Search

Based on new obtained analytical results, the main properties of photon echo quantum memory protocols are analysed and discussed together with recently achieved experimental results. The main attention is paid to studying the influence of spectral dispersion and nonlinear interaction of light pulses with resonant atoms. The distinctive features of the effect of spectral dispersion on the quantum storage of broadband signal pulses in the studied echo protocols are identified and discussed. Using photon echo area theorem, closed analytical solutions for echo protocols of quantum memory are obtained, describing the storage of weak and intense signal pulses, allowing us to find the conditions for the implementation of high efficiency in the echo protocols under strong nonlinear interaction of signal and control pulses with atoms. The key existing practical problems and the ways to solve them in realistic experimental conditions are outlined. We also briefly discuss the potential of using the considered photon echo quantum memory protocols in a quantum repeater.

We propose a quantum memory based on the pre-created long-lived macroscopic quantum coherence. It is shown that the proposed approach provides new physical properties and methods for retrieval of the signal light fields and improvement of the basic parameters of quantum memory. We demonstrate how the pre-created coherence can enable quantum storage with low quantum noise, programmable and on demand retrieval of signal light fields in atomic ensembles with natural inhomogeneous broadening. The feasibility of implementing this proposal in various crystals doped with rare earth ions, as well as in atomic gases with a Raman transition indicates a new way for the development of optical quantum memory.

We develop the integrated efficient multiresonator quantum memory scheme based on a system of three interacting resonators coupled through a common resonator to an external waveguide via switchable coupler. It is shown that high-precision parameter matching based on the step-by-step optimization makes it possible to efficiently store the signal field and on demand retrieval the signal at specified time moments. We derive the area theorem for light pulses interacting with inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of two-level atoms in a single-mode optical waveguide and present its analytical solution for Gaussian-type modes, which demonstrates the significant difference from the formation of $2\pi$ pulses by plane waves. We generalize this theorem to the description of photon echo and apply it to the two-pulse (primary) echo and the revival of silenced echo (ROSE) protocol of photon echo quantum memory. For the first time, we implemented ROSE protocol in a single-mode laser-written waveguide made of an optically thin crystal $Tm^{3+}:Y_3Al_5O_{12}$. The experimental data obtained are satisfactorily explained by the developed theory. Finally, we discuss the obtained experimental results and possible applications of the derived pulse area approach.

Microwave quantum memory promises advanced capabilities for noisy intermediate-scale superconducting quantum computers. Existing approaches to microwave quantum memory lack complete combination of high efficiency, long storage time, noiselessness and multi-qubit capacity. Here we report an efficient microwave broadband multimode quantum memory. The memory stores two spectral modes of single photon level microwave radiation in on-chip system of eight coplanar superconducting resonators. Single mode storage shows a power efficiency of up to $60\pm 3\%$ at single photon energy and more than $73\pm 3\%$ at higher intensity. The demonstrated efficiency is an order of magnitude larger than the previously reported multimode microwave quantum memory. The noiseless character of the storage is confirmed by coherent state quantum process tomography. We seek to design experimentally feasible broadband, temporally multiplexed optical quantum memory with near-term applications to telecom bands. Specifically, we devise dispersion compensation for an impedance-matched narrow-band quantum memory by exploiting Raman processes over two three-level atomic subensembles, one for memory and the other for dispersion compensation. Dispersion compensation provides impedance matching over more than a full cavity linewidth. Combined with one second spin-coherence lifetime the memory could be capable of power efficiency exceeding 90% leading to 106 modes for temporal multiplexing. Our design could lead to significant multiplexing enhancement for quantum repeaters to be used for telecom quantum networks.

The single photon detectors currently used in quantum communication schemes impose considerable restrictions on signal registration and dark count rates, require cooling to low temperatures, and are relatively expensive. Alternative approaches have recently been proposed that are based on the homogeneous and heterogeneous detection of quantum signals and can be used with conventional photodetectors. This work studies the possibility of obtaining a heterogeneous detection scheme in a subcarrier wave (also known as homodyne, self-homodyne or self-heterodyne detection methods for side band frequencies) quantum communication system that could be used to create quantum networks.

We propose a cascade scheme of a superefficient broadband quantum memory consisting of four high-Q ring resonators forming a controllable frequency comb and interacting with long-lived spin systems and with a common waveguide. Using the transfer function giving extended matching conditions, the optimization of all spectroscopic parameters of the system for quantum memory in the resonator is carried out. We propose a scheme of a universal block of broadband quantum memory consisting of three ring microresonators forming a controllable frequency comb and interacting with each other and with a common waveguide. We find the optimal parameters of the microresonators showing the possibility of highly efficient storage of light fields on this memory block and we demonstrate the procedure for gluing several memory blocks for increasing spectral range of the composite quantum memory while maintaining high efficiency.

We show that, under certain circumstances, an optical field in a two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state can propagate through a lossy atomic medium without degradation or evolution. Moreover, the losses give rise to that state when a different state is initially injected into the medium. Such a situation emerges in a {\Lambda}-type atomic system, in which both optical transitions are driven by strong laser fields that are two-photon resonant with the respective signal modes. Then the interactions of the two signal modes with the ground-state atomic coherence interfere destructively, thereby ensuring the preservation of the TMSV with a particular squeezing parameter. This mechanism permits unified interpretation of recent experimental results and predicts new phenomena.

We produced optical waveguides in the 167Er3+ :7LiYF4 crystal with diameters ranging from 30 to 100 mkm by using the depressed-cladding approach with femtosecond laser. These waveguides were studied (both inside and outside) by stationary and coherent spectroscopy on the 809 nm optical transitions between the hyperfine sublevels of 4I15/2 and 4I9/2 multiplets of 167Er3+ ions. It was found that the spectra of 167Er3+ were slightly broadened and shifted inside the waveguides compared to the bulk crystal spectra. We managed to observe a two-pulse photon echo on this transition and determined phase relaxation times for each of waveguides. The experimental results show that the created crystal waveguides doped by rare-earth ions can be used in optical quantum memory and integrated quantum schemes.

The optical scheme is proposed for realization of controlled phase quantum gate based on the off-resonant interaction of photon with three-level atom in single mode QED-cavity. Possible physical implementation of this scheme is discussed.

We investigated the optimal spectral design of periodic structure of narrow lines (AFC-structure) within the inhomogeneously broadened atomic transition which are created for the implementation of broadband AFC photon echo quantum memory.The influence of the spectral design on the suppression of negative dispersion effects in the AFC-echo retrieval was studied for different spectroscopic parameters of atomic media. The maps of the assigned spectral quantum efficiency have been constructed for the created AFC-structures characterized by different spectral design, finesse and optical depth. Based on the performed analysis, we discuss the possible ways for experimental implementation of highly efficient broadband AFC-protocol.

Single-photon detectors based on avalanche photodiodes (SPAD) are key elements of many modern highly sensitive optical systems. One of the bottlenecks of such detectors is a afterpulsing effect which limits a detection rate and requires an optimal hold-off time. In this letter we propose a novel approach for statistical analysis of SPAD dark counts and we demonstrate its usefulness for the search of the experimental condition where the afterpulsing effect can be strongly eliminated. This approach exploits a sequence of ranked time intervals between the dark counts and does not contain a complex mathematical analysis of the experimental data. We show that the approach can be efficiently applied for a small number of the dark counts and it seems to be very beneficial for practical characterization of SPAD devices.

In this paper we experimentally demonstrated a broadband microwave scheme suitable for the multiresonator quan- tum memory-interface. The microwave scheme consists of the system of composed mini-resonators strongly inter- acting with a common broadband resonator coupled with the external microwave waveguide. We have implemented the controllable tuning of the mini-resonator frequencies and coupling of the common resonator with the external waveguide for the implementation of the impedance matched quantum storage. The storage of microwave pulses with an efficiency of 16.3% has been shown experimentally at room temperature. The possible properties of the proposed scheme for mini-resonators with high-Q at low temperatures are discussed. In this work we report about the fundamental correspondence between the high efficiency of the broadband quantum memory on multifrequency absorbers in the single-mode cavity and the topology of the observed frequency lines. We have found the spectral-topological matching condition by using the multiparametric optimization of the absorber characteristics which makes it possible to improve considerably the spectral efficiency of quantum memory under conditions of a real experiment. The elaborated approach opens the possibility for the creation of the broadband quantum interface consisting of a small number of the absorbers and characterized by the super-high quantum efficiency of more than 99.9%., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The dynamics of the interaction between microcavities connected to a common waveguide in a multiresonator quantum memory circuit is investigated. Optimum conditions are identified for the use of quantum memory and a dynamic picture of the exchange of energy between different microcavities is obtained.

In this paper we present universal broadband multi-resonator quantum memory (MR-QM) based on the spatial-frequency combs of the microresonators coupled with a common waveguide. Here we found new Bragg-type impedance matching condition for the coupling of the microresonators with a waveguide field which provides an efficient broadband quantum storage. The obtained analytical solution for the microresonator fields enables sustainable parametric control of all the memory characteristics.

We demonstrate that a photon echo can be implemented by all-optical means using an array of on-chip high-finesse ring cavities whose parameters are chirped in such a way as to support equidistant spectra of cavity modes. When launched into such a system, a classical or quantum optical signal -- even a single-photon field -- becomes distributed between individual cavities, giving rise to prominent coherence echo revivals at well-defined delay times, controlled by the chirp of cavity parameters. We investigate the quantum interference effects of single photon transfer in two-atom cavity system caused by external excitation phase. In the proposed system, two identical atoms (with different positions in the optical cavity) are firstly prepared into a timed state by an external single photon field. During the excitation, the atoms grasp different phases which depend on the spatial positions of the atoms in the cavity. Due to strong resonant interaction between two atoms and optical cavity mode the absorbed input photon can be efficiently transferred from the atoms to the resonant cavity mode. We show that the quantum transfer is highly sensitive to the external excitation phases of atoms and it leads to quantum interference effects on the cavity mode excitation. Besides, the quantum transfer is also influenced by the dipole-dipole interaction dependent to the atomic distance. In this system the atomic positions also determine the coupling constants between atoms and cavity mode which causes additional interference effects to the photon exchange between atoms and cavity. Based on the characteristics of excitation phase we find that it is a feasible scheme to generate long-lived dark state and it could be useful for storage and manipulation of single photon fields by controlling the excitation phase., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 44 references

We have studied the role of thermalization in lifetime reduction of quantum memory based on multi-atomic ensembles. Herein, it is shown to be impossible to remove the thermaization-caused decoherence in such systems using the methods of dynamical decoupling. We have analyzed the existing models of the thermalization and have proposed a new understanding of the thermalization as a result of the internal processes which are not described in the unitary quantum dynamics formalism. The possible ways for reducing the negative influence of thermalization on the quantum memory lifetime are also discussed., Comment: 19 pages

We have obtained an analytical solution for the dispersion relation of the light field modes in the nanowaveguide structure. The solution has been analyzed for the planar waveguide with metamaterial claddings and dielectric core. The analytical solution is valid within the broadband spectral range and is confirmed by existing numerical calculations. We have proposed a scheme of multi-qubit \textit{quantum random access memory} (qRAM) based on the impedance matched photon echo quantum memory incorporated together with the control three-level atom in two coupled QED cavities. A set of matching conditions for basic physical parameters of the qRAM scheme that provides an efficient quantum control of the fast single photon storage and read-out has been found. In particular, it was found that the qRAM operation is determined by the properties of the photonic molecular realized in the qRAM dynamics. Herein, the maximal efficiency of the qRAM is achieved when the cooperativety parameter of the photonic molecular equals to unity that can be easily experimentally implemented. The quantum address of the stored photonic qubits can be put into practice when the address is encoded in photonic multi-time-bin state. We propose a new pulse sequence for dynamical averaging of the dipole-dipole interactions and inhomogeneities of the magnetic fields in the nuclear spin system. We have studied stationary and quasi-stationary signal light pulses in cold lambda-type atomic media driven by counterpropagating control laser fields at the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency. By deriving a dispersion relation we present spectral and temporal properties of the signal light pulse and a significant influence of atomic decoherence on the coupled stationary light pulses for spatial splitting. A new scheme of photon echo based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. We propose an effective realization of the universal set of elementary quantum gates in solid state quantum computer based on macroscopic (or mesoscopic) resonance systems - multi-atomic coherent ensembles, squids or quantum dots in quantum electrodynamic cavity. We exploit an encoding of logical qubits by the pairs of the macroscopic two- or three-level atoms that is working in a Hilbert subspace of all states inherent to these atomic systems. In this subspace, logical single qubit gates are realized by the controlled reversible transfer of single atomic excitation in the pair via the exchange of virtual photons and by the frequency shift of one of the atomic ensembles in a pair. In the case of two-level systems, the logical two - qubit gates are performed by the controlling of Lamb shift magnitude in one atomic ensemble, allowing/blocking the excitation transfer in a pair, respectively, that is controlled by the third atomic system of another pair. When using three-level systems, we describe the NOT-gate in the atomic pair controlled by the transfer of working atomic excitation to the additional third level caused by direct impact of the control pair excitation. We have found a new hidden symmetry of time reversal light-atom interaction in the photon echo quantum memory with Raman atomic transition. The time-reversed quantum memory creates generalized conditions for ideal compression/decompression of time duration of the input light pulses and its wavelength. Based on a general analytical approach to this scheme, we have studied the optimal conditions for the light field compression/decompression in resonant atomic systems characterized by realistic spectral properties. The demonstrated necessary conditions for the effective quantum conversion of the light waveform and wavelength are also discussed for various possible realizations of the quantum memory scheme. We have proposed a magnon qubit based on coupled configuration of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in two ferromagnetic samples placed closely to each other. We have evaluated the magnon BEC qubit realization in the double BEC scheme where we found a quantum synchronism condition providing an effective Hamiltonian of magnon qubit. It has the form of well-known superconducting Josephson qubit. The possibilities for coherent magnon BEC qubit rotation are analyzed. Implementations of the magnon BEC qubit are considered for small samples and thin ferromagnetic films. Advantages of the proposed macroscopic qubit realization are discussed., Comment: 11 pages

Atomic Frequency Comb (AFC) protocol has been particularly successful recently to demonstrate the storage of quantum information in a solid medium (rare-earth doped crystals). The AFC is inspired by the photon-echo technique. We show in this paper that the AFC is actually closely related to the slow-light based storage protocols extensively used in atomic vapours. Experimental verifications are performed in thulium doped YAG (Tm3+:YAG). In this work we propose a new approach to the explanation of the nature of electron based on the corpuscular-wave monism using the further development of the optical-mechanical analogy to describe the physical reality. In this theory the motion of an electron is considered to occur along a trajectory the presence of which is a reflection of the existence of a particle, as well as it is assumed that any motion is defined by a wave V(x,t). It is assumed that there is an explicit relationship between the trajectory and wave equations of the electron, which are established on the basis of the local variational principle. In this approach, an electron wave propagating in free space takes along the electron trajectory. We used this theory to describe the electron motion in a hydrogen-like atom and found its stationary states. The energies of these states coincide with the known quantum mechanics solutions for the stationary energies of the hydrogen-like atom, however, in our approach the spatial trajectories of the electron have the form of the surfaces, which are formed in the region of nodes of the standing electron wave. These surfaces have the form of spheres for the spherical symmetrical electron states and the radii of these spheres coincide with the radii of the Bohr orbits of these states. Thus, in this approach the trajectory and wave measurements of the electron get a consistent spatial description that is inherent to the picture of the corpuscular-wave monism. We discuss the considerable correspondence of the proposed theory with the quantum mechanics results describing the stationary and non-stationary motions of the electron in the atom and their difference. We study quantum compression and decompression of light pulses that carry quantum information using a photon-echo quantum memory technique with controllable inhomogeneous broadening of an isolated atomic absorption line. We investigate media with differently broadened absorption profiles, transverse and longitudinal, finding that the recall efficiency can be as large as unity and that the quantum information encoded into the photonic qubits can remain unperturbed. Our results provide new insight into reversible light-atom interaction, and are interesting in view of future quantum communication networks, where pulse compression and decompression may play an important role to increase the qubit rate, or to map quantum information from photonic carriers with large optical bandwidth into atomic memories with smaller bandwidth., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Low loss magnetic surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes characterized by enhanced electrical field component and subwavelength confinement on the dielectric and negative-index metamaterial interface are presented. We demonstrate a possibility of storage and perfect retrieval of the low loss magnetic SPP fields by using a photon echo quantum memory on Raman atomic transition. First solid state quantum computer was built using transmons (cooper pair boxes). The operation of the computer is limited because of using a number of the rigit cooper boxes working with fixed frequency at temperatures of superconducting material. Here, we propose a novel architecture of quantum computer based on a flexible wire circuit of many coupled quantum nodes containing controlled atomic (molecular) ensembles. We demonstrate wide opportunities of the proposed computer. Firstly, we reveal a perfect storage of external photon qubits to multi-mode quantum memory node and demonstrate a reversible exchange of the qubits between any arbitrary nodes. We found optimal parameters of atoms in the circuit and self quantum modes for quantum processing. The predicted perfect storage has been observed experimentally for microwave radiation on the lithium phthalocyaninate molecule ensemble. Then also, for the first time we show a realization of the efficient basic two-qubit gate with direct coupling of two arbitrary nodes by using appropriate atomic frequency shifts in the circuit nodes. Proposed two-qubit gate runs with a speed drastically accelerated proportionally to the number of atoms in the node. The direct coupling and accelerated two-qubit gate can be realized for large number of the circuit nodes. Finally, we describe two and three-dimensional scalable architectures that pave the road to construction of universal multi-qubit quantum computer operating at room temperatures.

We examine a quantum memory scheme based on controllable dephasing of atomic coherence of a non-resonant, inhomogeneously broadened Raman transition. We show that it generalizes the physical conditions for time-reversible interaction between light and atomic ensembles from weak to strong fields and from linear to non-linear interactions. We develop the theory of an optical quantum memory protocol based on the three pulse photon echo (PE) in an optically dense medium with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB). The wave-function of the retrieved photon echo field is derived explicitly as a function of an arbitrary input Data light field. Dynamic control of a weak quantum probe light pulse for the generation and quantum manipulations of a stationary multi-color (MC-) light field in a resonant coherent atomic medium using electromagnetically induced transparency is proposed. The manipulations have been analyzed based on the analytical solution of the adiabatic limit in the evolution of MC-light fields resulting from interaction of the slow probe light with the new fields generated in the nondegenerate multi-wave mixing scheme. We have found a critical stopping condition for the MC-light fields where the group velocity of light should reduce down to zero. Semiclassical dynamics and behavior of specific quantum correlations of the MC-light fields have been studied in detail for particular initial quantum states of the probe pulse. The stationary MC-field dynamics are treated in terms of dark MC-polariton states constructed for the studied multi-wave mixing processes. We have found the conditions for optimal manipulation of the MC-light while preserving the delicate quantum correlations of the initial probe light pulse. The quantum manipulations leading to the frequency and direction switching of the initial probe light pulse as well as to the quantum swapping of probe light into the new multi-frequency light fields have been proposed. The possibilities of the interaction time lengthening and enhancement of the electric field amplitudes of the stationary MC-light are also discussed for enhancement of the interactions with weak quantum fields in the spatially limited media., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, figure's captions-1 page

A new protocol of the optical quantum memory based on the resonant interactions of the multi atomic system with a cavity light mode is proposed. The quantum memory is realized using a controllable inversion of the inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant atomic transition and impact interaction (on request) of additional short 2 - laser pulse resonant to an adjacent atomic transition. We demonstrate that the quantum memory protocol is effective for arbitrary storage time and can be used for new quantum manipulations with transient entangled states in the field-atoms evolution. A dynamic quantum control of three-color lights in an optically dense medium is presented. We discuss how effectively to stop traveling three-color light pulses in the medium by using three control laser fields at near resonant transitions satisfying electromagnetically induced transparency. We present a quantum manipulation of a traveling light pulse using double atomic coherence for two-color stationary light and quantum frequency conversion. The quantum frequency conversion rate of the traveling light achieved by the two-color stationary light phenomenon is near unity. We theoretically discuss the two-color stationary light for the frequency conversion process in terms of pulse area, energy transfer and propagation directions. We propose the dynamic control of two-color stationary light in a double-lambda four-level system using electromagnetically induced transparency. We demonstrate the complete localization of two-color quantum fields inside a medium using coherence moving gratings resulting from slow-light based atom-field interactions in backward nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. The quantum coherent control of the two-color stationary light opens a door to deterministic quantum information science which needs a quantum nondemolition measurement, where the two-color stationary light scheme would greatly enhance nonlinearity with increased interaction time.

Spatial effects of interference and interaction of light modes in the subwavelength part of the near-field optical microscopy probe have been theoretically studied. It was found that the mode interference can lead to higher spatial compression of light (lambda = 500 nm in free space) within the transverse size of 25 nm inside the probe output aperture of 100 nm in diameter.
