte interface (SEI) growth. However, the first cycle irreversible capacity loss yields low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of Si, limiting the energy density. To address this, we adopt a prelithiation strategy to increase ICE and conductivity of all-solid-state Si cells. A significant increase in ICE is observed for Li1Si anode paired with a lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathode. Additionally, a comparison with lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NCM) reveals that performance improvements with Si prelithiation is only applicable for full cells dominated by high anode irreversibility. With this prelithiation strategy, 15% improvement in capacity retention is achieved after 1000 cycles compared to a pure Si. With Li1Si, a high areal capacity of up to 10 mAh cm–2 is attained using a dry-processed LCO cathode film, suggesting that the prelithiation method may be suitable for high-loading next-generation all-solid-state batteries.

Introduction Reducing neonatal deaths in premature infants in low- and middle-income countries is key to reducing global neonatal mortality. International neonatal networks, along with patient registries of premature infants, have contributed to improving the quality of neonatal care; however, the involvement of low-to-middle-income countries was limited. This project aims to form an international collaboration among neonatal networks in Asia (AsianNeo), including low-, middle- and high-income countries (or regions). Specifically, it aims to determine outcomes in sick newborn infants, especially very low birth weight (VLBW) infants or very preterm infants, with a view to improving the quality of care for such infants.Methods and analysis Currently, AsianNeo comprises nine neonatal networks from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. AsianNeo will undertake the following four studies: (1) institutional questionnaire surveys investigating neonatal intensive care unit resources and the clinical management of sick newborn infants, with a focus on VLBW infants (nine countries/regions); (2) a retrospective cohort study to describe and compare the outcomes of VLBW infants among Asian countries and regions (four countries/regions); (3) a prospective cohort study to develop the AsianNeo registry of VLBW infants (six countries/regions); and (4) implementation and evaluation of educational and quality improvement projects in AsianNeo countries and regions (nine countries/regions).Ethics and dissemination The study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Board of the National Center for Child Health and Development, Tokyo, Japan (reference number 2020–244, 2022–156). The study findings will be disseminated through educational programmes, quality improvement activities, conference presentations and medical journal publications.

Regular exercise as part of one’s lifestyle is well-recognized for its beneficial effect on several diseases such as cardiovascular disease and obesity; however, many questions remain unanswered regarding the effects of exercise on the gut environment. This study aimed to investigate the impact of long-term endurance exercise on modulating inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Fifteen-week-old male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were subjected to six months of endurance treadmill training, while age-matched controls remained sedentary. Results showed that IL-6 mRNA levels in colon tissues were significantly higher in the exercise group compared to the sedentary group. Exercise activated a significant ER stress-induced survival pathway by increasing BiP and phosphorylation of eIF2α (p-eIF2α) expressions in the liver and colon, while decreasing CHOP in the liver. Gene expressions of MUC2, Occludin, and Claudin-2 were increased in the colon of the exercise group, indicating enhanced intestinal integrity. Furthermore, the data showed a positive correlation between microbiota α-diversity and BiP (r = 0.464~0.677, p < 0.05). Populations of Desulfovibrio C21 c20 were significantly greater in the exercise group than the sedentary group. Additionally, predicted functions of the gut microbial community in terms of enzymes and pathways supported the enhancement of fatty-acid-related processes by exercise. These findings suggest that prolonged endurance exercise can affect the colon environment, which is likely related to changes in inflammation, ER stress, mucin layers and tight junctions, associated with modifications in the gut microbiome.

In the present work, catalytic cracking of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) dissolved in gasoil was investigated with a laboratory scale fluid bed reactor using commercial zeolite Y as catalysts for gasoline fuel production and waste plastics recycling. The liquid products chiefly consist of paraffins, isoparafins, olefins, naphthenes, and aromatics compounds. At a conversion of 75%, within gasoline pool (C5-C12), C5 and C6 were the principal components, and they accounted for approximately 25-30wt%, dependent of the catalyst applied. It is noted that hexane yield dominated around 50% of the total paraffins. The hydrothermal deactivated treatment (HDT) catalysts exhibit higher selectivity for i-C5 in the isoparafins, but it shows lower selectivity for aromatic compounds in comparison with that obtained using equilibrium catalysts (ECAT) catalyst under the same condition, resulting from their different acidity density and strength. Most aromatic compounds are in the range of C6-C10 with a benzene content less than 0.25wt%. The hydrocarbon composition of gasoline obtained from this work satisfied the current regulatory requirement of the commercial gasoline fuel. This work confirmed that simultaneous production of gasoline fuel and recycling of waste plastics by mixing a proper amount, i.e., 2.5 wt%, of LDPE with gasoil as feedstocks using the existed FCC technology is a highly practical route.

In this investigation, an ultrasound-assisted synthesis method was applied to synthesize the highly dispersed 12-molybdophosphoric acid on SBA-15 catalysts. Three SBA-15-supported catalysts were obtained with varying heteropolyacid content from 10 to 20 and 30wt%. The heteropolyacid exhibited high dispersion on SBA-15, with a particle size smaller than 4 nm, as confirmed by XRD analysis and TEM observation. All catalysts possessed both Lewis (L) and Brønsted (B) acid sites, and the number of acid sites showed an almost linear increase with the heteropolyacid content. In the oxidative removal of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiopene (4,6-DMDBT) from a model diesel, these catalysts demonstrated high catalytic activity. The 4,6-DMDBT conversion was proportional to the surface acidity, reaching the highest conversion of 98.7% on the catalyst with 30wt% heteropolyacid after a 40 min reaction at 70°C. It was proposed that the 4,6-DMDBT molecule preferentially adsorbed on the L acid sites by donating its unshared electrons in sulphur atom to the L acid sites of the catalyst via the surface acid-base reaction pathway, followed by oxidation reaction with H2O2 oxidant. The resulting polar sulfone (4,6-DMDBTO2) was immediately extracted by the polar extracting agent (acetonitrile) and separated from the oil phase. This work has proven that adsorption, oxidation and separation of 4,6-DMDBT in a model diesel fuel can be simultaneously realized in one operation unit for ultralow sulphur diesel production.

Titanite (CaTiSiO5) nanomaterials were synthesized by two hydrothermal methods and then calcined at 550 and 1000 °C, respectively. Their textural properties, crystalline structures, morphological features, and optical properties were characterized using N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (TEM-EDS), thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The samples calcined at 550 °C mainly consisted of anatase TiO2 with some CaCO3 and amorphous SiO2, which converted into CaTiSiO5 with a small amount of CaSiO3 at 1000 °C. The band gap energy (Eg) was lower because of the CaTiSiO5 formation at higher calcination temperature. The CaTiSiO5 photoactivity was evaluated in water splitting under UV light irradiation for H2 production. The highest H2 production rate was obtained with the nanomaterials prepared by the Method II calcined at 1000 ºC. When formic acid was used as sacrificial agent, the hydrogen generation rate remarkably increased by 3 - 5 times (160 µmol·g-1·h-1). However, in the presence of methanol, the hydrogen generation rate was not significantly increased. Clearly, the acidic reaction media promoted the reduction of protons on the surface of the catalysts by trapping the excited electrons in the CaTiSiO5 conduction band, favouring the hydrogen production.

This study aims to accurately classify the airways in the human respiratory system, which are characterized by diverse pattern forming a complex tree-like structure. Although recent advances in deep learning show promise for automatic airway segmentation, further research is needed to make it practical for determining a patient’s airway status for tailored treatment. To enhance diagnostics and treatments, it’s crucial to delve into the study of airway generation. This exploration helps in understanding specific structures and pinpointing issues like airway narrowing and lung compliance. Current methods, such as template-matching and machine learning based methods that interpret this as classification problem, have limitations in capturing the complexity of higher-generation airways. To overcome these challenges, our study proposes a novel approach. The Prim algorithm initially establishes a minimum spanning tree from the centerline to create an accurate tree structure that reflects airway connections. A new secondary branch is formed when a main branch with an outdegree of 1 is detected, ensuring precise airway generation labeling. To mitigate false branch generation, the study proposes an approach that increases the cost of trunk lines connected to a centerline with an outdegree of 1. Additionally, a method for pruning trees based on subtree length is proposed to effectively handle segmentation results in deep learning. This method prevents the generation of false branches by removing vertices with shorter subtree airway lengths than their siblings. The approach successfully addresses the common issue of false branch generation, providing reliable labeling of airway generation in higher-generation sections. In conclusion, the technique we propose offers substantial benefits for patient health monitoring, disease prediction, and prevention. It achieves this by providing precise and dependable identification of airway generations within the intricate anatomy of the respiratory system.

Background: Psychological stress can cause various mental and physical health problems. The previous results on stress and oral health are inconsistent, possibly because of the narrow stress measurements. We aimed to examine the association between a broader range of stressful life events and oral health among workers. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed anonymous individual data from a national survey in Japan. Data on stressful life events, oral health problems which are one or more of tooth pain, gum swelling/bleeding, and difficulty chewing, and covariates were obtained using a self-reported questionnaire. Covariates used included gender, age group, and disease under treatment. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between stressful life events and oral health problems. We then estimated the causal treatment effects of stress using the augmented inverse-probability weighting (AIPW) method. Results: Among the 274,881 subjects, 152,850 men (55.6%) and 122,031 women (44.4%) with a mean age of 47.0 (standard deviation, 14.4) years, 4.0% reported oral health problems, with a prevalence of 2.1% among those without any stress. The prevalence increased with stress score, reaching 15.4% for those with the maximum stress score. The adjusted odds ratio of this group compared to those without any stress was 9.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 8.2–10.3). The estimated prevalence of oral health problems by the AIPW analysis was 2.2% (95% CI, 2.1–2.3%) for those without any stress and 14.4% (95% CI, 12.1–16.7%) for those with the maximum stress scores. Conclusion: There was a clear dose-response association between stressful life events and oral health problems.

As social media continues to gain traction in the food industry, this study explored how cooking and dining-out behaviors and social media use differ depending on the foodie tendencies of consumers, particularly Korean Millennial and Gen Z consumers. Additionally, this study considered the effect of foodie tendencies on active social media usage. Based on the Foodie Index, two groups were identified: high and low. The high group scored higher than the low group on foodie knowledge and spending, food interest, and time commitment. Comparison of the food, cooking, and dining-out behaviors of both groups revealed a significantly greater frequency of cooking and a higher proportion of using their own ingredients, even when dining alone, in the high group. Analysis of social media use characteristics also demonstrated significantly higher scores for the high group than the low group in terms of the degree of use, average daily usage time, checking frequency, and use of social media recommendations when cooking and purchasing food. Furthermore, foodie inclination significantly influenced active usage behavior, as users shared informative content and frequently posted articles and photos. This study found that foodies play a leading role in producing food-related information by actively using and sharing social media. Considering this ripple effect, consumers’ foodie tendencies can be used as an important measure in food marketing-related research.

Background/Objectives: Isatidis Folium (IF) has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments, and recent research highlights its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and detoxifying properties. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of a hydroethanolic extract of IF (EIF) on inflammasomes and colitis. Methods: Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model C57BL/6 mice were treated with DSS, mesalamine, or EIF (200 mg/kg). Parameters such as daily disease activity index (DAI), spleen weight, colon length, and histopathology were evaluated. Intestinal fibrosis, mucin, and tight junction proteins were assessed using Masson’s trichrome, periodic acid–Schiff, and immunohistochemistry staining. RAW264.7 and J774a.1 macrophages were treated with EIF and lipopolysaccharide, with cell viability assessed via the cell counting kit-8 assay, nitric oxide (NO) production with Griess reagent, and cytokine levels with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. NF-κB inhibition was analyzed using the luciferase assay, and phytochemical analysis was performed using UPLC-MS/MS. Results: EIF mitigated weight loss, reduced DAI scores, prevented colon shortening, and attenuated mucosal damage, fibrosis, and goblet cell loss while enhancing the tight junction protein occludin. The anti-inflammatory effects of EIF in RAW264.7 cells included reduced NO production, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and NF-κB activity, along with inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome responses in J774a.1 cells. The key constituents identified were tryptanthrin, indigo, and indirubin. Conclusions: Animal studies demonstrated the efficacy of EIF in alleviating colitis, suggesting its potential for treating inflammatory diseases.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) occurs as an acute onset condition, and patients present with diffuse alveolar damage, refractory hypoxemia, and non-cardiac pulmonary edema. ARDS progresses through an initial exudative phase, an inflammatory phase, and a final fibrotic phase. Pirfenidone, a powerful anti-fibrotic agent, is known as an agent that inhibits the progression of fibrosis in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. In this study, we studied the treatment efficiency of pirfenidone on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and bleomycin-induced ARDS using rats. The ARDS rat model was created by the intratracheal administration of 3 mg/kg LPS of and 3 mg/kg of bleomycin dissolved in 0.2 mL of normal saline. The pirfenidone treatment group was administered 100 or 200 mg/kg of pirfenidone dissolved in 0.5 mL distilled water orally 10 times every 2 days for 20 days. The administration of LPS and bleomycin intratracheally increased lung injury scores and significantly produced pro-inflammatory cytokines. ARDS induction increased the expressions of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1/Smad-2 signaling factors. Additionally, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 imbalance occurred, resulting in enhanced fibrosis-related factors. Treatment with pirfenidone strongly suppressed the expressions of TGF-β1/Smad-2 signaling factors and improved the imbalance of MMP-9/TIMP-1 compared to the untreated group. These effects led to a decrease in fibrosis factors and pro-inflammatory cytokines, promoting the recovery of damaged lung tissue. These results of this study showed that pirfenidone administration suppressed inflammation and fibrosis in the ARDS animal model. Therefore, pirfenidone can be considered a new early treatment for ARDS.

Prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), an invasive annual plant, poses a significant threat to the agricultural systems of many countries, including Korea. In 2020, leaf blight symptoms were observed in the prickly lettuce populations of various farms across Korea. Detailed morphological and molecular sequence analyses revealed that the disease was caused by the fungus, Curvularia intermedia. A pathogenicity test confirmed that the fungus can cause the same symptoms in healthy prickly lettuce, thereby fulfilling Koch’s postulates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of C. intermedia causing leaf blight on L. serriola in Korea, suggesting its potential as a biocontrol agent for this weed. However, further investigations are necessary to determine its ecological impact to prevent any nontarget effects.

Abstract Background Butane is an aliphatic hydrocarbon used in various commercial products. While numerous reports of sudden cardiac-related deaths from butane inhalation have been described, butane-associated acute encephalopathy has rarely been reported. Case presentation A 38-year-old man presented with cognitive dysfunction after butane gas inhalation. Neuropsychological test results showed impairments in verbal and visual memory, and frontal executive function. Diffusion weighted MRI revealed symmetric high-signal changes in the bilateral hippocampus and globus pallidus. FDG-PET demonstrated decreased glucose metabolism in the bilateral precuneus and occipital areas and the left temporal region. At the 8-month follow-up, he showed still significant deficits in memory and frontal functions. Diffuse cortical atrophy with white matter hyperintensities and extensive glucose hypometabolism were detected on follow-up MRI and FDG-PET, respectively. Brain autopsy demonstrated necrosis and cavitary lesions in the globus pallidus. Conclusions Only a few cases of butane encephalopathy have been reported to date. Brain lesions associated with butane encephalopathy include lesions in the bilateral thalamus, insula, putamen, and cerebellum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on bilateral hippocampal and globus pallidal involvement in acute butane encephalopathy. The pathophysiology of central nervous system complications induced by butane intoxication is not yet fully understood. However, the direct toxic effects of butane or anoxic injury secondary to cardiac arrest or respiratory depression have been suggested as possible mechanisms of edematous changes in the brain after butane intoxication.

Background: In previous studies, several asthma phenotypes were identified using clinical and demographic parameters. Transcriptional phenotypes were mainly identified using sputum and bronchial cells. Objective: We aimed to investigate asthma phenotypes via clustering analysis using clinical variables and compare the transcription levels among clusters using gene expression profiling of the blood. Methods: Clustering analysis was performed using 6 parameters: age of asthma onset, body mass index, pack-years of smoking, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FEV1/forced vital capacity, and blood eosinophil counts. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from whole blood samples and RNA was extracted from selected PBMCs. Transcriptional profiles were generated (Illumina NovaSeq 6000) and analyzed using the reference genome and gene annotation files (hg19.refGene.gft). Pathway enrichment analysis was conducted using GO, KEGG, and REACTOME databases. Results: In total, 355 patients with asthma were included in the analysis, of whom 72 (20.3%) had severe asthma. Clustering of the 6 parameters revealed 4 distinct subtypes. Cluster 1 (n = 63) had lower predicted FEV1 % and higher pack-years of smoking and neutrophils in sputum. Cluster 2 (n = 43) had a higher proportion and number of eosinophils in sputum and blood, and severe airflow limitation. Cluster 3 (n = 110) consisted of younger subjects with atopic features. Cluster 4 (n = 139) included features of late-onset mild asthma. Differentially expressed genes between clusters 1 and 2 were related to inflammatory responses and cell activation. Th17 cell differentiation and interferon gamma-mediated signaling pathways were related to neutrophilic inflammation in asthma. Conclusion: Four clinical clusters were differentiated based on clinical parameters and blood eosinophils in adult patients with asthma form the Cohort for Reality and Evolution of Adult Asthma in Korea (COREA) cohort. Gene expression profiling and molecular pathways are novel means of classifying asthma phenotypes.

Background. Imbalance of the gut microbiome and decrease in the number of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria often affect human health by altering intestinal and immune homeostasis. The use of probiotics has been shown to be an attractive method to modulate gut microbiota to prevent or treat intestinal dysbiosis. Likewise, this study aimed to determine whether the oral consumption of heat-treated Lactiplantibacillus plantarum nF1 (HLp-nF1) induces changes in the gut environment in healthy infants by measuring changes in fecal SCFAs. Methods. The study enrolled 43 infants aged under 2 months, with 30 infants in the HLp-nF1 group receiving HLp-nF1 orally (2.5 × 1010 cells/g/pack, daily dose of two packs) for 8 weeks. The fecal samples were collected and the questionnaires were administered at weeks 0 and 8. Results. ABSTRACTAntiangiogenic therapy is a recognized method for countering the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) and improving anti-tumor immunity. PB101 is a glycosylated decoy receptor that binds to VEGF-A and PlGF with high affinity, based on the VEGFR1 backbone. Here, we elucidated PB101-induced remodeling of tumor angiogenesis and immunity, which enhances anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint blockade. PB101 inhibited tumor growth by suppressing angiogenesis and enhancing CD8+ T cell infiltration into the tumors. PB101 induced robust reprogramming of antitumor immunity and activates intratumoral CD8+ T cells. Anti-tumor efficacy of PB101 is mostly dependent on CD8+ T cells and IFN-γ. PB101 reprograms tumor immunity in a manner distinct from that of the conventional VEGF decoy receptor, VEGF-trap. With its potent immune-modulating capability, PB101 synergizes with an anti-PD-L1, triggering strengthened antitumor immunity. Combining PB101 and anti-PD-L1 could establish durable protective immunity against tumor recurrence and metastasis. The findings of this study offer scientific rationales for further clinical development of PB101, particularly when used in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors, as a potential treatment for advanced cancers.

The gastrointestinal tract is where the majority of gut microbiota settles; therefore, the composition of the gut microbiota and the changes in metabolites, as well as their modulatory effects on the immune system, have a very important impact on the development of gastrointestinal diseases. The purpose of this article was to review the role of the gut microbiota in the host environment and immunometabolic system and to summarize the beneficial effects of botanical active ingredients on gastrointestinal cancer, so as to provide prospective insights for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. A literature search was performed on the PubMed database with the keywords “gastrointestinal cancer”, “gut microbiota”, “immunometabolism”, “SCFAs”, “bile acids”, “polyamines”, “tryptophan”, “bacteriocins”, “immune cells”, “energy metabolism”, “polyphenols”, “polysaccharides”, “alkaloids”, and “triterpenes”. The changes in the composition of the gut microbiota influenced gastrointestinal disorders, whereas their metabolites, such as SCFAs, bacteriocins, and botanical metabolites, could impede gastrointestinal cancers and polyamine-, tryptophan-, and bile acid-induced carcinogenic mechanisms. GPRCs, HDACs, FXRs, and AHRs were important receptor signals for the gut microbial metabolites in influencing the development of gastrointestinal cancer. Botanical active ingredients exerted positive effects on gastrointestinal cancer by influencing the composition of gut microbes and modulating immune metabolism. Gastrointestinal cancer could be ameliorated by altering the gut microbial environment, administering botanical active ingredients for treatment, and stimulating or blocking the immune metabolism signaling molecules. Despite extensive and growing research on the microbiota, it appeared to represent more of an indicator of the gut health status associated with adequate fiber intake than an autonomous causative factor in the prevention of gastrointestinal diseases. This study detailed the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal cancers and the botanical active ingredients used for their treatment in the hope of providing inspiration for research into simpler, safer, and more effective treatment pathways or therapeutic agents in the field.

To improve aquaculture practices and husbandry of a variety of gastropods, including small conch species, it is necessary to study the physiological and endocrinological responses of nocturnal conches to light exposure. In this study, we investigated the effect of the light environment on Tegula rustica by exposing it to contrasting light conditions and observing histological changes in the retina and oxidative stress according to photoperiod and light wavelength. We confirmed that the pigment layer was significantly thicker in the group irradiated with light for 24 h (LL), but that its thickness did not differ significantly with light wavelength. Additionally, light wavelength changes did not cause a significant change in H2O2 concentration until 5 days after the change in the light environment. However, a significantly higher H2O2 concentration was observed in the LL test group on the eighth day compared with the other experimental groups. And a significantly higher total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed in the LL group on the third day compared with the other experimental groups. Our results indicate that the light environment affects the reaction of conches and that continuous light has a stronger effect on the thickness of the pigment layer than the light wavelength. In addition, continuous light irradiation induces excessive ROS and causes oxidative stress. These results can also be provided as basic data for husbandry when aquaculturing gastropods.

The survival rate of children admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after birth is on the increase; hence, proper evaluation and care of their neurodevelopment has become an important issue. Neurodevelopmental assessments of individual domains regarding motor, language, cognition, and sensory perception are crucial in planning prompt interventions for neonates requiring immediate support and rehabilitation treatment. These assessments are essential for identifying areas of weakness and designing targeted interventions to improve future functional outcomes and the quality of lives for both the infants and their families. However, initial stratification of risk to select those who are in danger of neurodevelopmental disorders is also important in terms of cost-effectiveness. Efficient and robust functional evaluations to recognize early signs of developmental disorders will help NICU graduates receive interventions and enhance functional capabilities if needed. Several age-dependent, domain-specific neurodevelopmental assessment tools are available; therefore, this review summarizes the characteristics of these tools and aims to develop multidimensional, standardized, and regular follow-up plans for NICU graduates in Korea.

As one of the main applications of quantum cryptography, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a promising secure key transmission method. Compared with traditional communication methods, QKD protocols based on the basic principles of quantum mechanics have unconditional security in theory. In general, the preparation and transmission of quantum states during QKD require the encoding, transmission, and measurement of photons. In recent years, QKD has made great progress in theory and engineering applications, and has also promoted the deployment of QKD networks all over the world. This paper focuses on several recent works on hybrid continuous-discrete variable QKD protocols. Combined with the coding method of discrete variable QKD and the detection method of continuous variable QKD, the advantages and disadvantages of building a QKD channel in practice are analyzed. Given the current stage of hybrid continuous-discrete variable QKD, we summarized its potential research priorities and difficulties in the future.

BackgroundDe novo malignancies are major causes of death after organ transplantation because the recipients subsequently receive immunosuppressant drugs. When gastric cancer develops, the clinical course of the tumor may be particularly aggressive. However, there are few reliable studies of gastric cancer treatment after organ transplantation. This study examined the clinicopathological characteristics of gastric cancer patients after organ transplantation and evaluated treatment outcomes after gastrectomy.MethodsClinical data were collected from 54 patients who were diagnosed with gastric cancer after organ transplantation. Of these, 30 who underwent surgery for gastric cancer while on immunosuppressant medications were compared with a control group of 625 gastric cancer patients. To compensate for clinical differences between the two groups, 1:1 propensity-score matching was performed.ResultsAmong the 30 gastric cancer patients on immunosuppressants, kidney transplantation was the most common procedure (19/30, 63.3%) followed by bone marrow (6) and liver transplantation (4); among all 54 patients, 45 were on one or two immunosuppressants. Up-migration to an advanced pathological stage was more frequent in the transplant group. In multivariate analysis, transplantation was a significant risk factor for up-migration from the T, M, and final stages after surgery. When the 30 patients on immunosuppressants who underwent gastric cancer surgery were compared with the matched controls, the total incidence (30.0 vs 40.0%, P = 0.417) and the number of severe postoperative complications (16.7 vs 13.4%, P = 0.417) did not differ significantly between groups after propensity score matching. In terms of overall survival, the transplant group showed significantly worse prognosis in stages I, II, and IV (P < 0.001, P = 0.039 and 0.007, respectively).ConclusionRadical gastrectomy can be a safe oncological procedure for gastric cancer patients on immunosuppressants after transplantation. Considering their immunosuppressed condition and the possibility of underestimation of the stage of gastric cancer, early detection with endoscopic screening is needed to allow curative treatment.

Microplastics (MP) are harmful, causing stress in aquatic species and acting as carriers of hydrophobicity. In aquatic environments, benzo[α]pyrene (BaP) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that accumulates in the body and causes toxic reactions in living organisms. We investigated the effects of single and combined microbead (MB) and BaP environments on goldfish antioxidant response and apoptosis. For 120 h, goldfish were exposed to single (MB10, MB100, and BaP5) and combined (MB10+BaP5 and MB100+BaP5) environments of 10 and 100 beads/L of 0.2 µm polystyrene MB and 5 µg/L BaP. We measured MB and BaP bioaccumulation as well as plasma parameters including ALT, AST, and glucose. The level of oxidative stress was determined by evaluating lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in plasma, as well as antioxidant-related genes for superoxide dismutase and catalase (SOD and CAT) and caspase-3 (Casp3) mRNA expression in liver tissue. The TUNEL assay was used to examine SOD in situ hybridization and apoptosis in goldfish livers. Except for the control group, plasma LPO levels increased at the end of the exposure period in all experimental groups. TAC increased up to 24 h of exposure and then maintained a similar level until the trial ended. SOD, CAT, and Casp3 mRNA expression increased substantially up to 120 h as the exposure concentration and time increased. The TUNEL assay revealed more signals and apoptotic signals in the combined exposure environments as a consequence of SOD in situ hybridization than in single exposure environments. These results suggest that combined exposure to toxic substances causes oxidative stress in organisms, which leads to apoptosis.

Purpose: This analysis aimed to characterize the exposure–response relationship of bevacizumab in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and evaluate the efficacy of SB8, a bevacizumab biosimilar, and Avastin®, the reference bevacizumab sourced from the European Union (EU), based on the exposure reported in a comparative phase III efficacy and safety study (EudraCT, 2015-004026-34; NCT 02754882).Materials and methods: The overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) data from 224 patients with steady-state trough concentrations (Css,trough) were analyzed. A parametric time-to-event (TTE) model was developed using NONMEM®, and the effects of treatments (SB8 and bevacizumab-EU) and patient demographic and clinical covariates on OS and PFS were evaluated. Simulations of median OS and PFS by bevacizumab Css,trough were conducted, and concentrations required to achieve 50% and 90% of the maximum median TTE were computed.Results: A log-logistics model with Css,trough best described the OS and PFS data. Treatment was not a predictor of the hazard for OS or PFS. Simulations revealed steep exposure–response curves with a phase of rapid rise before saturating to a plateau. The median Css,trough values of SB8 and bevacizumab-EU reported from the clinical study were on the plateaus of the exposure–response curves. The concentrations required to achieve 50% and 90% of the maximum effect were 82.4 and 92.2 μg/mL, respectively, for OS and 79.7 and 89.1 μg/mL, respectively, for PFS.Conclusion: Simulations based on the constructed TTE models for OS and PFS have well described the exposure–response relationship of bevacizumab in advanced NSCLC. The analysis demonstrated comparable efficacy between SB8 and bevacizumab-EU in terms of OS and PFS based on their exposure levels.

Abstract Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two distinct diseases that are associated with chronic inflammation. They share common features in terms of their advanced stages and genetic factors. This study aimed to identify novel genes underlying both asthma and COPD using genome-wide association study (GWAS) to differentiate between the two diseases. We performed a GWAS of asthma and COPD in 7828 Koreans from three hospitals. In addition, we investigated genetic correlations. The UK Biobank dataset was used for the replication studies. We found that rs2961757, located near neuromedin U receptor 2 (NMUR2) on chromosome 5, was genome-wide significant ( $${\upbeta }_{\mathrm{Asthma}-\mathrm{COPD}}$$ β Asthma - COPD = 0.44, P-valueAsthma-COPD = 3.41 × 10−8), and significant results were replicated with the UK Biobank data ( $${\upbeta }_{\mathrm{Asthma}-\mathrm{COPD}}$$ β Asthma - COPD = 0.04, P-valueAsthma-COPD = 0.0431). A positive genetic correlation was observed between asthma and COPD (39.8% in the Korean dataset and 49.8% in the UK Biobank dataset). In this study, 40–45% of the genetic effects were common to asthma and COPD. Moreover, NMUR2 increases the risk of asthma development and suppresses COPD development. This indicates that NMUR2 allows for better differentiation of both diseases, which can facilitate tailored medical therapy.

Background and Objectives: Muscle atrophy occurs when protein degradation exceeds protein synthesis, resulting in imbalanced protein homeostasis, compromised muscle contraction, and a reduction in muscle mass. The incidence of muscle atrophy is increasingly recognized as a significant worldwide public health problem. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of whey peptide (WP) on muscle atrophy induced by dexamethasone (DEX) in mice. Materials and Methods: C57BL/6 mice were divided into six groups, each consisting of nine individuals. WPs were orally administered to C57BL/6 mice for 6 weeks. DEX was administered for 5–6 weeks to induce muscle atrophy (intraperitoneal injection, i.p.). Results: Microcomputer tomography (CT) analysis confirmed that WP significantly increased calf muscle volume and surface area in mice with DEX-induced muscle atrophy, as evidenced by tissue staining. Furthermore, it increased the area of muscle fibers and facilitated greater collagen deposition. Moreover, WP significantly decreased the levels of serum biomarkers associated with muscle damage, kidney function, and inflammatory cytokines. WP increased p-mTOR and p-p70S6K levels through the IGF-1/PI3K/Akt pathway, while concurrently decreasing protein catabolism via the FOXO pathway. Furthermore, the expression of proteins associated with myocyte differentiation increased noticeably. Conclusions: These results confirm that WP reduces muscle atrophy by regulating muscle protein homeostasis. Additionally, it is believed that it helps to relieve muscle atrophy by regulating the expression of myocyte differentiation factors. Therefore, we propose that WP plays a significant role in preventing and treating muscle wasting by functioning as a supplement to counteract muscle atrophy.

Natural and synthetic chalcones exhibit anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, and antitubercular activities. Isodorsmanin A (IDA), a chalcone, is a well-known constituent of the dried seeds of Psoralea corylifolia L. (PC). Although other constituents of PC have been widely investigated, there are no studies on the biological properties of IDA. In this study, we focused on the anti-inflammatory effects of IDA and evaluated its effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages. The results showed that IDA suppressed the production of inflammatory mediators (nitric oxide [NO] and prostaglandin E2 [PGE2]) and proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], interleukin-6 [IL-6], and interleukin-1β [IL-1β]) without cytotoxicity. In addition, it downregulated the mRNA levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) within the treatment concentrations. In our mechanistic studies, IDA inhibited the phosphorylation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and protected the nuclear factor of the kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in the B-cells’ inhibitor, alpha (IκB-α), from degradation, thus preventing the activation of the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells’ (NF-κB) transcription factor. Our results suggest that IDA is a promising compound for attenuating excessive inflammatory responses.

Abstract The shared pathophysiological features of the cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and glaucoma suggest an association between the two diseases. Using the prospective UK Biobank cohort, we examined the associations between glaucoma and incident CVD and assessed the extent to which a healthy lifestyle reduced the CVD risk in subjects with glaucoma, using a scoring system consisting of four factors: current smoking, obesity, regular physical activity, and a healthy diet. During a mean follow-up time of 8.9 years, 22,649 (4.9%) incident CVD cases were documented. Multivariable Cox regression analyses revealed that subjects with glaucoma were significantly more likely to exhibit incident CVD (hazard ratio [HR]:1.19, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03–1.37; p = 0.016) than controls. In the further subgroup analyses, glaucoma increased incident CVD risk both in the young (40–55 years) and the old (56–70 years) and in both sexes, with higher risk in the young (HR: 1.33, CI 1.02–1.74) and female subjects (HR: 1.32, CI 1.14–1.52). When we analyze the associations between glaucoma and incident CVD by lifestyle factors, the highest absolute risks were observed in individuals with both glaucoma and an unhealthy lifestyle (HR: 2.66, CI 2.22–3.19). In conclusion, glaucoma was an independent risk factor for incident CVD. A healthy lifestyle was associated with a substantially lower risk for CVD incidence among adults with glaucoma.

Rapid construction of ripple web (RW) is a new construction technology that can be applied to the prestressed concrete (PC) box girder bridge with corrugated steel webs (CSWs). In order to analyse the mechanical behaviour in the construction process when the RW method is applied, the main bridge of Zhao-Jun Yellow River Super Large Bridge was adapted as the engineering background, and a three-dimensional simulation finite element model was established. Thereafter, detailed mechanical analyses were carried out for CSWs, top concrete and bottom concrete, lining concrete, temporary support and other structures in the construction process when the RW method was used. The results reveal the excellent quality of the mechanical properties of the structure, thus indicating the structure’s safety and reliability. This study can provide a reference for similar research and have a positive impact on the further promotion of the RW method for application in the continuous girder bridge with CSWs.

Psychogenic dysphagia is a deglutition disorder characterized by a fear of swallowing, with no structural or functional causes. This report presents the case of a young male patient who had severe malnutrition due to psychogenic dysphagia and was provided visual biofeedback using fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). A healthy 25-year-old man presented to our clinic with a complaint of throat discomfort when swallowing that had started 6 months prior. As the symptoms worsened, he became fearful of food spreading to his lungs after swallowing and the development of respiratory difficulties. His food intake gradually decreased, resulting in a weight loss of 20 kg within 2 months. Evaluation of organic and other functional causes of dysphagia was performed, but no abnormalities were detected. The sensation of a lump in his throat, fear of swallowing, and anxiety were transformed into somatic symptoms. The patient was diagnosed with psychogenic dysphagia. After visual biofeedback by a physician who performed FEES, the patient resumed eating normally and increased his food intake. If routine tests do not reveal structural or functional causes of dysphagia, assessment of a psychogenic swallowing disorder should be considered. FEES can help in the diagnosis and management of psychogenic dysphagia.

The two main screening tests during pregnancy are those for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects (NTDs). In particular, for NTDs, measurement of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) levels early in the second trimester (15–18 weeks of gestation) has been considered the gold standard screening test for the past 4 decades. However, with remarkable technological advancements and the widespread use of ultrasound during those periods, mid-trimester ultrasonography has gradually replaced the role of measuring MSAFP levels as a screening method for NTDs. This change was initiated more about 10 years ago in some countries, which have issued national guidelines to use mid-trimester ultrasonography instead of measuring MSAFP levels as a prenatal screening method for NTDs. However, no significant changes have occurred in Korea, where second-trimester ultrasonography is routinely performed with high-quality equipment. We aimed to provide information regarding the importance of changing the screening method for NTDs from MSAFP measurement to ultrasonography, and to detail methods of implementing mid-trimester ultrasonography for screening purposes. We also share our experience of operating a prenatal diagnostic program for NTDs without using MSAFP for more than 15 years.

ABSTRACT: Skin color in chickens is an economically important trait that determines the first impression of a consumer toward a broiler and can ultimately affect consumer choice in the market. Therefore, identification of genomic regions associated with skin color is crucial for increasing the sales value of chickens. Although previous studies have attempted to reveal the genetic markers associated with the skin coloration in chickens, most were limited to investigations of candidate genes, such as melanin-related genes, and focused on case/control studies based on a single or small population. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 770 F2 intercrosses produced by an experimental population of 2 chicken breeds, namely Ogye and White Leghorns, with different skin colors. The GWAS demonstrated that the L* value among the 3 skin color traits is highly heritable, and the genomic regions located on 2 chromosomes (20 and Z) were detected to harbor SNPs significantly associated with the skin color trait, accounting for most of the total genetic variance. Particular genomic regions spanning a ∼2.94 Mb region on GGA Z and a ∼3.58 Mb region on GGA 20 were significantly associated with skin color traits, and in these regions, certain candidate genes, including MTAP, FEM1C, GNAS, and EDN3, were found. Our findings could help elucidate the genetic mechanisms underlying chicken skin pigmentation. Furthermore, the candidate genes can be used to provide a valuable breeding strategy for the selection of specific chicken breeds with ideal skin coloration.

Objectives It is crucial to establish the characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks at army training centers to develop preventive measures. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the COVID-19 transmission patterns and risk factors in a sequence of outbreaks at an army training center from June to August 2021. Methods This study included 1,324 trainees at an army training center where outbreaks occurred from June to August 2021. The outbreak was qualitatively analyzed according to the period, attack rate, demographic characteristics, vaccination history, and living areas. An aerodynamic experiment was performed to evaluate aerosol transmission in living areas. Results Three outbreaks occurred at the army training center from June to August 2021. The first, second, and third outbreaks lasted for 32, 17, and 24 days, and the attack rates were 12.8%, 18.1%, and 8.9%, respectively. Confirmed cases were distributed in all age groups. Recruits and the unvaccinated were at higher risk for COVID-19. The aerodynamic experiment verified the possibility of aerosol transmission within the same living area. Conclusion COVID-19 transmission at army training centers should be minimized through quarantine and post-admission testing during the latency period as part of integrated measures that include facility ventilation, vaccination, indoor mask-wearing, and social distancing.

To explore the influence of tailings particle size distribution on strength and damage characteristics of filling body, uniaxial compression, scanning electron microscopy, and digital image correlation (DIC) tests were carried out on the filling body composed of ultrafine tailings (median particle size D50=10.1 m), fine tailings (D50=37.1 m), and coarse tailings (D50=121.31 m), and the strength and microstructure characteristics were analyzed. Based on the cusp mutation theory, the damage identification index of the filling body was established using wavelet packet technology, and the damage characteristics of the filling body were quantitatively analyzed. The results reveal that the strength and elastic modulus of the filling body first increase and then decrease with the increase of D50, but the influence of tailings particle diameter on the strength and elastic modulus of the filling body is reduced with the increase of slurry concentration. Compared with the ultrafine and coarse tailings filling body, the coarse and fine particles of the fine tailings filling body are more closely combined, and its porosity is the lowest and microstructure compactness is the best. The energy change rate (ECR) mutation point is defined as the threshold of the backfill specimen damage mutation, which is used to distinguish the stable damage stage and the accelerated damage stage of the specimen, and the damage mutations of the ultrafine, fine, and coarse tailings filling body occur when their stresses reach 92.83%, 92.31%, and 72.93% of the corresponding peak stresses. With the increase of D50, the failure mode of the filling body changes from shear failure to tensile failure, with the ECR increasing from 20.65% to 28.25%, and the damage degree is gradually aggravated. The research results lay the foundation for improving the particle gradation of mine tailings and enhancing the strength of filling body.

Background Although the benefits of breastfeeding are broadly acknowledged with the efforts of the government and several medical societies, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding through 6 months is lower in Korea than in developed countries. Purpose This study aimed to investigate pediatricians’ perceptions of breastfeeding barriers and the current breastfeeding counseling environment and propose government policies to encourage breastfeeding in Korea. Methods Fourteen survey questions were developed during meetings of Korean Society of Breastfeeding Medicine experts. The Korean Pediatric Society emailed a structured questionnaire to domestic pediatricians registered as official members of the Korean Pediatric Society on May 4, 2021, and June 3, 2021. This study examined the survey responses received from 168 pediatricians. Results The 168 respondents included 62 professors, 53 paid doctors, and 53 private physicians. Breastfeeding was recommended by 146 Korean pediatricians (86.9%). However, only 99 responders (59%) currently provide breastfeeding counseling in hospitals. Most respondents stated providing less than 15 minutes of breastfeeding counseling time in the clinic. Moreover, 89.88% of the respondents responded that they would participate in breastfeeding counseling education if an appropriate breastfeeding counseling program was newly established. Conclusion This study showed that, although Korean pediatricians had a positive attitude toward breastfeeding, limited counseling was provided for parents. Along with policy support to improve the medical environment through the establishment of an appropriate breastfeeding counseling program, high-quality counseling and an increased breastfeeding rate are expected.

Objective To analyze the correlation between standardized language assessment batteries of toddlers and developmental language delays. Methods A total of 319 children with suspected language developmental delays were enrolled in this study retrospectively. They underwent the Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT) for vocabulary development assessment and at least one of two language assessment batteries: The Sequenced Language Scale for Infants (SELSI) or the Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale (PRES) for language development assessment. The correlation of the results for receptive and expressive language between the scales were analyzed. Results The participants were divided into two groups: SELSI and REVT (n=45) and PRES and REVT (n=273). When the children’s results were classified into groups (average, mild delay, and delay), receptive and expressive scores were significantly correlated with each other in both SELSI-REVT and PRES-REVT groups. In addition, the correlation of mean developmental age between tests are analyzed. In the SELSI-REVT group, there was weak correlation of mean developmental age between tests for receptive and expressive language. In the PRES-REVT group, there was a strong positive correlation of mean developmental age for receptive and expressive language in children aged >36 months. Attention deficits during the test was found to be the statistically significant factor affecting the differences between the tests. The odds ratios for receptive and expressive language were 2.60 (95% confidence interval,1.15–5.84) and 1.94 (95% confidence interval, 1.15–3.27), respectively. Conclusion This study examined the correlations and influencing factors between language development evaluation tools for toddlers. An integrated interpretation of comprehensive language and vocabulary evaluation tools may be possible in children older than 3 years of language developmental age.

The crime of human trafficking is an abnormal (involuntary, passive) phenomenon of population migration (disappearance, persecution); it has attracted great attention from the public and academic community because of its resultant social harm and far-reaching impacts on individuals and families. Constrained by the concealment, dispersion, variability, and complexity of the crime of human trafficking in China, the perspectives of earlier research topics were relatively clustered and limited. During the last 10 years, geographers have gradually achieved certain new understandings and progress through continuous exploration. From the perspective of the related sub-disciplines of geography, this study focuses on the main progress, existing issues, future trends, and crime governance paths to review studies on the crime of human trafficking in China. The results indicate the following: (1) Regarding the interdisciplinary situation: The crime of human trafficking is a social pain point of common concern among multiple disciplines. Geography has the advantage of being a latecomer and its integration with other disciplines will help understand the problem in depth and solve it systematically. Geographers will have a broad stage for future research in the field of human trafficking crimes. (2) Regarding the research objects: The earlier studies on the crime of child trafficking in China in the international context were actually subject studies of human trafficking in the Chinese criminal law context. The crime of human trafficking in China is unique compared to other countries and other types of crimes. (3) Regarding the research data: In the past, the data sources mainly comprised non-governmental organizations and individuals. The current data sources show the co-occurrence of non-governmental and official sources and the trend of the integration of offline and online availability. The integration and utilization of multi-source data will be the main path to future studies. (4) Regarding field investigation: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact and the upgrading of related family tracing means, field investigation has opened up new ways, and online investigations (online interviews, participatory observation in live broadcasting rooms, etc.) have become complementary or alternative channels of traditional field investigations and surveys. (5) Regarding patterns and trends: Based on the update and verification of available data, it is found that the stability of the spatiotemporal pattern of trafficking crimes and the dependence on the main routes in China, and cross-border and inter-provincial border areas, are worthy of attention. Future research trend will shift from being independent to comprehensive—from a quantitative study to a qualitative or mixed study; from case numbers to individuals, families, and their social networks; from the source area to the bridging of source, flow, and sink areas; and from a type of human trafficking to multi-type comparisons of missing persons. (6) Regarding measures and suggestions: Combined with the existing research knowledge and current crime trends, this study presents overall strategies and specific paths for dealing with the crime of human trafficking and assisting the abducted and their relatives.
