Abstract The anomaly known as a bifid rib is difficult to quantify in bioarchaeological collections not only because of its rarity in the population itself (less than 1.5%), but also because of vulnerability to postmortem damage of this part of the skeleton as well as similarity to other developmental anomalies, which can lead to its misidentification. This work presents five cases of rib bifurcation (from four individuals) from four different populations living in Kujawy region in north-central Poland from the Neolithic until the Early Modern Era. Morphological analyses are matched by a paleoradiological investigation. Furthermore, this study endeavours to summarize all known cases of rib bifurcation in archaeological collections and discuss the correctness of the diagnoses. Additionally, criticism of the arguments allegedly proving the presence of naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS, Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) in the archaeological populations based on available photographic data of bifurcated ribs and associated anomalies is made. Finally, a new proposal for the classification of this anomaly in osteological material is presented.

Abstract Close‐kin mark–recapture (CKMR) is a method that allows estimating population census size, among other parameters, through the observed number of pairs that are close‐kin including parent–offspring pairs (POPs) and half‐sibling pairs (HSPs). CKMR models are capable of estimating abundance, fecundity and survival at age using POPs and HSPs from different cohorts. The link between effective population size (Ne) and the number of ‘within‐cohort’ sibling pairs has been noted before but how to actually achieve such an estimate with CKMR has not been previously demonstrated. We show it is possible to use the number of ‘within‐cohort’ sibling pairs along with POPs and ‘different‐cohort’ HSPs to estimate Ne. These can be combined with an estimate of annual variance in number of offspring to estimate the lifetime variance of total reproductive success which can be used to find Ne. We show that the variance in number of offspring produced by adults in a given year is related to the within‐cohort comparisons. Our approach is demonstrated on an individual‐based simulation where we show that the CKMR Ne estimate offers similar results to Ne estimated from methods like linkage disequilibrium. Our methods allow estimating Ne using CKMR while also estimating demographic parameters.

A spinal epidural empyema (SEE) is a collection of pus between the bones of the vertebral column and the dura covering the spinal cord. It is an uncommon disease in the pediatric population. It requires prompt diagnosis and targeted treatment to prevent permanent disability. The gold standard of management involves surgical treatment and systemic antibiotic therapy. We present the clinical case of a 15-year-old boy with focal back pain in the lower thoracic region, causing limitations of spinal mobility, but no neurological dysfunction. Due to the patient’s history, elevated inflammatory parameters and magnetic resonance imaging, epidural empyema was detected. The patient was operated on with the evacuation of pus from epidural space and temporary drainage placement and following administration of intravenous antibiotics. A complete recovery was achieved. The non-specificity of the SEE symptoms poses a significant challenge for clinicians. Increased vigilance is therefore necessary when diagnosing seemingly benign disorders for a favorable clinical outcome.

Abstract Telemedicine has gained popularity due to the increasing use of technology in our lives. However, no studies have explored the demographic factors affecting acceptability, desirability and adherence (ADA) to telemedicine in Singapore. Our study aims to evaluate the level of ADA of telemedicine services within demographic factors and to explore the association of potential demographic factors with the degree of acceptability, desirability and adherence of telemedicine among older adults in Singapore. A cross-sectional study was conducted with Singapore citizens or permanent residents aged 40–99 years, who were able to provide informed consent. Interviewers conducted door-to-door surveys in 67 Blocks of Housing & Development Board flats in Singapore, offering a self-administered electronic questionnaire available in four languages. Random sampling without replacement determined the order of blocks, floors and units visited. The questionnaire utilised Qtelemediab scoring and covered sociodemographic data, usage of telemedicine, as well as ADA towards telemedicine. A total of 324 valid responses were analysed. Abstract Step selection functions (SSFs) are used to jointly describe animal movement patterns and habitat preferences. Recent work has extended this framework to model inter‐individual differences, account for unexplained structure in animals' space use and capture temporally varying patterns of movement and habitat selection. In this paper, we formulate SSFs with penalised smooths (similar to generalised additive models) to unify new and existing extensions, and conveniently implement the models in the popular, open‐source mgcv R package. We explore non‐linear patterns of movement and habitat selection, and use the equivalence between penalised smoothing splines and random effects to implement individual‐level and spatial random effects. This framework can also be used to fit varying‐coefficient models to account for temporally or spatially heterogeneous patterns of selection (e.g. resulting from behavioural variation), or any other non‐linear interactions between drivers of the animal's movement decisions. We provide the necessary technical details to understand several key special cases of smooths and their implementation in mgcv, showcase the ecological relevance using two illustrative examples and provide R code to facilitate the adoption of these methods. This paper offers a broad overview of how smooth effects can be applied to increase the flexibility and biological realism of SSFs.

Background and Study Aim. The consumption of nitrate has been linked to various advantages, including aiding recovery by lessening fatigue, enhancing oxygen supply to muscles, and increasing the elimination of metabolic by-products during intense physical activity. Given the rising trend of utilizing dietary supplements for peak athletic performance, this literature review aims to explore the role and promise of nitrate supplementation in influencing muscle function and boosting physical prowess, while also shedding light on its potential perks and drawbacks. Material and Methods. Electronic databases including Web of Science (all databases), PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, were explored on June 11, 2022. The search terms were drawn from prior systematic reviews on nitrate supplementation and exercise and informed by a recent narrative review on Nitrates impact on athletic performance and muscle hypertrophy. Results. The findings of this review indicate that nitrate intake, owing to its ability to widen blood vessels, could potentially enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles during exercise. Consequently, this improved circulation might facilitate better nutrient and oxygen transportation to muscle tissue, thereby fostering muscle development through enhanced nutrient absorption and waste removal during physical exertion. However, it's crucial to note that excessive nitrate consumption might trigger adverse effects related to the formation of nitrosamines. Conclusion. In summary, investigations into the potential advantages of nitrate supplementation, whether through dietary sources or supplements, in augmenting athletic performance are promising. This is evident from the observed effects of increased muscle protein synthesis, reduced muscle soreness, and enhanced cognitive function under stressful conditions. Nonetheless, it's imperative to exercise caution against over-supplementation due to the potential risks of toxicity and associated side effects.

Background and Study Aim. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) have received considerable attention in sports science due to their potential benefits in improving athletic performance and promoting muscle recovery. BCAAs including leucine, isoleucine, and valine, are essential amino acids that are important for muscle protein physiology. To date, studies have shown positive effects of BCAA supplementation on muscle recovery, muscle soreness, and cognitive function. Hence, with the growing popularity of using dietary supplements for optimal athletic performance, this narrative literature review aims to investigate the role and potential of BCAA supplementation to influence muscle function and improve physical performance, while highlighting the potential benefits and side effects associated with their supplementation. Material and Methods. The current review was conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis) guidelines. Electronic databases including Web of Science (all databases), PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, were explored on June 11, 2022. Results. Based on recent evidence, BCAAs have been shown to reduce muscle damage, improve muscle recovery and repair, increase muscle protein synthesis, and maintain muscle mass during periods of energy restriction, however may also have some potential side effects such as liver damage, kidney dysfunction and negative effects on glucose metabolism. Conclusion. In conclusion, studies investigating the potential benefits of BCAAs obtained from supplementation and diet to improve athletic performance are promising due to their demonstrated effects in increasing muscle protein synthesis, reducing muscle soreness, and improving cognitive function under stress. Nevertheless, excessive supplementation should be avoided due to the potential risk of toxicity and side effects.

In 1950 on Mount Zlatý kůň (‘Golden Horse’) in modern-day Czech Republic a system of caves was discovered. During many years of research in this area, human and animal osteological remains have been excavated, among which the most interesting ones were nine fragments of a female skull, now dated to ca. 43,000 yrs BP which are one of the earliest known anatomically modern humans in Eurasia. The aim of this research was to use purely digital techniques to: (1) to reconstruct the skull based on the 3D data of preserved fragments, (2) to approximate the probable appearance of the female it belonged to, and (3) to analyze the calculated shape of the reconstructed mandible and volume of the neurocranium in the context of similarities and differences with other representatives of the genus Homo. Computer techniques used in this research constitute a new, original approach to the problem of 3D analyses and may be useful primarily in bioarchaeological sciences, where metric analyses of the most valuable bone artifacts are often severely limited due to the incompleteness of the material available for research. The digital techniques presented here may also contribute significantly to the field of surgery, with the possibility of being adapted for applications in cranial prosthetics and post-traumatic reconstructive surgery.

Abstract Massive calving events result in significant instantaneous ice loss from Antarctica. The rarity and stochastic nature of these extreme events makes it difficult to understand their physical drivers, temporal trends, and future likelihood. To address this challenge, we turn to extreme value theory to investigate past trends in annual maxima iceberg area and assess the likelihood of high‐magnitude calving events. We use 47 years of iceberg size from satellite observations. Our analysis reveals no upward trend in the surface area of the largest annual iceberg over this time frame. This finding suggests that extreme calving events such as the recent 2017 Larsen C iceberg, A68, are statistically unexceptional and that extreme calving events are not necessarily a consequence of climate change. Nevertheless, it is statistically possible for Antarctica to experience a calving event up to several times greater than any in the observational record.

To fully harness the potential of smart textiles, it is cruical to develop energy harvesters which can function both as fabric and energy generator. In this work, we present a high performance low-cost piezoelectric nano-fabric using even-number Nylon (i.e., Nylon-6). Nylon-6 was chosen for optimal mechanical properties such as mechanical strength and stiffness. To maximize the voltage output, Nylon six nanofibers with varying diameter and crystallinity were synthesized by adjusting the polymer precursor and solvent, along with electrospinning parameters, followed by post thermal treatment. The average diameter of electrospun nanofibers was finely tuned (down to 36 nm) by adjusting solution polymer precursor content and electrospinning parameters. The content of desired piezoelectric-active γ crystal phase enhanced upto 76.4% by controlling solvent types and post thermal annealing. The highest peak to peak voltage (V33) of 1.96 V were achieved from γ-phase dominant (>60%) Nylon-6 nanofiber fabric which has an average nanofiber diameter of 36 nm with high fiber fraction (i.e., > 98%). Unlike its thin film counterpart, piezoelectric electrospun nanofiber fabric demonstrated durability against wear and washing. This work paves a new way to utilize Nylon-6 nanofibers in next-generation electronic textiles.

A boy is presented in whom Down Syndrome mosaicism and spinal muscular atrophy by overlapping clinical symptoms delayed the diagnosis and caused complicated motor development. The boy from the first pregnancy was delivered vaginally, week 37, Apgar 10, birth weight 3,650 g. The mother, aged 30, had no family history of Down Syndrome or neuromuscular diseases. Primary diagnosis at the age of 3 weeks: unbalanced male karyotype -mos 47, XY+21 [22]/46, XY. At 20 months, the parents observed the disappearance of the high kneeling function and asked for a neurologist’s consultation. The neurological examination showed symmetrically reduced muscle tone and symmetrically weakened knee and ankle tendon reflexes. The physiotherapeutic assessment revealed a symmetrical weakening of muscle strength and hand tremor (features characteristic of patients with spinal muscular atrophy). The final diagnosis, set at the age of 27 months, was thus the mosaic form of Down Syndrome and spinal muscular atrophy type 2.

Zbiory zapoczątkowane zostały w 1872 r. i znacząco poszerzone w latach 1902-1918 , gdy do Poznania trafiły cenne muzealia z Australii, Oceanii i Afryki. Kolejne znaczące nabytki to kolekcja z Papui Zachodniej od prof. Józefa Zwierzyckiego (1922-1923) oraz kolekcja afrykańska od ks. Edmunda Majkowskiego (1939). Zbiory te – na mocy nie zachowanych w archiwach decyzji władz komunistycznych – zostały w 1950 r. zabrane z Muzeum Narodowego w Poznaniu i wpisane do inwentarza Państwowego Muzeum Etnograficznego w Warszawie. Nie towarzyszyła temu żadna umowa ani akt darowizny, a jedynie pobieżnie sporządzony protokół przekazania. Od 17 lat Muzeum poznańskie bezskutecznie ubiega się o zwrot zabranych muzealiów lub choćby ich wypożyczenie na organizowane wystawy. Wobec wieloletniego odrzucania przez PME wszelkich prób negocjacji, MNP zmuszone zostało do wstąpienia na drogę sądową. Dopiero w ostatnim czasie zarysowała się szansa podjęcia w tej sprawie dyskusji pomiędzy obiema instytucjami.

Elite sports environments can increase psychiatric conditions like stress and depression due to social pressure for specific body shapes, encouraging disordered eating behaviors, especially in endurance, aesthetic, and weight-dependent sports. This review aims to investigate eating habits among athletes suffering from poor mental health and identify dietary strategies or nutritional advice to mitigate these conditions in physically active individuals. The review focused on studies conducted after 2010 involving adults in any level of regular physical activity, showcasing psychiatric symptoms related to a disordered relationship with food, including depression and various eating disorders. The search on the literature databases was conducted on 20th October 2023 through multiple electronic databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar) to capture as many relevant citations as possible. Exclusions were made for studies on children or psychiatric patients. The research was sourced from significant databases, emphasizing the correlation between dietary habits and mental health in athletes. Findings reveal that athletes, particularly in ultra-endurance and weight-dependent sports, are susceptible to psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and exercise addiction. Competitive bodybuilders also showed higher levels of depression and orthorexia nervosa symptoms. Tailored nutrition therapy, guided by healthcare professionals and adjusted to each athlete's specific needs and preferences, is crucial for addressing psychiatric symptoms and eating disorders in athletes. A holistic approach to recovery and well-being can significantly enhance both performance and overall quality of life, underscoring the importance of high-quality, balanced diets in supporting mental health and athletes' achievement.

IntroductionChronic obstructive lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, appear to have a more extensive impact on overall functioning than previously believed. The latest data from clinical trials suggests a potential link between cognitive deterioration and chronic obstructive inflammatory lung disease. This raises the question of whether these diseases affect cognitive functions and whether any relevant biomarker may be identified.MethodsThis prospective observational study included 78 patients divided equally into asthma, COPD, and control groups (n=26, 27 and 25 respectively). The participants underwent identical examinations at the beginning of the study and after at least 12 months. The test battery comprised 16 questionnaires (11 self-rated, 5 observer-rated, assessing cognition and mental state), spirometry, and blood samples taken for PKA and CREB mRNA evaluation.ResultsA 2.3-fold increase in CREB mRNA was observed between examinations (p=0.014) for all participants; no distinctions were observed between the asthma, COPD, and control groups. Pooled, adjusted data revealed a borderline interaction between diagnosis and CREB expression in predicting MMSE (p=0.055) in COPD, CREB expression is also associated with MMSE (β=0.273, p=0.034) like with the other conducted tests (β=0.327, p=0.024) from COPD patients. No correlations were generally found for PKA, although one significant negative correlation was found between the first and second time points in the COPD group (β=-0.4157, p=0.049),.DiscussionChronic obstructive lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, may have some linkage to impairment of cognitive functions. However, the noted rise in CREB mRNA expression might suggest a potential avenue for assessing possible changes in cognition, especially in COPD; such findings may reveal additional transcription factors linked to cognitive decline.

Emotional eating, characterized by the consumption of highly palatable and calorie dense foods in response to psychological distress and negative emotions, poses a significant challenge to global public health and well-being. Based on the studies showing the complex interplay between emotional states and dietary choices, highlighted the motivational role of relief seeking, which according to a Hull's drive reduction theory, emphasizes the role of internal drives and external cues. Inability to cope with negative feelings and/or high tension indicates that emotion regulation can be a critical factor in maintaining well-being, as adaptive regulation protects against negative emotions and external stressors; which if not developed properly, can lead to avoidant coping strategies, which can contribute to eating disorder symptoms. Therefore, dysregulation of the hedonic and homeostatic food intake, compromised cortical control, and alterations in the gut signaling are implicated in obesity triggered by stress-induced eating. Therefore this review aim to further discuss these observations to provide better understanding of the role of emotional eating in providing a relief from the psychological distress, emphasizing impact of the food on the reward system; while providing insights in emerging holistic mitigating approaches which by promoting alternative coping mechanisms and adequate nutrition and supplementation, may help to aid the emotional eating management and reduce burden on related to that illnesses.

Abstract γδ T cells provide rapid cellular immunity against pathogens. Here, we conducted matched single-cell RNA-sequencing and γδ-TCR-sequencing to delineate the molecular changes in γδ T cells during a longitudinal study following mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. While the first dose of vaccine primes Vδ2 T cells, it is the second administration that significantly boosts their immune response. Specifically, the second vaccination uncovers memory features of Vδ2 T cells, shaped by the induction of AP-1 family transcription factors and characterized by a convergent central memory signature, clonal expansion, and an enhanced effector potential. This temporally distinct effector response of Vδ2 T cells was also confirmed in vitro upon stimulation with SARS-CoV-2 spike-peptides. Indeed, the second challenge triggers a significantly higher production of IFNγ by Vδ2 T cells. Collectively, our findings suggest that mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination might benefit from the establishment of long-lasting central memory Vδ2 T cells to confer protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract SNURPORTIN-1, encoded by SNUPN, plays a central role in the nuclear import of spliceosomal small nuclear ribonucleoproteins. However, its physiological function remains unexplored. In this study, we investigate 18 children from 15 unrelated families who present with atypical muscular dystrophy and neurological defects. Nine hypomorphic SNUPN biallelic variants, predominantly clustered in the last coding exon, are ascertained to segregate with the disease. We demonstrate that mutant SPN1 failed to oligomerize leading to cytoplasmic aggregation in patients’ primary fibroblasts and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutant cell lines. Additionally, mutant nuclei exhibit defective spliceosomal maturation and breakdown of Cajal bodies. Transcriptome analyses reveal splicing and mRNA expression dysregulation, particularly in sarcolemmal components, causing disruption of cytoskeletal organization in mutant cells and patient muscle tissues. Our findings establish SNUPN deficiency as the genetic etiology of a previously unrecognized subtype of muscular dystrophy and provide robust evidence of the role of SPN1 for muscle homeostasis.

Abstract Introduction This study characterized the extent to which (1) financial barriers and (2) abortion care-seeking within a person’s country of residence were associated with delays in abortion access among those travelling to England and the Netherlands for abortion care from European countries where abortion is legal on broad grounds in the first trimester but where access past the first trimester is limited to specific circumstances. Methodology We drew on cross-sectional survey data collected at five abortion clinics in England and the Netherlands from 2017 to 2019 (n = 164). We assessed the relationship between difficulty paying for the abortion/travel, acute financial insecurity, and in-country care seeking on delays to abortion using multivariable discrete-time hazards models. Results Participants who reported facing both difficulty paying for the abortion procedure and/or travel and difficulty covering basic living costs in the last month reported longer delays in accessing care than those who had no financial difficulty (adjusted hazard odds ratio: 0.39 95% CI 0.21–0.74). This group delayed paying other expenses (39%) or sold something of value (13%) to fund their abortion, resulting in ~ 60% of those with financial difficulty reporting it took them over a week to raise the funds needed for their abortion. Having contacted or visited an abortion provider in the country of residence was associated with delays in presenting abroad for an abortion. Discussion These findings point to inequities in access to timely abortion care based on socioeconomic status. Legal time limits on abortion may intersect with individuals’ interactions with the health care system to delay care.

The herbicide fluridone (1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-trifluoromethyl (phenyl)]-4(1H)-pyridone) interferes with carotenoid biosynthesis in plants by inhibiting the conversion of phytoene to phytofluene. Fluridone also indirectly inhibits the biosynthesis of abscisic acid and strigolactones, and therefore, our study indirectly addresses the effect of reduced ABA on the roots and leaf buds development in stem cuttings of Salix babylonica L. ‘Tortuosa’. The stem cuttings were kept in distilled water (control) or in a solution of fluridone (10 mg/L) in natural greenhouse light and temperature conditions. During the experiments, morphological observations were carried out on developing roots and leaf buds, as well as their appearance and growth. After three weeks of continuous treatments, adventitious roots and leaf buds were collected and analysed. Identification and analysis of anthocyanins were carried out using micro-HPLC-MS/MS-TOF, while HPLC-MS/MS was used to analyse phenolic acids, flavonoids and salicinoids. The fluridone applied significantly inhibited root growth, but the number or density of roots was higher compared to the control. Contents of salicortin and salicin were several dozen times higher in leaf buds than in roots of willow. Fluridone increased the content of salicortin in roots and leaf buds and declined the level of salicin in buds. Fluridone also declined the content of most anthocyanins in roots but enhanced their content in buds, especially cyanidin glucoside, cyanidin galactoside and cyanidin rutinoside. Besides, fluridone markedly decreased the level of chlorophylls and carotenoids in the leaf buds. The results indicate that applied fluridone solution reduced root growth, caused bleaching of leaf buds, and markedly affected the content of secondary metabolites in the adventitious roots and leaf buds of S. babylonica stem cuttings. The paper presents and discusses in detail the significance of fluridone’s effects on physiological processes and secondary metabolism.

Introduction We previously reported predictors of mortality in 1786 adults with diabetes or stress hyperglycemia (glucose>180 mg/dL twice in 24 hours) admitted with COVID-19 from March 2020 to February 2021 to five university hospitals. Here, we examine predictors of readmission.Research design and methods Data were collected locally through retrospective reviews of electronic medical records from 1786 adults with diabetes or stress hyperglycemia who had a hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test on initial admission with COVID-19 infection or within 3 months prior to initial admission. Data were entered into a Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) web-based repository, and de-identified. Descriptive data are shown as mean±SD, per cent (%) or median (IQR). Student’s t-test was used for comparing continuous variables with normal distribution and Mann-Whitney U test was used for data not normally distributed. X2 test was used for categorical variable.Results Of 1502 patients who were alive after initial hospitalization, 19.4% were readmitted; 90.3% within 30 days (median (IQR) 4 (0–14) days). Older age, lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), comorbidities, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and longer length of stay (LOS) during the initial hospitalization were associated with readmission. Higher HbA1c, glycemic gap, or body mass index (BMI) were not associated with readmission. Mortality during readmission was 8.0% (n=23). Polonia no es un país que cualquiera asociaría con la cultura del vino y los paisajes vinícolas, aunque no fue así en el pasado. Hasta finales de la época medieval europea, en el sur y suroeste de las tierras de la Polonia contemporánea, los viñedos eran un rasgo frecuente del paisaje cultural y el vino, independientemente del autoconsumo, era un lucrativo objeto de comercio con los países escandinavos (sin competir con los países mediterráneos). La Pequeña Edad de Hielo y las guerras, seguidas de la repartición de Polonia entre vecinos poderosos: Rusia, Prusia y Austria-Hungría, y una política socialista de planificación centralizada, acabaron con la producción de vino en Polonia. Hoy asistimos a un renacimiento de la producción nacional de vino y a la expansión de los viñedos a una escala sin precedentes. También asistimos al regreso de los paisajes vinícolas a tierras polacas. Las razones de este retorno a tradiciones casi olvidadas son complejas. En el presente texto intentaremos esbozarlas, aunque cada vez está más claro que el calentamiento global está desempeñando un papel importante en el cambio del mapa vitivinícola del mundo. El cambio del clima está perjudicando a muchos cultivos, pero la vid en Polonia goza de su favor.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) is one of most widely investigated metal oxide semiconductors as gas sensing material because of tunable sensing performance toward different analytes through composition modulation (e.g., dopants) and various morphology and crystallinity. In this work, we synthesized WO3 nanofibers with different diameter and crystallinity through electrospinning of ammonium metatungstate hydrate (AMH)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers via design of experiments (DOE) followed by thermal heat treatment with the smaller average diameter being 23.0 nm. Through varying the calcination process, WO3 nanofibers with different crystallinity were also synthesized, with the smaller average grain size being 23.0 nm. These nanofibers were then exposed to many analytes (i.e., H2S, acetone, toluene, ethanol, ethyl benzene, NO2, NO, and methane) under different operating temperatures (i.e., 250 to 450 °C) to investigate their effect toward sensing response. These systematic studies indicated that nanocrystalline WO3 nanofibers with the smaller diameter (i.e., 20 nm) and/or smaller average grain sizes (i.e.,18.7 nm) exhibited best sensing performance independent of target analytes. The barrier energy was also correlated with the gas sensing performance experimentally.

Abstract Numerous spatiotemporal species distribution modeling frameworks are now available to the ecological practitioner. This study compared three such frameworks accessible in the R programming language: generalized additive models with spatiotemporal smooths as implemented by mgcv, spatiotemporal generalized linear mixed models based on nearest neighbor Gaussian processes as implemented by starve, and spatiotemporal generalized linear mixed models based on the stochastic partial differential equations approach as implemented by sdmTMB. The primary focus was to compare the inferences obtained from applying these frameworks to the case study of the orange‐footed sea cucumber, Cucumaria frondosa, on the Scotian Shelf off Nova Scotia, Canada. Each model was fit to catch data (2000–2019) from Fisheries and Oceans Canada's annual Research Vessel and Snow Crab surveys. Environmental covariates were sourced from high‐resolution data layers, including physical oceanographic, bathymetric, and seafloor morphometric datasets. The three models captured variability in sea cucumber distribution that would have been overlooked without a spatiotemporal approach. Although their predictions were similar, including within C. frondosa spatial reserves, the models provided different inferences regarding covariate effects. This suggests that while practitioners primarily interested in mapping species distributions need only apply the most familiar framework, those most concerned with identifying predictive environmental covariates may benefit from comparing the output from multiple approaches. Employing multiple approaches can also serve as a validation technique.

W artykule przedstawiam genezę wprowadzenia w 2002 roku do brytyjskich szkół sektora państwowego przedmiotu obywatelstwo (Citizenship), omawiam jego założenia oraz prezentuję tłumaczenie jego sylabusa. Klasyfikuję przy tym ten przedmiot jako formę edukacji etycznej. W liberalnej tradycji angielskiej państwo unikało wpływania na rozstrzygnięcia aksjologiczne w obszarze wychowania, stąd wykazanie inicjatywy w sferze edukacji etycznej jest faktem znaczącym. W pierwszej części artykułu, odwołując się do historii państwowego szkolnictwa w Wielkiej Brytanii, rekonstruuję kontekst historyczny, w którym sytuuję wprowadzenie przedmiotu obywatelstwo i wskazuję na czynniki, które doprowadziły do przełamania powściągliwości państwa w tej kwestii. W części drugiej wskazuję na bezpośrednie okoliczności wprowadzenia nowego przedmiotu przez brytyjską Partię Pracy. W części trzeciej analizuję teoretyczne podstawy programu przedmiotu obywatelstwo, które zostały przedstawione w dokumencie znanym jako „Raport Cricka”, opublikowanym w 1998 roku. Moim celem jest pokazanie, że edukacja obywatelska jest wartym rozważenia wariantem edukacji etycznej, a casus angielski może stanowić okazję do przyjrzenia się wyzwaniom, ograniczeniom i możliwościom, jakie wiążą się z wdrażaniem tego rodzaju edukacji.

The purpose of the article is to present the periodicals that discussed issues of cultivation, fruit farming, horticulture and animal breeding in Sandomierz. The time frame covers newspapers published between 1829–2022. The article consists of two parts. The first provides the titles of periodicals published in Sandomierz between 1829–1939, which addressed topics related to agriculture or livestock farming. The second part presents periodicals covering this subject matter that were printed in Sandomierz from 1945–2022. The author indicates that issues related to agriculture in Sandomierz and in the region were not only reflected in the local press published after the political transformation, but became the subject of scholarly and popular-scientific reflection.

Brain development, a complex process, consisting of several phases, starting as early as two weeks after conception, and continuing through childhood till early adolescence, is crucial for the development of properly functioning body systems, behavioral traits, and neurocognitive abilities. Infancy and childhood are recognized as important periods for initial brain formation, however in later stages of life, such as childhood and adulthood, experiences, together with environmental exposures, can still influence brain physiology. The developing brain is particularly susceptible to epigenetic changes with many factors being proposed as modifiers by directly impacting DNA methylation as well as histone and chromatin modifications within genes implicated in development. These factors include: maternal stress and diet, exposure to pollutants, sleep quality, as well as dietary habits. Evidence indicates exposures to environmental threats can lead to inappropriate neurological, metabolic, and endocrine functioning often mediated by epigenetic mechanisms with symptoms manifesting themselves as early as childhood or in later stages of life. Therefore, the main aim of this review is to evaluate the current studies focused on negative environmental exposures and their consequences on the developing brain directed by epigenetic mechanisms.

Unconventional protein sources are currently extensively studied as food ingredients. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of 1.5% and 3% field cricket powder (GB) and 2–8% of its mixture (1:1) with spirulina powder (S) on the nutritional value, physicochemical properties, and sensory characteristics of corn extrudates. Additionally, 2% baking powder (BP) was added to assess its impact on the properties of the enriched extrudates. The results showed that both GB and GB + S improved nutritional value, with protein content increasing by up to 46% and higher levels of essential amino acids, particularly leucine and valine. However, these ingredients decreased the expansion ratio (by up to 15%), colour lightness (by up to 30%), and yellowness (by up to 47%) and increased the hardness (by up to 25%) of the corn extrudates. The S addition positively influenced product storage stability but decreased its sensory acceptance, especially aroma and taste. The BP addition mitigated the negative effects of higher GB and GB + S concentrations, particularly on sensory characteristics. In conclusion, incorporating up to 6% of the GB + S mixture provides a higher protein content with only minor changes to the product’s characteristics compared to GB. Ratings exceeding 4.2 points indicate the good acceptability of these snacks.

The optimal process conditions concerning the hydrothermal carbonization of digested sewage sludge are crucial to the economically effective technology needed to produce a solid product, hydrochar, for energy purposes. Accordingly, different residence times, 0.5 h, 1 h and 2 h, were investigated in order to understand the effect of residence time on the process. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar were investigated and compared to the raw material. For these reasons, analyses describing fuel properties were performed, including ultimate and proximate analyses, HHV, and TGA analysis. The latter method was employed to study the combustion process of solid samples. In addition, the oxide content of different elements within the ash of solid samples was determined using the XRF method to calculate indices related to operational problems during the combustion process. The results confirmed that time did not matter significantly and the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar were very similar to each other. However, the contact angle for 2 h of residence time confirmed that a longer processing time resulted in a more hydrophobic character of hydrochar and enabled more effective dewaterability of hydrothermal slurry. It was also noted that the hydrothermal carbonization process affected the sewage sludge in a positive way. In brief, the results confirmed that the hydrochar was a brittle, moderately hydrophilic, solid carbon-containing product that provided a different combustion performance than the raw sewage sludge.

Abstract Given the widespread demand for novel antibacterial agents, we modified a cell-penetrating peptide (KFF)3K to transform it into an antibacterial peptide. Namely, we inserted a hydrocarbon staple into the (KFF)3K sequence to induce and stabilize its membrane-active secondary structure. The staples were introduced at two positions, (KFF)3K[5–9] and (KFF)3K[2–6], to retain the initial amphipathic character of the unstapled peptide. The stapled analogues are protease resistant contrary to (KFF)3K; 90% of the stapled (KFF)3K[5–9] peptide remained undigested after incubation in chymotrypsin solution. The stapled peptides showed antibacterial activity (with minimal inhibitory concentrations in the range of 2–16 µM) against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, contrary to unmodified (KFF)3K, which had no antibacterial effect against any strain at concentrations up to 32 µM. Also, both stapled peptides adopted an α-helical structure in the buffer and micellar environment, contrary to a mostly undefined structure of the unstapled (KFF)3K in the buffer. We found that the antibacterial activity of (KFF)3K analogues is related to their disruptive effect on cell membranes and we showed that by stapling this cell-penetrating peptide, we can induce its antibacterial character.

This article analyzes Kazimierz Braun’s works from 2016–2020 (Dzwon na trwogę [Alarum Bell], Płonący teatr [The Burning Theatre], Próba Apokalipsy [Apocalypse Rehearsal] and Teatr@ziemia.niebo [Theatre@earth.heaven]) as a series of theater novels with an autobiographical slant. Here, theater becomes a theme, a space for creation, a contribution to reflections on the condition of contemporary theater art, and a way of seeing the world. The image of theater in the memory of Braun the theater director is combined with a dream of theater and a vision of its desired future, which are embedded in a mythologizing memory. The central question of theater’s mission at the individual, national, and social level is accompanied by a critical reflection on present theater, which largely stems from Braun’s evaluation of the achievements of so-called “Second Theatre Reform,” of which he was a participant and chronicler. Therefore, an important point of reference in the analysis of Braun’s novels is provided by his articles and books in theater studies. The mystery of life and theater, which the author of the article has identified as the leitmotif of the novel series, concerns the close relationship between the creative world and the spiritual dimension of human existence and refers to the transformation of the real, finite, and temporal into the imaginary, spiritual, and immortal. In Braun’s essentialist view, this mystery is at the same time the essence of theater and acting. The author argues that the metatheatrical dimension of the world constructed in Braun’s novels is closely linked to the process of the author’s self-interpretation and self-creation as a scholar and practitioner.

Primary pulmonary Hodgkin’s lymphoma (PPHL) is a rare subtype of lymphoma that comprises a small percentage of primary pulmonary lymphomas. Due to its rarity and nonspecific symptoms, PPHL often presents diagnostic challenges. This case report presents a unique case of PPHL mimicking granulomatosis with polyangiitis, emphasizing the difficulties encountered during the diagnostic process. A 53-year-old female presented with vague symptoms including weakness, oedema, dry cough, and nasal cavity ulceration. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated C-reactive protein levels, a white blood cell count with neutrophilia, and lymphopaenia. Initial treatment with oral corticosteroids for suspected polyangiitis yielded no response. The patient subsequently developed a low-grade fever and pruritic erythematous rash. Diagnostic procedures, including bronchial brush biopsy, bronchial washing, mediastinal lymph node biopsy, nasal cavity ulceration biopsy, and initial lung biopsy, were inconclusive and resulted in exclusion of granulomatosis with polyangiitis. A subsequent computed tomography scan indicated disease progression in the left lung. A lung biopsy revealed fibrotic tissue with nodules containing Hodgkin- Reed-Sternberg cells, leading to the final diagnosis of classic Hodgkin lymphoma, nodular sclerosis subtype. Positron emission tomography scan findings confirmed PPHL. The patient received multiple chemotherapeutic regimens, with brentuximab vedotin demonstrating efficacy as the sole effective treatment. This exceptional case of PPHL underscores the extensive diagnostic and therapeutic workup involving a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists. Increased awareness of PPHL and its distinctive features will aid in the diagnosis of similar cases in the future, benefitting both clinicians and pathologists.

Background: Falls risk assessment tools are used in hospital inpatient settings to identify patients at increased risk of falls to guide and target interventions for fall prevention. In 2022, Western Health, Melbourne, Australia, introduced a new falls risk assessment tool, the Western Health St. Thomas’ Risk Assessment Tool (WH-STRATIFY), which adapted The Northern Hospital’s risk tool (TNH-STRATIFY) by adding non-English speaking background and falls-risk medication domains to reflect patient demographics. WH-STRATIFY replaced Peninsula Health Risk Screening Tool (PH-FRAT) previously in use at Western Health. This study compared the predictive accuracy of the three falls risk assessment tools in an older inpatient high-risk population. Aims: To determine the predictive accuracy of three falls risk assessment tools (PH-FRAT, TNH-STRATIFY, and WH-STRATIFY) on admission to Geriatric Evaluation Management (GEM) units (subacute inpatient wards where the most frail and older patients rehabilitate under a multi-disciplinary team). Method: A retrospective observational study was conducted on four GEM units. Data was collected on 54 consecutive patients who fell during admission and 62 randomly sampled patients who did not fall between December 2020 and June 2021. Participants were scored against three falls risk assessment tools. The event rate Youden (Youden IndexER) indices were calculated and compared using default and optimal cut points to determine which tool was most accurate for predicting falls. Results: Overall, all tools had low predictive accuracy for falls. Using default cut points to compare falls assessment tools, TNH-STRATIFY had the highest predictive accuracy (Youden IndexER = 0.20, 95% confidence interval CI = 0.07, 0.34). The PH-FRAT (Youden IndexER = 0.01 and 95% CI = −0.04, 0.05) and WH-STRATIFY (Youden IndexER = 0.00 and 95% CI = −0.04, 0.03) were statistically equivalent and not predictive of falls compared to TNH-STRATIFY. When calculated optimal cut points were applied, predictive accuracy improved for PH-FRAT (Cut point 17, Youden IndexER = 0.14 and 95% CI = 0.01, 0.29) and WH-STRATIFY (Cut point 7, Youden IndexER = 0.18 and 95% CI = 0.00, 0.35). Conclusions: TNH-STRATIFY had the highest predictive accuracy for falls. The predictive accuracy of WH-STRATIFY improved and was significant when the calculated optimal cut point was applied. The optimal cut points of falls risk assessment tools should be determined and validated in different clinical settings to optimise local predictive accuracy, enabling targeted fall risk mitigation strategies and resource allocation.

ObjectivesTo develop a protocol for largescale analysis of synovial fluid proteins, for the identification of biological networks associated with subtypes of osteoarthritis.MethodsSynovial Fluid To detect molecular Endotypes by Unbiased Proteomics in Osteoarthritis (STEpUP OA) is an international consortium utilising clinical data (capturing pain, radiographic severity and demographic features) and knee synovial fluid from 17 participating cohorts. 1746 samples from 1650 individuals comprising OA, joint injury, healthy and inflammatory arthritis controls, divided into discovery (n = 1045) and replication (n = 701) datasets, were analysed by SomaScan Discovery Plex V4.1 (>7000 SOMAmers/proteins). An optimised approach to standardisation was developed. Technical confounders and batch-effects were identified and adjusted for. Poorly performing SOMAmers and samples were excluded. Variance in the data was determined by principal component (PC) analysis.ResultsA synovial fluid standardised protocol was optimised that had good reliability (80% of SOMAmers in pooled samples) and overall good correlation with immunoassay. 1720 samples and >6290 SOMAmers met inclusion criteria. 48% of data variance (PC1) was strongly correlated with individual SOMAmer signal intensities, particularly with low abundance proteins (median correlation coefficient 0.70), and was enriched for nuclear and non-secreted proteins. We concluded that this component was predominantly intracellular proteins, and could be adjusted for using an 'intracellular protein score' (IPS). PC2 (7% variance) was attributable to processing batch and was batch-corrected by ComBat. Lesser effects were attributed to other technical confounders. Data visualisation revealed clustering of injury and OA cases in overlapping but distinguishable areas of high-dimensional proteomic space.ConclusionsWe have developed a robust method for analysing synovial fluid protein, creating a molecular and clinical dataset of unprecedented scale to explore potential patient subtypes and the molecular pathogenesis of OA. Such methodology underpins the development of new approaches to tackle this disease which remains a huge societal challenge.

RX Pup is a symbiotic binary that experienced a nova outburst in the 1970s. Here we report a discovery of a ∼1300 yr old nova shell around the system and a possible detection of a ∼7000 yr old nova shell. Together with the nova shell ejected in the 1970s, this makes RX Pup the first system with three nova shells observed. This triad of eruptions suggests a change in the nova recurrence time. The most likely explanation is an alteration in the mass transfer rate attributed to evolutionary changes of the mass donor in the system. Notably, comparative analyses with theoretical models indicate an increase in the average mass transfer rate by a factor of 3 over the past 10,000 yr. This makes RX Pup a unique system, which allows us to probe millennium-scale evolution of mass transfer rates in binary systems.

Objective. To characterize the eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) population from the POLVAS registry depending on ANCA status and diagnosis onset, including their comparison with the granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) subset with elevated blood eosinophilia (min. 400/μl) (GPA HE) to develop a differentiating strategy. Methods. A retrospective analysis of the POLVAS registry. Results. The EGPA group comprised 111 patients. The ANCA-positive subset (n = 45 [40.54%]) did not differ from the ANCA-negative one in clinics. Nevertheless, cardiovascular manifestations were more common in ANCA-negative patients than in those with anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO) antibodies (46.97% vs. 26.92%, p = 0.045). Abstract Background Impaired kidney function and albuminuria are associated with increased risk of heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). We investigated whether rapid kidney function decline over time is an additional determinant of increased HF risk in patients with T2D, independent of baseline kidney function, albuminuria, and other HF predictors. Methods Included in the study were 7,539 participants in the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study with baseline urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) data, who had completed 4 years of follow-up and had ≥ 3 eGFR measurements during that period (median eGFR/year = 1.9, IQR 1.7–3.2). The association between rapid kidney function decline (eGFR loss ≥ 5 ml/min/1.73 m2/year) and odds of HF hospitalization or HF death during the first 4 years of follow-up was estimated by logistic regression. The improvement in risk discrimination provided by adding rapid kidney function decline to other HF risk factors was evaluated as the increment in the area under the Receiving Operating Characteristics curve (ROC AUC) and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI). Results Over 4 years of follow-up, 1,573 participants (20.9%) experienced rapid kidney function decline and 255 (3.4%) experienced a HF event. Abstract The assessment of hemostasis is necessary to make suitable decisions on the management of patients with thrombotic disorders. In some clinical situations, for example, during thrombophilia screening, the presence of anticoagulants in sample makes diagnosis impossible. Various elimination methods may overcome anticoagulant interference. DOAC-Stop, DOAC-Remove and DOAC Filter are available methods to remove direct oral anticoagulants in diagnostic tests, although there are still reports on their incomplete efficacy in several assays. The new antidotes for direct oral anticoagulants – idarucizumab and andexanet alfa – could be potentially useful, but have their drawbacks. The necessity to remove heparins is also arising as heparin contamination from central venous catheter or therapy with heparin disturbs the appropriate hemostasis assessment. Heparinase and polybrene are already present in commercial reagents but a fully-effective neutralizer is still a challenge for researchers, thus promising candidates remain in the research phase.

Glycoalkaloids (TGAs, total glycoalkaloids), toxic secondary metabolites, are found in potatoes (110–335 mg·kg−1 DW), mainly in the peel. Colorful, unpeeled potatoes are an innovative raw material for the production of snacks which are poorly tested in terms of their glycoalkaloid content. Third-generation snacks and French fries made from red-fleshed Mulberry Beauty (MB) and purple-fleshed Double Fun (DF) potatoes were produced with the use of 1% solutions of ascorbic, citric, lactic, malic, and tartaric acids to stabilize the structure of anthocyanins in the raw material and maintain their color in obtained products. The influence of the type of acid and thermal processes, like frying, microwaving, and baking, on the content of glycoalkaloids in ready-made products was examined. Only 0.45–1.26 mg·100 g−1 of TGA was found in pellet snacks and 1.32–1.71 mg·100 g−1 in French fries. Soaking blanched potatoes in organic acid solution reduced the α-chaconine content by 91–97% in snacks and by 57–93% in French fries in relation to the raw material to the greatest extent after the use of malic acid and the DF variety. The effect of lactic and citric acid was also beneficial, especially in the production of baked French fries from MB potatoes.

There is a nationwide effort to increase the representation and engagement of minoritized students in computer science education. Discourse about the barriers to diversity among computer science majors is often characterized by student pathologies and does not consider the impacts of classroom culture and instructor pedagogies. Amid the push for strategies to recruit and retain minoritized students in computer science, little has been done to transform curriculum and analyze faculty perspectives on curriculum and pedagogy as methods to increase students’ access to the computer science major. This paper presents an example of curriculum redesign for an undergraduate introductory computer science course (ICS) that sought to address issues of inequitable representation by centering student identities and redistributing power in favor of students. The authors draw upon critical sociocultural and the 4Es heuristic for disciplinary literacy to reimagine the ICS course as a space that centers on the important roles of identity and power in solving for diversity in computer science education. We highlight for researchers and practitioners how our work may be used to disrupt meritocratic practices that alienate minoritized and economically disadvantaged students and to expand definitions of mastery and expertise in computer science education.

AbstractThis article focuses on access to early medical abortion care under Section 12 of the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018, in Ireland and identifies existing barriers resulting from gaps in current policy design. The article draws primarily on qualitative interviews with 24 service users, 20 primary healthcare providers in the community and 27 key informants, including from grassroots groups that work with women from different migrant communities, to examine service users’ experiences accessing early medical abortions on request up to 12 weeks gestation. The interviews were part of a wider mixed-methods study from 2020-2021 examining the barriers and facilitators to the implementation of abortion policy in Ireland. Our findings highlight care seekers’ experiences with the GP-led service provision, including delays, facing non-providers, the mandatory three-day waiting period, and oversubscribed women’s health and family planning clinics. Our findings also highlight the compounding challenges for migrants and additional barriers posed by the geographical distribution of the service and the 12-week gestational limit. Finally, it focuses on the remaining challenges for racialised and other marginalised groups. In order to provide a “thick description” of women’s lives and the complexity of their experiences with abortion services in Ireland, we also present two narrative vignettes of service users, and their experiences with delays and navigating the healthcare system as migrants. To this effect, this article applies a reproductive justice framework to the results to highlight the compounding effects of these barriers on people located along multiple axes of social inequality.

Background: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a retroperitoneal tumour, accounting for less than 0.2% of all malignancies in children. In pediatric patients, the most common clinical presentation is virilisation, either isolated or in combination with hypercortisolemia. Case report: A 4-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital for diagnostic evaluation of precocious puberty and features of hypercorticism. Ultrasonography revealed a heterogeneous neoplastic lesion between the left kidney and spleen. Computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed a pathological mass in the left adrenal region. The urine steroid profile was suggestive of adrenocortical carcinoma. The patient was qualified for surgery. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. A PET scan performed a few months later showed a metabolically active lesion in the left lobe of the liver. Due to the suspicion of a metastatic focus, it was proposed to implement systemic treatment, to which the patient's parents did not agree. After 15 months of no treatment and oncological follow-up, the girl was referred to the ED with symptoms of progression of the neoplastic process. In the face of a renewed lack of consent to the inclusion of treatment, the patient was referred to a home hospice, where she died a short time later. Conclusions: In the pediatric population, adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare neoplasm with a very poor prognosis. Prompt diagnosis enables early identification of the primary tumour and implementation of appropriate treatment. Imaging examinations are crucial in order to assess the size of the tumour, the extent of local invasion and the presence of potential metastases.
