1. A classification of the natural and social distributions Part 2: the explanations

Abstract

In this second part of our survey on the social and natural distributions, we investigate some models, which intend to explain the statistical regularity of the natural and social distributions. There is a large variety of models and in their majority, they look for a power law, at least in the tail, although there are several real distributions which are not described by a power law. Among the power law models, we discuss a) the two basic models and their variants: the random multiplicative model and the preferential attachment model; b) models based on the BoseEinstein statistics; c) geographical, economical, and criticality models. We present also some models, which do not intend to explain a power law, and among them lognormal-like distributions, exponential and stretched exponential distributions. The interesting findings of this survey are that there are few models giving a power law for the complete distribution and that among them, the Zipf exponent 1 is rare.

Abstract

This paper presents an extensive survey of regular distributions in natural and social sciences. The survey includes studies from a wide scope of academic disciplines, in order to create an inventory of the different mathematical functions used to describe the distributions. The goal of the study was to determine, whether a unique function can be used to describe all the distributions (universality) or a particular function is best suited to describe the distributions in each specific field of research (domain universality). We propose a classification of distributions into eighth different categories, based on three representations: the Zipf representation, the cumulative density function (CDF) and the probability density function (PDF). In the 89 cases included in the survey, neither universality nor domain universality was found. In particular, based on the results of the survey, the claim that "power law provides a good description for majority of distributions" may be rejected. Only one third of the distributions in our survey are associated with power laws, while another third is well described by lognormal and similar functions (Dagum, Weibull, loglogistic and Gamma functions). We suggest that correct characterization of a distribution relies on two conditions. First, it is important to include the full range of the available data to avoid distortion due to arbitrary cut off values. Second, it is advisable to display the data in all three representations: the Zipf representation, the CDF and the PDF.

Abstract

Recently a big interest arises to the automated diagnosis and digitalization of clinical data. The purpose of this article is to present treatment algorithm and software system for Problematic Skin Wounds (PSW) by using Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), based on the first study on platelet-rich plasma application carried out in Bulgaria. PSW-PRP-Project software system was developed for entering and processing medical data during PRP treatment, visualization of general patient information, treatment trend, as well as a module for training specialists through the created database. For a period of seven years around 100 patients have been treatment at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, UMBAL KANEV Ruse AD, by applying platelet-rich plasma. The algorithm for the use of platelet-rich plasma for treating problematic skin wounds allows for the proper and accurate treatment of patients with various problematic skin wounds with the purpose of solving the therapeutic problem and their complete recovery. The procedure’s course is determined based on assessment on three digital criteria TWS, TAS and TSWD. The algorithms are based on our results, obtained for the first in Bulgaria while treating problematic skin wounds by using platelet-rich plasma and successfully treating 92.78% of patients to full recovery.

8. A geometrical approach to non-adiabatic transitions in quantum theory: applications to NMR, over-barrier reflection and parametric excitation of quantum oscillator

Abstract

This article deals with non-adiabatic processes (i.e. processes excluded by the adiabatic theorem) from the geometrical (group-theoretical) point of view. An approximated formula for the probabilities of the non-adiabatic transitions is derived in the adiabatic regime for the case when the parameter-dependent Hamiltonian represents a smooth curve in the Lie algebra and the quantal dynamics is determined by the corresponding Lie group evolution operator. We treat the spin precession in a time-dependent magnetic field and the over-barrier reflection problem in a uniform way using the first-order dynamical equations on SU(2) and $SU(1.1)$ group manifolds correspondingly. 10. Exact Evolution Operator on Non-compact Group Manifolds

Abstract

Free quantal motion on group manifolds is considered. The Hamiltonian is given by the Laplace -- Beltrami operator on the group manifold, and the purpose is to get the (Feynman's) evolution kernel. The spectral expansion, which produced a series of the representation characters for the evolution kernel in the compact case, does not exist for non-compact group, where the spectrum is not bounded. In this work real analytical groups are investigated, some of which are of interest for physics. An integral representation for the evolution operator is obtained in terms of the Green function, i.e. the solution to the Helmholz equation on the group manifold. The alternative series expressions for the evolution operator are reconstructed from the same integral representation, the spectral expansion (when exists) and the sum over classical paths. For non-compact groups, the latter can be interpreted as the (exact) semi-classical approximation, like in the compact case. 11. On the concept of the tunneling time

Abstract

Asymptotic time evolution of a wave packet describing a non-relativistic particle incident on a potential barrier is considered, using the Wigner phase-space distribution. The distortion of the trasmitted wave packet is determined by two time-like parameters, given by the energy derivative of the complex transmission amplitude. The result is consistent with various definitions of the tunneling time (e.g. the B\"{u}ttiker-Landauer time, the complex time and Wigner's phase time). Abstract

Time dependence for barrier penetration is considered in the phase space. An asymptotic phase-space propagator for nonrelativistic scattering on a one - dimensional barrier is constructed. The propagator has a form universal for various initial state preparations and local potential barriers. It is manifestly causal and includes time-lag effects and quantum spreading. Specific features of quantum dynamics which disappear in the standard semi-classical approximation are revealed. Abstract

One-dimensional quantum scattering from a local potential barrier is considered. Analytical properties of the scattering amplitudes have been investigated by means of the integral equations equivalent to the Schrodinger equations. The transition and reflection amplitudes are expressed in terms of two complex functions of the incident energy, which are similar to the Jost function in the partial-wave scattering. These functions are entire for finite-range potentials and meromorphic for exponentially decreasing potentials. Abstract

In 1974, Berezin proposed a quantum theory for dynamical systems having a K\"{a}hler manifold as their phase space. The system states were represented by holomorphic functions on the manifold. For any homogeneous K\"{a}hler manifold, the Lie algebra of its group of motions may be represented either by holomorphic differential operators (``quantum theory"), or by functions on the manifold with Poisson brackets, generated by the K\"{a}hler structure (``classical theory"). The K\"{a}hler potentials and the corresponding Lie algebras are constructed now explicitly for all unitary representations of any compact simple Lie group. 15. Realization of compact Lie algebras in K\'ahler manifolds

Abstract

The Berezin quantization on a simply connected homogeneous K\"{a}hler manifold, which is considered as a phase space for a dynamical system, enables a description of the quantal system in a (finite-dimensional) Hilbert space of holomorphic functions corresponding to generalized coherent states. The Lie algebra associated with the manifold symmetry group is given in terms of first-order differential operators. In the classical theory, the Lie algebra is represented by the momentum maps which are functions on the manifold, and the Lie product is the Poisson bracket given by the K\"{a}hler structure. The K\"{a}hler potentials are constructed for the manifolds related to all compact semi-simple Lie groups. The complex coordinates are introduced by means of the Borel method. The K\"{a}hler structure is obtained explicitly for any unitary group representation. The cocycle functions for the Lie algebra and the Killing vector fields on the manifold are also obtained.

Abstract

The results of the first comprehensive radar survey of the spring and autumn bird migration in Bulgaria in a key area of the migratory flyway Via Pontica are presented. The weather radar of Bulgarian Air Traffic Ser- vices Authority (BULATSA) located nearby the town of Aksakovo (Varna Region, North-Eastern Bulgaria) was used. The survey covered 1101 days and nights of four years (2014–2017). It was found that during the autumn migration the average Migration Traffic Rate (MTR) was 2.5 times higher than during the spring migration, and the intensity of nocturnal migration was on average 14 times higher than the diurnal one. The autumn nocturnal migration was the most intense, with an average of 17 times more birds than those during the day time in the same period. By contrast, in spring the nocturnal migration was only 11 times higher than the diurnal migration. Seventy four percent of birds were found in the height range of up to 900 m a.g.l. The evaluation of the quantitative characteristics of bird migration in North-Eastern Bulgaria presented in this study could serve as the basis for future monitoring of the important bird migration characteristics in a long- term period when the data of weather radar network will be available for larger territories in Europe.

Abstract

West Nile virus (WNV) is a zoonotic flavivirus whose transmission cycle in nature includes wild birds as amplifying hosts and ornithophilic mosquito vectors. Bridge vectors can transmit WNV to mammal species potentially causing West Nile Fever. Wild bird migration is a mode of WNV introduction into new areas. The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR) is a major stopover of wild birds migrating between Europe and Africa. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of WNV in the DDBR during the 2016 transmission season in wild birds and mosquitoes. Blood from 68 wild birds (nine different species) trapped at four different locations was analyzed by competitive ELISA and Virus Neutralization Test (VNT), revealing positive results in 8/68 (11.8%) of the wild birds by ELISA of which six samples (three from juvenile birds) were confirmed seropositive by VNT. Mosquitoes (n = 6523, 5 genera) were trapped with CDC Mini Light traps at two locations and in one location resting mosquitoes were caught. The presence of WNV RNA was tested in 134 pools by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). None of the pools was positive for WNV-specific RNA. Based on the obtained results, WNV was circulating in the DDBR during 2016.

En el grupo que no uso chupete, los varones representaron un 48% las ninas 52%; 62,3% tenian sobrepeso y 16,6% presento obesidad. En el grupo que si uso chupete, los varones representaron el 53,8% las ninas un 46.2% y el 30,7% tenia sobrepeso y solo 5,3% presento obesidad. Los grupos fueron comparables en sexo y edad. No se encontraron diferencias por sexo en el uso del chupete. El porcentaje de ninos eutroficos, fue significativamente mayor en el grupo que uso chupete en relacion a los ninos que no usaron chupete. El porcentaje de ninos con sobrepeso u obesidad fue significativamente mayor en el grupo de ninos que no usaron chupete en relacion a los ninos que usaron chupete. Tanto el analisis bivariado como el logistico multivariado, considerando el uso del chupete como variable dependiente, el estado nutricional, sexo y edad, son consistentes en que solo la variable estado nutricional se asocio al uso del chupete.

Abstract

In this paper a standardised language code for rail freight operations is developed that aims to facilitate communication between dispatchers, train drivers and traffic managers when running freight trains abroad. In developing the language code the existing situation in the bi-lingual Belgian railways has been taken as a starting point. Communication codes from public services like police, fire brigade, ambulance and military services have been studied. It is believed that, if implemented, the code will improve significantly integrated rail freight services in Europe.

We present a dichotomous key to identify adults of all presently described Odonata of New Caledonia including the Loyalty Islands (Melanesia) and Wallis and Futuna (Western Polynesia). The key covers a total of 58 species of which approximately 50 % are regionally endemic, while others are more widespread species inhabiting neighboring archipelagos such as Vanuatu and Fiji, and even more distant regions.

The potential effect of the use pacifier of use during the first 5 years of life on the weight of the child between 5 and 18 years of age was assessed. The nutritional status of 400 children between 5 and 18 years of age in a private pediatric practice was investigated by questioning the mother on pacifier use between one and 5 years of age. In the group that did not use pacifier, males accounted for 48%, girls for 52%, and 62.3% were overweight and 16.6% obese. In the group using a pacifier, males accounted for 53.8%, girls 46.2% and 30.7% were overweight and only 5,3% were obese. The groups were comparable in age and sex and there were no gender differences in the use of pacifiers. The percentage of eutrophic children was significantly higher in the group who used a pacifier in relation to the one who did not. The prevalence of overweight or obesity was significantly higher in the group of children who did not use a pacifier in relation to children who used a pacifier. Both bivariate and multivariate logistic analysis, considering the use of a pacifier as a dependent variable and nutritional status, sex and age, are consistent in that only the variable nutritional status was associated with pacifier use.

Abstract

Objective: To assess whether frameless stereotaxy can further increase safety and efficacy of transsphenoidal microsurgery.Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 29 patients with pituitary adenomas (10 recurrent, 12 micro, 17 macro), who had undergone image guided endonasal transsphenoidal surgery during an 18-month period in the Department of Neurosurgery, Medical University - Sofia, Bulgaria. In the preoperative planning process, the adenoma volume and both carotid arteries were segmented in a MRI/CT-3 D dataset (T1-weighted, 3 D FLASH after Gadolinium). An optical infrared-based neuronavigation system (Vector Vision, BrainLAB®, Heimstetten, Germany) was used in all cases for frameless guidance. Using Z-touch infrared markerless or landmark registration (in 3 cases) a mean calculated accuracy of 1.47±0.4 mm was achieved; intraoperative accuracy was checked every 10 min.
