Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome and complications of dorsal closing wedge steotomy for Freiberg disease of the metatarsals. Treatment of Freiberg starts with conservative approach and ends with surgical procedure in case conservative mode fails. There is a variety of surgical procedures with no gold standard treatment. Patients & Methods: The study was conducted from March 2011 to April 2018 and a total of 15 patients were included for dorsal closing wedge osteotomy of the distal metaphysis at the neck of metatarsal and fixation with k-wires. Average age of the patients was 27.5 years with 13 female patients. All the stages of Freiberg were operated except stage I. The average follow up was 30.7 months. Results: Average metatarsal shortening of 1.4 mm was seen and the AOFAS score improved from average of 62.6 preoperatively to 83.7 at final follow up. 80 % patients had excellent and good outcome at final followup. Conclusion: We conclude that dorsal closing wedge osteotomy can be done for any stage of Freiberg disease with good and acceptable results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To find the serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels in patients of systemic sclerosis and morphoea in the Kashmir Valley. Methods This was a cross sectional study conducted in the department of dermatology of SKIMS Medical College over a period of one year involving 12 patients of systemic sclerosis and morphea and equal number of healthy controls. All the individuals were taken up for serum copper and ceruloplasmin levels. Results In patients with systemic sclerosis, the mean levels of copper and ceruloplasmin were increased. No alterations were found in patients with morphea and healthy controls. Conclusion The increase in serum copper is probably secondary to increase in ceruloplasmin level, which occurs as a nonspecific response to inflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A case of keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans in young Kashmiri male is presented. This rare disorder with genetic and clinical heterogeneity, inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern is secondary to mutation in SAT1 gene located at Xp22.1. Background: Adverse cutaneous drug reactions (ACDRs) are caused by a wide variety of agents. The aim was to study the incidence and clinico-demographic profile of ACDRs to identify any potential risk factors and compare the results with other studies. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted over a period of one year from October 2012 to October 2013 in the outpatient department (OPD) of a tertiary care teaching hospital of the Kashmir valley in India and various ACDRs were recorded. Results: The incidence of ACDRs was 0.16%. The mean age of patients was 39.36 ± 16.77 years. The male: female ratio was 0.97:1. The most frequently reported cutaneous reactions were with antimicrobials (57.33%) followed by NSAIDs (21.33%) and antiepileptic drugs (17.33%). Less common groups involved were steroids, antipsychotics and bisphosphonates (1.33% each). Fixed drug eruptions (FDEs) were the commonest (45.33%) followed by maculopapular (17.33%), photoallergic (8%), erythema multiforme (6.66%), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (5.33%) and lichenoid eruptions (4%). Less common patterns were urticaria, Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome) and acneform eruptions (2.66% each) followed by angioedema, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), exfoliative dermatitis and toxic epidermal necrolysis (1.33% each). Conclusion: Physicians should have adequate knowledge of adverse drug reactions, especially of newer drugs which are increasing every year in order to minimize such events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
