The `odd cover number' of a complete graph is the smallest size of a family of complete bipartite graphs that covers each edge an odd number of times. For $n$ odd, Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is equal to $(n+1)/2$ or $(n+3)/2$, and they conjectured that it is always $(n+1)/2$. We prove this conjecture. For $n$ even, Babai and Frankl showed that the odd cover number of $K_n$ is always at least $n/2$, and the above authors and Radhakrishnan, Sen and Vishwanathan gave some values of $n$ for which equality holds. We give some new examples. Our constructions arise from some very symmetric constructions for the corresponding problem for complete hypergraphs. Thus the odd cover number of the complete 3-graph $K_n^{(3)}$ is the smallest number of complete 3-partite 3-graphs such that each 3-set is in an odd number of them. We show that the odd cover number of $K_n^{(3)}$ is exactly $n/2$ for even $n$, and we show that for odd $n$ it is $(n-1)/2$ for infinitely many values of $n$. We also show that for $r=3$ and $r=4$ the odd cover number of $K_n^{(r)}$ is strictly less than the partition number, answering a question of Buchanan, Clifton, Culver, Nie, O'Neill, Rombach and Yin for those values of $r$., Comment: 7 pages

Fern\'andez-Bret\'on, Sarmiento and Vera showed that whenever a direct sum of sufficiently many copies of ${\mathbb Z}_4$, the cyclic group of order 4, is countably coloured there are arbitrarily large finite sets $X$ whose sumsets $X+X$ are monochromatic. They asked if the elements of order 4 are necessary, in the following strong sense: if $G$ is an abelian group having no elements of order 4, is it always the case there there is a countable colouring of $G$ for which there is not even a monochromatic sumset $X+X$ with $X$ of size 2? Our aim in this short note is to show that this is indeed the case.

A set $X$ is called Euclidean Ramsey if, for any $k$ and sufficiently large $n$, every $k$-colouring of $\mathbb{R}^n$ contains a monochromatic congruent copy of $X$. This notion was introduced by Erd\H{o}s, Graham, Montgomery, Rothschild, Spencer and Straus. They asked if a set is Ramsey if and only if it is spherical, meaning that it lies on the surface of a sphere. It is not too difficult to show that if a set is not spherical then it is not Euclidean Ramsey either, but the converse is very much open despite extensive research over the years. On the other hand, the block sets conjecture is a purely combinatorial, Hales-Jewett type of statement, concerning `blocks in large products', introduced by Leader, Russell and Walters. If true, the block sets conjecture would imply that every transitive set (a set whose symmetry group acts transitively) is Euclidean Ramsey. As for the question above, the block sets conjecture remains very elusive, being known only in a few cases. In this paper we show that the sizes of the blocks in the block sets conjecture cannot be bounded, even for templates over the alphabet of size $3$. We also show that for the first non-trivial template, namely $123$, the blocks may be taken to be of size $2$ (for any number of colours). A subgraph of the $n$-dimensional hypercube is called 'layered' if it is a subgraph of a layer of some hypercube. In this paper we show that there exist subgraphs of the cube of arbitrarily large girth that are not layered. This answers a question of Axenovich, Martin and Winter. Perhaps surprisingly, these subgraphs may even be taken to be induced., Comment: 11 pages

An $r$-daisy is an $r$-uniform hypergraph consisting of the six $r$-sets formed by taking the union of an $(r-2)$-set with each of the 2-sets of a disjoint 4-set. Bollob\'as, Leader and Malvenuto, and also Bukh, conjectured that the Tur\'an density of the $r$-daisy tends to zero as $r \to \infty$. In this paper we disprove this conjecture. Adapting our construction, we are also able to disprove a folklore conjecture about Tur\'an densities of hypercubes. For fixed $d$ and large $n$, we show that the smallest set of vertices of the $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_n$ that meets every copy of $Q_d$ has asymptotic density strictly below $1/(d+1)$, for all $d \geq 8$. In fact, we show that this asymptotic density is at most $c^d$, for some constant $c<1$. As a consequence, we obtain similar bounds for the edge-Tur\'an densities of hypercubes. We also answer some related questions of Johnson and Talbot, and disprove a conjecture made by Bukh and by Griggs and Lu on poset densities., Comment: 14 pages. How many graphs on an $n$-point set can we find such that any two have connected intersection? Berger, Berkowitz, Devlin, Doppelt, Durham, Murthy and Vemuri showed that the maximum is exactly $1/2^{n-1}$ of all graphs. Our aim in this short note is to give a 'directed' version of this result; we show that a family of oriented graphs such that any two have strongly-connected intersection has size at most $1/3^n$ of all oriented graphs. We also show that a family of graphs such that any two have Hamiltonian intersection has size at most $1/2^n$ of all graphs, verifying a conjecture of the above authors., Comment: 5 pages

Suppose that $A$ and $B$ are sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and we form the sumset of $A$ with $n$ random points of $B$. Given the volumes of $A$ and $B$, how should we choose them to minimize the expected volume of this sumset? Our aim in this paper is to show that we should take $A$ and $B$ to be Euclidean balls. We also consider the analogous question in the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$, and we show that in this case the optimal choices of $A$ and $B$ are bands, in other words, sets of the form $[x,y]\times\mathbb{T}^{d-1}$. We also give stability versions of our results.

What is the smallest number of random transpositions (meaning that we swap given pairs of elements with given probabilities) that we can make on an $n$-point set to ensure that each element is uniformly distributed -- in the sense that the probability that $i$ is mapped to $j$ is $1/n$ for all $i$ and $j$? And what if we insist that each pair is uniformly distributed? In this paper we show that the minimum for the first problem is about $\frac{1}{2} n \log_2 n$, with this being exact when $n$ is a power of $2$. For the second problem, we show that, rather surprisingly, the answer is not quadratic: $O(n \log^2 n)$ random transpositions suffice. We also show that if we ask only that the pair $1,2$ is uniformly distributed then the answer is $2n-3$. This proves a conjecture of Groenland, Johnston, Radcliffe and Scott., Comment: 15 pages

Our aim in this paper is to show that, for any $k$, there is a finite colouring of the set of rationals whose denominators contain only the first $k$ primes such that no infinite set has all of its finite sums and products monochromatic. We actually prove a `uniform' form of this: there is a finite colouring of the rationals with the property that no infinite set whose denominators contain only finitely many primes has all of its finite sums and products monochromatic. We also give various other results, including a new short proof of the old result that there is a finite colouring of the naturals such that no infinite set has all of its pairwise sums and products monochromatic., Comment: 17 pages

The classical Cauchy--Davenport inequality gives a lower bound for the size of the sum of two subsets of ${\mathbb Z}_p$, where $p$ is a prime. Our main aim in this paper is to prove a considerable strengthening of this inequality, where we take only a small number of points from each of the two subsets when forming the sum. One of our results is that there is an absolute constant $c>0$ such that if $A$ and $B$ are subsets of ${\mathbb Z}_p$ with $|A|=|B|=n\le p/3$ then there are subsets $A'\subset A$ and $B'\subset B$ with $|A'|=|B'|\le c \sqrt{n}$ such that $|A'+B'|\ge 2n-1$. In fact, we show that one may take any sizes one likes: as long as $c_1$ and $c_2$ satisfy $c_1c_2 \ge cn$ then we may choose $|A'|=c_1$ and $|B'|=c_2$. We prove related results for general abelian groups.

In its usual form, Freiman's 3k-4 theorem states that if A and B are subsets of the integers of size k with small sumset (of size close to 2k) then they are very close to arithmetic progressions. Our aim in this paper is to strengthen this by allowing only a bounded number of possible summands from one of the sets. We show that if A and B are subsets of the integers of size k such that for any four-element subset X of B the sumset A+X has size not much more than 2k then already this implies that A and B are very close to arithmetic progressions.

In this paper we start to investigate a new body of questions in additive combinatorics. The fundamental Cauchy--Davenport theorem gives a lower bound on the size of a sumset A+B for subsets of the cyclic group Zp of order p (p prime), and this is just one example of a large family of results. Our aim in this paper is to investigate what happens if we restrict the number of elements of one set that we may use to form the sums. Here is the question we set out to answer: given two subsets, A and B, does B have a subset C of bounded size such that A+C is large, perhaps even comparable to the size of A+B? In particular, can we get close to the lower bound of the Cauchy--Davenport theorem? Our main results show that, rather surprisingly, in many circumstances it is possible to obtain not merely an asymptotic version of the usual sumset bound, but even the exact bound itself., Comment: Revised version

A (finite or infinite) graph is called constructible if it may be obtained recursively from the one-point graph by repeatedly adding dominated vertices. In the finite case, the constructible graphs are precisely the cop-win graphs, but for infinite graphs the situation is not well understood. One of our aims in this paper is to give a graph that is cop-win but not constructible. This is the first known such example. We also show that every countable ordinal arises as the rank of some constructible graph, answering a question of Evron, Solomon and Stahl. In addition, we give a finite constructible graph for which there is no construction order whose associated domination map is a homomorphism, answering a question of Chastand, Laviolette and Polat. Lehner showed that every constructible graph is a weak cop win (meaning that the cop can eventually force the robber out of any finite set). Our other main aim is to investigate how this notion relates to the notion of `locally constructible' (every finite graph is contained in a finite constructible subgraph). We show that, under mild extra conditions, every locally constructible graph is a weak cop win. But we also give an example to show that, in general, a locally constructible graph need not be a weak cop win. Surprisingly, this graph may even be chosen to be locally finite. Our aim in this note is to show that, for any $\epsilon>0$, there exists a union-closed family $\mathcal F$ with (unique) smallest set $S$ such that no element of $S$ belongs to more than a fraction $\epsilon$ of the sets in $\mathcal F$. More precisely, we give an example of a union-closed family with smallest set of size $k$ such that no element of this set belongs to more than a fraction $(1+o(1))\frac{\log_2 k}{2k}$ of the sets in $\mathcal F$. We also give explicit examples of union-closed families containing `small' sets for which we have been unable to verify the Union-Closed Conjecture., Comment: 5 pages

A factorisation $x = u_1 u_2 \cdots$ of an infinite word $x$ on alphabet $X$ is called `monochromatic', for a given colouring of the finite words $X^*$ on alphabet $X$, if each $u_i$ is the same colour. Wojcik and Zamboni proved that the word $x$ is periodic if and only if for every finite colouring of $X^*$ there is a monochromatic factorisation of $x$. On the other hand, it follows from Ramsey's theorem that, for \textit{any} word $x$, for every finite colouring of $X^*$ there is a suffix of $x$ having a monochromatic factorisation. A factorisation $x = u_1 u_2 \cdots$ is called `super-monochromatic' if each word $u_{k_1} u_{k_2} \cdots u_{k_n}$, where $k_1 < \cdots < k_n$, is the same colour. Our aim in this paper is to show that a word $x$ is eventually periodic if and only if for every finite colouring of $X^*$ there is a suffix of $x$ having a super-monochromatic factorisation. We show that there exists an absolute constant $C>0$ such that any family $\mathcal{F}\subset \{0,1\}^n$ of size at least $Cn^3$ has dual VC-dimension at least 3. Equivalently, every family of size at least $Cn^3$ contains three sets such that all eight regions of their Venn diagram are non-empty. This improves upon the $Cn^{3.75}$ bound of Gupta, Lee and Li and is sharp up to the value of the constant., Comment: 11 pages

In this paper we study the following geometric problem: given $2^n-1$ real numbers $x_A$ indexed by the non-empty subsets $A\subset \{1,..,n\}$, is it possible to construct a body $T\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ such that $x_A=|T_A|$ where $|T_A|$ is the $|A|$-dimensional volume of the projection of $T$ onto the subspace spanned by the axes in $A$? As it is more convenient to take logarithms we denote by $\psi_n$ the set of all vectors $x$ for which there is a body $T$ such that $x_A=\log |T_A|$ for all $A$. Bollob\'as and Thomason showed that $\psi_n$ is contained in the polyhedral cone defined by the class of `uniform cover inequalities'. Tan and Zeng conjectured that the convex hull $\DeclareMathOperator{\conv}{conv}$ $\conv(\psi_n)$ is equal to the cone given by the uniform cover inequalities. We prove that this conjecture is `nearly' right: the closed convex hull $\overline{\conv}(\psi_n)$ is equal to the cone given by the uniform cover inequalities. However, perhaps surprisingly, we also show that $\conv (\psi_n)$ is not closed for $n\ge 4$, thus disproving the conjecture., Comment: 11 pages

In this note we investigate correlation inequalities for `up-sets' of permutations, in the spirit of the Harris--Kleitman inequality. We focus on two well-studied partial orders on $S_n$, giving rise to differing notions of up-sets. Our first result shows that, under the strong Bruhat order on $S_n$, up-sets are positively correlated (in the Harris--Kleitman sense). Thus, for example, for a (uniformly) random permutation $\pi$, the event that no point is displaced by more than a fixed distance $d$ and the event that $\pi$ is the product of at most $k$ adjacent transpositions are positively correlated. In contrast, under the weak Bruhat order we show that this completely fails: surprisingly, there are two up-sets each of measure $1/2$ whose intersection has arbitrarily small measure. We say that the system of equations $Ax=b$, where $A$ is an integer matrix and $b$ is a (non-zero) integer vector, is partition regular if whenever the integers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector $x$ with $Ax=b$. Rado proved that the system $Ax=b$ is partition regular if and only if it has a constant solution. Byszewski and Krawczyk asked if this remains true when the integers are replaced by a general ring $R$. Our aim in this note is to answer this question in the affirmative. The main ingredient is a new `direct' proof of Rado's result.

The Hales-Jewett theorem for alphabet of size 3 states that whenever the Hales-Jewett cube [3]^n is r-coloured there is a monochromatic line (for n large). Conlon and Kamcev conjectured that, for any n, there is a 2-colouring of [3]^n for which there is no monochromatic line whose active coordinate set is an interval. In this note we disprove this conjecture.

N. Hindman, I. Leader and D. Strauss proved that it is consistent that there is a finite colouring of $\mathbb R$ so that no infinite sumset $X+X=\{x+y:x,y\in X\}$ is monochromatic. How large an antichain can we find inside a given downset in the lattice of subsets of [n]? Sperner's theorem asserts that the largest antichain in the whole lattice has size the binomial coefficient C(n, n/2); what happens for general downsets? Our main results are a Dilworth-type decomposition theorem for downsets, and a new proof of a result of Engel and Leck that determines the largest possible antichain size over all downsets of a given size. We also prove some related results, such as determining the maximum size of an antichain inside the downset that we conjecture minimizes this quantity among downsets of a given size., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

For a fixed $r$, let $f_r(n)$ denote the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-graphs needed to partition the complete $r$-graph on $n$ vertices. The Graham-Pollak theorem asserts that $f_2(n)=n-1$. An easy construction shows that $f_r(n) \leq (1+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2 \rfloor}$, and we write $c_r$ for the least number such that $f_r(n) \leq c_r (1+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2 \rfloor}$. It was known that $c_r < 1$ for each even $r \geq 4$, but this was not known for any odd value of $r$. In this short note, we prove that $c_{295}<1$. Our method also shows that $c_r \rightarrow 0$, answering another open problem.

We show that there is a rational vector space $V$ such that, whenever $V$ is finitely coloured, there is an infinite set $X$ whose sumset $X+X$ is monochromatic. Our example is the rational vector space of dimension $\sup\{\aleph_0,2^{\aleph_0},2^{2^{\aleph_0}},\ldots\,\}$. This complements a result of Hindman, Leader and Strauss, who showed that the result does not hold for dimension below $\aleph_\omega$. So our result is best possible under GCH.

Let $f_r(n)$ be the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-graphs needed to partition the edge set of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices. Graham and Pollak showed that $f_2(n) = n-1$. An easy construction shows that $f_r(n)\le (1-o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor r/2\rfloor}$ and it has been unknown if this upper bound is asymptotically sharp. In this paper we show that $f_r(n)\le (\frac{14}{15}+o(1))\binom{n}{r/2}$ for each even $r\ge 4$.

A family of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is said to be {\em antipodal} if it is closed under taking complements. We prove a best-possible isoperimetric inequality for antipodal families of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Our inequality implies that for any $k \in \mathbb{N}$, among all such families of size $2^k$, a family consisting of the union of a $(k-1)$-dimensional subcube and its antipode has the smallest possible edge boundary., Comment: A new proof of Lemma 6 (kindly suggested by an anonymous referee) has been given; this shortens our original argument. A matrix A is image partition regular over Q provided that whenever Q - {0} is finitely coloured, there is a vector x with entries in Q - {0} such that the entries of Ax are monochromatic. It is kernel partition regular over Q provided that whenever Q - {0} is finitely coloured, the matrix has a monochromatic member of its kernel. We establish a duality for these notions valid for both finite and infinite matrices. We also investigate the extent to which this duality holds for matrices partition regular over proper subsemigroups of Q.

Let $P$ be a poset of size $2^k$ that has a greatest and a least element. We prove that, for sufficiently large $n$, the Boolean lattice $2^{[n]}$ can be partitioned into copies of $P$. This resolves a conjecture of Lonc., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

Positional games are a well-studied class of combinatorial game. In their usual form, two players take turns to play moves in a set (`the board'), and certain subsets are designated as `winning': the first person to occupy such a set wins the game. For these games, it is well known that (with correct play) the game cannot be a second-player win. In the avoidance (or mis\`{e}re) form, the first person to occupy such a set \emph{loses} the game. Here it would be natural to expect that the game cannot be a first-player win, at least if the game is transitive, meaning that all points of the board look the same. Our main result is that, contrary to this expectation, there are transitive games that are first-player wins, for all board sizes which are not prime or a power of 2. Further, we show that such games can have additional properties such as stronger transitivity conditions, fast winning times, and `small' winning sets., Comment: 27 pages

Let $T$ be a tile in $\mathbb{Z}^n$, meaning a finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^n$. It may or may not tile $\mathbb{Z}^n$, in the sense of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ having a partition into copies of $T$. Suppose that we have a finite colouring of the reals. What sumset-type structures can we hope to find in some colour class? One of our aims is to show that there is such a colouring for which no uncountable set has all of its pairwise sums monochromatic. We also show that there is such a colouring such that there is no infinite set X with X+X (the pairwise sums from X, allowing repetition) monochromatic. These results assume CH. In the other direction, we show that if each colour class is measurable, or each colour class is Baire, then there is an infinite set X (and even an uncountable X, of size the reals) with X+X monochromatic. We also give versions for all of these results for k-wise sums in place of pairwise sums.

We consider the following question. Suppose that $d\ge2$ and $n$ are fixed, and that $\theta_1,\theta_2,\dots,\theta_n$ are $n$ specified angles. How many points do we need to place in $\mathbb{R}^d$ to realise all of these angles? A simple degrees of freedom argument shows that $m$ points in $\mathbb{R}^2$ cannot realise more than $2m-4$ general angles. We give a construction to show that this bound is sharp when $m\ge 5$. In $d$ dimensions the degrees of freedom argument gives an upper bound of $dm-\binom{d+1}{2}-1$ general angles. However, the above result does not generalise to this case; surprisingly, the bound of $2m-4$ from two dimensions cannot be improved at all. Indeed, our main result is that there are sets of $2m-3$ of angles that cannot be realised by $m$ points in any dimension.

An oriented 3-graph consists of a family of triples (3-sets), each of which is given one of its two possible cyclic orientations. A cycle in an oriented 3-graph is a positive sum of some of the triples that gives weight zero to each 2-set. Our aim in this paper is to consider the following question: how large can the girth of an oriented 3-graph (on $n$ vertices) be? We show that there exist oriented 3-graphs whose shortest cycle has length $\frac{n^2}{2}(1+o(1))$: this is asymptotically best possible. We also show that there exist 3-tournaments whose shortest cycle has length $\frac{n^2}{3}(1+o(1))$, in complete contrast to the case of 2-tournaments., Comment: 12 pages

A finite or infinite matrix $A$ with rational entries (and only finitely many non-zero entries in each row) is called image partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, there is a vector $x$, with entries in the natural numbers, such that $Ax$ is monochromatic. Many of the classical results of Ramsey theory are naturally stated in terms of image partition regularity. Our aim in this paper is to investigate maximality questions for image partition regular matrices. When is it possible to add rows on to $A$ and remain image partition regular? When can one add rows but `nothing new is produced'? What about adding rows and also new variables? We prove some results about extensions of the most interesting infinite systems, and make several conjectures. Perhaps our most surprising positive result is a compatibility result for Milliken-Taylor systems, stating that (in many cases) one may adjoin one Milliken-Taylor system to a translate of another and remain image partition regular. This is in contrast to earlier results, which had suggested a strong inconsistency between different Milliken-Taylor systems. Our main tools for this are some algebraic properties of the $\beta N$, the Stone-Cech compactification of the natural numbers.

A system of linear equations with integer coefficients is partition regular over a subset S of the reals if, whenever S\{0} is finitely coloured, there is a solution to the system contained in one colour class. It has been known for some time that there is an infinite system of linear equations that is partition regular over R but not over Q, and it was recently shown (answering a long-standing open question) that one can also distinguish Q from Z in this way. Our aim is to show that the transition from Z to Q is not sharp: there is an infinite chain of subgroups of Q, each of which has a system that is partition regular over it but not over its predecessors. We actually prove something stronger: our main result is that if R and S are subrings of Q with R not contained in S, then there is a system that is partition regular over R but not over S. This implies, for example, that the chain above may be taken to be uncountable., Comment: 14 pages

Gallai's colouring theorem states that if the edges of a complete graph are 3-coloured, with each colour class forming a connected (spanning) subgraph, then there is a triangle that has all 3 colours. What happens for more colours: if we $k$-colour the edges of the complete graph, with each colour class connected, how many of the $\binom{k}{3}$ triples of colours must appear as triangles? In this note we show that the `obvious' conjecture, namely that there are always at least $\binom{k-1}{2}$ triples, is not correct. We determine the minimum asymptotically. This answers a question of Johnson. We also give some results about the analogous problem for hypergraphs, and we make a conjecture that we believe is the `right' generalisation of Gallai's theorem to hypergraphs., Comment: Conjecture 3.5 is removed

A finite or infinite matrix A with rational entries is called partition regular if whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector x with Ax=0. Many of the classical theorems of Ramsey Theory may naturally be interpreted as assertions that particular matrices are partition regular. In the finite case, Rado proved that a matrix is partition regular if and only it satisfies a computable condition known as the columns property. The first requirement of the columns property is that some set of columns sums to zero. In the infinite case, much less is known. There are many examples of matrices with the columns property that are not partition regular, but until now all known examples of partition regular matrices did have the columns property. Our main aim in this paper is to show that, perhaps surprisingly, there are infinite partition regular matrices without the columns property --- in fact, having no set of columns summing to zero. We also make a conjecture that if a partition regular matrix (say with integer coefficients) has bounded row sums then it must have the columns property, and prove a first step towards this., Comment: 13 pages

The purpose of this short problem paper is to raise an extremal question on set systems which seems to be natural and appealing. Our question is: which set systems of a given size maximise the number of $(n+1)$-element chains in the power set $\mathcal{P}(\{1,2,\dots,n\})$? We will show that for each fixed $\alpha>0$ there is a family of $\alpha 2^n$ sets containing $(\alpha+o(1))n!$ such chains, and that this is asymptotically best possible. For smaller set systems we are unable to answer the question. We conjecture that a `tower of cubes' construction is extremal. We finish by mentioning briefly a connection to an extremal problem on posets and a variant of our question for the grid graph., Comment: 5 pages

Let $A$ be a finite matrix with rational entries. We say that $A$ is {\it doubly image partition regular\/} if whenever the set ${\mathbb N}$ of positive integers is finitely coloured, there exists $\vec x$ such that the entries of $A\vec x$ are all the same colour (or {\it monochromatic\/}) and also, the entries of $\vec x$ are monochromatic. Which matrices are doubly image partition regular? More generally, we say that a pair of matrices $(A,B)$, where $A$ and $B$ have the same number of rows, is {\it doubly kernel partition regular\/} if whenever ${\mathbb N}$ is finitely coloured, there exist vectors $\vec x$ and $\vec y$, each monochromatic, such that $A \vec x + B \vec y = 0$. There is an obvious sufficient condition for the pair $(A,B)$ to be doubly kernel partition regular, namely that there exists a positive rational $c$ such that the matrix $M=(\begin{array}{ccccc}A&cB\end{array})$ is kernel partition regular. (That is, whenever ${\mathbb N}$ is finitely coloured, there exists monochromatic $\vec x$ such that $M \vec x=\vec 0$.) Our aim in this paper is to show that this sufficient condition is also necessary. As a consequence we have that a matrix $A$ is doubly image partition regular if and only if there is a positive rational $c$ such that the matrix $(\begin{array}{lr}A&cI\end{array})$ is kernel partition regular, where $I$ is the identity matrix of the appropriate size. We also prove extensions to the case of several matrices.

How large can a family \cal A \subset \cal P [n] be if it does not contain A,B with |A\setminus B| = 1? Our aim in this paper is to show that any such family has size at most \frac{2+o(1)}{n} \binom {n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor }. This is tight up to a multiplicative constant of $2$. We also obtain similar results for families \cal A \subset \cal P[n] with |A\setminus B| \neq k, showing that they satisfy |{\mathcal A}| \leq \frac{C_k}{n^k}\binom {n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor }, where C_k is a constant depending only on k., Comment: 8 pages. An infinite integer matrix A is called image partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, there is an integer vector x such that Ax is monochromatic. Given an image partition regular matrix A, can we also insist that each variable x_i is a multiple of some given d_i? This is a question of Hindman, Leader and Strauss. Our aim in this short note is to show that the answer is negative. As an application, we disprove a conjectured equivalence between the two main forms of partition regularity, namely image partition regularity and kernel partition regularity., Comment: 5 pages

A path in the hypercube $Q_n$ is said to be a geodesic if no two of its edges are in the same direction. Let $G$ be a subgraph of $Q_n$ with average degree $d$. How long a geodesic must $G$ contain? We show that $G$ must contain a geodesic of length $d$. This result, which is best possible, strengthens a theorem of Feder and Subi. A system of homogeneous linear equations with integer coefficients is partition regular if, whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured, the system has a monochromatic solution. The Finite Sums theorem provided the first example of an infinite partition regular system of equations. Since then, other such systems of equations have been found, but each can be viewed as a modification of the Finite Sums theorem. We present here a new infinite partition regular system of equations that appears to arise in a genuinely different way. This is the first example of a partition regular system in which a variable occurs with unbounded coefficients. A modification of the system provides an example of a system that is partition regular over Q but not N, settling another open problem., Comment: 11 pages
