This lesson uses the picture book "Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt" by Deborah Hopkinson and an interactive website to enhance third- through fifth-grade students' understanding of the Underground Railroad and slavery, development of reading comprehension skills, and application of mapping skills. During three 45-60 minute lessons, students will: identify the various uses for quilts and describe the significance of Clara's quilt; enhance their understanding of the Underground Railroad; create a problems/solutions/events chart for "Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt"; and apply mapping skills to make a "quilt map" showing their route from home to school. The instructional plan, lists of resources, student assessment/reflection activities, and a list of National Council of Teachers of English/International Reading Association (NCTE/IRA) Standards addressed in the lesson are included. Examines why early development of motor skills is important, and presents easily implemented activities for 3- to 5-year-old children. Provides practical ideas for using large-muscle activities in both indoor and outdoor settings. Specific activities focus on use of balloons, blankets, and balls to achieve development. (SD)

The use of picturebooks to engage children in developing mathematical proficiency is well documented. However, there is limited evidence as to their use with children in the upper primary years. Therefore, we developed a novel initiative in which we would source picturebooks that contained mathematical topics appropriate to this age cohort and trial them in the classroom. In this paper, we present the findings from the seven teachers who took part. The thematic analysis is aligned with the three core principles of Universal Design for Learning. Results demonstrate that use of picturebooks offer learners multiple means of accessing and engaging with mathematical concepts, multiple means of building conceptual representations of mathematics, and lend themselves to multiple means of action and expression in extending, internalising and showcasing learning.

Most workers adjust well to retirement, but some experience depression due to poor adjustment. No evidence-based treatments were identified that targeted the developmental needs of this complex transition. In phase 1, a treatment manual (IPT-RM) was developed. The manual comprised an adaptation of Interpersonal Psychotherapy. In phase 2, a pilot study was conducted to determine the treatment’s feasibility. A series of non-experimental AB singlecase studies was conducted with nine retirees. All research participants’ depressive symptoms receded into the non-depressed range by the end of the study. The IPT-RM treatment manual was developed to a Stage 1 level, which incorporated peer-reviewed literature and clinical knowledge. Practical implications of the research for future activities include (a) prevention: conduct psychosocial retirement preparation workshops and other delivery formats, such as internet, DVD, and print media and (b) intervention: train psychologists in issues related to retirement adjustment. Future research could trial IPT-RM at a Stage 2 level of evidence-based treatment manual development. Furthermore, a retirement adjustment scale could be developed to predict which retirees are at greatest risk of experiencing depression due to a poor adjustment to retirement.

This chapter will focus upon the relationship that exists between the nurse and the patient and their family. It is recognised that such a relationship should be therapeutic, and indeed this seems essential to the delivery of effective nursing care. However, it is unwise to assume a therapeutic relationship will automatically occur, as there are many challenges in establishing and maintaining such a relationship in community settings. In this chapter the key features of a therapeutic relationship will be identified, and some of the challenges of maintaining that relationship in a community setting will be discussed. This will lead the reader to consider some of the issues or particular relevance to his/her patient group, and to explore some of the consequences of failing to establish and maintain relationships. In conclusion, the current and potential changes in healthcare delivery will be reviewed with particular reference to the way these changes might impact on the nurse/patient/family relationship.

This article describes an action research project which compares two forms of intervention with families with children who were seen to have 'medium range' behavioural difficulties. The implications of this research for the delivery of parenting training programmes, and for services to families in general, are discussed. The research took place in an industrial urban area in the North of England. A programme of parenting training was compared with a social skills and self-esteem programme for the young people within the target families. Both interventions were effective; however, the parenting intervention was more effective. Areas of particular improvement were parents' perceptions of more considerate and helpful behaviour in their children, and lower levels of hyperactivity, a reduction in levels of parental depression, and an increase in children's sense of self-esteem and self-confidence.
