Abstract

The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR comprises two arrays of high-purity germanium detectors constructed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76-Ge and other physics beyond the Standard Model. Its readout electronics were designed to have low electronic noise, and radioactive backgrounds were minimized by using low-mass components and low-radioactivity materials near the detectors. This paper provides a description of all components of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR readout electronics, spanning the front-end electronics and internal cabling, back-end electronics, digitizer, and power supplies, along with the grounding scheme. The spectroscopic performance achieved with these readout electronics is also demonstrated., For submission to JINST, 17 figures. v2: revised version

Abstract

The Majorana Collaboration is using an array of high-purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge. Searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay are understood to be the only viable experimental method for testing the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Observation of this decay would imply violation of lepton number, that neutrinos are Majorana in nature, and provide information on the neutrino mass. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of p-type point-contact Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in 76Ge) surrounded by a low-background shield system. The experiment achieved a high efficiency of converting raw Ge material to detectors and an unprecedented detector energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Qββ. The Majorana collaboration began taking physics data in 2016. This paper summarizes key construction aspects of the Demonstrator and shows preliminary results from initial data.

Abstract

The majorana demonstrator is a neutrinoless double-β decay search consisting of a low-background modular array of high-purity germanium detectors, ∼2/3 of which are enriched to 88% in Ge76. The experiment is also searching for double-beta decay of Ge76 to excited states (e.s.) in Se76. Ge76 can decay into three daughter states of Se76, with clear event signatures consisting of a ββ-decay followed by the prompt emission of one or two γ rays. This results with high probability in multi-detector coincidences. The granularity of the demonstrator detector array enables powerful discrimination of this event signature from backgrounds. Using 41.9 kg yr of isotopic exposure, the demonstrator has set world leading limits for each e.s. decay of Ge76, with 90% CL lower half-life limits in the range of (0.75-4.0)×1024 yr. In particular, for the 2ν transition to the first 0+ e.s. of Se76, a lower half-life limit of 7.5×1023 yr at 90% CL was achieved.

Abstract

Experiments searching for very rare processes such as neutrinoless double-beta decay require a detailed understanding of all sources of background. Signals from radioactive impurities present in construction and detector materials can be suppressed using a number of well-understood techniques. Background from in-situ cosmogenic interactions can be reduced by siting an experiment deep underground. However, the next generation of such experiments have unprecedented sensitivity goals of 10$^{28}$ years half-life with background rates of 10$^{-5}$cts/(keV kg yr) in the region of interest. To achieve these goals, the remaining cosmogenic background must be well understood. In the work presented here, Majorana Demonstrator data is used to search for decay signatures of meta-stable germanium isotopes. Contributions to the region of interest in energy and time are estimated using simulations, and compared to Demonstrator data. Correlated time-delayed signals are used to identify decay signatures of isotopes produced in the germanium detectors. A good agreement between expected and measured rate is found and different simulation frameworks are used to estimate the uncertainties of the predictions. The simulation campaign is then extended to characterize the background for the LEGEND experiment, a proposed tonne-scale effort searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

The reaction of N,N-diethyl-2-(dimethylsulfuranylidene)acetamide (1) with protected monosaccharides was extended to a number of O-benzyl- and 4,6-O-benzylidene-d-gluco- and -D-galactopyranose derivatives. Results verified the importance of the protecting group at the hydroxyl on C-2 of the starting 4,6-O-benzylidene-d-glucopyranose. Also, the size of the substituent at C-2 and the presence of a 4,6-O-benzylidene group were found to be essential factors in determining the yield and stereoselectivity of these reactions.

Abstract

Derivatives of acyclic 3-(polyhydroxylkyl)-alpha,beta-epoxyamides were formed by the reaction of N,N-diethyl-2-(dimethylsulfuranylidene)acetamide with 4,6-omicron-glycopyranoses. The stereoselective synthesis of acylic epoxyamides from acyclic monosaccharide derivatives involves the introduction of two chiral carbons with a substituted asymmetric epoxide group that undergoes regioselective transformation. Furthermore, 2,3-isopropylidene-glucofuranose derivatives produced mainly cyclic C-glycofuranosides.

Abstract

Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the utility of a post hoc lactate added to SIRS and qSOFA score to predict 30-day mortality in older non-severely dependent patients attended for infection in the Emergency Department (ED). Methods. We performed an analytical, observational, prospective cohort study including patients of 75 years of age or older, without severe functional dependence, attended for an infectious disease in 69 Spanish ED for 2-day three seasonal periods. Demographic, clinical and analytical data were collected. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality after the index event. Results. We included 739 patients with a mean age of 84.9 (SD 6.0) years; 375 (50.7%) were women. Ninety-one (12.3%) died within 30 days. The AUC was 0.637 (IC 95% 0.587-0.688; p= 2 and 0.698 (IC 95% 0.635- 0.761; p= 2. Comparing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) there was a better accuracy of qSOFA vs SIRS (p=0.041). Abstract

Using a large sample of D+→K−π+μ+ν decays collected by the FOCUS photoproduction experiment at Fermilab, we present new measurements of two semileptonic form factor ratios: rv and r2. We find rv=1.504±0.057±0.039 and r2=0.875±0.049±0.064. Our form factor results include the effects of the s-wave interference discussed in Phys. Lett. B 535 (2002) 43.

Abstract

Background: There is little information on the incidence of AIDS-defining events which have been reported in the literature to be associated with immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) after combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) initiation. These events include tuberculosis, mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), herpes simplex virus (HSV), Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), cryptococcosis and candidiasis. Methods: We identified individuals in the HIV-CAUSAL Collaboration, which includes data from six European countries and the US, who were HIV-positive between 1996 and 2013, antiretroviral therapy naive, aged at least 18 years, hadCD4+ cell count and HIV-RNA measurements and had been AIDS-free for at least 1 month between those measurements and the start of follow-up. For each AIDS-defining event, we estimated the hazard ratio for no cART versus less than 3 and at least 3 months since cART initiation, adjusting for time-varying CD4+ cell count and HIV-RNA via inverse probability weighting. Results: Out of 96 562 eligible individuals (78% men) with median (interquantile range) follow-up of 31 [13,65] months, 55 144 initiated cART. The number of cases varied between 898 for tuberculosis and 113 for PML. Compared with non-cART initiation, the hazard ratio (95% confidence intervals) up to 3 months after cART initiation were 1.21 (0.90-1.63) for tuberculosis, 2.61 (1.05-6.49) for MAC, 1.17 (0.34-4.08) for CMV retinitis, 1.18 (0.62-2.26) for PML, 1.21 (0.83-1.75) for HSV, 1.18 (0.87-1.58) for Kaposi sarcoma, 1.56 (0.82-2.95) for NHL, 1.11 (0.56-2.18) for cryptococcosis and 0.77 (0.40-1.49) for candidiasis. Conclusion: With the potential exception of mycobacterial infections, unmasking IRIS does not appear to be a common complication of cART initiation in high-income countries. © 2014 Wolters Kluwer Health | Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Abstract

Semantic segmentation refers to the process of assigning an object label (e.g., building, road, sidewalk, car, pedestrian) to every pixel in an image. Common approaches formulate the task as a random field labeling problem modeling the interactions between labels by combining local and contextual features such as color, depth, edges, SIFT or HoG. These models are trained to maximize the likelihood of the correct classification given a training set. However, these approaches rely on hand---designed features (e.g., texture, SIFT or HoG) and a higher computational time required in the inference process. Therefore, in this paper, we focus on estimating the unary potentials of a conditional random field via ensembles of learned features. We propose an algorithm based on convolutional neural networks to learn local features from training data at different scales and resolutions. Then, diversification between these features is exploited using a weighted linear combination. Experiments on a publicly available database show the effectiveness of the proposed method to perform semantic road scene segmentation in still images. The algorithm outperforms appearance based methods and its performance is similar compared to state---of---the---art methods using other sources of information such as depth, motion or stereo.

Abstract

Objective: To determine the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in the assessment of vascular prosthetic graft infection. Method(s): Prospective cohort study with retrospective analysis. Assess to 8 patients with clinically suspected vascular prosthetic infection underwent a 18F-FDG-PET/CT scan. Angiography studies and Tc99m-HMPAO labeled leukocyte scintigraphy results were correlated with PET/CT uptake. The gold standard was based on operative/histopathological finding or a clinical follow up of >6 months. Result(s): A total of 8 patients (5 men and 3 women), with a mean age 61 +/- 13.6 years and range 38-77. The location of the graft prosthesis was: Aorto-bifemoral (5), Aorto-iliacal (1), Femoro-popliteal (1) and Thoraco-abdominal (1). Seven patients presented pathological uptake in PET/CT and according to operative/histopathological findings or a clinical follow up presented vascular prosthetic graft infection. The mean SUV max was 6.4 g/ml +/- 1.8 and range 4.0-9.0. Positive findings for infection were observed at angio-CT or angio-MRI. However, three cases evidenced negative Tc99m-HMPAO labeled leukocyte scintigraphy. Only one patient demonstrated a negative PET/CT, concordance to a normal angio- MRI and nonclinical signs of infections at follow up for one year. Conclusion(s): PET/CT-FDG is a useful tool in the diagnosis of vascular prosthetic graft infection with excellent accuracy. The concordance between angiography studies and the tomography functional scan was high; however, the Tc99m-HMPAO labeled leukocyte scintigraphy was not helpful for the detection of vascular prosthetic graft infection.

Abstract

In this paper, a recently proposed reduced order model for Modular Multilevel Converters is validated and used to analyze the role of the circulating current in the power transfer inside the converter. This model simplifies the analysis of the converter by removing the discontinuities and reducing the order of the system. Therefore, continuous analytical expressions can be obtained and analyzed. The reduced order is used to model the dynamics of the state space variables of the converter. The results show that, the higher the number of modules used in the converter, the more accurate are the results of the model. Moreover, the influence of different harmonic components of the circulating current over the module’s voltage ripple, and the influence of the circulating current components on the power transfer in the converter are analyzed. Inter alia, the analysis shows the importance of the even order harmonics of the circulating current in the reactive power transfer within the converter.

Abstract

Inevitably, healthcare goes mobile. Recently developed mobile healthcare (i.e., m-health) services allow healthcare professionals to monitor mobile patient's vital signs and provide feedback to this patient anywhere at any time. Due to the nature of current supporting mobile service platforms, m-health services are delivered with a best-effort, i.e., there are no guarantees on the delivered Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper, we argue that the use of context information in an m-health service platform improves the delivered QoS. We give a first attempt to merge context information with a QoS-aware mobile service platform in the m-health services domain. We illustrate this with an epilepsy tele-monitoring scenario.
