4. Optimization and analysis of bioethanol production from cassava starch hydrolysis

Abstract

Current ethanol production processes utilizing crops such as sugar cane and corn starch has been well established over the decade. Other crops such as cassava, is a potential candidate in producing ethanol. However, thermal processes are required to hydrolyze starch for the production of fermentable sugars. The processes are energy intensive and could lead to undesirable by-products generation. In this work, the hydrolysis of cassava starch is studied following an experimental design as a statistical problem solving approach. Central composite design (CCD) is used in order to select the most important variables from the simultaneous study on the effect and influence of operating conditions of bioreactor utilized, i.e. pH, temperature and substrate concentration, as well as to optimize the process of cassava starch hydrolysis. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the cassava starch hydrolysis is enhanced by pH and temperature. Model validations show good agreement between experimental results and the predicted responses.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyse the application of the Half-Sweep Gauss-Seidel (HSGS) method by using the Half-sweep approximation equation based on backward difference (BD) and repeated trapezoidal (RT) formulas to solve linear fredholm integro-differential equations of first order. The formulation and implementation of the Full-Sweep Gauss-Seidel (FSGS) and Half-Sweep Gauss-Seidel (HSGS) methods are also presented. The HSGS method has been shown to very fast as compared to the FSGS methods. Some numerical tests were illustrated to show that the HSGS method is superior to the FSGS method.

Abstract

The challenge of developing adaptive, responsive low-energy architecture requires new knowledge about the complex and dynamic interaction between envelope architecture, optimization between competing environmental performance metrics (light, heat and wind indices) and local climate variables. Advances in modeling the geometry of building envelopes and control technologies for adaptive buildings now permit the sophisticated evaluation of alternative envelope configurations for a set of performance criteria. This paper reports on a study of the parametric control of a building envelope based on moveable facade components, acting as a shading device to reduce thermal gain within the building. This is investigated using two alternative tiling strategies, a hexagonal tiling and a pentagonal tiling, considering the component design, supporting structure and control methods.
