The interpenetrating connection of icosahedra network (ICOIN) was termed as structural skeleton, which could quantify the strength and ductility of MGs. The impact of different rejuvenation methods on medium-range order (MRO) alterations was rarely studied. This work employed molecular dynamics simulations to examine the difference in MRO evolution of metallic glasses treated by recovery annealing and thermal-pressure treatment during uniaxial tension. All of the specimens obtain enhanced ductility due to improved potential energy. During tension, ICOI of all rejuvenated specimens exhibits an increased destruction rate and a decreased transformation rate. However, there are some converse characteristics in the specimens under different rejuvenation methods. The rejuvenated specimens treated by recovery annealing exhibit increased free volume and decreased ICOIN density. After thermal-pressure treatment, the rejuvenated specimens demonstrated decreased free volume and enhanced ICOIN density. During tension, the enhancement of icosahedral free volume in specimens treated by thermal pressure largely decreased the ICOIN density, thereby increasing the ductility. After tension, the rejuvenated specimens under high pressure have a significant reduction in ICOIN density compared to those under recovery annealing. The significance of this work is to accurately regulate the ICOIN density of rejuvenated specimens.

4. Carbon capture and sequestration with in-situ CO2 and steam integrated 3D concrete printing

Profound reliance of the building and construction sector on cement exacerbates its immense carbon footprint, accounting for a substantial portion of worldwide emissions. In this paper, we investigate the possibilities of in-situ carbon capture and sequestration to eliminate spatial constraints from a chamber confined curing solution via CO2 and steam integrated 3D concrete printing. The presented technology involves a two-step extrusion-based system that sequesters captured CO2 directly into concrete prior deposition at the nozzle printhead, so as to achieve artificially accelerated carbonation reactions with enhancement of mechanical properties. Accordingly, samples subjected to in-situ CO2 and steam integration showed increases of up to 50.0 % 3D printability, 36.8 % compressive strength, and 45.3 % flexural strength compared to control at its respective curing conditions. The results of said approach demonstrated 38.2 % increase in bulk carbon uptake compared to accelerated carbonation confined curing methods, offering an alternative pathway towards decarbonized construction with 3DCP.

The phytochemical investigation of the methanol extract of the seeds of Magydaris pastinacea afforded two undescribed benzofuran glycosides, furomagydarins A-B (1, 2), together with three known coumarins. The structures of the new isolates were elucidated after extensive 1D and 2D NMR experiments as well as HR MS. Compound 1 was able to inhibit the COX-2 expression in RAW264.7 macrophages exposed to lipopolysaccharide, a pro-inflammatory stimulus. RT-qPCR and luciferase reporter assays suggested that compound 1 reduces COX-2 expression at the transcriptional level. Further studies highlighted the capability of compound 1 to suppress the LPS-induced p38MAPK, JNK, and C/EBPβ phosphorylation, leading to COX-2 down-regulation in RAW264.7 macrophages.

Among reinforcement methods for 3D concrete printing (3DCP) structures, steel cable reinforcement and reinforced concrete confined by 3DCP formwork (RC-3DPF) methods offer high design freedom and automation. However, the former lacks reinforcement in directions perpendicular to the printing direction, and the latter cannot satisfy constructional requirements. This paper proposed a hybrid approach: the steel rebar reinforced concrete column confined by the steel cable reinforced 3DCP permanent formwork (RC-SC-3DPF). Axial compression tests and theoretical analysis were conducted to study axial performances. Test results showed steel cables and fibres added to 3DCP formwork benefit RC-SC-3DPF structural performances. With a steel cable confinement ratio above 0.534%, RC-SC-3DPF outperforms the traditional case. Steel fibre, compared to PVA fibre, demonstrates greater potential for RC-SC-3DPF due to improved axial load resistance and reduced ductility loss. A theoretical model, based on experimental results, existing standards, and M&T model, was developed to effectively evaluate RC-SC-3DPF structural behaviour.

This study explores the innovative use of 3D robotic spray for applying self-sensing cementitious coating, emphasising its potential for multifunctional smart concrete applications. The effects of spray parameters on the performance of self-sensing cementitious composites were investigated by systematically examining the impact of nozzle travel speed, air injection pressure, nozzle standoff distance, and spray direction on the self-sensing coating. In-depth analyses were conducted on mechanical strength, coating adhesion properties, and sensing performance. Micro-CT was performed to investigate the coating's inherent porosity. This study evaluated the sensing performance of the coatings by analysing their piezoresistive behaviour under cyclic compression and bending. Furthermore, it demonstrated the coating's capacity for real-time structural health monitoring by evaluating its performance under compressive and bending stresses until failure. This research underscores the significant impact of spray parameters on optimising the sensing capabilities of the self-sensing spray coating, highlighting its potential for advanced real-time structural health monitoring.

Achieving net carbon neutrality is a global goal toward mitigating climate change presumed consequences. The building and construction sector, responsible for approximately 40 % of greenhouse gas emissions, requires innovative zero-carbon technologies. This paper investigates the synergistic potential of combining 3D concrete printing (3DCP) and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) to advance net carbon neutrality in construction. By implementing different CO2 spraying regimes, this study demonstrates improved carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and the crystallinity of precipitated calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The findings indicate that the method's effectiveness heavily relies on appropriate printing parameters and curing conditions. Chamber-cured samples exhibit the highest CO2 uptake but the lowest mechanical strength, while ambient-cured samples show the opposite trend. It is also important to note that the duration of CO2 exposure in this study was relatively short, resulting in limitations in both CO2 uptake and strength gain. Nevertheless, this study highlights the potential of synergistically combining 3DCP and CCS technologies for net carbon neutrality, emphasizing the critical role of the construction sector in achieving global emission reduction targets.

9. 3D Cementitious composites printing with pretreated recycled crumb rubber: mechanical and acoustic insulation properties

Cementitious materials incorporating recycled crumb rubber have become a common sustainable resolution in diverse building environments to achieve various functions in terms of lightweight, ductility, as well as energy absorption. This study explored the 3D printed rubberised cementitious composites (3DPRC) in two aspects: examining the effects of crumb rubber pretreatment conditions on compressive properties; conducting experimental and numerical analysis on the acoustic dissipation characteristics of 3DPRC. Fine crumb rubber granules (3-5 mm) replaced 10%, 20%, and 30% of river sand in the composites. Uniaxial compression tests indicated that the compressive strength of 3DPRC decreased with the increase of crumb rubber content and introduced anisotropic behaviour. Impedance tube tests were conducted to evaluate the sound absorption and insulation capabilities of 3DPRC. An optimal Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.35 was achieved with 30% crumb rubber. The sound insulation properties depend strongly on the mass density and porosity of the 3DPRC. Additionally, it is proved that the volume of built-in air gap has positive effects on both sound absorption and insulation properties. The results from Finite Element Method (FEM) numerical simulations correlated well with experimental data, proving the efficiency of the simulation and validating the experimental results.

Countries around the globe have recently been actively developing a new type of solar power system known as the floating photovoltaic (FPV) system. The FPV system is advantageous in terms of efficiency and is economic, however, the environmental conditions on the surface of water are harsher than on the ground, and regulations or standards of the long-term durability of the float are insufficient. As a result, this study aims to investigate the durability of the float through three types of accelerated aging tests, including the damp heat test, the ozone-aging test, and the ultraviolet (UV) aging test. After the 7-day damp heat test (80 °C/95% RH), the results revealed that four groups of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) extrusion specimens neither produced more oxygen-containing functional groups, according to Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum analysis, nor became more easily broken by the tensile test. Furthermore, more oxygen-containing functional groups were produced after the 7-day ozone-aging test (80 °C/95% RH/500 ppm) than the 17-day UV-aging test (60 °C/0% RH/60 kW·h·m−2). On the contrary, UV aging would make HDPE specimens harder and more brittle than ozone aging. To conclude, both ozone- and UV-aging tests can evaluate the durability of the float quickly and efficiently.

Recently, countries from around the globe have been actively developing a new solar power system, namely, the floating photovoltaic (FPV) system. FPV is advantageous in terms of efficiency and cost effectiveness, however, environmental conditions on the surface of water are harsher than on the ground, and the regulations and standards for the long-term durability of supporting devices are insufficient. As a result, this study aims to investigate the durability of supporting devices through a novel type of accelerated corrosion test, copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS). After an eight-day CASS test, the results demonstrated that only a small area of white protective layer on the SUPERDYMA shape steel was fully corroded and rusted. Moreover, five types of screw, fastened solidly on the SUPERDYMA shape steel, namely a galvanized steel screw capped with a type 316 stainless steel (SS) nut, a type 304 SS screw, a type 410 SS screw, a chromate-passivated galvanized steel screw, and a XP zinc–tin alloy coated steel screw, achieved varying degrees of rust. In general, the corrosion degree of the eight-day CASS test was more serious than that of the 136-day neutral salt spray (NSS) test. Therefore, the CASS test is faster and more efficient for the evaluation of the durability of supporting devices.

21. Controlling the polarization dependence of dual-channel directional couplers formed by silicon-on-insulator slot waveguides

The polarization dependence of directional couplers (DC) formed by silicon-on-insulator (SOI) slot waveguides was studied, and its applications as highly efficient polarization beam splitters (PBSs) and polarization-independent directional couplers (PIDCs) were investigated. The coupling lengths for the quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes may vary with the waveguide geometry due to structural birefringence; thus numerical simulations of the coupling effects in the directional couplers with different aspect ratios and waveguide spacing were conducted to obtain the optimal design parameters for high efficiency as well as compact device size. The lengths of the coupling regions of the designed PBS and PIDC are 47.61 and 23.13 [micro]m, respectively, and they delivered good performance, with an extinction ratio greater than 20 and 1 dB bandwidth larger than 100 nm. 22. Plasmon field enhancement in silver core-protruded silicon shell nanocylinder illuminated with light at 633 nm

We show, to the best of our knowledge, the first simulation result of the strong plasmonic field coupling and enhancement at the Ag/Si interface of a silver core/protruded silicon shell nanocylinder by using the finite-element method. The strong plasmon field, with a slow effective phase velocity accumulated at the Ag/Si interface, which results from the large effective index of the surface plasmon due to the nearly identical real parts with opposite signs of the permittivities of silver and silicon at 633 nm, is analyzed. When the silicon shell has shallow protrusions of proper periodicity to meet the phase matching condition between the incident light and the surface plasmon wave at the Ag/Si interface, a higher scattered electric field and a higher sensitivity to the refractive index change of the surrounding medium can be achieved. Furthermore, a feasible implementation of the core-shell nanocylinder design concept is studied and discussed. OCIS codes: 240.6680, 250.5403.

A hexagonal nanostructure formed by seven core shell nanocylinders filled with different dielectric cores is investigated. The surface plasmon resonance in such a hexagonal nanostructure under conditions of different illumination wavelengths, dielectric cores, angles of incidence, and thicknesses of silver shells is studied by use of the finite element method. Simulation results show that the resonant wavelength is redshifted as the dielectric constant and the size of the core increase. The peak resonant wavelength and the local field enhancement are approximately proportional to the radius of the dielectric core. Additionally, the surface plasmon field excited by TM-polarized light at the incident angle of [theta] = 15[degrees] is exactly a linear combination of those excited at incident angles of [theta] = 0[degrees] and 30[degrees], confirming the linear nature of the surface plasmon resonance in a nanostructure formed by linear media. Abstract When a transformable B2 precipitate is embedded in an amorphous matrix, it is often experimentally observed that the crystalline-amorphous interface not only serves as an initiation site for the martensitic transformation due to local stress concentrations, but also as an inhibitor to stabilize the transformation, the latter being attributed to the “confinement effect” exerted by the amorphous matrix, according to the Eshelby solution. These two seemingly incongruous factors are examined in this study using molecular dynamics simulations from an atomic interaction perspective. An innate strain gradient in the vicinity of the crystalline-amorphous interface is identified. The actual interface, the compressive/dilatative transition, and the interfacial maximum strain are investigated to differentiate from the conventional “interface” located within a distance of a few nanometers. Our innate interfacial elastic strain field model is applicable for the design of materials with a higher degree of martensitic transformation and controllable stress concentration, even in cryogenic environments.

The advantage of 3DCP technologies is the ability to fabricate free-form structures. However, printing openings in concrete structures are limited by the presence of overhanging sections. While various 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies have established methods for handling overhangs with temporary supports, many existing techniques for 3D concrete printing still rely on wooden planks and corbelling, which restrict the design flexibility and slope angles. The objective of this study is to develop a removable and sustainable support material with high printability performance. This support material serves as temporary support for overhang sections in 3D-printed structures and can be removed once the primary concrete has hardened sufficiently. This study observed that increasing the recycled glass content in the mixture raises both the dynamic and static yield stresses, with only mixtures containing up to 60% recycled glass remaining pumpable. Optimization of the mixture design aimed to balance high flowability and buildability, and the results indicated that a mixture with 60% recycled glass content is optimal. The effectiveness of the optimized support material was validated through the successful printing of a structure featuring a free-form opening and overhang section.

A study was done to analyze joint ventures of multinational corporations when they serve a host market. Models were constructed to evaluate the effects of profit sharing, cost reductions, risk reductions and competition reductions on the profits from such ventures. The models show that multinational corporations from joint ventures when there is strong competition and operational risks are present. The level of significant costs determine the choice between mutinational corporations and subsidiaries. Finally, multiple licensing is done when there are many local companies.

Background Disparities in prostate cancer (PCa) outcomes and their links to socioeconomic status (SES) have been intensively studied. A relatively low incidence rate and a high proportion of late-stage diagnosis have been documented in studies of Asian populations. For the past 20 years, the trend in the growth of PCa cases in Taiwan was opposite to that of Western countries. However, there is a striking paucity of local studies on these important issues. To mitigate this gap in knowledge, we exploited two population databases to investigate the impact of SES on PCa incidence rate and stage at diagnosis. Particularly, we sought to explore the discriminating capabilities of various indexes of SES on two diagnostic outcome indicators. Method We conducted a population-based, follow-up, observational study. Data of study populations and newly diagnosed PCa cases between 2011 and 2013 were collected from the National Health Insurance Research Database and the Taiwan Cancer Registry. We retrieved 50–79 old male subjects who were classified as government employee, enterprise employee, or labor class. People with a diagnosis of any type of cancer before January 1, 2011, were excluded. The influences of four independent variables, i.e., age, beneficiary’s insurance status, occupation and income, were analyzed. We used Cox proportional hazard models to calculate the hazard ratios of PCa and used logistic regression models to analyze the odds ratios (ORs) of late-stage PCa diagnosis. Results The low crude PCa incidence rate (112 per 100,000 person-years) and the high percentage of late-stage presentation (44%) were similar to those found in previous studies of old Asian men. Unsurprisingly, age was consistently revealed to be the most determinant factor in PCa diagnosis, while the insurance status of the beneficiaries showed no significant difference. Significant socioeconomic disparities in PCa diagnosis were demonstrated by occupation and income indexes, individually or in combination. However, occupation and income showed varied capabilities in discriminating disparities between different outcome indicators. Conclusion Our study supported the findings of extant works showing that advantaged populations have a higher PCa incidence rate and a lower percentage of late-stage diagnosis. The discriminating capabilities of health disparity by occupation and/or income were contingent on the choice of health outcome indicators. The relatively high percentage of late-stage presentation is a critical public health challenge, and a tailored coping strategy is urgently needed. For more effective health policy-making, local socioeconomic effects on the other outcome indicators of PCa, such as incidence to mortality ratio, warrant further investigation.

ABSTRACTAs global CO2 concentrations rise, there is a pressing need for sustainable alternatives in the construction sector as many countries are striving to attain net carbon neutrality. Integrating carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies directly into 3D concrete printing offer a promising solution to reduce the carbon footprint in the construction sector. This paper investigates a novel printing technique involving the purging of pressurised CO2 gas was demonstrated and the various process parameters were evaluated for its effectiveness in promoting carbon sequestration. Results show that the carbon-sequestrated sample has a 15% increase in carbon uptake as compared to the control sample. The method can be complementary to existing sequestration technologies, facilitating large-scale carbon sequestration without chamber size limitations. Nevertheless, further research and development are necessary to optimise the various printing parameters and achieve a more balanced and efficient integration of carbon capture and sequestration technologies with 3DCP.

Abstract Background Aging degrades the balance and locomotion ability due to frailty and pathological conditions. This demands balance rehabilitation and assistive technologies that help the affected population to regain mobility, independence, and improve their quality of life. While many overground gait rehabilitation and assistive robots exist in the market, none are designed to be used at home or in community settings. Methods A device named Mobile Robotic Balance Assistant (MRBA) is developed to address this problem. MRBA is a hybrid of a gait assistive robot and a powered wheelchair. When the user is walking around performing activities of daily living, the robot follows the person and provides support at the pelvic area in case of loss of balance. It can also be transformed into a wheelchair if the user wants to sit down or commute. To achieve instability detection, sensory data from the robot are compared with a predefined threshold; a fall is identified if the value exceeds the threshold. The experiments involve both healthy young subjects and an individual with spinal cord injury (SCI). Spatial Parametric Mapping is used to assess the effect of the robot on lower limb joint kinematics during walking. The instability detection algorithm is evaluated by calculating the sensitivity and specificity in identifying normal walking and simulated falls. Results When walking with MRBA, the healthy subjects have a lower speed, smaller step length and longer step time. The SCI subject experiences similar changes as well as a decrease in step width that indicates better stability. Both groups of subjects have reduced joint range of motion. By comparing the force sensor measurement with a calibrated threshold, the instability detection algorithm can identify more than 93% of self-induced falls with a false alarm rate of 0%. Conclusions While there is still room for improvement in the robot compliance and the instability identification, the study demonstrates the first step in bringing gait assistive technologies into homes. We hope that the robot can encourage the balance-impaired population to engage in more activities of daily living to improve their quality of life. Future research includes recruiting more subjects with balance difficulty to further refine the device functionalities.

The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing algorithm used by the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) for the European Space Agency's first Remote-Sensing Satellite (E-ERS-1) SAR data are examined. Preprocessing highlights two features: signal measurement, which includes signal-to-noise ratio, replica measurement, and noise measurement; and Doppler measurement, which includes clutter lock and autofocus. The custom pipeline architecture performs the main processing with controls at the input interface, range correlator, corner-turn memory, azimuth correlator, and multi-look memory. The control software employs a flexible control scheme. The Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) format encapsulates the ASF products. System performance for SAR image processing of E-ERS-1 data is reviewed.

We describe a method for determining the parental HLA haplotypes of a single individual without recourse to conventional segregation genetics. Blood samples were cultured to identify and sort chromosome 6 by bivariate flow cytometry. Single chromosome 6 amplification products were confirmed with a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and verified by deep sequencing to enable assignment of both alleles at the HLA loci, defining the two haplotypes. This study exemplifies a rapid and efficient method of haplotyping that can be applied to any chromosome pair, or indeed all chromosome pairs, using a single sorting operation. The method represents a cost-effective approach to complete phasing of SNPs, which will facilitate a deeper understanding of the links between SNPs, gene regulation and protein function.

Nanocavity resonators in metals acting as nanofluidic refractive-index sensors were analyzed theoretically. With the illumination of transverse electric polarized light, the proposed refractive index sensor structure acts as a pure electromagnetic resonator without the excitation of surface plasmons. The reflected signal from the nanocavity resonators can be very sensitive to the refractive index of the fluids inside the nanocavities due to the enhancement of the electric field of the resonant mode inside the cavities. Such a sensor configuration can be a useful tool for probing the refractive index change of the fluid inside the nanocavities using the spectral, angular or intensity interrogation schemes. The wavelength sensitivity of 430 nm/RIU, angular sensitivity of 200-1,000 deg/RIU and intensity sensitivity of 25.5 RIU(-1) can be achieved in the proposed sensor configuration.

We propose a high birefringence and low loss index-guiding photonic crystal fiber (PCF) using the complex unit cells in cladding by the finite-element method. Results show that the birefringence and confinement loss in such PCF fiber is determined not only by the whole cladding asymmetry but also the shape of the PCF core. The maximal modal birefringence and lowest confinement loss of our proposed structures at the excitation wavelength of λ = 1550 nm can be achieved at 8.7 × 10−3 and 5.27 × 10−5 dB/km, respectively.

The varying physical property in a functionally graded material can be tailored to its specific requirements while using material resources effectively. 3D concrete printing can produce robust and lightweight functionally graded material for the construction industry. In this study, an approach was developed to create an objective tailored functionally graded concrete material by examining the filament material property correlations with the printing parameters. It was found that the physical property of the printed material is closely correlated to the flow rate and travel speed of the printer. Results obtained from the experiment show that the optimised structure achieved an approximately 50% improvement in the strength-to-weight ratio. This preliminary examination of the 2D optimised concrete structure opens the realm of possibility for future work in 3D optimised functionally graded concrete.

The aim of this study is to foster an understanding of the clinical characteristics, in terms of general psychopathology, of Tourette syndrome (TS), as it manifests in adolescent patients, and to compare these results with those of previous studies conducted in Western countries. In total, 38 male and 5 female adolescent patients who visited a pediatric neurological specialty clinic for TS between 1 January and 1 March 2003, and who met the World Health Organisation criteria for TS, were studied. These patients were clinically interviewed and assessed with the Symptom-Checklist-90-R, Family APGAR and Tic Symptoms questionnaire, a self-report questionnaire based on DSM-IV TS diagnostic criteria. Among this population, the mean age of onset of motor tics was 9.65 +/- 3.7 years, and motor tics of the head and eyes were usually the first symptoms to manifest; coprolalia occurred in 44.1% (n = 19) of our patients. Many of our findings were similar to those reported in trials conducted in other regions of the world. TS symptoms showed stronger correlation with emotional distress in older patients.

Antrodia cinnamomea Chang & Chou, sp. nov. growing rarely on the inner wall of Cinnamomum kanehirai Hay was identified as a new species of Antrodia , which is an expensive folk medicine and used as an antidote, anticancer and anticnesmatic drug. In this study the influence of different physical and chemical factors on the growth of mycelium by A. cinnamomea CCRC35396 was investigated in submerged cultures of using shake flasks. In addition, response surface methodology (RSM) was also used to optimize medium composition for the enhancement of biomass productivity. The results indicate that when a submerged culture in shake flasks was operated at 25 °C, initial pH 5 and rotation speed 100 rpm, the mycelium concentration reached 486.8 mg/100 ml at 14th day. High rotation speed was unfavorable to the growth of mycelium and the optimum was around 100 rpm. According to the RSM, optimal initial pH and the concentrations of C-source and N-source were determined and the mycelium concentration of A. cinnamomea rose to 2164.2 mg/100 ml at the 7th day and the biomass productivity had a eightfold increase, compared to the growth in basal medium. The results proved that the growth rate of mycelium of A. cinnamomea could be highly enhanced by means of the control of cultural conditions and the modification of medium compositions based on the RSM.

Biliary sludge (or very thick bile) is mainly comprised of calcium bilirubinate granules and lesser amounts of cholesterol crystals, and it can produce a layer of low amplitude of echoes in the most dependent part of the gallbladder (GB). In tumefactive biliary sludge, low-amplitude echoes do not form a fluid--fluid level but instead tend to give the appearance of a polypoid mass that is bounded by a smooth margin, round, and lobulated. Differential diagnoses for an echogenic mass in the GB lumen include GB carcinoma, tumefactive sludge, and gangrenous cholecystitis. In this case report, we describe a rare case in which biliary sludge did not form a fluid--fluid level but tended to accumulate and appear as a polypoid mass within the lumen of the GB. The lesion was finally identified as being tumefactive sludge mimicking neoplasm of the GB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The polarization dependence of directional couplers (DC) formed by silicon-on-insulator (SOI) slot waveguides was studied, and its applications as highly efficient polarization beam splitters (PBSs) and polarization-independent directional couplers (PIDCs) were investigated. The coupling lengths for the quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes may vary with the waveguide geometry due to structural birefringence; thus numerical simulations of the coupling effects in the directional couplers with different aspect ratios and waveguide spacing were conducted to obtain the optimal design parameters for high efficiency as well as compact device size. The lengths of the coupling regions of the designed PBS and PIDC are 47.61 and 23.13 μm, respectively, and they delivered good performance, with an extinction ratio greater than 20 and 1 dB bandwidth larger than 100 nm. The tolerance of fabrication error in the practical device is also discussed.

We show, to the best of our knowledge, the first simulation result of the strong plasmonic field coupling and enhancement at the Ag/Si interface of a silver core/protruded silicon shell nanocylinder by using the finite-element method. The strong plasmon field, with a slow effective phase velocity accumulated at the Ag/Si interface, which results from the large effective index of the surface plasmon due to the nearly identical real parts with opposite signs of the permittivities of silver and silicon at 633 nm, is analyzed. When the silicon shell has shallow protrusions of proper periodicity to meet the phase matching condition between the incident light and the surface plasmon wave at the Ag/Si interface, a higher scattered electric field and a higher sensitivity to the refractive index change of the surrounding medium can be achieved. Furthermore, a feasible implementation of the core-shell nanocylinder design concept is studied and discussed.

A Fabry-Perot interference enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was designed and analyzed numerically. In this paper, a micro-fluidic channel with two parallel interfaces formed on the metal film of an angular-interrogated SPR sensor was employed. The shift of the narrow reflection dips as a function of the refractive index change of the fluid (angular sensitivity S θ ) was very high. Meanwhile, the angular dip width δθ FWHM was very narrow (< 0.01°) and can be adjusted by changing the thickness of the resonant cavity. The corresponding intrinsic sensitivity IS = S θ / δθ FWHM higher than 10 5 RIU -1 around the resonant angle can be achieved.

Matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13), a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family, is considered to play a role in the tumor cell proliferation and invasion. The purpose of this study was to verify the expression of MMP13 in colorectal cancer (CRC) in vitro and in vivo, and subsequently analyze whether the MMP13 expression levels correlate with the clinicopathological features and prognosis of CRC patients. We assessed MMP13 mRNA expression profile in human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines by quantitative RT-PCR, and further verified if it was a secreted protein or not by Western blot analysis of cell culture medium. By immunohistochemical staining the immunoreactivity of MMP13 showed that MMP13 was localized in the cytoplasm of CRC cells. MMP13 mRNA expression of 80 cancerous tissues collected from UICC stage I to III CRC patients were examined by membrane array.
