Several Earth system components are at a high risk of undergoing rapid and irreversible qualitative changes or `tipping', due to increasing climate warming. Potential tipping elements include Arctic sea-ice, Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, and tropical coral reefs. Amidst such immediate concerns, it has become necessary to investigate the feasibility of arresting or even reversing the crossing of tipping thresholds using feedback control. In this paper, we study the control of an idealized diffusive energy balance model (EBM) for the Earth's climate; this model has two tipping points due to strong co-albedo feedback. One of these tipping points is a `small icecap' instability responsible for a rapid transition to an ice-free climate state under increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing. We develop an optimal control strategy for the EBM under different climate forcing scenarios with the goal of reversing sea ice loss while minimizing costs. We find that effective control is achievable for such a system, but the cost of reversing sea-ice loss nearly quadruples for an initial state that has just tipped as compared to a state before reaching the tipping point. We also show that thermal inertia may delay tipping leading to an overshoot of the critical GHG forcing threshold. This may offer a short intervention window (overshoot window) during which the control required to reverse sea-ice loss only scales linearly with intervention time. While systems with larger system inertia may have longer overshoot windows, this increased elbow room comes with a steeper rise in the requisite control once the intervention is delayed past this window. Additionally, we find that the requisite control to restore sea-ice is localized in the polar region.

This work presents a novel module, namely multi-branch concat (MBC), to process the input tensor and obtain the multi-scale feature map. The proposed MBC module brings new degrees of freedom (DoF) for the design of attention networks by allowing the type of transformation operators and the number of branches to be flexibly adjusted. Two important transformation operators, multiplex and split, are considered in this work, both of which can represent multi-scale features at a more granular level and increase the range of receptive fields. By integrating the MBC and attention module, a multi-branch attention (MBA) module is consequently developed to capture the channel-wise interaction of feature maps for establishing the long-range channel dependency. By substituting the 3x3 convolutions in the bottleneck blocks of the ResNet with the proposed MBA, a novel block namely efficient multi-branch attention (EMBA) is obtained, which can be easily plugged into the state-of-the-art backbone CNN models. Furthermore, a new backbone network called EMBANet is established by stacking the EMBA blocks. The proposed EMBANet is extensively evaluated on representative computer vision tasks including: classification, detection, and segmentation. And it demonstrates consistently superior performance over the popular backbones.

Hyperspectral images (HSIs) are often contaminated by a mixture of noises such as Gaussian noise, dead lines, stripes, and so on. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for HSI denoising and destriping, called NLTL2p, which consists of an orthogonal constrained minimization model and an iterative algorithm with convergence guarantees. The model of the proposed NLTL2p approach is built based on a new sparsity-enhanced Nonlocal Low-rank Tensor regularization and a tensor $\ell_{2,p}$ norm with $p\in(0,1)$. The low-rank constraints for HSI denoising utilize the spatial nonlocal self-similarity and spectral correlation of HSIs and are formulated based on independent higher-order singular value decomposition with sparsity enhancement on its core tensor to prompt more low-rankness. The tensor $\ell_{2,p}$ norm for HSI destriping is extended from the matrix $\ell_{2,p}$ norm. A proximal block coordinate descent algorithm is proposed in the NLTL2p approach to solve the resulting nonconvex nonsmooth minimization with orthogonal constraints. We show any accumulation point of the sequence generated by the proposed algorithm converges to a first-order stationary point, which is defined using three equalities of substationarity, symmetry, and feasibility for orthogonal constraints. In the numerical experiments, we compare the proposed method with state-of-the-art methods including a deep learning based method, and test the methods on both simulated and real HSI datasets. Our proposed NLTL2p method demonstrates outperformance in terms of metrics such as mean peak signal-to-noise ratio as well as visual quality.

Multi-squeezed states, also known as generalized squeezed states, are valuable quantum non-Gaussian resources, because they can feature non-classical properties such as large phase-space Wigner negativities. In this work, we introduce a novel shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) method for the fast preparation of multi-squeezed states. In contrast to previous STA methods, which rely on the use of counterdiabatic control to suppress unwanted non-adiabatic effects, our method simplifies the process and accelerates state preparation by selecting an appropriate sampling along a quantum evolution path. We demonstrate the high-fidelity and fast preparation of multi-squeezed states, as well as hybrid entangled states between a bosonic mode and a qubit.

Spinodal decomposition in multicomponent alloys has attracted increasing attention due to its beneficial effect on their mechanical and functional properties and potential applications. Both based on the Cahn-Hillard equation, the reference element method (REM) and the projection matrix method (PMM) are the two main methods to predict the occurrence of spinodal decomposition in multicomponent alloys. In this work, it is mathematically proven that the two methods are equivalent, and therefore the advanced results based on one method can be applied to the other. Based on these methods, the $Fe{}_{15}$Co${}_{15}$Ni${}_{35}$Cu${}_{35}$ multicomponent alloy is designed as a case study. Experimental results confirm the spinodal decomposition in the heat-treated alloy, and its strength and ductility are simultaneously enhanced. Excellence in a wide variety of medical applications poses considerable challenges for AI, requiring advanced reasoning, access to up-to-date medical knowledge and understanding of complex multimodal data. Gemini models, with strong general capabilities in multimodal and long-context reasoning, offer exciting possibilities in medicine. Building on these core strengths of Gemini, we introduce Med-Gemini, a family of highly capable multimodal models that are specialized in medicine with the ability to seamlessly use web search, and that can be efficiently tailored to novel modalities using custom encoders. We evaluate Med-Gemini on 14 medical benchmarks, establishing new state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance on 10 of them, and surpass the GPT-4 model family on every benchmark where a direct comparison is viable, often by a wide margin. On the popular MedQA (USMLE) benchmark, our best-performing Med-Gemini model achieves SoTA performance of 91.1% accuracy, using a novel uncertainty-guided search strategy. On 7 multimodal benchmarks including NEJM Image Challenges and MMMU (health & medicine), Med-Gemini improves over GPT-4V by an average relative margin of 44.5%. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Med-Gemini's long-context capabilities through SoTA performance on a needle-in-a-haystack retrieval task from long de-identified health records and medical video question answering, surpassing prior bespoke methods using only in-context learning. Finally, Med-Gemini's performance suggests real-world utility by surpassing human experts on tasks such as medical text summarization, alongside demonstrations of promising potential for multimodal medical dialogue, medical research and education. Taken together, our results offer compelling evidence for Med-Gemini's potential, although further rigorous evaluation will be crucial before real-world deployment in this safety-critical domain.

Recently, researchers have shown an increasing interest in automatically predicting the subjective evaluation for speech synthesis systems. This prediction is a challenging task, especially on the out-of-domain test set. In this paper, we proposed a novel fusion model for MOS prediction that combines supervised and unsupervised approaches. In the supervised aspect, we developed an SSL-based predictor called LE-SSL-MOS. The LE-SSL-MOS utilizes pre-trained self-supervised learning models and further improves prediction accuracy by utilizing the opinion scores of each utterance in the listener enhancement branch. In the unsupervised aspect, two steps are contained: we fine-tuned the unit language model (ULM) using highly intelligible domain data to improve the correlation of an unsupervised metric - SpeechLMScore. Another is that we utilized ASR confidence as a new metric with the help of ensemble learning. To our knowledge, this is the first architecture that fuses supervised and unsupervised methods for MOS prediction. With these approaches, our experimental results on the VoiceMOS Challenge 2023 show that LE-SSL-MOS performs better than the baseline. Our fusion system achieved an absolute improvement of 13% over LE-SSL-MOS on the noisy and enhanced speech track. Satellite-based greenhouse gases (GHG) sensing technologies play a critical role in the study of global carbon emissions and climate change. However, none of the existing satellite-based GHG sensing technologies can achieve the measurement of broad bandwidth, high temporal-spatial resolution, and high sensitivity at the same time. Recently, dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) has been proposed as a superior candidate technology for GHG sensing because it can measure broadband spectra with high temporal-spatial resolution and high sensitivity. The main barrier to DCS's display on satellites is its short measurement distance in open air achieved thus far. Prior research has not been able to implement DCS over 20 km of open-air path. Here, by developing a bistatic setup using time-frequency dissemination and high-power optical frequency combs, we have implemented DCS over a 113 km turbulent horizontal open-air path. Our experiment successfully measured GHG with 7 nm spectral bandwidth and a 10 kHz frequency and achieved a CO2 sensing precision of <2 ppm in 5 minutes and <0.6 ppm in 36 minutes. In integral geometry generalized with Aleksandrov's variational theory, Lutwak-Xi-Yang-Zhang \cite{LXYZ} recently opened the door to researching the cone-chord measures and its log-Minkowski problem stemming from the chord integrals, named as the chord log-Minkowski problem. In the smooth category, the solvability of the chord log-Minkowski problem is amounts to dealing with a new {M}onge-{A}mp\`ere equation involving a Riesz potential. In this paper, to study the regularity of the chord log-Minkowski problem, we first discover a novel result on the boundary smooth estimation of the Riesz potential. Based on this estimation, we obtain the regularity of the chord log-Minkowski problem from the point view of elliptic {M}onge-{A}mp\`ere equation and a nonlocal Gauss curvature flow equation. The field of topological photonics studies unique and robust photonic systems that are immune to defects and disorders due to the protection of their underlying topological phases. Mostly implemented in static systems, the studied topological phases are often defined in linear photonic band structures. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate Floquet Chern insulators in periodically driven nonlinear photonic crystals, where the topological phase is controlled by the polarization and the frequency of the driving field. Mediated by strong material nonlinearity, our system enters what we call the 'strong Floquet coupling regime', where the photonic Floquet bands cross and open new energy gaps with non-trivial topology as observed in our transient sum-frequency generation measurements. Current deep models provide remarkable object detection in terms of object classification and localization. However, estimating object rotation with respect to other visual objects in the visual context of an input image still lacks deep studies due to the unavailability of object datasets with rotation annotations. This paper tackles these two challenges to solve the rotation estimation of a parked bike with respect to its parking area. First, we leverage the power of 3D graphics to build a camera-agnostic well-annotated Synthetic Bike Rotation Dataset (SynthBRSet). Then, we propose an object-to-spot rotation estimator (OSRE) by extending the object detection task to further regress the bike rotations in two axes. Since our model is purely trained on synthetic data, we adopt image smoothing techniques when deploying it on real-world images. The proposed OSRE is evaluated on synthetic and real-world data providing promising results. We develop an efficient stochastic variance reduced gradient descent algorithm to solve the affine rank minimization problem consists of finding a matrix of minimum rank from linear measurements. The proposed algorithm as a stochastic gradient descent strategy enjoys a more favorable complexity than full gradients. It also reduces the variance of the stochastic gradient at each iteration and accelerate the rate of convergence. We prove that the proposed algorithm converges linearly in expectation to the solution under a restricted isometry condition. The numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm has a clearly advantageous balance of efficiency, adaptivity, and accuracy compared with other state-of-the-art greedy algorithms.

The dual Minkowski problem in the two-dimensional plane is studied in this paper. By combining the theoretical analysis and numerical estimation of an integral with parameters, we find the number of solutions to this problem for the constant dual curvature case when $04$ is also obtained. As an application, a result on the uniqueness and nonuniqueness of solutions to the $L_p$-Alexandrov problem is obtained for $p<0$.

In many applications, it is necessary to retrieve the sub-signal building blocks of a multi-component signal, which is usually non-stationary in real-world and real-life applications. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD), synchrosqueezing transform (SST), signal separation operation (SSO), and iterative filtering decomposition (IFD) have been proposed and developed for this purpose. However, these computational methods are restricted by the specification of well-separation of the sub-signal frequency curves for multi-component signals. On the other hand, the chirplet transform-based signal separation scheme (CT3S) that extends SSO from the two-dimensional "time-frequency" plane to the three-dimensional "time-frequency-chirp rate" space was recently proposed in our recent work to remove the frequency-separation specification, and thereby allowing "frequency crossing". The main objective of this present paper is to carry out an in-depth error analysis study of instantaneous frequency estimation and component recovery for the CT3S method.

Water splitting through efficient catalysts represents an ultimate solution for carbon neutrality within 40 years. To achieve this goal, amorphous photocatalysts are noted for their promising performances. Among them, the best known is black titania (amorphous TiOx, x < 2). However, despite the large number of studies on black titania, its color origin, structure-property relationship, and photocatalytic mechanism remain a topic of hot debate, largely due to the difficulty to calculate its precise electronic structure. Here, using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we report the precise electronic structures of black titania and further reveal the generic evolution pattern of the electronic structures of covalent compounds upon amorphization and reduction. Moreover, surface adsorption of the co-catalyst atoms (e.g., Pt) on amorphous substances is simulated for the first time: the disordered surface enables easy accommodation of the co-catalyst atoms, while the extended electronic states facilitate the separation of photo-induced electrons and holes, beneficial for hydrogen evolution. This study elucidates the workings of amorphous catalysts and offers practical guidance for enhancing their performances.

With the assumption that a video dataset is multimodality annotated in which auditory and visual modalities both are labeled or class-relevant, current multimodal methods apply modality fusion or cross-modality attention. However, effectively leveraging the audio modality in vision-specific annotated videos for action recognition is of particular challenge. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel audio-visual framework that effectively leverages the audio modality in any solely vision-specific annotated dataset. We adopt the language models (e.g., BERT) to build a semantic audio-video label dictionary (SAVLD) that maps each video label to its most K-relevant audio labels in which SAVLD serves as a bridge between audio and video datasets. Then, SAVLD along with a pretrained audio multi-label model are used to estimate the audio-visual modality relevance during the training phase. Accordingly, a novel learnable irrelevant modality dropout (IMD) is proposed to completely drop out the irrelevant audio modality and fuse only the relevant modalities. Moreover, we present a new two-stream video Transformer for efficiently modeling the visual modalities. To calculate nonlinear transport of space charge dominated beam in 6D phase spaces, a computer code package LEADS-v5 (Linear and Electrostatic Accelerator Dynamics Simulations) has been developed. The codes calculate particle motions in the beam transport systems consisting of electrostatic and magnetic focusing lenses, ion analyzers, multipoles and RF accelerating structures. The nonlinear forces of external electric/magnetic fields are analyzed by the Lie algebraic method, and the space charge forces are obtained by the particle in cell (PIC) scheme. In the codes, Uniform and Gaussian particle distributions can be chosen to generate randomly the particle initial coordinates. The optimization procedures are provided to make the beam optics designs reasonable and fast.
