Polarization flutter, produced by an applied AC electric field drives an equilibrium ferroelectric nematic ($\mathrm{N_F}$) liquid crystal (LC) through a transition into a dissipative active ferroelectric nematic state exhibiting strong elasto-hydrodynamic intermolecular interaction. In such a fluttering ferroelectric, the typical equilibrium $\mathrm{N_F}$ textural features adopted to reduce electrostatic energy, such as preferences for director bend, and alignment of polarization parallel to LC/air interfaces, are overcome, giving way to nonequilibrium conjugate structures in which director splay, and alignment of polarization normal to $\mathrm{N_F}$/air interfaces are preferred. We show that stable, freely suspended liquid crystal films can be made from the ferroelectric nematic ($\mathrm{N_F}$) phase and from the recently discovered polar, lamellar $\mathrm{SmZ_A}$ and $\mathrm{SmA_F}$ phases. The $\mathrm{N_F}$ films display two-dimensional, smectic-like parabolic focal conic textures comprising director/polarization bend that are a manifestation of the electrostatic suppression of director splay in the film plane. In the $\mathrm{SmZ_A}$ and $\mathrm{SmA_F}$ phases, the smectic layers orient preferentially normal to the film surfaces, a condition never found in typical thermotropic or lyotropic lamellar LC phases, with the $\mathrm{SmZ_A}$ films exhibiting focal-conic fan textures mimicking the appearance of typical smectics in glass cells when the layers are oriented normal to the plates, and the $\mathrm{SmA_F}$ films showing a texture of plaquettes of uniform in-plane orientation where both bend and splay are suppressed, separated by grain boundaries. The $\mathrm{SmA_F}$ phase can also be drawn into thin filaments, in which X-ray scattering reveals that the smectic layer planes are normal to the filament axis. Remarkably, the filaments are mechanically stable even if they break, forming free-standing, fluid filaments supported only at one end. The unique architectures of these films and filaments are stabilized by the electrostatic self-interaction of the liquid crystal polarization field, which enables the formation of confined, fluid structures that are fundamentally different from those of their counterparts made using previously known liquid crystal phases., Comment: Main paper 29 pages (5 figures); Supplement: 9 pages (9 figures)

The current intense study of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals was initiated by the observation of the same ferroelectric nematic phase in two independently discovered organic rod-shaped mesogenic compounds, RM734 and DIO. We recently reported that the compound RM734 also exhibits a monotropic, low-temperature, antiferroelectric phase having reentrant isotropic symmetry (the $I_A$ phase), the formation of which is facilitated to a remarkable degree by doping with small (below $1\%$) amounts of the ionic liquid ${\rm BMIM-PF}_6$. Here we report similar phenomenology in DIO, showing that this reentrant isotropic behavior is not only a property of RM734 but is rather a more general, material-independent feature of ferroelectric nematic mesogens. We find that the reentrant isotropic phases observed in RM734 and DIO are similar but not identical, adding two new phases to the ferroelectric nematic realm. We report a transition from the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal ($N_F$) phase to a lower-temperature, antiferroelectric fluid phase having reentrant isotropic symmetry ($I_A$), in the liquid crystal compound RM734 doped with small concentrations of the ionic liquids BMIM or EMIM. Even a trace amount of ionic liquid dopant facilitates the kinetic pathway for the transition from the $N_F$ to the $I_A$, enabling simple cooling to produce this isotropic fluid phase rather than resulting in crystallization. The $I_A$ was also obtained in the absence of specific ionic liquid doping by appropriate temperature cycling in three distinct, as-synthesized-and-purified batches of RM734, two commercial and one from our laboratory. Mechanically quenching a thin film of smectic-C liquid crystal results in the formation of a dense array of thousands of topological defects in the director field. The subsequent rapid coarsening of the film texture by the mutual annihilation of defects of opposite sign has been captured using high-speed, polarized light video microscopy. The temporal evolution of the texture has been characterized using an object-detection convolutional neural network to determine the defect locations, and a binary classification network customized to evaluate the brush orientation dynamics around the defects in order to determine their topological signs. At early times following the quench, inherent limits on the spatial resolution result in undercounting of the defects and deviations from expected behavior. Numerous measurements of the dielectric constant $\epsilon$ of the recently discovered ferroelectric nematic ($N_F$) liquid crystal (LC) phase report extraordinarily large values of $\epsilon^\prime$ (up to ~30,000). We show that what is in fact being measured in such experiments is the high capacitance of the non-ferroelectric, interfacial, insulating layers of nanoscale thickness that bound the $N_F$ material in typical cells. We analyze a parallel-plate cell filled with $N_F$ material of high-polarization $\mathbf{P}$, oriented parallel to the plates at zero applied voltage. Minimization of the dominant electrostatic energy renders $\mathbf{P}$ spatially uniform and orients it to make the electric field in the $N_F$ as small as possible, a condition under which the voltage applied to the cell appears almost entirely across the high-capacity interfacial layers. This coupling of orientation and charge creates a combined polarization-external capacitance (PCG) Goldstone reorientation mode requiring applied voltages orders of magnitude smaller than that of the $N_F$ layer alone to effectively transport charge across the $N_F$ layer. The $N_F$ layer acts as a low-value resistor and the interfacial capacitors as reversible energy storage reservoirs, lowering the restoring force (mass) of the PCG mode and producing strong reactive dielectric behavior. Analysis of data from several experiments on ferroelectric liquid crystals (chiral smectics C, bent-core smectics, and the $N_F$ phase supports the PCG model, showing that deriving dielectric constants from electrical impedance measurements of high-polarization ferroelectric LCs, without properly accounting for the self-screening effects of polarization charge and the capacitive contributions of interfacial layers, can result in overestimation of the $\epsilon^\prime$ values of the LC by many orders of magnitude., Comment: 30 pages of text, 11 figures, 59 references (47 pages total)

Computer simulations are used to characterize the entropic force of one or more polymers tethered to the tip of a hard conical object that interact with a nearby hard flat surface. Pruned-enriched-Rosenbluth-method (PERM) Monte Carlo simulations are used to calculate the variation of the conformational free energy, $F$, of a hard-sphere polymer with respect to cone-tip-to-surface distance, $h$, from which the variation of the entropic force, $f\equiv |dF/dh|$, with $h$ is determined. We consider the following cases: (1) a single freely-jointed tethered chain, (2) a single semiflexible tethered chain, and (3) several freely-jointed chains of equal length each tethered to the cone tip. The simulation results are used to test the validity of a prediction by Maghrebi et al. (EPL, 96, 66002(2011); Phys. Rev. E 86, 061801 (2012)) that $f\propto (\gamma_\infty-\gamma_0) h^{-1}$, where $\gamma_0$ and $\gamma_\infty$ are universal scaling exponents for the partition function of the tethered polymer for $h=0$ and $h=\infty$, respectively. The measured functions $f(h)$ are generally consistent with the predictions, with small quantitative discrepancies arising from the approximations employed in the theory. Near-Earth asteroid (3200) Phaethon is an active asteroid with a dust tail repeatedly observed over the past decade for 3 days during each perihelion passage down to a heliocentric distance of 0.14 au. The mechanism causing the activity is still debated, and the suggested mechanisms lack clear supporting evidence. Phaethon has been identified as the likely parent body of the annual Geminid meteor shower, making it one of the few active asteroids associated with a meteoroid stream. Its low albedo and B-type reflectance spectrum indicates that Phaethon's composition is similar to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, but a connection to a specific meteorite group is ambiguous due to the lack of diagnostic absorption features. In this study, we analyze the mid-infrared emissivity spectrum of Phaethon and find that it is closely associated with the Yamato-group (CY) of carbonaceous chondrites. The CY chondrites represent primitive carbonaceous material that experienced early aqueous alteration and subsequent late-stage thermal metamorphism. Minerals in these meteorites, some of which we identify in Phaethon's spectrum, show evidence of thermal decomposition; notably, the dehydroxylation and transformation of phyllosilicates into poorly crystalline olivine. Additionally, sulfides and carbonates in CYs are known release S2and CO2 gas upon heating to ~700oC. We show that Phaethon's surface temperature during its observed window of activity is consistent with the thermal decomposition temperatures of several components in CY meteorites. All of these lines of evidence are strong indicators that gas release from thermal decomposition reactions is responsible for Phaethon's activity. We report the smectic $A_F$, a new liquid crystal phase of the ferroelectric nematic realm. The smectic $A_F$ is a phase of small polar, rod-shaped molecules which form two-dimensional fluid layers spaced by approximately the mean molecular length. The phase is uniaxial, with the molecular director, the local average long-axis orientation, normal to the layer planes, and ferroelectric, with a spontaneous electric polarization parallel to the director. Polarization measurements indicate almost complete polar ordering of the $\sim 10$ Debye longitudinal molecular dipoles, and hysteretic polarization reversal with a coercive field of about $2 \times 10^5$ V/m is observed. The smectic $A_F$ phase appears upon cooling in two binary mixtures of partially fluorinated mesogens: 2N/DIO, exhibiting a nematic ($N$) -- smectic $Z_A$ (Sm$Z_A$) -- ferroelectric nematic ($N_F$) -- smectic $A_F$ (Sm$A_F$) phase sequence; and 7N/DIO, exhibiting an $N$ -- Sm$Z_A$ -- Sm$A_F$ phase sequence. Thermal infrared emission and thermophysical modeling techniques are powerful tools in deciphering the surface properties of asteroids. The near-Earth asteroid (3200) Phaethon is an active asteroid with a very small perihelion distance and is likely the source of the Geminid meteor shower. We estimate and interpret the thermal inertia of this extraordinary asteroid using observations that span ten distinct sightings. The variation in thermal inertia over these sightings is inconsistent with the expected temperature-dependent thermal inertia theorized from radiative heat transfer within the regolith. Thus, we test whether the variation in thermal inertia can be explained by modeling a regolith layer over bedrock and two spatially heterogeneous scenarios. We find that the model in which Phaethon's north and south hemispheres have distinctly different thermophysical properties can sufficiently explain the thermal-inertias determined herein. In particular, we find that a boundary located between latitudes -30 deg and +10 deg separates fine-grained southern latitudes from a northern hemisphere that is dominated by coarse-grained regolith and/or a high coverage of porous boulders. We have structurally characterized the liquid crystal phase that appears as an intermediate state when a dielectric nematic, having polar disorder of its molecular dipoles, transitions to the almost perfectly polar-ordered ferroelectric nematic. This intermediate phase, which fills a 100-year-old void in the taxonomy of smectics and which we term the "smectic $Z_A$", is antiferroelectric, with the nematic director and polarization oriented parallel to smectic layer planes, and the polarization alternating in sign from layer to layer. The period of this polarization wave ($\sim$180 A) is mesoscopic, corresponding to $\sim$40 molecules side-by-side, indicating that this lamellar structure is collectively stabilized. The organic mesogens RM734 and DIO are members of separate molecular families featuring distinct molecular structures. These families, at the present time, are the only ones known to exhibit a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal (LC) phase. Here we present an experimental investigation of the phase diagram and electro-optics of binary mixtures of RM734 and DIO. We observe paraelectric nematic (N) and ferroelectric nematic (NF) phases in both materials, each of which exhibits complete miscibility across the phase diagram, showing that the paraelectric and ferroelectric are the same phases in RM734 as in DIO. Remarkably, these molecules form ideal mixtures with respect to both the paraelectric-ferroelectric nematic phase behavior and the ferroelectric polarization density of the mixtures, the principal order parameter of the transition. Ideal mixing is also manifested in the orientational viscosity, and the onset of glassy dynamics at low temperature. This behavior is attributable in part to the similarity of their overall molecular shape and net longitudinal dipole moment (~ 11 Debye), and to a common tendency for head-to-tail molecular association. In contrast, the significant difference in molecular structures leads to poor solubility in the crystal phases, enhancing the stability of the ferroelectric nematic phase at low temperature in the mixtures and making possible room temperature electro-optic effects. Machine learning techniques have been developed to identify inclusions on the surface of freely suspended smectic liquid crystal films imaged by reflected light microscopy. The experimental images are preprocessed using Canny edge detection and then passed to a radial kernel support vector machine (SVM) trained to recognize circular islands and droplets. The SVM is able to identify these objects of interest with an accuracy that far exceeds that of conventional tracking software, especially when the background image is non-uniform or when the target features are in close proximity to one another. Asteroid surfaces are subjected to mechanical weathering processes that result in the development and evolution of regolith. Two proposed mechanisms--impact bombardment and thermal fatigue--have been proposed as viable and dominant weathering processes. Previously, we compiled and estimated thermal inertias of several hundred asteroids (mostly in the main-belt) for which we determined dependencies on temperature, diameter, and rotation period. In this work, we estimate grain sizes of asteroid regoliths from this large thermal inertia dataset using thermal conductivity models. Following our previous work we perform multi-variate linear model fits to the grain size dataset and quantify its dependency on diameter and rotation period. We find that the best-fit model fit indicates that asteroid grain sizes are inversely dependent on object size for <10 km asteroids and exhibits no relationship above this size cutoff. Rotation period and grain size show a positive relationship when the rotation period is greater than ~5 hr, and an inverse relationship below this rotation period. We conclude that both impact weathering and thermal fatigue are significant regolith evolution mechanisms. Furthermore, we run post-hoc t-tests between spectral groups to identify compositional differences among our asteroid set. We use double-resonant two-photon laser spectroscopy to measure the dynamic scalar polarizability of the rubidium 5$D_{3/2}$ level, $\alpha^{S}_{5D_{3/2}}$, at a wavelength of $\lambda=1064$~nm. Since $\lambda$ is shorter than the photoionization (PI) limit of the Rb 5$D_{3/2}$ level, $\alpha^{S}_{5D_{3/2}}$ depends on both bound-bound and bound-free transition matrix elements. The level also undergoes significant broadening due to PI. The $1064$-nm field is applied in the form of a deep optical lattice ($\sim10^{5}$~photon recoils) generated by an in-vacuum field-enhancement cavity. In our spectroscopic method, we use known dynamic polarizabilities to eliminate the need to measure the light intensity. Our method yields, in atomic units, $\alpha^{S}_{5D_{3/2}}=-524(17)$, in agreement with estimates. Additionally, we extract the $5D_{3/2}$ photoionization cross section $\sigma$ at $1064$~nm from spectral linewidths; we find $\sigma=44(1)$~Mb.

The thermal inertia of an asteroid is an indicator of the thermophysical properties of the regolith and is determined by the size of grains on the surface. Previous thermophysical modeling studies of asteroids have identified or suggested that object size, rotation period, and heliocentric distance (a proxy for temperature) as important factors that separately influence thermal inertia. In this work we present new thermal inertias for 239 asteroids and model all three factors in a multi-variate model of thermal inertia. Using multi-epoch infrared data of a large (239) set of objects observed by WISE, we derive the size, albedo, thermal inertia, surface roughness, and sense of spin using a thermophysical modelling approach that doesn't require a priori knowledge of an object's shape or spin axis direction. Our thermal inertia results are consistent with previous values from the literature for similarly sized asteroids, and we identify an excess of retrograde rotators among main-belt asteroids < 8 km. We then combine our results with thermal inertias from the literature to construct a multi-variate model and quantify the dependency on asteroid diameter, rotation period, and surface temperature. We develop a formalism for photoionization (PI) and potential energy curves (PECs) of Rydberg atoms in ponderomotive optical lattices and apply it to examples covering several regimes of the optical-lattice depth. The effect of lattice-induced PI on Rydberg-atom lifetime ranges from noticeable to highly dominant when compared with natural decay. The PI behavior is governed by the generally rapid decrease of the PI cross sections as a function of angular-momentum ($\ell$), and by lattice-induced $\ell$-mixing across the optical-lattice PECs. In GHz-deep lattices, $\ell$-mixing leads to a rich PEC structure, and the significant low-$\ell$ PI cross sections are distributed over many lattice-mixed Rydberg states. In lattices less than several tens-of-MHz deep, atoms on low-$\ell$ PECs are essentially $\ell$-mixing-free and maintain large PI cross sections, while atoms on high-$\ell$ PECs trend towards being PI-free. Characterization of PI in GHz-deep Rydberg-atom lattices may be beneficial for optical control and quantum-state manipulation of Rydberg atoms, while data on PI in shallower lattices are potentially useful in high-precision spectroscopy and quantum-computing applications of lattice-confined Rydberg atoms.

We show that surface interactions can vectorially structure the three-dimensional polariza-tion field of a ferroelectric fluid. The contact between a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal and a surface with in-plane polarity generates a preferred in-plane orientation of the polarization field at that interface. This is a route to the formation of fluid or glassy monodomains of high polarization without the need for electric field poling. For example, unidirectional buffing of polyimide films on planar surfaces to give quadrupolar in-plane anisotropy also induces mac-roscopic in-plane polar order at the surfaces, enabling the formation of a variety of azimuthal polar director structures in the cell interior, including uniform and twisted states. In a {\pi}-twist cell, obtained with antiparallel, unidirectional buffing on opposing surfaces, we demonstrate three distinct modes of ferroelectric nematic electro-optic response: intrinsic, viscosity-limited, field-induced molecular reorientation; field-induced motion of domain walls separating twist-ed states of opposite chirality; and propagation of polarization reorientation solitons from the cell plates to the cell center upon field reversal. Chirally doped ferroelectric nematics in anti-parallel-rubbed cells produce Grandjean textures of helical twist that can be unwound via field-induced polar surface reorientation transitions. The near-Earth objects (NEOs) (3200) Phaethon and (155140) 2005 UD are thought to share a common origin, with the former exhibiting dust activity at perihelion that is thought to directly supply the Geminid meteor stream. Both of these objects currently have very small perihelion distances, which results in them having perihelion temperatures of or exceeding 1000 K. The current activity from Phaethon is relevant to the destruction of NEOs close to the Sun, which most likely has produced meteor streams linked to asteroids in the past. We model the past thermal characteristics of Phaethon and 2005 UD using a combination of a thermophysical model (TPM) and orbital integrations of each object. Temperature characteristics such as maximum daily temperature, maximum thermal gradient, and temperature at varying depths are extracted from the model, which is run for a predefined set of a and e. Next, dynamical integrations of orbital clones of Phaethon and 2005 UD are used to estimate the past orbital elements of each object. These dynamical results are then combined with the temperature characteristics to model the past evolution of thermal characteristics such as maximum (and minimum) surface temperature and thermal gradient. We find that dwarf planet (2) Pallas is unlikely to be the parent body for Phaethon and 2005 UD, and it is more likely that the source is in the inner part of the asteroid belt. The orbital histories of Phaethon and 2005 UD are characterized by cyclic changes in, resulting in perihelia values periodically shifting between present-day values and 0.3 au. We find that the subsurface temperatures are too large over this timescale for water ice to be stable unless actively supplied somehow. The near-surface thermal gradients strongly suggest that thermal fracturing may be very effective at breaking down surface regolith., Comment: accepted 9.May.2021

Smectic liquid crystal films a few molecular layers thick that are freely suspended in air are used as a model system to study the coalescence of fluids in two dimensions. High-speed video microscopy is used to observe the coalescence of islands, which are thicker, disk-shaped regions of the film, in a process driven by the line tension associated with edge dislocations along the island boundaries and limited by viscous dissipation in the liquid crystal and in the surrounding air. The early time growth of the bridge connecting the merging islands reveals much slower dynamics than predicted by Hopper's classical hydrodynamic model of coalescence of two infinitely long, fluid cylinders in vacuum, a discrepancy proposed to be due to significant dissipation in the background film and in the air that is not included in Hopper's theory. At late times, the elliptical merged island relaxes exponentially to a circular shape, at rates that are described quantitatively by a model originally developed for the evolution of fluid domains in Langmuir films., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We report the experimental determination of the structure and response to applied electric field of the lower-temperature nematic phase of the previously reported calamitic compound 4-[(4-nitrophenoxy)carbonyl]phenyl2,4-dimethoxybenzoate (RM734). We exploit its electro-optics to visualize the appearance, in the absence of applied field, of a permanent electric polarization density, manifested as a spontaneously broken symmetry in distinct domains of opposite polar orientation. Polarization reversal is mediated by field-induced domain wall movement, making this phase ferroelectric, a 3D uniaxial nematic having a spontaneous, reorientable, polarization locally parallel to the director. This polarization density saturates at a low temperature value of ~ 6 microcoulombs/cm-sqd, the largest ever measured for an organic material or for any fluid. This polarization is comparable to that of solid state ferroelectrics, and is close to the average value obtained by assuming perfect, polar alignment of molecular long axes in the nematic. We find a host of spectacular optical and hydrodynamic effects driven by ultra-low applied field (E~1V/cm), produced by the coupling of the large polarization to nematic birefringence and flow. Electrostatic self-interaction of the polarization charge renders the transition from the nematic phase mean-field-like and weakly first-order, and controls the director field structure of the ferroelectric phase. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulation reveals short-range polar molecular interactions that favor ferroelectric ordering, including a tendency for head-to-tail association into polar, chain-like assemblies having polar lateral correlations. We experimentally investigate a uniform pulse sequence in which atom interference is realized using the temporal matter-wave Talbot effect in an atom-optic kicked rotor system. Multi-path interference is obtained in asymmetric configuration with momentum differences up to $\pm$14 $\hbar k$, by virtue of Talbot resonance. We experimentally confirm the theoretical limit placed on the performance of this interferometer by the finite momentum distribution of the initial ensemble consisting of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). This limitation on sensitivity, occurring due to the degradation of resonant dynamics is also important in the realization of a one-dimensional continuous-time quantum walk in the implementation of quantum search algorithms., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We argue that embryological morphogenesis provides a model of how massive swarms of microscopic agents can be coordinated to assemble complex, multiscale hierarchical structures. This is accomplished by understanding natural morphogenetic processes in mathematical terms, abstracting from the biological specifics, and implementing these mathematical principles in artificial systems. We have developed a notation based on partial differential equations for artificial morphogenesis and have designed a prototype morphogenetic programming language, which permits precise description of morphogenetic algorithms and their automatic translation to simulation software. Morphogenetic programming is illustrated by two examples: (1) use of a modified flocking algorithm to route dense fiber bundles between regions of an artificial cortex while avoiding other bundles; (2) use of the clock-and-wavefront model of spinal segmentation for the assembly of the segmented spine of an insect-like robot body and for assembling segmented legs on the robot's spine. Finally, we show how a variation of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) swarm robotic control can be applied to the global-to-local compilation problem, that is, the derivation of individual agent control from global PDE specifications., Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures

The 0-1 integer linear programming feasibility problem is an important NP-complete problem. This paper proposes a continuous-time dynamical system for solving that problem without getting trapped in non-solution local minima. First, the problem is transformed to an easier form in linear time. Then, we propose an "impulse algorithm" to escape from local traps and show its performance is better than randomization for escaping traps. Second, we present the time-to-solution distribution of the impulse algorithm and compare it with exhaustive search to see its advantages. Third, we show that the fractional size of the basin of attraction of the global minimum is significantly larger than $2^{-N}$, the corresponding discrete probability for exhaustive search. Finally, we conduct a case study to show that the location of the basin is independent of different dimensions. These findings reveal a better way to solve the 0-1 integer linear programming feasibility problem continuously and show that its cost could be less than discrete methods in average cases.

Collisions with background atoms are known to induce a significant shift in the frequency of state-of-the-art optical atomic clocks and contribute to state decoherence in cold atom experiments. The effects of these collisions can be quantified by measuring their cross sections. We experimentally measured the collision cross section between $^{88}$Sr$-$N$_{2}$ in a Magneto-Optical Trap (MOT). The measurement was carried out by monitoring the atom number loss rate as a function of background pressure of N$_{2}$ and the cross section thus obtained was 8.1(4)$\times 10^{-18}$ m$^{2}$. The measured collision cross section has been utilized for the determination of C$_{6}$ coefficient of the ground state (${^1S}_0$) of $^{88}$Sr atom, which can be useful to estimate the relative frequency shift in the clock transition. We also estimate the loss rate induced by the combined effect of the decay of atoms in the long-lived ${^3P}_0$ state and temperature-induced atomic losses from the capture volume of the MOT. We find that the contribution due to the latter is dominant in comparison to the other atomic loss channels and must be included in the studies that rely on the total loss rate measurement., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures
