1. Thinking twice inside the box: is Wigner's friend really quantum?

Abstract

There has been a surge of recent interest in the Wigner's friend paradox, sparking several novel thought experiments and no-go theorems. The main narrative has been that Wigner's friend highlights a counterintuitive feature that is unique to quantum theory, and which is closely related to the quantum measurement problem. Here, we challenge this view. We argue that the gist of the Wigner's friend paradox can be reproduced without assuming quantum physics, and that it underlies a much broader class of enigmas in the foundations of physics and philosophy. To show this, we first consider several recently proposed extended Wigner's friend scenarios, and demonstrate that their implications for the absoluteness of observations can be reproduced by classical thought experiments that involve the duplication of agents. Crucially, some of these classical scenarios are technologically much easier to implement than their quantum counterparts. Then, we argue that the essential structural ingredient of all these scenarios is a feature that we call "Restriction A": essentially, that a physical theory cannot give us a probabilistic description of the observations of all agents. Finally, we argue that this difficulty is at the core of other puzzles in the foundations of physics and philosophy, and demonstrate this explicitly for cosmology's Boltzmann brain problem. Our analysis suggests that Wigner's friend should be studied in a larger context, addressing a frontier of human knowledge that exceeds the boundaries of quantum physics: to obtain reliable predictions for experiments in which these predictions can be privately but not intersubjectively verified., Comment: 21+8 pages, 3 figures

2. Spin-bounded correlations: rotation boxes within and beyond quantum theory

Abstract

How can detector click probabilities respond to spatial rotations around a fixed axis, in any possible physical theory? Here, we give a thorough mathematical analysis of this question in terms of "rotation boxes", which are analogous to the well-known notion of non-local boxes. We prove that quantum theory admits the most general rotational correlations for spins 0, 1/2, and 1, but we describe a metrological game where beyond-quantum resources of spin 3/2 outperform all quantum resources of the same spin. We prove a multitude of fundamental results about these correlations, including an exact convex characterization of the spin-1 correlations, a Tsirelson-type inequality for spins 3/2 and higher, and a proof that the general spin-J correlations provide an efficient outer SDP approximation to the quantum set. Furthermore, we review and consolidate earlier results that hint at a wealth of applications of this formalism: a theory-agnostic semi-device-independent randomness generator, an exact characterization of the quantum (2,2,2)-Bell correlations in terms of local symmetries, and the derivation of multipartite Bell witnesses. Our results illuminate the foundational question of how space constrains the structure of quantum theory, they build a bridge between semi-device-independent quantum information and spacetime physics, and they demonstrate interesting relations to topics such as entanglement witnesses, spectrahedra, and orbitopes., Comment: 27+22 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We introduce a class of semi-device-independent protocols based on the breaking of spacetime symmetries. In particular, we characterise how the response of physical systems to spatial rotations constrains the probabilities of events that may be observed: in our setup, the set of quantum correlations arises from rotational symmetry without assuming quantum physics. On a practical level, our results allow for the generation of secure random numbers without trusting the devices or assuming quantum theory. On a fundamental level, we open a theory-agnostic framework for probing the interplay between probabilities of events (as prevalent in quantum mechanics) and the properties of spacetime (as prevalent in relativity)., Comment: 5+12 pages, 4 figures. 14. Abstract

Objective: The thesis had two objectives. The first was to examine the effectiveness of self-compassion-focused and mindfulness-based interventions in improving the emotional wellbeing of mental health professionals. A systematic review aimed to provide a comprehensive and updated critical examination of the available literature. The second objective was to examine the relationships between carer burden, self-compassion, emotional intelligence, depression and anxiety in family caregivers of individuals with a diagnosis of diagnosis. The empirical study also aimed to identify any potential protective mechanisms of self-compassion and emotional intelligence on the impact of carer burden. Method: To address the first research objective, electronic databases were systematically searched to identify appropriate studies and a quality assessment was undertaken. An independent reviewer assessed the quality of seven papers. To address the second research objective, a cross-sectional study was conducted and participants (N =164) completed five online questionnaires examining carer burden, depression, anxiety, emotional intelligence and self-compassion. Results: In the systematic review, 22 studies comprising 1015 participants met the eligibility criteria to be included in the review. Quality appraisal highlighted several limitations in the studies. There was relatively strong evidence for the effectiveness of both self-compassion and mindfulness-based therapies on multiple measures of emotional wellbeing. There was mixed evidence for the sustained benefits when using longer-term follow-up periods. In the empirical project, higher carer burden was associated with and predicted lower levels of depression and anxiety in family carers of individuals with dementia. Higher self-compassion and emotional intelligence were also associated and predicted lower levels of depression and anxiety. Self-compassion and emotional intelligence did not moderate the relationships between carer burden and depression and anxiety. Conclusions: The findings of the review suggest evidence that self-compassion-focused and mindfulness-based interventions are effective in improving emotional wellbeing in mental health professionals, although methodological weaknesses need to be taken into consideration. Further research is required to establish the evidence base on this topic, in particular longitudinal studies. The empirical study provided evidence that self-compassion and emotional intelligence can predict mental health symptoms in a sample of participants experiencing high levels of carer burden. This suggest that individual differences are important to consider when evaluating resilience in this population. Additional research is required to better understand the interactions between these variables in family caregivers. Note: The overall aim of this thesis was to examine emotional wellbeing in both professionals who work in mental health settings and in informal family caregivers. Due to the increasing amount of research into the constructs of self-compassion and emotional intelligence, the empirical study examined these factors, and their relationships with depression, anxiety and carer burden in a sample of family caregivers of individuals with a diagnosis of dementia. Due to the limited number of research studies examining these factors in family carergivers, a systematic review was not warranted. As such, the systematic review aimed to highlight the needs of ‘professional carers’ by examining the effectiveness of self-compassion and mindfulness-based in mental health professionals. Overall, the thesis aims to further the research into self-compassion, mindfulness and emotional intelligence, emotional wellbeing in both family and professional caregivers.

Abstract

The earliest Holocene occupation of Orkney is still poorly understood. This pilot study explores the use of multi-factorial landscape and land-cover reconstruction to form a baseline physical environment for the assessment of Mesolithic movement and potential site suitability. A geographic information systems (GIS) approach to landscape reconstruction through proxy use allows for an analogue of Mesolithic land cover and extent to be generated and used to predict the potential for Mesolithic site/material remains. The integration of agent-based modelling introduces a novel investigation of pathways in the landscape, divined not with a fixed destination but with a programmed least-cost movement behaviour to extrude “natural corridors” of movement from the study area. Utilising the base physical characteristics of the natural environment, without introducing complex sociopolitical or economic drivers for movement promotes the use of a complex physical environment as a necessary consideration as baseline for all studies of mobility and movement. This approach also intends to present a platform to develop more universal or widely applicable models capable of providing a relevant baseline landscape for the rapid assessment and investigation of the archaeological potential of an area. Developing or understanding the role of a robust landscape permits the appropriate assessment of project utility, scale, and layering and integration of more complex input factors.

Abstract

Understanding the factors which control endothelial cell (EC) function and angiogenesis is crucial for developing the horse as a disease model, but equine ECs remain poorly studied. In this study, we have optimised methods for the isolation and culture of equine aortic endothelial cells (EAoECs) and characterised their angiogenic functions in vitro. Mechanical dissociation, followed by magnetic purification using an anti-VE-cadherin antibody, resulted in EC-enriched cultures suitable for further study. Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) increased the EAoEC proliferation rate and stimulated scratch wound closure and tube formation by EAoECs on the extracellular matrix. Pharmacological inhibitors of FGF receptor 1 (FGFR1) (SU5402) or mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK) (PD184352) blocked FGF2-induced extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) phosphorylation and functional responses, suggesting that these are dependent on FGFR1/MEK-ERK signalling. In marked contrast, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) had no effect on EAoEC proliferation, migration, or tubulogenesis and did not promote ERK1/2 phosphorylation, indicating a lack of sensitivity to this classical pro-angiogenic growth factor. Gene expression analysis showed that unlike human ECs, FGFR1 is expressed by EAoECs at a much higher level than both VEGF receptor (VEGFR)1 and VEGFR2. These results suggest a predominant role for FGF2 versus VEGF-A in controlling the angiogenic functions of equine ECs. Collectively, our novel data provide a sound basis for studying angiogenic processes in horses and lay the foundations for comparative studies of EC biology in horses versus humans. Abstract

Objectives: To map organisational interventions for workplace suicide prevention, identifying the effects, mechanisms, moderators, implementation and economic costs, and how interventions are evaluated. Background: Suicide is a devastating event that can have a profound and lasting impact on the individuals and families affected, with the highest rates found among adults of work age. Employers have a legal and ethical responsibility to provide a safe working environment for their employees, which includes addressing the issue of suicide and promoting mental health and well-being. Methods: A realist perspective was taken, to identify within organisational suicide prevention interventions, what works, for whom and in what circumstances. Published and unpublished studies in six databases were searched. To extract and map data on the interventions the Effect, Mechanism, Moderator, Implementation, Economic (EMMIE) framework was used. Mechanisms were deductively analysed against Bronfenbrenner's socio-ecological model. Results: From 3187 records screened, 46 papers describing 36 interventions within the military, healthcare, the construction industry, emergency services, office workers, veterinary surgeons, the energy sector and higher education. Most mechanisms were aimed at the individual's immediate environment, with the most common being education or training on recognising signs of stress, suicidality or mental illness in oneself. Studies examined the effectiveness of interventions in terms of suicide rates, suicidality or symptoms of mental illness, and changes in perceptions, attitudes or beliefs, with most reporting positive results. Few studies reported economic costs but those that did suggested that the interventions are cost-effective. Conclusions: It seems likely that organisational suicide prevention programmes can have a positive impact on attitudes and beliefs towards suicide as well reducing the risk of suicide. Education, to support individuals to recognise the signs and symptoms of stress, mental ill health and suicidality in both themselves and others, is likely to be an effective starting point for successful interventions. Abstract

Inclusions containing TAR DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43) are a pathological hallmark of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). One of the disease-specific features of TDP-43 inclusions is the aberrant phosphorylation of TDP-43 at serines 409/410 (pS409/410). Here, we developed rabbit monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that specifically detect pS409/410-TDP-43 in multiple model systems and FTD/ALS patient samples. Specifically, we identified three mAbs (26H10, 2E9 and 23A1) from spleen B cell clones that exhibit high specificity and sensitivity to pS409/410-TDP-43 peptides in an ELISA assay. Biochemical analyses revealed that pS409/410 of recombinant TDP-43 and of exogenous 25 kDa TDP-43 C-terminal fragments in cultured HEK293T cells are detected by all three mAbs. Moreover, the mAbs detect pS409/410-positive TDP-43 inclusions in the brains of FTD/ALS patients and mouse models of TDP-43 proteinopathy by immunohistochemistry. 48. Literacy Practitioners' Perspectives on Adult Learning Needs and Technology Approaches in Indigenous Communities

Abstract

Current reports of literacy rates in Australia indicate an ongoing gap in literacy skills between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian adults, at a time when the literacy demands of work and life are increasing. There are many perspectives on what are the literacy needs of Indigenous adults, from the perspectives of community members themselves to the relatively under-researched perspective of literacy practitioners. This paper provides the insights, experiences and recommendations from adult literacy practitioners who work with adult Indigenous learners in communities across Australia. Focus group interviews, using an online synchronous platform, were used to elicit views about the literacy needs of Indigenous adults in communities and the successes in and barriers to meeting those needs. The practitioners also shared their views on the use of technology in literacy learning. Together, these views can inform future directions in curriculum design and teaching approaches for community-based Indigenous adult literacy education.
