Porous-activated carbons (PAC) show a lot of applications in various fields due to their large surface area and appropriate pore volume, along with decent thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability. Because of these characteristics, PACs are the best choice as an electrode material in supercapacitors (SCs). Due to the utility of PACs, this work reports the transformation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) into PAC with a surface area of 162.40 m2/g. The synthesized PAC exhibits a maximum specific capacitance (CSP) of 40 F/g at five mV/s in 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium thiocyanate ionic liquid (EMIM SCN-IL) electrolyte. Also, no degradation was recorded in the initial Csp of the fabricated SC, even after 9000 cycles at room temperature. Additionally, using the same PAC in counter electrode dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) was also fabricated, and the cell was tested at 1 sun condition, which shows a fill factor of 59.37 % and an efficiency of 1.42 %.

This study aimed to assess the chemical composition and pesticidal activities of essential oils (EOs) from Cautleya spicata rhizomes and aerial parts. The EOs were assessed against root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) by mortality and hatchability bioassays and the phytotoxicity of the EOs was determined against Raphanus raphanistrum subspp. Sativus (radish) and Cichorium intybus (chicory) seeds. In-silico screening of the primary constituents of EOs and five chosen target proteins of the nematode was conducted to predict the expected mechanism of action of these oils. p-Cymene and β-pinene were the key compounds in the EOs from the rhizomes and aerial parts. The EO from the aerial parts (LC50 value = 0.555 µL/mL for nematode mortality assay and IC50 value = 0.016 µL/mL for nematode egg hatchability after 96 h) exhibited significantly higher nematicidal activity than the rhizome EO. However, rhizome EO showed higher phytotoxic activity against radish (R. raphanistrum) with lower IC50 values (0.157 and 0.123 µL/mL for RLI and SLI, respectively) and chicory (C. intybus) seeds (100% inhibition at 1.0 µL/mL concentration). Docking studies revealed the strongest inhibitory actions of β-selinene against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and cytochrome c oxidase (CytC), spathulenol against glutathione S-transferase (GST-1), and β-eudesmol against heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) and odorant response gene-3 (ODR3) proteins. The study unveiled the chemical diversity present in both the EOs and rhizomes of C. spicata along with their considerable potential as plant-based pesticidal agents effective against nematodes and weed species.

Extensive research efforts have been devoted to using greenhouse gas CO2 in upgrading bio-derived feedstock to value-added chemicals using the oxidative dehydrogenation route (CO2-ODH) with low-energy input. To realize the effective deployment of CO2-ODH at an industrial scale, it is imperative to advance the development of robust catalysts that can selectively catalyze C-H over C-C bonds, while simultaneously demonstrating thermodynamic stability to coke formation or sintering. Transition metal-based catalysts exhibit significant potential for being highly selective and reactive in the simultaneous conversion of CO2 and hydrocarbons, owing to their surface reducibility, well-balanced acid/base properties, and dynamic oxygen storage capacity. To stimulate further optimization, it's crucial to discover key design principles, potential trends and descriptors, and effective strategies to fine-tune the catalyst materials. This review comprehensively examines experimental and theoretical research aimed at pinpointing the key catalytic characteristics that affect selectivity in transition metal-based mono, bi, and multimetal oxides. It covers aspects like combinations of active metals and supports, effects of composition and alloying, interfacial structures, adsorption strengths, dynamics of in-situ restructuring, defect creation, surface morphology, and electronic properties, among others. We wrap up by suggesting approaches to overcome present obstacles in catalyst design and reactor technology, potentially bridging the lab-to-industry gap in this domain.

ABSTRACTNon-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a life-threatening cancer associated with a higher mortality rate. Despite promising results shown by combination therapies, there remains a need for efficient drug delivery materials capable of combining various drugs, imaging agents, and targeting agents to enhance treatment efficacy. In this study, we present the synthesis of novel core-shell hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (@MSN) with bimodal porosity and a large surface area (694 m2/g) to facilitate targeted drug delivery for NSCLC treatment. The hollow core-shell structure enables the loading of a substantial quantity of the pemetrexed drug, up to 839 µg/mg, with a sustained release of 20% within 48 h. The MSN is surface functionalised with amino and carboxyl groups to accommodate an imaging agent and facilitate the attachment of the targeting drug bevacizumab. These particles exhibit rapid uptake by both A549 and PC-9 cells. Moreover, the targeting by bevacizumab leads to higher cytotoxicity within 48 h and induces apoptosis more effectively than the non-functionalised samples. As a versatile drug delivery platform, the hollow core-shell MSN demonstrated in this study holds great potential for various drug delivery applications.

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers, affecting more than 2.1 million people across the globe every year. A very high occurrence and mortality rate of lung cancer have prompted active research in this area with both conventional and novel forms of therapies including the use of nanomaterials based drug delivery agents. Specifically, the unique physico-chemical and biological properties of porous nanomaterials have gained significant momentum as drug delivery agents for delivering a combination of drugs or merging diagnosis with targeted therapy for cancer treatment. This review focuses on the emergence of nano-porous materials for drug delivery in lung cancer. The review analyses the currently used nanoporous materials, including inorganic, organic and hybrid porous materials for delivering drugs for various types of therapies, including chemo, radio and phototherapy. It also analyses the selected research on stimuli-responsive nanoporous materials for drug delivery in lung cancer before summarizing the various findings and projecting the future of emerging trends. This review provides a strong foundation for the current status of the research on nanoporous materials, their limitations and the potential for improving their design to overcome the unique challenges of delivering drugs for the treatment of lung cancer.

Recent demand of eco-friendly advanced materials for automotive components motivated to develop natural fiber-reinforced composites due to their extraordinary properties with minimum weight at low cost. The reinforcement of microcellulosic extracted from lignocellulosic materials can enhance the mechanical properties with astonishing the biodegradability quality in the polymer-based composites. Bahunia racemosa (BR) fibers were chosen to extract cellulose microfibers through chemo-mechanical method and the chemical compositions at different stages are determined by using ASTM standards. The average diameter of the extracted cellulose micro Bahunia racemosa fibers (CMBRF) found as 10 μm. The microfiber composites are fabricated at different weight fractions such as 20, 30, 40 and 50 by compression molding method. Surface properties of the produced fibers and fabricated composite structures are analyzed through microscopic techniques. The influence of reinforcement effect on the mechanical properties of fabricated composite structures is analyzed through standard testing methods. The composites reinforced with 40 wt% of cellulose microfibers exhibited highest enhancement about the tensile strength and young modulus of 80.25 and 40%, respectively. The proposed composites can be used to make various low cost, light weight composite materials for industrial and construction industries.

Abstract Mesoporous carbon nitrides (MCNs) are versatile materials and find use in applications such as catalysis, gas capture, and remediation. The development of new forms of MCNs, such as C3N5, C3N6, and C3N7, has expanded their scope further. One of the least reviewed applications of these materials is in the field of sensing, though it has been demonstrated that their sensing abilities are on par with other comparable materials. Their excellent properties such as high surface area, tunable stoichiometry, adjustable electronic structure, and basicity, make them well‐suited for the adsorption and detection of a wide range of analytes. Herein, the new findings in the synthesis of MCNs and their exciting prospects for sensing are reviewed. The review is divided into two broad sections: 1) discussions on the synthesis of MCNs using hard/soft templating, sol–gel, and template‐free methods; and 2) their capabilities for photoelectrochemical, optical, and quartz microbalance‐based sensing. The findings from the recent literature are showcased and the covered topics are explained with comparative analyses. The current review is a timely presentation of the concerned topic and will serve as a useful piece of information for developing advanced sensors using MCN based materials.

The essential oils and aroma derived from the leaves (L), stems (St), and spikes (s) of Piper nigrum L. cv. Guajarina were extracted; the essential oils were extracted using hydrodistillation (HD), and steam distillation (SD), and the aroma was obtained by simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE). Chemical constituents were identified and quantified using GC/MS and GC-FID. Preliminary biological activity was assessed by determining the toxicity against Artemia salina Leach larvae, calculating mortality rates, and determining lethal concentration values (LC50). The predominant compounds in essential oil samples included α-pinene (0–5.6%), β-pinene (0–22.7%), limonene (0–19.3%), 35 linalool (0–5.3%), δ-elemene (0–10.1%), β-caryophyllene (0.5–21.9%), γ-elemene (7.5–33.9%), and curzerene (6.9–31.7%). Multivariate analysis, employing principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), revealed three groups among the identified classes and two groups among individual compounds. The highest antioxidant activity was found for essential oils derived from the leaves (167.9 41 mg TE mL−1). Larvicidal potential against A. salina was observed in essential oils obtained from the leaves (LC50 6.40 μg mL−1) and spikes (LC50 6.44 μg mL−1). The in silico studies demonstrated that the main compounds can interact with acetylcholinesterase, thus showing the potential molecular interaction responsible for the toxicity of the essential oil in A. salina.

Abstract Carbon‐based nanomaterials, including graphene, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes, are attracting significant attention as promising materials for next‐generation energy storage and conversion applications. They possess unique physicochemical properties, such as structural stability and flexibility, high porosity, and tunable physicochemical features, which render them well suited in these hot research fields. Technological advances at atomic and electronic levels are crucial for developing more efficient and durable devices. This comprehensive review provides a state‐of‐the‐art overview of these advanced carbon‐based nanomaterials for various energy storage and conversion applications, focusing on supercapacitors, lithium as well as sodium‐ion batteries, and hydrogen evolution reactions. Particular emphasis is placed on the strategies employed to enhance performance through nonmetallic elemental doping of N, B, S, and P in either individual doping or codoping, as well as structural modifications such as the creation of defect sites, edge functionalization, and inter‐layer distance manipulation, aiming to provide the general guidelines for designing these devices by the above approaches to achieve optimal performance. Furthermore, this review delves into the challenges and future prospects for the advancement of carbon‐based electrodes in energy storage and conversion.

Bio-based composites are getting popular due to its major contribution to the green materials industry application. Green techniques reduce the toxic gas emission, waste generation and improve environmental protection. The extraction of cellulose microfibers from natural fibers using the steam explosion technique is a cost-effective and traditional method. In this study, cellulose microfiber was extracted from raw Grewia optiva (GO) fiber by a chemo-mechanical method. Chemical treatments like alkaline treatment, steam explosion, bleaching, and acid treatment are used. Also, mechanical defibrillation of fiber was carried out by stirring and homogenization. The chemical compositions of various stages were determined by using ASTM standards. The microscopic, XRD, FTIR and TGA techniques were used to analyze structural and morphological properties of fibers. The extracted cellulose micro Grewia optiva fibers (CMGOF) had an average diameter of 10 μm. TGA results indicated that the thermal properties of isolated cellulose microfibers are improved after chemical treatment. The cellulose micro Grewia optiva fibers reinforced epoxy composites were fabricated adopting the compression molding method by varying the fiber ratio. Also, the mechanical properties of composites with various fiber ratios were investigated. The experimental results revealed that composite having 40 wt% of fiber has shown higher tensile, impact strength and hardness properties.

Abstract Solar‐driven photothermal water evaporation is considered an elegant and sustainable technology for freshwater production. The existing systems, however, often suffer from poor stability and biofouling issues, which severely hamper their prospects in practical applications. Conventionally, photothermal materials are deposited on the membrane supports via vacuum‐assisted filtration or dip‐coating methods. Nevertheless, the weak inherent material‐membrane interactions frequently lead to poor durability, and the photothermal material layer can be easily peeled off from the hosting substrates or partially dissolved when immersed in water. In the present article, the discovery of the incorporation of borophene into cellulose nanofibers (CNF), enabling excellent environmental stability with a high light‐to‐heat conversion efficiency of 91.5% and water evaporation rate of 1.45 kg m−2 h−1 under simulated sunlight is reported. It is also demonstrated that borophene papers can be employed as an excellent active photothermal material for eliminating almost 100% of both gram‐positive and gram‐negative bacteria within 20 min under three sun irradiations. The result opens a new direction for the design of borophene‐based papers with unique photothermal properties which can be used for the effective treatment of a wide range of wastewaters.

The objective of the current study was to evaluate the altitudinal variability in chemical compounds, nematicidal, insecticidal, herbicidal, and antifungal activity of the essential oils of H. coronarium collected from four different habitats of Tarai and Kumaun region of Uttarakhand. Essential oils were hydro-distilled from rhizomes of H. coronarium, and their yield varied from 0.05 to 0.25% (v/w). Based on GC-MS analysis, the major compounds observed were 1, 8-cineole (12.21–18.27%), coronarin E (10.20–14%), α-terpineol (5.32–10.13%), terpinen-4-ol (2.20–4.67%), α-pinene (4.90–8.77%), Z-caryophyllene (4.67–12.29%), and linalool (1.96–4.62%). To visually observe the variation in the oil composition profile of essential oils, heat map clustering, Venn diagram, and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed. To evaluate the pesticidal properties, the essential oils were tested under laboratory conditions. Additionally, significant nematicidal activity was demonstrated by essential oils against Meloidogyne incognita, good insecticidal activity against Spodoptera litura, and moderate herbicidal activity on Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. sativus, and effective antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum and Curvularia lunata was observed in the current investigation.

Abstract With the threat of increasing SARS‐CoV‐2 cases looming in front of us and no effective and safest vaccine available to curb this pandemic disease due to its sprouting variants, many countries have undergone a lockdown 2.0 or planning a lockdown 3.0. This has upstretched an unprecedented demand to develop rapid, sensitive, and highly selective diagnostic devices that can quickly detect coronavirus (COVID‐19). Traditional techniques like polymerase chain reaction have proven to be time‐inefficient, expensive, labor intensive, and impracticable in remote settings. This shifts the attention to alternative biosensing devices that can be successfully used to sense the COVID‐19 infection and curb the spread of coronavirus cases. Among these, nanomaterial‐based biosensors hold immense potential for rapid coronavirus detection because of their noninvasive and susceptible, as well as selective properties that have the potential to give real‐time results at an economical cost. These diagnostic devices can be used for mass COVID‐19 detection to understand the rapid progression of the infection and give better‐suited therapies. This review provides an overview of existing and potential nanomaterial‐based biosensors that can be used for rapid SARS‐CoV‐2 diagnostics. Novel biosensors employing different detection mechanisms are also highlighted in different sections of this review. Practical tools and techniques required to develop such biosensors to make them reliable and portable have also been discussed in the article. Finally, the review is concluded by presenting the current challenges and future perspectives of nanomaterial‐based biosensors in SARS‐CoV‐2 diagnostics.

Abstract The present study reports the upcycling process of waste plastics into value-added product graphene nanosheets (GNs) and their subsequent applications in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and supercapacitors. Bentonite nanoclay has been used as an agent for the degradation of waste plastics with two step pyrolysis processes at 450 °C and 945 °C in an inert atmosphere of N2 gas to obtain GNs. The GNs with few layers were confirmed by the RAMAN spectroscopy, XRD and HRTEM analyses. Further, FT-IR and EDX analyses also performed for the identification and quantitative analysis of functional groups in GNs. The GNs thus synthesized from plastic waste have been used for the fabrication of DSSCs and supercapacitors. The DSSC fabrication with GNs as part of photo-anode with polymeric electrolyte showed a high fill factor of 86.4% and high Voc of 0.77 V, which were also supported by the computational findings. On the other hand, the utilization of GNs as an active layer material of supercapacitor electrodes offered a high specific capacitance of 398 F/g with a scan rate of 0.005 V/s. The supercapacitor also exhibited significant energy density (Ed) and power density (Pd) of 38 Wh/kg and 1009.74 W/kg, respectively. Thus, the process illustrated the utility of waste plastics upcycling for conservation of EEE i.e., ecology, economy and energy for better tomorrow.

In this work, the analytical and experimental study on isolation of microfibers from Hibiscus sabdariffa var. altissima fiber using the steam explosion technique is discussed. Structural and thermal analysis of fiber is done by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscope image confirmed that the diameter of the fiber is reduced to approximately 5 µm and defibrillation of the fiber after bleaching process is also observed. XRD analysis of H. sabdariffa fiber at raw and acid hydrolyses stage demonstrated that the crystallinity index is increased from 77.8% to 86.7%. FT-IR results indicated the devaluation of lignin and hemicellulose after the chemical treatment and enhancement of thermal stability can also be seen by TGA results.

The essential oils (EOs) of Guatteria schomburgkiana (Gsch) and Xylopia frutescens (Xfru) (Annonaceae) were obtained by hydrodistillation, and their chemical composition was evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Herbicide activity was measured by analyzing the seed germination percentage and root and hypocotyl elongation of two invasive species: Mimosa pudica and Senna obtusifolia. The highest yield was obtained for the EO of Xfru (1.06%). The chemical composition of Gsch was characterized by the presence of the oxygenated sesquiterpenes spathulenol (22.40%) and caryophyllene oxide (14.70%). Regarding the EO of Xfru, the hydrocarbon monoterpenes α-pinene (35.73%) and β-pinene (18.90%) were the components identified with the highest concentrations. The germination of seeds of S. obtusifolia (13.33 ± 5.77%) showed higher resistance than that of seeds of M. pudica (86.67 ± 5.77%). S. obtusifolia was also more sensitive to the EO of Xfru in terms of radicle (55.22 ± 2.72%) and hypocotyl (71.12 ± 3.80%) elongation, while M. pudica showed greater sensitivity to the EO of Gsch. To screen the herbicidal activity, the molecular docking study of the major and potent compounds was performed against 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) protein. Results showed good binding affinities and attributed the strongest inhibitory activity to δ-cadinene for the target protein. This work contributes to the study of the herbicidal properties of the EOs of species of Annonaceae from the Amazon region.

The over-dependence on fossil fuels is one of the critical issues to be addressed for combating greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, one of the promising alternatives to fossil fuels, is renewable, carbon-free, and non-polluting gas. The complete utilisation of hydrogen in every sector ranging from small to large scale could hugely benefit in mitigating climate change. One of the key aspects of the hydrogen sector is its production via cost-effective and safe ways. Electrolysis and photocatalysis are well-known processes for hydrogen production and their efficiency relies on electrocatalysts which are generally noble metals. The usage of noble metals as catalysts makes these processes costly and their scarcity is also a limiting factor. Metal nitrides and their porous counterparts have drawn considerable attention from researchers due to their good promise for hydrogen production. Their properties such as active metal centres, nitrogen functionalities, and porous features such as surface area, pore-volume, and tunable pore size could play an important role in electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production. This review focuses on the recent developments in metal nitrides from their synthesis methods point of view. Much attention is given to the emergence of new synthesis techniques, methods, and processes of synthesizing the metal nitride nanostructures. The applications of electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production are summarised. Overall, this review will provide useful information to researchers working in the field of metal nitrides and their application for hydrogen production.

This article reports a sustainable, and greener production of graphene sheets from waste plastics, further their utilization into the enhancement of compression and tensile strength of cementing concrete mixture. A modified binary pyrolysis approach was followed for the production of graphene sheets from waste plastic. Further, the potential of synthesized graphene sheets was tested for making the high-standard concrete. In this regard, four concrete mixtures having different ratios of waste plastic derived graphene sheets (WGS) (0.10%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) along with pure concrete blocks were prepared. The results exhibited the comprehensive enhancement of 42.86% in compression strength and 30% in tensile strength for the sample with 0.5% of WGS which was cured for 28 days. Further, the market cost analysis of designed concrete mixtures was done from the economical index point of view. Also, evaluations of the mechanical strength data suggested, that the WGS based concrete blocks (WGB) namely WGB-01 and WGB-02 showed greater performance with affordable cost.

Evidence indicates that nitrosative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction participate in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Amyloid beta (Aβ) and peroxynitrite induce mitochondrial fragmentation and neuronal cell death by abnormal activation of dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1), a large GTPase that regulates mitochondrial fission. The exact mechanisms of mitochondrial fragmentation and DRP1 overactivation in AD remain unknown; however, DRP1 serine 616 (S616) phosphorylation is likely involved. Although it is clear that nitrosative stress caused by peroxynitrite has a role in AD, effective antioxidant therapies are lacking. Cerium oxide nanoparticles, or nanoceria, switch between their Ce(3+) and Ce(4+) states and are able to scavenge superoxide anions, hydrogen peroxide and peroxynitrite. Therefore, nanoceria might protect against neurodegeneration. Here we report that nanoceria are internalized by neurons and accumulate at the mitochondrial outer membrane and plasma membrane. Furthermore, nanoceria reduce levels of reactive nitrogen species and protein tyrosine nitration in neurons exposed to peroxynitrite. Importantly, nanoceria reduce endogenous peroxynitrite and Aβ-induced mitochondrial fragmentation, DRP1 S616 hyperphosphorylation and neuronal cell death.

A comparative study of volatiles, antioxidant activity, phytotoxic activity, as well as in silico molecular docking and ADMET study, was conducted for essential oils from three Vitex species, viz., V. agnus-castus, V. negundo, and V. trifolia. Essential oils (OEs) extracted by hydrodistillation were subjected to compositional analysis using GC-MS. A total number of 37, 45, and 43 components were identified in V. agnus-castus, V. negundo, and V. trifolia, respectively. The antioxidant activity of EOs, assessed using different radical-scavenging (DPPH, H2O2 and NO), reducing power, and metal chelating assays, were found to be significant as compared with those of the standards. The phytotoxic potential of the EOs was performed in the receptor species Raphanusraphanistrum (wild radish) and the EOs showed different levels of intensity of seed germination inhibition and root and shoot length inhibition. The molecular docking study was conducted to screen the antioxidant and phytotoxic activity of the major and potent compounds against human protein target, peroxiredoxin 5, and 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase protein (HPPD). Results showed good binding affinities and attributed the strongest inhibitory activity to 13-epi-manoyl oxide for both the target proteins.
