Abstract

Since the publication of the initial report of the League's Commission on the Future (COTF), there have been many reports written and the California Community Colleges have taken many steps to improve student success and completion. However, there is still much to do. This paper will provide a brief assessment of where we are--in relation to student attainment since the time of the release of our last report (2010), in relation to the goals which we are attempting to reach, and in relation to our ability to meet those goals--before we discuss successful interventions or what needs to be done to meet those goals. Abstract

The Imaging X-ray Polarimeter Explorer (IXPE) focuses on high energy astrophysics in the 2—8 keV x-ray band. IXPE is designed to explore general relativistic and quantum physics effects of gravity, energy, electric and magnetic fields at extreme limits. IXPE, a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) Mission, will add new dimensions to on-orbit x-ray science: polarization degree, polarization angle and extended object polarization imaging. Polarization uniquely probes physical anisotropies that are not otherwise measurable—ordered magnetic fields, aspheric matter distributions, or general relativistic coupling to black-hole spin. Detailed imaging enables the specific properties of extended x-ray sources to be differentiated. The IXPE Observatory consists of spacecraft and payload modules built up in parallel to form the Observatory during system integration and test. The payload includes three polarization-sensitive, x-ray detector arrays paired with three x-ray mirror module assemblies (MMA). A deployable boom provides the correct separation (focal length) between the detector units and MMAs. Currently, the boom has been delivered, all four detectors units (DU) are complete, the detectors service unit (DSU) is complete, instrument system testing has been completed (DSU with 3 DUs), three of four MMAs is built and all spacecraft components except the solar array have been delivered along with the spacecraft and payload structures. Payload and spacecraft integration and test (I&T) started in March 2020. This paper overviews the flight segment (the Observatory, payload, and spacecraft implementation concepts) with emphasis on the build status and summarizes the launch segment. Launch is planned to occur on a Falcon 9 launch vehicle during Summer 2021. The paper summarizes the impacts of switching from the ‘design-to baseline’ of Pegasus XL to the selected launch vehicle for flight, Falcon 9. COVID-19 impacts to the Project are also summarized. The paper will close with a summary of the mission development status. The Project is firmly into the build phase for both the spacecraft and payload and rapidly approaching Observatory I&T.

Abstract

The LSU Neuroscience Center is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, and trans-departmental entity that unites fundamental neurobiology and the clinical neurosciences in the common goal of elucidating the workings of the brain and contributing to the treatment of currently incurable diseases of the nervous system. The objective of this program is to find solutions to neuroscience-related problems of interest to the US Army Medical Research and Development Command. The program is focused on exploiting novel neuroprotective strategies that lead to prevention of and repair after neural injury. Converging approaches using state-of-the-art tools of cell biology, neurochemistry, neuroimmunology, neurophysiology, neuroppharmacology, molecular biology and virology are ongoing. Over the four years covered in this proposal, this program aims to: (1) carry out seven research projects in the basic and clinical neurosciences; (2) expand central, shared facilities with the addition of highly specialized instrumentation not currently available to our scientists; (3) develop laboratory space to permit the physical consolidation and coordination of this research effort; and (4) institute a coordination unit to monitor, facilitate, and administrate the cooperative research programs, as well as to meet the associated budgetary, human resources, facilities, and communications needs for the attainment of the program goals.

14. Responses of trout gill ion transport systems to acute acidosis

Abstract

The response of rainbow trout Na+ and Cl− uptake systems to acute acidosis was tested by slow infusion of lactic acid into anaesthetized animals. Depression of blood pH by 0·4 pH unit had no effect on influx rates for either ion, and we conclude that gill ion uptake systems do not respond rapidly to blood pH changes.

Abstract

Launched on 2021 December 9, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a NASA Small Explorer Mission in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The mission will open a new window of investigation—imaging x-ray polarimetry. The observatory features three identical telescopes, each consisting of a mirror module assembly with a polarization-sensitive imaging x-ray detector at the focus. A coilable boom, deployed on orbit, provides the necessary 4-m focal length. The observatory utilizes a three-axis-stabilized spacecraft, which provides services such as power, attitude determination and control, commanding, and telemetry to the ground. During its 2-year baseline mission, IXPE will conduct precise polarimetry for samples of multiple categories of x-ray sources, with follow-on observations of selected targets.

Abstract

The pretectum is an important center for visual reflexes. However, the location, boundaries, and connections of individual nuclei of the pretectum are incompletely understood. In cat, the traditionally defined nuclear boundaries have been placed in doubt by recent evidence showing that the retinal input to the pretectum forms four continuous projection zones that do not match the cytoarchitectural boundaries of individual pretectal nuclei defined by previous studies. We now show that antibodies to the calcium-binding protein calbindin-D 28K (CaBP) label clusters of neurons within the pretectum that match the zones of retinal termination. Four obvious cell clusters within the pretectum were labeled by CaBP antisera. Computer three-dimensional reconstruction of these cell clusters revealed that they form four distinct but continuous zones that run the rostrocaudal length of the pretectum in a medial-to-lateral direction. By combining anterograde HRP labeling of retinal terminals with CaBP immunocytochemistry, these CaBP-labeled cell clusters were found virtually to overlap the retinal projection zones. The CaBP-labeled neurons included both multipolar and fusiform morphologies, and most were medium- to large-sized cells. HRP retrograde transport studies showed that many CaBP-labeled neurons in the clusters projected to the LGN, while none projected to the inferior olive (IO). GABA-immunoreactive neurons were also found within the CaBP cell clusters, but these neurons were smaller than most CaBP-labeled neurons, and none were retrogradely labeled following HRP injections into the LGN or IO. Two-color antibody double-labeling experiments did not reveal any GABA neurons within the clusters that colocalized CaBP. In summary, calbindin is a precise marker of neuron clusters that overlap the retinal projection zones in the cat pretectum. Many of these CaBP neurons project to the LGN, and none contain GABA.
