The Atlantic bonito (Sarda, family Scombridae) is a pelagic species and one of the most exploited small tuna species. Despite its economic importance, biological information is scarce with no associated management directives. In this study, using a population genomic approach resulted in a lack of panmixia of two genetic pools with different effective population sizes (east central-tropical Atlantic and northeast Atlantic-Mediterranean) and an intermixing zone in Atlantic Morocco. The absence of genetic heterogeneity between the locations in Atlantic - Mediterranean transitional zone adds new evidence that challenges the Strait of Gibraltar as a phylogeographic barrier for marine pelagic species. These results are proposed to the ICCAT Commission to establish management areas for this species, although they are not consistent with the recently adopted pelagic ecoregions. Finally, a panel of highly informative SNPs was developed for efficient and low-cost population assignment and the analysis of unresolved population structures.

The shape of sagitta otoliths was used to compare individuals of little tunny (Euthynnus alleteratus) harvested on board commercial fishing vessels from the coastal areas along the Eastern Atlantic, including the Mediterranean Sea. Fish sampling and selection was designed to cover possible seasonal changes and tuna size. The research encompassed both morphometric and shape analyses of left sagittal otoliths extracted of 504 fish specimens. Four shape indices (Circularity, Roundness, Rectangularity, and Form-Factor) were significantly different between two groups, showing a statistical differentiation between two clear spatial units. The degree of divergence was even more pronounced along the rostrum, postrostrum, and excisura of the generated otolith outlines between these two groups. One group corresponds to the samples from the coastal areas in the Northeast Temperate Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea (NETAM Area) and a second group from the coastal areas off the Eastern Tropical Atlantic coast of Africa (ETA Area). This study is the first to use otolith shape to differentiate tunas from separate spatial units. These results could be used to re-classify previously collected samples and to correct time series of data collected.

A classic issue in ecology is to understand how similar species coexist in a given area (i.e., sympatry). The situation of dolphins in the Western Mediterranean Sea may represent a special case of sympatry in that three similar species (the short-beaked common dolphin [Delphinus delphis], the striped dolphin [Stenella coeruleoalba], and the bottlenose dolphin [Tursiops truncatus) are under strong human impacts in the same area. From the viewpoint of ecology and conservation biology, it is challenging to determine how these three dolphin species live together and avoid competitive exclusion in the setting of such impacts. The Spanish Institute of Oceanography has a dataset of dolphin species opportunistic sightings. Using these data, we constructed three binary variables, comprising the sighting of one species versus the sighting of either of the other two species. We obtained three significant probability models after performing logistic regression of these binary variables on a set of spatio-temporal explanatory variables. We analysed these models from the perspective of fuzzy set theory by applying the favourability function to the probability models, fuzzy operations overlap, and entropy. The results show that common dolphins are differentially favoured in the eastern part of the study area and far away from main shipping routes. The striped dolphin was differentially favoured in the western part of the study area, above deep waters, near main shipping routes, and in summer and spring. Finally, bottlenose dolphins were differentially favoured in the mid-western part of the study area, in winter, and over shallow waters.

Although most research focused on the northern Gulf of Mexico for western Atlantic bluefin tuna, the histological records of reproductive activity of this species in the southern Gulf of Mexico (Mexican waters) have been presented for the first time. This work is the first to study oocyte dynamics in Atlantic bluefin tuna caught in the southern Gulf of Mexico by assessing and comparing them with Mediterranean stock (BFT-E) through stereology using two different methods. Regardless of Atlantic bluefin tuna females returning to their respective spawning grounds at different months in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean, both stocks arrived reproductively inactive and remained in these zones during periods of similar length; they were reproductively active until March for the southern Gulf of Mexico and May for the Mediterranean females. The comparison of the size structure between the two stocks examined using kernel density estimators demonstrated a quite remarkable difference in mean fork lengths between stocks. The ovarian oocyte density, that is, the number of oocytes per gram of ovary, for each gonad stage predicted using the Weibel and Gomez and oocyte packing density (OPD) methods did not significantly differ between stocks and showed that advanced vitellogenic oocytes from spawning-capable females are an appropriate indicator to estimate potential fecundity, presenting values of c. 1273 and ~1355 eggs per gram for the southern Gulf of Mexico and Mediterranean females, respectively. Females caught in Mexican waters (southern Gulf of Mexico) were larger than those caught in the Mediterranean; however, it was demonstrated that the length and weight of females did not affect ovarian oocyte density production. In addition, densities estimated for each gonad stage using W&G and OPD methods did not differ between stocks and presented equal patterns in their oocyte dynamics. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the reproductive biology

Here we report findings regarding the reproductive biology of swordfish Xiphias gladius in Corsican waters in the north-western Mediterranean Sea. We sampled 558 swordfish (72–216 cm; lower jaw to fork length, LJFL) caught from June to September in 2019 and 2020 off Corsica's western and eastern coasts. We assessed swordfish reproductive activity using macroscopic gonad characteristics, trends of gonadal indexes for both sexes, and histological investigation of oocyte developmental stages. Size at first maturity (L50) was estimated at 139.2 ± 2.7 (95% CI) cm LJFL for females using histological techniques and 117 ± 1.7 cm (LJFL) for males using macroscopic criteria, corresponding to 3–4 and 2–3 year old-fish, respectively. Spawning occurred mainly from June to July, with a peak in July, characterized by a high gonadal index and histological and macroscopic evidence of reproductive activity. X. gladius spawning period is of relatively short duration, closely linked to SST, during which the females lay successive batches of eggs at a non-evaluated frequency. Batch fecundity (BF) and relative fecundity (RF) were estimated from five gravid females (135–209 cm LJFL) with unovulated, hydrated oocytes. BF was exponentially related to fish length with a mean BF of 1.94 ± 1.33 (mean ± SD) million hydrated oocytes in females. RF ranged from 22.29 to 37.24 (29.05 ± 5.97; mean ± SD) hydrated oocytes per gram of body weight. Our results improve knowledge regarding the sexual maturity, reproductive period, and spawning areas of swordfish in Corsican waters. These data are essential for the spatiotemporal management of Mediterranean swordfish stocks. We also provide an overview of the available information related to the reproductive biology and dynamics of Mediterranean swordfish and demonstrate the ubiquitous presence of swordfish spawning grounds throughout the Mediterranean Sea.

Two distinct contingents of Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT), migrants and residents, occur in the Strait of Gibraltar (SoG). Long-term residents are commercially exploited all year round using hook and line gears, whereas migrants are caught by traps in springtime as they pass through the SoG towards Mediterranean spawning grounds. While reproductive features of migrants have been widely studied, the life history of residents remains poorly investigated. The relative contribution of this subpopulation to ABFT eastern stock productivity is therefore un - known. Reproductive traits of resident ABFT were monitored throughout the year, and were com pared with those of migrants crossing the SoG in spring. To assess maturation timing, gonads were classified into maturation stages based on histological features. Our results indicate bio - metric and reproductive differences between SoG residents and migrants. ABFT caught by hook and line gears were smaller on average than those collected from traps. The females sampled from the hook and line fishery in May and early June showed, on average, significantly lower GSI val ues than those caught by trap. In contrast, the GSI values of males sampled in May were not sig nificantly different between gears. Histological analyses showed a more advanced reproductive condition in trap-caught migrants. Delayed maturation schedules of residents in comparison to migrants would result in less egg production and poorer larval survival rates. The present findings encourage further investigation of reproductive schedules in unstudied subpopulations for a better understanding of ABFT dynamics.

Deep-habitat cetaceans are generally difficult to study, leading to a limited knowledge of their population. This paper assesses the differential distribution patterns of three deep-habitat cetaceans (Sperm whale—Physeter macrocephalus, Risso’s dolphin—Grampus griseus & Cuvier’s beaked whale—Ziphius cavirostris). We used data of 842 opportunistic sightings of cetaceans in the western Mediterranean sea. We inferred environmental and spatio-temporal factors that affect their distribution. Binary logistic regression models were generated to compare the presence of deep-habitat cetaceans with the presence of other cetacean species in the dataset. Then, the favourability function was applied, allowing for comparison between all the models. Sperm whale and Risso’s dolphin presence was differentially favoured by the distance to towns in the eastern part of the western Mediterranean sea. The differential distribution of sperm whale was also influenced by the stability of SST, and that of the Risso’s dolphin by lower mean salinity and higher mean Chlorophyll A concentration. When modelling the three deep-habitat cetaceans (including Cuvier’s beaked whale), the variable distance to towns had a negative influence on the presence of any of them more than it did to other cetaceans, being more favourable far from towns, so this issue should be further investigated.

Background: The bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) is an epipelagic fish with a worldwide distribution that is highly targeted by fisheries. Genetic diversity and population genetics are good indicators of population structure and thus, essential tools for fisheries management. Knowing which factors (biotic and abiotic) might be shaping such structure is crucial for management plans. In the present study, we assessed the population structure of the bullet tuna in the western and central Mediterranean Sea. Methods: We used two types of genetic data: the mitochondrial DNA control region and seven microsatellite loci. The analysis of 431 sequences with a length of 386 bp from the mtDNA CR and the results from 276 individuals were genotyped by seven microsatellite loci. Results: Both types of markers coincided in showing significant genetic differences between an Iberian Peninsula–Strait of Gibraltar stock in comparison with a North African stock. Conclusions: We argue that this differentiation pattern is likely caused by reproductive strategies such as coastal spawning, larval retention, and natal homing behavior. These results should endorse the implementation of management plans for a resource that currently is not being managed. Thus, to ensure sustainability, these new policies should consider the presence of at least two genetically identified stocks.

Effective fisheries management requires accurate stock identification, which can be challenging in mixed stock fisheries such as the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). This species is currently managed considering two stocks known to spawn in the Mediterranean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, respectively. However, recent studies have shown that individuals from both spawning components can interbreed at a recently discovered spawning ground, located in the Slope Sea. A better understanding of the mixing patterns, as well as the proportion in which both stocks interbreed in the Slope Sea are valuable for a reliable Atlantic bluefin tuna stock assessment. With this aim, we assigned genetic origin of 2000 individuals captured at feeding aggregates across the North Atlantic using a 96 SNP panel and analyzed the genetic profile of 500 individuals including 200 potential Slope Sea spawners (i.e., spawning capable individuals captured in this area at the spawning season), using a 8000 SNP array. We confirmed that stock mixing occurs across different feeding aggregates in the North Atlantic, being stronger in the Northwest Atlantic, where the Mediterranean component was a majority at some locations within and near the Slope Sea spawning ground. The analysis of Slope Sea spawner candidate individuals showed nearly equal representation from both Mediterranean and Gulf of Mexico genetic origin individuals, suggesting similar contribution to the Slope Sea origin offspring. Our findings constitute an important progress towards the understanding of the Atlantic bluefin tuna stock mixing dynamics and the relevance of the recently discovered Slope Sea spawning ground for the conservation of the species.

The ICCAT North Atlantic Albacore (Thunnus alalunga) Research Program was established to enhance knowledge on albacore to provide more accurate scientific advice to the Commission. Funds are provided to the Albacore WG to develop research activities to accomplish several objectives. One of the research objectives is to increase knowledge on reproductive biology for the northern Atlantic stock, maturity schedules (L50) and egg production (size/age related fecundity. In March 2021, Terms of Reference were published by ICCAT. A Consortium integrated by Canada, Venezuela, Chinese-Taipei and Spain presented an offer to collect gonad samples and spines throughout the year and carry out the study of reproductive biology for North Atlantic albacore stock. Results of histological analysis: maturity stages, batch fecundity and seasonal area of spawners are presented as well as the age determined of partially collection of albacore spines. Analysis were done with the total albacore gonads samples collected in 2020 and 2021 for the reproductive biology study of northern albacore.

This paper provides an update of the study on habitat use for swordfish, developed within the working plan of the Swordfish Species Group of ICCAT. A total of 26 miniPAT tags have been deployed so far in the North (n=13) and South Atlantic (n=9) and the Mediterranean (n=4). Data from eight tags was analysed for horizontal and vertical habitat use. These preliminary results showed swordfish moved in several directions, travelling considerable distances in both the North and South stocks. Swordfish spent most of the daytime in deeper waters with a mean of 540.8 m, being closer to the surface during nighttime (mean=78.3 m). The deepest dive recorded was of 1480 m. Regarding temperature, swordfish inhabited waters with temperatures ranging from 3.9ºC to 30.5ºC with a mean of 11.3ºC during daytime and 21.7ºC during nighttime. The main plan for the next phase of the project is to continue the tag deployment during 2022 in several regions of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Currently 11 tags are with the participating CPCs and nine tags are still to be attributed.

[EN] Skipjack is an important commercial species with a tropical distribution, although captures in the Mediterranean Sea have been recorded for decades. The western Mediterranean Sea, specifically the Balearic Sea, is a spawning area for several tuna species. We hypothesized that the western Mediterranean warming in the last few decades could lead to the expansion of skipjack tuna spawning areas from tropical areas to the Mediterranean Sea. We analysed 454 individuals (41.8-81 cm straight fork length) caught by sport fishing vessels in offshore trolling championships in Spanish Mediterranean waters during summer months from 2014 to 2019. Analysis of the gonadosomatic index and microscopic examination of the ovaries (n=192) showed that the skipjack is reproductively active in the western Mediterranean, particularly in the Balearic Sea. These results indicate that the skipjack has expanded its distribution and spawning area from tropical waters to the Mediterranean, probably owing to the gradual warming detected in the area in the last few decades. This new spawning activity in the area should be monitored in the near future to study the possible impact on other tuna species that share the distribution range and spawning area with skipjack tuna in the western Mediterranean., [ES] El listado (Katsuwonus pelamis) es una especie muy importante a nivel comercial. Aunque su distribución es tropical, desde hace décadas se registran capturas en el Mediterráneo. El Mediterráneo occidental, concretamente el mar Balear, es zona de puesta de varias especies de túnidos. Este trabajo planteó la hipótesis de que el calentamiento registrado en las últimas décadas en el Mediterráneo occidental podría producir la expansión de las áreas de puesta del Listado desde las zonas tropicales hasta el mar Mediterráneo. Analizamos 454 ejemplares (41,8-81 cm SFL) capturados por embarcaciones de pesca recreativa en campeonatos de curricán de altura durante los meses de verano de 2014 a 2019 en aguas del Mediterráneo español. El análisis del Índice Gonadosomático y el análisis microscópico de los ovarios (n=192) mostraron que la especie es reproductivamente activa en el Mediterráneo occidental, particularmente en el mar Balear. Estos resultados indican que el Listado ha ampliado su área de distribución y puesta desde aguas tropicales hasta el Mediterráneo, probablemente debido al calentamiento gradual detectado en la zona en las últimas décadas. Además, es de interés realizar un seguimiento de esta nueva actividad de puesta en un futuro próximo para estudiar el posible impacto sobre otras especies de túnidos con las que comparte tanto área de distribución como zona de puesta en el Mediterráneo occidental.

Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus, Lowe, 1839) is one of the eight recognized species of the genus Thunnus. It is considered a tropical species distributed in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. To date, no validated presence of this species has been reported inside the Mediterranean Sea. This study, however, confirms, for the first time, the presence of three young individuals of this species within the Mediterranean Sea.

Marine megafauna typically include large pelagic sharks, sea turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals. These megafauna are mainly associated with pelagic ecosystems through which they undertake long-distance migration. The Alboran Sea connects the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea and is thus a relevant hotspot for marine megafauna. In this area, the overlap between various human activities—such as marine traffic or fisheries on the north and south coasts—and pollution entails the capture or mortality of marine megafauna. We review the main research and findings on marine megafauna in the Alboran Sea and discuss research approaches that could provide suggestions for the effective management of large marine ecosystems.

Larval abundance indices express retrocalculated abundances of larval densities at hatching time. They provide a proxy for assessing spawning stock biomass and are applied to assess population status of various species in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Balearic Sea. Recently, the methodological approach to calculate the indices was improved to accommodate for non-linear responses of environmental effects on catchability. This improved methodology is routinely applied in the Balearic Sea to assess the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) spawning stock biomass. Here we apply the same methodology to update the larval index of albacore (Thunnus alalunga) from surveys conducted from 2001 to 2019 in the Balearic Sea, the most relevant spawning ground of this species in the Western Mediterranean. Albacore larval abundances show a decreasing trend and significant lower abundances from 2013 onwards, despite a slight recovery between 2016 and 2017. This larval index, standardized for gears, sampling coverage, salinity, date and sea surface temperature, provides information on the dynamics of the western Mediterranean stock of albacore, which is considered a data poor stock.

Standardized relative abundance indices of albacore (Thunnus alalunga Bonnaterre, 1788) caught by the Spanish surface longline (LLALB) in the western Mediterranean Sea were estimated for the period 2009-2019. Yearly standardized CPUE were estimated through Generalized Linear Mixed Effects Models (GLMM) under a negative binomial error distribution assumption. The main factors in the standardization analysis were year and season (quarter). The index shows an increasing trend from the beginning of the series (2009) to a maximum in 2011; following a decrease up to 2013, and a relatively stable trend fluctuating around a level three and a half times lower compared to the maximum abundance for the period 2013-2019.

This report details the third phase of biological sampling and associated analysis undertaken as part of an international swordfish biology program. The program was established in 2018 and sampling was conducted for swordfish in the North and South Atlantic and Mediterranean. Fish were sampled for size, sex, and maturity. Anal fin spines, otoliths, gonads, and tissues were obtained for ageing, growth, maturity and genetic analyses. These data will be used to inform ICCAT assessment and the ongoing management strategy evaluation process. In this report we examine sampling representativeness relative to spatial and temporal patterns in recent catch data. Samples were obtained from a broad temporal and spatial range, however, some improvements are required in spatial-temporal coverage.

Accordingly, ICCAT reserves the right to comment, object and endorse this Report, until it is finally adopted by the Commission.”

Accurately characterizing the biology of a pelagic shark species is critical when assessing its status and resilience to fishing pressure. Natural mortality (M) is well known to be a key parameter determining productivity and resilience, but also one for which estimates are most uncertain. While M can be inferred from life history, validated direct estimates are extremely rare for sharks. Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) are presently overfished in the North Atlantic, but there are no directed fisheries and successful live release of bycatch is believed to have increased. Understanding M, post-release mortality (PRM), and variables that affect mortality are necessary for management and effective bycatch mitigation. From 177 deployments of archival satellite tags, we inferred mortality events, characterized physiological recovery periods following release, and applied survival mixture models to assess M and PRM. We also evaluated covariate effects on the duration of any recovery period and PRM to inform mitigation. Although large sample sizes involving extended monitoring periods (>90 days) would be optimal to directly estimate M from survival data, it was possible to constrain estimates and infer probable values for both species. Furthermore, the consistency of M estimates with values derived from longevity information suggests that age determination is relatively accurate for these species. Regarding bycatch mitigation, our analyses suggest that juvenile porbeagle are more susceptible to harm during capture and handling, that keeping lamnid sharks in the water during release is optimal, and that circle hooks are associated with longer recovery periods for shortfin mako.

This document is the final report of the third year of the short-term contract of the Small Tuna Year Program by ICCAT, with the objectives of: a) conduct additional sampling aiming to fill the specific gaps of the biological samples for estimating the growth and maturity parameters for BON and LTA; b) estimate the referred parameters for both species, and preliminary provide preliminary results for WAH; and, c) refine the sampling and stock structure analysis for BON, LTA and WAH. A total of 374 individuals were collected: 145 of BON, 139 of LTA and 90 WAH. Initial target size class was accomplished only for BON in the Mediterranean. Small individuals are need in the Northeast and no samples were obtained in Southeast Atlantic. For LTA, total target sizes were not completely achieved in any case. However, preliminary results were obtained for growth and reproductive parameters. For BON, with samples arrived from Morocco, no genetic differentiation was detected, and the hypothesis provided in the previous contract is maintained. The population genetic analysis of WAH presents a scenario of homogeneous distribution.

There is a vivid debate about the border location between North and South Atlantic swordfish stocks. Climate oscillations, East Atlantic (EA) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), have a major impact on the Northern Hemisphere climate and weather conditions. The initial hypothesis of present study was that if it is considering the southern frontier, each stock will be differentially affected by both climatic oscillations, which would imply the existence of a strong border. However, a similar effect on both sides of the border would result in a permeable barrier. The results suggest that the combined effects of EA and NAO affect both the North and the South Atlantic swordfish stocks in similar ways, and consequently, the location of the border may reside farther north than the current management boundary at 5°N.

Pelagic sharks are an important bycatch in pelagic fisheries, especially for drifting longlines targeting swordfish. In the Cabo Verde Archipelago (tropical NE Atlantic), pelagic shark catches can reach a significant proportion of the total catches. Due to the increased concern on the status of pelagic shark species, this study was developed to enhance the current knowledge of those sharks in the Cabo Verde region in comparison to the adjacent areas, especially associated with European Union (EU) pelagic longline fishing activity. Stock status indicators for the two main species, blue shark (Prionace glauca) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus), were developed, based on fisheries data from logbooks and onboard scientific observers, including analysis of size frequency distributions and standardized catch-per-unit-of-effort (CPUE) indexes over time. The standardized CPUEs have been stable or increasing for both species in the past 10 years, indicating no signs of local depletion. In terms of sizes, the blue shark catch is composed mainly of adults, which can be a sign of a stable population. On the contrary, the catch of shortfin mako is composed mainly of juveniles, which in conjunction of a decrease of mean size might be a cause of concern, highlighting possible overfishing on the species in the region. Thirty satellite tags, 25 archival miniPATs and 5 SPOT GPS, were deployed in the Cabo Verde Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), showing that those species are highly mobile. The biomass and size distributions were modeled with spatial and seasonal models (GAMs) identifying locations where juveniles are predominantly concentrated and that should be prioritized for conservation. This work presents new information on the status of pelagic sharks in the Cabo Verde region in the context of those highly migratory species, and can now be used to promote more sustainable fisheries in the region.

Dolphinfish is targeted by small-scale fisheries and is part of the bycatch of drifting surface longline targeting tuna and swordfish in the Mediterranean Sea. The main aim of the present study is to understand the effect of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the dolphinfish bycatch of the Spanish longline fisheries in the Western Mediterranean Sea and, likewise on the catch of small-scale fisheries targeting dolphinfish associated to anchored fish aggregating devices (aFADs) in waters of the Balearic Islands. Understanding the impact of climatic effects is crucial to improve the assessment and management of the Mediterranean dolphinfish. In longline fisheries, the negative phases of the NAO with a short time lag increase the dolphinfish bycatch probability, with a CPUE higher than the mean of the study period. However, with a long time lag, the positive phases increase the dolphinfish bycatch probability, with a CPUE higher than the mean of the study period. On the other hand, when examining the Mallorca aFADs fisheries, the negative phases of the NAO with a long time lag increased the probability of catching fish with higher landings than the observed mean of the study period. The results suggest strong connections between the prevailing climate conditions in March and April and dolphinfish catches during the fishing season of this species in September and October

Climate oscillations affect fish population dynamics, ecological processes and fisheries activities in marine ecosystems. In the western Mediterranean, several atmospheric indices associated with pressure oscillations have been identified as the main drivers of the abundance or availability of certain resources exploited by fisheries. The main aim of this study was to explore the association between the potential effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) on the first sale price of fresh fish at the fish market of the most representative commercial species of the fisheries in the Alboran Sea (Mediterranean Sea). We used the Pearson correlation test to investigate correlations between the atmospheric oscillation indices and the fish market price of the selected species. The results suggest that inter- and intra-annual atmospheric oscillations may have an effect on bonito (Sarda sarda), European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and catsharks (Scyliorhinus spp.) abundance and catchability in the Alboran Sea and, therefore, an impact on their fish market presence and price variability according to the law of supply and demand

Plastic debris is found in nearly all marine regions and is a known threat to marine biota. This study evaluates the ingestion of plastic marine debris (macro and micro plastics) by a piscivorous predator, Alepisaurus ferox Lowe (1833). A total of 27 specimens were captured in 2015 and 2016 in the North Atlantic (around 34 degrees-36 degrees N and 10 degrees-16 degrees W) and their stomachs were dissected and inspected for plastic elements. Macroplastic particles were found in 37% of fish, with an average weight of 0.46 +/- 1.14 g with film being the most abundant category (60%). The main polymers characterized were Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE). Microplastics were found in 74% of the stomachs, with item values per individual ranging from 0 to 16, with an average value of 4.7 +/- 4.8 items per stomach. Only microfibers and fragments were observed, with microfibers (similar to 85 %) being the dominant type

In response to a request from the Spanish Ministry of Farming, Fishing, Food, and Environment (Spanish: Agricultura, Pesca, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente) in 2015, a fish expert group was formed to provide a reference list of marine fish species according to five regions (marine demarcations) established by Spanish Law 41/2010 on the protection of the marine environment. The objective of this article was to update and analyse the data compiled in the marine fish species checklist in order to: 1) provide a complete list of marine fish species in the Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone; 2) compare this checklist between bio-geographical areas; and 3) identify possible priority hotspots for their conservation. We applied several indices, such as the total number of species in each area, species richness, and the Biodiversity Conservation Concern index. We discuss gaps in knowledge and the lessons learned for conservation purposes. A total of 1075 marine fishes were reported in Spanish waters. Most of these fish were well determined, whereas a few were treated as uncertain. The marine demarcation with the most species is the Canary Islands with 795 species, followed by the Spanish north coast demarcation with 506 species. However, the marine demarcations with the most species per area are the Spanish coast of the Gulf of Cádiz and the Strait of Gibraltar-Alboran Sea.

The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) is a cosmopolitan species with a resident population in the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its habitat, open seas often far from ports and airfields, and its long-distance migratory behaviour, studying and monitoring its distribution is costly. Currently, many opportunistic sightings (OS) reports are available, which provide a source of potentially useful, low-cost information about the spatio-temporal distribution of this species. Since 1993, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography has compiled a dataset comprising 874 records of OS of nine species of cetaceans in the western Mediterranean Sea and adjacent waters. The aim of this study was to use this dataset to investigate the differential use of these waters by the fin whale when compared with other cetaceans. We compared the presence of fin whales with the presence of any other cetacean species in the dataset. Binary logistic regression was then used to model these occurrences according to several spatio-temporal variables expected to reflect their habitat use. Several significant models reveal that fin whales are more prone than other cetaceans to use the waters over the slope of the Gulf of Lion in summer. This finding confirms that the Gulf of Lion is an area of importance for this species and suggests that the slope of the continental shelf could be particularly important. Our study shows how OS can be a source of useful information when appropriately analyzed.

The Alboran Sea holds one of the highest biological productivity rates in the Mediterranean, and thus represents an important nursing area for pelagic fishes including tunas. Trophic interactions between sympatric populations of age-0 bluefin tuna (ABFT) and Atlantic bonito (BON) were investigated in Alboran by integrating stomach content analysis (SCA) and stable isotope analysis of bulk muscle (BSIA) and individual amino acids (AA-CSIA). BON and ABFT individuals were collected in the Bay of Malaga; additionally, ABFT were caught off Carboneras. SCA showed that BON fed only on teleost fishes, whereas ABFT diet also comprised invertebrates. We found significant dietary differences between groups using SCA and BSIA data. Low values of niche width estimated from SCA and BSIA indicate poor dietary diversity in the two sampling sites. There was no isotopic niche overlap between groups, which may indicate resource partitioning. Trophic positions (TP) estimated from SCA, BSIA and AA-CSIA place BON at higher TP than ABFT.

Several studies have confirmed that the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) has a direct effect on tuna across a range of biological aspects, such as abundance, catchability, recruitment, and physical condition (LC), especially during winter season (NAOw). However, its effect on reproductive biology has been barely investigated. Thus, the main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the NAO on the physical condition index and gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the three most commercially exploited small species of migrating tuna (i.e. little tunny, bullet tuna, and Atlantic bonito) in the Mediterranean Sea. A positive direct correlation was found between little tunny and Atlantic bonito and the gonadosomatic and the physical condition indexes. In addition, a strong correlation was found between the NAOw and the gonadosomatic and LC indexes, which could lead to higher reproductive investment in gonad growth before the spawning season. In contrast, bullet tuna had a low LC index during peak gonad growth and were less affected by NAOw oscillations. In the case of bullet tuna, these results could be explained by a longer reproductive period that would lead to faster fat consumption before the reproductive period than in the other species considered and greater dependence on the surrounding environmental conditions for reproductive success.

The number of studies of reproductive biology for Atlantic bluefin tuna carried out in the Gulf of Mexico is significantly lower than those undertaken in the Mediterranean Sea. Four spawning areas have been found for the eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna stock in the Mediterranean Sea, so it is not implausible that there is more than one spawning area in the Gulf of Mexico for the western Atlantic bluefin tuna stock. The individuals used in this study were caught as bycatch by the Mexican surface longline fleet between January and April 2015. A total of 63 individuals ranging between 192 and 293 cm LF (mean = 238 ± 22.52 cm) were measured. Gonads from 46 fish (31 females and 15 males) were collected for histological examination. All the individuals were classified as mature; 25 were reproductively active (in spawning capable and spawning stages). The histological analysis indicates spawning activity in Mexican waters (the southern Gulf of Mexico). Spawning occurred in March and April, when the sea surface temperature was 25.57 °C ± 0.69 in March and 27.03 °C ± 0.69 in April. Information on the location of the spawning areas is necessary for a correct management of species. The present study provides the first histological evidence of reproductive activity in Mexican waters, and indicates a wider spawning area, beyond just the northern zone, potentially encompassing the entire Gulf of Mexico

The Western Mediterranean Sea connects the Atlantic Ocean with the rest of the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar. The Western Mediterranean Sea is important area for cetaceans and it contains highly productive feeding areas, such as the Pelagos Sanctuary and the South Balearic eddy. The main aim of this study was to assess the suitability of a group of Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) for the conservation of cetaceans inhabiting this area. There were 398 (46.44%) opportunistic sightings (OS) within a number of IMMAs and 459 (53.56%) sightings outside of IMMAs in this area. Trend surface analysis was used to select the OSs (GPOSs hereafter) most likely to be observed within IMMAs as a function of their geographical position. Significant differences were found between the observed GPOS rate and the expected GPOS rate weighted by the surface area of each IMMA. Specifically, there were more sightings than expected in the Alboran Sea IMMA than in the North West Mediterranean Sea, Slope, and Canyon System IMMA. In the latter area, there were fewer sightings than expected

We propose four different environmental indicators, three related to temperature variability in three major spawning grounds of tuna species in the Mediterranean, and one related to the sea surface salinity variability in the Balearic Sea. These oceanographic indicators show the annual variability of environmental parameters affecting growth and survival of tuna eggs and larval. The indicators are intended to provide quick access to assessment working groups and fisheries scientist to identify potentially anomalous years

Maturity ogives are usually estimated using different methods, including macroscopical and microscopical maturity data. Differences in maturity ogives estimations are found for species and by area/stock. So those differences may be a consequence of the use of different methodological techniques (criteria) or due to different spawning tactics. Taking this into account is essential to guarantee that the maturity criteria for each species are consistent across the laboratories and countries involved in stock assessment. The objective of this document is to show a large amount of detailed photos (macro and microphotographs) of the different gonad stages of Auxis rochei, Sarda sarda and Euthynnus alletteratus, for females and males, which will be an enhancement to the descriptions of maturity stages given in the maturity tables.
