Abstract

The unique global feature of COSY is its ability to accelerate, store and manipulate polarized proton and deuteron beams. In the recent past, these beams have been used primarily for precision measurements, in particular in connection with the study of charged particle EDMs (Electric Dipole Moment) in storage rings. The role of COSY as a R&D facility and for initial (static and oscillating) EDM measurements can hardly be overestimated. Unfortunately, as a consequence of the strategic decisions of Forschungszentrum J\"ulich and the subsequent "TransFAIR" agreement between FZJ and GSI Darmstadt, it is currently planned to stop the operation of COSY by the end of 2024. The various groups working with polarized beams at COSY felt it important to collect information on essential measurements to be performed until the termination of machine operation. These experiments, briefly described in this document along with an estimate of the beam time required, serve as pathfinder investigations toward an EDM storage ring and Spin for FAIR., Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR. The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

Abstract

We present a concept for control of the ion polarization, called a transparent spin method. The spin transparency is achieved by designing such a synchrotron structure that the net spin rotation angle in one particle turn is zero. The polarization direction of any ions including deuterons can be efficiently controlled using weak quasi-static fields. These fields allow for dynamic adjustment of the polarization direction during an experiment. The main features of the Transparent Spin method are illustrated in a figure-8 collider. The results are relevant to the Electron-Ion Collider considered in the US, the ion-ion collider NICA constructed in Russia, and a polarized Electron-ion collider planned in China.

Abstract

The spin program at NICA using SPD and MPD requires high intensity polarized proton beam with high value of the beam polarization. First results on the measurements of the proton beam polarization performed at internal target at Nuclotron are reported. The polarization of the proton beam provided by new source of polarized ions has been measured at 500 MeV using quasielastic proton-proton scattering and DSS setup at internal target. The obtained value of the vertical polarization of ~35 % is consistent with the calculations taking into account the current magnetic optics of the Nuclotron injection line., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The choice of a figure 8 shape for the booster and collider rings of MEIC opens wide possibilities for preservation of the ion polarization during beam acceleration as well as for control of the polarization at the collider's interaction points. As in the case of accelerators with Siberian snakes, the spin tune is energy independent but is equal to zero instead of one half. The figure-8 topology eliminates the effect of arcs on the spin motion. There appears a unique opportunity to control the polarization of any particle species including deuterons, using longitudinal fields of small integrated strength (weak solenoids). Contrary to existing schemes, using weak solenoids in figure-8 colliders, one can control the polarization at the interaction points without essentially any effect on the beam's orbital characteristics. A universal scheme for control of the polarization using weak solenoids provides an elegant solution to the problem of ion acceleration completely eliminating resonant beam depolarization. It allows one to easily adjust the polarization in any direction at any orbital location, which becomes necessary when transferring the beam from one ring into another or when measuring the polarization by polarimeters. It also allows for an easy manipulation of the spin direction at an interaction point during an experiment. The latter feature allows one to set up a spin-flipping system with a spin reversal time of less than a second. By compensating the coherent part of the zero-integer spin resonance strength, which arises due to errors in alignment of the magnetic element of the lattice, one can reduce the field integrals of the control solenoids by a few orders of magnitude.

Abstract

The physical spin program at high $p_T$ region and energies $s^{1/2}_{NN} \sim 10 GeV$ is discussed. It's shown that cumulative processes, color transparency problem and polarization phenomenons directly connect with properties new form of the nuclear matter as Color Quark Condensate(CQC). Studies of CQC one of the most important physical problem and can be realized using polarized ion beams at JINR nuclotron-M (and in future at NICA). The calculations of spin resonance strengthes in the linear approximation for p, d, t and $^3He$ beams in the JINR nuclotron are presented. The methods to preserve the degree of polarization during crossing the spin resonances are examined. The method of matching the direction of polarization vector during the beam injection in to the ring of the nuclotron is given.
