Background: The demand for fish and fish products is now higher than ever. However, several problems such as nutrient loading or excessive use of resources can be associated with the intensification of aquaculture systems. Integrated multitrophic aquaculture systems (IMTAs) refer to the co-culture of different species belonging to different trophic levels, and offer a sustainable approach to aquaculture development. In these systems, organic and inorganic extractive species will feed on other species waste or on uneaten feed nutrients, acting as bioremediators. Scope and approach: The extractive capacity that these organisms have to take up nutrients from the water also means they will accumulate chemicals that are often administered in intensive productions. The present review describes a vast number of substances that can be found in IMTAs, either intentionally administered or resulting from contamination, and subsequently accumulated in species reared afterwards in these systems. The presence of such chemicals in organisms produced in IMTAs raises several food safety and human health concerns, which need to be addressed. Key findings and conclusions: Although IMTAs still face many challenges in terms of large scale production, legislations are not yet ready to comprise co-cultivation of multiple species in proximity. Also, maximum residue limits already existent for fish must be set for other organisms also produced in IMTAs in order to protect consumer's health. An increase in extractive species consumption (e.g. seaweeds) has been noticed during the past few years, and as IMTAs gain importance as a sustainable production method, food safety issues must be tackled. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Introduction Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is routinely used in the prognostic evaluation of patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is a strong prognostic marker but have shown a bad correlation with exercise capacity. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between echocardiographic parameters and exercise capacity in HFrEF patients. Methods We retrospectively assessed all patients with HFrEF submitted to CPET and echocardiography between March and September of 2019. 73 patients were eligible for analysis. ANOVA test was used to compare Weber class groups regarding echocardiographic parameters. Multivariate linear regression with a stepwise approach was used to assess independent predictors of peak VO2 uptake. ROC curves were compared to assess the best parameter to discriminate a peak VO2 Results Mean age was 53.4±11.7 years with 72.6% being male. Mean LVEF was 29.2±7.7% and mean peak VO2 was 13.4±3.8 ml/kg/min. Between the Weber class groups, significant differences were found in left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) longitudinal strain (P Conclusion RV longitudinal strain and TRmax seem to be the best echocardiographic predictors of exercise intolerance in patients with HFrEF. Background Compared with the cardiac exercise stress test, more commonly used to assess the presence of ischemia, the cardiopulmonary exercise test has the advantage of providing expired gas analysis. According to current guidelines, cardiopulmonary exercise testing should be considered to stratify the risk of adverse events and to provide measures of survival improvement in heart failure populations. However, cardiac exercise stress test is more readily available and widespread than cardiopulmonary exercise testing. We aimed to compare prognostic information given by estimated pVO2 – which can be obtained from cardiac exercise stress test – and real measured pVO2 – which requires cardiopulmonary exercise test – in a heart failure population. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of 214 patients with HF underwent cardiac exercise stress test and accessed their 5 year survival. Non-urgent transplanted (UNOS Status 2) patients were censored alive on the date of the transplant. Duringthe cardiopulmonary exercise test, cardiac exercise stress test data simultaneously collected. Based on protocol stage achieved, estimated METs were used to calculate estimated pVO2 (pVO2 = estimated METs x 3.5). Estimated and real pVO2 were correlated using Pearson correlation and the age-adjusted prognostic power of each was determined using Cox proportional hazardsanalysis. Results 164 patients were male (77%) and the mean age of the population was 56±10 years. 78 (36%) patients had an ischemic etiology. Within 5 years from testing, 46 patients died (21.5%) and 55 patients (26%) were transplanted. Naughton modified (n=165) was the most commonly used protocol, followed by Naughton (n=39) and Bruce (n=10). Estimated pVO2 and measured pVO2 correlated significantly (R=0.66, p Conclusions Estimated pVO2 correlated with measured pVO2 and strongly predicted prognosis in this heart failure population. Introduction Catheter ablation has become the first-line treatment for symptomatic patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Several approaches of substrate ablation have been used for persistent and long-standing persistent AF and the best protocol procedure is yet to be established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of patients submitted to catheter ablation of persistent and long-standing persistent AF adding extra-pulmonary substrate approaches to pulmonary vein isolation. Methods We retrospectively studied 67 consecutive patients referred for the first procedure of catheter ablation of persistent or long-standing persistent AF from May 2016 to October 2018. The first 27 patients were subjected to pulmonary vein isolation and complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAE) ablation (group 1) and the last 40 patients were subjected to a tailored approach guided by voltage map areas and CFAE (group 2). Patient characteristics, procedure details and follow-up were assessed, and predictors of recurrence were determined. Results Mean age was 59±11 years with 58% being male. During a mean follow-up of 16±6 months 27% of the patients showed AF recurrence. There were no differences in baseline characteristics of group 1 and 2. A higher recurrence rate was found in group 1 by comparison with group 2 (40.7% vs 17.5%, Log Rank X2 = 5.076, P=0.024) (Figure 1). Also, recurrence was associated with a longer AF duration, an increased baseline Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP), an increased left atrium (LA) volume, the presence of hyperthyroidism, the absence of sinus rhythm after procedure, the inducibility of AF post-ablation and the absence of an antiarrhythmic drug at hospital discharge. After adjustment for other confounders, the patient group (HR 5.16 [1.23–21.71] P=0.025), a long-standing AF (HR 9.09 [1.41–58.82] P=0.020), the BNP value at admission (HR 1.03 [1.01–1.05] P=0.033) and the LA volume index (HR 1.13 [1.02–1.25] P=0.017) were the only independent predictors of recurrence. Conclusion Ablation of persistent and long-standing persistent AF is feasible with good results when a substrate approach is added to pulmonary vein isolation. A tailored approach seems to be more efficient, showing best outcomes in mid-term follow-up. A long-standing AF, higher BNP value and the LA enlargement are important predictors of recurrence and should be used to better select patients and to manage follow-up. Introduction Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide and the pandemic caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has forced profound changes in the care of patients with cardiac conditions. In Portugal, an increase in mortality beyond that attributed solely to COVID-19 was observed. We aimed to realize how COVID-19 has changed the activity of our Interventional Cardiology Unit. Methods We retrospectively assessed all patients submitted to any interventional procedure in 2019 and 2020 in our hospital. A total of 7621 patients and 9163 procedures were evaluated. The mean weekly numbers of coronarography, angioplasty, right heart catheterization and structural heart intervention during 2019 were assessed and were compared with the first COVID-19 wave (comprising March and April 2020) and the second COVID-19 wave (including the time period from October to end of December 2020). Results Mean age was 65.2±16.6 years with 72% being male. In the first COVID-19 wave there was a significant reduction in the mean weekly numbers of all procedures, with a 64% decline in coronarographies (30.9±29.3 vs 87.2±12.9, P Conclusions In our Interventional Cardiology Unit, COVID-19 led to a significant reduction of procedures in the first and second pandemic waves. The effect on the increase in morbidity and mortality has yet to be determined. Key Clinical Message This case illustrates the importance and potential of having TCD monitoring in intensive care. This easy‐to‐use, safe, low‐cost, and bedside tool allows evaluation of the safety and feasibility of an alternative treatment of VSP in SCH and demonstrates the potential to avoid the use of angiography, a high cost, invasive procedure.

Concerns about antibiotic use led to stricter legislations and overall better practices in aquaculture production. However, depletion time periods in tissues vary greatly with different antimicrobials, fish species, or experimental setup. In the present work, five drugs (sulfadiazine (SDZ), trimethoprim (TRI), flumequine (FLU), oxolinic acid (OXO), and oxytetracycline (OTC)) were incorporated into medicated feed, and their retention in European seabass muscle tissues assessed. Juveniles were placed in 300 L tanks at 18 °C and were manually fed with medicated feeds for a 7 day period (two concentrations per antimicrobial, ranging from 6 to 220 mg kg−1 , which were based on previous studies on the occurrence of these antimicrobials). Residues were analyzed through a multi-class quantification method (UHPLC-MS/MS). Data on residues concentration through time followed a one-compartment model, with TRI concentrations above the established Maximum Residue Level (MRL) throughout the experiment. Similarly, OTC concentrations at the highest dose were also above 100 μg kg−1 up to 14 days after the medication period. Results obtained for TRI may indicate the presence of a dose dependency for this antimicrobial. FLU concentrations in muscle samples were the lowest through time (Cday7 of 279.70 and 386.63 μg kg−1 , for prophylactic and therapeutic treatments, respectively). Half-life values of 14.37, 10.87, 5.36, 7.20, and 27.22 h (prophylactic treatment), and 20.95, 8.41, 5.61, 11.22, and 17.99 h (therapeutic treatment), were determined for SDZ, TRI, FLU, OXO, and OTC, respectively. Withdrawal times of 0, 2, and 5 days were determined for FLU, OXO, and SDZ, but sampling times for OTC and TRI should be longer, since antimicrobial concentrations were above the MRL 14 days after the end of the feeding period with medicated feed. Therefore, special attention should be given since they are the most used antibiotics in aquaculture and European seabass plays a major part in human nutrition in the Mediterranean region. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Understanding how marine fish early-life history is affected in the long-term by environmental and oceanographic factors is fundamental given its importance to population dynamics and connectivity. This work aimed at determining the influence of these processes on the interannual variability in hatch day and early-life growth patterns of European seabass, over a seven-year period (2011-2017) in the Atlantic Iberian coast. To accomplish this, otolith microstructure analysis was used to determine seabass hatch day and to develop early-growth correlations. In most years, hatching occurred from February to April, with two exceptions: in 2012, hatching started in early-January, and in 2016 an exceptionally long hatching period was registered. Using generalized additive models (GAM), we observed that sea surface temperature (SST), the North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAOi) and Chlorophyll-a (Chla) were the main drivers behind the inter-annual variability in seabass hatch day. Analysis of correlations between growth increments allowed assessing important periods of seabass growth and how future growth is affected. Since seawater temperature is among the main drivers for seabass recruitment and growth, its life cycle may be hampered due to ocean warming and an increasingly unstable climate, with consequences for the natural marine stocks and their harvest. We consider the possibility of an oscillating scalar field accounting for dark matter and dynamically controlling the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry through a Higgs-portal coupling. This requires a late decay of the inflaton field, such that thermal effects do not restore the electroweak symmetry after reheating, and so inflation is followed by an inflaton matter-dominated epoch. During inflation, the dark scalar field acquires a large expectation value due to a negative non-minimal coupling to curvature, thus stabilizing the Higgs field by holding it at the origin. After inflation, the dark scalar oscillates in a quartic potential, behaving as dark radiation, and only when its amplitude drops below a critical value does the Higgs field acquire a non-zero vacuum expectation value. The dark scalar then becomes massive and starts behaving as cold dark matter until the present day. We further show that consistent scenarios require dark scalar masses in the few GeV range, which may be probed with future collider experiments., 12 pages, 5 figures. We investigated the presence of 66 human and veterinary pharmaceuticals from seven therapeutic groups in surface waters of the Tejo estuary. Collection sites covered the entire estuary and included areas near main river inflows and wastewater treatment outfalls, traversing urban, agriculture, aquaculture, and nature reserve areas. Detection of pharmaceuticals was performed via UHPLC-TOF-MS. Pharmaceuticals were found in all sites (32 different compounds in total). Antibiotics, β-blockers, antihypertensives and anti-inflammatories were the most frequently detected (>90%), with variation in concentrations reflecting the multifaceted nature of estuarine surroundings (accumulated site contamination between 15 and 351 ng L−1). Higher concentrations of antidepressant Sertraline (304 ng L−1), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Diclofenac (51.8 ng L−1), lipid regulator Gemfibrozil (77.0 ng L−1), antihypertensive Ibersartan (161.9 ng L−1) or antibiotic Doxycycline (128.0 ng L−1), among others, though localized may potentially impact key estuarine functions or services. Ultimately, results provide a baseline for regulatory information and future biota evaluations.

We show that, in warm inflation, the nearly constant Hubble rate and temperature lead to an adiabatic evolution of the number density of particles interacting with the thermal bath, even if thermal equilibrium cannot be maintained. In this case, the number density is suppressed compared to the equilibrium value but the associated phase-space distribution retains approximately an equilibrium form, with a smaller amplitude and a slightly smaller effective temperature. As an application, we explicitly construct a baryogenesis mechanism during warm inflation based on the out-of-equilibrium decay of particles in such an adiabatically evolving state. We show that this generically leads to small baryon isocurvature perturbations, within the bounds set by the Planck satellite. These are correlated with the main adiabatic curvature perturbations but exhibit a distinct spectral index, which may constitute a smoking gun for baryogenesis during warm inflation. O objetivo do estudo é verificar o impacto de uma intervenção específica em robótica, no desenvolvimento do raciocínio matemático, por crianças pré-escolares. No presente estudo, estiveram envolvidas dezoito crianças de um jardim de infância público, com idades compreendidas entre os quatro e os seis anos. A análise estatística dos resultados evidenciou que as crianças dos dois grupos eram equivalentes em todas as variáveis, no pré-teste. Essa equivalência manteve-se no pós-teste, à exceção da variável raciocínio matemático, em que nove das crianças obtiveram resultados significativamente superiores aos do grupo de controlo.

We present the first quantum field theory model of inflation that is renormalizable in the matter sector, with a super-Hubble inflaton mass and sub-Planckian field excursions, which is thus technically natural and consistent with a high-energy completion within a theory of quantum gravity. This is done in the framework of warm inflation, where we show, for the first time, that strong dissipation can fully sustain a slow-roll trajectory with slow-roll parameters larger than unity in a way that is both theoretically and observationally consistent. The inflaton field corresponds to the relative phase between two complex scalar fields that collectively break a U(1)gauge symmetry, and dissipates its energy into scalar degrees of freedom in the warm cosmic heat bath. A discrete interchange symmetry protects the inflaton mass from large thermal corrections. We further show that the dissipation coefficient decreases with temperature in certain parametric regimes, which prevents a large growth of thermal inflaton fluctuations. Degradation rates of two widely used pesticides were assessed, and acute and chronic effects on a standard invertebrate species investigated. An herbicide (Montana®) and fungicide (Bravo500®) formulations were investigated and results were compared to the isolated active substances of each formulation (glyphosate and chlorothalonil, respectively). Tests were performed using the invertebrate Folsomia candida as test species and an agricultural natural soil. Degradation rate tests were determined under aerobic conditions at 20 ± 2 °C, using an ecologically relevant concentration of 5 mg (a.i.) kg−1 of soil for both chemicals. Results demonstrated degradation half-lives (DT50) of 2.2 days for Montana® and 2.8 days when pure glyphosate was tested. Values of 1.1 and 2.9 days were registered for Bravo500® and its active substance chlorothalonil, respectively. There were no effects on survival for the tested concentrations of both forms of the herbicide (up to 17.3 mg kg−1). However, reproduction was affected, but only by the herbicide formulation, with an estimated EC50 value of 4.63 mg (a.i.) kg−1. Effects were most unlikely related to glyphosate. For chlorothalonil, both tested forms affected survival and reproduction. The estimated LC50 values were 117 mg (a.i.) kg−1 and 73.5 mg (a.i.) kg−1, and the EC50 41.3 mg (a.i.) kg−1 and 14.9 mg kg−1 for the formulation and the active ingredient, respectively. The effects of the active ingredient were significantly stronger, indicating the major influence of the active substance in the effects caused also by the formulation. Overall results demonstrate the importance of evaluating the effects of the formulated chemicals, as they are applied in the field, and not only their isolated active ingredients. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

We study the dynamics and observational predictions of warm inflation within a supersymmetric distributed mass model. This dissipative mechanism is well described by the interactions between the inflaton and a tower of chiral multiplets with a mass gap, such that different bosonic and fermionic fields become light as the inflaton scans the tower during inflation. We examine inflation for various mass distributions, analyzing in detail the dynamics and observational predictions. We show, in particular, that warm inflation can be consistently realized in this scenario for a broad parametric range and in excellent agreement with the Planck legacy data. Distributed mass models can be viewed as realizations of the landscape property of string theory, with the mass distributions coming from the underlying spectra of the theory, which themselves would be affected by the vacuum of the theory. We discuss the recently proposed swampland criteria for inflation models on the landscape and analyze the conditions under which they can be met within the distributed mass warm inflation scenario. With the development of Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems in order to mitigate some aquacultures' adverse effects, attention needs to be shifted to other co-cultured species that can also accumulate such pharmaceuticals and pose a risk to human consumption. Therefore, the present work evaluated the exposure of the seaweed Ulva to OTC at two realistic concentrations (0.040 and 0.120 mg L1 ). Oxytetracycline degradation rates in seawater were dependent on the initial concentration but were not influenced by the presence of Ulva. The macroalgae presented good assimilation rates of OTC, with internal concentrations reaching 40.9934 ng g1 WW for the lowest concentration tested and 108.6787 ng g1 WW for the highest, with a steep decrease after 48 and 24 h, respectively. Nonetheless, concentrations were still half of the Maximum Residue Limit set for fish (100 mg kg1) 48 h after C2 treatment. Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems can minimize the environmental impacts of aquaculture, while delivering economical benefits. However, the use of extractive species such as seaweeds can accumulate pharmaceuticals commonly used in these systems. Therefore, this work evaluated the exposure of the seaweed Ulva to enrofloxacin (ENR), a vastly used antimicrobial in aquaculture, at two dosages (C1, 7.5 μg L−1 and C2, 15 μg L−1), and concentrations in water and in Ulva were measured through time. Traditional endpoints such as growth and mortality were assessed as ENR effects in the macroalgae. Enrofloxacin presented good stability in seawater, and degradation rates were influenced by the presence of seaweed at the lowest concentration tested. The seaweed was able to assimilate the antibiotic, reaching internal concentrations of 7.76 ± 1.11 ng g−1 WW after 30 min of exposure for C1, and 14.51 ± 1.22 ng g−1 WW, after 15 min for C2. Lowest concentrations detected at the end of experimental time were 4.08 ± 0.42 ng g−1 WW and 5.09 ± 1.57 ng g−1 WW for C1 and C2, respectively, which nonetheless, corresponds to ∼5% of the maximum residue limit established for fish for ENR by the European regulation. We present a model where the inflaton can naturally account for all the dark matter in the Universe within the warm inflation paradigm. In particular, we show that the symmetries of the Warm Little Inflaton scenario (i) avoid large thermal and radiative corrections to the scalar potential, (ii) allow for sufficiently strong dissipative effects to sustain a radiation bath during inflation that becomes dominant at the end of the slow-roll regime, and (iii) enable a stable inflaton remnant in the post-inflationary epochs. The latter behaves as dark radiation until parametrically before matter-radiation equality, leading to a non-negligible contribution to the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom during nucleosynthesis, becoming the dominant cold dark matter component in the Universe for inflaton masses in the $10^{-4}-10^{-1}$ eV range. We explore the dynamics and observational predictions of the Warm Little Inflaton scenario, presently the simplest realization of warm inflation within a concrete quantum field theory construction. We consider three distinct types of scalar potentials for the inflaton, namely chaotic inflation with a quartic monomial potential, a Higgs-like symmetry breaking potential and a non-renormalizable plateau-like potential. In each case, we determine the parametric regimes in which the dynamical evolution is consistent for 50-60 e-folds of inflation, taking into account thermal corrections to the scalar potential and requiring, in particular, that the two fermions coupled directly to the inflaton remain relativistic and close to thermal equilibrium throughout the slow-roll regime and that the temperature is always below the underlying gauge symmetry breaking scale. We then compute the properties of the primordial spectrum of scalar curvature perturbations and the tensor-to-scalar ratio in the allowed parametric regions and compare them with Planck data, showing that this scenario is theoretically and observationally successful for a broad range of parameter values., 14 pages, 8 figures

We show that the present dark matter abundance can be accounted for by an oscillating scalar field that acquires both mass and a non-zero expectation value from interactions with the Higgs field. The dark matter scalar field can be sufficiently heavy during inflation, due to a non-minimal coupling to gravity, so as to avoid the generation of large isocurvature modes in the CMB anisotropies spectrum. The field begins oscillating after reheating, behaving as radiation until the electroweak phase transition and afterwards as non-relativistic matter. The scalar field becomes unstable, although sufficiently long-lived to account for dark matter, due to mass mixing with the Higgs boson, decaying mainly into photon pairs for masses below the MeV scale. The superradiant instability can lead to the generation of extremely dense axion clouds around rotating black holes. We show that, despite the long lifetime of the QCD axion with respect to spontaneous decay into photon pairs, stimulated decay becomes significant above a minimum axion density and leads to extremely bright lasers. The lasing threshold can be attained for axion masses $\mu \gtrsim 10^{-8}\ \mathrm{eV}$, which implies superradiant instabilities around spinning primordial black holes with mass $\lesssim 0.01M_\odot$. Although the latter are expected to be non-rotating at formation, a population of spinning black holes may result from subsequent mergers. We further show that lasing can be quenched by Schwinger pair production, which produces a critical electron-positron plasma within the axion cloud. Lasing can nevertheless restart once annihilation lowers the plasma density sufficiently, resulting in multiple laser bursts that repeat until the black hole spins down sufficiently to quench the superradiant instability. In particular, axions with a mass $\sim 10^{-5}\ \mathrm{eV}$ and primordial black holes with mass $\sim 10^{24}$ kg, which may account for all the dark matter in the Universe, lead to millisecond-bursts in the GHz radio-frequency range, with peak luminosities $\sim 10^{42}$ erg/s, suggesting a possible link to the observed fast radio bursts., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; modified title and added discussion to match version published in Physical Review Letters (Editors' Suggestion)

We discuss the dynamics and phenomenology of an oscillating scalar field coupled to the Higgs boson that accounts for the dark matter in the Universe. The model assumes an underlying scale invariance such that the scalar field only acquires mass after the electroweak phase transition, behaving as dark radiation before the latter takes place. While for a positive coupling to the Higgs field the dark scalar is stable, for a negative coupling it acquires a vacuum expectation value after the electroweak phase transition and may decay into photon pairs, albeit with a mean lifetime much larger than the age of the Universe. We explore possible astrophysical and laboratory signatures of such a dark matter candidate in both cases, including annihilation and decay into photons, Higgs decay, photon-dark scalar oscillations and induced oscillations of fundamental constants. We find that dark matter within this scenario will be generically difficult to detect in the near future, except for the promising case of a 7 keV dark scalar decaying into photons, which naturally explains the observed galactic and extra-galactic 3.5 keV X-ray line., Comment: Version to match the one published in Journal of High Energy Physics

We study the problem of initial conditions for slow-roll inflation along a plateau-like scalar potential within the framework of fluctuation-dissipation dynamics. We consider, in particular, that inflation was preceded by a radiation-dominated epoch where the inflaton is coupled to light degrees of freedom and may reach a near-equilibrium state. We show that the homogeneous field component can be sufficiently localized at the origin to trigger a period of slow-roll if the interactions between the inflaton and the thermal degrees of freedom are sufficiently strong and argue that this does not necessarily spoil the flatness of the potential at the quantum level. We further conclude that the inflaton can still be held at the origin after its potential begins to dominate the energy balance, leading to a period of thermal inflation. This then suppresses the effects of nonlinear interactions between the homogeneous and inhomogeneous field modes that could prevent the former from entering a slow-roll regime. Finally, we discuss the possibility of an early period of chaotic inflation, at large field values, followed by a first stage of reheating and subsequently by a second inflationary epoch along the plateau about the origin. Este estudo investiga a contribuição do ensino de regras morfológicas para a escrita de palavras e pseudopalavras. Participaram 111 (cento e onze) alunos do 4º ano fundamental de uma escola pública, separados em três grupos experimentais e um grupo de controle. Os estudantes foram submetidos a pré-teste e pós-teste (imediato e diferido) em medidas de controle e discriminação escrita. A intervenção trabalhou com o ensino explícito de regras abordando os seguintes elementos mórficos: "-esa"/"-eza" (morfologia derivacional), "-am"/"-ão" (morfologia flexional), "-iu"/"-il" (morfologia flexional e derivacional). Os resultados mostraram que a intervenção provocou um impacto específico no aumento de desempenho na escrita de palavras e, principalmente, na escrita de pseudopalavras, cuja grafia não pode ser acessada de informações lexicais. Os resultados corroboram os de outros estudos, confirmando o efeito positivo e duradouro do ensino explícito de regras morfológicas sobre a escrita de palavras complexas. This study investigates how teaching morphological rules contributes to the writing of words and pseudo-words. A total of 111 students from the 4th grade of a public school were assigned to three experimental groups and one control group. The students were submitted to pre- and post-tests (immediate and delayed) in control measures and word discrimination. The intervention addressed the explicit teaching of rules concerning the following morphological elements in Portuguese: "-esa"/"-eza" (derivational morphology), "-am"/"-ão" (inflectional morphology), "-iu"/"-il" (inflectional and derivational morphology). The results show that the intervention had a specific impact on improved performance in the spelling of words, especially pseudo-words, the spelling of which cannot be derived from lexical information. The results corroborate those reported by other studies, confirming the positive and lasting effect of explicitly teaching morphological rules for the spelling of complex words. Neonicotinoids are the most prominent group of insecticides in the world and are commercialized in over 120 countries for the control of agricultural pests mainly due to their broad-spectrum activity and versatility in application. Though non-target soil organisms are likely to be exposed during application, there is paucity of information in scientific literature regarding their sensitivity to neonicotinoids. This study attempts to fill this gap by evaluating, under laboratory conditions, the chronic toxicity of the neonicotinoids thiacloprid and acetamiprid, through their commercial formulations (CF), to the soil invertebrates Folsomia candida, Eisenia andrei and Enchytraeus crypticus. Results obtained indicate that the relative reproductive sensitivity of the test organisms can be expressed as: F. candida = E. andrei > E. crypticus (for acetamiprid CF) and E. andrei > F. candida > E. crypticus (for thiacloprid CF). To extrapolate from laboratory test results to field conditions, predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) and predicted no-effect concentrations were derived. Calculated toxicity-exposure ratios (TER = EC10/PEC) were below trigger values for acetamiprid and thiacloprid, when estimated with initial PEC. While estimated hazard quotients (HQ = PEC/PNEC), were greater than the European Commission trigger value. Therefore, with the current data under standard environmental risk assessment schemes it can be considered that the risk of thiacloprid and acetamiprid to the soil compartment is unacceptable. However, further research into the effects of these substances on different organisms is required to increase the confidence in the risk assessment estimates for instance, by calculating hazardous concentrations using species sensitivity distribution curves.

We discuss the conditions under which plane electromagnetic and gravitational waves can be amplified by a rotating black hole due to superradiant scattering. We show, in particular, that amplification can occur for low-frequency waves with an incidence angle parametrically close to 0 (or $\pi$) with respect to the black hole spin axis and with a parametrically small left (or right) polarization. This is the case of the radiation emitted by a spinning electric/magnetic dipole or gravitational quadrupole orbiting a black hole companion at large radius and co-rotating with the latter. This can yield observable effects of superradiance, for example, in neutron star-stellar mass black hole binaries, as well as in triple systems composed by a compact binary orbiting a central supermassive black hole. Due to superradiance, the total source luminosity in these systems exhibits a characteristic orbital modulation that may lead to significant observational signatures, thus paving the way for testing, in the near future, one of the most peculiar predictions of general relativity., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We show that the decay of the inflaton field may be incomplete, while nevertheless successfully reheating the universe and leaving a stable remnant that accounts for the present dark matter abundance. We note, in particular, that since the mass of the inflaton decay products is field-dependent, one can construct models, endowed with an appropriate discrete symmetry, where inflaton decay is kinematically forbidden at late times and only occurs during the initial stages of field oscillations after inflation. We show that this is sufficient to ensure the transition to a radiation-dominated era and that inflaton particles typically thermalize in the process. They eventually decouple and freeze out, yielding a thermal dark matter relic. We discuss possible implementations of this generic mechanism within consistent cosmological and particle physics scenarios, for both single-field and hybrid inflation., 16 pages, 8 figures

We suggest a structure for the vacuum comprised of a network of tightly knotted/linked flux tubes formed in a QCD-like cosmological phase transition and show that such a network can drive cosmological inflation. One century after its formulation, Einstein's general relativity has made remarkable predictions and turned out to be compatible with all experimental tests. Most of these tests probe the theory in the weak-field regime, and there are theoretical and experimental reasons to believe that general relativity should be modified when gravitational fields are strong and spacetime curvature is large. The best astrophysical laboratories to probe strong-field gravity are black holes and neutron stars, whether isolated or in binary systems. We review the motivations to consider extensions of general relativity. We present a (necessarily incomplete) catalog of modified theories of gravity for which strong-field predictions have been computed and contrasted to Einstein's theory, and we summarize our current understanding of the structure and dynamics of compact objects in these theories. We discuss current bounds on modified gravity from binary pulsar and cosmological observations, and we highlight the potential of future gravitational wave measurements to inform us on the behavior of gravity in the strong-field regime., 188 pages, 46 figures, 6 tables, 903 references. We discuss the implications of a model of noncommutative Quantum Mechanics where noncommutativity is extended to the phase space. We analyze how this model affects the problem of the two-dimensional gravitational quantum well and use the latest experimental results for the energy states of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field to establish an upper bound on the fundamental momentum scale introduced by noncommutativity. We show that the configuration space noncommutativity has, in leading order, no effect on the problem and that in the context of the model, a correction to the presently accepted value of Planck's constant to 1 part in $10^{24}$ arises. We also study the transition between quantum and classical behaviour of particles in a gravitational quantum well and analyze how an increase in the particles mass turns the energy spectrum into a continuous one. We consider these effects and argue that they could be tested by through experiments with atoms and fullerene-type molecules.

We show that dissipative effects have a significant impact on the evolution of cosmological scalar fields, leading to friction, entropy production and field fluctuations. We explicitly compute the dissipation coefficient for different scalar fields within the Standard Model and some of its most widely considered extensions, in different parametric regimes. We describe the generic consequences of fluctuation-dissipation dynamics in the post-inflationary universe, focusing in particular on friction and particle production, and analyze in detail two important effects. Firstly, we show that dissipative friction delays the process of spontaneous symmetry breaking and may even damp the the motion of a Higgs field sufficiently to induce a late period of warm inflation. Along with dissipative entropy production, this may parametrically dilute the abundance of dangerous thermal relics. Secondly, we show that dissipation can generate the observed baryon asymmetry without symmetry restoration, and we develop in detail a model of dissipative leptogenesis. We further show that this generically leads to characteristic baryon isocurvature perturbations that can be tested with CMB observations. We study inflationary scenarios driven by a scalar field in the presence of a non-minimal coupling between matter and curvature. We show that the Friedmann equation can be significantly modified when the energy density during inflation exceeds a critical value determined by the non-minimal coupling, which in turn may considerably modify the spectrum of primordial perturbations and the inflationary dynamics. In particular, we show that these models are characterised by a consistency relation between the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the tensor spectral index that can differ significantly from the predictions of general relativity. The observed baryon asymmetry, as well as potentially an asymmetry in the dark matter sector, can be produced through dissipative particle production during inflation. A distinctive feature of this mechanism is the generation of matter isocurvature perturbations that are fully (anti-)correlated with the dominant adiabatic curvature perturbations. We show that chaotic warm inflation models yield anti-correlated isocurvature modes that may partially or even completely screen the contribution of primordial gravity waves to the CMB temperature power spectrum.
