Mobile service robots employ vision systems to discern objects in their workspaces for navigation or object detection. The lighting conditions of the surroundings affect a robot's ability to discern and navigate in its work environment. Robot inclusivity principles can be used to determine the suitability of a site's lighting condition for robot performance. This paper proposes a novel framework for autonomously auditing the Robot Inclusivity Index of indoor environments based on the lighting condition (RII-lux). The framework considers the factors of light intensity and the presence of glare to define the RII-Lux of a particular location in an environment. The auditing framework is implemented on a robot to autonomously generate a heatmap visually representing the variation in RII-Lux of an environment. Abstract Background The current study compared optical quality before and after implantation of a posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens with a central hole [V4c implantable collamer lens (ICL)] under bright and dark lighting conditions by means of the Optical Quality Analysis System™ (OQAS; Visiometrics, Terrassa, Spain). Methods This prospective study involved 91 eyes of 46 consecutive high myopia patients (15 males and 31 females, average spherical equivalent − 10.50 ± 0.33D) undergoing implantation of a V4c ICL. The modulation transfer function (MTF) cutoff frequency, Strehl ratio, objective scattering index (OSI), and predicted visual acuities (PVAs; 100, 20, and 9%), under different lighting conditions, were measured before and 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery. Results All optical parameters showed significant improvements, at all time points, under dark condition after surgery. We observed no significant changes in PVA 9% at 1 week (mean value 0.539, P = 0.12) or 1 month after surgery (mean value 0.573, P = 0.08) under bright condition; but all other postoperative parameters improved significantly. Comparing the two lighting conditions, the OSI decreased more under dark conditions at 1 week (P = 0.02), 1 month (P = 0.004), and 3 months (P = 0.002), but there was no significant difference in any other parameter. In addition, patients were divided into super high myopia (group S, spherical equivalent greater than − 10 D) and high myopia (group H, spherical equivalent from − 6 D to − 10 D), the group S improved significantly more than group H in all parameters, under both bright and dark conditions. Conclusions V4c ICL implantation improved optical quality under both bright and dark lighting conditions, and had a better ability to reduce the extent of scattering in the dark. Furthermore, group S achieved greater improvement in visual quality, which should be considered by physicians before surgery.

A realistically inserted virtual object in the real-time physical environment is a desirable feature in augmented reality (AR) applications and mixed reality (MR) in general. This problem is considered a vital research area in computer graphics, a field that is experiencing ongoing discovery. The algorithms and methods used to obtain dynamic and real-time illumination measurement, estimating, and rendering of augmented reality scenes are utilized in many applications to achieve a realistic perception by humans. We cannot deny the powerful impact of the continuous development of computer vision and machine learning techniques accompanied by the original computer graphics and image processing methods to provide a significant range of novel AR/MR techniques. These techniques include methods for light source acquisition through image-based lighting or sampling, registering and estimating the lighting conditions, and composition of global illumination. In this review, we discussed the pipeline stages with the details elaborated about the methods and techniques that contributed to the development of providing a photo-realistic rendering, visual coherence, and interactive real-time illumination results in AR/MR. Facial expressions recognition (FER) is an important modality in the future assessing teaching skill system (ATS). The fundamental difference with FER is in its low resolution image, unique occlusion of veiled teachers, and varied lighting conditions. However, it is still able to solve the problem of variations in head poses. This study, overall, began with the collection of articles from Scopus, created the FER taxonomy class and mapped the use of datasets. After finding out which datasets were suitable for the image of expression in teaching, a deeper discussion about classifier-classifier (using the same CK+ dataset) was capable of solving problems (low resolution image, occlusion, variation in lighting conditions and head poses). Finally, from the discussion conducted, it is known the potential for modification of algorithms, appropriate datasets and research opportunities for future FER in ATS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study was conducted to test our hypothesis that intramuscular fat (IMF) accumulation increases in pigs fed on a low lysine diet during the dark period than those fed on the same diet during the light period. Using barrows aged 6 weeks, we monitored whether serum glucose and insulin levels were affected by light conditions. Two diets with different levels of lysine, 0.78% (LL diet) and 1.37% (control diet) were prepared. Eight pigs were fed on the diet during the light period, while the remaining pigs were fed during the dark period. The pigs were fed either the LL diet or the control diet. Although IMF contents of Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle were higher in the pigs fed on a LL diet (p < .05), the light conditions had no effect. Low dietary lysine caused reduction in serum glucose levels (p < .05) and serum insulin levels (p = .0613). However, they were also unaffected by the lighting conditions. To gain further insights, we determined the messenger RNA levels of insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrate 1, acetyl CoA carboxylase, and fatty acid synthase in LD and Rhomboideus muscles and in the liver. Light is essential for plant growth. Light intensity, photoperiod and light quality all affect plant morphology and physiology. Compared to light intensity, photoperiod, little is known about the effects of different monochromatic lights on crop species. To investigate how different lighting conditions influence crops with heterogeneous colors in leaves, we examined photosynthetic characteristics and quality (regarding edibility and nutrition) of purple cabbage under different combinations of lights. Eight different treatments were applied including monochromic red (R), monochromic blue (B), monochromic yellow (Y), monochromic green (G) and the combination of red and blue (3/1, RB)， red/blue/yellow (3/1/1, RBY)， red /blue/green (3/1/1,RBG) and white light as the control. Our results indicate that RBY (3/1/1) treatment promotes the PSII activity of purple cabbage, resulting in improved light energy utilization. By contrast, both G and Y lights alone have inhibitory effect on the PSII activity of purple cabbage. In addition, RBY (3/1/1) significantly boosts the anthocyanin and flavonoids content compared with other treatments. Although we detected highest soluble protein and vitamin C content under B treatment (increased by 29.99% and 14.29% compared with the control respectively), RBY (3/1/1) appeared to be the second-best lighting condition (with soluble protein and vitamin C content increased by 8.63% and 4.07% respectively compared with the control). Thus we prove that the addition of yellow light to the traditional combination of red/blue lighting conditions is beneficial to synthesizing photosynthetic pigments and enables superior outcome of purple cabbage growth. Our results indicate that the growth and nutritional quality of purple cabbage are greatly enhanced under RBY (3/1/1) light, and suggest that strategical management of lighting conditions holds promise in maximizing the economic efficiency of plant production and food quality of vegetables grown in controlled environments.

Introduction Many studies have examined different factors contributing to the injury severity of crashes; however, relatively few studies have focused on the crashes by considering the specific effects of lighting conditions. This research investigates lighting condition differences in the injury severity of crashes using 3-year (2009–2011) crash data of two-lane rural roads of the state of Washington. Method Separate ordered-probit models were developed to predict the effects of a set of factors expected to influence injury severity in three lighting conditions; daylight, dark, and dark with street lights. A series of likelihood ratio tests were conducted to determine if these lighting condition models were justified. Results The modeling results suggest that injury severity in specific lighting conditions are associated with contributing factors in different ways, and that such differences cannot be uncovered by focusing merely on one aggregate model. Key differences include crash location, speed limit, shoulder width, driver action, and three collision types (head-on, rear-end, and right-side impact collisions). Practical Applications This paper highlights the importance of deploying street lights at and near intersections (or access points) on two-lane rural roads because injury severity highly increases when crashes occur at these points in dark conditions. This paper models and mitigates the secondary crash (SC) risk for serial tunnels on the freeway which is incurred by traffic turbulence after primary crash (PC) occurrence and location-heterogeneous lighting conditions along serial tunnels. A traffic conflict approach is developed where SC risk is quantified using a surrogate safety measure based on the simulated vehicle trajectories after PC occurs from a lighting-related microscopic traffic model with inter-lane dependency. Numerical examples are presented to validate the model, illustrate SC risk pattern over time, and evaluate the countermeasures for SC, including adaptive tunnel lighting control (ATLC) and advanced speed and lane-changing guidance (ASLG) for connected vehicles (CVs). The results demonstrate that the tail of the stretching queue on the PC occurrence lane, the adjacent lane of the PC-incurred queue, and areas near tunnel portals are high-risk locations. In serial tunnels, creating a good lighting condition for drivers is more effective than advanced warnings in CVs to mitigate SC risk. Combined ATLC and ASLG is promising since ASLG informs CVs of an immediate response to traffic turbulence on the lane where PC occurs and ATLC alleviates SC risks on adjacent lanes via smoothing the lighting condition variations and reducing inter-lane dependency.

It provides a definition for the CIZ and presents an overview on several studies covering CIZ. It explains the experimental protocol used in the study and describes the process of measuring rectal and skin temperatures using thermistors. The study demonstrated a seasonal difference and effect of light exposure on the CIZ.

Abstract: This study was undertaken to develop machine vision-based raisin detection technology for various lighting conditions. Supervised color image segmentation using a permutation-coded genetic algorithm (GA) identifying regions in hue–saturation–intensity (HSI) color space (GAHSI) for desired and undesired raisin detection in various conditions was successfully implemented. Images from two extreme intensity lighting and dense conditions: under weak lighting and high-density product and under suitable lighting and low-density product, were mosaicked to explore the possibility of using GAHSI to locate desired raisin and undesired raisin regions in color space when these two extremes were presented simultaneously. The GAHSI results provided evidence for the existence and separability of such regions. In the experiment, GAHSI performance was measured by comparing the GAHSI-segmented image with a corresponding hand-segmented reference image. Many studies have examined the impact of factors affecting accident severity in rural areas; however, little attention has been paid to different lighting conditions (LCs), and less to the detailed categories and precise determining of twilight. In this paper, solar altitude angle (SAA), as a basis for differentiating and categorizing LCs, is proposed to investigate explanatory variables in much greater detail. For each LC, namely, dark, twilight, dark lit (dark with street lights) and daylight, separate random parameter models are developed to investigate the impacts of some factors on crash injury severity data of 2017 and 2018 in two lane rural roads of Texas. The model estimation results indicated that different LCs have various contributing factors, indeed, to each injury severity, further stressing the significance of investigating crashes based on SAA. The key differences include crash location, marked lane, grade direction, no passing zone, shoulder width, weekday and collision type. The important findings were that developing artificial lighting at intersections and LED raised pavement markers on two lane rural roads could lead to enhanced road safety under dark LCs. Furthermore, increasing shoulder width in straight segments of two lane rural roads is important for decreasing severe injury in daylight conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
