The value of historical data for flood frequency analysis has been acknowledged and studied for a long time. A specific statistical framework must be used to comply with the censored nature of historical data, for which only floods large enough to induce written records or to trigger flood marks are usually recorded. It is assumed that all floods which exceeded a given perception threshold were recorded as written testimonies or flood marks. Conversely, all years without a flood record in the historical period are assumed to have had a maximum discharge below the perception threshold. This paper proposes a binomial model that explicitly recognizes the uncertain nature of both the perception threshold and the starting date of the historical period. This model is applied to a case study for the Rhône River at Beaucaire, France, where a long (1816–2020) systematic series of annual maximum discharges is available along with a collection of 13 historical floods from documentary evidence over 3 centuries (1500–1815). Results indicate that the inclusion of historical floods reduces the uncertainty of 100- or 1000-year flood quantiles, even when only the number of perception threshold exceedances is known. However, ignoring the uncertainty around the perception threshold leads to a noticeable underestimation of flood quantile uncertainty. A qualitatively similar conclusion is found when ignoring the uncertainty around the historical period length. However, its impact on flood quantile uncertainty appears to be much smaller than that of the perception threshold.

In this technical note, we introduce a web-based application, the BonaRes Knowledge Library (KLIB, https://klibrary.bonares.de, last access: 26 July 2023), for the compilation and classification of scientific publications on soil processes according to the specific site conditions and experimental boundary conditions. The tool was developed based on the understanding that experimental findings in soil science are highly dependent on soil type, land use, and climate. The KLIB, therefore, goes beyond other available digital libraries by providing metadata on the site conditions and experimental settings for each publication. A number of visualization tools have been developed in the form of graphical networks to illustrate, for example, publications sharing the same type of scientific questions or soil properties that are affected by different types of drivers. This should help to explore the contents of the literature database more efficiently in order to support and facilitate the literature search efforts of the users. The KLIB is designed as a collaborative effort to encourage soil scientists to participate by entering their own studies and extending the existing database.

Introduction The use of long-acting treatments is a common clinical practice in psychiatry. No disease insight and the risk of treatment discontinuation in a significant portion of our patients, increase the demand for psychiatric emergency and hospital admissions. Treatment adherence must be facilitated, taking into account possible side effects and patient´s subjective satisfaction. Objectives -Evaluate the type of long-acting intramuscular treatment in selected patients. -Evaluate the differences in treatment satisfaction between different types of long-acting intramuscular treatments as well as frequency of psychiatric emergency and hospital admissions in the last year. Methods We select patients with different severe mental disorders who stay in a Medium Stay Unit, Sociosanitary Community Residence, Supervise house and Residence for the elderly in Albacete (Spain); all of them, with intramuscular neuroleptic treatment (zuclopenthixol dihydrochloride, aripiprazole long acting, palmitate paliperidone monthly, 3-monthly and 6-monthly) at least 1 year. We evaluate their sociodemographic characteristics, the satisfaction questionnaire with the treatment (TSQM-9) and the rate of psychiatric emergencies and admissions after current intramuscular treatment in last year. Results We have selected 57 patients with an average age of 45.86. 78.94% with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, 12.28% with schizoaffective disorder, 5.26% bipolar disorder and 3.5% unspecified psychotic disorder. We can see in the graphics below that the longer duration of the intramuscular treatment, the greater satisfaction in all the items of the TSQM-9 questionnaire. 31% of the patients with zuclopenthixol dihydrochloride treatment, have gone to psychiatric emergencies and 28% of psychiatric admissions in the last year.18% of the patients with aripiprazole long acting, 17% with paliperidone palmitate long acting-monthly and 12% de 3-monthly have gone to psychiatric emergencies and 15%, 12% and 12% needed psychiatric admissions respectively. Patients with palmitate long acting-monthly have not emergencies or psychiatric admissions in the last year. Abstract Quantum circuits interact with the environment via several temperature-dependent degrees of freedom. Multiple experiments to-date have shown that most properties of superconducting devices appear to plateau out at T ≈ 50 mK – far above the refrigerator base temperature. This is for example reflected in the thermal state population of qubits, in excess numbers of quasiparticles, and polarisation of surface spins – factors contributing to reduced coherence. We demonstrate how to remove this thermal constraint by operating a circuit immersed in liquid 3He. This allows to efficiently cool the decohering environment of a superconducting resonator, and we see a continuous change in measured physical quantities down to previously unexplored sub-mK temperatures. The 3He acts as a heat sink which increases the energy relaxation rate of the quantum bath coupled to the circuit a thousand times, yet the suppressed bath does not introduce additional circuit losses or noise. Such quantum bath suppression can reduce decoherence in quantum circuits and opens a route for both thermal and coherence management in quantum processors.

Abstract Background Long-term sequelae are frequent and often disabling after epidermal necrolysis (Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)). However, consensus on the modalities of management of these sequelae is lacking. Objectives We conducted an international multicentric DELPHI exercise to establish a multidisciplinary expert consensus to standardize recommendations regarding management of SJS/TEN sequelae. Methods Participants were sent a survey via the online tool “Survey Monkey” consisting of 54 statements organized into 8 topics: general recommendations, professionals involved, skin, oral mucosa and teeth, eyes, genital area, mental health, and allergy workup. Participants evaluated the level of appropriateness of each statement on a scale of 1 (extremely inappropriate) to 9 (extremely appropriate). Intro: Argentina is one of South America's leading milk and pork producers, yet the data for antimicrobial usage and resistance in these sectors is extremely limited. Here we report third-generation cephalosporin resistance (3GC-R) rates among E. coli from pigs and dairy cattle in two Argentinian regions (La Plata and Rio Cuarto) and the resistance mechanisms found. Methods: Samples were from effluent and faecally-contaminated near-animal environments collected using sterile boot-socks, submerged in 10x w/v PBS and made to 25% v/v glycerol; 20μL was spread on Chromagar-3GCR. Up to two 3GC- R isolates representing each positive sample were sequenced (Illumina) following deduplication at farm level using multiplex β-lactamase gene PCR. Findings: A total of 413 samples across 40 pig farms (291 La Plata, 122 Rio Cuarto) and 404 samples across 30 dairy cattle farms (286 La Plata, 118 Rio Cuarto) were collected. In La Plata, 29.7% of cattle and 51.2% of pig samples were positive for 3GC-R E. coli. In Rio Cuarto, resistance was more prevalent: 55.1% and 77.9% positivity in cattle and pig samples, respectively. Sequencing 131 representative 3GC-R isolates revealed a wide range of 3GC-R mechanisms, dominated by CTX-M variants (73% of isolates); specificity at the level of animal species was seen. This paper deals with the comparison of three condensation systems for the heat dissipation in a solar power plant: wet system, dry system and hybrid system based on the pre-cooling of the air in an adiabatic panel located in the entrance section of a dry system. Energy, exergy and environmental (3E) analyses were conducted to assess the influence of the condensation system on the power plant performance. The Andasol I plant located in Granada (Spain), with a net power capacity of 50 MWe, is used as a real reference case of a concentrated solar power station. The cycle refrigerated with a cooling tower achieves a lower pressure of condensation, followed by the hybrid and dry system. As the pressure decreases, the efficiency of the cycle increases and also the power generated, being 12.60% in the case of cooling tower and 4.65% in the hybrid system with respect the dry condenser. A 71.74% of water usage savings by the hybrid system carries a 7.06% of net power production with regard of the cooling tower configuration. The exergetic performance of the plant is 73.77% for the wet system, 69.21% for the hybrid and 68.46% for the dry system.

In the vicinity of orographic barriers, interactions between mountains and prevailing winds can enhance rainfall and generate strong spatial gradients of precipitation. Orographic rainfall is still poorly quantified despite being an important driver of headwater catchment hydrology, in particular when considered at high space-time resolution. In this paper, we propose a complete framework for the observation and quantification of orographic rainfall gradients at the local scale. This framework, based on the stochastic interpolation of drop-counting rain gauge observations, provides reconstructions of local rain fields at high space-time resolution. It allows us to capture the life-cycle of individual rain cells, which typically occurs at a spatial scale of approximately 1–5 km and a temporal scale of approximately 5–15 min over our study area. In addition, the resulting rain estimates can be used to investigate how rainfall gradients develop during rain storms, and to provide better input data to drive hydrological models. The proposed framework is presented in the form of a proof-of-concept case study aimed at exploring orographic rain gradients in Mānoa Valley, on the leeward side of the Island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, USA. Results show that our network of eight rain gauges captured rainfall variations over the 6 × 5 km2 study area, and that stochastic interpolation successfully leverages these in-situ data to produce rainfall maps at 200 m × 1 min resolution. Benchmarking against Kriging shows better performance of stochastic interpolation in reproducing key statistics of high-resolution rain fields, in particular rain intermittency and low intensities. This leads to an overall enhancement of rain prediction at ungauged locations.

To support calibration and validation of satellite sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals, over 60 high-resolution SST (HRSST) drifting buoys were deployed at sea between 2012 and 2017. Their data record is reviewed here. It is confirmed that sea state and immersion depth play an important role in understanding the data collected by such buoys and that the SST sensors need adequate insulation. In addition, calibration verification of three recovered drifters suggests that the sensor drift is low, albeit negative at around −0.01 K year−1. However, the statistical significance of these results is limited, and the calibration procedure could not be exactly reproduced, introducing additional uncertainties into this drift assessment. Based on lessons learnt from these initial buoys, a new sensor package for the Surface Velocity Platform with Barometer (SVP-B) was designed to serve calibration of SST retrievals by European Union's Copernicus satellites. The novel sensor package includes an HRSST sensor calibrated by a metrology laboratory. The sensor includes a pressure probe to monitor immersion depth in calm water and acquires SST data at 1 Hz over a 5 min interval every hour. This enables the derivation of mean SST as well as several percentiles of the SST distribution. The HRSST sensor is calibrated with an uncertainty better than 0.01 K. Analysis of the data collected by two prototypes deployed in the Mediterranean Sea shows that the buoys are able to capture small-scale SST variations. These variations are found to be smaller when the sea state is well mixed and when the buoys are located within eddy cores. This affects the drifter SST data representativeness, which is an aspect of importance for optimal use of these data.

Post-fire management should be based on a proper evaluation of fire damage (burn severity), mainly for Large Fires (>500 ha). Several methodologies have been developed based on remote sensing information validated with fieldwork. The most widespread techniques was the assessment of fire severity indices obtained from remote sensing. It allow a quick assessment of large areas at affordable costs, although the analysis of soil burn severity and the degree of agreement with the ground truth is not fully reliable. Our study case was the Donceles fire (summer 2012, Hellín, Albacete). The post-fire restoration planning, emergency actions, was based on cartographic information of burn severity. To optimize results in a short time and low budget, we applied methodologies in a similar way other similar fires in the Mediterranean peninsular area. We assessed burn severity by using spectral indices (NDVI, dNBR, RdNBR and RBR) and images from Landsat-7 (including banded) and Deimos-1. For each index, we developed both supervised and unsupervised classifications, using field data as training areas. The highest overall reliability values were found for dNBR (79%) and NBR (71%), obtaining low values with RdNBR. In all cases, the reliability was higher using the supervised classification, so using real-ground data to identify the categories of severity to be discriminated. We conclude the need to extend fire studies in our area to improve the reliability of the fire severity assessment obtained from spectral indexes, thus establishing a protocol of data collection and standard methodology of calculation adapted to the characteristics of the region.

A global pigment database consisting of 35 634 pigment suites measured by high performance liquid chromatography was assembled in support of the MARine Ecosytem DATa (MAREDAT) initiative. These data originate from 136 field surveys within the global ocean, were solicited from investigators and databases, compiled, and then quality controlled. Nearly one quarter of the data originates from the Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche (LOV), with an additional 17% and 19% stemming from the US JGOFS and LTER programs, respectively. The MAREDAT pigment database provides high quality measurements of the major taxonomic pigments including chlorophylls a and b, 19'-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, alloxanthin, divinyl chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, lutein, peridinin, prasinoxanthin, violaxanthin and zeaxanthin, which may be used in varying combinations to estimate phytoplankton community composition. Quality control measures consisted of flagging samples that had a total chlorophyll a concentration of zero, had fewer than four reported accessory pigments, or exceeded two standard deviations of the log-linear regression of total chlorophyll a with total accessory pigment concentrations. We anticipate the MAREDAT pigment database to be of use in the marine ecology, remote sensing and ecological modeling communities, where it will support model validation and advance our global perspective on marine biodiversity. Replication of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an error-prone process. This high error rate results in the emergence of viral populations (quasispecies) within hosts and contributes to interhost variability. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both viral and host factors contribute to this viral diversity, which can ultimately affect disease outcome. As the host’s immune response is an important correlate of infection outcome for HCV, many of these viral variations are strongly influenced by T-cell immune pressure and accordingly constitute an efficient strategy to subvert such pressures (viral adaptations). This paper will review the data on viral diversity observed between and within hosts infected with HCV from the acute to the chronic stage of infection and will focus on viral adaptation to the host’s T-cell immune response.
