In this work, we investigate the collective flow development in high energy proton proton (pp) collisions with a multiphase transport model (AMPT) based on PYTHIA8 initial conditions with a sub-nucleon structure. It is found that the PYTHIA8 based AMPT model can reasonably describe both the charged hadron productions and elliptic flow experimental data measured in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. By turning on the parton and hadron rescatterings in AMPT separately, we find that the observed collective flow in pp collisions is largely developed during the parton evolutions, while no significant flow effect can be generated with the pure hadronic rescatterings. It is also shown that the parton escape mechanism is important for describing both the magnitude of the two-particle cumulant and the sign of the four-particle cumulants. We emphasize that the strong mass ordering of the elliptic flow results from the coalescence process in the transport model can thus be regarded as unique evidence related to the creation of deconfined parton matter in high energy pp collisions.

The impact of nuclear structure has garnered considerable attention in the high-energy nuclear physics community in recent years. This work focuses on studying the potential nuclear cluster structure in $^{16}\text{O}$ nuclei using anisotropic flow observables in $\rm O+O$ collisions at 200 GeV. Employing an improved AMPT model with various cluster structure configurations, we find that an extended effective parton formation time is necessary to align with the recent STAR experimental data. In addition, we reveal that the presented flow observables serve as sensitive probes for differentiating configurations of $\alpha$-clustering of $^{16}\text{O}$ nuclei. The systematic AMPT calculations presented in this paper, along with comprehensive comparisons to forthcoming experimental measurements at RHIC and the LHC, pave the way for a novel approach to investigate the $\alpha$-clustering structure of $^{16}\text{O}$ nuclei using $\rm O+O$ collisions at the ultra-relativistic energies., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We study the production of $D^0$ meson in $p$+$p$ and $p-$Pb collisions using the improved AMPT model considering both coalescence and independent fragmentation of charm quarks after the Cronin broadening are included. After a detailed discussion of the improvements implemented in the AMPT model for heavy quark production, we show that the modified AMPT model can provide good description of $D^0$ meson spectra in $p-$Pb collisions, the $Q_{\rm pPb}$ data at different centrality and $R_{\rm pPb}$ data in both mid- and forward (backward) rapidities. We also studied the effects of nuclear shadowing and parton cascade on the rapidity dependence of $D^{0}$ meson production and $R_{\rm pPb}$. Our results indicate that having the same strength of the Cronin (i.e $\delta$ value) obtained from the mid-rapidity data leads to a considerable overestimation of the $D^0$ meson spectra and $R_{\rm pPb}$ data at high $p_{T}$ in the backward rapidity. As a result, the $\delta$ is determined via a $\chi^2$ fitting of the $R_{\rm pPb}$ data across various rapidities. This work lays the foundation for a better understanding of cold-nuclear-matter (CNM) effects in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Fluctuations of conserved charges, such as the net-baryon number fluctuations, are influenced by different dynamical evolution processes. In this paper, we investigate the influence of hadronic rescatterings on different orders of cumulants of the net-baryon number distribution. At the start of hadronic rescatterings, we introduce net-baryon number distributions reconstructed based on net-baryon cumulants of different orders obtained from computation in functional renormalization group (FRG), where the distributions were constructed using the maximum entropy method. This way we introduce the critical fluctuations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) into the AMPT model. Firstly, we find that hadronic rescatterings have distinct effects on cumulant ratios of different orders for the net-baryon number. Secondly, we observe that the effect of hadronic rescatterings is more significant for critical fluctuations than dynamical fluctuations, because the two-, three- and four-particle correlation functions due to critical fluctuations are weakened more significantly by hadronic rescatterings., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We present the first study of collectivity inside jets with high charged multiplicity $N^j_{\rm ch}$ in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. By incorporating final-state partonic and hadronic interactions through cascade models among jet shower partons and final hadrons, we investigate and compare to the CMS experimental data on multiplicity distribution, pseudorapidity distribution, and elliptic anisotropy coefficient $v^{j}_2$ of two-particle correlations within the jet. We show that final-state partonic interactions are essential for producing the flow-like long-range correlation, which leads to the enhanced tail in the $N^j_{\rm ch}$ dependence of $v^{j}_2$ above the non-flow correlation from jet parton showering at high multiplicities ($N^j_{\rm ch}\gtrsim70$) as observed in the CMS experimental data. In addition, we provide predictions for the pseudorapidity-gap dependence of $v^{j}_2$ that can be tested in future experimental measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 4 fiures

The rapidity-odd directed flows ($v_{\rm 1}$) of identified hadrons are expected to follow the coalescence sum rule when the created matter is initially in parton degrees of freedom and then hadronizes through quark coalescence. A recent study has considered the $v_{\rm 1}$ of produced hadrons that do not contain $u$ or $d$ constituent quarks. It has constructed multiple hadron sets with a small mass difference but given difference in electric charge $\Delta q$ and strangeness $\Delta S$ between the two sides, where a nonzero and increasing $\Delta v_{\rm 1}$ with $\Delta q$ has been proposed to be a consequence of electromagnetic fields. In this study, we examine the consequence of coalescence sum rule on the $\Delta v_{\rm 1}$ of the hadron sets in the absence of electromagnetic fields. We find that in general $\Delta v_{\rm 1} \neq 0$ for a hadron set with nonzero $\Delta q$ and/or $\Delta S$ due to potential $v_{\rm 1}$ differences between $\bar u$ and $\bar d$ and between $s$ and $\bar s$ quarks. We further propose methods to extract the coefficients for the $\Delta q$- and $\Delta S$-dependences of the direct flow difference, where a nonzero constant term would indicate the breaking of the coalescence sum rule. It has been difficult to reconcile the experimental data on the $D^0$ meson nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow in $p-$Pb collisions at LHC energies. Here we study these observables with the string melting version of a multi-phase transport model, which has been improved with the implementation of the Cronin effect (or transverse momentum broadening) and independent fragmentation for charm quarks. Using a strong Cronin effect allows us to provide the first simultaneous description of the $D^0$ meson $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$ data at $p_{\rm T} \leq$ 8 GeV$/c$. The model also provides a reasonable description of the $D^0$ meson $p_{\rm T}$ spectra and the low-$p_{\rm T}$ (below $\sim$ 2 GeV$/c$) charged hadron spectra in $p+p$ and $p-$Pb collisions as well as $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$ in $p-$Pb collisions. We find that both parton scatterings and the Cronin effect are important for the $D^0$ meson $R_{\rm pA}$, while parton scatterings are mostly responsible for the $D^0$ meson $v_2$. Our results indicate that it is crucial to include the Cronin effect for the simultaneous description of the $D^0$ meson $R_{\rm pA}$ and $v_2$. In nuclear collisions at RHIC energies, an excess of $\Omega$ hyperons over $\bar{\Omega}$ is observed, indicating that $\Omega$ carries a net baryon number despite $s$ and $\bar{s}$ quarks being produced in pairs. The baryon number in $\Omega$ could have been transported from the incident nuclei and/or produced in baryon-pair production of $\Omega$ with other types of anti-hyperons, such as $\bar{\Xi}$. To investigate these two scenarios, we propose to measure correlations between $\Omega$ and $K$, as well as between $\Omega$ and anti-hyperons. We will use two versions, the default and string-melting, of a multiphase transport (AMPT) model to illustrate the method to measure the correlation and to demonstrate the general shape of the correlation. We will present the $\Omega$-hadron correlations from simulated $\mathrm{Au}$+$\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7$ and $14.6 \ \mathrm{GeV}$, and discuss the dependence on collision energy and on the hadronization scheme in these two AMPT versions. These correlations can be used to explore the mechanism of baryon number transport and the effects of baryon number and strangeness conservation in nuclear collisions.

Although strange quarks are produced in $s\bar{s}$ pairs, the ratio of $\Omega^{-}$ to ${\bar{\Omega}}^{+}$ is greater than one in heavy-ion collisions at lower RHIC energies. Thus the produced $\Omega$ hyperons must carry net baryon quantum numbers from the colliding nuclei. We present results of $K$-$\Omega$ correlations from AMPT model simulations of Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 14.6 GeV, to probe dynamics for baryon number transport to mid-rapidities at this beam energy. We use both the default and string-melting versions to illustrate how hadronization schemes of quark coalescence and string fragmentations could leave imprints on such correlations. At low to moderate collision energies where the parton formation time $\tau_F$ is not small compared to the nuclear crossing time, the finite nuclear thickness significantly affects the energy density $\epsilon(t)$ and net conserved-charge densities such as the net-baryon density $n_B(t)$ produced in heavy ion collisions. As a result, at low to moderate energies the trajectory in the QCD phase diagram is also affected by the finite nuclear thickness. Here, we first discuss our semi-analytical model and its results on $\epsilon(t)$, $n_B(t)$, $n_Q(t)$, and $n_S(t)$ in central Au+Au collisions. We then compare the $T(t)$, $\mu_B(t)$, $\mu_Q(t)$, and $\mu_S(t)$ extracted with the ideal gas equation of state (EoS) with quantum statistics to those extracted with a lattice QCD-based EoS. We also compare the $T-\mu_B$ trajectories with the RHIC chemical freezeout data. It has been a challenge to understand the experimental data on both the nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow of $D^0$ mesons in $p-$Pb collisions at LHC energies. The finite nuclear thickness affects the energy density $\epsilon(t)$ and conserved-charge densities such as the net-baryon density $n_B(t)$ produced in heavy ion collisions. While the effect is small at high collision energies where the Bjorken energy density formula for the initial state is valid, the effect is large at low collision energies, where the nuclear crossing time is not small compared to the parton formation time. The temperature $T(t)$ and chemical potentials $\mu(t)$ of the dense matter can be extracted from the densities for a given equation of state (EOS). Therefore, including the nuclear thickness is essential for the determination of the $T$-$\mu_B$ trajectory in the QCD phase diagram for relativistic nuclear collisions at low to moderate energies such as the RHIC-BES energies. In this proceeding, we will first discuss our semi-analytical method that includes the nuclear thickness effect and its results on the densities $\epsilon(t), n_B(t), n_Q(t)$, and $n_S(t)$. Then, we will show the extracted $T(t), \mu_B(t), \mu_Q(t)$, and $\mu_S(t)$ for a quark-gluon plasma using the ideal gas EOS with quantum or Boltzmann statistics. Finally, we will show the results on the $T$-$\mu_B$ trajectories in relation to the possible location of the QCD critical end point. The shear viscosity $\eta$ of a quark-gluon plasma in equilibrium can be calculated analytically using multiple methods or numerically using the Green-Kubo relation. It has been realized, which we confirm here, that the Chapman-Enskog method agrees well with the Green-Kubo result for both isotropic and anisotropic two-body scatterings. We then apply the Chapman-Enskog method to study the shear viscosity of the parton matter from a multi-phase transport model. In particular, we study the parton matter in the center cell of central and midcentral Au+Au collisions at $200A$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $2760A$ GeV, which is assumed to be a plasma in thermal equilibrium but partial chemical equilibrium. As a result of using a constant Debye mass or cross section $\sigma$ for parton scatterings, the $\eta/s$ ratio increases with time (as the effective temperature decreases), contrary to the trend preferred by Bayesian analysis of the experimental data or pQCD results that use temperature-dependent Debye masses. At $\sigma=3$ mb that enables the transport model to approximately reproduce the elliptic flow data of the bulk matter, the average $\eta/s$ of the parton matter in partial equilibrium is found to be very small, between one to two times $1/(4\pi)$., Comment: Added subsection on the Green-Kubo relation to better match published version

Recent beam energy scan (BES) experiments at RHIC by the STAR Collaboration (PLB {\bf 827},137003 (2022) and PRL {\bf 128}, 202303 (2022)) found that hadronic interactions dominate the collective flow and the proton cumulant ratios are driven by baryon number conservation in a region of high baryon density in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV Au+Au reactions, indicating the dense medium formed in such collisions is likely hadronic matter. Within an updated ART (A Relativistic Transport) model with momentum dependent isoscalar and isovector single-nucleon mean-field potentials corresponding to different symmetry energies at suprasaturation densities, the $n/p$, $\pi^{-}/\pi^{+}$, $K_{s}^{0}/K^{+}$, $\Sigma^{-}/\Sigma^{+}$ and $\Xi^{-}/\Xi^{0}$ ratios are studied for central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV where the maximum central density reaches about $(3.6\sim 4.0)\rho_0$. The doubly strange $\Xi^{-}/\Xi^{0}$ ratio is found to have the strongest sensitivity to the variation of high-density nuclear symmetry energy. Thus, the $\Xi^{-}/\Xi^{0}$ ratio in relativistic heavy-ion reactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} \sim 3$ GeV may help probe sensitively the poorly known symmetry energy of dense neutron-rich matter critically important for understanding various properties of neutron stars., Comment: With minor revisions. During the early development of Quantum Chromodynamics, it was proposed that baryon number could be carried by a non-perturbative Y-shaped topology of gluon fields, called the gluon junction, rather than by the valence quarks as in the QCD standard model. A puzzling feature of ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is the apparent substantial baryon excess in the midrapidity region that could not be adequately accounted for in most conventional models of quark and diquark transport. The transport of baryonic gluon junctions is predicted to lead to a characteristic exponential distribution of net-baryon density with rapidity and could resolve the puzzle. In this context we point out that the rapidity density of net-baryons near midrapidity indeed follows an exponential distribution with a slope of $-0.61\pm0.03$ as a function of beam rapidity in the existing global data from A+A collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. To further test if quarks or gluon junctions carry the baryon quantum number, we propose to study the absolute magnitude of the baryon vs. charge stopping in isobar collisions at RHIC. We also argue that semi-inclusive photon-induced processes ($\gamma+p$/A) at RHIC kinematics provide an opportunity to search for the signatures of the baryon junction and to shed light onto the mechanisms of observed baryon excess in the mid-rapidity region in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. The near-side depression in two-proton or two-antiproton azimuthal correlations in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$7 TeV has been observed experimentally and then qualitatively reproduced in our earlier studies with a multi-phase transport model. In this study, we further investigate the origin of the depression feature in two-baryon correlations in small collision systems. We find that the initial parton-level spatial correlation, a finite expansion in the parton stage, and quark coalescence are important ingredients leading to the near-side depression. In particular, we find that a finite expansion of the parton system leads to a finite space-momentum correlation at hadronization, which then converts the near-side depression in the coordinate space to that in the momentum space. These results suggest that a partonic matter with a finite lifetime is formed in the pp collisions. Further studies are needed to determine whether the partonic matter is near local equilibrium and can thus be called a QGP or far away from local equilibrium., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Flow-like signals including the ridge structure observed in small collision systems that are similar to those in large collision systems have led to questions about the onset of collectivity in nuclear collisions. In this study, we use the string melting version of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model with or without the sub-nucleon geometry for the proton to study multiparticle cumulants in $p+p$ collisions at 13 TeV. Both versions of the model produce negative $c_{2}\{4 \}$ values at high multiplicities. In addition, the dependence of $c_{2}\{4 \}$ on the parton cross section is non-monotonous, where only a range of parton cross section values leads to negative $c_{2} \{4 \}$. Furthermore, the AMPT model with sub-nucleon geometry better describes the multiplicity dependence of $c_{2} \{4 \}$, demonstrating the importance of incorporating the sub-nucleon geometry in studies of small collision systems., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures (added two figures)

We extend a semi-analytical model that includes the finite nuclear thickness to calculate the energy density $\epsilon(t)$ and conserved-charge densities including the net-baryon density $n_{\rm _B}(t)$ produced at mid-spacetime-rapidity in central Au+Au collisions. Assuming the formation of a quark-gluon plasma with an ideal gas equation of state of either quantum or Boltzmann statistics or with a lattice QCD-based equation of state, we extract the temperature $T$ and chemical potentials $\mu_{\rm _B}$, $\mu_{\rm _Q}$ and $\mu_{\rm _S}$ as functions of time. This then allows us to semi-analytically calculate the $T-\mu_{\rm _B}$ trajectory of relativistic nuclear collisions in the QCD phase diagram, which should benefit the studies of high density physics including the search for the critical end point. A multi-phase transport (AMPT) model was constructed as a self-contained kinetic theory-based description of relativistic nuclear collisions as it contains four main components: the fluctuating initial condition, a parton cascade, hadronization, and a hadron cascade. Here, we review the main developments after the first public release of the AMPT source code in 2004 and the corresponding publication that described the physics details of the model at that time. Recently the splitting of elliptic flow $v_2$ at finite rapidities has been proposed as a result of the global vorticity in non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this study, we find that this left-right (i.e., on opposite sides of the impact parameter axis) splitting of the elliptic flow at finite rapidities is a result of the non-zero directed flow $v_1$, with the splitting magnitude $\approx 8v_1(1-3v_2)/(3\pi)$. We also use a multi-phase transport model, which automatically includes the vorticity field and flow fluctuations, to confirm the $v_2$ splitting. In addition, we find that the analytical expectations for the $v_2$ splitting work for the raw $v_2$ and $v_1$ (i.e., before event plane resolutions are applied) measured relative to either the first- or second-order event plane. Since the $v_2$ splitting is mostly driven by $v_1$, it vanishes at zero transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$), and its magnitude and sign may have non-trivial dependencies on $p_{\rm T}$, centrality, collision energy, and hadron species., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures; v2 splitting results are now shown to 2nd order, added a new section with six figures to show results from the event plane method

Double strangeness $\Xi^{-}$ production in Au+Au collisions at 2, 4, and 6 GeV/nucleon incident beam energies is studied with the pure hadron cascade version of a multi-phase transport model. It is found that due to larger nuclear compression, the model with the soft equation of state (EoS) gives larger yields of both single strangeness ($K^{+}$ and $\Lambda+\Sigma^{0}$) and double strangeness $\Xi^{-}$. The sensitivity of the double strangeness $\Xi^{-}$ to the EoS is evidently larger than that of $K^{+}$ or $\Lambda+\Sigma^{0}$ since the phase-space distribution of produced $\Xi^{-}$ is more compact compared to those of the single strangeness. The larger sensitivity of the yields ratio of $\Xi^{-}$ to the EoS from heavy and light systems is kept compared to that of the single strangeness. The study of $\Xi^{-}$ production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions provides an alternative for the ongoing heavy-ion collision program at facilities worldwide for identifying the EoS at high densities, which is relevant to the investigation of the phase boundary and onset of deconfinement of dense nuclear matter., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, PLB, in production

The striking resemblance of high multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC to heavy ion collisions challenges our conventional wisdom on the formation of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). A consistent explanation of the collectivity phenomena in pp will help us to understand the mechanism that leads to the QGP-like signals in small systems. In this study, we introduce a transport model approach connecting the initial conditions provided by PYTHIA8 with subsequent AMPT rescatterings to study the collective behavior in high energy pp collisions. The multiplicity dependence of light hadron productions from this model is in reasonable agreement with the pp $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV experimental data. It is found in the comparisons that both the partonic and hadronic final state interactions are important for the generation of the radial flow feature of the pp transverse momentum spectra. The study also shows that the long range two particle azimuthal correlation in high multiplicity pp events is sensitive to the proton sub-nucleon spatial fluctuations.

We extensively study the system size dependence of nuclear collisions with a multi-phase transport model. Previously certain key parameters for the initial condition needed significantly different values for $pp$ and central $AA$ collisions for the model to reasonably describe the yields and transverse momentum spectra of the bulk matter in those collision systems. Here we scale two key parameters, the Lund string fragmentation parameter $b_L$ and the minijet transverse momentum cutoff $p_0$, with local nuclear thickness functions from the two colliding nuclei. This allows the model to use the parameter values for $pp$ collisions with the local nuclear scaling to describe the system size and centrality dependences of nuclear collisions self consistently. In addition to providing good descriptions of $pp$ collisions from 23.6 GeV to 13 TeV and reasonable descriptions of the centrality dependence of charged particle yields for Au+Au collisions from $7.7A$ GeV to $200A$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies, the improved model can now well describe the centrality dependence of the mean transverse momentum of charged particles below $p_{\rm T} \lesssim 2$ GeV. It works similarly well for smaller systems including $p$Pb, Cu+Cu and Xe+Xe collisions., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Using the string melting version of a multiphase transport model, we focus on the evolution of thermodynamic properties of the central cell of parton matter produced in Au$+$Au collisions ranging from 200 GeV down to 2.7 GeV. The temperature and chemical potentials have been calculated based on both Boltzmann and quantum statistics in order to locate their evolution trajectories in the QCD phase diagram. We demonstrate that the trajectories can depend on many physical factors, especially the finite nuclear thickness at lower energies. However, from the evolution of pressure anisotropy, only partial thermalization can be achieved when the partonic systems reach the predicted QCD phase boundary. Spin alignments of vector mesons and hyperons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions have been proposed as signals of the global polarization. The STAR experiment first observed the $\rm \Lambda$ polarization. Recently, the ALICE collaboration measured the transverse momentum ($p_T$) and the collision centrality dependence of $K^*$ and $\phi$ spin alignments in Pb-Pb collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. A large signal is observed in the low $p_T$ region of mid-central collisions for $K^*$ while the signal is much smaller for $\phi$, and these have not been understood yet. Since vector mesons have different lifetimes and their decay products have different scattering cross sections, they suffer from different hadronic effects. In this paper, we study the effect of hadronic interactions on the spin alignment of $K^*$, $\phi$ and $\rho$ mesons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions with a multi-phase transport model. We find that hadronic scatterings lead to a deviation of the observed spin alignment matrix element $\rho_{00}$ away from the true value for $\rho$ and $K^*$ mesons (with a bigger effect on $\rho$) while the effect is negligible for the $\phi$ meson. The effect depends on the kinematic acceptance: the observed $\rho_{00}$ value is lower than the true value when the pseudorapidity ($\eta$) coverage is small while there is little effect when the $\eta$ coverage is big. The initial energy density produced in heavy ion collisions can be estimated with the Bjorken energy density formula after choosing a proper formation time $\tau{_{\rm F}}$. However, the Bjorken formula breaks down at low energies because it neglects the finite nuclear thickness. Here we include both the finite time duration and finite longitudinal extension of the initial energy production. When $\tau{_{\rm F}}$ is not too much smaller than the crossing time of the two nuclei, our results are similar to those from a previous study that only considers the finite time duration. In particular, we find that at low energies the initial energy density has a much lower maximum value but evolves much longer than the Bjorken formula, while at large-enough $\tau{_{\rm F}}$ and/or high-enough energies our result approaches the Bjorken formula. We also find a qualitative difference in that our maximum energy density $\epsilon^{\rm max}$ at $\tau{_{\rm F}}=0$ is finite, while the Bjorken formula diverges as $1/\tau{_{\rm F}}$ and the previous result diverges as $\ln (1/\tau{_{\rm F}})$ at low energies but as $1/\tau{_{\rm F}}$ at high energies. Furthermore, our solution of the energy density approximately satisfies a scaling relation. As a result, the $\tau{_{\rm F}}$-dependence of $\epsilon^{\rm max}$ determines the $A$-dependence, and the weaker $\tau{_{\rm F}}$-dependence of $\epsilon^{\rm max}$ in our results at low energies means a slower increase of $\epsilon^{\rm max}$ with $A$., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table; typos in Eq.(19) and Fig.8 corrected; final published version

We introduce additional coalescence factors for the production of strange baryons in a multiphase transport (AMPT) model in order to describe the enhanced production of multistrange hadrons observed in Pb-Pb collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV at the Large hadron Collider (LHC) and Au+Au collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC).This extended AMPT model is found to also give a reasonable description of the multiplicity dependence of the strangeness enhancement observed in high multiplicity events in $pp$ collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and $p$-Pb collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. We find that the coalescence factors depend on the system size but not much on whether the system is produced from A+A or p+A collisions. The extended AMPT model thus provides a convenient way to model the mechanism underlying the observed strangeness enhancement in collisions of both small and large systems at RHIC and LHC energies., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We use the string melting version of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model to study Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. The rapidity distributions of identified hadrons show asymmetric dependences on rapidity. In addition, elliptic and triangular flows at mid-rapidity from the AMPT model for pions, kaons, and protons agree reasonably with the experimental data up to $p_{T}\sim1$ GeV$/c$. We then investigate the forward/backward asymmetry of $v_2$ and $v_3$. We find that these anisotropic flows are larger on the Au-going side than the Cu-going side, while the asymmetry tends to go away in very peripheral collisions. We also make predictions on transverse momentum spectra of identified hadrons and longitudinal decorrelations of charged particles, where the average decorrelation of elliptic flow in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions is found to be stronger than that in Au+Au collisions., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

Cascade solutions of the Boltzmann equation suffer from causality violation at large densities and/or scattering cross sections. Although the particle subdivision technique can reduce the causality violation, it alters event-by-event correlations and fluctuations and is also computationally expensive. Here we evaluate and then improve the accuracy of the ZPC parton cascade for elastic scatterings inside a box without using parton subdivision. We first test different collision schemes for the collision times and ordering time and find that the default collision scheme does not accurately describe the equilibrium momentum distribution at large opacities. We then find a specific collision scheme that can describe very accurately the equilibrium momentum distribution as well as the time evolution towards equilibrium, even at large opacities. We also calculate the shear viscosity and the $\eta/s$ ratio of the parton systems and confirm that the new collision scheme is more accurate. In addition, we use a novel parton subdivision method to obtain the "exact" evolution of the system. This subdivision method is valid for such box calculations and is so much more efficient than the standard subdivision method that we use a subdivision factor of $10^6$ in this study., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables; added calculations of shear viscosity and eta/s ratio of the parton systems under study

In earlier studies we have proposed that most parton $v_2$ comes from the anisotropic escape of partons, not from the hydrodynamic flow, even for semi-central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. Here we study the flavor dependence of this escape mechanism with a multi-phase transport model. In contrast to naive expectations, we find that the charm $v_2$ is much more sensitive to the hydrodynamic flow than the lighter quark $v_2$, and the fraction of $v_2$ from the escape mechanism decreases strongly with the quark mass for large collision systems. We also find that the light quark collective flow is essential for the charm quark $v_2$. Our finding thus suggests that heavy quark flows are better probes of the quark-gluon-plasma properties than light quark flows., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. We extend our earlier study on two-particle angular correlations in $pp$ collisions at low transverse momentum ($p_T$) to $p$-Pb, Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We mainly use the string melting version of a multiphase transport model with improved quark coalescence for this study. We start from the analysis of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$ and $p$($\bar{p}$) $p_T$ and rapidity distributions at different centralities. We then focus on two-particle angular correlations in $p$-Pb collisions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02}$ TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2.76}$ TeV. For $p$-Pb collisions, a near side depression in the angular correlation is observed for low $p_T$ proton pairs and $\Lambda$ pairs but not for pion pairs or kaon pairs, similar to our earlier finding for $pp$ collisions at $\mathrm{\sqrt{s}= 7}$ TeV. This is also the case for very low multiplicity Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions. We also find that parton interactions and the improved quark coalescence are mainly responsible for the depression feature in baryon pair angular correlations. However, no such baryon-baryon anti-correlations are observed in Pb-Pb and Au-Au collisions at higher multiplicities. Therefore our results suggest that low $p_T$ baryon-baryon angular anti-correlations have a strong multiplicity dependence., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures, submit for publication

The rapidity-odd component of directed flow ($v_{1}$) of identified hardons ($\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, $p$, $\bar{p}$, $\phi$, $\Xi$, $\bar{\Xi}$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$) and partons ($u$, $\bar{u}$, $d$, $\bar{d}$, $s$, $\bar{s}$) in Au+Au collisions at various beam energies ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4, 200 GeV) using a multi-phase transport model is analyzed. A data driven approach (inspired from the experimental analysis) is performed here to distinguish the transported and produced quarks which are found to have different directed flow values at various collision beam energies. The coalescence sum rule (Number of Constituent Quark scaling) violation is observed at lower energies where hadronic matters dominate. The strange quark ($s$) and $\phi$ meson slope (d$v_{1}$/d$y$) show a double sign change around 14.5 GeV, unlike other partons and hadrons. A multi-phase transport (AMPT) model has been successful in explaining a wide range of observables in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we implement a modern set of free proton parton distribution functions and an impact parameter-dependent nuclear shadowing in the AMPT model. After refitting the parameters of the two-component initial condition model to the experimental data on $pp$ and $p \bar p$ total and inelastic cross sections from $\sqrt s \sim $ 4 GeV to 13 TeV, we study particle productions in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions. We show that the updated AMPT model with string melting can reasonably describe the overall particle yields and transverse momentum spectra for both $pp$ and $AA$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies after we introduce a nuclear scaling of the minijet transverse momentum cutoff for $AA$ collisions at LHC energies that is motivated by the color glass condensate. Since heavy flavor and high-$p_{\rm T}$ particles are produced by perturbative-QCD processes and thus directly depend on parton distribution functions of nuclei, the updated AMPT model is expected to provide a more reliable description of these observables., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Isobaric $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions were performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2018. Using the "a multi-phase transport" model with nuclear structures calculated by the density functional theory (DFT), we make predictions for the charged hadron multiplicity distributions and elliptic azimuthal anisotropies in these collisions. In this proceeding we will show that the expectations of the isobaric $^{96}_{44}\mathrm{Ru}+^{96}_{44}\mathrm{Ru}$ and $^{96}_{40}\mathrm{Zr}+^{96}_{40}\mathrm{Zr}$ collisions on chiral magnetic effect (CME) search may not hold as originally anticipated due to large uncertainties in the isobaric nuclear structures. We demonstrate this using Woods-Saxon densities and the proton and neutron densities calculated by the density functional theory. Furthermore, a novel method is proposed to gauge background and possible CME contributions in the same system, intrinsically better than the isobaric collisions of two different systems. We study the charm quark elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) in heavy ion as well as small system collisions by tracking the evolution history of quarks of different flavors within a multi-phase transport model. The charm quark $v_{2}$ is studied as a function of the number of collisions the charm quark suffers with other quarks and then compared to the $v_{2}$ of lighter quarks. We find that the common escape mechanism is at work for both the charm and light quark $v_{2}$. However, contrary to the naive expectation, the hydrodynamics-type flow is found to contribute more to the final state charm $v_{2}$ than light quark $v_{2}$. This could be explained by the smaller average deflection angle the heavier charm quark undergoes in each collision, so that heavy quarks need more scatterings to accumulate a significant $v_{2}$, while lighter quarks can more easily change directions with scatterings with their $v_{2}$ coming more from the escape mechanism. Our finding thus suggests that the charm $v_{2}$ is a better probe for studying the hydrodynamic properties of the quark-gluon plasma., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We propose a novel method to search for the chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions. We argue that the relative strength of the magnetic field (mainly from spectator protons and responsible for the CME) with respect to the reaction plane and the participant plane is opposite to that of the elliptic flow background arising from the fluctuating participant geometry. This opposite behavior in a single collision system, hence with small systematic uncertainties, can be exploited to extract the possible CME signal from the flow background. In non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions, the created matter possesses a large initial orbital angular momentum. Particles produced in the collisions could be polarized globally in the direction of the orbital angular momentum due to spin-orbit coupling. Recently, the STAR experiment has presented polarization signals for $\Lambda$ hyperons and possible spin alignment signals for $\phi$ mesons. Here we discuss the effects of finite coverage on these observables. The results from a multi-phase transport and a toy model both indicate that a pseudorapidity coverage narrower than $|\eta|< \sim 1$ will generate a larger value for the extracted $\phi$-meson $\rho_{00}$ parameter; thus a finite coverage can lead to an artificial deviation of $\rho_{00}$ from 1/3. We also show that a finite $\eta$ and $p_T$ coverage affect the extracted $p_H$ parameter for $\Lambda$ hyperons when the real $p_H$ value is non-zero. Under the approximate chiral symmetry restoration, quark interactions with topological gluon fields in quantum chromodynamics can induce chirality imbalance and parity violation in local domains. An electric charge separation ({\sc cs}) could be generated along the direction of a strong magnetic field ({\bf B}), a phenomenon called the chiral magnetic effect ({\sc cme}). {\sc cs} measurements by azimuthal correlators are contaminated by a major background from elliptic flow anisotropy ($v_2$). Isobaric $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr collisions have been proposed to identify the {\sc cme} (expected to differ between the two systems) out of the background (expected to be almost the same). For relativistic heavy ion collisions, the Bjorken formula is very useful for estimating the initial energy density once an initial time $\tau_0$ is specified. However, it cannot be trusted at low energies, e.g. well below $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} \approx 50$ GeV for central Au+Au collisions, when $\tau_0$ is smaller than the finite time it takes for the two nuclei to cross each other. Here I extend the Bjorken formula by including the finite time duration of the initial energy production. Analytical solutions for the formed energy density in the central spacetime-rapidity region are derived for several time profiles. Compared to the Bjorken formula at low energies, the maximum energy density reached is much lower, increases much faster with the collision energy, and is much less sensitive to the uncertainty of the formation time, while the energy density time evolution is much longer. Comparisons with results from a multi-phase transport confirm the key features of these solutions. The effect of the finite longitudinal width of the initial energy production, which is neglected in the analytical results, is investigated with the transport model and shown to be small. The string melting version of a multi-phase transport model is often applied to high-energy heavy-ion collisions since the dense matter thus formed is expected to be in parton degrees of freedom. In this work we improve its quark coalescence component, which describes the hadronization of the partonic matter to a hadronic matter. We removed the previous constraint that forced the numbers of mesons, baryons, and antibaryons in an event to be separately conserved through the quark coalescence process. A quark now could form either a meson or a baryon depending on the distance to its coalescence partner(s). We then compare results from the improved model with the experimental data on hadron $dN/dy$, $p_{_{\rm T}}$ spectra, and $v_2$ in heavy-ion collisions from $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=62.4$ GeV to $5.02$ TeV. We show that, besides being able to describe these observables for low-$p_{_{\rm T}}$ pions and kaons, the improved model also better describes the low-$p_{_{\rm T}}$ baryon observables in general, especially the baryon $p_{_{\rm T}}$ spectra and antibaryon-to-baryon ratios for multistrange baryons., Comment: Discussion extended, added Fig3(b), 16 pages, 12 figures

A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model has been shown to describe experimental data well, such as the bulk properties of particle spectra and elliptic anisotropy ($v_{2}$) in heavy ion collisions. Recent studies have shown that AMPT describes the $v_{2}$ data in small system collisions as well. In these proceedings, we first investigate the origin of the mass ordering of identified hadrons $v_{2}$ in heavy ion as well as small system collisions. Both hydrodynamics-based models and a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the mass splitting of azimuthal anisotropy ($v_n$) at low transverse momentum ($p_{\perp}$) as observed in heavy ion collisions. In the AMPT model, however, $v_n$ is mainly generated by the parton escape mechanism, not by the hydrodynamic flow. In this study we provide detailed results on the mass splitting of $v_n$ in this transport model, including $v_2$ and $v_3$ of various hadron species in d+Au and Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and p+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We show that the mass splitting of hadron $v_2$ and $v_3$ in AMPT first arises from the kinematics in the quark coalescence hadronization process, and then, more dominantly, comes from hadronic rescatterings, even though the contribution from the latter to the overall charged hadron $v_n$ is small. We further show that there is no qualitative difference between heavy ion collisions and small-system collisions or between elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) anisotropies. Our studies thus demonstrate that the mass splitting of $v_2$ and $v_3$ at low-$p_{\perp}$ is not a unique signature of hydrodynamic collective flow but can be the interplay of several physics effects., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures. We study the rotational collective motion of the quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the widely-adopted AMPT (A Multi-Phase Transport) model. The global angular momentum, the average vorticity carried by the quark-gluon plasma, and the locally defined vorticity fields are computed for Au+Au collisions, with detailed information of their time evolution, spatial distribution, as well as the dependence on beam energy and collision centrality.

We present predictions from the string melting version of a multi-phase transport model on various observables in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. We use the same version of the model as an earlier study that reasonably reproduced dN/dy, $p_{\rm T}$-spectra and elliptic flow of charged pions and kaons at low-$p_{\rm T}$ for central and semi-central heavy ion collisions at 200 GeV and 2.76 TeV. The mass splitting of elliptic anisotropy ($v_2$) at low transverse momentum is considered as a hallmark of hydrodynamic collective flow. We investigate a multiphase transport (AMPT) model where the $v_2$ is mainly generated by an anisotropic escape mechanism, not of the hydrodynamic flow nature, and where mass splitting is also observed. We demonstrate that the $v_2$ mass splitting in AMPT is small right after hadronization (especially when resonance decays are included); the mass splitting mainly comes from hadronic rescatterings, even though their contribution to the overall charged hadron $v_2$ is small. These findings are qualitatively the same as those from hybrid models that combine hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade. We further show that there is no qualitative difference between heavy ion collisions and small system collisions. Our results indicate that the $v_2$ mass splitting is not a unique signature of hydrodynamic collective flow and thus cannot distinguish whether the elliptic flow is generated mainly from hydrodynamics or the anisotropic parton escape., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We trace the development of elliptic anisotropy (v2) via parton-parton collision history in two transport models. The parton v2 is studied as a function of the number of collisions of each parton in Au+Au and d+Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV. It is found that the majority of v2 comes from the anisotropic escape probability of partons, with no fundamental difference at low and high transverse momenta. The contribution to v2 from hydrodynamic-type collective flow is found to be small. Only when the parton-parton cross-section is set unrealistically large does this contribution start to take over.
