In this work, the results from the electron beam welding of copper and Al6082T6 aluminum alloy with a titanium filler are presented. The influence of the filler on the structure and mechanical properties of the welded joint is studied in comparison with one without filler. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) method was used to obtain the phase composition of the welded joints. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for the study of the microstructure of the welds. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was applied to investigate the chemical composition. The mechanical properties were studied by means of microhardness measurements and tensile tests. A three-phase structure was obtained in the fusion zone consisting of an aluminum matrix, an intermetallic compound CuAl2, and pure copper. The application of Ti filler significantly decreased the amount of molten copper introduced in the molten pool and the number of intermetallic compounds (IMCs). This improved the strength of the joint; however, some quantity of IMCs was still present in the zone of fusion (FZ), which reflected the microhardness of the samples. The application of a titanium filler resulted in refining the electron beam weld's structure. The finer structure and the reduced amount of the brittle intermetallic phases has led to an increase in the strength of the joint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this investigation, a duplex surface modification of M2 high-speed steel (HSS) was demonstrated, including electron beam treatment (EBT) followed by a tungsten nitride (WN) coating deposition. The influence of the EBT of the substrate on the functional properties of the film was also studied. The phase composition of the EBT sample consists of Fe (the main element in the M2 HSS), as well as MC and M6C carbides, while the phase composition of the EBT + WN sample consists of the α'-Fe, M6C, and WN phases. The depth of the treated zone is about 20 μm, and the thickness of the WN coating is about 300 nm in all cases. The hardness of the coating deposited on the EBT substrate is 12.4 GPa, while that of the WN film deposited on the untreated substrate is 8.8 GPa. The application of the electron beam treatment procedure and deposition of WN film leads to an improvement in the tribological properties where the coefficient of friction decreases from 0.81 to 0.66. However, the same coating deposited on untreated substrate exhibits even less friction coefficient values of 0.54. The applied modification technique suggests that this is a viable method for improving the mechanical and tribological properties of the surface of tool steels and, thus, their longevity and applicability. In the present work, we present results on the influence of electron beam surface modification on the resistance to plastic deformation and plasticity of Inconel alloy 625. During the treatment procedure, the electron beam currents were 10 and 20 mA, corresponding to beam powers of 600 W and 1200 W. The structures of the modified specimens were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The nanohardness and Young's modulus were studied through nanoindentation experiments. The plasticity of the treated materials as well as of the untreated ones was studied through an evaluation of H3/E2, which points to resistance to plastic deformation. The results obtained show that the electron beam surface modification procedure leads to a reorientation of microvolumes and the formation of a preferred crystallographic orientation. The surface treatment of the samples using an electron beam with a power of 600 W did not lead to major changes in the structures of the samples. However, the use of a beam with a power of 1200 W led to the formation of a clearly separated modified zone with a thickness in the range of 13 to 15 μm. The Young's modulus increased from about 100 to 153 GPa in the case of electron beam surface modification using the lower-power electron beam. The application of the higher-power electron beam did not lead to a significant change in the modulus of elasticity as compared to the untreated specimen. Also, it was found that the treatment procedure pointed to a decrease in nanohardness when the maximum power of the electron beam was applied. The resistance to plastic deformation, i.e., the H3/E2 ratio, showed that the ratio decreased significantly in both cases of electron beam surface modification, pointing to an improvement in the plasticity of the surface of the Inconel alloy 625. This work presents the results of an investigation into the influence of beam offset on the structure and mechanical properties of electron-beam-welded joints between Ti6Al4V and Al6082-T6 alloys. The experimental procedure involved the use of specific technological conditions: an accelerating voltage of 60 kV, an electron beam current of 35 mA, a specimen motion speed of 10 mm/s, and a beam offset of 0.5 mm towards both alloys, as well as welding without an offset. The phase composition of the joints was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure and chemical composition of the seams were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The results obtained for the structure of the joints show that the beam offset has a significant influence on the structure. The microhardness was studied by means of the Vickers method. The results for the microstructure showed that the welding procedure without offset and with an offset towards the Ti alloy leads to inhomogeneous welded joints with a significant amount of intermetallics. The offset towards the Al alloy leads to the formation of a narrow area of TiAl3 phase. The measured microhardness corresponds to the increased amount of intermetallics in the case of offset towards the Ti alloy, with which the highest values were presented (about 58% higher than with Ti6Al4V plate). The results obtained for tensile properties show that the offset to the Al6082-T6 alloy leads to the highest values of tensile strength (TS) and yield strength (YS), which are twice higher than in welding without offsetting of the electron beam. This work presents the results of the electron-beam welding of commercially pure α-Ti (CP-Ti) and Ti6Al4V (Ti64) alloys. The structure and mechanical properties of the formed welded joints were examined as a function of the power of the electron beam. The beam power was set to P1 = 2100 W, P2 = 1500 W, and P3 = 900 W, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were performed in order to investigate the phase composition of the fabricated welded joints. The microstructure was examined by both optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The mechanical properties of the formed joints were studied using tensile test experiments and microhardness experiments. The results of the experiments were discussed concerning the influence of the beam power on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the weld joints. Furthermore, the practical applicability of the present method for the welding of α-Ti and Ti64 was also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
