- Abstract
The MONITOOL project (2017-2023) was carried out to describe the relationships between total dissolved and labile metal concentrations measured in spot water samples and in concurrently deployed Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGTs) passive samplers, respectively. The ultimate aim was to adapt existing marine metal Environmental Quality Standards (EQS ) for DGTs, enabling their use in the context of the European Directives (the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)). Time-integrated metal concentrations provided by DGTs, representing several days, are an advantage compared to conventional spot sampling, especially in highly dynamic systems, such as transitional waters. Hence, the MONITOOL project aimed to provide a robust database of dissolved and labile metal concentrations in transitional and coastal waters, based upon co-deployments of DGTs and collection of spot water samples at several sampling sites (England, France, Ireland, Italy, Northern Ireland, Portugal, Scotland and Spain), followed subsequently by DGT and water metal analysis. Samplings were carried out in 2018 and 2022, following agreed protocols developed in the framework of the project. The MONITOOL dataset includes metal concentrations from DGTs, measured with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS: Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and in concurrently collected spot water samples by ICP-MS (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and Anodic/Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV/CSV: Cd, Pb, Ni). Moreover, data on seawater physical-chemical parameters (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, total suspended solids, dissolved organic carbon, and total organic carbon) is provided. This database presents the results obtained using, concurrently, different forms of sampling and analytical techniques, enabling the comparison of the results obtained by these strategies and allowing the adaptation of EQS in marine water (EQS to DGTs (EQS )

- Abstract
This study investigates the relationships among Ni, Cd and Pb's different chemical forms determined by different methodologies in coastal and transitional waters across a broad geographical scale. Concentrations were measured in spot samples and through passive sampling (DGT). High variability of metal concentrations was found among sampling sites and methodologies due to natural water fluctuations rather than to a given metal or method. Total dissolved metal concentrations in spot samples were lower than the EQS-WFD values. The labile fractions of Cd and Pb, measured in spot samples by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry and by DGT-ICPMS, were highly correlated. Similar labilities were found for Cd, while for Pb, the ASV labile fraction was ≈50% lower. These results reflect the pool of mobile and labile species available towards each technique kinetic window, and they seem not to be affected by discrete sampling flaws.

- Abstract
In order to move forward in the acceptance of a novel contaminant monitoring technique (Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films: DGT) for assessment of marine water bodies, sensu the WFD, an Inter-Laboratories Comparison (ILC) exercise (nine Europeans laboratories) was organized in the framework of the Interreg Atlantic Area MONITOOL project, which focused on the use of the DGT technique for the measurement of WFD priority metals (Cd, Ni and Pb). Reproducible results were obtained for each metal by several laboratories, supporting the assertion that DGT analysis can be performed satisfactorily by laboratories experienced in measuring metals at trace levels in marine environments, even if they have limited practice in DGT analysis. According to the Z-score analysis, among the 9 participating laboratories, 3 had 100 % of satisfactory results for Cd, Ni, and Pb, 3 had >80 % satisfactory results and 2 had about 60 % satisfactory results. This work highlights the need to clearly describe the DGT method in order to control sources of contamination during analytical steps, in particular the resin gel retrieval and the elution steps. Such international intercomparison exercise is an important step to develop the laboratory network involved in DGT analysis and contributes to the improvement of data quality.

Sea cucumbers represent an important part of the diet in Asian and Pacific regions and are also used in traditional medicine. These habits have led to the overexploitation of local sea cucumber populations in these areas, driving the pursuit of new stock regions, such as Mediterranean areas. In Italy, contrarily to that observed for other Mediterranean countries, the exploitation of sea cucumber stocks is not extensive, which opens a new market opportunity. Thus, from a food safety perspective, this work aims at reporting the first assessment of trace metal concentrations (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb) in the edible tissues of Holothuria polii and Holoturia tubulosa collected in Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Metal concentrations found in H. polii were generally higher than in H. tubulosa. However, in both species, they were lower than those reported for other areas of the Western Mediterranean. Cd, Hg, and Pb were below the limits established for seafood in Europe. As concentrations were in the range of those measured in other commercial seafood species in the Mediterranean. Thus, these species may be harvested and traded to fulfil the demands of local and international markets.

Permanent deformation and fatigue are the main problems on Costa Rica's highways, and these are directly related to the asphalt binder. This study seeks to define dosage ranges for polymers and Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) to improve the performance of modified asphalt by improving resistance to fatigue and permanent deformation. The used materials were then characterized. Tests were carried out to determine how the binder would interact with the WCO. Then, the different dosage combinations of both WCO and commercial polymer, SBS or RET in each sample of modified asphalt were selected based on the experimental design. Finally, the sample performance grades (PG) were measured, and their resistance to deformation was evaluated by advanced rheology testing. Waste cooking oil was found to lower the upper and lower limit of the PG. It was also evidenced that the presence of the WCO affects the interaction of the asphalt with the SBS. However, the upper limit of PG increased 2 degrees without affecting the intermediate and low temperatures for the samples modified with RET and oil. Based on the statistical analysis it was determined that the polymer used in each sample (SBS or RET) was the factor that generated the most significant differences in resistance to permanent deformation and fatigue. The elastic recovery was mostly influenced by the polymer dosage. It was also determined that the difference in the amount of WCO used in the samples of the experimental design did not generate significant changes in the measured variables. Finally, the polymer and WCO dosage ranges needed to reach the PGs required in Costa Rica were determined. Generally, the asphalt design guidelines used in the country are established to meet different requirements to those present in Costa Rica. Therefore, this study allows to lay the foundations of a guideline for the asphalt modification process and provides more detail on how to guarantee a good performance of national asphalt.

This qualitative research work analyses the discourses of Bolivian women who migrated to Spain, returned to Bolivia and later started a business. In this sense, based on the interviewees reflections, stories, and experiences, it investigates the causes why Bolivian women migrate to Spain, the labour characteristics during their migratory experience, and finally, the factors that motivate their return and subsequent entrepreneurship in Bolivia. The results show that business and entrepreneurship are forms of resistance of Bolivian women, who have to make their way in a society with significant inequalities.

- Abstract
This document provides guidance on best practice for the use of Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers devices in sampling of transitional and coastal waters for water quality monitoring. The methodology1 to be addressed in this guide was developed by the consortium of the European Union’s Interreg MONITOOL Project in order to ensure comparability and reproducibility of the data obtained from each project Partner in different regions. The guide provides practical and detailed information on all the aspects to be considered before the deployment of these devices and the essential steps for their deployment, retrieval and subsequent sample processing for the analysis of trace metals. Although it is not aimed as a standard protocol, these guidelines address the need for a common approach and the intention to promote best practice.

- Abstract
The current study evaluates the effect of seawater physico-chemical characteristics on the relationship between the concentration of metals measured by Diffusive Gradients in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers (i.e., DGT-labile concentration) and the concentrations measured in discrete water samples. Accordingly, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the total dissolved metal concentrations in the discrete water samples and the labile metal concentrations obtained by DGT samplers; additionally, lead and cadmium conditional labile fractions were determined by Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) and total dissolved nickel was measured by Cathodic Stripping Voltammetry (CSV). It can be concluded that, in general, the median ratios of DGT/ICP and DGT/ASV(CSV) were lower than 1, except for Ni (median ratio close to 1) and Zn (higher than 1). This indicates the importance of speciation and time-integrated concentrations measured using passive sampling techniques, which is in line with the WFD suggestions for improving the chemical assessment of waterbodies. It is the variability in metal content in waters rather than environmental conditions to which the variability of the ratios can be attributed. The ratios were not significantly affected by the temperature, salinity, pH, oxygen, DOC or SPM, giving a great confidence for all the techniques used. Within a regulatory context such as the EU Water Framework Directive this is a great advantage, since the simplicity of not needing to use corrections to minimize the effects of environmental variables could help in implementing DGTs within monitoring networks.

- Abstract
This protocol was developed based on the knowledge acquired in the framework of the Interreg MONITOOL project (EAPA_565/2016) where extensive sampling campaigns were performed in transitional and coastal waters covering eight European countries. It provides detailed procedures and guidelines for the sampling of these waterbodies by concurrent collection of discrete water samples and the deployment of Diffusive Gradient in Thin-films (DGT) passive samplers for the measurement of trace metal concentrations. In order to facilitate the application of this protocol by end-users, it presents steps to follow in the laboratory prior to sampling campaigns, explains the procedures for field campaigns (including in situ measurement of supporting parameters) and subsequent sample processing in the laboratory in preparation for trace metal analyse by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and voltammetry. The protocol provides a systematic, coherent field sampling and sample preparation strategy that was developed in order to ensure comparability and reproducibility of the data obtained from each project Partner in different regions. • Standardization of the concurrent sampling of transitional and coastal waters by DGT passive samplers and spot sampling. • Robust procedures and tips based on existing international standards and comprehensive practical experience. • Links to demonstration videos produced within the MONITOOL project.

- Abstract
Aquatic environments are key niches for the emergence, evolution and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. However, the population diversity and the genetic elements that drive the dynamics of resistant bacteria in different aquatic environments are still largely unknown. The aim of this study was to understand the population genomics and evolutionary events of Escherichia coli resistant to clinically important antibiotics including aminoglycosides, in anthropogenic and natural water ecosystems. Here we show that less different E. coli sequence types (STs) are identified in wastewater than in rivers, albeit more resistant to antibiotics, and with significantly more plasmids/cell (6.36 vs 3.72). However, the genomic diversity within E. coli STs in both aquatic environments is similar. Wastewater environments favor the selection of conserved chromosomal structures associated with diverse flexible plasmids, unraveling promiscuous interplasmidic resistance genes flux. On the contrary, the key driver for river E. coli adaptation is a mutable chromosome along with few plasmid types shared between diverse STs harboring a limited resistance gene content.

Many of them are fleeing extreme poverty or civil wars that have significantly affected their home countries. This phenomenon has turned into one of the biggest problems in the world. In Colombia’s case, migration has become one of the most challenging aspects to face during the past years and in recent years. An investigation has shown evidence that Bogotá D.C, which is the capital of Colombia; it’s the preferred city for Venezuelan people to settle and find opportunities. Currently, there are living 117,886 migrants of Venezuelan Origin in Bogota, which demands urgent attention in essential services such as education, health, employment, housing, etc. The majority of Venezuelans that are in the most vulnerable positions are concentrated in the localities of Santa Fe (4.569 people), Kennedy (4,036); Suba (3,873); Fontibon (2.872) and Engativa (2,871) Social inclusion of the most vulnerable people has presented the opportunity for development and the execution of policies directed towards the construction of civic culture employing humanitarian help highlighting this phenomenon to the people on the capital, providing necessary mechanisms to achieve equal opportunities, and oppose discrimination. The District of Bogota D.C has encouraged the development of programs, projects, and mechanisms to guarantee human rights in attention to this migratory phenomenon that it is becoming more common in the current era and the district’s public agenda.

[Abstract] Introduction: Heel pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions of the lower limb and has a negative impact on the quality of life related to health. It has been estimated that one in ten people experience pain in this region through their lives, mainly affecting people between 40 and 70 years old. The plantar fascia plays an important role in the normal biomechanics of the foot and ankle, serves to support the arch of the foot while stabilizing the joints of the lower limb. Plantar fasciitis is defined as a localized inflammation and degeneration of the proximal plantar fascia. The current literature suggests that it becomes known as fasciosis if the disease becomes chronic and there is evidence of tissue degeneration, although if the inflammation of the anatomical region disappears or continues to exist. Other recurrent pathologies in this anatomical region are the calcaneal spurs and the fat pad of the calcaneus. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a very useful and reliable tool according to researchers to diagnose plantar fasciitis, and is also a noninvasive, well-tolerated image modality without ionizing radiation. In the bibliography consulted we found that the treatment for this pathology is a challenge since there are very few high quality studies comparing different treatment modalities to guide the management based on evidence. Objective: The main objective is to determine the epidemiological profile of talalgias in patients of the Podiatric University Clinic (CUP). Methodology: In this study we will select 226 people: 120 women and 106 men and we will study the existing pathology in the hindfoot of the adult population (18 years or older) of the geographical area of Ferrol. This document provides guidance on best practice for the use of Diffusive Gradient in Thin films (DGT) passive samplers devices in sampling of transitional and coastal waters for water quality monitoring. The methodology1 to be addressed in this guide was developed by the consortium of the European Union's Interreg MONITOOL Project in order to ensure comparability and reproducibility of the data obtained from each project Partner in different regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first case of bovine tuberculosis in a free-living Iberian lynx (Lynx pardina) has been reported. The species is the most endangered feline one in the world. The lynx was from a national park. Mycobacterium bovis isolate correlates by molecular characterization with other isolates from wild ungulates of the park. An epidemiological link is strongly suggested., We report the first case of bovine tuberculosis in a free-living Iberian lynx (Lynx pardina), an extremely endangered feline, from Donana National Park in Spain. The isolate (Mycobacterium bovis) correlates [...]

- Abstract
ABSTRACT: Among the European cities that collaborate with sustainable and innovative tourism models with the aim of promoting their tourism offer, which include online and offline “marketing”, Gerona, Santander, Bergamo (Italy), Charleoi (Belgium), Beauvais (France), Lubeck (Germany) and Cambridge (United Kingdom). The rise of the internet and, therefore, the instantaneous obtaining of information and real-time communication has allowed the appearance of online “marketing”, which carries out its strategies by applying web pages and social networks, and its diffusion is favored by the "mouth to mouth". This tool allows to cover an impersonal point of view, merely informative, by enabling a virtual tour of the city through its website, using images accompanied by descriptions in this case; While you get a more personal point of view through social networks, which can be more decisive when choosing a destination. All cities listed below have at least one official website of the city council that contains useful information for the citizen as well as sections aimed at tourism. The promotion of tourism can be seen in cities such as Santander, Lubeck or Cambridge, which have a website dedicated to tourism where a meticulous description of the city is carried out. In social networks, we can appreciate the attempt of all these cities to join the "Era 2.0", since, although not all have the same presence, none is absent from appearing in any of them.
