Abstract

We have investigated phenological shifts in autumn- and winter-spawning Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) in the Eastern English Channel and the Southern North Sea (Downs component), in relation to temperature and the availability of potential zooplanktonic prey (Calanus finmarchicus, Calanus helgolandicus, Temora longicornis). A two-tiered approach building on the monthly distribution of commercial herring landings was developed, which consisted of, (1) calculating the timing and duration of spawning season based on estimated deviations from basic harmonic signals and, (2) analysing their inter-annual variations in relation to biotic (zooplankton abundance) and abiotic (temperature) environmental variables through time series analyses. The start, midpoint and ending of herring spawning season were increasingly delayed over the period 1999–2021, a process which was correlated with the abundance of Calanus finmarchicus. The resulting duration of spawning season slightly decreased. Direct effects of sea temperatures on any phenological metrics could not be clearly evidenced. Different ecological processes were likely involved in the start and ending of spawning season. Additional covariates (including size/age composition, the biotic and abiotic factors other than those examined in our study) could contribute to a better explanation of the phenological drift in Downs herring spawning. Abstract

Return rates of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the sea to European rivers have declined in recent decades. The first months at sea are critical for growth and survival; recent evidence suggests that reduced food availability may be a contributory factor to the observed declines. Here, zooplankton abundance data are used to derive a measure of prey energy available to forage fish prey of salmon during early marine migration. This zooplankton prey energy has significantly and dramatically declined over much of the northeast Atlantic, and specifically within key salmon migration domains, over the past 60 years. Marine return rates from a set of southern European populations are found to exhibit clustering not entirely predictable from geographical proximity. Variability in grouped return rates from these populations is correlated with zooplankton energy on a range of scales, demonstrating the potential use of zooplankton energy as an indicator of salmon marine survival. Comparison with environmental variables derived from ocean model reanalysis data suggests zooplankton energy is regulated by a combination of climate change impacts on ecosystem productivity and multi-decadal variability in water mass influence along the migration routes. 13. A Golden Opportunity: Improving Children's Health through California's Schools.

Abstract

The rising number of uninsured children in California underscores the need to redouble efforts to enroll all eligible children in the Healthy Families Program (California's State Children's Health Insurance Program), or in Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid program). This report describes the research and fieldwork conducted by Consumers Union's Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools project exploring opportunities to connect schools with Healthy Families and Medi-Cal. The report describes existing school-based enrollment efforts, and offers policy recommendations for making outreach and enrollment activities an integral part of the mission of California's public schools. Between January and June of 1999, Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools compiled demographic data on California's schools in areas with the greatest need for school-based outreach for children's health insurance programs. Written surveys were conducted with school nurses and Healthy Start staff and telephone surveys were conducted with school personnel statewide. Both survey responses and fieldwork indicated that partnerships between schools, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies are highly effective in promoting Healthy Families and Medi-Cal. Resulting policy recommendations include: (1) finding additional resources to initiate and support school outreach and enrollment activities; (2) testing school-based outreach and enrollment strategies through pilot projects; (3) developing policy to institutionalize school-based efforts to reduce numbers of uninsured children; (4) developing policy to reflect schools' experiences with health insurance outreach and enrollment initiatives and to facilitate schools' participation in these activities; (5) improving the state's methods for gathering and analyzing data on Healthy Families/Medi-Cal enrollment to identify the most effective forms of outreach; (6) and conducting additional research on the connection between health insurance and school performance. The report concludes by asserting that linking schools and health insurance offers a golden opportunity to expand health care coverage to all of California's children--the first step toward healthier kids and healthier schools. Abstract

Planktonic Foraminifera are unique paleo-environmental indicators through their excellent fossil record in ocean sediments. Their distribution and diversity are affected by different environmental factors including anthropogenically forced ocean and climate change. Until now, historical changes in their distribution have not been fully assessed at the global scale. Here we present the FORCIS (Foraminifera Response to Climatic Stress) database on foraminiferal species diversity and distribution in the global ocean from 1910 until 2018 including published and unpublished data. The FORCIS database includes data collected using plankton tows, continuous plankton recorder, sediment traps and plankton pump, and contains ~22,000, ~157,000, ~9,000, ~400 subsamples, respectively (one single plankton aliquot collected within a depth range, time interval, size fraction range, at a single location) from each category. Our database provides a perspective of the distribution patterns of planktonic Foraminifera in the global ocean on large spatial (regional to basin scale, and at the vertical scale), and temporal (seasonal to interdecadal) scales over the past century.

Abstract

Numerous long-term ecological changes have been attributed to climate change (1). Shifts in the seasonal timing of recurring biological events such as reproduction and migration (that is, phenological changes) have [...], Differences in phenological responses to climate change among species can desynchronise ecological interactions and thereby threaten ecosystem function. To assess these threats, we must quantify the relative impact of climate change on species at different trophic levels. Here, we apply a Climate Sensitivity Profile approach to 10,003 terrestrial and aquatic phenological data sets, spatially matched to temperature and precipitation data, to quantify variation in climate sensitivity. The direction, magnitude and timing of climate sensitivity varied markedly among organisms within taxonomic and trophic groups. Despite this variability, we detected systematic variation in the direction and magnitude of phenological climate sensitivity. Secondary consumers showed consistently lower climate sensitivity than other groups. We used mid-century climate change projections to estimate that the timing of phenological events could change more for primary consumers than for species in other trophic levels (6.2 versus 2.5-2.9 days earlier on average), with substantial taxonomic variation (1.1-14.8 days earlier on average).

Abstract

The present deliverable (D4.2) constitutes version 2 of the Handbook of Standards and Best Practices regarding AtlantECO's augmented observations and technological innovations as described in Work Package 4. The Handbook will be developed throughout the project and will be delivered progressively as four revised and augmented deliverables (D4.1-D4.4). The Handbook will address standards and best practices with respect to: Sample collection Sample biobanking Sample analysis Access and Benefits Sharing Provenance reporting Environmental context reporting AtlantECO will generate new observations as part of the activities described in its Grant Agreement and also via a number of synergies with other European and International projects. The Handbook aims to harmonise as much as possible the methodologies used across these projects on some key types of observations, while allowing enough flexibility to adapt methodologies to the different observation programmes, therefore maximising the adoption of the standards and best practices. The present deliverable augments the Handbook with a collection of packages made publicly available on Zenodo (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4897860). 48. Are plankton nets a thing of the past? An assessment of in situ imaging of zooplankton for large-scale ecosystem assessment and policy decision-making

Abstract

Zooplankton are fundamental to aquatic ecosystem services such as carbon and nutrient cycling. Therefore, a robust evidence base of how zooplankton respond to changes in anthropogenic pressures, such as climate change and nutrient loading, is key to implementing effective policy-making and management measures. Currently, the data on which to base this evidence, such as long time-series and large-scale datasets of zooplankton distribution and community composition, are too sparse owing to practical limitations in traditional collection and analysis methods. The advance of in situ imaging technologies that can be deployed at large scales on autonomous platforms, coupled with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) for image analysis, promises a solution. However, whether imaging could reasonably replace physical samples, and whether AI/ML can achieve a taxonomic resolution that scientists trust, is currently unclear. We here develop a roadmap for imaging and AI/ML for future zooplankton monitoring and research based on community consensus. To do so, we determined current perceptions of the zooplankton community with a focus on their experience and trust in the new technologies. Our survey revealed a clear consensus that traditional net sampling and taxonomy must be retained, yet imaging will play an important part in the future of zooplankton monitoring and research. A period of overlapping use of imaging and physical sampling systems is needed before imaging can reasonably replace physical sampling for widespread time-series zooplankton monitoring. In addition, comprehensive improvements in AI/ML and close collaboration between zooplankton researchers and AI developers are needed for AI-based taxonomy to be trusted and fully adopted. Encouragingly, the adoption of cutting-edge technologies for zooplankton research may provide a solution to maintaining the critical taxonomic and ecological knowledge needed for future zooplankton monitoring and robust evid
