Pulmonary function tests (PFTs), which depend on patient effort, are traditionally used to evaluate lung function. The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is an effort-independent method for examining lung function during tidal breathing. The FOT is used universally to assess respiratory function in patients with COPD. Several studies have measured FOT to assess ventilatory disturbances in CAO. The results showed that FOT measurements in patients with CAO were similar to those reported in patients with COPD. However, no studies have compared FOT measurements directly between CAO and COPD. The aim of this study was to identify differences in ventilatory disturbances between peripheral and central airway obstructions in COPD and CAO, before patients received pharmacological therapy or bronchoscopic interventions, respectively.Patients and Methods: We retrospectively included 16 patients with CAO (10 cases of tracheal obstruction and 6 cases of bronchial obstruction) and 75 treatment-naïve patients with COPD (60 cases in Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease [GOLD] stage II and 15 cases in GOLD stage III) that were admitted from December 2013 to May 2017. Prior to treatment, patients were examined with the FOT and PFTs.Results: All parameters measured with the FOT in the inspiratory phase were significantly worse in patients with CAO than in patients with COPD. The PFTs showed that the CAO group had a significantly lower peak expiratory flow rate. In the airway wall thickening phenotype of COPD, a difference between the inspiratory and expiratory phases of the resonance frequency (ΔFres) was the best indicator for distinguishing between peripheral and central airway obstructions.Conclusion: This study compared differences between CAO and COPD (mainly GOLD stage II). We found that the FOT measurement, ΔFres, was the optimal indicator of the difference between the airway wall thickening COPD phenotype and CAO. Abstract

The $4f$-electron system YbAl$_3$C$_3$ with a non-magnetic spin-dimer ground state has been studied by neutron diffraction in an applied magnetic field. A long-range magnetic order involving both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components has been revealed above the critical field H$_C\sim $ 6T at temperature T=0.05K. The magnetic structure indicates that the geometrical frustration of the prototype hexagonal lattice is not fully relieved in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase. The suppression of magnetic ordering by the remanent frustration is the key factor stabilizing the non-magnetic singlet ground state in zero field. Temperature dependent measurements in the applied field H=12T revealed that the long-range ordering persists up to temperatures significantly higher than the spin gap indicating that this phase is not directly related to the singlet-triplet excitation. Combining our neutron diffraction results with the previously published phase diagram, we support the existence of an intermediate disordered phase as the first excitation from the non-magnetic singlet ground state. Based on our results, we propose YbAl$_3$C$_3$ as a new material for studying the quantum phase transitions of heavy-fermion metals under the influence of geometrical frustration.

Abstract

We report the electronic structure of a prototypical valence fluctuation system, YbAl2, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The observed band dispersions and Fermi surfaces are well described in terms of band structure calculations based on local density approximation. Strong hybridization between the conduction and 4f bands is identified on the basis of the periodic Anderson model. The evaluated small mass enhancement factor and the high Kondo temperature qualitatively agree with those obtained from thermodynamic measurements. Such findings suggest that the strong hybridization suppresses band renormalization and is responsible for the valence fluctuations in YbAl2.

Abstract

We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) to investigate the electronic structure of YbAl2, for which the Yb valence has not been consistently reported to date. The bulk sensitivity and the analytical simplicity provided by the Yb 3d core-level HAXPES allow a reliable determination of the mean valence of Yb ions. For YbAl2, it is evaluated to be +2.20, which remains nearly unchanged below 300 K. The Kondo resonance peak with an extremely high Kondo temperature (above 2000 K) is clearly identified in the valence-band spectra. The results indicate that a coherent Kondo state can be robust even in a nearly divalent system.

Abstract

We have demonstrated that ferroelectric polarization in a spin-driven multiferroic CuFe1-xGaxO2 with x = 0.035 can be controlled by the application of uniaxial pressure. Our neutron diffraction and in-situ ferroelectric polarization measurements have revealed that the pressure dependence of the ferroelectric polarization is explained by repopulation of three types of magnetic domains originating from the trigonal symmetry of the crystal. We conclude that the spin-driven anisotropic lattice distortion and the fixed relationship between the directions of the magnetic modulation wave vector and the ferroelectric polarization are the keys to this spin-mediated piezoelectric effect., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

In a now-classic study by Srull and Wyer (1979), people who were exposed to phrases with hostile content subsequently judged a man as being more hostile. And this “hostile priming effect” has had a significant influence on the field of social cognition over the subsequent decades. However, a recent multi-lab collaborative study (McCarthy et al., 2018) that closely followed the methods described by Srull and Wyer (1979) found a hostile priming effect that was nearly zero, which casts doubt on whether these methods reliably produce an effect. To address some limitations with McCarthy et al. (2018), the current multi-site collaborative study included data collected from 29 labs. Each lab conducted a close replication (total N = 2,123) and a conceptual replication (total N = 2,579) of Srull and Wyer's methods. The hostile priming effect for both the close replication (d = 0.09, 95% CI [-0.04, 0.22], z = 1.34, p =.16) and the conceptual replication (d = 0.05, 95% CI [-0.04, 0.15], z = 1.15, p =.58) were not significantly different from zero and, if the true effects are non-zero, were smaller than what most labs could feasibly and routinely detect. Despite our best efforts to produce favorable conditions for the effect to emerge, we did not detect a hostile priming effect. We suggest that researchers should not invest more resources into trying to detect a hostile priming effect using methods like those described in Srull and Wyer (1979).

9. Prognostic value of geriatric nutritional risk index for aspiration pneumonia: a retrospective study

Abstract

Background/Objectives: The clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of aspiration pneumonia remain poorly defined. Geriatric nutrition risk index (GNRI) has recently been reported to exhibit a prognostic value for several diseases in older adults. Thus, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and prognostic significance of GNRI for aspiration pneumonia in a sample of older adult patients. Design: Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting: Single-institute acute-phase community hospital. Participants: Patients with aspiration pneumonia diagnosed at our institute between April 2014 and March 2016. Measurements: Data on patient characteristics, microbiological findings, and clinical course were extracted from electronic medical records. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was conducted to compare the predictive value of each parameter. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent prognostic factors. Results: Overall, 587 patients with aspiration pneumonia aged ≥ 65 years were enrolled. The mean age was 86 years. Among the patients, 97 patients (16.5%) died. ROC analysis for in-hospital mortality revealed that GNRI had a greater area under the curve value than albumin, body mass index, and A-DROP score, with a significant difference between GNRI and albumin (p=0.0058). Male gender sex (odds ratio [OR]: 1.88, p = 0.028,), chronic heart failure (OR: 2.14, p = 0.023), history of malignancy (OR: 2.66, p = 0.0025), lower GNRI (OR: 0.94, p < 0.001), and initial antibiotic change (OR: 4.22, p < 0.001) were identified as independent adverse prognostic factors in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that GNRI is a potential prognostic marker for older adults with aspiration pneumonia and may act as a proxy for disease severity. Our results support the use of GNRI in the clinical management of aspiration pneumonia.

18. Analysis of 13C-NMR spectra in C60 superconductors : Hyperfine coupling constants, electronic correlation effect, and magnetic penetration depth

Abstract

A 13C-NMR anisotropic hyperfine coupling tensor was determined as 2π(-1.68, -1.68, 3.37)×106 rad/sec for C603- in A3C60 superconductors, where A is an alkali metal, by analyzing 13C-NMR spectra below 85 K. Combined with an isotropic coupling constant of (2π×0.69)×106 rad/sec, the 2s and 2p characters of the electronic wave functions at the Fermi level were deduced. The results were compatible with local-density-approximation band calculations. From a simulation of 13C-NMR spectra at superconducting state, the traceless chemical (orbital) shift tensor and isotropic chemical shift were determined as (67, 34, -101) ppm and ∼150 ppm, respectively. An estimated magnetic penetration depth is larger than 570 nm in K3C60. Furthermore, the modified Korringa relation, T1TK2∼βS (with Knight shift K, spin-lattice relaxation time T1, and Korringa constant S), clearly showed the existence of weak but substantial antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation in A3C60; β=0.40–0.58 with an error of ±20%.0 The Stoner enhancement factor was also determined as 1–1.5 from a comparison between spin susceptibility obtained from NMR and band-calculation results.

Abstract

The specific heat of Mn3−xFexSi was measured over a wide temperature range. Aside from the lattice and electronic specific heat components, another component had a significant contribution to the specific heat at low temperatures in the case of x = 0.2; however, its contribution decreased when x = 1.0. It is observed that the net component was retained at temperatures significantly higher than TN for both x. The XAFS spectra of the Mn K-edge for x = 0 not only indicated a smooth structure near the edge, but also an unusually small amplitude in the extended high energy region; however, these features disappeared with Fe doping. The specific heat and XAFS data were discussed in terms of the charge degree of freedom or electronic inhomogeneity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The celiac and mesenteric arterial system including the left gastric, splenic, common hepatic, and superior mesenteric arteries shows various types of origins, courses, ramifications and anastomoses. In order to explain the various expressions of this system, we have proposed a typological model, in which celiacomesenteric arteries develop as paired or bilaterally symmetrical primordial vessels originated from the anterior aspect of the aorta, and these vessels anastomose each other with longitudinal and horizontal pathways. Here, we report 3 unusual cases characterized by arterial rings, formed by the left gastric, left accessory hepatic, proper hepatic, anterior pancreaticoduodenal, and dorsal pancreatic arteries. The dorsal pancreatic and anterior pancreaticoduodenal arteries are located to the right and left of the embryonic pancreas developing in the dorsal mesentery, respectively. Such hepatopancreatic arterial rings simultaneously containing right and left elements can only be explained using our typological model, in which the concept of paired arteries or bilateral symmetry is introduced.

29. 13C NMR and static magnetic susceptibility in C60 superconductors : Possible influence of Kondo impurity

Abstract

The static spin susceptibility, χsSQ and χsNMR, in C60 superconductors K3C60 and Rb3C60 was studied using a dc superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer and 13C NMR. We found that χsSQ has a peculiar temperature (T) dependence behaving as (1-CT2) with a positive constant C∼(1×10-6) deg-2, contrary to the almost T independent χsNMR. These observations indicate a possibility that there exist Kondo-like impurities, whose Kondo temperature is ∼500 K and whose content is ∼0.001 spins per carbon. On the basis of these studies, the lattice constant dependence of the intrinsic spin susceptibility was established to be dχs/da0=(5.7±0.4)×10-4 emu/mol C60/Å in A3C60 superconductors where A is an alkali metal.

36. Time-domain sensitivity enhancement in pulsed Pb-TDL gas monitors

Abstract

A Pb-salt tunable diode laser (TDL) has found many applications in the field of atmospheric gas analysis. Its continuous tunablility and fine spectral purity in the mid infrared region are outstanding from other lasers. The only shortcoming is that it requires cryogenic operating temperatures, though, it is improved year by year towards the room temperature operation. A repeated pulse operation of Pb salt diode lasers is possible with a thermoelectric cooling device, which allows an instrument a portable geometry disusing a heavy, bulky and power consuming mechanical refrigerator. A derivative spectrometry was exploiting the quick tunability of Pb salt diode lasers, though they are continuous wave (cw) operated with refrigerator or liquid nitrogen so far. A new system for derivative spectrometry with a pulsed diode laser will extend its field of applications because of reduced weights and size of measuring instruments. A preliminary results is shown that demonstrates the feasibility of an attempt to implement the derivative spectrmetry with repeatedly pulse driven diode lasers. Atmospheric methane was measured with 8 ppm/m sensitivity. Further results of parametric optimization for the best signal to noise ratios under any given device characteristics as well as for available real devices is given.
