Abstract Nonrelativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) breaks down in the region of low transverse momentum, where the transverse momentum of the produced quarkonium state is sensitive to multiple scattering with the incoming hadron and to soft gluon radiation. In this kinematic regime, the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization framework is required, promoting the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) of NRQCD to the so-called TMD shape functions (TMDShFs), which encode both the soft gluon radiation and the formation of the heavy-quark bound state. In this work, we apply an effective-field theory approach (combining NRQCD and SCET) to the photon-gluon fusion process in inclusive J/ψ leptoproduction. We derive a factorization theorem for the cross section in terms of TMDShFs, compute these quantities at next-to-leading order, establish their evolution, and study their matching onto the corresponding LDMEs in the high-transverse-momentum region. Our results are particularly relevant to the Electron-Ion Collider, where J/ψ leptoproduction can be used to probe gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (gluon TMDPDFs).

Abstract We compute the gluon transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at next-to-leading order (NLO) into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet S 1 8 3 $$ {}^3{S}_1^{\left[8\right]} $$ channel, based on the NRQCD factorization approach. The spurious rapidity divergences are explicitly shown to cancel in a well-defined TMDFF, which incorporates the needed soft factor. We also compute the integrated gluon FF at NLO in the same S 1 8 3 $$ {}^3{S}_1^{\left[8\right]} $$ channel, and show that the matching coefficient of the TMDFF onto the FF at large transverse momentum is the expected one. These results are relevant to perform precise and sensible phenomenological studies of transverse-momentum spectra of quarkonium production, for which the production mechanism through fragmentation plays a relevant role, like in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

3. GTMDs and the factorization of exclusive double Drell-Yan

Different exclusive processes have been proposed to access the generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions (GTMDs) with no proof of factorization, which allows to rigorously define the GTMDs. Using Soft Collinear Effective Theory we derive for the first time the factorization of the differential cross section for the exclusive double Drell-Yan process πN→N′γ⁎γ⁎→N′(ℓ+ℓ−)(ℓ+ℓ−), for small transverse momenta of the photons in terms of a perturbatively calculable hard factor, GTMDs and light-cone wave functions (LCWFs). We find that the hard factor of the process can be obtained from single inclusive Drell-Yan production so that one can resum logarithms at high orders in QCD. We also discuss the evolution of the GTMDs and the LCWFs.

Abstract We discuss the measurement of gluon transverse momentum distribution (TMD) in dijet and heavy hadron pair (HHP) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The factorization of these processes in position space shows the appearance of a specific new soft factor matrix element on top of angular and complex valued anomalous dimensions. We show in detail how these features can be treated consistently and we discuss a scale prescription for the evolution kernel of the dijet soft function. As a result we obtain phenomenological predictions for unpolarized and angular modulated cross-sections for the electron-ion collider (EIC) using current available information on unpolarized TMD.

5. Global analysis of the Sivers functions at NLO+NNLL in QCD

Abstract

Abstract We perform global fit to the quark Sivers function within the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism in QCD. We simultaneously fit Sivers asymmetry data from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) at COMPASS, HERMES, and JLab, from Drell-Yan lepton pair production at COMPASS, and from W/Z boson at RHIC. This extraction is performed at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We find excellent agreement between our extracted asymmetry and the experimental data for SIDIS and Drell-Yan lepton pair production, while tension arises when trying to describe the spin asymmetries of W/Z bosons at RHIC. We carefully assess the situation, and we study in details the impact of the RHIC data and their implications through different ways of performing the fit. In addition, we find that the quality of the description of W/Z vector boson asymmetry data could be strongly sensitive to the DGLAP evolution of Qiu-Sterman function, besides the usual TMD evolution. We present discussion on this and the implications for measurements of the transverse-spin asymmetries at the future Electron Ion Collider.

Abstract We study a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework for the processes of dijet and heavy-meson pair production in deep-inelastic-scattering in an electron-proton collider, considering the measurement of the transverse momentum imbalance of the two hard probes in the Breit frame. For the factorization theorem we employ soft-collinear and boosted-heavy-quark effective field theories. The factorized cross-section for both processes is sensitive to gluon unpolarized and linearly polarized TMD distributions and requires the introduction of a new soft function. We calculate the new soft function here at one-loop, regulating rapidity divergences with the δ-regulator. In addition, using a factorization consistency relation and a universality argument regarding the heavy-quark jet function, we obtain the anomalous dimension of the new soft function at two and three loops.

Abstract We study the transverse-momentum spectrum of quarkonium production from single light-parton fragmentation mechanism. In the case of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, we observe that there are two possible initiating processes, namely photon-gluon fusion and light-quark fragmentation. For the second case we derive the factorization theorem, which involves a new hadronic quantity: the quarkonium transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions in NRQCD. We calculate their matching onto the non-perturbative long distance matrix elements at the lowest order in the strong-coupling constant, O α s 2 $$ \mathcal{O}\left({\alpha}_s^2\right) $$ . Focusing on the case of the electron-ion collider, we make a comparative phenomenological study of the two production mechanisms and find the regions of the phase space where one is dominant over the other.

Abstract $$J/\psi $$ J/ψ - or $$\Upsilon $$ Υ -pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5–10% range). Such asymmetries should be measurable in the available data sets of $$J/\psi $$ J/ψ pairs and in the future data sets of the high-luminosity LHC for $$\Upsilon $$ Υ pairs.

Abstract Quarkonia production in different high-energy processes has recently been proposed in order to probe gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions (TMDs in general). However, no proper factorization theorems have been derived for the discussed processes, but rather just ansatzs, whose main assumption is the factorization of the two soft mechanisms present in the process: soft-gluon radiation and the formation of the bound state. In this paper it is pointed out that, at low transverse momentum, these mechanisms are entangled and thus encoded in a new kind of non-perturbative hadronic quantities beyond the TMDs: the TMD shape functions. This is illustrated by deriving the factorization theorem for the process pp → η c, b at low transverse momentum.

10. QCD×QED evolution of TMDs

Abstract

We consider for the first time the QED corrections to the evolution of (un)polarized quark and gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions (TMDs in general). By extending their operator definition to QCD×QED, we provide the mixed new anomalous dimensions up to O(αsα) and the pure QED ones up to O(α2). These new corrections are universal for all TMDs up to the flavor of the considered parton, i.e., the full flavor universality of TMD evolution found in pure QCD is broken in QCD×QED by the presence of the electric charge. In addition, we provide the leading-order QED corrections to the matching coefficients of the unpolarized quark TMD parton distribution function onto its integrated counterparts at O(αs0α).

11. Matching factorization theorems with an inverse-error weighting

Abstract

We propose a new fast method to match factorization theorems applicable in different kinematical regions, such as the transverse-momentum-dependent and the collinear factorization theorems in Quantum Chromodynamics. At variance with well-known approaches relying on their simple addition and subsequent subtraction of double-counted contributions, ours simply builds on their weighting using the theory uncertainties deduced from the factorization theorems themselves. This allows us to estimate the unknown complete matched cross section from an inverse-error-weighted average. The method is simple and provides an evaluation of the theoretical uncertainty of the matched cross section associated with the uncertainties from the power corrections to the factorization theorems (additional uncertainties, such as the nonperturbative ones, should be added for a proper comparison with experimental data). Its usage is illustrated with several basic examples, such as Z boson, W boson, H0 boson and Drell–Yan lepton-pair production in hadronic collisions, and compared to the state-of-the-art Collins–Soper–Sterman subtraction scheme. It is also not limited to the transverse-momentum spectrum, and can straightforwardly be extended to match any (un)polarized cross section differential in other variables, including multi-differential measurements.

13. Azimuthal asymmetries in unpolarized SIDIS and Drell-Yan processes: A case study towards TMD factorization at subleading twist

Abstract

We consider the azimuthal distribution of the final observed hadron in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and the lepton pair in the Drell-Yan process. In particular, we focus on the cos⁡ϕ modulation of the unpolarized cross section and on its dependence upon transverse momentum. At low transverse momentum, for these observables we propose a factorized expression based on tree-level approach and conjecture that the same formula is valid in transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization when written in terms of subtracted TMD parton distributions. Our formula correctly matches with the collinear factorization results at high transverse momentum, solves a long-standing problem and is a necessary step towards the extension of the TMD factorization theorems up to the subleading twist.

14. Proper definition and evolution of generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions

Abstract

We consider one of the most fundamental sets of hadronic matrix elements, namely the generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions (GTMDs), and argue that their existing definitions lack proper evolution properties. By exploiting the similarity of GTMDs with the much better understood transverse momentum distributions, we argue that the existing definitions of GTMDs have to include an additional dependence on soft gluon radiation in order to render them properly defined. With this, we manage to obtain the evolution kernel of all (un)polarized quark and gluon GTMDs, which turns out to be spin independent. As a byproduct, all large logarithms can be resummed up to next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy with the currently known perturbative ingredients.

In this short note the QED extension of the nucleon spin sum rule is considered. To this end, the leading-order (LO) QED evolution kernels for the quark/gluon helicity and orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) distributions are calculated, as well as their lepton and photon analogue distributions introduced for the first time. The LO evolution kernels of the latter are also calculated, both in QCD and QED. Putting all together, the nucleon spin sum rule remains scale-invariant in QCD$\times$QED, as expected, which represents a check of the newly obtained results. This theoretical development will allow in the future the quantification of the contributions of lepton and photon distributions to the nucleon spin, and a more precise control over the uncertainties., Comment: v1: 6 pages

Abstract

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings., Comment: Latex, 115 pages, 55 figures, 4 tables. v2: Review published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract

Extraction of the multi-TeV proton and lead LHC beams with a bent crystal or by using an internal gas target allows one to perform the most energetic fixed-target experiment ever. pp, pd and pA collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 115 GeV and Pbp and PbA collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 72 GeV can be studied with high precision and modern detection techniques over a broad rapidity range. Using the LHCb or the ALICE detector in a fixed-target mode offers unprecedented possibilities to access heavy-flavour production in a new energy domain, half way between the SPS and the nominal RHIC energy. Abstract

We perform global fit to the quark Sivers function within the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism in QCD. We simultaneously fit Sivers asymmetry data from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) at COMPASS, HERMES, and JLab, from Drell-Yan lepton pair production at COMPASS, and from $W/Z$ boson at RHIC. This extraction is performed at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We find excellent agreement between our extracted asymmetry and the experimental data for SIDIS and Drell-Yan lepton pair production, while tension arises when trying to describe the spin asymmetries of $W/Z$ bosons at RHIC. We carefully assess the situation, and we study in details the impact of the RHIC data and their implications through different ways of performing the fit. In addition, we find that the quality of the description of $W/Z$ vector boson asymmetry data could be strongly sensitive to the DGLAP evolution of Qiu-Sterman function, besides the usual TMD evolution. We present discussion on this and the implications for measurements of the transverse-spin asymmetries at the future Electron Ion Collider., 48 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector (SPD) is a future multipurpose experiment foreseen to run at the NICA collider, which is currently under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna, Russia). The physics program of the experiment is based on collisions of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at $\sqrt{s}$ up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to 10$^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The SPD will operate as a universal facility for comprehensive study of unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon, using different complementary probes such as: charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. The aim of this work is to make a thorough review of the physics objectives that can potentially be addressed at the SPD, underlining related theoretical aspects and discussing relevant experimental results when available. Abstract

The physics of high-energy colliders relies on the knowledge of different non-perturbative parton correlators, such as parton distribution functions, that encode the information on universal hadron structure and are thus the main building blocks of any factorization theorem of the underlying process in such collision. These functions are given in terms of gauge-invariant light-front operators, they are non-local in both space and real time, and are thus intractable by standard lattice techniques due to the well-known sign problem. In this paper, we propose a quantum algorithm to perform a quantum simulation of these type of correlators, and illustrate it by considering a space-time Wilson loop. Abstract

$J/\psi$- or $\Upsilon$-pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5%-10% range). Such asymmetries should be measurable in the available data sets of $J/\psi$ pairs and in the future data sets of the high-luminosity LHC for $\Upsilon$ pairs., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We consider the azimuthal distribution of the final observed hadron in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and the lepton pair in the Drell-Yan process. In particular, we focus on the cos⁡ϕ modulation of the unpolarized cross section and on its dependence upon transverse momentum. At low transverse momentum, for these observables we propose a factorized expression based on tree-level approach and conjecture that the same formula is valid in transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization when written in terms of subtracted TMD parton distributions. Our formula correctly matches with the collinear factorization results at high transverse momentum, solves a long-standing problem and is a necessary step towards the extension of the TMD factorization theorems up to the subleading twist.

Abstract

We consider for the first time the QED corrections to the evolution of (un)polarized quark and gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions (TMDs in general). By extending their operator definition to QCD×QED, we provide the mixed new anomalous dimensions up to O(αsα) and the pure QED ones up to O(α2). These new corrections are universal for all TMDs up to the flavor of the considered parton, i.e., the full flavor universality of TMD evolution found in pure QCD is broken in QCD×QED by the presence of the electric charge. In addition, we provide the leading-order QED corrections to the matching coefficients of the unpolarized quark TMD parton distribution function onto its integrated counterparts at O(αs0α).

Using the LHCb and ALICE detectors in the fixed-target mode at the LHC offers unprecedented possibilities to study the quark, gluon and heavy-quark content of the proton and nuclei in the poorly known region of the high-momentum fractions. Abstract

We review the context, the motivations and the expected performances of a comprehensive and ambitious fixed-target program using the multi-TeV proton and ion LHC beams. We also provide a detailed account of the different possible technical implementations ranging from an internal wire target to a full dedicated beam line extracted with a bent crystal. Thanks to its multi-TeV LHC proton and lead beams, the LHC complex allows one to perform the most energetic fixed-target experiments ever and to study with high precision pp, pd and pA collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 115 GeV and Pbp and PbA collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 72 GeV. Abstract

We discuss how quarkonium production, in particular $\eta_c$ production in proton-proton collisions, can be used to access gluon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs). To do so, we apply the effective field theory machinery to factorize the process in terms of gluon TMDPDFs at low transverse momentum, and match this result with the collinear framework to obtain the full transverse-momentum spectrum. This matching is performed by applying the newly devised inverse-error weighting method, based on an estimation of the uncertainties coming from power corrections to construct a weighted average of both factorization theorems.

Abstract

We propose a new fast method to match factorization theorems applicable in different kinematical regions, such as the transverse-momentum-dependent and the collinear factorization theorems in Quantum Chromodynamics. At variance with well-known approaches relying on their simple addition and subsequent subtraction of double-counted contributions, ours simply builds on their weighting using the theory uncertainties deduced from the factorization theorems themselves. This allows us to estimate the unknown complete matched cross section from an inverse-error-weighted average. The method is simple and provides an evaluation of the theoretical uncertainty of the matched cross section associated with the uncertainties from the power corrections to the factorization theorems (additional uncertainties, such as the nonperturbative ones, should be added for a proper comparison with experimental data). Its usage is illustrated with several basic examples, such as $Z$ boson, $W$ boson, $H^0$ boson and Drell-Yan lepton-pair production in hadronic collisions, and compared to the state-of-the-art Collins-Soper-Sterman subtraction scheme. It is also not limited to the transverse-momentum spectrum, and can straightforwardly be extended to match any (un)polarized cross section differential in other variables, including multi-differential measurements., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. v2: accepted for publication in PLB

Abstract

AFTER@LHC is an ambitious fixed-target project in order to address open questions in the domain of proton and neutron spins, Quark Gluon Plasma and high-$x$ physics, at the highest energy ever reached in the fixed-target mode. Indeed, thanks to the highly energetic 7 TeV proton and 2.76 A.TeV lead LHC beams, center-of-mass energies as large as $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 115 GeV in pp/pA and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 72 GeV in AA can be reached, corresponding to an uncharted energy domain between SPS and RHIC. We report two main ways of performing fixed-target collisions at the LHC, both allowing for the usage of one of the existing LHC experiments. Abstract

In this work we consider how a parton distribution function, with an explicit transverse momentum dependence can be properly defined in a regularization-scheme independent manner. We argue that by considering a factorized form of the transverse momentum dependent spectrum for the production of a heavy lepton pair in Drell-Yan reaction, one should first split the relevant soft function into two boost invariant contributions. When those soft contributions are added to the pure collinear contributions, well-defined hadronic matrix elements emerge, i.e., the transverse momentum dependent distributions. We also perform a comparison with Collins' definition., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We consider the definition of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions while staying on-the-light-cone. By imposing a requirement of identical treatment of two collinear sectors, our approach, compatible with a generic factorization theorem with the soft function included, is valid for all non-ultra-violet regulators (as it should), an issue which causes much confusion in the whole field. We explain how large logarithms can be resummed in a way which can be considered as an alternative to the use of Collins-Soper evolution equation. Abstract

We review a number of ideas put forward in favour of the use of a polarised target along with the proposed idea of a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams -- AFTER@LHC. A number of recent studies have shown that single transverse-spin asymmetries (STSAs) are large enough to be precisely measured in the region accessible with AFTER@LHC, in particular as regards the Drell-Yan process as well as single-pion, isolated-photon and jet production. AFTER@LHC with a polarised target would also be the ideal experimental set-up to measure the gluon Sivers effect via a number of original quarkonium STSA studies. We discuss first figures-of-merit based on simulations for AFTER@LHC with a polarised target.

Abstract

All (un)polarized transverse momentum dependent functions (TMDs), both distribution and fragmentation functions, are defined with the same universal soft function, which cancels spurious rapidity divergences within an individual TMD and renders them well-defined hadronic quantities. Moreover, it is independent of the kinematics, whether it is Drell-Yan, deep inelastic scattering or $e^+e^-\rightarrow 2$ hadrons. In this paper we provide this soft function at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), necessary for the calculation of all TMDs at the same order, and to perform the resummation of large logarithms at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. From the results we obtain the $D$ function at NNLO, which governs the evolution of all TMDs. This work represents the first independent and direct calculation of this quantity. Given the all order relation through a Casimir scaling between the soft function relevant for gluon TMDs and the one for quark TMDs, we also obtain the first at NNLO. Abstract

We calculate the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent fragmentation function at next-to-next-to-leading order, evaluating separately the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) soft factor and the TMD collinear correlator. For the first time, the cancellation of spurious rapidity divergences in a properly defined individual TMD beyond the first nontrivial order is shown. This represents a strong check of the given TMD definition. We extract the matching coefficient necessary to perform the transverse momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. The universal character of the soft function, which enters the definition of all (un)polarized TMD distribution/fragmentation functions, facilitates the future calculation of all the other TMDs and their coefficients at next-to-next-to-leading order, pushing forward the accuracy of theoretical predictions for the current and next generation of high energy colliders.

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We study the leading-power gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) of relevance to the study of asymmetries in the scattering off transversely polarized hadrons. Next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations of these TMDs show that at large transverse momentum they have common dynamical origins, but that in the limit of small longitudinal momentum fraction $x$ only one origin remains. We find that in this limit only the dipole-type gluon TMDs survive and become identical to each other. At small $x$ they are all given by the expectation value of a single Wilson loop inside the transversely polarized hadron, the so-called spin-dependent odderon. This universal origin of transverse spin asymmetries at small $x$ is of importance to current and future experimental studies, paving the way to a better understanding of the role of gluons in the three-dimensional structure of spin-polarized protons., 5 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

We provide the proper definition of all the leading-twist (un)polarized gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs), by considering the Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution in hadron-hadron collisions and deriving the factorization theorem in terms of them. We show that the evolution of all the (un)polarized gluon TMDPDFs is driven by a universal evolution kernel, which can be resummed up to next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. Considering the proper definition of gluon TMDPDFs, we perform an explicit next-to-leading-order calculation of the unpolarized ($f_1^g$), linearly polarized ($h_1^{\perp g}$) and helicity ($g_{1L}^g$) gluon TMDPDFs, and show that, as expected, they are free from rapidity divergences. As a byproduct, we obtain the Wilson coefficients of the refactorization of these TMDPDFs at large transverse momentum. In particular, the coefficient of $g_{1L}^g$, which has never been calculated before, constitutes a new and necessary ingredient for a reliable phenomenological extraction of this quantity, for instance at RHIC or the future AFTER@LHC or Electron-Ion Collider. The coefficients of $f_1^g$ and $h_1^{\perp g}$ have never been calculated in the present formalism, although they could be obtained by carefully collecting and recasting previous results in the new TMD formalism. We apply these results to analyze the contribution of linearly polarized gluons at different scales, relevant, for instance, for the inclusive production of the Higgs boson and the $C$-even pseudoscalar bottomonium state $\eta_{b}$. Abstract

By applying the effective field theory machinery we factorize the transverse momentum spectrum of Higgs boson production, where the main hadronic quantities are the gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs). We properly define those quantities, showing explicitly, in the case of an unpolarized hadron, that they are free from rapidity divergences, and extract their evolution properties. It turns out that the evolution for all eight (un-)polarized leading-twist gluon TMDPDFs is driven by the same evolution kernel, for which we derive the necessary ingredients to obtain a resummation of large logarithms at next-tonext-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. We make predictions for the contribution of linearly polarized gluons to the Higgs boson qT -spectrum.

Abstract

The recent formulation of the factorization theorem for transverse momentum spectra in terms of well-defined transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs), allows for a better understanding of the role of the perturbative and non-perturbative QCD contributions and their interplay. In particular, non-perturbative effects are often included both in the evolution of the TMDs and in the modeling of their scale-independent part. Using the available Drell-Yan and $Z$-production data at low and high energy we show that, for the currently available dilepton invariant mass values, the TMD evolution is driven mainly by its perturbative contribution, while the needed non-perturbative correction is scale independent. Abstract

We calculate the transverse momentum dependence in the production of two back-to-back hadrons in electron-positron annihilations at the medium/large energy scales of BES-III and BELLE experiments. We use the parameters of the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions that were recently extracted from the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering multiplicities at low energy from HERMES. TMD evolution is applied according to different approaches and using different parameters for the nonperturbative part of the evolution kernel, thus exploring the sensitivity of our results to these different choices and to the flavor dependence of parton fragmentation functions. Here we discuss the fit of Drell-Yan and $Z$-production data using the transverse momentum dependent formalism and the resummation of the evolution kernel. We find a good theoretical stability of the results and a final $\chi^2/{\rm points}\lesssim 1$. Abstract

The factorization theorems for transverse momentum distributions of dilepton/boson production, recently formulated by Collins and Echevarria-Idilbi-Scimemi in terms of well-defined transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs), allows for a systematic and quantitative analysis of non-perturbative QCD effects of the cross sections involving these quantities. In this paper we perform a global fit using all current available data for Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production at hadron colliders within this framework. The perturbative calculable pieces of our estimates are included using a complete resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. Performing the matching of transverse momentum distributions onto the standard collinear parton distribution functions and recalling that the corresponding matching coefficient can be partially exponentiated, we find that this exponentiated part is spin-independent and resummable. We argue that the inclusion of higher order perturbative pieces is necessary when data from lower energy scales are analyzed. We consider non-perturbative corrections both to the intrinsic nucleon structure and to the evolution kernel and find that the non-perturbative part of the TMDs could be parametrized in terms of a minimal set of parameters (namely 2-3). Abstract

We study the QCD evolution of the Sivers effect in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan production (DY). We pay close attention to the non-perturbative spin-independent Sudakov factor in the evolution formalism and find a universal form which can describe reasonably well the experimental data on the transverse momentum distributions in SIDIS, DY lepton pair and $W/Z$ production. With this Sudakov factor at hand, we perform a global fitting of all the experimental data on the Sivers asymmetry in SIDIS from HERMES, COMPASS and Jefferson Lab. We then make predictions for the Sivers asymmetry in DY lepton pair and $W$ production that can be compared to the future experimental measurements to test the sign change of the Sivers functions between SIDIS and DY processes and constrain the sea quark Sivers functions., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, published version in PRD

Abstract

By considering semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and the (complementary) qT-spectrum for Drell-Yan lepton pair production we derive the QCD evolution for all the leading-twist transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions. We argue that all of those functions evolve with Q2 following a single evolution kernel. This kernel is independent of the underlying kinematics and it is also spin independent. Those features hold, in impact parameter space, to all values of bT. The evolution kernel presented has all of its large logarithms resummed up to next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy, which is the highest possible accuracy given the existing perturbative calculations. As a study case we apply this kernel to investigate the evolution of the Collins function, one of the ingredients that have recently attracted much attention within the phenomenological studies of spin asymmetries. Our analysis can be readily implemented to revisit previously obtained fits that involve data at different scales for other spin-dependent functions. Such improved fits are important to get better predictions - with the correct evolution kernel - for certain upcoming experiments aiming to measure the Sivers function, Collins function, transversity, and other spin-dependent functions as well. © 2014 American Physical Society.
