Abstract

Technology Tracking System (TechTracS) computer program developed for use in storing and retrieving information on technology and related patent information developed under auspices of NASA Headquarters and NASA's field centers. Contents of data base include multiple scanned still images and quick-time movies as well as text. TechTracS includes word-processing, report-editing, chart-and-graph-editing, and search-editing subprograms. Extensive keyword searching capabilities enable rapid location of technologies, innovators, and companies. System performs routine functions automatically and serves multiple users.

Abstract

With the increasing emphasis on automation, Automated Guided Vehicles are becoming an important material handing tool in flexible manufacturing systems. The flexibility of AGV's present an interesting problem in the routing and scheduling of vehicles within the system. In this paper, we evaluate a control strategy, which is based on an analysis of the optimal control rules from a Markov Decision Process model. This strategy is compared to Vehicle Looks for Work (VLFW), which is a common control strategy used manufacturing systems today. Systems with asymmetric and symmetric demand arrivals are tested and compared for single and two vehicle systems using Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract

An Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) system is modeled using Markov Decision Processes. Generalized control rules for scheduling AGV's are extracted from the (Markov) optimal control policies. The job throughput (deliveries per time) using the extracted control rules is compared with that of the optimal policy and with those of control rules currently used in industry. Simulation results are provided to verify improvements achieved in other performance measures using the extracted rule for complex AGV systems.
