Magnetic components play a critical role in power electronics systems and their evolution towards higher power density and efficiency. Nevertheless, accurately modelling magnetic core losses is not a trivial task, requiring extensive measurements. In the context of the general advances of Machine Learning technologies in power electronics applications, this paper presents a Deep Neural Network (DNN) approach to core loss estimations. Various internal parameters of the DNN are tested and compared, to identify the optimal DNN structure for the core loss estimation, including the number of hidden layers, number of neurons, data transformation, and different activation functions. The training data-set comprises the MagNet database for N87 toroid magnetic cores, based on an experimental data acquisition system capable of automatically measuring various magnetic cores under arbitrary excitation signals. The results of the DNN models indicate that a DNN with suitable parameters can robustly and accurately model the core losses. The attainable accuracy is well within the required range for magnetic core losses. The optimal structure proposed in this paper consists of 10 hidden layers with sigmoid activation functions, 10 neurons in each layer, integrating a log-transformation and data normalization. The model is validated with extensive experimental tests similar to the MagNet measurement system. Furthermore, tests at higher switching frequencies up to 1MHz indicate that the model can predict losses for parameters outside the range of its training data. With the purpose of designing the electric powertrain of a high performance electric vehicle capable of running a quarter mile in 10 seconds, firstly it is necessary to calculate the required energy, torque, and power in order to size and select the suitable storage components and electric motors. Secondly, an assessment of the powertrain arrangement is needed to choose the best internal configuration of the vehicle and guarantee the highest efficiency possible. Finally, a design of the power conversion stages, specifically the DC-DC converter that interfaces the storage unit with the electric motors, is required as well. This paper shows the energy calculation procedure based on a longitudinal dynamic model of the vehicle and the selection method of the storage components and motors needed for this application, as well as the design of two 100 kW interleaved boost converters with coupled inductors. In addition, a novel operation of the interleaved boost converter is proposed in order to increase the efficiency of the converter. As a result, the designed converter achieved a power density of 24,2 kW/kg with an efficiency of 98 %, which was validated by experimental tests of a low power prototype. Para diseñar el tren de potencia de un vehículo eléctrico de alto desempeño capaz de correr un cuarto de milla en 10 segundos, primero es necesario calcular la potencia y energia necesarias para dimensionar y seleccionar los componentes de almacenamiento y los motores adecuados. Segundo, se requiere una evaluación de varios trenes de potencia para seleccionar la mejor configuración interna del vehículo con el propósito de garantizar la mayor eficiencia posible. Finalmente, se necesita un diseño del convertidor de potencia DC-DC que haga la interfaz entre la unidad de almacenamiento y los motores eléctricos con sus respectivos inversores. Este artículo presenta el procedimiento para el cálculo de la energia necesaria para correr el vehículo con base en un modelo dinámico longitudinal. Así mismo, se presenta el método de selección de los componentes de almacenamiento de energía necesarios. Finalmente, se presenta el diseño de dos convertidores intercalados con inductores acoplados de 100 kW operando bajo una novedosa operación propuesta para incrementar la eficiencia del convertidor. Como resultado, el convertidor diseñado logró una densidad de potencia de 24,2 kW/kg y una eficiencia de 98 %, la cual es validada con pruebas experimentales de un prototipo de baja potencia.

Battery State of Charge estimation is critical to improve performance, lifetime, and safety of batteries used in agricultural robotic systems. This paper analyzes two different Equivalent Circuit Models that can be used for State of Charge estimation of batteries. We analyze the RC model proposed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the 2RC Thevenin model. The main objective of this study is to determine the advantages and limits of equivalent circuit models for online State of Charge tracking. We performed, for each model, an estimation of the parameters offline. Also, the Recursive Least Square technique was implemented for one of the models to analyze the effect of the online estimation in battery modeling. Then, we implemented and analyzed two Kalman Filters for State of Charge estimation: Linear Kalman Filter and Unscented Kalman Filter. Finally, we provide simulation results of models implemented using MATLAB that we evaluated using experimental data from tests performed on a Panasonic 18650PF Li-ion Battery. De Montilivi-campus van de universiteit van Girona is uitgerust met een 20 jaar oude fotovoltaïsche installatie bestaande uit 96 zonnepanelen (BP4160). Gebleken is dat de installatie met een laag rendement werkt en dat zij een zeer beperkte hoeveelheid energie opwekt (17373 kWh/jaar) terwijl de Montilivi-campus in totaal 4565493 kWh/jaar verbruikt. Deze masterproef richt zich op het modelleren van de meest economische en efficiënte zonnepaneelinstallaties voor de twaalf gebouwen op de campus. Met behulp van de PVGIS-software werden extra gegevens verzameld over het geleverde vermogen van de panelen gedurende een jaar in Girona. Met deze gegevens konden verschillende simulaties uitgevoerd worden om een PV-installatie voor elk gebouw op de campus te optimaliseren met behulp van de Sunny Design software. Uit deze simulaties volgde een betrouwbaar model voor elk gebouw, dat zich fundeert op betrouwbare bronnen, datasheets, prijzen van leveranciers en berekeningen. De berekeningen tonen aan dat de nieuwe panelen het efficiëntst zijn als ze naar het zuiden gericht worden met een hellingshoek van 36°. Daarnaast blijkt uit de data van PVGIS dat voor iedere configuratie geopteerd kan worden voor omvormers met een lager vermogen (±13%) dan het geïnstalleerd vermogen. Uit de simulaties volgt dat de installaties met het SPR-MAX3-400 paneel het milieuvriendelijkst zijn terwijl installaties met het JKM390M-6RL3-B paneel op lange en het VERTEX PERC paneel op korte termijn het meest economisch zijn.

Due to the rapid electrification of vehicles, EnergyVille is researching 350kW modular, Ultra-fast chargers consisting of multiple DAB converters. Thanks to these kinds of converters, the charger is able to output multiple voltage and current levels independently of each other. This allows the charger to adapt to the vehicles’ specifications to ensure optimal fast charging. To reduce the size of the converter, a high switching frequency is used, which causes large switching losses. These switching losses prove difficult to estimate in high power components due to their parasitic elements. Nowadays, these losses are always verified experimentally via a prototype. The goal of this masters’ thesis is to establish different models to estimate the switching losses based on datasheet parameters of the components. These models are set up in Python and are validated through an experimental setup. Specifically, different operating points of the converter are set and the switching losses are determined via the measured values. Since the models differ in complexity, it is interesting to see which model is the most accurate. Additionally, a model is created to estimate the other converter losses throughout this operating range. The experimental verification shows that the most complex model, model 3, is the most accurate compared to the experimental results. Therefore, it is used to determine the switching losses throughout the entire operating range.

Distributienetbeheerders (DNB's) worden geconfronteerd met een toename van grid events als gevolg van de implementatie van distributed energy resources (DER's). Het spanningsniveau op het aansluitingspunt kan variëren en wordt niet geëvalueerd door DNB's. Daarom werkt Brno University of Technology samen met DNB E.ON Distribuce om operatoren op te leiden om juiste beslissingen te nemen in geval van grid events. In het huidige net zijn een groot aantal inverter-gebaseerde DER’s aangesloten. Inverters zijn voornamelijk ontworpen om stroom te leveren zonder evaluatie van het net. Deze masterproef richt zich op het ontwikkelen van een model van inverter-gebaseerde DER’s en is bedoeld om operatoren te helpen om grid events te simuleren en de impact van DER's op het net te bestuderen met betrekking tot verschillende niveaus van geïntegreerde supportfuncties. Om beter te begrijpen waarom problemen zich voordoen, richt de literatuurstudie zich op het vergelijken van bestaande netondersteuning en hun gebreken. Er wordt een model ontwikkeld in MATLAB/Simulink conform met de Europese regelgeving. De netdynamiek kan worden geëvalueerd door het simuleren van spannings- en frequentieproblemen. Functies kunnen worden uitgeschakeld of aangepast aan de situatie. Samen met specifieke instellingen voor DNB’s biedt dit model flexibiliteit en inzicht in de mogelijkheden van DER's om spannings- en frequentieproblemen op te lossen. Analyses tonen aan dat het model overeenkomt met het verwachte gedrag en kan worden gebruikt voor verdere ontwikkeling.

Door de stijgende vraag naar DC-toepassingen met grote vermogens is er binnen het onderzoekscentrum EnergyVille te Genk een grote focus naar zeer efficiënte en lichte DC/DC-omzetters. Het ontwerpen van DC-componenten wordt steeds moeilijker door het gebrek aan ruimte in bepaalde toepassingen en het dalend aanbod aan koper en ijzer. Deze thesis heeft een algoritme ontworpen dat duizenden transformatorontwerpen berekent voor bepaalde condities. Dit algoritme kan worden gebruikt als hulpmiddel om de meest geschikte transformator voor een bepaalde toepassing te ontwerpen. Het algoritme is gemaakt in Matlab en wordt gevalideerd in de simulatietool Elmer. Concreet berekent en vergelijkt het algoritme transformatorontwerpen van verschillende afmetingen en materialen zodat het optimale ontwerp kan worden gekozen. Dit gebeurt via twee benaderingen. De ene bepaalt het rendement op basis van een maximale temperatuur, de andere gaat uit van externe koeling, waardoor er mindere temperatuur beperkingen zijn en meer ontwerpen kunnen worden geëvalueerd. De resultaten tonen voor elk materiaal de relatie tussen de vermogensdichtheid, het rendement en de afmetingen. Daarnaast kan het ook ontwerpen voor elk soort magnetisch materiaal evalueren, waardoor het geschikt is voor een breed scala aan toepassingen. Het dient als een basis voor iedereen die een transformator wil ontwerpen, terwijl er geen uitgebreide kennis over transformatoren nodig is. Tot slot blijkt de tool een snelle en betrouwbare manier te zijn om transformatoren te ontwerpen.
