The severity of extreme heat events paired with the urban heat island effect cannot be overstated, as the impacts are substantial and widespread, affecting peak energy demands, transport systems, air and water quality, and most notably causing heat-related illnesses and death. These consequences make evident the importance of reducing heat in urban areas and ensuring that urban populations are safe during extreme heat events. In order to both reduce the urban heat island effect and prepare cities for a hotter future, it is critical to building our understanding of the cities at risk and the relationship between heat and the urban environment. This thesis applies urban morphology theory and remote sensing techniques to explore how urban typologies in Metro Boston perform during an extreme heat event. Included within the thesis is a literature review exploring urban heat methodologies and urban morphology, a desktop review examining a set of cities’ climate action reports, and a remote sensing-based analysis to determine the feasibility of uniting land surface temperature and public weather station data. The desktop review of cities determined that while each city has begun to implement numerous socially driven initiatives and large-scale green infrastructure plans, there is little work incorporating urban form within these strategies. Additionally, while the land surface temperature and weather station maps from the remote sensing analysis were deemed insufficient, several valuable questions and findings arose through the process. The case study analysis of Metro Boston identified three predominant urban forms in the study area and 12 sites were studied in relation to their heat performance in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The heat maps applied were developed through Heat Watch Report, a collaboration between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the municipalities of Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge, and CAPA Strategies. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY  Pollinators interact with plants to underpin wider biodiversity, ecosystem function, ecosystem services to agricultural crops and ultimately human nutrition. The conservation of pollinators is thus an important goal.  Pollinators and pollination represent a tractable example of how biodiversity can be linked to an ecosystem service. This represents a case study for exploring the impacts of various policy instruments aiming to halt/reverse the loss of ecosystem services.  There is a need to understand how multiple pressures (e.g. habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation, climate change, pests and diseases, invasive species and environmental chemicals) can combine or interact to affect diversity, abundance and health of different pollinator groups.  Decision makers need to balance consideration of the effects of single pressures on pollinators against the suite of other pressures on pollinators. For instance, the threat from pesticide use (with its high public and media profile) also needs to be considered in the context of the other threats facing pollinators and balanced against the need for food security. An independent review of the balance of risks across pollinator groups from pesticide use would help synthesise current knowledge into an accessible form for decision makers.  To manage or lessen these threats to pollinators (wild and managed) and pollination requires improved knowledge about their basic ecology. We still need to know where and in what numbers different pollinator species occur, how they use different environments, how they interact with each other through shared plants and diseases and how wild pollinator abundance is changing.  Decision makers need clear factual evidence for i) the relative contribution of different managed and wild pollinator groups to wildflower and crop pollination and ii) how this varies across different land-uses, ecosystems and regions.  Addressing these basic and applied questions will improve

The 10th Symposium of the International Commission for Plant-Bee Relationships (ICPBR) Bee Protection Group was held on 8-10 October 2008 in Bucharest, Romania. A major part of this meeting was given over to a revision of the EPPO guideline 170 and the associated risk assessment scheme, which forms the basis of regulatory evaluations for the effects of pesticides on honey bees in the EU. While the current EU risk assessment scheme is considered to be robust and effective, such revisions are considered appropriate as part of an ongoing process of review and appropriate development. The revision process was based on reports presented by three working groups that had been set up at the 9th Symposium of the Bee Protection Group (York, UK; 2005). The three groups had addressed the following issues: (1) higher tier testing (cage and field trials); (2) the risk to bees from the use of plant protection products through seed coating and soil applications (systemic effects); (3) the risk to honey bee brood (including in vitro larval testing methodology). These proceedings present the current proposals for the revised EPPO honeybee testing guidelines and risk assessment scheme. These will be subject to a final review before being submitted to EPPO and also to EFSA for consideration as part of the revision of the Terrestrial Ecotoxicology Guidance Document. Background: Oral ibandronate is a single-nitrogen bisphosphonate whose efficacy is similar to that of IV ibandronate for the treatment of bone metastases. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the cost-effectiveness of oral ibandronate with zoledronic acid and generic pamidronate (both administered by IV) for the treatment of bone metastases in patients with breast cancer receiving oral hormonal therapy in the United Kingdom. Methods: A global economic model was adapted to the UK National Health Service. Patients were assumed to receive oral hormonal therapy for 50% of their projected 14.3-month survival. The primary outcome was incremental cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY). Bisphosphonate efficacy data for relative risk reduction of skeletal-related events (SREs) were obtained from clinical trials. Resource use data and costs associated with IV bisphosphonate infusions were derived from published studies and a unit cost database; monthly drug acquisition costs were obtained from the British National Formulary. Utility scores were applied to time with or without an SRE to adjust survival for quality of life. Therefore, differences in QALYs were driven by utility weights rather than survival time. Model design and inputs were validated through expert UK clinician review. The absence of comparative efficacy and safety data from clinical trials for the different bisphosphonates was a model limitation that we addressed by supporting our assumptions with UK expert clinician opinion and with expert clinician opinion outside of the United Kingdom, and by conducting sensitivity analyses. Results: The projected total cost per patient was £307 less with oral ibandronate compared with zoledronic acid, and £158 less compared with the use of generic pamidronate (due to a reduction in staff time for infusions, avoidance of renal safety monitoring visits, and, in the case of IV generic pamidronate, a reduction in the number of SREs).
